Abstract:The innovation of Alain Badiou’s theory of change, which has attracted a great amount of attention from scholars working in disciplines across humanities, social sciences, and art over the past two decades, cannot be appreciated independently of the account of situations prior to an event’s irruption, namely, the order of being that is conceived using modern set theory in his treatise on general ontology. Retracing the meticulous systematicity with which pre-evental situations are conceived in Being and Event, this paper offers a reconstruction of Badiou’s general ontology that points toward the potential therein for articulating an account of structures and situations that may be qualified as social.
The “Actors” of Modern Society: The Cultural Construction of Social Agency

Abstract:Much social theory takes for granted the core conceit of modern culture, that modern actors—individuals, organizations, nation states—are autochthonous and natural entities, no longer really embedded in culture. Accordingly, while there is much abstract metatheory about “actors” and their “agency,” there is arguably little theory about the topic. This article offers direct arguments about how the modern (European, now global) cultural system constructs the modern actor as an authorized agent for various interests via an ongoing relocation into society of agency originally located in transcendental authority or in natural forces environing the social system. We see this authorized agentic capability as an essential feature of what modern theory and culture call an “actor,” and one that, when analyzed, helps greatly in explaining a number of otherwise anomalous or little analyzed features of modern individuals, organizations, and states. These features include their isomorphism and standardization, their internal decoupling, their extraordinarily complex structuration, and their capacity for prolific collective action.

Abstract:In this article, I take off from some central issues in Paul Katsafanas' recent book Agency and the Foundations of Ethics. I argue that Katsafanas' alleged aims of action fail to do the work he requires them to do. First, his approach to activity or control is deeply problematic in the light of counterexamples. More importantly, the view of activity or control he needs to get his argument going is most likely false, as it requires our values to do work that they are too fickle to do. Second, I take issue with the Nietzschean drive psychology underlying the second agential aim, viz. power. I argue that ordinary desires better describe a number of phenomena that Katsafanas uses drives to explain, and that some actions can aim in the opposite direction. As only drive-motivated actions aim at power, action does not, therefore, constitutively aim at power. Finally, I sketch a Humean approach to constitutivism, and argue that it both explains the desiderata that Katsafanas posits as well as solves the problems for his view. The Humean view is preferable, and should be developed further.

Abstract:Organization concepts and models are increasingly being adopted for the design and specification of multi-agent systems. Agent organizations can be seen as mechanisms of social order, created to achieve global (or organizational) objectives by more or less autonomous agents. In order to develop a theory on the relation between organizational structures, organizational objectives and the actions of agents fulfilling roles in the organization a theoretical framework is needed to describe organizational structures and actions of (groups of) agents. Current logical formalisms focus on specific aspects of organizations (e.g. power, delegation, agent actions, or normative issues) but a framework that integrates and relates different aspects is missing. Given the amount of aspects involved and the subsequent complexity of a formalism encompassing them all, it is difficult to realize. In this paper, a first step is taken to solve this problem. We present a generic formal model that enables to specify and relate the main concepts of an organization (including, activity, structure, environment and others) so that organizations can be analyzed at a high level of abstraction. However, for some aspects we use a simplified model in order to avoid the complexity of combining many different types of (modal) operators.
Towards an ontology of state actors in cyberspace

Abstract:To improve cyber threat analysis practices in cybersecurity, I present a plan to build a formal ontological representation of state actors in cyberspace and of cyber operations. I argue that modelling these phenomena via ontologies allows for coherent integration of data coming from diverse sources, automated reasoning over such data, as well as intelligence extraction and reuse from and of them. Existing ontological tools in cybersecurity can be ameliorated by connecting them to neighboring domains such as law, regulations, governmental institutions, and documents. In this paper, I propose metrics to evaluate currently existing ontological tools to create formal representations in the cybersecurity domain, and I provide a plan to develop and extend them when they are lacking.

Abstract:This manuscript examines the reflexive relationship between social categories and actions proposed by Harvey Sacks. Using video recordings of interactions at a biannual hobbyist wargaming convention, I use ethnomethodological conversation analysis to investigate how individuals ascribe categories and actions to manage solidarity threats. Specifically, I demonstrate how members (re)characterize some action by proposing the category membership of the person seen to have done it and vice versa. Subsequently, I take up how these practices allow members to manage and mitigate threats to affiliation and solidarity. The analysis focuses on actions produced or received as indicating complainables, with their status as 'complaints' being a part of what members negotiate. Ultimately, I argue that this negotiation of categorization and action ascription may point to a potentially omnirelevant and transportable concern for interactants.

Abstract:We develop a general framework for agent abstraction based on the situation calculus and the ConGolog agent programming language. We assume that we have a high-level specification and a low-level specification of the agent, both represented as basic action theories. A refinement mapping specifies how each high-level action is implemented by a low-level ConGolog program and how each high-level fluent can be translated into a low-level formula. We define a notion of sound abstraction between such action theories in terms of the existence of a suitable bisimulation between their respective models. Sound abstractions have many useful properties that ensure that we can reason about the agent's actions (e.g., executability, projection, and planning) at the abstract level, and refine and concretely execute them at the low level. We also characterize the notion of complete abstraction where all actions (including exogenous ones) that the high level thinks can happen can in fact occur at the low level. To facilitate verifying that one has a sound/complete abstraction relative to a mapping, we provide a set of necessary and sufficient conditions. Finally, we identify a set of basic action theory constraints that ensure that for any low-level action sequence, there is a unique high-level action sequence that it refines. This allows us to track/monitor what the low-level agent is doing and describe it in abstract terms (i.e., provide high-level explanations, for instance, to a client or manager).

An Ontological Analysis of Business Process Modeling and Execution

Abstract:This work presents a fully elaborated ontology, defined via the Ontology Web Language (OWL), of the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) standard to define business process models, and we demonstrate that any BPMN model can be serialized as OWL file. Based on ontological analysis and a corresponding definition of a modeling notation as ontology we show that business process models can be transformed from one notation into another one as long as there are common underlying concepts; this is demonstrated with the case of an actor based, or subject-oriented, view on business processes. Furthermore, a reference architecture for Workflow Management Systems (WfMS) based on microservices is discussed which is capable of executing actor based business process models. As a transformation of BPMN models into the actor based view is generally possible, also BPMN models could be enacted. As a result, we can conclude that the actor system is a promising way to stimulate new ways to design workflow management systems and to design business process modeling languages which are more comfortable to use by non-experts without losing necessary expressiveness. Another result is that an ontology is a productive way to define a modeling notation as it can be used as knowledge base, it is a formal conceptualization of the underlying notions, and can be semantically enriched for further use.

Abstract:Humans have two superpowers: reaching desired end-states (goals) and working together (cooperation). We conceptualize these two capabilities as one: collective action control. We discuss ubiquitous processes and (potential) cultural differences in collective action control in the context of two established frameworks—social identity and norms—as well as an emerging attribution of intent perspective. We illustrate collective action control processes by discussing responses to critical feedback during goal pursuit, as exemplified in research on the rejection of intergroup criticism (Intergroup Sensitivity Effect). Established frameworks did not predict the pattern of current empirical observations. We therefore call for developing the attribution of intent account through systematic theory building and research to identify the ubiquitous and culture-specific processes of collective action control.

Abstract:Developing and organizing new knowledge is a core activity for scholars. Recently, ontologies have been introduced as an approach for organizing knowledge. However, most ontologies do not readily support the development and organization of new knowledge. By comparison, to ontology, epistemology is the study of what can be known. Aspects of epistemology include the acquisition of and justification for new knowledge. Thus, we need to coordinate ontology with epistemology. Because we are developing frameworks for capturing knowledge across several scholarly domains, we describe the work in this paper as exploring structured applied epistemology. Unlike other recent proposals for new approaches to scholarly publishing, we propose an integrated and comprehensive approach. We have explored direct representation based on the rigorous Basic Formal Ontology and in this paper, we consider how epistemology can be incorporated with that. In addition to highly-structured scientific research reports, we also consider how to develop highly-structured descriptions of historical events on which historical analyses can be based.

Abstract:Of primary importance in formulating a response to the increasing prevalence and power of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in society are questions of ontology. Questions such as: What "are" these systems? How are they to be regarded? How does an algorithm come to be regarded as an agent? We discuss three factors which hinder discussion and obscure attempts to form a clear ontology of AI: (1) the various and evolving definitions of AI, (2) the tendency for pre-existing technologies to be assimilated and regarded as "normal," and (3) the tendency of human beings to anthropomorphize. This list is not intended as exhaustive, nor is it seen to preclude entirely a clear ontology, however, these challenges are a necessary set of topics for consideration. Each of these factors is seen to present a 'moving target' for discussion, which poses a challenge for both technical specialists and non-practitioners of AI systems development (e.g., philosophers and theologians) to speak meaningfully given that the corpus of AI structures and capabilities evolves at a rapid pace. Finally, we present avenues for moving forward, including opportunities for collaborative synthesis for scholars in philosophy and science.

Abstract:We examine the evidence for the claim of an ‘ontological turn’ in science and technology studies (STS). Despite an increase in references to ‘ontology’ in STS since 1989, we show that there has not so much been an ontological turn as multiple discussions deploying the language of ontology, consisting of many small movements that have changed the landscape within STS and beyond. These movements do not point to a shared STS-wide understanding of ontology, although it can be seen that they do open up STS to neighbouring disciplines. Three main thematic complexes are identified in this literature: constructivism and realism; instruments and classification; and the social sciences and the humanities. The introduction of ontology into the long-running constructivism-realism debate can be considered as an acknowledgement on both sides that objects are real (i.e. pre-existing the situation) and constructed at the same time. The second thematic complex focuses on the role of instruments and classification in establishing not only relations of heterogeneity, but also of stability. The third thematic complex broadens the debate and actively seeks to promote an STS-driven ontological turn for research concerned with the humanities and the social sciences more generally. This study is based on both quantitative and qualitative interpretations of the literature.

Abstract:The enormous growth of the complexity of modern computer systems leads to an increasing demand for techniques that support the comprehensibility of systems. This has motivated the very active research field of formal methods that enhance the understanding of why systems behave the way they do. One important line of research within the verification community relies on formal notions that measure the degree of responsibility of different actors. In this paper, we first provide a uniform presentation of recent work on responsibility notions based on Shapley values for reactive systems modeled by transition systems and considering safety properties. The paper then discusses how to use these formal responsibility notions and corresponding algorithms for three different types of actor sets: the module-based notion serves to reason about the impact of system components on the satisfaction or violation of a safety property. Responsibility values for value-based actor sets and action-based actors allow for the identification of program instructions and control points that have the most influence on a specification violation. Beyond the theoretical considerations, this paper reports on experimental results that provide initial insights into applicability and scalability.

Abstract:The Actor model is a mathematical theory that treats "Actors" as the universal primitives of concurrent digital computation. The model has been used both as a framework for a theoretical understanding of concurrency, and as the theoretical basis for several practical implementations of concurrent systems. Unlike previous models of computation, the Actor model was inspired by physical laws. It was also influenced by the programming languages Lisp, Simula 67 and Smalltalk-72, as well as ideas for Petri Nets, capability-based systems and packet switching. The advent of massive concurrency through client-cloud computing and many-core computer architectures has galvanized interest in the Actor model. Actor technology will see significant application for integrating all kinds of digital information for individuals, groups, and organizations so their information usefully links together. Information integration needs to make use of the following information system principles: * Persistence. Information is collected and indexed. * Concurrency: Work proceeds interactively and concurrently, overlapping in time. * Quasi-commutativity: Information can be used regardless of whether it initiates new work or become relevant to ongoing work. * Sponsorship: Sponsors provide resources for computation, i.e., processing, storage, and communications. * Pluralism: Information is heterogeneous, overlapping and often inconsistent. * Provenance: The provenance of information is carefully tracked and recorded The Actor Model is intended to provide a foundation for inconsistency robust information integration

Abstract:This article is dedicated to one of the key problems of social philosophy – the phenomenon of human alienation. The subject of this research is the ontological grounds of alienation. The goal consists in determination of the existential foundation of alienation as a complicated socio-ontological phenomenon, as well as differentiation of the narrow and broad sense of the concept of “alienation”. In the narrow sense, alienation implies the process, when the products of human activity and activity itself obtain the status of autonomous agents opposing to human. In a broad sense, alienation is interpreted as an ontological distinction within the structure of being. For revealing the ontological grounds of alienation, the author attracts and reconsiders the ideological arsenal of philosophical anthropology, fundamental ontology, existentialism, personalism, Marxism, and post-phenomenology. The ontological interpretation allows comprehending the anthropogenesis, historical development of human, and evolution of human mind in the context of the terms of alienation. Thus, the first is interpreted as a self-alienation of the world; the second – as alienation of human from himself; and the third – as an ideal of appeal of the world towards itself, realized through human spiritual activity. All elements of the triad form an ontological basis doe alienation in the narrow sense.
Interactionist role theory meets ontological security studies: an exploration of synergies between socio-psychological approaches to the study of international relations

Abstract:This article argues that interactionist role theory holds much potential for complementing the ontological security literature in the field of International Relations. Concretely, the article argues that an interactionist role theory perspective promises to supplement the ontological security literature in at least two significant respects. First, it allows for a better understanding of how an international actor’s (capacity to provide) ontological security is tied to its ability to realize its ‘self’ in society through the making and playing of roles (and the subsequent casting of others). Second, it emphasizes how reflective intelligence enables an international actor to address destabilizing disconnects between its ‘self’-image and societal role-play, and to develop a measure of ontological resilience (a capacity to constructively engage with – and to recover from – ontological security challenges). To illustrate this argument, the article provides a case study, which explores, from an interactionist role theory perspective, how the European Union’s ontological security has been strengthened, challenged and restored in its interaction with its Southern and Eastern Neighbourhood.

Abstract:The study of the interactions among intentional agents, with rationality being the main source of intentional behavior, requires mathematical tools capable of capturing systemic effects. Here, we choose an alternative toolbox based on Category Theory. We examine potential level-agnostic formalisms, presenting three categories: PR, G, and an encompassing one, I. The latter allows for representing dynamic rearrangements of the interactions among different agents. Systems represented in I capture the dynamic interactions among the interfaces of their sub-agents, changing the connections among them based on their internal states. We illustrate the expressive power of this formalism in four different instances, providing practitioners with a toolbox for representing cases of interest and facilitating their modular analysis.

Abstract:A formalism for reasoning about actions is proposed that is based on a temporal logic. It allows a much wider range of actions to be described than with previous approaches such as the situation calculus. This formalism is then used to characterize the different types of events, processes, actions, and properties that can be described in simple English sentences. In addressing this problem, we consider actions that involve non-activity as well as actions that can only be defined in terms of the beliefs and intentions of the actors. Finally, a framework for planning in a dynamic world with external events and multiple agents is suggested.
