Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. Waterproof and moisture permeable composite fabric with electrospun nanofibrous membrane has been widely used, because of its high specific surface area, high porosity, small pore size, uniform pore distribution and light weight. However, there are fewer studies on fabricating waterproof and permeable composite fabric with optimal polyvinylidene fluoride/polyvinylidene fluoride hexafluoropropylene electrospun nanofibrous membrane by multi-needle cross-electrospinning technology and hot-press process. In this study, excellent waterproof and moisture permeable polyvinylidene fluoride/polyvinylidene fluoride hexafluoropropylene electrospun nanofibrous membranes with the optimal process conditions were prepared through central combination design with Design Expert 8.0.5 and experimental validation. The composite fabrics with three different adhesives were prepared. The contact angle, waterproof and moisture permeability, and mechanical properties of composite fabrics were tested. The results showed that CF-1 had better performance with high hydrostatic pressure of 9840 mmH2O, strong moisture permeability of 10,280 g · m−2 · d−1, and excellent peel strength and tensile tenacity. It was of great significance to realize the industrial production of waterproof and breathable composite fabric with electrospun nanofibrous membrane by multi-needle cross-electrospinning technology and hot-press process.

Abstract:Recently, waterproof and breathable materials have attracted extensive attention and have been used in a broad range of applications such as clothing, sports equipment, medical hygiene products, and other fields. In this study, an efficient chemical modification method was suggested to prepare polyurethane/SiO2 nanofibrous membranes with superhydrophobicity and durability. A polyurethane emulsion was treated with 4,4 '-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. This emulsion process was combined with the emulsion electrospinning technique and a hydrothermal-assisted sol-gel process to prepare superhydrophobic polyurethane nanofibrous membranes. The final polyurethane/SiO2 nanofibrous membranes exhibited a hydrostatic pressure of 8.02 kPa, an air permeability of 3.89 mms(-1), and a water vapor transmission rate of 10.12 kg m(-2) d(-1). Results also showed that the water contact angle of the nanofibrous membranes reached 154 degrees, and the stress and strain were 5.3 MPa and 198%, respectively. In addition, the adhesion between SiO2 and the PU nanofibrous membranes was high, and the weight loss rate of SiO2 remained at approximately 9.72% after the ultrasonic cleaning time exceeded 24 h. These results suggested that the PU/SiO2 nanofibrous membranes were expected to provide a new perspective for waterproofing and moisture permeability.

Abstract:A fluorine‐free polyurethane (PU)/poly(styrene‐b‐s‐b‐styrene) (SBS) nanofibre membrane was prepared by a facile direct electrospinning method. The hydrophobicity, waterproofness and mechanical properties of the PU nanofibre membranes were dramatically enhanced by the addition of SBS. The π–π interactions between the PU and SBS were demonstrated by FTIR and XRD measurements. The improvement in the performances of the PU/SBS nanofibre membrane could be attributed to the π–π interactions between PU and SBS. The prepared PU/SBS nanofibre membrane exhibited satisfactory waterproofing (hydrostatic pressure, 47.4 kPa), acceptable breathability (water vapour transmission rate, 5.6 kg m−2 d−1) and excellent mechanical properties (ultimate strength, 5.7 MPa; elongation at break, 387.9%). Waterproof and breathable nanofiber membranes are highly desirable for protective textiles; however, the practical application of nanofiber membranes is limited by fluorine‐containing material addition or complicated post‐treatment. Herein, we reported unique fluorine‐free polyurethane (PU)/poly(styrene‐b‐s‐b‐styrene) (SBS) nanofiber membranes by a facile direct electrospinning. Owing to the addition of SBS, the hydrophobicity, waterproofness, and mechanical properties of PU nanofiber membranes were dramatically enhanced. Furthermore, the highly interconnective channels were constructed after the introduction of SBS into the PU nanofiber membrane, which resulted in enhanced breathability. The enhancement in the comprehensive performance of the PU/SBS composite nanofiber membrane might be attributed to the π–π interactions between SBS and PU. By adjusting the concentration of the PU/SBS, fluorine‐free PU/SBS nanofiber membranes were optimized systematically, exhibiting satisfactory waterproofness (hydrostatic pressure, 47.4 kPa), acceptable breathability (water vapor transition rate, 5.6 kg m−2 d−1), and outstanding mechanical properties (breaking strength, 5.7 MPa; breaking elongation, 387.9%). The PU/SBS‐14 nanofiber membrane is ideal for wearable textiles, especially for outdoor protective clothing, wound dressings, and medical gowns.

Abstract:In this work, a waterproof and breathable nanofibrous membrane with thermal‐regulated performance and exhibits excellent mechanical property is fabricated by coaxial electrospinning. The fiber shell is consisted of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinyl butyral (PVB), and the core is octadecane. First, well‐performed waterproof and breathable membranes are obtained by optimizing its morphology and pore structure. Then octadecane is loaded into the fibers in the form of core by coaxial electrospinning, though it gives the membranes a thermal regulating function, but the drawback is the sacrifice of overall properties. Thus, carbon nanotubes are loaded into the shell and studied, finally, the best membrane has a comprehensive performance with hydrostatic pressure of 59.2 kPa, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 7.846 kg m−2 d−1, latent heat of 50.1 J g−1, as well as excellent tensile strength of 20.2 MPa, which shows its certain reference significance to the synthesis of multifunctional membrane.

Abstract:Waterproof breathable membranes (WBMs) have attracted intense research interest due to their wide applications, however, there are still great challenges in effectively preparing WBMs with desirable waterproofness, breathability and elasticity. Here, a facile and scalable fabricating strategy combining electrospinning and electrospraying is proposed to manufacture nanofiber WBMs, which are comprised of both hydrophobic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanofibers and inter-fiber polyvinyl butyral (PVB) bonding containing a short perfluoroalkyl hydrophobic agent. The obtained composite nanofiber membranes showed durable water/oil repellent properties against ultrasonic washing and abrasion. The interconnected fibrous structure together with liquid repellent surface have endowed the WBMs with comprehensive properties with hydrostatic pressure of 73.7 kPa, water vapor transmission rate of 6.88 kg m−2 d−1, outstanding tensile strength of 25.72 MPa and large elongation at break of 217%, which have exceeded the majority of their nanofiber counterparts. This work could provide a novel approach for the preparation of waterproof and breathable membranes with balanced structural stability, waterproofness and wearing comfort, especially suitable for the personal protective material application.

Abstract:To meet the increasing environmental requirements, it is urgent and inevitable for high-performance waterproof and breathable membranes to be fluorine-free. However, developing these membranes faces significant challenges in achieving high water repellency while maintaining desirable water vapor permeability. Herein, we present a high-performance fluorine-free waterproof and breathable membrane using electrospinning technology and a thermally induced coating-crosslinking method. The prepared nanofibrous membrane has low surface energy and crosslinked fiber networks due to hydrophobic group grafting and heat treatment. Benefiting from its microstructure and surface properties, the fluorine-free nanofibrous membrane exhibits excellent hydrophobicity (water contact angle of >130°), desirable pore structure and mechanical strength. Furthermore, the obtained non-fluorinated membrane exhibits an excellent water pressure resistance of 95.27 kPa and a water vapor transport rate of 7.41 kg m -2 d -1 . Meanwhile, the cross-linking agent enhances the bond between the non-fluorinated hydrophobic modifier and the substrate, increasing the stability and robustness of the membrane. This study provides guidance for designing and preparing environmentally friendly waterproof and breathable membranes, with extensive application prospects in outdoor sports, healthcare protection and building exteriors.

Abstract:Membranes with the functions of waterproofness and breathability are of great interest due to their huge scientific and commercial value in many practical applications. However, designing such membranes with a desirable performance by simple and efficient fabrication process remains a tremendous challenge. Herein, novel binary structured composite fibrous membranes were developed for waterproof and breathable applications via simple one-step multi-jet electrospinning technology. This composite membranes were made up of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN). PVDF was incorporated into the PAN fiber matrix as a modifier to improve the hydrophobic behavior of fibers. Meanwhile, PVDF microspheres/fibers were employed as building blocks to orderly embed in PAN/PVDF fiber framework, imparting the composite membranes with fluffy micro-nano hierarchical structures. Consequently, with the integrated features of robust hydrophobicity as well as elaborate fiber-microsphere binary structure, the resultant composite membranes exhibited synergistically modest waterproof and breathable performances with the hydrostatic pressure of 18.04 kPa, water vapor transmittance (WVT) rate of 4.65 kg m−2 d−1, and air permeability of 64.19 mm s−1. This simple preparation process and unique composite structure may provide a new insight to design and fabricate waterproof and breathable membranes for variously potential applications, including the protective clothing, separation membrane, and filter.

Abstract:Waterproof breathable functional membranes have broad application prospects in the field of outdoors textiles. The fluorine-containing microporous membranes of the mainstream functional products easily cause harm to the environment, and thus, the fluorine-free environmental nanofibrous membranes are an important development direction for functional membranes. In this subject, the electrospun polyacrylonitrile nanofibrous membranes were first hydrophobically modified by amino functional modified polysiloxane (AMP), followed by in situ cross-linking modified with 4, 4'-methyl diphenylene diisocyanate (MDI). The fluorine-free modification by AMP altered the surface of the membranes from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, and greatly improved the waterproof properties with the hydrostatic pressure reaching to 87.6 kPa. In addition, the formation of bonding points and the in situ preparation of polyuria through the reaction between the isocyanate in MDI and the amino group in AMP, could improve the mechanical properties effectively. When using AMP with the concentration of 1 wt% and MDI with the concentration of 2 wt%, the relatively good comprehensive performance was obtained with good water resistance (93.8 kPa), modest vapor permeability (4.7 kg m−2 d−1) and air permeability (12.7 mm/s). Based on these testing data, the modified nanofibrous membranes had excellent waterproof and breathable properties, which has future potential in outdoor sports apparel.

Abstract:Waterproof and breathable nanofiber membrane (WBM) is the core of the waterproof and breathable textile. At present, it is difficult to achieve simultaneous improvement of waterproofness, breathability and mechanical properties due to the limitation of material properties and preparation technology. Herein, an environmentally friendly and high-performing fluorine-free silicon-based polyurethane/polymethyl methacrylate/polyvinyl butyral (Si-PU/PMMA/PVB) WBMs were prepared via a facile electrospinning technology and post-heat treatment. By heating treatment, inter-fiber adhesion was achieved due to the melt of PVB, leading to a decrease in the maximum pore size of the fiber membrane, which enhances the waterproof ability. At the same time, the generated inter-fiber adhesion enhanced the interaction force between fibers, and thus improved the mechanical properties. The as-prepared PU/PMMA/PVB-40 WBM exhibits good water resistance with a hydrostatic pressure of 65.29 kPa, exceptional breathability with a water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 7.0 kg m -2 d -1 , together with a high tensile strength of 11.52 MPa. The obtained Si-PU/PMMA/PVB WBMs have broad application prospects in special protective clothing and outdoor equipment.

Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. Waterproof and breathable fibrous membrane is a new type of polymer functional material widely used in outdoor protection, sports equipment, industrial production, and other fields. To impart waterproof ability and breathability, a common practice is to modify the electrospun membrane with low surface-energy materials, such as fluorosilane. However, when directly added to the electrospinning solution, the effects of fluorosilane on the property of the prepared membrane have been scarcely reported. Herein, we prepared the electrospun polyurethane membrane by adding two types of fluorosilane into the polyurethane solution. The effects of fluorosilane type and concentration on the conductivity and viscosity of the electrospinning solution were investigated. Moreover, the prepared polyurethane/fluorosilane fibrous membranes are analyzed in terms of their surface morphology, structure, water contact angle, breathable performance, and mechanical properties. Results show that the dual effects of fluorosilane content exert an opposing influence on the jet drawing process, which yields a minimum fiber diameter when the fluorosilane content is 20%. Under this condition, the membrane shows the highest water vapor transmission rate (10.4 kg/(m2·d). In addition the membranes have the maximum water contact angle (138°) and breaking strength (12 MPa) when the fluorosilane content is 40%. This study provides insights into fabricating electrospun waterproof and breathable membranes in equipment for outdoor sports and protection.

Abstract:Waterproof and breathable (W&B) membranes, resisting the intrusion of liquid water while allowing transmission of vapor, have been widely applied in various applications. However, there are still great challenges to construct superhydrophobic and mechanically robust W&B membranes. Here, we present a facile strategy to prepare superhydrophobic nanofibrous membranes by combining humidity-induced electrospinning with thermal-pressing treatment. The hierarchical rough structures generated by humidity-induced phase separation of polyvinylidene fluoride jets endow the fiber with superhydrophobicity. Meanwhile, the thermal-pressing manipulation ensures that strong physical bonding exists between nanofibers, which greatly improves the membrane's mechanical and waterproof performances. Significantly, the resulted membranes exhibited desirable superhydrophobicity with water contact angle of 151°, remarkable water and oil intrusion pressures of 81.8 and 36.2 kPa, respectively, high water vapor transmission rate of 7948 g m −2 d −1 , and satisfactory tensile strength of 8.1 MPa. The successful development of such membranes provides a new inspiration for the manufacture of superhydrophobic protective membranes.

Abstract:Polyurethane is a thermoplastic elastomer with excellent physical and chemical properties, the hydrophilicity of PU limits the wide application in the waterproof and breathable materials market. In this study, SiO2 nanoparticles were hydrophobically modified by fluorosilane to prepare the fluorosilane-modified silica (F-SiO2), then it was added into the synthesized polyurethane to prepare waterproof and breathable film (F-SiO2/PU) by electrospinning. Compared with polyurethane membranes, F-SiO2/PU composite membranes could form rough morphological surface through the blending of F-SiO2. The experimental results showed that the water contact angle of the composite nanofiber membranes increase with the addition of the amount of modified silica, and the water contact angle reached 135 o when the dosage of F-SiO2 was 5 wt%. The composite nanofiber membranes could be endowed with excellent waterproof performance, hydrophobicity (50 kPa) and moisture permeability (10.4 kg/m2•h). Besides, the prepared membrane can remain the hydrophobic property stability under the dynamic tensile of large-scale deformation.

Abstract:Waterproof and breathable membranes (WBMs) are highly desirable for protective textiles; however, the practical application of existing polyamide nanofibrous WBMs is limited by poor breathability, complicated post-treatments, and toxic-solvent processing. Herein, we present unique fluorine-free polyamide/polydimethylsiloxane (PA/PDMS) composite nanofibrous WBMs by direct electrospinning using alcohol-based green solvents. Highly interconnective channels with robust hydrophobicity are constructed within polyamide nanofibrous WBMs with in-situ incorporation of PDMS by one-step spinning without any post treatments. The resulting PA/PDMS membranes exhibit outstanding air permeability (12.7 mm s−1), high moisture permeability (3.77 kg m−2 d−1), and good hydrostatic pressure (28.3 kPa), suggesting promising utility for outdoor clothing, medical gowns, and wound dressings. The successful synthesis of alcohol-solvent-based fluorine-free PA/PDMS nanofibrous WBMs by facile direct spinning strategy may pave a new way to develop future green polyamide textiles.

Abstract:Developing environmentally friendly and high-performing viable waterproof and breathable membranes (WBMs) is critical but significantly challenging. Herein, we combine electrospinning and electro-spraying methods. First, elastic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is used as the polymer, and poly(methylhydrosiloxane) (PMHS) with low surface energy is introduced to prepare TPU/PMHS fiber-based membranes by electrospinning. Electro-spraying is performed using a dilute solution of TPU/PMHS/SiO2, with fluorine-free hydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticles introduced to facilitate the construction of a rough lotus-leaf-like surface structure, ultimately obtaining TPU/PMHS/SiO2 WBMs with bead-on-string fiber binary structures and a strong water repellency. The results indicate that the TPU/PMHS/SiO2 WBMs comprise a three-dimensional porous structure formed by randomly arranged fibers and a lotus biomimetic structure consisting of bead-like fibers, providing the membrane with excellent mechanical properties and waterproof breathability, including a tensile strength of 15.8 MPa, static water pressure of 33 kPa, water vapor transmission rate of 5169 g m-2 d-1, and contact angle of 142 degrees. Additionally, the fiber membrane exhibits an excellent strain recovery after 1000 cycles of cyclic stretching under 100% strain, verifying the excellent elastic properties of the TPU/PMHS/SiO2 WBMs. This simple preparation process and unique composite structure can facilitate the design and preparation of environmentally friendly, waterproof, and breathable materials. Abstract:In the face of changing outdoor environments, it is necessary for us to develop advanced textiles with thermal regulation and hydrophobic properties. In order to create a fabric with both temperature control and waterproof properties, the study adjusted the ratio of polystyrene (PS) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to produce nanofiber membranes with excellent morphology and dirt resistant properties. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of the nanofibers was further improved by adding SiO2 to the spinning solution. Based on this, a core solution of octadecane (Oct) was used to give it thermal regulation functionality through coaxial electrospinning technique. The resulting composite nanofiber membrane exhibited excellent hydrophobicity and thermal regulation performance. The measurement results obtained from Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) indicate that the maximum Oct encapsulation rate of the PS/PVDF/SiO2@Oct nanofiber membrane is 58.36%. The latent heat of the composite nanofiber membrane is 148.84 J/g, and the water contact angle (WCA) is 135°. The multifunctional composite nanofiber has great potential for applications in outdoor protective clothing and outdoor electronic device protection.

Abstract:Waterproof and breathable membranes, which have great potential in applications such as membrane distillation, self-cleaning, and multifunctional clothing, have attracted a lot of attention due to their superior performance. Superhydrophobic and infrared-invisible polyurethane (PU)/silica (SiO2) nanofiber microporous membranes were prepared by facile electrospinning and a hydrothermal-assisted sol-gel method. Compared with pure PU nanofiber membranes, silica nanoparticles act as an adhesion layer, which can provide the rough surface and low surface energy of fibrous membranes. Therefore, the grafted PU/SiO2 nanofiber membrane was endowed with a good superhydrophobic effect, and its water contact angle (WCA) reached 161°. The nanofiber membrane exhibited comfortable waterproof and breathable properties, in which the air permeability and water vapor transfer rate was 5.18 mm s-1 and 7.85 kg m-2 d-1, respectively. When the PU/SiO2 nanofiber membrane was irradiated by infrared light, the surface of the fiber membrane showed a green, low-temperature state. These waterproof and breathable nanofiber membranes with superhydrophobic properties could be used in anti-icing, outdoor concealment, and camouflage applications.
