Abstract:A new approach to the preparation of an iridium oxide film for pH sensing is demonstrated. A thick, uniform and dense ceramic oxide layer was grown on the surface of an iridium wire by oxidizing the wire in a molten alkali metal carbonate at high temperature. The alkali metal ion from the carbonate melt was incorporated into the oxide, resulting in a highly stable oxide compound. After treated in acid solution, the oxide layer became hydrated. SEM, XRD, TGA and element analysis were carried out to characterize the oxide film, and a possible formula of the oxide was computed as Li0.86IrO2.34(OH)(0.76) (.) 0.39H(2)O. The electrode made with this new type of oxide film exhibited good pH sensitivity and stability, even in strong acid/base solutions, or in strong corrosive solution such as hydrofluoric acid. Furthermore, the electrode showed excellent long-term stability over the test period of two and a half years. In addition, individual electrodes prepared from the same batch exhibited remarkable agreement with respect to potential/pH slopes and apparent standard electrode potentials. The performance of the electrodes depends on the properties of the oxide film, such as composition, hydration state and oxidation state.

Abstract:Fabrication and characterization of a novel potentiometric pH electrode based on melt-oxidized iridium oxide film is presented. The oxide film produced in a lithium carbonate melt has the composition of LixIrOy. nH(2)O and shows high chemical stability. The electrode based on this oxide film exhibits very promising pH sensing performance, with an ideal Nernstian response in the tested pH range of 1 to 13. The potential response is fast, with a 90% response time obtained in less than 1 s for all pH changes. The open-circuit potential of the electrode is almost drift-free, with an average variation over time in a pH 6.6 solution as small as 0.1 mV/day. Furthermore, the potential/pH slopes and the apparent standard electrode potentials show excellent agreement among electrodes from the same batch. A comparison is made of the present electrode and those reported in the literature with respect to fabrication method and pH sensing characteristics. (C) 2001 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract:In this work, SrTiO3 nanoparticles (SrTiO3NPs), a novel and effective perovskite-type material, are synthesized to modify electrode for the development of sensitive enzymatic electrochemical biosensor applications. The electrochemical behavior of glucose oxidase (GOx) immobilized on SrTiO3NPs-modified glassy carbon electrode is investigated. Scanning electron microscopy and cyclic voltammetry are used to characterize the morphology and assay property of different modified electrodes. Results illustrate that SrTiO3NPs possess large surface area and apparently enhance the direct electron transfer between GOx and modified electrode. The SrTiO3NPs-based enzyme biosensor shows a high sensitivity of 15.6mA·M−1·cm−2, wide linear range from 0.01mM to 1.2mM, and a low detection limit of 3μM (S/N=3). Furthermore, the resultant glucose biosensor has excellent selectivity, acceptable repeatability, practicality and stability. The perovskite SrTiO3NPs provide a very attractive and potential electrode material to develop electrochemical biosensors.
A long-term stable iridium oxide pH electrode

Abstract:In this work, a long-term stable pH electrode based on iridium oxide film is reported. A new method, i.e., a ‘carbonate melt oxidation’ method, has been developed to fabricate iridium oxide pH electrode. In this method, a uniform iridium oxide film is coated on the surface of an iridium metal wire through oxidation of the wire in a carbonate melt. The electrode made this way shows a “drift-free” behavior in pH buffer solutions. Calibration curves for the same electrode implied that the electrode is very stable over a long period of 2.5 years. Therefore, the present electrode is very suitable for continuous pH measurement without the need of frequent calibration.
An All-Solid-State Ti/RuOx pH Electrode Prepared Based on the Thermal Oxidation Method

Abstract:The development of all-solid-state precise pH electrodes holds significant importance in various fields, particularly in marine scientific research. To achieve this goal, we proposed a novel fabrication technique for an all-solid-state ruthenium oxide (Ti/RuOx) pH electrode. We thin-coated the RuCl3 precursor solution on a titanium wire substrate using a heat gun repeatedly and then calcined it in a mixture of Li2CO3 and Na2O2 at 400 °C to obtain a ruthenium oxide (RuOx) film. This RuOx film was subjected to acid treatment with dilute nitric acid, and a polytetrafluoroethylene heat shrink tube was wrapped around the non-RuOx film area. Finally, the RuOx film was fully immersed in a pH 4.00 buffer solution, finalizing the electrode preparation. The RuOx film exhibits a dense and regular conical morphology. The Ti/RuOx electrode demonstrates a good near-Nernstian response slope (e.g., -59.04 mV/pH at 25 °C), high linearity (e.g., R2 = 0.9999), rapid response (<1 s), low hysteresis (<3 mV), excellent reversibility, and good repeatability in the pH range of 2.00-10.00. After full hydration, the Ti/RuOx electrode shows a potential drift of 8.5 mV and a drift rate of approximately 0.27 mV/day over a period of 25 days, indicating good long-term stability. Furthermore, the Ti/RuOx electrode exhibits robust resistance against interference from various ions and low-concentration redox substances, ensuring a long storage life (at least 280 days), and high measurement accuracy (e.g., ± 0.02 pH units) for diverse water samples, including seawater, freshwater, and tap water. This study has evaluated the potential of the Ti/RuOx electrode as a reliable and accurate tool for pH measurements in marine scientific applications.

Abstract:Iridium oxide electrodes made by melted Li2CO3 + Na2O2 in a semi-closed/closed reactor exhibited fast response and high stability. A slight periodic fluctuation of potential change with standard deviation < 0.65 mV in 48 h and < 2.30 mV (0.04 pH) over 139 h were observed. The composition, structure, and sensing mechanism of the pH sensitive substance was examined. The XRD pattern and XPS results suggested the newly produced material Hy-xLix[LiIr2]O-6 was a mixture of H5-xLix[LiIr2]O-6 and H3-xLix[LiIr2]O-6 with a HCrO2 structure. Approximately 95% of Li+ was replaced by H+ after acid treatment. The pH sensing process was found to be an irreversible redox reaction between the tetravalent and trivalent iridium oxides according to the CV and XPS results. The presence of lithium ion in the lattice combined with well-crystallized small crystals corresponded to the fast response during the pH sensing process. The crystal structure may help to protect iridium from the interference of weak oxides, and thus may maintain stability with a relatively acceptable potential drift in the natural redox condition. The large portion of H- existing in the oxide lattice detected by XPS confirmed the well-hydrated structure, which may also help the electrode to maintain high stability. Abstract:pH is a fundamental parameter in understanding the chemical processes in many fields. Based on the strong oxidative characteristic of the molten lithium carbonate (Li2CO3), an advanced iridium oxide electrode preparation approach is developed by adding sodium peroxide (Na2O2) powder into a Li2CO3 melt in a semi-closed/closed reactor at a high temperature to increase the regional peroxide (O-2(2-)) ion concentration in the iridium-melt interface. The iridium oxide film (IROF) of prepared electrodes has a dense and uniform surface with small and cone-shaped particles. Open-circuit tests show that electrodes exhibit a near-Nernstian pH response with good linearity, fast response, high stability (a slight periodic fluctuation of potential change with standard deviation <0.65 mV in 48 h), good reversibility in the pH range of 2.00-10.00, and anti-interference to low concentration of oxidants. Besides, electrodes show a stable response in seawater, indicating the major ions in seawater do not influence their performances. In addition, prepared electrodes from the same batch show consistency in terms of sensitivity and the intercept of the standard curve (E degrees), while electrodes from different batches vary in E degrees, which could be attributed to the hardness in controlling identical synthetic conditions among fabrications of different batches. Electrochemical Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide at the Sputtered Titanium Oxide Electrode

Abstract:In this paper a planar titanium oxide electrode was fabricated by standard microelectronic technol-ogy and its electrochemical properties in phosphate buffer solution was investigated. According to the cy-clic vohammetric results, both hydrogen peroxide and oxygen can be cathodic reduced at titanium oxide e-lectrode, while the reduction of hydrogen peroxide is preferential. The amperometric measurement of hy-drogen peroxide at the planar titanium oxide electrode in air saturated phosphate buffer solution at -300 mV shows fast responses. The amperometric response to 0.1 mmol/L hydrogen peroxide is 0.4 μA while the residual current due to the reduction of oxygen is only 14 nA. Glucose oxidase has been immobilized on the surface of titanium oxide film to explore the possible applications of this electrode in biosensing. The experimental results show it is difficult to immobilize enzyme on titanium oxide surface.

Abstract:Biological contamination is an important issue in environmental pH detection, and our prepared electrochemically cleanable electrode may be an effective solution. By electrodepositing an iridium oxide–ruthenium oxide composite on a titanium sheet substrate, the electrode shows a sensitivity of 59.4 mV per pH in the pH range of 2–12 with high reproducibility, low hysteresis, high selectivity and high stability. It is worth mentioning that the electrode was proved to be electrochemically cleanable from biological contamination. When the cleaning time was 30 minutes, the electrode sensitivity rose from 50 to 58 mV per pH. Furthermore, the pH sensor, assembled from the prepared iridium–ruthenium oxide electrode and a home-made Ag/AgCl electrode, has similar electrode properties to those of commercial glass electrodes, but is also mechanically strong and electrochemically cleanable, which is promising for long-term deployment in natural environments.

Abstract:In-situ measurement of pH at elevated temperatures and pressures is of major importance for investigating chemical and biochemical systems in extreme environments. Based on the performance of the newly developed IrO x electrode at 25 °C, we initiated a series of experiments to test the electrode at elevated temperatures (100 to 175 °C) and high pressure (25 MPa). The experiment was carried out in a titanium flow-through reactor. Our results revealed good pH response at 100, 150 and 175 °C, with good Nernstian slopes at 100 and 150 °C. Although a greater-than-Nernstian response was observed at 175 °C, the factors that cause this difference are attributed to the accuracy of calculations of the distribution of aqueous species rather than alteration of the IrO x surface. A key problem that may limit applications of the IrO x electrode at elevated temperatures and pressures is the noticeable shift in E° during the 175 °C (25 MPa) experiments and between experiments with similar conditions at 150 °C. The results of tests from 25 °C to elevated temperatures provide highly useful information on the reversibility and functionality of the IrO x -pH sensor with implications for the suitability of its use under challenging chemical and physical conditions.

Abstract:pH value plays an important role in many fields such as chemistry and biology; therefore, rapid and accurate pH measurement is very important. Because of its advantages in preparation, wide test range, rapid response, and good biocompatibility, iridium oxide material has received more and more attention. In this paper, we present a method for preparing iridium oxide pH microelectrodes based on the sputter deposition method. The sputtering parameters of iridium oxide are also studied and optimized. Open-circuit potential tests show that microelectrodes exhibit near-Nernstian pH response with good linearity (about 60 mV/pH), fast response, high stability (a slight periodic fluctuation of potential change <2.5 mV in 24 h), and good reversibility in the pH range of 1.00–13.00.

Abstract:An all solid-state pH micro-sensor has been developed using anodic electrodeposition of an iridium oxide (IrOx) film onto a 10 mu m platinum ultramicroelectrode. The electrochemical growth of the IrOx film was accomplished by 100 potential sweeps at 50 mV/s, at different potential ranges of electrochemical deposition, followed by heat treatment at 100 degrees C for 2 h. The pH micro-sensor shows quick response to the pH variation, excellent sensitivity, stability and long lifetime in a wide pH range between 1.0 and 13.0. The slope of potential-pH response curve is found to dependent on the Ir(III)/Ir(IV) ratio of in the film, determined by XPS analysis, which is a consequence of scanning potential range during the anodic electrodeposition. The sensor has been employed to explore the localized pH distribution during the corrosion of 316L stainless steel in NaCl solution at open circuit potential and results show that localized anodic and cathodic sites on the 316L stainless steel can be accurately monitored and the pH difference between the cathodic and anodic zones increases from 0.22 to 1.27 with the prolonging of the immersion time. Abstract:The electrocatalysts based on platinized TiO 2 (Ru) oxides with different ruthenium content are studied as the working electrode in solid-state potentiometric sensors for H 2 and CO. Increasing the ruthenium content does not affect the size of platinum particles, but reduces its content in the metallic state. The results of X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and scanning electron microscopic studies are presented. The synthesized electrocatalysts are tested as the working-electrode materials in hydrogen and carbon monoxide sensors for the gas concentration in the air flow from 1 to 50 000 ppm. The characteristics of the sensors are shown to depend on the oxide support composition and structure. The electrocatalysts with the rutile structure are recommended for the practical use; the ruthenium content is determined by the range of analyzed CO concentrations.

Abstract:A pH-sensitive RuO₂ electrode coated in a commercial cyanoacrylate adhesive typically exhibits very low pH sensitivity, and could be paired with a RuO₂ working electrode as a differential type pH sensor. However, such sensors display poor performance in real sample matrices. A pH sensor employing a RuO₂ pH-sensitive working electrode and a SiO₂-PVB junction-modified RuO₂ reference electrode is developed as an alternative high-performance solution. This sensor exhibits a performance similar to that of a commercial glass pH sensor in some common sample matrices, particularly, an excellent pH sensitivity of 55.7 mV/pH, a hysteresis as low as 2.7 mV, and a drift below 2.2 mV/h. The developed sensor structure opens the way towards the development of a simple, cost effective, and robust pH sensor for pH analysis in various sample matrices.

Abstract:A low-cost flexible miniaturized pH sensor was developed by cyclic-voltammetry (CV) electrodeposition of ruthenium oxide (RUO 2 ) on the surface of screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) on PET substrate. By using a post atmospheric anneal treatment at a low temperature of 90°C for 30 mins, the prepared sensor could detect a wide-range pH with stable potential responses. The measured open-circuit potential (OCP) results demonstrated that the good linear pH range was from 3 to 13 with a sensitivity of 51.17 mV/pH. The morphologies, composition and capacitance of modified SPCEs were characterized with SEM, XRD and electrochemical tests. For on-site fast determination of analyte pH, a smartphone-based analyzer was developed by using a mini potentiostat IC chip.
Characterization and Application of a Metallic Tungsten Electrode for Potentiometric Ph Measurements

Abstract:This study demonstrated the application of a metallic tungsten electrode for pH measurement. The metallic tungsten electrode exhibited an excellent linear response similar to the tungsten oxide electrode. Both the metallic tungsten electrode and tungsten oxide electrode used in our study exhibited a near-Nernstian response of −51.9mV/pH and −56.8mV/pH, respectively. No obvious interference was observed from the primary cations. The fitted curve for the metallic tungsten electrode showed a smaller slope (−1.87mV/°C) and more linear (R2=0.999) temperature response than those of the tungsten oxide electrode, indicating its suitability in practical pH measurements due to its precise compensation of temperature. Moreover, the metallic tungsten electrode was almost uninfluenced by the hydrodynamic effect, and its open circuit potential change was less than 2mV even at high stirrer rotation speeds (120rev/min) in solution. Long-term stability could be achieved for the metallic tungsten electrode over the pH range 4.5–8.0. Owing to the advantages such as precise temperature compensation, insensitivity to the hydrodynamic effect, long-term stability, good selectivity, and intrinsic properties of the solid-state electrode, the metallic tungsten electrode has shown promise for long-term pH monitoring.
A flexible IrO2 membrane for pH sensing

Abstract:An optimized mixture of polydopamine (PDA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is employed as the surface functionalizing agent and reducing agent to encapsulate individual polypropylene (PP) fibers of polypropylene micromembrane (PPMM). The functionalized PPMM becomes hydrophilic to allow the formation of Au nuclei for subsequent electroless Au deposition. The metalized PPMM is further deposited with IrO 2 nanoparticles, and evaluated as a flexible and porous pH sensor. Images from scanning electron microscope confirms the uniform formation of IrO 2 nanoparticles on Au-coated PP fibers. For pH-sensing performance, the IrO 2 -decorated metalized PPMM reveals a super-Nernstian response for a sensing slope of -74.45 mV/pH in aqueous solutions with pH value ranging between 2 and 12. In addition, the pH-sensing performance is properly maintained after 5000 bending cycles and hysteresis is modest in an acidic environment. The cell viability test indicates a negligible bio-toxicity. Our strategy of using a conductive polymeric membrane decorated with IrO 2 nanoparticles enables possible sensing applications in wearable and implantable electronics.

Abstract:Development of low-cost electrocatalysts is a challenging task and has been the focus in the field of advanced water oxidation in comparison to ruthenium and iridium oxide-based electrodes. The current research focused on Ti doped α-Fe2O3 electrodes for water oxidation. The water oxidation rate initially enhanced and then decreased as Ti doping levels increase. The enhanced activity can be ascribed to the increased surface area and charge transfer rate constant kct. The increase in kct results from a greater potential drop on the Helmholtz layer, which is mainly attributed to an increased surface state density. The decreased performance for the electrodes with high Ti levels is due to the formation of a TiO2-Fe2O3 mixture where TiO2 shows poor activity. Moreover, the mechanism of charge transfer is discussed. This study may provide an alternative hematite semiconductor anode for water dark oxidation, environmental pollution control, and may even be helpful for better understanding the photoelectrochemical oxidation of water under the weak light illumination and high bias potential.

Abstract:In this study, a novel solid-state pH sensor based on an untreated platinum sheet was investigated. Chronopotentiometry using positive and negative currents was applied to effect the interconversion of Pt and PtO. To eliminate the influence of concentration polarization, a galvanostatic double-pulse method was applied for pH measurement. The consecutively applied currents were +100, +3, -100, and -3 mu,A for excitation times of 0.5, 1, 0.5, and 1 s, respectively. Stable potentials under the small currents were obtained which could be used to determine pH. The platinum sheet electrode exhibited near-Nernstian behavior in the pH range 2-12, with fitted lines having slopes of -44.2 and -51.1 mV/pH unit under the positive and negative currents, respectively. Overall, excellent linearity and reproducibility could be achieved. Moreover, the temperature responses for the method in pH 4, 6.86, and 9.18 buffer solutions obeyed the Nernst equation, and further supported the proposed mechanism for pH determination.
