Abstract:UV-assisted photoelectrochemical processes (UV/E) that produce reactive species are extensively used for degrading pollutants in water, such as natural organic matter (NOM). However, the consequence of the chlo-rinated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) from smaller compounds broken down is not clear in the UV/E. In this study, excitation-emission matrices (EEM) and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) were applied to determine the products formed during decomposition and the influence of UV/E processes on the formation of DBPs. In comparison with UV photochemical and electrochemical processes, the deterioration rate of NOM in the UV/E process rose by 68.45% and 54.47% in 70 min, while it increased up to 48.85% under the electrochemical process in 23 h. Not only does the reaction time affect the degradation, but the electrolyte concentration and current density also disturb it. The EEM peak locations were 275 nm/495 nm (Component 1), 275 nm/410 nm (Component 2), 230 nm/405 nm (Component 3), and <220 nm/290 nm (Component 4), which were considered to humic acids, hum-like compounds, fulvic acid-like compounds, and aromatic proteins, respectively. C1 and C2 were well relevant to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and UV254 (r = 0.925-0.963, p < 0.01) and the formation of MCAA, DCAA, and TCAA were strongly interrelated with UV254 and DOC (r =-0.711 to-0.584). The generation of DBPs has a good correlation with C2 (r = - 0.673, p < 0.01). DBPs formation and calculated theoretical cytotoxicity were significantly suppressed by the UV/E process with a higher degradation of NOM. A similar amount of DBPs formation was obtained while 52.6% and 82.90% of the DOC was reduced under the electrochemical process and the UV/E process, indicating that a lower DBPs production and higher degradation efficiency in the UV/E process. It was supposed that the UV/E process could be an alternative for natural organic matter oxidation with properly controlled DBP formation.

Abstract:Methylene blue dye has been widely used in many industries and usually released in natural water sources, which become a health thereat to human-beings and microbes. This paper demonstrates an oxidation method to remove methylene blue in water. The effect of natural organic matter humic acid, on the degradation of methylene blue using PMS was investigated. The results show that PMS could effectively degrade 50 mg/L methylene blue (>95%) when the PMS concentration was larger than 1.0 mM. Humic acid had either negative or positive impact on the degradation processes because of the co-existence of several competitive degradation mechanisms (I: humic acid competes with methylene blue for PMS; II: humic acid activates PMS to produce sulfate radicals; III: Cl–1 competes with methylene blue for sulfate radicals). This study is expected to provide valuable information to improve in situ remediation of dye-contaminated wastewater in the existence of natural organic matters.

Abstract:The degradation of Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in water by hydrogen peroxide assisted ultraviolet (UV/H2O2) process was investigated in this paper. The UV/H2O2 process appeared to be effective in removal of the MC-LR. MC-LR decomposition was primarily ascribed to production of strong and nonselective oxidant-hydroxyl radicals within the system. The intensity of UV radiation, initial concentration of MC-LR, MC-LR purity, dosages of H2O2, the initial solution pH, and anions present in water, to some extent, influenced the degradation rate of MC-LR. A modified pseudo-first-order kinetic model was developed to predict the removal efficiency under different experimental conditions.

Abstract:Abstract: The photodegradation of meclofenamic acid (MCFA) was investigated using UV irradiation process. Parameters affecting the photodegradation process such as dissolved oxygen, reaction temperature, solution pH, initial MCFA concentration, humic acid, cations and anions were carried out. The intermediate products were identified by HPLC-MS analysis, and a tentative photodegradation pathway of MCFA was proposed. Results show that the photodegradation of MCFA can be modeled by the first-order kinetics. The photodegradation efficiency increases with the decreased concentration of humic acid or the decreased initial MCFA concentration, while the reaction temperature and the inorganic ions have no significant effect on the MCFA removal. It has found that the optimal initial solution pH for MCFA degradation is about 7.0. Finally, the HPLC-MS results reveal that the Cl atom in the MCFA molecule would form Cl–, followed by dechlorination, hydroxylation and cyclization of pentacyclic compounds.

Abstract:Chlorine-incorporating ultraviolet (UV) provides a multiple barrier for drinking water disinfection. Meanwhile, post-UV employment can promote the degradation of micropollutants by radical production from chlorine residual photolysis. This work studied the degradation of one such chemical, tonalide (AHTN), by low-pressure UV-activated free chlorine (FC) under typical UV disinfection dosage of < 200 mJ.cm(-2) and water matrix of filtered tank effluent. AHTN was rapidly degraded by UV/FC in accordance with pseudo-first-order kinetics. The reaction rate constants of AHTN with reactive chlorine species and hydroxyl radical (HO center dot) were estimated. Mechanistic exploration evidenced that under UV/FC, AHTN degradation was attributable to direct photolysis, ClO center dot, and HO center dot. The carbonyl side chain of AHTN served as an important attack site for radicals. Water matrices, such as natural organic matter (NOM), HCO3-, Cu2+, PO43-, and Fe2+, showed noticeable influence on the UV/FC process with an order of NOM > HCO3- > Cu2+ > PO43- > Fe2+. Reaction product analysis showed ignorable formation of chlorinated intermediates and disinfection byproducts.
UV-activated permanganate process for micro-organic pollutant degradation: efficiency, mechanism and influencing factors

Abstract:Ultraviolet-activated permanganate (UV/PM) process is a novel advanced oxidation process (AOP), but its application potential remains to be evaluated. This work investigates the degradation of refractory organic pollutant by UV/PM in terms of efficiency, mechanism, and influencing factors. The target compound benzoic acid (BA), which is a micro-organic pollutant and is resistant to PM and UV treatment, can be efficiently degraded by UV/PM. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectra directly supported the formation of hydroxyl radical (HO center dot) and superoxide radical (O-2(center dot-)) from UV photolysis of PM. Competitive kinetics experiments verified that O-2(center dot-) acted as precursor of HO center dot and the good degradation performance of BA was due to the involvement of HO center dot and manganese(V). The rate constants of BA degradation showed a positive linear relationship with PM dosage in the range of 0.5-20 mg center dot L-1, and the degradation process was significantly influenced by solution pH and natural organic matters but insensitive to chloride and bicarbonate at environmentally relevant concentrations. Compared to the typical UV-based AOP UV/hydrogen peroxide, UV/PM is a little inferior, indicating that optimization and enhancement is needed for this process before its possible practical application.

Abstract:Humic acid (HA) in water is the main precursor of disinfection by-products in the chlorination process of drinking water. In this study, an ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) process, in a laboratory-scale system, is successful in the degradation of HA. The results showed that HA was significantly degraded (UV254 removal rate of ~ 89%) and partially mineralized (~ 62.5%) by UV/PS treatment at a PS dose of 0.4 mM, pH of 7.12, and UV irradiation time of 160 min. The trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) was also significantly reduced (THMFP reduction of ~ 85.4%). A strong linear relationship was observed between UV254 and dissolved organic carbon. The removal rate of HA at low pH was better than that at high pH conditions, and the inhibition by Cl− slowed down after an initial increase, and the inhibition was weaker than HCO3−. By analyzing the fluorescence spectrum of two humic-like substances, the fluorescent compounds C1 and C2 in HA were significantly degraded, and the change in C1 and C2 concentration was correlated with the decrease of THMFP. The degradation of different fractions of natural organic matter in real-world water samples indicated that UV/PS has significant potential to decrease HA in water.

Abstract:The degradation of four pharmaceutical compounds (PhACs), ibuprofen (IBU), diphenhydramine (DP), phenazone (PZ), and phenytoin (PHT) was investigated via ultraviolet (UV) photolysis and UV/H(2)O(2) process with a low-pressure (LP) UV lamp. For each PhAC tested, direct photolysis quantum yields at 254 nm were found to be ranging from 6.32 x 10(-2) to 2.79 x 10(-1)molE(-1) at pH 7. The second-order rate constants of the reaction between the PhACs and OH were determined to be from 4.86 x 10(9) to 6.67 x 10(9)M(-1)s(-1) by using a competition kinetic model which utilized para-chlorobenzoic acid (pCBA) as a reference compound. The overall effect of OH radical scavenging from humic acid (HA) and anions HCO(3)(-), NO(3)(-) was measured utilizing R(OH,UV) method through examining the aqueous photodegradation of pCBA as a probe compound. Moreover, these fundamental direct and indirect photolysis parameters were applied in the model prediction for oxidation rate constants of the PhACs in UV/H(2)O(2) process. It was found that the predicted oxidation rate constants approximated the observed ones. The results indicated that the new R(OH,UV) probe compound method was applicable for measuring background OH radical scavenging effects in water treatment process of UV/H(2)O(2). Furthermore, by GC-MS analysis, most of the intermediates created during the photodegradation of the selected PhACs in UV/H(2)O(2) process were identified. For the photodegradation of PZ, a competition mechanism existed between the direct UV photolysis and the oxidation of OH. An appropriate dosage of H(2)O(2) could hinder the occurrence of the direct photolysis.

Abstract:The existence of natural organic matter (NOM) causes many problems in drinking water treatment processes. The degradation of different fractions of NOM in drinking water was studied using the ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) process. The NOM was separated into hydrophobic (HPO), transition hydrophilic (TPI) and hydrophilic (HPI) fractions by reverse osmosis and XAD series resins. The effects of degradation were evaluated by dissolved organic carbon (DOC), UV254, three-dimensional fluorescence-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC), and trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP). The results showed that UV/PS process could remove the three fractions of DOC, UV254, as well as the fluorescent components humic acid-like (C1 and C2) and protein-like (C3). The maximum removal rates of DOC of HPO, TPI, and HPI fractions were 34.6%, 38.4%, and 73.9%, respectively, and the maximum removal rates of UV254 were 72.1%, 86.3%, and 86.8%, respectively. The removal rate of the three fluorescent components can reach 100%, and C3 is easier to remove than C1 and C2 under the low PS dosage conditions. The order of kinetic degradation rate constant of UV254 first-order reaction is HPI > TPI > HPO. The optimum pH conditions for the degradation of HPO, TPI, and HPI fractions were acidic, basic, and neutral, respectively. The specific THMFP of HPO was higher than that of TPI and HPI. The specific THMFP of HPO and TPI fractions increased with the increase of radiation time, while the HPI fraction showed the opposite trend. THMFP has different degrees of correlation with DOC, UV254, C1, and C2. This study can provide a theoretical basis for the selection of the UV/PS process for drinking water sources containing NOM with different characteristics.

Abstract:Natural organic matter (NOM), commonly found in surface and ground waters, form disinfection by-products in drinking water. Generally, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) featuring hydrogen peroxide are used to treat water; however, sulfate radical recently has been used to treat recalcitrant organics, because it is associated with a higher oxidation potential and more effective removal than hydroxyl radicals. Hence, in this research, we evaluated persulfate oxidation efficiency in terms of reductions in humic substance levels and investigated the degradation mechanism. The results showed that ultraviolet-activated persulfate effectively treated humic substances compared with hydrogen peroxide and direct irradiation. Treatment was dose and wavelength dependent; higher persulfate concentrations or shorter UV wavelengths were more effective for treating humic substances as high concentration sulfate radicals were created. The degradation mechanism was similar to that of hydrogen peroxide. Aromatic and chromophore components were more susceptible to degradation than were lower molecular weight components, being initially decomposed into the latter, reducing UV254 absorbance and the SUVA254. Lower molecular weight materials were eventually degraded to end products: NPOC levels fell. And we also treated the inflow of a drinking water treatment plant with persulfate, and humic substances were effectively removed.

Abstract:In this study,we focused on the distribution characteristics of PAHs among humic acid,tulvic acid and humin at different aging time.Furthermore,sodium persuffate,potassium permanganate,Fenton and hydrogen peroxide were chosen as oxidants and the distribution and oxidative degradation efficiencies of PAHs in humus acid components and supernatant in the process of oxidation were explored.Results from batch experiments showed that the adsorption of humic had distinct hysteresis with a lower sorption rate and capacity at the early stage of aging.However,the sorption capacity became higher at later stage,so there were no significant differences among the three components.Compare to the low and medium rings PAHs,the high rings had a lower sorption rate and capacity.Sodium persulfate and potassium permanganate obtained better oxidation efficiencies of PAHs around 95％,but the efficiencies of Fenton were in the range of 79.36％～ 88.05％.The removal effects of humic acid and humin were 82.82％ and 61.77％,respectively,while the removal of PAHs in fulvic acid was the lowest (43.96％).In summary,sodium persulfate and potassium permanganate were both optimum for the remediation of PAHs contaminated site,which could improve the removal of PAHs in various components in humus acid.
Effect of UV wavelength on humic acid degradation and disinfection by-product formation during the UV/chlorine process

Abstract:The efficiency of the ultraviolet (UV)/chlorine process strongly depends on UV wavelength because chlorine photolysis and its subsequent radical formation are highly wavelength-dependent. This study compared the degradation of humic acid (HA) during the UV/chlorine process by low pressure mercury lamp (LPUV, 254 nm) and ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED, 275 and 310 nm). The results indicated that HA degradation followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the fluence-based degradation rate constants (kobs) were significantly affected by UV wavelength and solution pH. HA degradation decreased greatly with increasing solution pH during the UV/chlorine process at 254 nm, while the opposite trend was observed at 275 and 310 nm. In the meantime, kobs decreased in the order of 275 nm > 254 nm > 310 nm at pH > 7.0. The changes of chlorine molar absorption coefficients at different UV wavelengths resulted in the variation of chlorine photodecay rates (kobs, chlorine), and the synergistic effects of kobs, chlorine and chlorine quantum yields (Φchlorine) affected HA reduction. The formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during the UV/chlorine process was also evaluated. A significant suppression on DBP formation and DBP-associated calculated theoretical cytotoxicity were observed at 275 nm high UV fluence and alkaline pHs. These findings in this study demonstrate that UV wavelength at 275 nm is more suitable for HA degradation by the UV/chlorine advanced oxidation process in practical applications.
Degradation of UV328 by ozone/peroxymonosulfate system: Performance and mechanisms

Abstract:2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4,6-di-tert-pentylphenol (UV328) is an emerging persistent organic pollutant ubiquitously found in environmental matrices. Though some advanced oxidation processes have been tested to degrade UV328 in waste streams, the degradation mechanisms are largely unknown. In this study, the degradation of UV328 by ozone (O3) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was systemically investigated. At neutral pH, 97.0% UV328 was removed in 5 min with 6.4 mg/min O3 and 2 mM PMS, and the degradation rate was positively correlated with the concentration of oxidants. Hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4•-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) participated in the degradation of UV328, in which 1O2 played a key role. Based on the identified transformation intermediates and density functional theory simulations, three degradation pathways of dehydrogenation, cycloaddition and hydroxylation were proposed. •OH and SO4•- radicals could attack UV328 through hydrogen atom abstraction channel. 1O2-mediated cycloaddition reaction is favorable, and •OH could react with UV328 via radical adduct formation pathway. Toxicity assessment indicated that O3/PMS treatment mitigated the ecological risks of UV328.
Degradation of refractory organic matter in MBR effluent from treating landfill leachate by UV/PMS and UV/H2O2: a comparative study

Abstract:This study applied ultraviolet/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) and UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H 2 O 2 ) processes to the advanced treatment of membrane bioreactor (MBR) effluent. The degradation efficiency of refractory organic matter and the reaction mechanisms of the two processes were systematically investigated. The results showed that the degradation efficiency of the UV/PMS processes was significantly lower than that of the UV/H 2 O 2 process when the PMS concentration was significantly lower than the H 2 O 2 concentration, e.g. the UV 254 removals under optimal conditions were 72.92% and 82.21%, respectively. Additionally, the UV/PMS process could operate over a broader pH range. The degradation efficiency of the UV/PMS process was slightly increased by HCO 3 – and Cl - due to the activation of PMS, while in the UV/H 2 O 2 process, HCO 3 - and Cl - depressed the degradation efficiency by competing with organic matter to react with reactive oxygen species (ROS). After the two processes, the aromaticity, humification, condensation degree, and molecular weight of refractory organic matter in the MBR effluent were considerably decreased. Fulvic- (HA) and humic-like substances (FA) were greatly degraded by the two processes. The UV/PMS had a superior degradation efficiency for macromolecular HA in the early stage of the reaction, and the UV/H 2 O 2 could degrade HA to protein-like substances in the latter stage of the reaction. These differences between the two processes could be attributed to the dominance of different ROS, with SO 4 •- and HO • dominating in the UV/PMS, and HO • dominating in the UV/H 2 O 2 . Abstract:In this study, we compared the decontamination kinetics of various target compounds and the oxidation by-products (bromate and chlorate) of PMS, PDS, and H2O2 under UV irradiation (UV/PMS, UV/PDS, UV/H2O2). Probes of different reactivity with hydroxyl and sulfate radicals, such as benzoic acid (BA), nitrobenzene (NB), and trichloromethane (TCM), were selected to compare the decontamination efficiency of the three oxidation systems. Experiments were performed under acidic, neutral, and alkaline pH conditions to obtain a full-scale comparison of UV/peroxides. Furthermore, the decontamination efficiency was also compared in the presence of common radical scavengers in water bodies [bicarbonate, carbonate, and natural organic matter (NOM)]. Finally, the formation of oxidation by-products, bromate, and chlorate, was also monitored in comparison in pure water and tap water. Results showed that UV/H2O2 showed higher decontamination efficiency than UV/PDS and UV/PMS for BA degradation while UV/H2O2 and UV/PMS showed better decontamination performance than UV/PDS for NB degradation under acidic and neutral conditions. UV/PMS was the most efficient among the three processes for BA and NB degradation under alkaline conditions, while UV/PDS was the most efficient for TCM degradation under all pH conditions. In pure water, both bromate and chlorate were formed in UV/PDS, small amounts of bromate and rare chlorate were observed in UV/PMS, and no detectable bromate and chlorate were formed in UV/H2O2. In tap water, no bromate and chlorate were detectable for all three systems.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of UV/PMS on humic acid (HA) and the influence of PMS dosage, pretreatment time, pH pretreatment, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, and bicarbonate influencing factors on disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation during post-chlorination. With increased PMS dosage or pretreatment time, the UV/PMS treatment significantly reduced ultraviolet absorbance and increased mineralization. It altered the fractional constituent as humic substances were gradually transformed into building blocks and low-molecular-weight acids. However, most DBP formation increased initially and then decreased after subsequent chlorination. Rising nitrate or nitrite concentrations markedly promoted halonitromethane (HNM) formation. The presence of ammonia had a more significant impact on dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) formation. Bicarbonate in UV/PMS pretreatment increased carbonated disinfection byproduct (C-DBP) formation, whereas it had a negligible impact on nitrogenous disinfection byproduct (N-DBP) formation. The present study revealed the impact of a series of influencing factors on DBP formation in UV/PMS reaction systems, providing comprehensive insights on applying UV/PMS in actual practice.

Abstract:Increased usage and discharge of sunscreens have led to ecological safety crisis, and people are developing the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to treat them. The present study aimed to determine the degradation efficiency and mechanism of the sunscreen agent p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) using the UV/Fe2+/persulphate (PS) method. A series of irradiation experiments were conducted to optimise the system conditions and to study the impacts of the natural anion. Free radicals and degradation products were identified in order to clarify the degradation mechanism. Initial PS and Fe2+ concentrations showed significant impacts on PABA degradation. Natural anions, such as Cl−, NO3 −, H2PO4 − and HCO3 −, impeded PABA degradation because of ion (Fe2+) capture, radical scavenging or pH effects. Hydroxyl (HO·) and sulphate (SO4 ·−) radicals were two main radicals observed in the UV/Fe2+/PS system; of these, SO4 ·− showed greater effects on PABA degradation. Over 99 % of the available PABA was completely degraded into carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) by the UV/Fe2+/PS system, and the remaining PABA participated in complex radical reactions. By-products were identified by total ion chromatography and mass spectrometry. Our research provides a treatment process for PABA with high degradation efficiency and environmental safety and introduces a new strategy for sunscreen degradation.

Abstract:In this paper, we have studied the photo-degradation of four disperse dyes by UV irradiation with the addition of 2-hydroxy-4-(methacryloyloxy)acetophenone (HMA), a synthetic photo-sensitizer. We evaluated the degradation efficiency by measuring colour removal and chemical oxygen demand reduction. The effects of initial pH value and temperature were also investigated. The results showed that the UV/HMA method was more efficient in the cleavage of the chromophore group when compared to single UV irradiation. HMA played a crucial role in the photo-degradation process. High pH and temperature are favourable for the degradation of disperse dyes.

Abstract:The influence of coexisting humic acids (HA) or Cu2+ on the photodegradation of pesticides lambda‐cyhalothrin (λ‐CHT) and cypermethrin (CPM) in aqueous solution was studied under xenon lamp irradiation. The removal efficiency of pesticides λ‐CHT and CPM were enhanced in the presence of either Cu2+ or HA but restrained in the presence of both Cu2+ and HA. The photodegradation of λ‐CHT and CPM followed first‐order reaction kinetics. The photodegradation intermediates of λ‐CHT and CPM were determined using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.
