Abstract:This perspective summarizes the research progress of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials used in lithium-ion battery/lithium-metal electrolytes. By summarizing several long-standing defects of lithium-ion batteries/lithiummetal batteries, MOFs materials are subsequently used as ion sieves, artificial electrode protective layers, quasi-solid electrolytes and used to adjust electrolytes' configuration, the performance of batteries has been significantly improved. Finally, based on the characteristics of MOFs materials themselves, this perspective also makes a reasonable forward-looking outlook on the subsequent applications of MOFs materials in the field of electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported as promising materials for various electrochemical applications owing to their tunable porous structures and ion‐sieving capability. However, it remains challenging to rationally design high‐performance MOF‐based electrolytes for high‐energy lithium batteries. Herein, by combining advanced characterization and modeling tools, we designed a series of nanocrystalline MOFs and systematically studied the effects of pore apertures and open metal sites on ion‐transport properties and electrochemical stability of MOF quasi‐solid‐state electrolytes. We demonstrate that MOFs with non‐redox‐active metal centers can lead to much wider electrochemical stability window than those with redox‐active centers. Furthermore, our results suggest that pore aperture of MOFs is a dominating factor that determines the uptake of lithium salt and thus ionic conductivity. The ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations further demonstrate that open metal sites of MOFs can facilitate the dissociation of lithium salt and immobilize anions via Lewis acid–base interaction, leading to good lithium‐ion mobility and high transference number. Such host–guest interaction was further quantitatively studied by cluster‐model DFT calculations at the atomic level, which was confirmed by X‐ray absorption near edge structure analysis. Besides, the vehicle‐type ion conduction mechanism in MOFs were revealed by AIMD simulations and solid‐state NMR results. Benefiting from good electrochemical stability and thin/dense structure, the MOF quasi‐solid‐state electrolyte demonstrates excellent battery performance with commercial LiFePO4 cathodes (>500 cycles at 0.5 C) and LiCoO2 cathodes (up to 4.6 V) at 30°C. This work provides new insights into structure‐property relationships between tunable structure and electrochemical properties of MOFs that can lead to the development of advanced quasi‐solid‐state electrolytes for high‐energy lithium batteries. Abstract:The development and application of high-capacity energy storage has been crucial to the global transition from fossil fuels to green energy. In this context, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), with their unique 3D porous structure and tunable chemical functionality, have shown enormous potential as energy storage materials for accommodating or transporting electrochemically active ions. In this perspective, we specifically focus on the current status and prospects of anionic MOF-based quasi-solid-state-electrolytes (anionic MOF-QSSEs) for lithium metal batteries (LMBs). An overview of the definition, design, and properties of anionic MOF-QSSEs is provided, including recent advances in the understanding of their ion transport mechanism. To illustrate the advantages of using anionic MOF-QSSEs as electrolytes for LMBs, a thorough comparison between anionic MOF-QSSEs and other well-studied electrolyte systems is made. With these in-depth understandings, viable techniques for tuning the chemical and topological properties of anionic MOF-QSSEs to increase Li+ conductivity are discussed. Beyond modulation of the MOFs matrix, we envisage that solvent and solid–electrolyte interphase design as well as emerging fabrication techniques will aid in the design and practical application of anionic MOF-QSSEs.

Herein, a systematic investigation of twelve Zr(IV)-based UiO-66 MOFs with varying ether-chain functional groups was carried out to elucidate the critical microscopic interactions that facilitate improved solid-state electrolyte performance. Enhanced sampling molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed and revealed a three-tier ion hopping mechanism: linker-linker hopping, linker-counterion hopping, and counterion-counterion hopping. Detailed structural analysis of the MD trajectories revealed that the chemistry and morphology of the linker groups affects the relative stability and population distribution of the electrolyte components, such that crown-ether based linker groups enhances the probability of extended, low-barrier ion percolation pathways. As a result, we were able to tune the ion conductivities by means of rationally manipulating the counterion distributions, linker binding strengths, and the configurational entropy (multi-variability of the linkers). The resulting performance of these MOF-based solid-state electrolytes was significantly enhanced, with a methoxy-functionalized framework (UiO-66-L1-100) achieving high ionic conductivities of 2.32 × 10^-4 S/cm and 2.07 × 10^-3 S/cm at 30 °C and 90 °C, respectively, a magnitude greater than other all-solid-state MOF electrolyte systems. The electrolyte stability was evaluated with LiIn|LPSCl|MOF:LiTFSI|LPSCl|LiIn symmetric cells, showing excellent Li plating/stripping processes for over 2 months.

Abstract:MOF-808-based solid-state electrolytes demonstrated outstanding ionic conductivity, with a value of 3.08×10-3 S cm-1 at 25oC, high lithium-ion transference number of 0.77, and wide potential window ranging from 1.5 to 4.8 V. MOF-808-based lithium-ion batteries were put through 300 cycles of charging and discharging, retention rate of 98%.

Abstract:The design criteria for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been established by evaluating the relationship between their key characteristics and magnesium-ion conductivity based on three types of secondary building blocks (Zn 4 O(CO 2 ) 6 : MOF-5 and MOF-177; Cu 2 (CO 2 ) 4 : MOF-199, MOF-143, MOF-14, and MOF-399; Cu 2 O 2 (CO 2 ) 2 : Cu-MOF-74) to achieve pseudo-solid-state magnesium-ion conduction. We found that open-metal sites and channel layouts play a pivotal role in promoting magnesium-ion transport dynamics at reduced activation energy, transforming MOF scaffolds into ionic-channel analogs. X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with Raman and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy predicted the chemical environment, solvents, and anions that occupied coordinatively unsaturated metal sites. The chemical compositions of electrolytes determined by 1 H-NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) and organic elemental analysis confirmed that isoreticular expansion increases the molar percentage of charge carriers, providing high conductivity. The current research systematically reveals the impacts of different MOF characteristics on ionic conduction performance, paving the way for the construction of a new class of fast and selective multivalent-ion pseudo-solid electrolytes.

Abstract:The use of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) has received widespread attention in the modern world. SSEs can be divided into different types, some of which can be combined with MOFs to improve the electrochemical performance of the battery by taking advantage of the high surface area and high porosity of MOFs. The use of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) has been a very attractive research area that has received widespread attention in the modern world. SSEs can be divided into different types, some of which can be combined with MOFs to improve the electrochemical performance of the batteries by taking advantage of the high surface area and high porosity of MOFs. However, it also faces many serious problems and challenges. In this review, different types of SSEs are classified and the changes in these electrolytes after the addition of MOFs are described. Afterward, these SSEs with MOFs attached are introduced for different types of battery applications and the effects of these SSEs combined with MOFs on the electrochemical performance of the cells are described. Finally, some challenges faced by MOFs materials in batteries applications are presented, then some solutions to the problems and development expectations of MOFs are given.

Abstract:To fulfill the growing energy demands, electrochemical energy storage (EES) technologies have played a pivotal role in the field of renewable energy storage and power supply. Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have attracted great attention due to their unique porous structure and associated multifunctional properties. During the processing of MOF materials to obtain the corresponding derivative materials, heterogeneous elements are introduced as mediators and influence the structure and properties of the final obtained materials. This review focuses recent research progress in the field of EES based on heterogeneous elements doped MOF derivatives (H-MOFs), and proposes the heterogeneous element doping and design synthesis strategies in the construction of H-MOFs. The application of H-MOFs in alkali metal batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, supercapacitors, and other devices were systematically summarized, and the mechanism of its performance enhancement was analyzed. Finally, the current status, possible deficiencies and unresolved issues are pointed out, and future research directions and contents are discussed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives are two developing families of functional materials for energy storage and conversion. Their high porosity, versatile functionalities, diverse structures, and controllable chemical compositions offer immense possibilities in the search for adequate electrode materials for rechargeable batteries. Despite these advantageous features, MOFs and their derivatives as electrode materials face various challenging issues, which impede their practical applications. From this perspective, we present both the opportunities and challenges that MOFs/MOF composites and MOF-derived materials bring to rechargeable batteries, including lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, lithium-oxygen batteries, and sodium-ion batteries. By discussing the development of MOFs/MOF composites and MOF-derived materials in each battery system, some design principles that dominate the specific electrochemical behaviors are outlined, with the key requirements that a practical electrode should fulfill. At the end, a basic guidance and future directions for further development are provided.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials with unprecedented chemical and structural tunability. Their synthetic versatility, long-range order, and rich host–guest chemistry make MOFs ideal platforms for identifying design features for advanced functional materials. This review addresses synthetic approaches to control MOF attributes for realizing material properties such as charge conductivity, stability, surface area, and flexibility. Along with an updated account on MOFs employed in batteries and supercapacitors, new directions are outlined for advancing MOF research in emergent technologies such as solid-state electrolytes and battery operation in extreme environments.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of crystalline porous organic polymers with periodic networks that are constructed from small molecular units via covalent bonds, which have low densities, high porosity, large specific surface area, and ease of functionalization. The one-dimension nanochannels in COFs offer an effective means of transporting lithium ions while maintaining a stable structure over a wide range of temperatures. As a new category of ionic conductors, COFs exhibit unparalleled application potential in solid-state electrolytes. Here, we provide a comprehensive summary of recent applications and research progress for COFs in solid-state electrolytes of lithium metal batteries and discuss the possible development directions in the future. This review is expected to provide theoretical guidance for the design of high-performance solid-state electrolytes.

Abstract:Solid-state electrolytes are the key to the development of lithium-based batteries with dramatically improved energy density and safety. Inspired by ionic channels in biological systems, a novel class of pseudo solid-state electrolytes with biomimetic ionic channels is reported herein. This is achieved by complexing the anions of an electrolyte to the open metal sites of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which transforms the MOF scaffolds into ionic-channel analogs with lithium-ion conduction and low activation energy. This work suggests the emergence of a new class of pseudo solid-state lithium-ion conducting electrolytes.

Abstract:This review article deals with advanced solid electrolyte membranes comprising of Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and Covalent‐organic frameworks (COFs) for energy storage application in lithium batteries. MOFs and COFs have emerged as promising candidates due to their organized porous structure and unique properties. They offer potential benefits such as improved ion transport, mechanical stability, and safety in lithium battery systems. We have discussed the recent progress in integrating MOFs and COFs as solid electrolyte membranes, highlighting their advantages, challenges, and future perspectives. Lithium batteries have been widely utilized in wide‐ranging electronic devices, from smartphones to electric vehicles. This review explores a new area of advanced materials for energy storage application, especially focusing on solid electrolyte membranes for lithium battery. To enhance the overall performance of lithium batteries, researchers are studying solid electrolyte membranes, aiming to overcome the limitations of liquid electrolytes and other traditional membranes. Recently, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent‐organic frameworks (COFs) exhibit promising characteristics due to their highly organized porous nature and structural properties. These frameworks hold significant potential as a viable component for lithium battery systems, especially in advanced separator/electrolyte setups. Because of their adjustable structural design, MOFs and COFs have the capacity to enhance battery performance by facilitating ion movement, providing superior mechanical stability, and safety. This review provides insight into the recent progress achieved by integrating MOFs and COFs into solid electrolyte membranes for lithium batteries, highlighting their potential advantages, associated challenges, and future research avenues.

Abstract:The low ionic conductivity of quasi-solid-state electrolytes (QSSEs) at ambient temperature is a barrier to the development of solid-state batteries (SSBs). Conversely, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with porous structure and metal sites show great potential for the fabrication of QSSEs. Numerous studies have proven that the structure and functional groups of MOFs could significantly impact the ionic conductivity of QSSEs based on MOFs (MOFs-QSSEs). This review introduces the transport mechanism of lithium ions in various MOFs-QSSEs, and then analyses how to construct an effective and consistent lithium ions pathway from the perspective of MOFs modification. It is shown that the ion conductivity could be enhanced by modifying the morphology and functional groups, as well as applying amorphous MOFs. Lastly, some issues and future perspectives for MOFs-QSSEs are examined. The primary objective of this review is to enhance the comprehension of the mechanisms and performance optimization methods of MOFs-QSSEs. Consequently, this would guide the design and synthesis of QSSEs with high ionic conductivity, and ultimately enhance the performance of commercial SSBs.
