Abstract:A nitrogen-doped graphene-supported iron catalyst was used for the first time in the hydrogenation of a series of nitroarenes to give the corresponding amines with excellent activity and chemoselectivity under mild reaction conditions. Physicochemical characterization of the catalyst by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Mossbauer spectroscopy revealed the formation of iron particles with an iron oxide core and a metallic iron shell that were coated by a few layers of nitrogen-doped graphene. The unique structure of FeNx/C in the catalyst was proven to contribute to the hydrogenation activity.

Abstract:A convenient and highly selective platinum nanocatalyst was developed for the hydrogenation of nitro aromatics into the corresponding anilines at room temperature under ambient pressure. The platinum catalyst was highly active and selective for the hydrogenation of nitro aromatic compounds. Reducible groups such as aldehyde, ketone and nitrile were untouched during the hydrogenation of the corresponding nitro compounds, and the corresponding anilines were obtained quantitatively.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarenes to anilines employed with heterogeneous catalysts is a significant process and widely applied in chemical industry. However, designing high‐performance catalysts for these processes remains challenging. Recently, notable advancements have been achieved in synthesis methodologies, characterization techniques, and theoretical calculations, offering opportunities to gain insights into mechanisms. This review summarizes the recent progress in understanding the mechanistic aspects of selective hydrogenation catalysis for functionalized nitroarenes. We initiate by delving into the structure‐performance relationship, with the aim of providing a comprehensive understanding of mechanistic and kinetic details in the selective hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarenes. Subsequently, we introduce various strategies for designing high‐performance catalysts, categorizing them into three key aspects: isolating active sites, synergizing active sites and regulating local environments of active sites. Finally, we conclude with a concise overview of the current state of this field and provide a forward‐looking perspective for future studies, emphasizing the high‐performance design and manipulation of catalysts to achieve precise control over selectivity towards target products.

Abstract:A highly efficient and selective Rh nanocatalyst was demonstrated for the reduction of nitroarenes with hydrazine monohydrate under mild conditions. Functional groups such as halides (F, Cl, Br and I), CN, NH2, OH, alkene, ester and amide groups were untouched during the hydrogenation of the nitroarenes, and the corresponding anilines were obtained quantitatively.

Abstract:We successfully extended our Rh/bisphosphine-thiourea (ZhaoPhos) catalytic system to asymmetric hydrogenation of alpha,beta-unsaturated N-acylpyrazoles affording products with high yields and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 97% yield, 99% ee). The pyrazole moiety played an important role in providing H-bond acceptor sites, which is critical for achieving high reactivities and enantioselectivities.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenation is an important process in the chemical industry. Traditional catalysts require the effective cleavage of hydrogen molecules on the metal-catalyst surface, which is difficult to achieve with non-noble metal catalysts. In this work, we report a new hydrogenation method based on water/proton reduction, which is completely different from the catalytic cleavage of hydrogen molecules. Active hydrogen species and photo-generated electrons can be directly applied to the hydrogenation process with Cu1.94S-Zn0.23Cd0.77S semiconductor heterojunction nanorods. Nitrobenzene, with a variety of substituent groups, can be efficiently reduced to the corresponding aniline without the addition of hydrogen gas. This is a novel and direct pathway for hydrogenation using non-noble metal catalysts.

Abstract:Inhibiting the side reactions (such as dehalogenation) while promoting both/transfer hydrogenation are the main target for the production of functional anilines from nitroarenes; consequently, the preparation of an ideal catalyst to improve reaction selectivity stays as the fundamental direction for this field. In this work, we provided an easy-to-prepared heterogeneous catalyst with multilayered graphene shells where cobalt nanoparticles were encapsulated inside and distributed uniformly. This as-prepared catalysts were fabricated via one-pot pyrolysis by using mixture of citrate acid and cobalt acetate as C source and Co source, respectively. First of all, structural features of catalyst were characterized by a series of analytic techniques involving XPS, SEM/EDS, TEM as well as elemental mapping, to reveal its unique properties in relation to the catalytic mechanisms; in simple terms, the outer graphitic shell could be activated by the electronic interaction between the inner metallic nanoparticles and the outer graphene layer. Subsequently, the catalytic performance was tested in hydrogenation of nitrobenezene by using H2 as hydrogen source, so as to optimize the preparation process as well as the reaction conditions. Other nitro aromatics with functional groups such as halogen atoms, methyl or hydroxyl were also tolerated under very mild industrially viable and scalable conditions (60 °C, 2 h, and 2 MPa H2). More surprisingly, this catalyst could still exhibit excellent yields over 96 % in gram-scale test for the selected substrates, and could also be easily separated from the aqueous system due to its magnetic properties. The determined yields of target products were not decreased even after eight cycles, suggesting a potential for future industrial application in the selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes to the corresponding amines.

Abstract:The production of functionalized anilines by chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes occupies an important position in the chemical industries. Recently, cobalt and nitrogen codoped carbon (Co-N-C) catalysts have been reported to show outstanding catalytic performance in this process, whereas the nature of their active sites is still at the center of intense debate. In this paper, based on the well-controlled experiments on four types of typical Co-N-C materials derived from different methodologies, several unusual generalities in the hydrogenation of nitroarenes are clearly revealed, including protic-solvent dependence, antipoisoning, acid resistance, and reversible deactivation. Further investigations indicate that the single-atom species Co-N-x are the main active sites of the Co-N-C catalysts in this chemoselective hydrogenation process. The present work sheds light on the mechanism study on the metal-N-C catalysts and further contributes to the rational design of the high-performance single-atom catalysts.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of nitroarenes is one of the most important strategies to produce the corresponding anilines and dicyclohexylamines, both of which are the fundamental raw materials in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. Nevertheless, it is still a great challenge to develop a highly versatile and flexible catalytic system to selectively generate desired amines. Herein, we report the solvent-driven selectivity control over a bifunctional Pd/MIL-101 catalyst for the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene. An almost full selectivity of 99.9% to aniline or a surprising selectivity of 99.1% to dicyclohexylamine is achieved by using dimethylformamide (DMF, a polar solvent) or n-hexane (an apolar solvent) as the solvents, respectively. Abstract:Owing to their distinctive 1,3-dipolar structure, the catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation of nitrones to hydroxylamines has been a formidable and longstanding challenge, characterized by intricate enantiocontrol and susceptibility to N-O bond cleavage. In this study, the asymmetric hydrogenation and transfer hydrogenation of nitrones were accomplished with a tethered TsDPEN-derived cyclopentadienyl rhodium(III) catalyst (TsDPEN: p-toluenesulfonyl-1,2-diphenylethylene-1,2-diamine), the reaction proceeds via a novel 7-membered cyclic transition state, producing chiral hydroxylamines with up to 99% yield and >99% ee. The practical viability of this methodology was underscored by gram-scale catalytic reactions and subsequent transformations. Furthermore, mechanistic investigations and DFT calculations were also conducted to elucidate the origin of enantioselectivity.

Abstract:Tandem ammonia borane dehydrogenation and nitroarenes hydrogenation has been reported as a novel strategy for the preparation of aromatic amines. However, the practical application of this strategy is subjected to the high‐cost and tedious preparation of supported noble metal nanocatalysts. The commercially available CuO powder is herein demonstrated to be a robust catalyst for hydrogenation of nitroarenes using ammonia borane as a hydrogen source under mild conditions. Numerous amines (even sterically hindered, halogenated, and diamines) could be obtained through this method. This monometallic catalyst is characteristic of support‐free, excellent chemoselectivity, low‐cost, and high recyclability, which will favor its future utilization in preparative reduction chemistry. Mechanistic studies are also carried out to clarify that diazene and azoxybenzene are key intermediates of this heterogeneous reduction.

Abstract:The catalytic hydrogenation of nitroaromatics is an environmentally friendly technology for aniline production, and it is crucial to develop noble-metal-free catalysts that can achieve chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics under mild reaction conditions. In this work, zinc-modified Ni-Ti catalysts (NixZnyTi1) were fabricated and applied for the hydrogenation of nitroaromatics hydrogenation. It was found that the introduction of zinc effectively increases the surface Ni density, enhances the electronic effect, and improves the interaction between Ni and TiO2, resulting in smaller Ni particle size, more oxygen vacancies, higher dispersion and greater concentration of Ni on the catalyst surface. Furthermore, the electron-rich Niδ− obtained by electron transfer from Zn and Ti to Ni effectively adsorbs and dissociates hydrogen. The results reveal that NixZnyTi1 (Ni0.5Zn0.5Ti1) shows excellent catalytic performance under mild conditions (70 °C and 6 bar). These findings provide a rational strategy for the development of highly active non-noble-metal hydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract:Catalytic reduction of nitroarenes to the corresponding anilines is a crucial reaction in the fine and bulk chemical industry, however, the control of chemoselectivity remains enormous challenges when additional reducible groups exist in the same molecule of nitroarenes. Herein, we summarize the breakthroughs over the recent 10 years in this review, especially the recent 5 years, which focus on the selectivity control of catalytic reduction of nitroarenes that bear other reducible functional groups, including nitrostyrene, halogenated nitrobenzene, nitrobenzaldehyde, nitroacetophenone, nitrobenzonitrile, and nitrophenylacetylene. We mainly discuss the origin of the catalytic selectivity, which are classified as natural selectivity, intrinsic selectivity, and preferential adsorption. We attempt to discover how the hydrogen sources and metal catalysts affect the catalytic selectivity, and how to design and fabricate efficient catalysts for the selective reduction of -NO2 group. The selectivity caused by hydrogen sources is assigned as natural selectivity, and it is interesting that the hydrogen source contains protonic active hydrogen has natural selectivity to nitro group. Through analyzing various reported experimental results, we have rendered such a blueprint about the selectivity sequence for diverse hydrogen sources: in some cases, the more protonic active hydrogen in the molecule, the better its natural selectivity towards nitro reduction (N2H4 center dot H2O > HCOOH > NaBH4, NH3 center dot BH3 > H2). Moreover, the catalytic selectivity of metal catalysts for reducing nitroarenes containing other reducible groups depends on two central factors: intrinsic selectivity and preferential adsorption. Various approaches to improve the selectivity of metal catalysts have been discussed, including the adjustment of the metal-support interactions, confinement of metals in the pores of the supports, modification of metals with non-metallic elements (N, S, P, etc.), construction of bimetallic alloys or intermetallics, formation of single-atom catalysts, and so on. This review will further strengthen the understanding of the selectivity for the reduction of substituted nitroarenes and provide guidance for the design and preparation of highly efficient and selective metal catalysts.

Abstract:An adaptive catalytic system that provides control over the nitroarene hydrogenation network to prepare a wide range of aniline and hydroxylamine derivatives is presented. This system takes advantage of a delicate interplay between a rhodium(III) center and a Lewis acidic borane introduced in the secondary coordination sphere of the metal. The high chemoselectivity of the catalyst in the presence of various potentially vulnerable functional groups and its readiness to be deployed at a preparative scale illustrate its practicality. Mechanistic studies and density functional theory (DFT) methods were used to shed light on the mode of functioning of the catalyst and elucidate the origin of adaptivity. The competition for interaction with boron between a solvent molecule and a substrate was crucial for adaptivity. When operating in THF, the reduction network stops at the hydroxylamine platform, whereas the reaction can be directed to the aniline platform in toluene.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene was carried out under solvent-free conditions using supported AuPd nanoparticles catalyst, prepared by modified impregnation method (MIm), as efficient catalyst. >99% yield of aniline (AN) was obtained after 15 hours at 90 °C, 3 bar H2 that can be used without any further purification or separation, therefore reducing cost and energy input. Supported AuPd nanoparticles catalyst, prepared by MIm, was found to be active and stable even after 4 recycle experiments whereas the same catalyst prepared by SIm deactivated during the recycle experiments. The most effective catalyst was tested for the chemoselective hydrogenation of 4-chloronitrobenzene (CNB) to 4-chloroaniline (CAN). The activation energy of CNB to CAN was found to be 25 kJ mol-1, while that of CNB to AN was found to be 31 kJ mol-1. Based on this, the yield of CAN was maximized (92%) by lowering the reaction temperature to 25 °C.

Abstract:Because of the requirements of sustainable development as well as the desirability of using molecular hydrogen as a chemical reagent, it is of paramount importance and great challenge to develop highly active and selective catalysts for the hydrogenation of organic molecules, including substituted nitroarenes. We approach this question by probing unsupported bimetallic nanoparticles. A series of novel bimetallic RhxNiy (x, y = 1, 2, 3) nanoparticles were successfully prepared using our "noble metal-induced reduction" strategy. Unsupported Rh3Ni1 nanoparticles were subsequently identified to be a highly active and exceedingly selective catalyst for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes under ambient conditions, underscoring a remarkable synergistic effect of the two metals. Further experiments showed that the Rh3Ni1 catalyst could be a highly efficient, selective, and recyclable catalyst for a range of nitroarene substrates. This work showcased the value of bimetallic nanoparticles in catalysts development for sustainable chemistry.
