Abstract:To fulfill the growing energy demands, electrochemical energy storage (EES) technologies have played a pivotal role in the field of renewable energy storage and power supply. Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have attracted great attention due to their unique porous structure and associated multifunctional properties. During the processing of MOF materials to obtain the corresponding derivative materials, heterogeneous elements are introduced as mediators and influence the structure and properties of the final obtained materials. This review focuses recent research progress in the field of EES based on heterogeneous elements doped MOF derivatives (H-MOFs), and proposes the heterogeneous element doping and design synthesis strategies in the construction of H-MOFs. The application of H-MOFs in alkali metal batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, supercapacitors, and other devices were systematically summarized, and the mechanism of its performance enhancement was analyzed. Finally, the current status, possible deficiencies and unresolved issues are pointed out, and future research directions and contents are discussed.

Abstract:As emerging crystalline porous organic-inorganic hybrid materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used as sacrificial precursors for the synthesis of carbon materials, metal/metal compounds, and their composites with tunable and controllable nanostructures and chemical compositions for electrochemical energy applications. Herein, recent progress of MOF-derived nanomaterials for various electrochemical energy storage and conversion applications including Li-ion batteries, Li-S batteries, Na-ion batteries, supercapacitors, water splitting, and oxygen reduction reaction is reviewed. Structural and compositional design of MOF-derived nanomaterials is systematically summarized, which may hopefully offer inspirations and guidances for future development of MOF-derived nanomaterials for more efficient and more durable electrochemical energy applications.

Abstract:Energy shortage hinders the rapid development of today's society, and the emergence of electronic travel equipment alleviates this phenomenon to a certain extent. The batteries are the energy storage part of electric equipment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a fresh sort of porous crystal materials with controllable structure, large specific surface area, and adjustable pore size. MOFs are good electrode materials, which are used to make a variety of friendly environment, long cycling life and superior energy density of new batteries. Furthermore, MOFs are also used in separators and electrolytes, which have a lot of application space in batteries. In this review, the up-to-date research advance of MOF materials in various kinds of batteries (lithium-ion batteries, lithium oxygen batteries, lithium sulfur batteries, zinc-ion batteries, potassium-ion batteries, etc.) is reviewed. Moreover, concisely introduced several conventional synthesis approaches of MOFs. Finally, Perspectives and directions on the future improvement of MOF in energy storage devices are proposed for meeting the requirement of practical applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show great promise for electrochemical energy storage applications due to their high surface area, tunable porosity, ordered crystal structure, and facile tolerability. However, some MOFs with high electrochemical performance are usually unstable in aqueous solutions, which limits their develop-ment in aqueous electrochemical energy storage systems, which are cheaper, safer, and more ionically conductive than those operating in conventional organic electrolytes. Numerous efforts have been made to construct stable MOFs or control MOF derivation processes induced by chemical or thermal forces to optimize their properties and performance. Therefore, a review summarizing the MOFs applied in aqueous electro-chemical energy storage devices would be useful. In this review, the chemical stability and thermal stability of MOFs under aqueous conditions are discussed. The evolution processes of MOFs when they exceed their stability are summarized. Furthermore, the recent fast-growing literature on MOF-based aqueous ion batteries and supercapacitors is comprehensively reviewed, and guidelines for designing high-performance aqueous electro-chemical devices are provided. The current challenges and opportunities for applying MOFs in aqueous elec-trochemical energy-storage devices are provided. We hope this review will promote the development of MOFs in aqueous electrochemical devices by exploiting the advantages and remedying the disadvantages of MOFs.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials with unprecedented chemical and structural tunability. Their synthetic versatility, long-range order, and rich host–guest chemistry make MOFs ideal platforms for identifying design features for advanced functional materials. This review addresses synthetic approaches to control MOF attributes for realizing material properties such as charge conductivity, stability, surface area, and flexibility. Along with an updated account on MOFs employed in batteries and supercapacitors, new directions are outlined for advancing MOF research in emergent technologies such as solid-state electrolytes and battery operation in extreme environments.

Abstract:This perspective summarizes the research progress of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials used in lithium-ion battery/lithium-metal electrolytes. By summarizing several long-standing defects of lithium-ion batteries/lithiummetal batteries, MOFs materials are subsequently used as ion sieves, artificial electrode protective layers, quasi-solid electrolytes and used to adjust electrolytes' configuration, the performance of batteries has been significantly improved. Finally, based on the characteristics of MOFs materials themselves, this perspective also makes a reasonable forward-looking outlook on the subsequent applications of MOFs materials in the field of electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:As modern society develops, the need for clean energy becomes increasingly important on a global scale. Because of this, the exploration of novel materials for energy storage and utilization is urgently needed to achieve low-carbon economy and sustainable development. Among these novel materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of porous materials, have gained increasing attention for utilization in energy storage and conversion systems because of ultra-high surface areas, controllable structures, large pore volumes and tunable porosities. In addition to pristine MOFs, MOF derivatives such as porous carbons and nanostructured metal oxides can also exhibit promising performances in energy storage and conversion applications. In this review, the latest progress and breakthrough in the application of MOF and MOF-derived materials for energy storage and conversion devices are summarized, including Li-based batteries (Li-ion, Li–S and Li–O2 batteries), Na-ion batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells and fuel cells.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Abstract Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have played a crucial role in recent advancements in developing lithium‐based battery electrolytes, electrodes, and separators. Although many MOF‐based battery components rely on their well‐defined porosity and controllable functionality, they also boast a myriad of other significant properties relevant to battery applications. In this mini‐review, the distinct advantages of MOFs in battery applications are discussed, including using MOFs to 1) scavenge impurities to increase cycling stability, 2) widen the operation temperature range of conventional electrolytes, 3) widen the operation voltage range of common electrolytes, and 4) employ as artificial solid‐electrolyte interphases to prevent lithium dendrite growth. Furthermore, subsisting challenges of developing these emerging MOF‐based battery technologies are discussed and guidance for shaping the future of this field is given.

Abstract:With many apparent advantages including high surface area, tunable pore sizes and topologies, and diverse periodic organic-inorganic ingredients, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been identified as versatile precursors or sacrificial templates for preparing functional materials as advanced electrodes or high-efficiency catalysts for electrochemical energy storage and conversion (EESC). In this Mini Review, we first briefly summarize the material design strategies to show the rich possibilities of the chemical compositions and physical structures of MOFs derivatives. We next highlight the latest advances focusing on the composition/structure/performance relationship and discuss their practical applications in various EESC systems, such as supercapacitors, rechargeable batteries, fuel cells, water electrolyzers, and carbon dioxide/nitrogen reduction reactions. Finally, we provide some of our own insights into the major challenges and prospective solutions of MOF-derived functional materials for EESC, hoping to shed some light on the future development of this highly exciting field.

Abstract:With the increasing industrial activities, the surge of population, rising global climate change concerns, as well as the increasing energy consumption and demands, traditional rechargeable batteries have started losing the capacity to meet the needs of current and future markets. In order to rise up to this challenge, the development of advanced, flexible and controllable energy technology has become the need of the hour. Development of electrochemical energy conversion and storage (EECS) technology is a potential way forward because of its high energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. One way to improve the efficiency of EECS devices is to focus on the development and improvement of their components, such as electrode materials, separators and catalysts. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have become an emerging class of crystalline materials in materials science and coordination chemistry due to their unique activity, interesting properties and tunable structures. Among various transition-metal based MOFs, iron (Fe)-based metal organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) have attracted special attention due to their excellent physicochemical properties and the abundance of iron. Herein, this article reviews the recent applications of Fe-MOFs and their derivatives in electrochemical energy conversion and storage. In this review, the synthesis methods of Fe-MOFs and their derivatives, energy storage applications of Fe-MOFs in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), supercapacitors (SCs), electrocatalysis and other batteries are discussed in detail. In addition, the achievements and challenges of Fe-MOFs and their derivatives in the fields of rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors and electrocatalysis are summarized. Furthermore, the possible innovative design principles and future prospects of Fe-MOFs and their derivatives as EECS materials are presented.

Abstract:The development of advanced functional materials is of great significance for applications in energy storage and conversion fields. Metal-organic framework (MOF) derived porous materials have attracted extensive attention due to their high porosity, complex components and controllable structures. Although considerable achievements have been made in the controllable synthesis of multifunctional MOF derivatives, their systematic synthesis and applications in new-style energy storage and conversion devices (e.g. sodium ion batteries, potassium ion batteries, zinc ion batteries and fuel cells) have rarely been reviewed in depth. Given that materials' structures are highly dependent on the particular synthetic strategy and determine the final physical and chemical performances, a comprehensive insight into the latest advances in complex MOF-derived porous materials is provided in this review. The versatile architectures of functional materials and their influences on properties are clearly summarized. The advantages of the MOF-derived route over traditional non-MOF methods are highlighted. In the end, the challenges and the prospective research direction of MOF-derived functional materials in energy storage and conversion fields are proposed. The strategy-structure-property relationships in this review will provide scientific evidence on the reasonable design of high-efficiency MOF-derived functional materials for new energy systems.

Abstract:Metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) are neo‐type porous materials synthesized via organic ligands and metal ions, which have drawn much attention due to their unparalleled advantages such as high specific surface area, large and clear pore structures, and uniformly distributed active sites. In these years, modified MOFs are regarded as kinds of materials with excellent electrochemical properties, that overcome poor conductivity and stability of original MOFs and narrow the gap between the basic science of MOFs and their future applications. At the same time, it also provides an opportunity to elaborate the synergistic effect of the synthesis strategy of modified MOFs on the performance. This review focuses on the synthesis, structure characterization, and electrochemical adhibition of modified MOFs and discusses the challenges and application prospects of modified MOFs in energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:In recent years, metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived functional materials have been extensively used in energy-related applications. Among such functional materials, MOF-derived metal oxides (MOs) are the most desirable ones. Such MOF-derived MOs not only enhance the surface area, but also improve the cycling stability in various energy storage devices. The diverse application of MOF has been extended through such MOF-derived MOs. Owing to their special characteristics, such MOs are considered to be the better version of the conventional MOs. In this review article, we discuss the electrochemical energy storage application of such MOF-derived monometallic, bimetallic, and trimetallic MOs. It is important to note that, the thermal conversion of multi-metallic MOFs can produce the corresponding mixed MOs. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on the synthetic approaches of the parent MOFs. In this aspect, a brief introduction of MOFs and their synthetic approaches are summarized. Moreover, the application of such MOs as the electrodes in supercapacitors and secondary batteries (mainly Li-ion batteries) are also discussed. The review article finishes with the existing drawbacks and future challenges of the MOF-derived MOs in energy-related applications.

Abstract:<p>Aqueous energy devices are under the spotlight of current research due to their safety, low cost and ease of handling. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives have spurred extensive exploration as they provide a library of new electrode materials. The rich and structural flexibilities (such as metal nodes, ligands, pore structure) endow MOFs and MOFs-derivatives with vast opportunities for various energy devices. In this review, we discuss the correlation between MOF structural parameters and electrochemical performance for aqueous energy devices in the scope of zinc-based batteries (Zn-ion, Zn-alkaline and Zn-air batteries), potassium-ion batteries and supercapacitors. For each energy device, the effect of determinative factors and structural modulating strategies of MOFs and derivatives are highlighted. Finally, we summarize the challenges and provide our perspective about MOFs and derivatives for future aqueous energy devices.</p>

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as desirable cross-functional platforms for electrochemical and photochemical energy conversion and storage (ECS) systems owing to their highly ordered and tunable compositions and structures. In this Review, we present engineering principles promoting the electro-/photochemical performance of MOF-based materials for ECS by component design and nanostructuring. Through the discussion of the engineering strategies of pristine MOFs, MOF composites, and their derivatives for ECS, the superiority and composition-structure-activity relationships of the engineered MOF-based materials with advanced components and nanostructures will be clarified. Finally, we provide a concluding discussion on the challenges and direction of future development in this emerging area of MOF-based materials for ECS.
