Abstract:In the last two decades, fractional (or non integer) differentiation has played a very important role in various fields such as mechanics, electricity, chemistry, biology, economics, control theory and signal and image processing. For example, in the last three fields, some important considerations such as modelling, curve fitting, filtering, pattern recognition, edge detection, identification, stability, controllability, observability and robustness are now linked to long-range dependence phenomena. Similar progress has been made in other fields listed here. The scope of the book is thus to present the state of the art in the study of fractional systems and the application of fractional differentiation. As this volume covers recent applications of fractional calculus, it will be of interest to engineers, scientists, and applied mathematicians.

Abstract:An analytical scheme to determine the statistical behavior of a stochastic system including two terms of fractional derivative with real, arbitrary, fractional orders is proposed. In this approach, Green’s functions obtained are based on a Laplace transform approach and the weighted generalized Mittag–Leffler function. The responses of the system can be subsequently described as a Duhamel integral-type close-form expression. These expressions are applied to obtain the statistical behavior of a dynamical system excited by stationary stochastic processes. The numerical simulation based on the modified Euler method and Monte Carlo approach is developed. Three examples of single-degree-of-freedom system with fractional derivative damping under Gaussian white noise excitation are presented to illustrate application of the proposed method.

Abstract:We introduce a stochastic fractional calculus. As an application, we present a stochastic fractional calculus of variations, which generalizes the fractional calculus of variations to stochastic processes. A stochastic fractional Euler-Lagrange equation is obtained, extending those available in the literature for the classical, fractional, and stochastic calculus of variations. To illustrate our main theoretical result, we discuss two examples: one derived from quantum mechanics, the second validated by an adequate numerical simulation.

Abstract:In this paper we present a rather general phenomenological theory of tick-by-tick dynamics in financial markets. Many well-known aspects, such as the Lévy scaling form, follow as particular cases of the theory. The theory fully takes into account the non-Markovian and non-local character of financial time series. Predictions on the long-time behaviour of the waiting-time probability density are presented. Finally, a general scaling form is given, based on the solution of the fractional diffusion equation.

Abstract:Fractional calculus has become a valuable mathematical tool for modeling various physical phenomena exhibiting anomalous dynamics such as memory and hereditary properties. However, the fractional operators lead to difficulties in analysis, optimization, and estimation that limit the application of fractional models. This paper develops numerical methods to solve fractional optimal control and estimation problems with Caputo derivatives of arbitrary order. First, fractional Pontryagin's maximum principle is used to formulate first-order necessary conditions for fractional optimal control problems. A fractional collocation method using polynomial basis functions is then proposed to discretize the resulting boundary value problems. This allows transforming an infinite-dimensional optimal control problem into a finite nonlinear programming problem. Second, for fractional estimation, a novel ensemble Kalman filter is proposed based on a Monte Carlo approach to propagate the fractional state dynamics. This provides a recursive fractional state estimator analogous to the classical Kalman filter. The capabilities of the proposed collocation and ensemble Kalman filter methods are demonstrated through applications including fractional epidemic control, thermomechanical oscillator control, and state estimation of viscoelastic mechanical systems. The results illustrate improved accuracy over prior discretization schemes along with the ability to handle complex system dynamics. This work provides a comprehensive framework for numerical solution of fractional optimal control and estimation problems. The methods enable applying fractional calculus to address challenges in robotics, biomedicine, mechanics, and other fields where systems exhibit non-classical dynamics.

Abstract:Abstract Fractional derivatives and integrals for measures and distributions are reviewed. The focus is on domains and co-domains for translation invariant fractional operators. Fractional derivatives and integrals interpreted as "Equation missing"-convolution operators with power law kernels are found to have the largest domains of definition. As a result, extending domains from functions to distributions via convolution operators contributes to far reaching unifications of many previously existing definitions of fractional integrals and derivatives. Weyl fractional operators are thereby extended to distributions using the method of adjoints. In addition, discretized fractional calculus and fractional calculus of periodic distributions can both be formulated and understood in terms of "Equation missing"-convolution.

Abstract:We review some applications of fractional calculus developed by the author (partly in collaboration with others) to treat some basic problems in continuum and statistical mechanics. The problems in continuum mechanics concern mathematical modelling of viscoelastic bodies (Sect. 1), and unsteady motion of a particle in a viscous fluid, i.e. the Basset problem (Sect. 2). In the former analysis fractional calculus leads us to introduce intermediate models of viscoelasticity which generalize the classical spring-dashpot models. The latter analysis induces us to introduce a hydrodynamic model suitable to revisit in Sect. 3 the classical theory of the Brownian motion, which is a relevant topic in statistical mechanics. By the tools of fractional calculus we explain the long tails in the velocity correlation and in the displacement variance. In Sect. 4 we consider the fractional diffusion-wave equation, which is obtained from the classical diffusion equation by replacing the first-order time derivative by a fractional derivative of order $0< \beta <2$. Led by our analysis we express the fundamental solutions (the Green functions) in terms of two interrelated auxiliary functions in the similarity variable, which turn out to be of Wright type (see Appendix), and to distinguish slow-diffusion processes ($0 < \beta < 1$) from intermediate processes ($1 < \beta < 2$).

Abstract:Fractional derivatives can be viewed either as handy extensions of classical calculus or, more deeply, as mathematical operators defined by natural phenomena. This follows the view that the diffusion equation is defined as the governing equation of a Brownian motion. In this paper, we emphasize that fractional derivatives come from the governing equations of stable Lévy motion, and that fractional integration is the corresponding inverse operator. Fractional integration, and its multi-dimensional extensions derived in this way, are intimately tied to fractional Brownian (and Lévy) motions and noises. By following these general principles, we discuss the Eulerian and Lagrangian numerical solutions to fractional partial differential equations, and Eulerian methods for stochastic integrals. These numerical approximations illuminate the essential nature of the fractional calculus.

Abstract:Abstract The fractional calculus gains wide applications nowadays in all fields. The implementation of the fractional differential operators on the partial differential equations make it more reality. The space-time-fractional differential equations mathematically model physical, biological, medical, etc., and their solutions explain the real life problems more than the classical partial differential equations. Some new published papers on this field made many treatments and approximations to the fractional differential operators making them loose their physical and mathematical meanings. In this paper, I answer the question: why do we need the fractional operators?. I give brief notes on some important fractional differential operators and their Grünwald-Letnikov schemes. I implement the Caputo time fractional operator and the Riesz-Feller operator on some physical and stochastic problems. I give some numerical results to some physical models to show the efficiency of the Grünwald-Letnikov scheme and its shifted formulae. Although researchers have already reported many excellent results in several seminal monographs and review articles, there are still a large number of non-local phenomena unexplored and waiting to be discovered. Therefore, year by year, we can discover new aspects of the fractional modeling and applications. This review article aims to present some short summaries written by distinguished researchers in the field of fractional calculus. Abstract:In recent years, the use of variable-order differential operators has emerged as a powerful tool in the analysis of nonlinear fractional differential equations and chaotic systems. In finance, the accurate prediction of market trends and the ability to make informed investment decisions is of great importance, and the integration of artificial intelligence and mathematics has greatly improved the accuracy of these predictions. In this study, we displayed an analysis of adaptive equations produced by three fractional derivatives: the Riemann-Lioville, Caputo-Fabrizio, and Atangana-Baleanu fractional derivatives. These fractional derivatives were employed to analyze financial models in order to gain a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics of financial markets. The models studied were the Lorenz system, Rossler system, and Shilnikov cashless model. The results showed that each fractional derivative produced varying outcomes and computation times, highlighting the importance of selecting the appropriate mathematical approach and software for financial modeling. The findings of this study underscore the continued integration of Artificial Intelligence and mathematics in financial analysis and decision-making, driving the future of investment strategies and market predictions.The application of variable-order differential operators in the analysis of nonlinear fractional differential equations and chaotic systems is an important and growing area of research that holds great promise for the field of finance.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss a concept of dynamic memory and an application of fractional calculus to describe the dynamic memory. The concept of memory is considered from the standpoint of economic models in the framework of continuous time approach based on fractional calculus. We also describe some general restrictions that can be imposed on the structure and properties of dynamic memory. These restrictions include the following three principles: (a) the principle of fading memory; (b) the principle of memory homogeneity on time (the principle of non-aging memory); (c) the principle of memory reversibility (the principle of memory recovery). Examples of different memory functions are suggested by using the fractional calculus. To illustrate an application of the concept of dynamic memory in economics we consider a generalization of the Harrod–Domar model, where the power-law memory is taken into account.

Abstract:We study problems of the calculus of variations and optimal control within the framework of time scales. Specifically, we obtain Euler-Lagrange type equations for both Lagrangians depending on higher order delta derivatives and isoperimetric problems. We also develop some direct methods to solve certain classes of variational problems via dynamic inequalities. In the last chapter we introduce fractional difference operators and propose a new discrete-time fractional calculus of variations. Corresponding Euler-Lagrange and Legendre necessary optimality conditions are derived and some illustrative examples provided.
