Abstract:The seasonal incidence of diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) and its parasitoids in relation to climatological factors was studied with staggered sowings of cabbage during the years 2013 and 2014 at the NBAIR research farmat Attur, Bengaluru. The pest population peaked during the early summer, March-April months (342 and 243/60 plants) followed by post rainy season, August-October (184 and 208/60 plants) and was low during the early winter months December-January (65 and 68/60 plants) followed by July-August (98 and 96/60 plants). A maximum temperature of 30-35°C with a relative humidity of 61-75% favoured the buildup of the pest. The larval incidence had significant positive correlation with maximum temperature (r = 0.837; P = 0.01) and with minimum temperature (r = 0.594; P = 0.05). Rainfall and number of sunshine hours had a negative impact. The larval parasitoid Cotesiavestalis and the late larval-pupal parasitoid Oomyzus sokolowskii were found to be predominant during both the years of study. Parasitism by C. vestalis was maximum during August- September months (64.89-82.2%), was low during December-January months (41.5-47.5%). O. sokolowskii prevailed high during December- January months (33.33-37.5%) and low during February - March (8.82-8.75%) and July/August-September (6.25-10.0%). Occurrence of the parasitoids was more at minimum temperature of 16-19oC and maximum temperature of 19-33oC with relative humidity 62.5-73.5%.. Rainfall did not influence the activity of both the parasitoids. The activity of the parasitoids was in accordance with the population density of the pest during the various seasons. Augmentative releases of the parasitoids during the periods of their low incidence would provide for greater suppression of the pest and result inreduced usage of insecticides.

Abstract:An investigation of insect parasitoids of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus), in brassica vegetable crops in the suburbs of Hangzhou was conducted during five periods from 1989 to 1997. Eight species of primary parasitoids were recorded: Trichogramma chilonis Ishii, Cotesia plutellae Kurdjumov, Microplitis sp., Oomyzus sokolowskii Kurdjumov, Diadromus collaris (Gravenhorst), Itoplectis naranyae (Ashmead), Exochus sp. and Brachymeria excarinata Gahan. Seven species of hyperparasitoids were also collected. Rates of parasitism of eggs of P. xylostella were usually very low. However, rates of parasitism of larvae and pupae were substantial and showed two peaks each year, around June-July and September-November respectively. Rates of parasitism during peaks were usually 10-60% and reached over 80% on a few occasions. Cotesia plutellae, O. sokolowskii and D. collaris were the major larval, larval-pupal and pupal parasitoids respectively. In the field, C. plutellae was active throughout the year. Oomyzus sokolowskii was active from May to October, entered a quiescent pupal stage in October-November to overwinter and did not emerge until next April-May. Diadromus collaris was recorded from April to July and October. Rates of parasitism of P. xylostella in radish and mustard fields were usually higher than those in cabbage and Chinese cabbage fields in the same locality. Negative correlations of parasitism rates between C. plutellae and O. sokolowskii indicate a competitive relationship for host larvae between these two larval parasitoids.
Biology of diamond back moth, Plutella xylostella Linn.

Abstract:Accepted : June, 2009 Diamond back moth, Plutella xylostella Linn. is the most noxious pest of cabbage crop which occurs almost all over the world and causes severe damage to the crop. The pest was first recorded from South America in 1890 and then from Venezuala in 1939 (Saravaiya and Patel, 2005). The larvae mine the cabbage leaves on their undersurfaces in the earlier stages while in the later stages they feed on leaves. The larvae feed on the leaves to the extent of 62 to 78 per cent, causing irregular patches on the leaves (Harcourt, 1957). All the leaf tissues are consumed by the larvae except the veins. The last stage larvae are voracious feeders which cause more injury than the first three larval instars creating a ‘windows’ to the leaves. Thus, the larvae skeletonise the plants and growth of plants remains stunted in cases of severe attack. The pest causes the damage right from seedling stage to till harvest. As a result there is a reduction in quality and yield of the produce. Abraham and Padmanaban (1968) reported 31 per cent yield loss to cabbage crop due to P. xylostella attack while Krishnakumar et al. (1986) estimated 52 per cent losses in the marketable yield due to the attack of this pest.

Abstract:The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is a major pest of Brassica crops worldwide. This study explores the application of Brassica spp. allelochemicals in trapping diamondback moth adults. The effectiveness of eight commercially obtained Brassica spp. volatiles has been investigated, including - (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, cis-3-hexene-1-ol, β-pinene, sabinene, n-heptanal, allyl isothiocyanate, and Brassica non-volatiles - sinigrin and 4-methylsulfinylbutyl glucosinolate. These allelochemicals were tested at varying concentrations (10 to 90 μg/μL) in laboratory and open-screen cage environment trapping experiments. Cis-3-hexene-1-ol, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, sabinene, and β-pinene significantly attracted and trapped more female moths than controls; attraction decreased at higher concentrations. A 1:1 blend of cis-3-hexene-1-ol and (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate displayed optimal attraction in lab and open environment trials for the tested blends. Among the colors tested, green-colored containers proved to be the most effective for trapping. While the plant allelochemicals attracted diamondback moths, signs of non-target cabbage loopers were observed on treated plants. Y-tube olfactometer assays revealed that (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate and cis-3-hexene-1-ol were attractive to both male and female moths. These findings demonstrate the potential of Brassica spp. allelochemicals, particularly cis-3-hexene-1-ol and (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, for trapping diamondback moths. Geographical variations in life histories of Plutella xylostella in China

Abstract:The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is one of the most important pests of crucifers worldwide. Susceptibility to insecticides and host plants of P. xylostella vary geographically. To investigate local adaptation, we measured the variation of the biology, life-histories and life-table parameters of P. xylostella populations from five widely ranging geographical regions in China, Beijing (BJ), Shandong (SD), Shaanxi (SX), Yunnan (YN), and Guangdong (GD), using the same variety of cabbage ( Brassicae oleracea L. var. capitata ; var. “Qingan 80”) as the food plant at the same temperature in the laboratory. Principal components analysis showed the life-history and life-table parameters of P. xylostella differed among the five geographical populations. The first component, including female fecundity and adult longevity and male adult longevity, accounted for the most variation among the five geographical regions, which can be classified into three groups: BJ–SX, YN–GD, and SD. The intrinsic rate of increase ( r m ) was greatest in BJ and SX, intermediate for GD and YN, and the lowest for SD, whereas mean generation time ( T ) was greatest in SD, intermediate for YN and GD, and the lowest for BJ and SX. These variations reflect the importance of local genetic adaptation and should be considered when planning management of P. xylostella in China.

Abstract:The spatial patterns of Plutella xylostella pupae in the critical growing stage of Brassica oleracea were analyzed by geostatistical methods,and the semivariogram curve models in the south-north orientation were established.The results showed that the semivariogram curves of P.xylostella pupae were fitted with the spherical models at all three sampling dates(October 9,17 and 31,2010),and their spatial distribution showed aggregative pattern;the spatial ranges of pupae were 7.91m,9.10m and 1.74m,respectively,and the spatial discontinuities were 0.5858,0.3987 and 0.9970,respectively for the three sampling dates.

Abstract:Cabbage is a popular cruciferous vegetable crop consumed for various purposes not only in the world, but also in Nepal. Among several pests, Diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella.L.) is a primary pest causing heavy loss of cabbage field each year in Nepal. Damage is caused by larvae. The trend of extensive and unscientific use of insecticide has resulted a devastating loss in cabbage production (31%-100%) and economic yield (US $4-US$5billion each year) on one hand and challenging the environment on the other hand. Thus integrated pest management practices, including botanical, biological, cultural methods and use of resistant varieties are effective. Annosom (extract of Annona spp.1%) and Neemix (extract of Azadirachta indica, 60%w/w) are effective botanical pesticides. Diadegma spp, among various biological control agents, is effective. Two rows of mustard for every twenty-five rows of cabbage is effective trap cropping. Yellow sticky trap is best for DBM monitoring and control. The seasonal irrigation and rain interferes the mating and oviposition and thus control of the pest. Spinosad, Indoxacarb and Emamectin benzoate are mostly used insecticides for the control of this moth. Use of specific resistant varieties like, G 9101 and G 9619 and transgenic lines are effective but in Nepalese context, least adopted by Nepalese farmers. Int. J. Appl. Sci. Biotechnol. Abstract:Field trials and laboratory bioassays were undertaken to compare the performance and efficacy (mortality of diamondback moth larvae) of insecticides applied to cabbages with three high volume hydraulic knapsack sprayers (NS-16, PB-20 and Selecta 12V) and a controlled droplet application (CDA) sprayer. In field experiments, the high volume knapsack sprayers (application rate 500-600 L ha(-1)) provided better spray coverage on the upper and lower surfaces of inner leaves, the upper surfaces of middle and outer leaves, and greater biological efficacy than the CDA sprayer (application rate 20similar to40 L ha(-1)). The PB-20 provided better spray coverage on the upper surface of middle leaves and both surfaces of outer leaves when compared with the Selecta 12V. However, its biological efficacy in the field was not significantly different from that of the other high volume sprayers. Increasing the application rate from 20 to 40 L ha(-1) for the CDA sprayer significantly increased droplet density but had no impact on test insect mortality. Laboratory evaluations of biological efficacy yielded higher estimates than field evaluations and there was no significant difference between the performance of the PB-20 and the CDA sprayer. Significant positive relationships were detected between insect mortality and droplet density deposited for both the PB-20 and the CDA sprayers.
Spatio-temporal distribution patterns of Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) in a fine-scale agricultural landscape based on geostatistical analysis

Abstract:Abstract A detailed knowledge on the spatial distribution of pests is crucial for predicting population outbreaks or developing control strategies and sustainable management plans. The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella , is one of the most destructive pests of cruciferous crops worldwide. Despite the abundant research on the species’s ecology, little is known about the spatio-temporal pattern of P . xylostella in an agricultural landscape. Therefore, in this study, the spatial distribution of P . xylostella was characterized to assess the effect of landscape elements in a fine-scale agricultural landscape by geostatistical analysis. The P . xylostella adults captured by pheromone-baited traps showed a seasonal pattern of population fluctuation from October 2015 to September 2017, with a marked peak in spring, suggesting that mild temperatures, 15–25 °C, are favorable for P . xylostella . Geostatistics (GS) correlograms fitted with spherical and Gaussian models showed an aggregated distribution in 21 of the 47 cases interpolation contour maps. This result highlighted that spatial distribution of P . xylostella was not limited to the Brassica vegetable field, but presence was the highest there. Nevertheless, population aggregations also showed a seasonal variation associated with the growing stage of host plants. GS model analysis showed higher abundances in cruciferous fields than in any other patches of the landscape, indicating a strong host plant dependency. We demonstrate that Brassica vegetables distribution and growth stage, have dominant impacts on the spatial distribution of P . xylostella in a fine-scale landscape. This work clarified the spatio-temporal dynamic and distribution patterns of P . xylostella in an agricultural landscape, and the distribution model developed by geostatistical analysis can provide a scientific basis for precise targeting and localized control of P . xylostella .

Abstract:The ecological implications on biological control of insecticidal transgenic plants, which produce crystal (Cry) proteins derived from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), remains a contentious issue and affects risk assessment decisions. In this study, we used a unique system of resistant insects, Bt plants and a predator to critically evaluate this issue. The effects of broccoli type (normal or expressing Cry1Ac protein) and insect genotype (susceptible or Cry1Ac-resistant) of Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) were examined for their effects on the life history of the predator, Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) over two generations. Additional behavioral studies were conducted on prey choice. C. maculata could not discriminate between Bt-resistant and susceptible genotypes of P. xylostella, nor between Bt and normal broccoli plants with resistant genotypes of P. xylostella feeding on them. The larval and pupal period, adult weight and fecundity of each female were not significantly different when C. maculata larvae fed on different genotypes (Bt-resistant or susceptible) of insect prey larvae reared on Bt or non-Bt broccoli plants. The life-history parameters of the subsequent generation of C. maculata fed on Bt broccoli-reared resistant P. xylostella were also not significantly different from those on non-Bt broccoli. These results indicated that Cry1Ac did not harm the life history or prey acceptance of an important predator after two generations of exposure. Plants expressing Cry1Ac are unlikely to affect this important predator in the field. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The ovipositional preference of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) between different Brassica vegetable plants and the host selection by Cotesia plutellae (Kurdjmov) between host larvae on different Brassica plants were studied. With the presence of both the Chinese cabbage, B. campestris L. ssp. pekinensis, the common cabbage, Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata, P. xylostella, moths laid three times as many eggs on the former as that on the latter plants. When C. plutellae wasps were provided with equal numbers of larvae of P. xylostella on both species of plants in one area, parasitism rate of hosts on B. campestris was almost five times that on B. oleracea. The possible effects of infochemicals from the Brassica plants on the oviposition preference of P. xylostella and on the host selection by C. plutellae were discussed.
Experimental Analysis of the Influence of Pest Management Practice on the Efficacy of an Endemic Arthropod Natural Enemy Complex of the Diamondback Moth.

Abstract:Maximizing the contribution of endemic natural enemies to integrated pest management (IPM), programs requires a detailed knowledge of their interactions with the target pest. This experimental field study evaluated the impact of the endemic natural enemy complex of Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) on pest populations in commercial cabbage crops in southeastern Queensland, Australia. Management data were used to score pest management practices at experimental sites on independent Brassica farms practicing a range of pest management strategies, and mechanical methods of natural enemy exclusion were used to assess the impact of natural enemies on introduced cohorts of P. xylostella at each site. Natural enemy impact was greatest at sites adopting IPM and least at sites practicing conventional pest management strategies. At IPM sites, the contribution of natural enemies to P. xylostella mortality permitted the cultivation of marketable crops with no yield loss but with a substantial reduction in insecticide inputs. Three species of larval parasitoids (Diadegma semiclausum Hellén [Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae], Apanteles ippeus Nixon [Hymenoptera: Braconidae], and Oomyzus sokolowskii Kurdjumov [Hymenoptera: Eulophidae]) and one species of pupal parasitoid Diadromus collaris Gravenhorst (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) attacked immature P. xylostella. The most abundant groups of predatory arthropods caught in pitfall traps were Araneae (Lycosidae) > Coleoptera (Carabidae, Coccinelidae, Staphylinidae) > Neuroptera (Chrysopidae) > Formicidae, whereas on crop foliage Araneae (Clubionidae, Oxyopidae) > Coleoptera (Coccinelidae) > Neuroptera (Chrysopidae) were most common. The abundance and diversity of natural enemies was greatest at sites that adopted IPM, correlating greater P. xylostella mortality at these sites. The efficacy of the natural enemy complex to pest mortality under different pest management regimes and appropriate strategies to optimize this important natural resource are discussed.

Abstract:Greenhouse studies were conducted to examine the effects of light intensity on pac choi (Brassica rapa L. var. chinensis cv. Mei Qing Choi) and the corresponding plant-mediated effects of light intensity on the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.). Plants with and without diamondback moth larvae were exposed either to ambient light or shade in 4 experiments conducted at different times of the year, resulting in a range of light intensities. The plant parameters measured were shoot biomass, primary nutrients, and phenolic content of leaves; for diamondback moth, larval consumption, cohort development, and male and female body weights were measured. In the light treatments, plants tended to have higher levels of phenolics and exhibited greater shoot biomass with higher carbon:nitrogen ratios under ambient versus shade. However, diamondback moth responses were not correlated with any plant responses, with one exception. Higher concentrations of ferulic acid under higher light intensities were associated with lower adult male body weights. Larval consumption was not different among the 4 months. However, cohort development was more rapid on plants during August, which had higher light intensities, compared with July, where light intensity was lower. Based on the responses measured, growing pac choi in the greenhouse under different light intensities is unlikely to affect diamondback moths through changes in pac choi chemistry unless decreased male body weight confers a fitness cost. However, plant-mediated effects associated with changes in light intensity on P. xylostella survival should be evaluated.

Quantitative evaluation of the biotic mortality factors affecting diamondback moth in south-east Queensland, Australia

Abstract:The impact of natural enemies on immature stages of the diamondback moth was quantitatively assessed in commercial cabbage crops in southeast Queensland, Australia, in 2000 and 2001. The survivorship of Plutella xylostella (L.) eggs, larvae and pupae on cabbage plants caged to exclude predators and larval and pupal parasitoids was compared with survivorship on cabbage plants which were caged to simulate the ambient conditions created by the exclusion cages, but which allowed natural enemy access. In 2000, six cohorts of P. xylostella were studied on three commercial Brassica farms which adopted an integrated approach to pest management and six cohorts were studied on three farms which adopted a calendar spray approach to pest management; a further two cohorts were followed in cabbage plots at Gatton Research Station. In 2001, two cohorts were followed on a farm adopting IPM and two cohorts were followed on a farm practising calendar spraying. Estimated losses due to predation ranged from 2-85% in 2000 and from 22-77% in 2001. When losses and mortality due to parasitism were combined, total estimated losses ranged from 2-98% in 2000 and from 22-90% in 2001. Larval and pupal parasitism rates were low in both years of the study but, in order of abundance, the hymenopteran parasitoids detected could be ranked Diadegma semiclausum > Diadromus collaris > Apanteles ippeus > Oomyzus sokolowskii. This study represents the first record of O. sokolowskii attacking P. xylostella in Australia. Pitfall trapping indicated that Araneae (Lycosidae and Oxyopidae) were the most abundant insectivorous predators but that Coleoptera (Carabidae, Staphylinidae and Coccinellidae) and Hemiptera were also relatively abundant on commercial Brassica farms in south-east Queensland.

Abstract:Abstract Nearly 65 years ago, D.G. Harcourt developed the first of 74 life tables of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), on the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and at nearby sites. This work is cited whenever authors discuss the life history of the diamondback moth and its parasitoids in Canada. Since Harcourt’s study, climate change, urbanisation, and crop diversity may have altered the population dynamics of both the diamondback moth and its natural enemy community in the original study area. To follow up on Harcourt’s work, we used two approaches to build life tables to describe mortality factors in the field and the natural enemies attacking diamondback moth in Ottawa: destructive sampling of mature cabbage, Brassica oleracea Linnaeus (Brassicaceae), plants similar to Harcourt’s approach and a modern sentinel-based approach with an enemy exclusion cage treatment. After 65 years, the primary parasitoids attacking diamondback moth remained the same, although more parasitoid diversity was revealed by the destructive sampling technique. Total mortality and parasitism levels also remained similar. In one notable difference, we attributed more diamondback mortality to predation. Overall, however, diamondback moth population dynamics have changed little in Ottawa in the decades since Harcourt’s studies.

Abstract:The diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is a severe and most destructive pest of cruciferous vegetables in many parts of the world, including Nepal. The natural history and ecology of the diamondback moth are summarized here, along with appropriate management options. Caterpillar is the most devastating stage of DBM that matures and causes “windowing” damage, leaving only the epidermis. Biological control, cultural practices, effective chemical control, botanical pesticides, and host plant resistance are the most viable options. Insecticide abuse and resistance concerns are likely to persist, as numerous research-based outcomes have proven that none of these measures will suffice independently. However, these techniques can complement each other and result in a better long-term management system when combined. This review highlights the integrated eco-friendly management strategies for DBM and other cruciferous insect pests. Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which focuses on sustainable production, has shown promising results. Modern management techniques include genetic modification, use of parasitoids, modified cultural methods, the precautionary application of chemicals, resistant cultivars, fungal, bacterial (Bt. based biopesticides), and viral entomopathogens, etc., which are found to be more effective and eco-friendlier.
Laboratory Evaluations of a Wild Crucifer Barbarea Vulgaris As a Management Tool for the Diamondback Moth Plutella Xylostella (lepidoptera: Plutellidae).

Abstract:The term 'dead-end trap cropping' has recently been proposed to identify a plant that is highly attractive for oviposition by an insect pest, but on which offspring of the pest cannot survive. The potential of the wild crucifer Barbarea vulgaris R. Br. to allure and serve as a dead-end trap crop for the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.), an important pest of cruciferous crops worldwide, was examined in laboratory experiments. When P. xylostella adults were provided with a dual-choice of plants of B. vulgaris, and Chinese cabbage Brassica campestris (L.), in one arena, adult moths laid 2.5-6.8 times more eggs on the former than on the latter. When P. xylostella adults were provided with a dual-choice of plants of B. vulgaris and common cabbage Brassica oleracea L., adult moths laid virtually all their eggs on the former and ignored the latter. Nearly all P. xylostella eggs laid on the three species of plants hatched successfully, but nearly all individuals on plants of B. vulgaris died as neonates or early instar larvae, while 87-100% of the larvae on Chinese cabbage and common cabbage survived to pupation. Dual choice tests with a Y-tube olfactometer showed that volatiles from B. vulgaris were much more attractive to P. xylostella adults than those from common cabbage. The results demonstrate that B. vulgaris has a great potential as a dead-end trap crop for improving management of P. xylostella. Factors that may influence the feasibility of using B. vulgaris as a trap crop in the field are discussed, and ways to utilize this plant are proposed.

Abstract:The diamondback moth,Plutella xylostella,is one of the most destructive insect pests of cruciferous crops throughout the world.The hymenopteran parasitoids are important natural enemies for controlling the insect pest.In this paper,the hymenopteran parasitoids of the larvae and pupae of the diamondback moth in the field in Ningbo were investigated from April 2007 to January 2009.In total,four-teen parasitoid species were found,of which eight are primary parasitoids(Cotesia vestalis,Cotesia ruficrus,Diadromus collaris,Macromalon orientale,Campoletis chlorideae,Brachymeria excarinata,Campoletis sp.and Diadegma sp.),one facultative hyperparasitoid(Oomyzus sokolowskii) and five hyperparasitoids(Mesochorus discitergus,Eurytoma verticillata,Trichomalopsis oryzae,Trichomalopsis apanteloctena and Tetrastichus sp.).Generally,Oomyzus sokolowskii and Cotesia vestalis were the dominant species,accounting for 62.23% and 31.19% of the total numbers,respectively.Higher parasitism rate was found on larval stage of diamondback moth than that on pupal stage in the field.The results also indicated that high diversity of vegetable varieties in the field is favorable to the protection of parasitoids.
