Abstract:Humic acid (HA) in water is the main precursor of disinfection by-products in the chlorination process of drinking water. In this study, an ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) process, in a laboratory-scale system, is successful in the degradation of HA. The results showed that HA was significantly degraded (UV254 removal rate of ~ 89%) and partially mineralized (~ 62.5%) by UV/PS treatment at a PS dose of 0.4 mM, pH of 7.12, and UV irradiation time of 160 min. The trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) was also significantly reduced (THMFP reduction of ~ 85.4%). A strong linear relationship was observed between UV254 and dissolved organic carbon. The removal rate of HA at low pH was better than that at high pH conditions, and the inhibition by Cl− slowed down after an initial increase, and the inhibition was weaker than HCO3−. By analyzing the fluorescence spectrum of two humic-like substances, the fluorescent compounds C1 and C2 in HA were significantly degraded, and the change in C1 and C2 concentration was correlated with the decrease of THMFP. The degradation of different fractions of natural organic matter in real-world water samples indicated that UV/PS has significant potential to decrease HA in water.

Abstract:UV-assisted photoelectrochemical processes (UV/E) that produce reactive species are extensively used for degrading pollutants in water, such as natural organic matter (NOM). However, the consequence of the chlo-rinated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) from smaller compounds broken down is not clear in the UV/E. In this study, excitation-emission matrices (EEM) and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) were applied to determine the products formed during decomposition and the influence of UV/E processes on the formation of DBPs. In comparison with UV photochemical and electrochemical processes, the deterioration rate of NOM in the UV/E process rose by 68.45% and 54.47% in 70 min, while it increased up to 48.85% under the electrochemical process in 23 h. Not only does the reaction time affect the degradation, but the electrolyte concentration and current density also disturb it. The EEM peak locations were 275 nm/495 nm (Component 1), 275 nm/410 nm (Component 2), 230 nm/405 nm (Component 3), and <220 nm/290 nm (Component 4), which were considered to humic acids, hum-like compounds, fulvic acid-like compounds, and aromatic proteins, respectively. C1 and C2 were well relevant to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and UV254 (r = 0.925-0.963, p < 0.01) and the formation of MCAA, DCAA, and TCAA were strongly interrelated with UV254 and DOC (r =-0.711 to-0.584). The generation of DBPs has a good correlation with C2 (r = - 0.673, p < 0.01). DBPs formation and calculated theoretical cytotoxicity were significantly suppressed by the UV/E process with a higher degradation of NOM. A similar amount of DBPs formation was obtained while 52.6% and 82.90% of the DOC was reduced under the electrochemical process and the UV/E process, indicating that a lower DBPs production and higher degradation efficiency in the UV/E process. It was supposed that the UV/E process could be an alternative for natural organic matter oxidation with properly controlled DBP formation.

Abstract:Natural organic matter (NOM), commonly found in surface and ground waters, form disinfection by-products in drinking water. Generally, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) featuring hydrogen peroxide are used to treat water; however, sulfate radical recently has been used to treat recalcitrant organics, because it is associated with a higher oxidation potential and more effective removal than hydroxyl radicals. Hence, in this research, we evaluated persulfate oxidation efficiency in terms of reductions in humic substance levels and investigated the degradation mechanism. The results showed that ultraviolet-activated persulfate effectively treated humic substances compared with hydrogen peroxide and direct irradiation. Treatment was dose and wavelength dependent; higher persulfate concentrations or shorter UV wavelengths were more effective for treating humic substances as high concentration sulfate radicals were created. The degradation mechanism was similar to that of hydrogen peroxide. Aromatic and chromophore components were more susceptible to degradation than were lower molecular weight components, being initially decomposed into the latter, reducing UV254 absorbance and the SUVA254. Lower molecular weight materials were eventually degraded to end products: NPOC levels fell. And we also treated the inflow of a drinking water treatment plant with persulfate, and humic substances were effectively removed.

Abstract:In this study, degradation of humic acid (HA) via photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) process and corresponding disinfection byproduct formation potential (DBPFP) were investigated. Particularly, structure variation and subsequent DBPFP of HA during PEC treatment were correlated. The PEC process was found to be effective in reducing dissolved organic carbon concentration by 75.0% and UV absorbance at 254 nm by 92.0%. Furthermore, 90.3% of haloacetic acids formation potential and 89.8% of trihalomethanes formation potential were reduced within 180 min. Based on molecular weight and resin fraction results, it was demonstrated that HA with large aromatic, hydrophobic and long aliphatic chain organics were transformed into small and hydrophilic organics during PEC process. Combined with the fourier transform infrared spectra and (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra analysis of HA fractions, it was concluded that phenolic hydroxyl and conjugated double bonds tended to be attacked by hydroxyl radicals during PEC process; these groups were reactive with chlorine to produce disinfection byproducts (DBP), especially trihalomethane and trichloroacetic acid. By contrast, amino, carboxyl and alcoholic hydroxyl groups were relatively difficult to be oxidized during PEC process; these groups had the potential to form dichloroacetic acid during chlorination. Results of these studies confirmed that PEC process was a safe and effective technique to decrease DBP formation significantly in water treatment plant.

Abstract:Methylene blue dye has been widely used in many industries and usually released in natural water sources, which become a health thereat to human-beings and microbes. This paper demonstrates an oxidation method to remove methylene blue in water. The effect of natural organic matter humic acid, on the degradation of methylene blue using PMS was investigated. The results show that PMS could effectively degrade 50 mg/L methylene blue (>95%) when the PMS concentration was larger than 1.0 mM. Humic acid had either negative or positive impact on the degradation processes because of the co-existence of several competitive degradation mechanisms (I: humic acid competes with methylene blue for PMS; II: humic acid activates PMS to produce sulfate radicals; III: Cl–1 competes with methylene blue for sulfate radicals). This study is expected to provide valuable information to improve in situ remediation of dye-contaminated wastewater in the existence of natural organic matters.
Effect of Hybrid Photocatalysis and Ceramic Membrane Filtration Process for Humic Acid Degradation

Abstract:The photocatalytic degradation of humic acid (HA) in aqueous suspension using commercial TiO2 powder (Degussa P 25) irradiated with UV light was investigated. Photocatalytic experiments were carried out as an individual treatment and combined with ceramic membranefiltration. In this study, the photocatalytic oxidation of HA was investigated and compared at different operating conditions. The effects of operating parameters such as TiO2 concentrations, HA concentrations, and UV intensity were evaluated on the performance of photocatalytic oxidation process. The effect of salinity on the performance of combined photocatalysis and ceramic microfiltration (MF) system was investigated. The interaction between the components in the system, HA, NaCl, and TiO2 photocatalyst, played an important role in the observed flux change during ceramic MF. The result showed that TiO2 concentrations of 0.5 g/L resulted in significant HA removals of more than 80% after 120 min of photocatalytic oxidation process alone. The result shows that the flux decline was lower in the presence of NaCl compared to absence of NaCl. The observed permeate flux decline behavior during ceramic MF was associated with the composition of HA, and NaCl and TiO2 concentrations after photocatalytic treatment. The results for this hybrid system showed that the DOC removal was 48% in the absence of NaCl and 51 and 55% for 500 and 1000 mg/L NaCl concentrations, respectively after 75 min (15 min dark and 60 min photocatalytic reaction) of photocatalysis and 30 min of ceramic MF. On the other hand, the reduction in UV absorbance with and without NaCl concentrations was more than 75% for this hybrid system.
Removal of Disinfection Byproducts and Toxicity of Chlorinated Water by Post-Treatments of Ultraviolet/hydrogen Peroxide and Ultraviolet /Peroxymonosulfate

Abstract:Post-treatment of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is not efficient in eliminating toxicity of chlorinated water. Removal of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and toxicity of chlorinated water by UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/ H2O2 ) and UV/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) was investigated. In the absence of bromide, adding H2O2 or PMS enhanced the removal of nitrogenous DBPs and total organic chlorine (TOCl) than UV alone (1200 mJ/cm(2)). UV/ PMS decreased the cytotoxicity from 10.6 to 4.4 mg-Phenol/L and genotoxicity from 7.1 to 2.0 mu g-4-NQO/L, more efficient than UV/H2O2. However, results were quite different in the presence of bromide. PMS led to the increased formation of total organic bromine (TOBr) in chlorinated water. UV/PMS was therefore less efficient in toxicity removal than UV/H2O2 . In the presence of bromide, UV/H2O2 decreased the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity by 85% and 68%, while UV/PMS only removed the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity by 59% and 46%. In the UV/PMS process, SO4'- was more efficient on toxicity removal than 'OH. Contributions of UV irradiation, 'OH and SO4'- were 55%, 14% and 31% to cytotoxicity removal, and 49%, 15% and 36% to genotoxicity removal. This study demonstrated the feasibility of using UV/H2O2 and UV/PMS as post-treatments to enhance the removal of DBPs and toxicity of chlorinated water.

Abstract:The synergistic effect of ultraviolet light (UV) and chlorine on the structural transformation of Humic Acid (HA) and formation of chloro-disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in water were investigated, with chlorination as a reference. The transformation and mineralization of HA were enhanced upon co-exposure to UV and chlorine. Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies revealed that hydroxyl radical (OH) and chlorine radical (Cl) were predominant active species in a pH range from 4 to 7, while Cl dominated at pH 2 and pH higher than 7. The impact of different radicals on the transformation of HA was investigated by UV254, fluorescence and TOC measurements. OH were found to be responsible for the removal of chromophoric groups and mineralization of HA, while Cl mainly reacted with HA and intermediates from HA degradation. Due to the competitive and synergistic reaction of OH and Cl with HA, higher removal of HA and lower formation of chloro-DBPs appeared in UV-chlorine than chlorination, thus the combined UV-chlorine processes should be a promising method for water purification.
Removal of Typical Volatile Organic Compounds in Condensed Freshwater by Activated Persulfate During Interfacial Solar Distillation

Abstract:Recently, seawater desalination based on interfacial solar heating has attracted attention because of its environmental protection and high photothermal conversion efficiency. However, the high air-water interface temperature may cause freshwater quality safety risks because the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in seawater are more likely to evaporate and condense into freshwater. In this work, typical VOCs (phenol) were prevented from entering into the condensed freshwater by using activated persulfate to take full advantage of interfacial solar distillation. The results showed that the addition of both peroxodisulfate (PDS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) could effectively reduce the concentration of phenol in condensed freshwater. The phenol's distillation concentration rate (R-D) was reduced from 74.4% to 14.3% with PMS and 20.5% with PDS. The Cl- was the main factor for activation of PMS, while carbon black, light, and heat were the main factors for activation of PDS. Meanwhile, PMS is better suited for removing VOCs due to its lower oxidant dosage and chlorinated disinfection byproducts compared with PDS. Finally, when real seawater samples were used as the source water for solar distillation, the water quality of typical indicators was lower than the limits set by Drinking Water Quality in China, US EPA, and WHO.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a stable perfluoro-surfactant due to the contribution of electronegative fluorine atoms and the high strength of CF bonds (116 kcal/mol). However, UV irradiation of iodide at 254 nm produces hydrated electrons (e aq −) that react with PFOA to initiate its photo-reductive decomposition. In this study, we investigate the role of humic acid (HA) during the decomposition of PFOA at λmax = 254 nm as mediated by the formation of e aq −. Results show that, in UV/iodide/HA system, the decomposition and defluorination ratios of PFOA at 1.5 h were increased to 67.5% and 23.5%, respectively, compared with iodide-photolysis alone results as 8.7% and 3.3%, respectively, at room temperature (25 °C) and pH 10.0 under anaerobic conditions. Kinetic analysis indicated that the PFOA decomposition fit the first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.822 h−1. Reaction mechanism accounting for the effects of HA on the photo-reductive decomposition of PFOA is proposed that the aromatic rings of HA react with I2 to form π-complexes, which effectively inhibits the reactive quenching of e aq − by I2. After adduct formation and subsequent oxidation of phenolic hydroxy groups by I2, I− is regenerated, which allows for the continuous photo-production of e aq −. The quinone moieties in HA effectively act as electron shuttles leading to the reduction of I2 back to 2 I−. The reaction sequence involving HA provides a catalytic cycle that leads to the continuous production of e aq −, which in turn drives the decomposition and defluorination of PFOA.

Distribution characteristics and degradation effect of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in different humus acid components

Abstract:In this study,we focused on the distribution characteristics of PAHs among humic acid,tulvic acid and humin at different aging time.Furthermore,sodium persuffate,potassium permanganate,Fenton and hydrogen peroxide were chosen as oxidants and the distribution and oxidative degradation efficiencies of PAHs in humus acid components and supernatant in the process of oxidation were explored.Results from batch experiments showed that the adsorption of humic had distinct hysteresis with a lower sorption rate and capacity at the early stage of aging.However,the sorption capacity became higher at later stage,so there were no significant differences among the three components.Compare to the low and medium rings PAHs,the high rings had a lower sorption rate and capacity.Sodium persulfate and potassium permanganate obtained better oxidation efficiencies of PAHs around 95％,but the efficiencies of Fenton were in the range of 79.36％～ 88.05％.The removal effects of humic acid and humin were 82.82％ and 61.77％,respectively,while the removal of PAHs in fulvic acid was the lowest (43.96％).In summary,sodium persulfate and potassium permanganate were both optimum for the remediation of PAHs contaminated site,which could improve the removal of PAHs in various components in humus acid.

Efficient degradation of haloacetic acids by vacuum ultraviolet-activated peroxymonosulfate: Kinetics, mechanisms and theoretical calculations

Abstract:Efficient degradation of haloacetic acids (HAAs) is crucial due to their potential risks. This study firstly proposed vacuum ultraviolet - activated peroxymonosulfate (VUV/PMS) to remove HAAs (i.e., monochloroacetic acid (MCAA), monobromoacetic acid (MBAA), dichloroacetic acid (DCAA), etc). VUV/PMS achieved 99.51 % MCAA and 63.29 % TOC removal within 10 min. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), quenching and probe experiments demonstrated that •OH was responsible for MCAA degradation. MCAA degradation followed pathways of dehalogenation (major) and decarboxylation (minor). VUV/PMS showed application potential under various reaction parameters. Broad spectrum of VUV/PMS on various HAAs was further explored. Chlorinated HAAs (Cl-HAAs) were primarily degraded by oxidation reactions, while brominated HAAs (Br-HAAs) by direct VUV photolysis. The density functional theory-based calculations (DFT) revealed that reaction rates of HAAs correlated with the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and energy gap (ΔE), indicating that HAAs degradation depends on their chemical structures. The Fukui function (f0 values) and bond length showed vulnerability of the halogen atom in Cl-HAAs and C-Br bond in Br-HAAs. Overall, this study provides an in-depth perspective on the oxidation performance and mechanism of HAAs using VUV/PMS. It not only demonstrates a green and efficient method but also inspires new strategies for HAAs remediation.
Effect of UV/peroxymonosulfate pretreatment on disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation during post-chlorination of humic acid

Abstract:UV/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) is a promising advanced oxidation technology in water treatment. This study aimed to investigate the impact of UV/PMS on humic acid (HA) and the influence of PMS dosage, pretreatment time, pH pretreatment, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, and bicarbonate influencing factors on disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation during post-chlorination. With increased PMS dosage or pretreatment time, the UV/PMS treatment significantly reduced ultraviolet absorbance and increased mineralization. It altered the fractional constituent as humic substances were gradually transformed into building blocks and low-molecular-weight acids. However, most DBP formation increased initially and then decreased after subsequent chlorination. Rising nitrate or nitrite concentrations markedly promoted halonitromethane (HNM) formation. The presence of ammonia had a more significant impact on dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) formation. Bicarbonate in UV/PMS pretreatment increased carbonated disinfection byproduct (C-DBP) formation, whereas it had a negligible impact on nitrogenous disinfection byproduct (N-DBP) formation. The present study revealed the impact of a series of influencing factors on DBP formation in UV/PMS reaction systems, providing comprehensive insights on applying UV/PMS in actual practice.
Effects of Humic Acid on Pentachlorophenol Biodegrading Microorganisms Elucidated by Stable Isotope Probing and High‐throughput Sequencing Approaches

Abstract:Humic substances (HSs) are ubiquitous in soil and can be reversibly oxidized and reduced by acting as redox mediators. They participate in microbial metabolism and directly affect the biodegradation of organic pollutants. However, the effects of HSs on specific microbial taxa that are responsible for the degradation of organic pollutants remain unclear. In this research, the effects of humic acids (HAs), extracted from three types of soil, forest (CBHA), paddy (PSHA) and peat (YNHA) on the microbial community involved in anaerobic mineralization of pentachlorophenol (PCP) were investigated with high‐throughput sequencing and stable isotope probing (SIP) approaches. The results showed that all HA samples accelerated the biotransformation processes of PCP; the largest rate was obtained with YNHA. Illumina sequencing revealed that Desulfovibrio and Clostridium were the dominant functional bacteria for the dechlorination of PCP. During the subsequent PCP degradation and mineralization processes, HAs affected the diversity and abundance of microbial communities, and several taxa were enriched in the 13C‐heavy fractions compared with 12C‐heavy fractions. In the absence of HA, Methanobacterium and Spartobacteria showed a significant increase in 13C‐heavy fractions. Methanosarcina and OP11 were the dominant PCP degraders in microcosms when amended with CBHA, whereas Burkholderia and Methanobacterium were the key PCP degraders in PSHA‐ and YNHA‐amended experimental microcosms. These results improve our knowledge of the diversity and ubiquitous nature of HS‐utilizing microorganisms involved in PCP degradation, providing scientific support for the development of in situ bioremediation technologies for HS‐rich soil contaminated by PCP.Highlights All humic acids facilitated biodegradation of pentachlorophenol. The greater the carbon content of HA, the greater was the rate of dechlorination. Clostridium and Desulfovibrio dominated PCP dechlorination. SIP suggested that Methanobacterium, Methanosaricina, OP11, Spartobactria and Burholderia acquired PCP‐derived carbon.

Abstract:Haloacetamides (HAcAms) is ubiquitously found in drinking water, which exhibits strong cytotoxicity and genotoxicity compared with conventional disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Herein, the degradation of HAcAms containing dichloroacetamide (DCAcAm) and trichloroacetamide (TCAcAm) by UV/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process was studied. Degradation kinetics of DCAcAm and TCAcAm conformed to the first-order model, and the corresponding reaction constants were 2.27 × 10−3 and 1.94 × 10−3 s−1, respectively. The degradation rate raised with the increment of PMS dosage. During the investigation of water matrices including Cl–, HCO3 –, and humic acid (HA), HCO3 – and HA inhibited the degradation process whereas the influence of Cl– on the degradation was negligible. As evidenced by trapping test, •OH played the crucial role in the degradation of HAcAms. During the UV/PMS process, dechlorination was the main process. TCAcAm could be oxidized to DCAcAm and acetamide, and further mineralized to Cl–, CO2, H2O, NO2 –, and NO3 –. Our results demonstrated that UV/PMS could be an effective technique to degrade HAcAms in dinking water.Graphical

Degradation of different fractions of natural organic matter in drinking water by the UV/persulfate process

Abstract:The existence of natural organic matter (NOM) causes many problems in drinking water treatment processes. The degradation of different fractions of NOM in drinking water was studied using the ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) process. The NOM was separated into hydrophobic (HPO), transition hydrophilic (TPI) and hydrophilic (HPI) fractions by reverse osmosis and XAD series resins. The effects of degradation were evaluated by dissolved organic carbon (DOC), UV254, three-dimensional fluorescence-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC), and trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP). The results showed that UV/PS process could remove the three fractions of DOC, UV254, as well as the fluorescent components humic acid-like (C1 and C2) and protein-like (C3). The maximum removal rates of DOC of HPO, TPI, and HPI fractions were 34.6%, 38.4%, and 73.9%, respectively, and the maximum removal rates of UV254 were 72.1%, 86.3%, and 86.8%, respectively. The removal rate of the three fluorescent components can reach 100%, and C3 is easier to remove than C1 and C2 under the low PS dosage conditions. The order of kinetic degradation rate constant of UV254 first-order reaction is HPI > TPI > HPO. The optimum pH conditions for the degradation of HPO, TPI, and HPI fractions were acidic, basic, and neutral, respectively. The specific THMFP of HPO was higher than that of TPI and HPI. The specific THMFP of HPO and TPI fractions increased with the increase of radiation time, while the HPI fraction showed the opposite trend. THMFP has different degrees of correlation with DOC, UV254, C1, and C2. This study can provide a theoretical basis for the selection of the UV/PS process for drinking water sources containing NOM with different characteristics.
Humic acid promoted activation of peroxymonosulfate by Fe3S4 for degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol: An experimental and theoretical study

Abstract:Chlorophenols are difficult to degrade and biohazardous in the natural environment. This study demonstrated that humic acid (HA) could promote Fe3S4 activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP), the degradation efficiency of TCP was increased by 33%. The system of Fe3S4-HA/PMS produced more reactive oxygen species, and •OH was the dominant ROS. The genealogy of iron oxides together with S0 on the Fe3S4 surface inhibited PMS activation leading to the significant reduction of TCP degraded (< 70%). These problems could be solved successfully through introducing HA, which facilitated electron transfer and increased the continuous release of iron ions by 2 times. In accordance with the determined density functional theory (DFT), the degradation pathway was put forward, which indicated that TCP dechlorination and oxidation to 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone constituted the main degradation pathway. Furthermore, the intermediates that were produced in the main degradation processes of TCP showed lower toxicity than TCP according to results that were obtained utilizing the calculations of quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) together with Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (TEST). Thus, the Fe3S4-HA/PMS system was demonstrated to be an efficient and safe technology for organic pollutant degradation in contaminated groundwater and surface water environments.

Abstract:Humic acid was taken as a representative to test the effect of γ-irradiation on the precursors of disinfection by-products removal.The results showed that γ-irradiation was efficient in removal of humic acid.The removal rate of humic acid could reach 88.6% at the initial concentration of 10mg·l-1 when 1.0kGy was adopted as the radiation dose.At the same time, loss of total organic carbon was 62.8% and the removal efficiency of color was 76%.With the increase of radiation dose, the Oxidation Reduction Potential first enhanced and then decreased,while it was contrary for the change of electrical conductivity. At the same radiation dose, the removal value was higher when the initial concentration was lower. CO2-3 inhibited the removal rate and the removal was enhanced in a neutral medium. The reaction could be depicted by first order reaction kinetics.
