Abstract:Dynamic structural color has attracted considerable attentions due to its good tunable characteristics. Here, an ultrathin asymmetric Fabry-Perot (FP)-type structural color with phase-change material VO2 cavity is proposed. The color-switching performance can be realized by temperature regulation due to the reversible monoclinic-rutile phase transition of VO2. The various, vivid structural color can be generated by simply changing the thickness of VO2 and Ag layers. Moreover, the simple structural configuration enables a large-scale, low-cost preparation on both rigid and flexible substrates. Accordingly, a flexible dynamic structural color membrane is adhered on a cup with a curved surface to be used for temperature perception. The proposed dynamic structural color has potential applications in anti-counterfeiting, temperature perception, camouflage coatings among other flexible optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel strategy for developing reversible thermochromic fluorescent films by precisely controlling the nanoscale proximity of boron nitride quantum dots and curcumin molecules within a poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) matrix. The synergistic interaction and Förster resonance energy transfer between these fluorophores result in an energy transfer efficiency of ∼94%. This approach enables tunable color changes in response to temperature variations, governed by the segmental mobility of polymer chains. Practical applications of these films as temperature sensors for water bottles and electronic devices are demonstrated, highlighting their potential in temperature monitoring, smart packaging, and thermal management systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate Thermotion, a novel method using thermofluidic composites to design and display thermochromic animation effects on object surfaces. With fluidic channels embedded under the object surfaces, the composites utilize thermofluidic flows to dynamically control the surface temperature as an actuator for thermochromic paints, which enables researchers and designers for the first time to create animations not only on two and three-dimensional surfaces but also on the surface made of a few flexible everyday materials. We demonstrate the fabrication workflow of the composites and the design space of the animation effects. A range of applications is shown leveraging the objects’ dynamic displays both visually and thermally, including dynamic artifacts, teaching aids, and ambient displays. We envision an opportunity to extend thermofluidic composites to other heat-related practices for further dynamic and programmable interactions with temperature.

Abstract:Abstract Accurate temperature measurements can efficiently solve numerous critical problems and provide key information. Herein, a flexible micro-three-dimensional sensor, with a combination of platinum and indium oxide to form thermocouples, is designed and fabricated by a microfabrication process to achieve in situ real-time temperature measurements. The stability and reliability of the sensor are greatly improved by optimizing the process parameters, structural design, and preparation methods. A novel micro-three-dimensional structure with better malleability is designed, which also takes advantage of the fast response of a two-dimensional thin film. The as-obtained flexible temperature sensor with excellent stability and reliability is expected to greatly contribute to the development of essential components in various emerging research fields, including bio-robot and healthcare systems. The model of the application sensor in a mask is further proposed and designed to realize the collection of health information, reducing the number of deaths caused by the lack of timely detection and treatment of patients.

Three‐Output Naked‐Eye High Temperature Organic Film Threshold Thermometers Based on Non‐Invasive Chemical Reaction

Abstract:High-contrast and stably visualized ambient or luminescent color-switching can be achieved by thermal-induced non-invasive chemical reaction for naked-eye threshold temperature indication. The clear and visible output signal of these indicators arises from the large absorption/emission spectral changes upon heating. However, such chemical reactions are difficult to realize in solid-state, especially in the high-temperature region. Herein, a series of naked-eye high-temperature threshold film indicators have been developed based on the solid-state in situ thermal decomposition reaction of difluoroboron beta-diketonate derivative. These thermosensitive films feature three high-contrast visible outputs of ambient thermochromism, fluorescence color change, and luminescence ON/OFF switching, which can be easily detected with the naked eye. The PR-PS film of (E)-4-(2-(6-bromopyren-1-yl)vinyl)-2,2-difluoro-6-phenyl-2H-1 lambda(3),3,2 lambda(4)-dioxaborinine (PR) doped in polystyrene (PS) polymer matrix achieved high sensitivities related to change of ratiometric luminescence and fluorescence intensity up to 230%degrees C-1 and 1.85%degrees C-1, respectively. Furthermore, the polymer matrix with different glass transition temperatures enables programmable tuning of threshold temperature from 120 to 180 degrees C. These thermosensitive films show clear and high-contrast color changes and emission turn-off in real-time with consistent air stability, high photostability, and waterproofing property. This shows considerable potential in outdoor robust high-temperature threshold sensing and information storage.
A real-time temperature responsive material based on partial inverse opal photonic crystals and cholesteric liquid crystals

Abstract:In this paper, we fabricated a temperature-sensitive material with a partial inverse opal structure, which can reversibly and quickly identify small temperature changes at room temperature and show significant color differences. First, we synthesized silica microsphere and prepared silica photonic crystals (PCs), then we composited PCs with polymer. After covering the mask, we prepared partial inverse opal silica PCs template by using selective etching. The temperature-sensitive liquid crystals (LCs) composed of cholesterol oleyl carbonate (COC), cholesterol nonanoate (CPE) and cholesterol benzoate (CBZ) were filled in partial inverse opal silica PCs template. In the end, we sealed the film by methyl methacrylate (MMA) and polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA). In this way, we prepared the fast temperature-sensitive dual-opal PCs/LCs composite film, and studied the mechanism of temperature regulation on material display mode. As the temperature gone from 26 °C to 30 °C, the material changed colors rapidly from red to blue. The result showed that this PCs/LCs composite film had well temperature response performance, which can monitor slight environmental temperature change. By selective etching the material, we designed PCs film patterns. The different patterning states displayed and changed fast at different temperatures, showing that the material had a good application prospect in the fields of temperature sensor, anti-counterfeiting, and display device.

Abstract:Thermochromic materials are of great interest because of their color transition characteristic as a function of temperature, and this property may find potential applications as a temperature indicator. Irreversible thermochromic materials that display color change at low temperatures can be utilized as a temperature indicator to ensure the safety and quality of deep-frozen products during storage and transportation. In this work, we have successfully prepared a novel colorimetric sensor based on a functionalized polydiacetylene dye. In order to achieve thermochromic transition in different temperature ranges, pentacosadiynoic acid (PC) was functionalized with ethylene glycol monomethylether (EGME), diethylene glycol monomethyl ether (DGME) and triethylene glycol monomethyl ether (TGME), resulting the formation of ester head groups. Photopolymerization of the synthesized diacetylene dyes was carried out to convert the monomers of the dyes into polymers. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the synthesized product. The absorption spectroscopy and optical images study revealed that the functionalized dyes underwent irreversible thermochromic transition when exposed to freezing temperatures. This property of irreversible color transition can make them a reliable indicator of temperature change. The functional dye was incorporated into a polymer film to apply directly on deep freeze products as a polymer strip and when the temperature increases upon freezing level, the color of the thermochromic strip changes which can provide a visual warning to the consumers and manufacturers.

Concentration-Induced Phase Separation to Suppress Energy Transfer for High-Temperature Ratiometric Sensing in Organic Films

Abstract:Energy transfer is usually applied in ratiometric thermometry, but it often decreases sensitivities due to much reduced distinguishment in the thermal responses of two different-colored emitters. Herein, a feasible strategy to restrain energy transfer is utilized for achieving sensitive high-temperature detection, simply by increasing the dopant concentration to induce microphase separation. Atomic force microscopy phase images reveal that this phase separation becomes dominant when the doping ratio reaches above 40%. This results in suppression of energy transfer, which is evidenced by systematic photophysical investigations. On this basis, by using heat-resistant emitters, a series of inexpensive and easily prepared solid-film organic high-temperature ratiometric thermometers are developed. They exhibit a broad eye-detective sensing range of 102-236 degrees C with the relative sensitivity (S-r) higher than 0.5% K-1 and the maximum temperature resolution attaining 0.39 K. Good reversibility and stability are also demonstrated in ambient atmosphere.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid halide materials have been gaining tremendous interest due to unique optical, electrical and magnetic properties. However, large bandgap limits their applications. Here, we report a series of organic-inorganic hybrid halide semiconductors, with an exotic and fully reversible thermochromatism, narrow bandgap and near-infrared luminescence. Through precise molecular modification, we successfully adjusted bandgap from 1.910 to 2.120 eV. And then effective temperature-derived bandgap modulation, from 2.120 to 1.590 eV. Changing temperature results in the reversible color between yellow and purple black. The intrinsic bandgap is negligible after repeated heating/cooling cycles, indicating better thermal and environmental stability. Thermochromic behavior of hybrid structures is usually caused by lattice distortion, lattice expansion or ion rearrangement. This work demonstrates that an efficient thermochromism leading to bandgap modulation, and it has great potential in the application of intelligent windows and temperature sensors. In addition, thermochromism induced bandgap narrowing provide new insights for the further of organic-inorganic hybrid halide materials.

Abstract:Color-changing fibers, which can intuitively convey information to the human eye, can be used to facilely add functionality to various types of clothing. However, they are often expensive and complex, and can suffer from low durability. Therefore, in this study, we developed highly elastic and hydrophobic thermochromic fibers as wearable temperature sensors using a simple method that does not require an electric current. A thermochromic pigment was embedded inside and outside hydrophobic silica aerogel particles, following which the thermochromic aerogel was fixed to highly elastic spandex fibers using polydimethylsiloxane as a flexible binder. In particular, multi-strand spandex fibers were used instead of single strands, resulting in the thermochromic aerogels penetrating the inside of the strands upon their expansion by solvent swelling. During drying, the thermochromic aerogel adhered more tightly to the fibers by compressing the strands. The thermochromic fiber was purple at room temperature (25 °C), but exhibited a two-stage color change to blue and then white as the temperature increased to 37 °C. In addition, even after 100 cycles of tension-contraction at 200%, the thermochromic aerogel did not detach and was strongly attached to the fiber. Additionally, it was confirmed that color change due to temperature was stable even after exposure to 1 wt% NaCl (artificial sweat) and 0.1 wt% detergent solutions. The developed thermochromic fiber therefore exhibited excellent elasticity and hydrophobicity, and is expected to be widely utilized as an economical wearable temperature sensor as it does not require electrical devices.

Abstract:Conducting polymers have shown appealing performances as sensing materials in various smart sensors such as gas, chemical and biological sensors, owing to their unique physical and electrical properties. This study reports a novel development for the fabrication of visual-aided smart thermal (VAST) sensors. The sensors are based on conducting polymers, temperature-sensitive resin, and liquid crystal molecules via direct scrawling and in situ solventless polymerization. In the VAST sensor, the thermochromism resins and liquid crystals form a visual-aided system with the real-time early warning function and the conducting polymers provide an ultrahigh resolution by the measure of the change of resistivity. Additionally, these VAST sensors also hold the advantages of low cost, using simple tools, high stability, excellent adaptability to arbitrary substrates, wide application fields, and facile large-scale fabrication. These properties are in favor of fabricating smart thermal sensors to satisfy the practical demands, such as the demonstrated temperature detecting system (especially flexible devices with nonplanar surface), thermodefect diagnostic system, smart battery monitoring system, and other environment monitoring.

Abstract:Color-changeable fibers can provide diverse functions for intelligent wearable devices such as novel information displays and human-machine interfaces when woven into fabric. This work develops a low-cost, effective, and scalable strategy to produce thermochromic fibers by wet spinning. Through a combination of different thermochromic microcapsules, flexible fibers with abundant and reversible color changes are obtained. These color changes can be clearly observed by the naked eye. It is also found that the fibers exhibit excellent color-changing stability even after 8000 thermal cycles. Moreover, the thermochromic fibers can be fabricated on a large scale and easily woven or implanted into various fabrics with good mechanical performance. Driven by their good mechanical and physical characteristics, applications of thermochromic fibers in dynamic colored display are demonstrated. Dynamic quick response (QR) code display and recognition are successfully realized with thermochromic fabrics. This work well confirms the potential applications of thermochromic fibers in smart textiles, wearable devices, flexible displays, and human-machine interfaces.
Screen-printed flexible temperature sensor based on FG/CNT/PDMS composite with constant TCR

Abstract:This work present the fabrication and characterization of a flexible temperature sensor based on the flake graphite (FG)/carbon nanotube (CNT)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite. The sensor shows high temperature sensitivity and good linearity. The FG/CNT/PDMS temperature-sensitive films are prepared by the screen printing process. Superior printability of the FG/CNT/PDMS inks is demonstrated by means of rheology. Field emission scanning electron microscope investigation reveals an interpenetrating network structures between the FG and CNT. Moreover, thermal gravity analysis illustrates that the FG/CNT/PDMS temperature-sensitive films have a better thermal stability than that of PDMS blank control film. The temperature-dependent resistance behavior suggests that the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) value of the FG/CNT/PDMS films can be manipulated by the mass ratio of FG to CNT. When the mass ratio of FG to CNT is 4:1, the TCR is almost reproducible and maintained at the same level of 0.028 K−1 for repeated thermal cycles. These results indicate that the developed FG/CNT/PDMS composite has potential applications for the flexible temperature sensor.

Abstract:Abstract Threshold temperature sensors are crucial for recording the thermal histories of environments under different scenarios. However, most organic threshold thermometers are not suitable for high‐temperature indication due to significant thermo‐facilitated emission quenching. Here, a series of ratiometric luminescent high‐temperature threshold organic film indicators have been realized by synergetic effects of intramolecular local excited to charge transfer states and disaggregation from excimer to monomer. Varying the polymer matrixes with different glass transition temperatures effectively tunes the threshold sensing temperatures. More importantly, the wide sensing span of the high‐temperature region enables the single‐sample films (in one kind of polymer matrix) to achieve multiple temperature threshold indications, directed only by multiple naked‐eye emission color changes. These drop‐casting organic film thermometers indicate great potential in robust and low‐cost outdoor applications, as well as large‐area and flexible threshold temperature sensing.

Abstract:Flexible thermoelectric materials have drawn significant attention from researchers due to their potential applications in wearable electronics and the Internet of Things. Despite many reports on these materials, it remains a significant challenge to develop cost-effective methods for large-scale, patterned fabrication of materials that exhibit both excellent thermoelectric performance and remarkable flexibility. In this study, we have developed an Ag2Se-based ink with excellent printability that can be used to fabricate flexible thermoelectric films by screen printing and low-temperature sintering. The printed films exhibit a Seebeck coefficient of -161 μV/K and a power factor of 3250.9 μW/m·K2 at 400 K. Moreover, the films demonstrate remarkable flexibility, showing minimal changes in resistance after being bent 5000 times at a radius of 5 mm. Overall, this research offers a new opportunity for the large-scale patterned production of flexible thermoelectric films.
UV polymerization fabrication method for polymer composite based optical fiber sensors

Abstract:Abstract Optical fiber (OF) sensors are critical optical devices with excellent sensing capabilities and the capacity to operate in remote and hostile environments. However, integrating functional materials and micro/nanostructures into the optical fiber systems for specific sensing applications has limitations of compatibility, readiness, poor control, robustness, and cost-effectiveness. Herein, we have demonstrated the fabrication and integration of stimuli-responsive optical fiber probe sensors using a novel, low-cost, and facile 3D printing process. Thermal stimulus–response of thermochromic pigment micro-powders was integrated with optical fibers by incorporating them into ultraviolet-sensitive transparent polymer resins and then printed via a single droplet 3D printing process. Hence, the thermally active polymer composite fibers were grown (additively manufactured) on top of the commercial optical fiber tips. Then, the thermal response was studied within the temperature range of (25–35 °C) and (25–31 °C) for unicolor and dual color pigment powders-based fiber-tip sensors, respectively. The unicolor (with color to colorless transition) and dual color (with color to color transition) powders-based sensors exhibited substantial variations in transmission and reflection spectra by reversibly increasing and decreasing temperatures. The sensitivities were calculated from the transmission spectra where average change in transmission spectra was recorded as 3.5% with every 1 °C for blue, 3% for red and 1% for orange-yellow thermochromic powders based optical fiber tip sensors. Our fabricated sensors are cost-effective, reusable, and flexible in terms of materials and process parameters. Thus, the fabrication process can potentially develop transparent and tunable thermochromic sensors for remote sensing with a much simpler manufacturing process compared to conventional and other 3D printing processes for optical fiber sensors. Moreover, this process can integrate micro/nanostructures as patterns on the optical fiber tips to increase sensitivity. The developed sensors may be employed as remote temperature sensors in biomedical and healthcare applications.

Abstract:MCNO flexible thermistors have been fabricated on polyethylene terephthalate or polyimide sheets by RF magnetron sputtering method at room temperature. The whole fabricating processes have been done at room temperature. The temperature coefficient of resistance is -3.1% and resistivity as low as 110Ωcm at 295K. Due to the heat-treat free process, high TCR and moderate resistivity features, the technique we provide here allows a convenient and low cost industrial manufacture of high performance flexible thermistors and wide band infrared detectors.

Abstract:Smart window technology offers significant energy-saving potential while maintaining aesthetics. However, existing responsive materials for smart windows either require power to function or suffer from oxidation and durability issues. The proposed system introduces a new category of thermochromic smart materials with superior environmental stability compared with conventional thermochromic materials such as vanadium dioxide (VO2) and water-rich hydrogels. Moreover, this polymer film can be easily synthesized and applied to large-area panels without any hassle or tinting effects.
