Abstract:Magnetic Weyl semimetals with broken time-reversal symmetry are expected to generate strong intrinsic anomalous Hall effects, due to their large Berry curvature. Here, we report a magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate, Co3Sn2S2, with a quasi-two-dimensional crystal structure consisting of stacked Kagomé lattices. This lattice provides an excellent platform for hosting exotic topological quantum states. We observe a negative magnetoresistance that is consistent with the chiral anomaly expected from the presence of Weyl nodes close to the Fermi level. The anomalous Hall conductivity is robust against both increased temperature and charge conductivity, which corroborates the intrinsic Berry-curvature mechanism in momentum space. Owing to the low carrier density in this material and the significantly enhanced Berry curvature from its band structure, the anomalous Hall conductivity and the anomalous Hall angle simultaneously reach 1130 Ω-1 cm-1 and 20%, respectively, an order of magnitude larger than typical magnetic systems. Combining the Kagomé-lattice structure and the out-of-plane ferromagnetic order of Co3Sn2S2, we expect that this material is an excellent candidate for observation of the quantum anomalous Hall state in the two-dimensional limit.

Abstract:Both topological crystalline insulators surfaces and graphene host multi-valley massless Dirac fermions which are not pinned to a high-symmetry point of the Brillouin zone. Strain couples to the low-energy electrons as a time-reversal invariant gauge field, leading to the formation of pseudo-Landau levels (PLL). Here we study periodic pseudo-magnetic fields originating from strain superlattices. We study the low-energy Dirac PLL spectrum induced by the strain superlattice and analyze the effect of various polarized states. Through self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations we establish that, due to the strain superlattice and PLL electronic structure, a valley-ordered state spontaneously breaking time-reversal and realizing a quantum Hall phase is favored, while others are suppressed.

Abstract:The appearance of a Hall conductance necessarily requires breaking of time-reversal symmetry, either by an external magnetic field or by the internal magnetization of a material. However, as a second response, Hall dissipationless transverse currents can appear even in time-reversal symmetric conditions in non-centrosymmetric materials. Moreover, this non-linear effect has a quantum origin: it is related to the geometric properties of the electronic wavefunctions and encoded in the dipole moment of the Berry curvature. Here we review the general theory underpinning this effect and discuss various material platforms where non-linear Hall transverse responses have been theoretically proposed and experimentally verified. On the theoretical front, the link between the non-linear Hall effect and the Berry curvature dipole is discussed using Boltzmann transport theory. On the material front, different platforms, including topological crystalline insulators, transition metal dichalcogenides, graphene, and Weyl semimetals are reviewed.

Spontaneous Crystal Thermal Hall Effect in Insulating Altermagnets

Abstract:We show that magnetic insulators with a collinear and compensated order can exhibit a thermal Hall effect even at zero magnetic field if they have altermagnetic symmetries. We predict a finite thermal Hall conductivity vector $\boldsymbol{\kappa}_\text{H}$ for a rutile-inspired effective spin model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Within the linear spin-wave theory, we identify two magnon branches that carry identical Berry curvature and give rise to a finite $\boldsymbol{\kappa}_\text{H}$, which can be controlled by the Néel vector orientation and by strain. The thermal Hall response is further complemented with a spin Nernst response to contrast spin and heat transport in altermagnetic insulators with those in ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. Our results establish the crystal thermal Hall effect of magnons and we discuss material candidates for experimental realization, such as MnF$_2$, CoF$_2$, and NiF$_2$.

Abstract:Ferromagnets generate an anomalous Hall effect even without the presence of a magnetic field, something that conventional antiferromagnets cannot replicate but noncollinear antiferromagnets can. The anomalous Hall effect governed by the resistivity tensor plays a crucial role in determining the presence of time reversal symmetry and the topology present in the system. In this work we reveal the complex origin of the anomalous Hall effect arising in noncollinear antiferromagnets by performing Hall measurements with fields applied in selected directions in space with respect to the crystalline axes. Our coplanar magnetic field geometry goes beyond the conventional perpendicular field geometry used for ferromagnets and allows us to suppress any magnetic dipole contribution. It allows us to map the in-plane anomalous Hall contribution and we demonstrate a 120$^\circ$ symmetry which we find to be governed by the octupole moment at high fields. At low fields we subsequently discover a surprising topological Hall-like signature and, from a combination of theoretical techniques, we show that the spins can be recast into dipole, emergent octupole and noncoplanar effective magnetic moments. These co-existing orders enable magnetization dynamics unachievable in either ferromagnetic or conventional collinear antiferromagnetic materials.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking of Time-Reversal-Symmetry and Time-Crystal States in Chiral Atomic Systems

Abstract:We present a theoretical study of the interaction between an atom characterized by a degenerate ground state and a reciprocal environment, such as a semiconductor nanoparticle, without the presence of external bias. Our analysis reveals that the combined influence of the electron's intrinsic spin magnetic moment on the environment and the chiral atomic dipolar transitions may lead to either the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry or the emergence of time-crystal-like states with remarkably long relaxation times. The different behavior is ruled by the handedness of the precession motion of the atom's spin vector, which is induced by virtual chiral-dipolar transitions. Specifically, when the relative orientation of the precession angular velocity and the electron spin vector is as in a spinning top, the system manifests time-crystal-like states. Conversely, with the opposite relative orientation, the system experiences spontaneous symmetry breaking of time-reversal symmetry. Our findings introduce a novel mechanism for the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry in atomic systems, and unveil an exciting opportunity to engineer a nonreciprocal response at the nanoscale, exclusively driven by the quantum vacuum fluctuations.

Abstract:Superlattice formation dictates the physical properties of many materials, including the nature of the ground state in magnetic materials. Chemical composition is commonly considered to be the primary determinant of superlattice identity, especially in intercalation compounds. Here, we find that, contrary to this conventional wisdom, kinetic control of superlattice growth leads to the coexistence of disparate domains within a compositionally "perfect" single crystal. We demonstrate that Cr$_{1/4}$TaS$_2$ is a bulk noncollinear antiferromagnet in which scattering between bulk and minority superlattice domains engenders complex magnetotransport below the Néel temperature, including an anomalous Hall effect. We characterize the magnetic phases in different domains, image their nanoscale morphology, and propose a mechanism for nucleation and growth. These results provide a blueprint for the deliberate engineering of macroscopic transport responses via microscopic patterning of magnetic exchange interactions in superlattice domains.

Abstract:Spontaneous generation of time-reversal symmetry breaking in unconventional superconductors is currently a topic of considerable interest. While chiral superconducting order is often assumed to be the source of such signatures, they can sometimes also arise from nonmagnetic disorder. Here we perform a theoretical study of the impact of dislocations on the superconducting order parameter within a microscopic one-band model which, in the homogeneous case, features either extended $s$-wave, $d$-wave, or $s+id$-wave superconductivity depending on the electron concentration. We find that the dislocations minimize their impact on the superconducting condensate by inducing localized supercurrents pinned by the dislocations, even well outside the $s+id$ regime. We map out the parameter and density dependence of the induced currents. From these results we conclude that quite generically unconventional superconductors hosting dislocations tend to break time-reversal symmetry locally.

Abstract:Antiferromagnets with non‐collinear spin structures display various properties that make them attractive for spintronic devices. Some of the most interesting examples are an anomalous Hall effect despite negligible magnetization and a spin Hall effect with unusual spin polarization directions. However, these effects can only be observed when the sample is set predominantly into a single antiferromagnetic domain state. This can only be achieved when the compensated spin structure is perturbed and displays weak moments due to spin canting that allows for external domain control. In thin films of cubic non‐collinear antiferromagnets, this imbalance was previously assumed to require tetragonal distortions induced by substrate strain. Here we show that in Mn3SnN and Mn3GaN, spin canting is due to structural symmetry lowering induced by large displacements of the magnetic manganese atoms away from high symmetry positions. These displacements remain hidden in X‐ray diffraction when only probing the lattice metric and require measurement of a large set of scattering vectors to resolve the local atomic positions. In Mn3SnN, the induced net moments enable the observation of the anomalous Hall effect with an unusual temperature dependence, which we conjecture results from a bulk‐like temperature‐dependent coherent spin rotation within the Kagome plane. Spontaneous topological Hall effect induced by non-coplanar antiferromagnetic order in intercalated van der Waals materials

Abstract:In ferromagnets, electric current generally induces transverse Hall voltage in proportion to magnetization (anomalous Hall effect), and it is frequently used for electrical readout of the up and down spin states. While these properties are usually not expected in antiferromagnets, recent theoretical studies predicted that non-coplanar antiferromagnetic order with finite scalar spin chirality (i.e. solid angle spanned by neighboring spins) can often induce large spontaneous Hall effect even without net magnetization or external magnetic field. This phenomenon, i.e. spontaneous topological Hall effect, can potentially be used for the efficient electrical readout of the antiferromagnetic states, but its experimental verification has long been elusive due to the lack of appropriate materials hosting such exotic magnetism. Here, we report the discovery of all-in-all-out type non-coplanar antiferromagnetic order in triangular lattice compounds CoTa3S6 and CoNb3S6, by performing the detailed magnetic structure analysis based on polarized neutron scattering experiments as well as systematic first-principles calculations. These compounds are reported to host unconventionally large spontaneous Hall effect despite their vanishingly small net magnetization, and our analysis revealed that it can be well explained in terms of topological Hall effect, which originates from the fictitious magnetic field associated with scalar spin chirality in non-coplanar antiferromagnetic orders. The present results indicate that the scalar spin chirality mechanism can offer a promising route to realize giant spontaneous Hall response even in compensated antiferromagnets, and highlight intercalated van der Waals magnets as an unique quasi-two-dimensional material platform to enable various nontrivial manner of electrical reading and possible writing of non-coplanar antiferromagnetic domains.

Abstract:Materials with antiferromagnetic order have recently emerged as promising candidates in spintronics based on their beneficial characteristics such as vanishing stray fields and ultra-fast dynamics. At the same time more complex localized non-coplanar magnetic states as for instance skyrmions are in the focus of applications due to their intriguing properties such as the topological Hall effect. Recently a conceptual shift has occurred to envision the use of such magnetic defects not only in one-dimensional race track devices but to exploit their unique properties in two-dimensional networks. Here we use local strain in a collinear antiferromagnet to induce non-coplanar domain wall junctions, which connect in a very specific way to form extended networks. We combine spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy with density functional theory to characterize the different building blocks of the network, and unravel the origin of the handedness of triple-junctions and the size of the arising topological orbital moments.

Abstract:In magnetic crystals, despite the explicit breaking of time-reversal symmetry, two equilibrium states related by time reversal are always energetically degenerate. In ferromagnets such time-reversal degeneracy can be manifested by hysteresis loops in the magnetic field dependence of the magnetization and, if metallic, in the anomalous Hall effect. Importantly, both quantities simply change signs but not their absolute sizes under time reversal, which follows from their fundamental definitions. Our integral experimental and theoretical study shows that in the metallic kagome spin ice HoAgGe subject to finite magnetic fields parallel to the kagome plane, an emergent time-reversal-like degeneracy appears between magnetic states that have the same energy and net magnetization, but different sizes of the anomalous Hall effect. These degeneracies are unraveled by finite hysteresis in the field-dependent anomalous Hall effect contrasted with the vanishing hysteresis in the magnetization, which appears only at low-temperatures T$<$4K when the kagome spin ice is fully ordered into $\sqrt{3}$$\times$$\sqrt{3}$ state. By explicitly determining the degenerate states and calculating the corresponding physical properties using a tight-binding model, we nailed down the time-reversal-like operation that transforms these degenerate states into each other. The operation is related to the nontrivial distortion of the kagome lattice in HoAgGe and is effective only because of the richness of degenerate states unique to kagome spin ice. Our work points to the powerful role of the anomalous Hall effect to diagnose hidden symmetries in frustrated spin systems.

Abstract:In magnetic crystals, despite the explicit breaking of time-reversal symmetry, two equilibrium states related by time reversal are always energetically degenerate. In ferromagnets, this time-reversal degeneracy is reflected in the hysteresis of the magnetic field dependence of the magnetization and, if metallic, in that of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Under time-reversal, both these quantities change signs but not their magnitude. Here we show that a time-reversal-like degeneracy appears in the metallic kagome spin ice HoAgGe when magnetic fields are applied parallel to the kagome plane. We find vanishing hysteresis in the field dependence of the magnetization at low temperature, but finite hysteresis in the field-dependent AHE. This suggests the emergence of states with nearly the same energy and net magnetization but different sizes of the AHE and of the longitudinal magnetoresistance. By analysing the experimental data and a minimal tight-binding model, we identify a time-reversal-like operation connecting these near-degenerate states, which is related to the non-trivial distortion of the kagome lattice in HoAgGe. Our work demonstrates the diagnostic power of transport phenomena for identifying hidden symmetries in frustrated spin systems.

Intrinsic Nonlinear Spin Hall Effect and Manipulation of Perpendicular Magnetization

Abstract:We propose an intrinsic nonlinear spin Hall effect, which enables the generation of collinearly-polarized spin current in a large class of nonmagnetic materials with the corresponding linear response being symmetry-forbidden. This opens a new avenue for field-free switching of perpendicular magnetization, which is required for the next-generation information storage technology. We develop the microscopic theory of this effect, and clarify its quantum origin in band geometric quantities which can be enhanced by topological nodal features. Combined with first-principles calculations, we predict pronounced effects at room temperature in topological metals $\mathrm{PbTaSe_{2}}$ and PdGa. Our work establishes a fundamental nonlinear response in spin transport, and opens the door to exploring spintronic applications based on nonlinear spin Hall effect.

Spin Hall and Edelstein Effects in Novel Chiral Noncollinear Altermagnets

Abstract:Altermagnets are a newly discovered class of magnetic phases that combine the spin polarization behavior of ferromagnetic band structures with the vanishing net magnetization characteristic of antiferromagnets. Initially proposed for collinear magnets, the concept has since been extended to include certain non-collinear structures. A recent development in Landau theory for collinear altermagnets incorporates spin-space symmetries, providing a robust framework for identifying this class of materials. Here we expand on that theory to identify altermagnetic multipolar order parameters in non-collinear chiral materials. We demonstrate that the interplay between non-collinear altermagnetism and chirality allows for spatially odd multipole components, leading to non-trivial spin textures on Fermi surfaces and unexpected transport phenomena, even in the absence of SOC. This makes such chiral altermagnets fundamentally different from the well-known SOC-driven Rashba-Edelstein and spin Hall effects used for 2D spintronics. Choosing the chiral topological magnetic material Mn$_3$IrSi as a case study, we apply toy models and first-principles calculations to predict experimental signatures, such as large spin-Hall and Edelstein effects, that have not been previously observed in altermagnets. These findings pave the way for a new realm of spintronics applications based on spin-transport properties of chiral altermagnets.

Abstract:Electrical detection of the 180 deg spin reversal, which is the basis of the operation of ferromagnetic memories, is among the outstanding challenges in the research of antiferromagnetic spintronics. Analogous effects to the ferromagnetic giant or tunneling magnetoresistance have not yet been realized in antiferromagnetic multilayers. Anomalous Hall effect (AHE), which has been recently employed for spin reversal detection in non-collinear antiferromagnets, is limited to materials that crystalize in ferromagnetic symmetry groups. Here we demonstrate electrical detection of the 180 deg Néel vector reversal in CuMnAs which comprises two collinear spin sublattices and belongs to an antiferromagnetic symmetry group with no net magnetic moment. We detect the spin reversal by measuring a second-order magnetotransport coefficient whose presence is allowed in systems with broken space inversion symmetry. The phenomenology of the non-linear transport effect we observe in CuMnAs is consistent with a microscopic scenario combining anisotropic magneto-resistance (AMR) with a transient tilt of the Néel vector due to a current-induced, staggered spin-orbit field. We use the same staggered spin-orbit field, but of a higher amplitude, for the electrical switching between reversed antiferromagnetic states which are stable and show no sign of decay over 25 hour probing times.

Symmetry and topology in antiferromagnetic spintronics

Abstract:Antiferromagnetic spintronics focuses on investigating and using antiferromagnets as active elements in spintronics structures. Last decade advances in relativistic spintronics led to the discovery of the staggered, current-induced field in antiferromagnets. The corresponding Néel spin-orbit torque allowed for efficient electrical switching of antiferromagnetic moments and, in combination with electrical readout, for the demonstration of experimental antiferromagnetic memory devices. In parallel, the anomalous Hall effect was predicted and subsequently observed in antiferromagnets. A new field of spintronics based on antiferromagnets has emerged. We will focus here on the introduction into the most significant discoveries which shaped the field together with a more recent spin-off focusing on combining antiferromagnetic spintronics with topological effects, such as antiferromagnetic topological semimetals and insulators, and the interplay of antiferromagnetism, topology, and superconductivity in heterostructures.

Spontaneous Hall effect in chiral p-wave superconductor

Abstract:In a chiral superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry a ``spontaneous Hall effect'' may be observed. We analyze this phenomenon by taking into account the surface properties of a chiral superconductor. We identify two main contributions to the spontaneous Hall effect. One contribution originates from the Bernoulli (or Lorentz) force from spontaneous currents running along the surfaces of the superconductor. The other contribution has a topological origin and is related to the intrinsic angular momentum of Cooper pairs. The latter can be described in terms of a Chern-Simons-like term in the low-energy field theory of the superconductor and has some similarities with the quantum Hall effect. The spontaneous Hall effect in a chiral superconductor is, however, non-universal. Our analysis is based on three approaches to the problem: a self-consistent solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, a generalized Ginzburg-Landau theory, and a hydrodynamic formulation. All three methods consistently lead to the same conclusion that the spontaneous Hall resistance of a two-dimensional superconducting Hall bar is of order h/(e k_F\lambda)^2, where k_F is the Fermi wave vector and \lambda is the London penetration depth; the Hall resistance is substantially suppressed from a quantum unit of resistance. Experimental issues in measuring this effect are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The anomalous Hall effect has been front and center in solid state research and material science for over a century now, and the complex transport phenomena in nontrivial magnetic textures have gained an increasing amount of attention, both in theoretical and experimental studies. However, a clear path forward to capturing the influence of magnetization dynamics on anomalous Hall effect even in smallest frustrated magnets or spatially extended magnetic textures is still intensively sought after. In this work, we present an expansion of the anomalous Hall tensor into symmetrically invariant objects, encoding the magnetic configuration up to arbitrary power of spin. We show that these symmetric invariants can be utilized in conjunction with advanced regularization techniques in order to build models for the electric transport in magnetic textures which are, on one hand, complete with respect to the point group symmetry of the underlying lattice, and on the other hand, depend on a minimal number of order parameters only. Here, using a four-band tight-binding model on a honeycomb lattice, we demonstrate that the developed method can be used to address the importance and properties of higher-order contributions to transverse transport. The efficiency and breadth enabled by this method provides an ideal systematic approach to tackle the inherent complexity of response properties of noncollinear magnets, paving the way to the exploration of electric transport in intrinsically frustrated magnets as well as large-scale magnetic textures.

Abstract:We study the dependence of the intrinsic spin Hall effect on the crystal symmetry and geometry of experiment. The spin current is obtained and the Hall voltage caused by the polarization of the electron spins is computed. The unique dependence of the effect on the crystal symmetry permits the choice of geometry in which the spin Hall effect can be unambiguously distinguished from the effects due to the orbital motion of charge carriers and due to the magnetic field generated by the transport current.
