Abstract:OBJECTIVE To establish a method for the determination of 20 heavy metals and trace elements in Sargassum pallidum and Sargassum fusiforme and its adulterants by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS), and to determine the distribution of heavy metals and trace elements in Sargassum pallidum and Sargassum fusiforme. METHODS The 3.0 mL nitric acid and 1.0 mL ultrapure water were added into the sample and digested to the microwave digestion procedure and then determined by ICP-MS. The carrier gas was argon, the collision gas was helium, the plasma gas flow rate was 15.0 L·min−1, the carrier gas flow rate was 1.17 L·min−1, the plasma radio frequency power was 1.3 kw, and the creep pump rotation number was 30 r·min−1. Full quantitative analysis model was adopted. RESULTS The 20 heavy metals and trace elements measured had a good linear relationship. The detection limit for each element was of 0.001−1.701 μg·L−1, with the average recovery from 78.6% to 108.2%. As was the highest content of harmful element, Mg, Ca, Fe, Zn, Sr were higher than other elements. CONCLUSION The method is simple, accurate, specialized, repeatable and sensitive, internal standard method can improve the accuracy of measurement results and can be used for the determination of heavy metals and trace elements in Sargassum pallidum and Sargassum fusiforme and its adulterants.

Abstract:This paper reports the determination of three nitrogen states in plants: nitric nitrogen, ammoniacal nitrogen and total nitrogen. The plant sample was digested by the Kjeldathl method with H2SO4 + H2O2. The solution of the sample was determined by three methods: absorption photometric method, indigotic colorimetry, and UV absorption photometric method after K2S2O8 oxidation. By comparing the results, the relationship among the three N states is that the total N = NH4+ + NO3-. Suitable methods were found for the determination of the elements, thus providing a scientific basis for the selection of suitable methods for chemical element analysis in plants.

Abstract:In research of alkaline soil improvement by flue gas desulphurization byproducts,a large amount of soil should be collected and analyzed.It is necessary to find a quick method to provide the main elements content.This paper describes a new method of soil analysis,the sample is pretreated with microwave-aided acid digestion and tested by ICP-AES,the instrument condition and acid applied are also discussed and experimentally optimized.It is a full digestion method and can provide the determination of several elements simultaneously.It uses less acid,less handling time and has a satisfied recovery.

Abstract:A two-step digestion–ultraviolet (UV) spectrophotometry method for total nitrogen (N) determination in solid samples is described in this work. Three influencing factors (amount of hydrogen peroxide, amount of sulfuric acid, and digestion time) of the digestion are optimized, and for digestion of a 0.1-g solid sample, the optimal conditions are 0.5 mL of sulfuric acid, 0.2 mL of hydrogen peroxide, and 40 min of the digestion time. The results of ion chromatography show that under the optimal conditions the organic nitrogen almost quantitatively mineralizes into ammonium in the first digestion. The nitrogen content in six real samples has been analyzed under the optimal conditions, and the nitrogen recovery rates of standard compounds added in the real samples were between 88% and 99%. The results obtained by two-step digestion–UV spectrophotometry method are consistent with those by classical Kjeldahl method (correlation coefficient is 0.9999). The possible degradation pathways of three amino acids were also proposed.

Abstract:BackgroundTraditional medicine mainly of herbal origin is widely used all around the world. Heavy metal contamination in such products is frequently reported. Accumulation of heavy metals in the human body leads to various health hazards. Thus, precise determination for such contaminants is required for safety assurance. Sample preparation is a significant step in spectroscopic analysis to achieve reliable and accurate results. Wet digestion methods are basically used for the dissolution of herbal product samples prior to elemental analysis.MethodsThis study has been designed to evaluate the efficiency of three acid digestion methods using different solvents. Five samples were digested with three different acid digestion methods namely method A (a combination of nitric-perchloric acids HNO3–HClO4 in a ratio 2:1), method B (only nitric acid HNO3), and method C (a mixture of nitric-hydrochloric acids HNO3–HCl in a ratio 1:3), to recommend the most efficient digestion method that gains the highest analyte recovery. The analysis of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) was conducted using various techniques of atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS).ResultsThe statistical analysis revealed that method C which represented the combination of nitric-hydrochloric acids HNO3–HCl in a ratio 1:3 was the most efficient digestion method for herbal product samples as it had given a significant high recovery (p < 0.05) for all metals compared to method A and method B. Accuracy of the proposed method was evaluated by the analysis of standard reference material (SRM) 1515 Apple Leaves from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) which presented good recoveries for all metals ranging from 94.5 to 108 %.ConclusionMethod C provides highest recovery for all the analytes under investigation using AAS in herbal medicine samples.Graphical Abstract:Comparison of different sample prepartion for AAS analysis of herbal samples

Abstract:Soybean coat samples were digested by H2O2-HNO3 solution after semi-ashing in a closed microwave system and the determination of iron,nickel,magnesium,calcium zinc and copper in soybean coat has been performed by MPT-AES.Experimenta1 conditions were optimized and established.The effects of acid concentration and coexisting ions(K,Na,Fe,Ni,Al,Zn,M g,Ca)on determination of iron,nickel,magnesium,calcium zinc and copper were investigated.The results showed that the detection limits of iron,nickel,magnesium,calcium,zinc and copper were 22.94,7.55,0.36,0.92,16.27 and 2.1 ng·mL-1,respectively.The RSD was no more than 3.2%,it showed the adopted method had good precision.The linear ranges of iron,nickel,magnesium,calcium,zinc and copper were 0-12,0-12,0-35,0-32,0-7 and 0-12 μg·mL-1,respectively.The recoveries were 96.8%-101.3%,98.4%-103.7%,95.9%-99.6%,96.3%-103.5%,99.8%-103.5% and 97.6%-105.3%,respectively.Compared with conventional test methods,MPT combined with half ash and microwave digestion samples was efficient with high accuracy and repeatability and applicable to sample analysis.

Abstract:In recent years, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) have been commonly used to determine the soil available K and Na with the extraction solution of HCl-H2SO4, while previous data of soil available K and Na were measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) with the extraction solution of NH4OAc. In order to utilize previous data, quest for the convertibility of the data determined by ICP-AES and FAAS, and compare the data determined by both methods, the authors chose four types of soil to determine soil available K and Na by ICP-AES and FAAS, respectively. Four types of soil represent grit soil, clay, silt from river and silt from sea, respectively. Soil samples included four types of soil and these samples represent different soil nutrition. The authors analyzed the correlations of two kinds of measured data. The paired samples t-test proves that there was significantly positively correlation between these two methods. The correlation coefficient of the data between these two methods for measuring soil available K is 0.98. The results of soil available K determined by the two methods can be conversed through the formula, y = l.14x + 6.53 (R2 = 0.91, n=24, p < 0.001). As for Na, although there is a significantly positively correlation between these two methods, the slopes of single model of clay and grit soil were different from that of general model. And so the results determined by the two methods can be conversed through different formula according to the types of soil, that is, for clay: y = l.23x + 10.03; for grit soil: y = 3.12x - 23.03; for silt: y = 0.60x. In conclusion, the authors' results showed that previous data of available K and Na measured by FAAS with the extraction solution of NH4OAc were available. And these data were comparable to the data measured by ICP-AES through definite formula The authors' results also suggested that ICP-AES was preferable when many elements were measured at the same time. Under this condition, ICP-AES was economical, efficient and reliable.
Determination of protein content in powder food based on organic elemental analysis.

Abstract:Objective To establish a method for determination of protein content in food based on elemental analysis. Methods Protein contents of 16 kinds of powder food were determined by both elemental analysis and Kjeldahl’s method. Results based on two different methods were compared. Results The elemental analysis method could determine the protein content correctly, with good repeatability and accuracy, achieving comparable results to Kjeldahl’s method. The elemental analysis method showed more advantages such as little need of sample amount, simple experimental operation, high detecting efficiency and automaticity. Conclusion The elemental analysis method can be used to replace Kjeldahl’ s method for the determination of protein content in powder food.

Abstract:This study represents the investigation of major and trace elements in two indigenous plants, Cynodon dactylon (L.) and Phragmites australis , grown in the Ghardaia region of Southern Algeria. Using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) technique, the research aimed to ascertain the content of essential and toxic elements in the aerial parts of these plants. Twenty eight elements as (Ag, As, Ba, Br, Ca, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Eu, Fe, Hf, Hg, K, La, Lu, Na, Nd, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sm, Sr, Tb, Th, Yb and Zn) were analysis with INAA method. Given the scarcity of data regarding essential and toxic chemical elements in food within Algeria, the study focused on evaluating the content of these elements in two plant species commonly utilized by Bedouins in traditional medicine and as fodder, as well as by professionals for decontamination and water purification purposes. The concentrations of mineral elements observed in these plants were found to be in proximity to the minimum levels recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The data obtained from this investigation are deemed applicable for Algerian food purposes, offering valuable insights into the elemental composition of these plants and their potential roles in traditional and practical applications.

Determination of Total Selenium in Geological Samples by HG-AFS

Abstract:The samples were digested by aqua regia,and contents of the total selenium were determined by hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry(HG-AFS) with the satisfactory results.Comparing with the digestion method of aqua regia and nitric acid-perchloric acid electric hot plate method,the results showed that the aqua regia digestion method had not only simple operation and short time,but also higher sensitive of total selenium determination than that of nitric acid-perchloric acid electric hot plate method.The method provides a simple-suitable determination method of the contents of total selenium for the vast geological samples.

Abstract:A novel method for multi-element analysis in cereals, pseudocereals, and legumes was developed for principal (calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus) and trace (manganese, zinc, iron, copper, and aluminum) element determination using a microwave plasma-atomic emission spectrometer (MP-AES). The method was validated using certified reference analyte values from durum wheat (DUWF-1), corn bran (BRAN-1), quinoa (KINO-1), rice (SRM 1568b), and soy (SRM 3234). Spike recoveries were assessed using field-grown crops that represent staple and minor crops with variable matrix compositions. A closed-vessel microwave-assisted digestion method consisting of 12 mL of deionized water, 2 mL of HNO3, and 2 mL of H2O2 was efficient for the mineralization of all crops. Acceptable measurement agreement was achieved between certified and determined values for all reference materials with recovery ranges from 89 to 120 percent. Plant breeders can use the method to develop and screen crops for improved nutrient density.
Simultaneous Determination of Mineral Nutrients and Toxic Metals in M. stenopetala from Southern Ethiopia: A Comparative Study of Three Cultivating Areas Using MP-AES

Abstract:In this study, for the first time, the levels of thirteen micro- and macromineral nutrients in the leaves, seeds, and supportive soil of Moringa stenopetala (M. stenopetala) were simultaneously determined using microwave plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (MP-AES). The samples were collected during the arid season, in 2019 from the three main M. stenopetala growing areas in southern Ethiopia (Chano Mile Kebele, Nechisar Kebele, and Konso Special Woreda). A novel digestion method for leaf and seed samples was developed using an optimized acid mixture (2.5 : 0.75 : 0.5 of HNO3, HClO4, and H2O2) at 240°C for 2 hrs and 30 min, resulting in clear and colorless solutions. The method makes the digestion process more efficient by minimizing the reagent volume, reducing digestion temperature and time, and simplifying the overall procedure. The efficiency of the optimized procedure was validated by spiking experiments, and the percentage recovery ranged between 94 and 110%. Under optimized experimental conditions, higher concentrations of essential minerals (K, Na, Ca, and Mg) were observed in the plant leaf and seed samples from the three areas. In addition, significant amounts of trace elements (Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu) were also found. Importantly, no traces of the toxic elements (Cd and Pb) were detected in any of the analyzed samples, suggesting that the leaves and seeds of M. stenopetala are valuable sources of both micro- and macromineral nutrients and are safe from toxic metals. From a dietary perspective, the seed contains almost comparable concentrations of minerals as the leaves. As a result, the seeds of M. stenopetala can serve as an alternative source of minerals and play a role in overcoming the current global food crisis, particularly in the dry season. Analysis of variance at a 95% confidence level revealed significant differences in the levels of all mineral nutrients between the three sample means except K, Ca, Co, and Cu. Generally, the developed method includes an innovative digestion procedure that minimizes reagent consumption, operates at lower temperatures, and requires shorter digestion times, thereby optimizing resource utilization and maintaining analytical accuracy. Notably, the absence of toxic elements in the MP-AES procedure highlights the safety and reliability of M. stenopetala leaves and seeds as valuable, contamination-free sources of essential nutrients.

Determination and Analysis of Metal Elements in Three Kinds of Desert Plants from Inner Mongolia

Abstract:In This paper,the contents of metal elements in three kinds of desert plants Salix bordensis,Elaeagnus angustifolia and Salix psammophila from Inner Mongolia were determined by ICP-AES technique.The recoveries obtained by standard addition method is between 95.1% and 110.3%,and its RSD is lower than 3.4%.The results show that major elements such as Na,K,Mg,Ca,Al and plant vital activities essential trace elements Cu,Fe,Mn,Zn have a different contents orders in these desert plants,and 4 elements contents of Cu,Fe,Mn,Zn are lower than the average contents of other terrestrial plants.

Abstract:The question of trace metal elements (TME) is still relevant and causes several environmental problems. Moreover, the digestion methods of TME have a significant impact on ecosystems. Sample preparation is an important step of any analytical procedure. In fact, defining the levels of TME in vegetal tissues requires various steps: drying samples, crushing, extraction, and dosage. The use of chemical extraction solutions can be put into question. Other than their lack of specificity, they are susceptible to provoking the redistribution and/or re-fixation of a part of the metallic ions between the various vegetal components. Our study aims to test the procedures of extraction that are specific for the metals Cu, Zn, Fe, Ca, Cr and Ba. Our results show an outstanding difference in the levels of TME derived from the same vegetal sample, according to the various techniques of extraction. In fact, cold extraction by nitric acid diluted at 10% is the most efficient way to put the ions of Cu, Zn, Fe and Ca into a solution. Meanwhile, the use of heated extraction using different acid digestion approaches is the most efficient for Cr and Ba solubilization from Atriplex portulacoides, Arthrocnemum indicum, Olea europaea BCR-62, Ulva lactuca and Ulva lactuca BCR-279.

Abstract:Since the conventional combustion methods are not applicable in accurate determination of organic matter content of organic-inorganic complex fertilizers due to their complexity of the components, new methods, Modified Combustion Method and Combustion of Residual after Rinsing, were proposed. These two methods, developed from the conventional combustion method with slight modification, efficiently eliminate the interference of the components of fertilizers. The correlation between the values determined with the new methods and the real values is statistically significant with coefficient (0.9999) and 0.9851. It is suggested that these two methods be used by factories and administrative institutions in monitoring fertilizer quality.

Abstract:The determination of total sulfur (S) in soils and plant tissue samples can be accomplished using a combination of sodium bicarbonate/silver oxide, dry ashing and ion chromatography(IC). The proposed method offers high precision and acceptable accuracy for samples with more than 0.02% S. At the same time this procedure makes use of standard analytical equipment used in other phases of soil, water and plant tissue analysis. Soil sample sizes larger than 0.1g or high total S or barite (BaSO4) may not have acceptable S recoveries due to incomplete S oxidation or dissolution of BaSO4. In order to optimize recoveries of total S in these special soil samples, varying (decreasing) sample sizes is required.

Abstract:Phosphorous (P) is an essential element for plant growth and development, and its scarcity is a severe crop output constraint. Determination of total P in soil and fertilizers is very important in agriculture as the amount of P is related to crop production. Rock phosphate (RP) is an excellent natural source of P widely used for P fertilizer production. The objective of this study was to compare two different digestion methods, microwave digestion and hot plate digestion, and to evaluate the performance of two analytical techniques, inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and colorimetry (UV-VIS), for measuring total P in imported RP samples. The validation of microwave digestion followed by analysis in ICP-MS was performed. Phosphorus has detection and quantification limits of 1 mg L −1 and 5 mg L −1 respectively through ICP-MS analysis. Average P recovery was found 92.12–96.53%. Precision in terms of intra-day (%RSD R = 2.76–5.98 evaluated using ICP-MS) and inter-day (%RSD r = 2.92–6.75) were found to be within the acceptable range (20%), indicating consistency of the proposed method to determine total-P over traditional UV-VIS method. The combination of microwave-assisted digestion and ICP-MS offers superior efficiency in determining both phosphorus (P) and heavy metals, including aluminum, iron, zinc, cadmium, strontium, manganese and chromium, in RP samples. Hence, this method is novel and rapid and is used for the quantification of total P in different RP samples for quality control.

Abstract:It is important to evaluate different digestion methods to accurately determine elemental concentrations in soils. Three commonly used digestion procedures, hotplate aqua regia, microwave aqua regia, and microwave aqua regia + HF, were compared for digestion of three standard reference materials (SRMs 2704, 2709, and 2711) and 20 Florida soils (three groups of Quartzipsammemts, one group of Alaquods, and one group of Paleudults). Sixteen elements (Al, Ba, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, P, Zn, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Se) were analyzed using either an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP‐OES) or a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer (GFAAS). Precise analysis was achieved for all elements except As (1.0–25%), Cd (1.8–22%), and Se (4.1–22%) in the SRMs using all three procedures, with the microwave aqua regia + HF procedure having slightly better precision (3.7%) averaged across all elements. Compared with the elemental recoveries in SRMs by the microwave aqua regia digestion (80%), microwave aqua regia + HF digestion achieved greater accuracy (94%), whereas the hotplate aqua regia digestion achieved less accuracy (74%). In general, the microwave aqua regia + HF digestion was overall the best procedure for determining concentrations of most metals in SRMs and Florida soils, followed by the microwave aqua regia and the hotplate aqua regia digestion. However, this so‐called total–total digestion procedure (microwave aqua regia + HF) may underestimate total Pb concentration in Florida soils and total Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, and Ba concentrations in the Florida Paleudults.
