Abstract:Pollution of air is among the serious issue that the world is confronting today in developed and developing countries. An escalating numberof automobiles and industries incessantly add toxic gases like SO2, NOx, and particulate matter into the atmosphere. Simultaneously,secondary pollutant tropospheric O3 formed by the reactions of primary pollutant is equally hazardous. Suspension of these contaminantsin air leads to damaging effects on human health and plant productivity and results in the degradation of ecosystems and biodiversity.Human health issues associated with pollutants in air include cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, nervous and reproductive systemdisorders, lowered life expectancy, and mutations. Moreover, air pollutants negatively affect different morphological and physiologicalcharacteristics of the plants. Air pollutants generate reactive oxygen species that negatively affect various physiological pathways inthe plants inducing their anti-oxidative defense system to counteract oxidative stress. Air pollutants are also accountable for injury tovegetation and losses in crop productivity which is an increased cause of concern. Hence considering the air pollution menace, effectiveregulations, policies, and strategies should be developed for good human health, agricultural production, and food security.

Abstract:Accumulation of toxic substances in biosphere negatively affects the structure and function of natural ecosystem. With progress in technology, diverse array of pollutants are rapidly being added to the atmosphere by mankind without understanding their fate in nature. Therefore, it becomes essential to analyze the impact of these pollutants on organisms. It is important to understand the effect of these pollutants on plants from where it is transferred to next members of food chain ultimately affecting the mankind. Various physiological and biochemical processes such as gaseous exchange, photosynthesis, respiration, and protein synthesis are known to be affected by air pollutants. Plants respond to these abiotic stress situations by activating the stress signals leading to various physiological, genetic, and metabolic changes. This chapter highlights the effect of variety of air pollutants on plant health and activation of antioxidant system as a defense mechanism.

Abstract:For urban ecosystem, the understanding of plant responses and behavioral pattern to prevailing stresses is critical. This study aims to evaluate the reproductive behavior of 40 roadside plants, including trees, shrubs, and herbs, to higher air pollution load for three successive years (i.e.—2017, 2018, and 2019) in an Indo-gangetic urban sprawl. The mean surface concentration of three gaseous pollutants (O 3 , NO 2 , and SO 2 ) and one particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 1 μm (PM 1 ) was found to be highest at the polluted sites during all seasons. Though, there is no prescribed national standard for total atmospheric deposition; but, it was found significantly higher in all the seasons at the urban sites. According to obtained results, the natural pollen viabilities in all the plant species decreased to 10% significantly earlier at the urban sites. The seed numbers, weight, viability, and in-vivo germinations were also reduced significantly under higher air pollution load. The K-means cluster including all obtained data demonstrated a major group of 36 plants followed by two out groups of 2 plants each. Exceptionally, few plants, such as M. indica, R. communis, S. sisymbrifolium, M. azedarach, H. indicum, J. gossypifolia, S. tora, A. indicum, and C. gigantea , showed improved or unaffected responses in some of the reproductive parameters under higher air pollution load. Altogether, the obtained responses of all these plant species might be useful to understand the reproductive strategies, and can be utilized towards screening of effective species for sustainable urban green space development.

Abstract:An increasing need of nanotechnology in various industries may cause a huge environment dispersion of nanoparticles in coming years. A concern about nanoparticles interaction with flora and fauna is raised due to a growing load of it in the environment. In recent years, several investigators have shown impact of nanoparticles on plant growth and their accumulation in food source. This review examines the research performed in the last decade to show how metal and metal oxide nanoparticles are influencing the plant metabolism. We addressed here, the impact of nanoparticle on plant in relation to its size, concentration, and exposure methodology. Based on the available reports, we proposed oxidative burst as a general mechanism through which the toxic effects of nanoparticles are spread in plants. This review summarizes the current understanding and the future possibilities of plant-nanoparticle research.

Abstract:Recently, environmental pollution has become a serious concern worldwide. In this modern era, more Urbanization and Industrialization have led to the wide distribution of pollutants such as toxic chemicals, pesticides, petroleum products, and heavy metals in natural resources like water, soil, and air. Thus, it adversely affects plants and human beings. Currently, many heavy metals present in the environment in large amount like Cadmium, Lead, Arsenic, Mercury, and Nickel which cause a severe global environmental concern. They are more toxic to plants and human beings, as they mix with soil, they cause retardation in plant growth, reduce the nutritive value, affect photosynthesis, and also heavy metals pose harmful effects on human beings. In this review, we have summarized the adverse effect of heavy metals that alter plants' morphology, affects the germination of seeds, and growth of plants and summarized the effects of heavy metals on the humans which ultimately affects the human health.

Abstract:Humans face threats from air pollutants present in both indoor and outdoor environments. The emerging role of plants in remediating the atmospheric environment is now being actively investigated as a possible solution for this problem. Foliar surfaces of plants (e.g., the leaves of cotton) can absorb a variety of airborne pollutants (e.g., formaldehyde, benzene, trimethylamine, and xylene), thereby reducing their concentrations in indoor environments. Recently, theoretical and experimental studies have been conducted to offer better insights into the interactions between plants and the surrounding air. In our research, an overview on the role of plants in reducing air pollution (often referred to as phytoremediation) is provided based on a comprehensive literature survey. The major issues for plant-based research for the reduction of air pollution in both outdoor and indoor environments are discussed in depth along with future challenges. Analysis of the existing data confirms the effectiveness of phytoremediation in terms of the absorption and purification of pollutants (e.g., by the leaves and roots of plants and trees), while being controlled by different variables (e.g., pore characteristics and planting patterns). Although most lab-scale studies have shown that plants can effectively absorb pollutants, it is important for such studies to reflect the real-world conditions, especially with the influence of human activities. Under such conditions, pollutants are to be replenished continually while the plant surface area to ambient atmosphere volume ratio vastly decreases (e.g., relative to lab-based experiments). The replication of such experimental conditions is the key challenge in this field of research. This review is expected to offer valuable insights into the innate ability of various plants in removing diverse pollutants (such as formaldehyde, benzene, and particulate matter) under different environmental settings.

Abstract:In today’s global context, the escalation of air pollution stands out as an immensely critical environmental challenge that has attained a worldwide magnitude. This pressing issue not only impacts every living organism on our planet but is also intricately linked to the phenomenon of climate change. The significant increase in vehicular traffic, rapid urbanization, and infrastructure development have indirectly contributed to a higher concentration of harmful gaseous and particulate pollutants in the atmosphere, posing serious risks to human health. Extensive research has thoroughly documented the adverse effects of these air pollutants, with mortality and morbidity rates varying depending on the type of pollutant and the duration of exposure. However, amidst this crisis, green plants emerge as a cost-effective and promising solution to combat environmental pollution, presenting several additional benefits. Specifically, pollutiontolerant plant species are crucial in reducing ambient air pollution and the urban heat island effect. To assess a plant’s tolerance towards air pollution, experts use the air pollution tolerance index (APTI), which calculates crucial factors such as ascorbic acid, total chlorophyll, pH, and relative water content in the plant. This determination provides a reliable method for categorizing plants into either tolerant or sensitive types in the face of air pollution. Moreover, the morphological characteristics of leaves, such as stomata distribution and density, cuticle thickness, and trichome density, play an essential role in adsorbing and absorbing particulate matter from the air. These inherent qualities further enhance plants’ potential to combat air pollution in a sustainable manner, making them valuable assets for the future. In light of this, the present review highlights the impressive capacity of plants to remediate air pollutants and explores the various strategies employed in this crucial endeavor. By leveraging the remarkable capabilities of green plants, we have the opportunity to address the air pollution crisis and embrace a sustainable path for the times to come. These remarkable organisms could be the sustainable saviors we need to protect our environment and secure a healthier future for all.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: In the words of the World Health Organization, air pollution is dened as contamination of the domestic or outdoor environment by chemical, physical, or biological pollutants that have an adverse effect on the natural components of the atmosphere. The consequence could be adverse health effects that could be sub-clinical or overt. Despite these, little is known about the health impact of urban air pollution at the cellular and sub-cellular levels among people residing in the Indian mega cities. Against this background, this literature review is being conducted in order to identify ways for reducing environmental pollution and the effects on the body. METHODS:An extensive search of all materials related to the topic was carried out in PubMed, Medline, World Health Organization website and Google Scholar search engines. Relevant documents, reports, research articles focusing on the air pollution and its impact on health published in the period 1992 to 2021 were included in the review. A total of 49 articles on our topic were included in this study. RESULTS: In this review article we discussed about the distribution and multiple determinants of respiratory diseases caused by the air pollutants, its sources and pathogenesis of the diseases. CONCLUSION: People today are constantly exposed to outdoor air pollution causing increased respiratory morbidity and mortality. The continuous health education on air pollution and personal protective measures at regular intervals is mandatory to improve respiratory health. The impact of adherence, change in behaviour and lifestyle modication helps in signicantly reducing the exposure, symptoms and respiratory health among people.

The Science of The Total Environment

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) pollution is one of the pressing environmental concerns confronting human civilization in the face of the Anthropocene era. Plants are continuously exposed to an accelerating PM, threatening their growth and productivity. Although plants and plant-based infrastructures can potentially reduce ambient air pollutants , PM still affects them morphologically, anatomically, and physiologically. This review comprehensively summarizes an up-to-date review of plant-PM interaction among different functional plant groups, PM deposition and penetration through aboveground and belowground plant parts, and plants' cellular strategies. Upon exposure, PM represses lipid desaturases, eventually leading to modification of cell wall and membrane and altering cell fluidity; consequently, plants can sense the pollutants and, thus, adapt different cellular strategies. The PM also causes a reduction in the photosynthetically active radiation. The study demonstrated that plants reduce stomatal density to avoid PM uptake and increase stomatal index to compensate for decreased gaseous exchange efficiency and transpiration rates. Furthermore, genes and gene sets associated with photosynthesis, glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, and the TCA cycle were dramatically lowered by PM stress. Several transcription factors, including MYB, C2H2, C3H, G2-like, and WRKY were induced, and metabolites such as proline and soluble sugar were accumulated to increase resistance against stressors. In addition, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants were also accumulated to scavenge the PM-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS). Taken together, this review provides an insight into plants' underlying cellular mechanisms and gene regulatory networks in response to the PM to determine strategies to preserve their structural and functional blend in the face of particulate pollution. The study concludes by recommending that future research should precisely focus on plants' response to short- and long-term PM exposure.

Abstract:Nine out of 10 people breathe air that does not meet World Health Organization pollution limits. Air pollutants include gasses and particulate matter and collectively are responsible for ~8 million annual deaths. Particulate matter is the most dangerous form of air pollution, causing inflammatory and oxidative tissue damage. A deeper understanding of the physiological effects of particulate matter is needed for effective disease prevention and treatment. This review will summarize the impact of particulate matter on physiological systems, and where possible will refer to apposite epidemiological and toxicological studies. By discussing a broad cross-section of available data, we hope this review appeals to a wide readership and provides some insight on the impacts of particulate matter on human health.

Abstract:The wet (rain, snow, fog, sleet, dew) and dry (transport of aerosol, particles and gases) deposition of acidic substance in environment results due to human, automobile, fossil fuel burning and industrial activities. Acid deposition is worldwide environmental degradation problems and in recent years these acidic materials are increasing at alarming scale in the environment both in developed and developing countries, including Pakistan. Some scientific literature survey reports suggest that plant growth and agriculture yield decrease due to consequence of acid rain. In addition, acid rain is found responsible for producing toxic effects on the morphological parameters of agricultural crop. The evidence collected from last more than fifty years showed the common significant effects of acid rain on seed germination percentage, seedling height, root hair and structure, alteration in leaf anatomy, size and area, stomatal structure, size, pollen germination, photosynthetic pigments and physiological changes in herbs, shrubs and trees. Still, little is known on the impact of acid rain on plant growth. This study was aimed to review the effects of acid mist on growth performances of some selected plant species. This review is contributed with the help of literature survey, research work published on the impact of acid rain on the plant growth.

Abstract:With substantial effects on human health, air pollution has become a major global concern. Air pollution has been linked to numerous gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases with increasing mortalities. The gut and respiratory dysbiosis brought about by air pollution has recently received much attention. This review attempts to provide an overview of the types of air pollutants, their sources, their impact on the respiratory and gut dysbiotic patterns and their correlation with five major diseases including pneumonia, asthma, COPD, lung cancer and irritable bowel syndrome. Deeper insights into the links between pollutants, dysbiosis and disease may pave the way for novel diagnostic biomarkers for prognosis and early detection of these diseases, as well as ways to ease the disease burden.

Numerous empirical studies have demonstrated that street trees not only reduce dust pollution and absorb particulate matter (PM) but also improve microclimates, providing both ecological functions and aesthetic value. However, recent research has revealed that street tree canopy cover can impede the dispersion of atmospheric PM within street canyons, leading to the accumulation of street pollutants. Although many studies have investigated the impact of street trees on air pollutant dispersion within street canyons, the extent of their influence remains unclear and uncertain. Pollutant accumulation corresponds to the specific characteristics of individual street canyons, coupled with meteorological factors and pollution source strength. Notably, the characteristics of street tree canopy cover also exert a significant influence. There is still a quantitative research gap on street tree cover impacts with respect to pollution and dust reduction control measures within street spaces. To improve urban traffic environments, policymakers have mainly focused on scientifically based street vegetation deployment initiatives in building ecological garden cities and improving the living environment. To address uncertainties regarding the influence of street trees on the dispersion of atmospheric PM in urban streets, this study reviews dispersion mechanisms and key atmospheric PM factors in urban streets, summarizes the research approaches used to conceptualize atmospheric PM dispersion in urban street canyons, and examines urban plant efficiency in reducing atmospheric PM. Furthermore, we also address current challenges and future directions in this field to provide a more comprehensive understanding of atmospheric PM dispersion in urban streets and the role that street trees play in mitigating air pollution.

Abstract:Airborne particles (dust pollution) pose a significant threat to both human and plant populations. Plant leaves act as crucial biofilters, capturing significant amounts of air pollution; this characteristic offers a valuable tool to measure local pollution levels and assess individual plant species' ability to intercept and mitigate harmful dust particles. The present study was carried out to asses the effect of responses of various plant species to dust pollution near and around the marble mining site comprising residential site, highway area, and Central University of Rajasthan as control. The anticipated pollution index, air pollution tolerance index (APTI), dust absorption capacity, metal accumulation index (MAI), and biochemical factors were used to evaluate plant responses. Azadirachta indica A. Juss. demonstrated the highest (29.0) and Vachellia nilotica L. showed lowest (5.6) APTI, respectively. A. indica showed maximum MAI values in comparison to other plant species situated at residential site. Additionally, monitoring of particulate matter (PM 10 ) observed to highest at highway, followed by mining, residential, and control sites. Overall A. indica representing highest APTI and effective dust capturing capacity at all sites could serve as potential pollution sinks. V. nilotica , with its very low APTI, can be marked as biomonitoring tool for detecting dust pollution.

Abstract:Plants act as the primary barrier to atmospheric pollution. Thus, while considering the role of plants in restricting air pollutants, one of the environmental tools used to assess tolerant plant species is the Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI). We conducted a study in Delhi during the pre-and post-monsoon seasons at polluted (Nehru Nagar) and non-polluted (Pusa Road) sites to assess the site-specific and seasonal variation of biochemical parameters (ascorbic, pH, relative water content, and chlorophyll) and APTI. Two-way ANOVA, Pearson's test, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were performed for the statistical analysis. Also, a detailed meta-analysis of biochemical parameter and their influence on APTI based on published literature in metropolitan cities of India has been performed. The study conducted in Delhi at a non-polluted site found higher APTI in the pre-monsoon than post-monsoon season. In addition, the maximum ascorbic acid content of 2.47 mg/g ( Azadirachta indica A.Juss) and 1.37 mg/g ( Ficus benjamina L) was reported at polluted and non-polluted sites, respectively, during pre-monsoon. The detailed meta-analysis of published literature revealed that plants' chlorophyll and ascorbic acid content were more at polluted sites than at non-polluted sites and substantially impacted APTI calculation. Linear regression showed a significant correlation of ascorbic acid ( Mangifera indica L, R 2 = 0.9670) and chlorophyll content ( Polyalthia longifolia (Sonn), R 2 = 0.958) with APTI. Also, in the PCA test, measured characteristics of different species were strongly correlated, with 72.55% of overall variability. Furthermore, the meta-analysis revealed the average APTI of the plants in the following order Ficus benghalensis L > Polyalthia longifolia > M.indica > A. indica > Delonix regia (Boj. ex Hook) > Ficus religiosa L. A substantial seasonal, site-specific variation and statistically significant differences in the biochemical parameters of plants were observed. These results could be used to classify plant species as air pollution sinks and bioindicators.

Abstract:It is well accepted that particulate matter (PM) can affect human health detrimentally. Chronic and prolonged exposures to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ranging between 2.5 and 10 microns (PM10), 0.1 and 2.5 microns (PM2.5) and less than 0.1 microns in size (UFPM), have been associated with cardiopulmonary diseases. PM is ubiquitously present in urban settings, while primarily absent in forest environments primarily due to the direct interception of airborne pollution particles by trees. Both short- and long-term exposure to trees in forested environments is associated with lower blood pressure and inflammation, as well as enhanced immune function. Additionally, exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) actively released by trees is associated with improved health through enhanced natural killer cell activity, reduced inflammatory responses, and reduced psychological stress. This article presents the results of a literature review on the harmful health effects of air pollution in urban environments, and the potential of forested environments to promote health and disease prevention.

These pollutants also have an effect on human health because they affect the consistency of the air we breathe. They usually cause inflammation in the upper respiratory tract, resulting in cough and shortness of breath. These are also significant contributors to the exacerbation of current respiratory conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Epidemiological, toxicological, and clinical research all support the connection between air pollution and increased incidence and severity of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. This pollution is a major public health problem in the locations where maximum pollution sources exist. To improve air quality and reduce the adverse effects of airborne toxicity due to AAP on human health, significant approaches are needed. The main objective of this review article is to provide evidence on the adverse effects of AAP on human health, as well as to make recommendations to policymakers on how to minimize exposure to this risk factor. Only public awareness combined with a multidisciplinary approach by scientific specialists will be able to handle this problem; national and international organizations must address the rise of this threat and suggest long-term remedies.

Abstract:This review summarized the recent research progress on the health effects of traffic-related air pollution, including the effects on the respiratory system, cardiovascular system, nervous system, reproductive system, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. Joint effects of traffic-related air pollutants with other factors as well as the health benefits evaluation of traffic-related air pollution control were introduced. Prospectives of the future studies were also pointed out in this review.

Abstract:The effects of air pollution on physio-biochemical characteristics of three street trees of Platanus hispanica,Pterocarya stenoptera and Ligustrum lucidum were studied in this paper.The results showed that the net photosynthetic rate(Pn),stomatal conductance(Gs),intercellular CO2 concentration(Ci),transpiration rate(Tr),water utilization efficiency(WUE),and the content of chlorophyll and soluble sugar in leaves of three species under the air-polluted condition were less than those in control,while vapor pressure deficit at the leaf surface(Vpdl),membrane permeability,Chlorophylla/b,free praline,and malondialdehyde(MDA) in the air-polluted environment were greater compared with the control.By the subordinate function values it was found that the anti-pollution ability of Platanus hispanica was lower than Ligustrum Lucidum but greater than Pterocarya stenoptera.
