Abstract:Composite arch-wire (CoAW) is an arch wire formed by solder connection of nickel titanium shape memory alloy and stainless steel wire. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the biocompatibility of CoAW as an important foundation for its clinical application. The electrochemical corrosion and ion release behavior of CoAW upon immersion in solutions simulating oral cavity conditions were measured to evaluate the corrosion behavior of CoAW. Murine L-929 cells were co-cultured with CoAW extract to evaluate the cytotoxicity of the corrosion products in vitro. Polarization tests indicated that CoAW is resistant to corrosion in the tested artificial saliva (AS)-based solutions (chloric solution, simple AS, fluorinated AS, and protein-containing AS), and the amount of toxic copper ions released after immersion was lower than average daily dietary intake levels. The cytotoxicity experiments demonstrated the in vitro biocompatibility of CoAW. Based on the combined advantages of its base materials CoAW, with its resistance to biocorrosion and in vitro cytocompatibility, is a promising alternative material for use in orthodontic fixation applications.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the influence of fluoride and an acidic environment on the mechanical properties of NiTi orthodontic wires (NiTiW) in artificial saliva. DESIGN A prospective laboratory investigation. SETTING Department of Stomatology, First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. MATERIALS AND METHODS Commercial, round 0.016-inch NiTiW were immersed in 0% or 0.05% Natrium-Fluoride-containing artificial saliva at a pH of 4 or 6 for one or three days, respectively. NiTiW were examined with a three-point bending test, Vickers' microhardness tests and surface morphology observation (SEM). RESULTS A pH of 4 increased microhardness and decreased the three-point bending strength significantly (P≤0.05), whereas immersion time and fluoride concentration had no significant influence on the microhardness or on the three-point bending strength (P>0.05). When examining the test group NiTiWs after three days of immersion at a pH of 4 the SEM revealed a rough surface morphology, a damaged oxide layer and signs of corrosion. CONCLUSIONS The most influential factor for decreasing the unloading force and increasing the hardness seems to be the pH value, whereas immersion time and NaF addition do not have a major influence.

Abstract:The corrosion resistance and antibacterial properties of fixed orthodontic devices are insufficient in the complex oral cavity, which delays tooth movement and causes enamel demineralization. To overcome the challenges, this research constructs a series of polydopamine-graphene oxide (PDA-GO) nanocoatings on representative NiTi archwires via self-assembly. The morphology, chemical structure, and multifunctional properties of coatings showed tunability dependent on the PDA/GO ratio. Optimized PDA-GO coatings with uniform and dense characteristics prolonged the diffusion path for the corrosive medium and reduced Ni dissolution in NiTi alloys. Meanwhile, the applied coatings endowed NiTi alloys with antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans due to the surface structures and inherent properties of PDA-GO. In vitro cytotoxicity tests further verified their good biocompatibility. This bio-inspired nanocomposite coating provides a practical reference for modification of dental metal surfaces to better behave in the intraoral environment.

Abstract:There is a very complicated electrolytical environment in oral cavity with plenty of microorganisms existing there. Various forms of corrosion would develop when metallic prosthesis functions in mouth. One important corrosive form is microbial corrosion. The metabolic products, including organic acid and inorganic acid, will affect the pH of the surface or interface of metallic prosthesis and make a change in composition of the medium, thus influencing the electron-chemical reaction and promoting the development of corrosion. The problem of develpoment of microbial corrosion on dental alloy in the oral environment lies in the primary condition that the bacteria adhere to the surface of alloy and form a relatively independent environment that promotes corrosion.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: (1) To evaluate the corrosion resistance of four different orthodontic archwires and to determine the effect of 0.5% NaF (simulating high fluoride-containing toothpaste of about 2250 ppm) on corrosion resistance of these archwires. (2) To assess whether surface roughness (Ra) is the primary factor influencing the corrosion resistance of these archwires.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four different archwires (stainless steel [SS], nickel-titanium [NiTi], titanium molybdenum alloy [TMA], and ion-implanted TMA) were considered for this study. Surface characteristics were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Linear polarization test, a fast electrochemical technique, was used to evaluate the corrosion resistance, in terms of polarization resistance of four different archwires in artificial saliva with NaF concentrations of 0% and 0.5%. Statistical analysis was performed by one-way analysis of variance.RESULTS: The potentiostatic study reveals that the corrosion resistance of low-friction TMA (L-TMA) > TMA > NiTi > SS. AFM analysis showed the surface Ra of TMA > NiTi > L-TMA > SS. This indicates that the chemical composition of the wire is the primary influential factor to have high corrosion resistance and surface Ra is only secondary. The corrosion resistance of all wires had reduced significantly in 0.5% acidic fluoride-containing artificial saliva due to formation of fluoride complex compound.CONCLUSION: The presence of 0.5% NaF in artificial saliva was detrimental to the corrosion resistance of the orthodontic archwires. Therefore, complete removal of residual high-fluorinated toothpastes from the crevice between archwire and bracket during tooth brushing is mandatory.

Abstract:The arch wire (AW) plays an important role in providing continuous force, aligning the teeth, and excellent dental arch stability for orthodontic treatment. However, the high friction performance of the AW surface can increase bacterial adhesion and colonization, leading to oral hygiene problems. Herein, a simple method is developed to modify the surface of the orthodontic wire with a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel coating, which can improve the lubricity and antibacterial adhesion of the AW and prevent the oral hygiene problems caused by itself. The PVA hydrogel coating can toughly adhere to the surface of the AW and remarkably reduce the friction performance of the AW, and then its friction coefficient in water can reach 0.005. Under the action of brushing and bending, the PVA hydrogel coating possesses superior ultralubrication and hardly affects the mechanical properties of the stainless-steel substrate. Moreover, the PVA hydrogel coating can significantly inhibit bacterial adhesion on the surface of the AW, thereby reducing bacterial colonization and maintaining oral hygiene while correcting the shape of the mouth and jaw. Therefore, the PVA hydrogel coating exhibits tough adhesion and good antibacterial adhesion while maintaining the mechanical properties of the AW, and it is a promising antifouling coating for improving the performance of the AW.

Abstract:The pitting corrosion of orthodontic apparatus elements in the oral environment is an interest of both clinicians and scientists dealing with the assessment of the biocompatibility of medical materials. This work presents a study on the effect of ready-to-use Listerine® and Meridol® mouthwashes and sodium fluoride on the resistance of the commercial Remanium®-type orthodontic archwire to pitting corrosion in artificial saliva at 37 °C. XRD, SEM, EDS, mechanical properties, and microhardness measurements were used to characterize the archwire. The in vitro corrosion resistance of the archwire was examined using the open-circuit potential method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and anodic polarization curves. The physicochemical characteristics confirmed the presence of a bi-phase alloy with a mixed austenite/ferrite structure containing Fe 74.4(7) at.%, Cr 18.4(4) at.%, and Ni 7.2(4) at.%. The Fe–Cr–Ni alloy was characterized by high tensile strength and Vickers microhardness. EIS revealed the capacitive behavior with high corrosion resistance. It was found that the kinetics of pitting corrosion in the artificial saliva decreased in the presence of NaF and mouthwashes. The potentiodynamic characteristics confirmed the decrease in susceptibility to pitting corrosion after the modification of artificial saliva. The pitting corrosion mechanism of the self-passive oxide layer on the surface of the Fe–Cr–Ni electrode in the biological environment containing chloride ions was discussed in detail. Mechanical properties after corrosion tests were weakened.

Abstract:Although orthodontic archwires are made from biomedical materials with vast potential for applications worldwide, great challenges, including the adhesion of cariogenic bacteria, the release of nickel ions, and the weakness of mechanical strength, remain and affect their biocompatibility and service life. Herein, a bioinspired superhydrophobic nickel–titanium alloy archwire is reported that displays multifunctional properties of antibacteria adhesion, antinickel release, and corrosion resistance. Compared with commercially purchased archwires, these performances on superhydrophobic archwires can be significantly elevated by varying the contact mode between archwires and the bacterial suspension from surface contact to point contact. Thus, this bioinspired superhydrophobic design has the potential to be applied in other dental devices and provides new ideas for developing novel multifunctional biomaterials.
Synergistic Effect of Wire Bending and Salivary Ph on Surface Properties and Mechanical Properties of Orthodontic Stainless Steel Archwires

Abstract:Background The aim of this study was to investigate the corrosive behaviour of stainless steel archwires in a more clinically relevant way by bending and exposing to various pH. Methods One hundred and twenty pieces of rectangular stainless steel wires (0.43 × 0.64 mm) were randomly assigned into four groups. In each group, there were 15 pieces of bent wires and 15 straight ones. Prior to measurements of the wires, as individual experimental groups (group 1, 2, and 3), the wires were exposed to artificial saliva for 4 weeks at pH 5.6, 6.6, and 7.6, respectively. A control group of wires (group 4) remained in air for the same period of time before sent for measurements. Surface roughness (Ra-value) was measured by a profilometer. Young’s modulus and maximum force were determined by a four-point flexural test apparatus. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the surface morphology of straight wire. Differences between groups were examined using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results Mean surface roughness values, flexural Young’s moduli, and maximum force values of bent wires are significantly different from those of the straight wires, which was the main effect of wire bending, ignoring the influence of pH. A significant effect was found between Ra-values regarding the main effect of pH, ignoring the influence of shape. There was a significant interaction effect of bending and pH on flexural Young’s moduli of stainless steel archwires, while pH did not show much impact on the maximum force values of those stainless steel wires. Bigger surface irregularities were seen on SEM images of straight wires immersed in artificial saliva at pH 5.6 compared to artificial saliva at other pH values. Surface depth (Rz) was more sensitive than Ra in revealing surface roughness, both measured from 3D reconstructed SEM images. Ra showed a comparable result of surface roughness to Ra-value measured by the profilometer. Conclusions Bending has a significant influence on surface roughness and mechanical properties of rectangular SS archwires. pH plays a synergistic effect on the change of mechanical properties of stainless steel (SS) wires along with wire bending.

Abstract:Introduction This study aimed to investigate the surface free energy and surface roughness (SR) of metallic alloys under the influence of acid solutions. Methods The experiment involved the use of 270 rectangular wire samples measuring 0.019 × 0.025-in. These samples were sourced from 3 different commercial brands: Dentsply GAC, American Orthodontics, and Orthoclassic. This in vitro study categorized the samples into 3 groups based on the solutions employed: deionized water, citric acid, and phosphoric acid. Each group consisted of 90 samples, with 30 samples representing each type of alloy—stainless steel, nickel-titanium, and titanium molybdenum alloy (TMA). The wire segments were immersed in their respective solutions for 72 hours at a controlled temperature of 37°C, with continuous orbital agitation at 130 rpm. After the immersion period, the study analyzed both surface free energy and SR. The mean values obtained were subjected to an analysis of variance at a significance level of 5%. Results All alloys displayed hydrophobic behavior, as indicated by interaction free energy values <0. In acidic environments (phosphoric acid and citric acid), significant differences were observed among different brands and alloys, affecting surface energy and interaction free energy. Variations in SR among metallic alloys included steel with the lowest SR variations, followed by nickel-titanium and TMA. Notably, the TMA alloy stood out with significantly higher surface energy compared with that of the other alloys ( P <0.001). Conclusions In this study, all examined alloys demonstrated a hydrophobic nature, suggesting a limited attraction to water. Notably, TMA exhibited the least hydrophobic behavior among the alloys studied. However, when exposed to citric acid, TMA displayed the most substantial alterations in its surface properties. These results underscored the significance of accounting for the distinctive properties of each alloy and their responses to diverse challenges, such as exposure to acidic solutions, during the selection of orthodontic wires for orthodontics treatment.

Abstract:Surface coating technology is an important way to improve the properties of orthodontic appliances, allowing for reduced friction, antibacterial properties, and enhanced corrosion resistance. It improves treatment efficiency, reduces side effects, and increases the safety and durability of orthodontic appliances. Existing functional coatings are prepared with suitable additional layers on the surface of the substrate to achieve the abovementioned modifications, and commonly used materials mainly include metal and metallic compound materials, carbon-based materials, polymers, and bioactive materials. In addition to single-use materials, metal-metal or metal-nonmetal materials can be combined. Methods of coating preparation include, but are not limited to, physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical deposition, sol-gel dip coating, etc., with a variety of different conditions for preparing the coatings. In the reviewed studies, a wide variety of surface coatings were found to be effective. However, the present coating materials have not yet achieved a perfect combination of these three functions, and their safety and durability need further verification. This paper reviews and summarizes the effectiveness, advantages and disadvantages, and clinical perspectives of different coating materials for orthodontic appliances in terms of friction reduction, antibacterial properties, and enhanced corrosion resistance, and discusses more possibilities for follow-up studies as well as for clinical applications in detail.
Evaluation of surface roughness, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial effects of silver nanoparticle coating on copper nickel titanium orthodontic arch wires - in vitro study

Abstract:Background: Surface roughness of arch wires directly impacts their corrosion behavior, friction resistance, and plaque accumulation, which may hinder tooth movement and lead to dental caries. Objectives: The study aims to synthesize vanillin-mediated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), characterize them, assess surface roughness and cytotoxicity of arch wires after silver nanoparticle coating, and test their antibacterial properties. Materials and methods: Nine copper-nickel-titanium arch wires (CuNiTi) were cut into equal pieces. Three were sent for surface roughness assessment, three for cytotoxicity, and three for antibacterial testing. Dip coating of wires was done using the sol-gel thin film method. The surface roughness (Ra) before and after coating was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Cytotoxicity testing was done with a (3- (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay using gingival fibroblasts. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS software. Antibacterial activity against S. mutans was tested using the Agar-well diffusion method. Results: The CuNiTi wires were coated successfully, and the coating appeared homogeneous. The mean Ra after coating (297.3+/- 30.4 nm) was significantly less than that before coating (339.7+/-49.2 nm). AgNPs showed minimal cytotoxicity against human gingival fibroblasts at different concentrations. Optical microscopy showed over 90% viability between 12.5 and 100 µg/ml. At 100 µg/ml, only 80% of cells remained viable. AgNP coating is biocompatible at concentrations up to 75 µg/ml. There was a significant intergroup difference in the zone of inhibition (antibacterial activity) noted with higher values in noncoated wires. (P value <0.007). Conclusion: AgNPs coated on CuNiTi arch wires showed reduced surface roughness and minimal cytotoxic effects on human gingival cells and good antibacterial activity against S. mutans compared to noncoated arch wires.

Abstract:The fluorinated treatment coating (MgF2), polylactic acid (PLA) coating, and composite coating (MgF2/PLA) were prepared on biodegradable Mg-2.2Zn-0.3Ca alloy wires to improve the corrosion properties. The composition characteristics and microstructure of the samples were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The corrosion resistance of all samples were investigated by immersion tests and electrochemical techniques in vitro simulated body fluid (SBF). The results indicated single MgF2 and PLA coating performed opposite protective behaviors in the short and long term immersion tests. The corrosion rate of MgF2-coated samples was lower than that of PLA-coated samples, but the corrosion fracture lifetime of MgF2-coated samples was shorter than that of PLA-coated samples. The MgF2/PLA composite coating exhibited superior short and long term protective effect for Mg wires. These results exhibit that single MgF2 or PLA coating cannot behave strong anti-corrosion ability, only the MgF2/PLA-coated Mg-2.2Zn-0.3Ca alloy wires has high corrosion resistance in vitro immersion, and it has promising potential for surgical implant applications.

Abstract:This study investigates the release of metal ions from commonly used orthodontic archwires, specifically, stainless steel (SS), nickel–titanium (NiTi), chromium–cobalt (CrCo), and titanium–molybdenum (TMA) alloys. To simulate oral conditions, each type of wire was immersed in artificial saliva at body temperature for a four-week period. Ion release levels were analyzed through ICP-OES mass spectrometry. The findings indicate that NiTi and CrCo wires released significantly higher amounts of nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr) ions compared to SS wires. Abstract:PURPOSE:To study the effect of carbon-silica composite films on corrosion resistance of Co-Cr alloy in simulated oral environment and provide evidences for clinical application of this new material. METHODS:Co-Cr alloy specimens were cut into appropriate size of 20 mm × 20 mm × 0.5 mm. Then, the carbon-silica composite films were spin-coated onto the specimens. Subsequently, ICP-AES was used to observe the Co, Cr, Mo ion concentrations. Finally, Tafel polarization curves of the specimens were used to measure the electrochemical corrosion resistance by electrochemical workstation. SAS8.0 software package was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS:The results of ICP-AES showed that the ion concentrations of Co, Cr, Mo of specimens coated with composite films in the testing liquid were significantly smaller than that of Co-Cr alloy specimens. Tafel polarization curves showed that in the specimens coated with composite films, the corrosion potential moved in the positive direction and increased from -0.261 V to -0.13 V. At the same time, the corrosion current density decreased from -5.0017μA/cm2 to -5.3006 μA/cm2. CONCLUSIONS:Carbon-silica composite films (silica=61.71wt %) can reduce the release of metal ions significantly and improve the corrosion resistance of Co-Cr alloys effectively. Carbon-silica composite films may be a promising dental material.
