Abstract:Effect of severe plastic deformation (extrusion) on the structure and mechanical properties of the Mg–0.8Ca alloy for biomedical applications is investigated. The alloy was deformed by extrusion with an accumulative strain value e = 1.46. It is shown that extrusion leads to formation of a bimodal structure which is dispersedly strengthened by Mg2Ca particles. The bimodal structure consists of the α-phase grains with an average size of 9 µm and the α-phase grains with a size of less than 1 µm, the volume fraction of which is 40%. In contrast to the recrystallized structure, the bimodal structure contributes to an increase in the yield point, strength, microhardness and plasticity of the alloy. An increase in the mechanical properties and plasticity of the Mg–0.8Ca alloy is caused by the dislocation hardening mechanism and by the presence of texture.
