Abstract:Perylene diimide supramolecular (PDIs) materials are promising candidates for harnessing sunlight to drive photocatalytic processes in environmental remediation and renewable energy production. However, the performance of the pristine PDIs photocatalyst remains unsatisfactory. Consequently, extensive efforts are being dedicated to enhancing the performance of this photocatalyst family. Many studies reported on the intrinsic structure regulation and heterojunction construction of PDIs materials. This review focuses on recent advancements in these fields, including molecular structure design, enhancing crystallinity, regulating morphology, and constructing various heterojunctions. Additionally, this work highlights the recent progress in the application of water splitting, pollutants degradation, and other photocatalytic reactions. The challenges and future perspectives for exploring advanced PDIs-based photocatalysts are thoroughly discussed and summarized.

Abstract:As organic semiconductor materials gain increasing prominence in the realm of photocatalysis, two carbon-nitrogen materials, poly (heptazine imide) (PHI) and poly (triazine imide) (PTI), have garnered extensive attention and applications owing to their unique structure properties. This review elaborates on the distinctive physical and chemical features of PHI and PTI, emphasizing their formation mechanisms and the ensuing properties. Furthermore, it elucidates the intricate correlation between the energy band structures and various photocatalytic reactions. Additionally, the review outlines the primary synthetic strategies for constructing PHI and PTI, along with characterization techniques for their identification. It also summarizes the primary strategies for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of PHI and PTI, whose advantages in various photocatalytic applications are discussed. Finally, it highlights the promising prospects and challenges pertaining to PHI and PTI as photocatalysts.

Abstract:In the past few decades, countless organic and inorganic pollutants caused serious environmental problems all over the world. One way to remove or degrade pollutants in the environment is to use oxidizing agents. Photocatalytic technology uses unlimited solar energy to efficiently oxidize and remove organic pollutants. Recently, perylene diimide (PDI)-based nanomaterials have been widely used in photocatalytic degradation. However, there are no reviews on the use of PDI-based composites to remove organic pollutants from contaminated water. Therefore, a review paper is needed to fully understand the current status and prospects of this field. The main purpose of this work is to highlight the recent progress of PDI-based photocatalysts in the removal of organic pollutants. In this review, the basic molecular design and properties of PDI molecules are first described. Then, strategies to improve the photocatalytic activity of PDI are summarized. The system factor and water chemistry affecting the photocatalytic activity for organic pollutant removal are also discussed. Lastly, the stability and future challenges of PDI-based composites are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The halide perovskite material has attracted vast attention as a versatile semiconductor in the past decade. With the unique advantages in physical and chemical properties, they have also shown great potential in photocatalytic applications. This review aims at the specific design principles triggered by the unique properties when employing halide-perovskite-based photocatalytic systems from the following perspectives: (I) Design of photoelectrocatalytic device structures including the n-i-p/p-i-n structure, photoelectrode device encapsulation, and electrolyte engineering. (II) The design of heterogeneous photocatalytic systems toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and CO 2 reduction reaction, including the light management, surface/interface engineering, stability improvement, product selectivity engineering, and reaction system engineering. (III) The photocatalysts for the environmental application and organic synthesis. Based on the analyses, the review also suggests the prospective research for the future development of halide-perovskite-based photocatalytic systems.

Abstract:The new age carbon‐based materials poly heptazine imide (PHI) are bio‐benevolent as well as excellent photocatalysts. The review focusses on advances in high performance photocatalytic hydrogen evolution using PHI and based materials. The properties such as efficiency, selectivity, stability and strategies for improving performance have been explored. This review presents an overview of recent developments and advancements in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution using poly(heptazine imide) (PHI) and based materials. Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) has received great amount of attention because of its potential as a clean and sustainable energy source and PHI based materials have emerged as promising candidates for this purpose due to their distinct structural properties, improved light absorption, charge separation and reduced recombination. This review discusses the essential concepts of PHE and the potential of poly(heptazine imide) materials and their derivatives as photocatalysts and also the limitations of these materials in photocatalytic activity. It addresses the synthetic routes and strategies adopted to enhance the photocatalytic activity of these materials including surface modifications, band engineering, doping, loading co‐catalysts and composites & heterojunction construction. Furthermore, the recent works in photocatalytic H2 evolution using PHI and based materials have been summarized and discussed. Additionally, we examined the challenges and future outlooks in this field, emphasizing the need for scalable and cost‐effective production methods.

Abstract:Photocatalysis as an advanced oxidation process has been widely used in the fields of energy and environmental restoration. However, the reaction efficiency of photocatalysis is confined through the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Recently, emerging piezocatalysis can achieve high-efficiency conversion of mechanical energy, which has wonderful capability in relieving the energy crisis and the environment problem. Piezo-photocatalysis can perfectly combine the advantages of the two to improve the catalytic efficiency, because the piezoelectric effect can form an internal electric field inside a photocatalyst to improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, thereby obtaining more excellent photocatalysis performance; nevertheless, there is still a vast knowledge gap for the design, applications, and prospects of piezo-photocatalysts. Therefore, we organized a comprehensive review to better understand the research progress and research status of piezo-photocatalytic materials. We also supply a comprehensive overview of the research status of DFT for piezo-photocatalyst prediction and reaction mechanism analysis and elucidate the construction strategies (doping, crystal facet control, phase structure, surface modification, morphology, co-catalyst modification, composite hybridization, etc.) of the piezo-photocatalytic system and the underlying mechanisms for enhancing the catalytic performance. Aiming at the current challenges and prospects of piezo-photocatalysis, this review will clarify the development direction of piezo-photocatalysis, so as to achieve a deeper exploration and broaden the application of piezo-photocatalysis.

Photocatalytic technology has emerged as a crucial avenue for harnessing solar energy, presenting itself as a viable solution to address the current energy crisis and environmental pollution. The past 50 years have witnessed significant progress and breakthroughs in scientific research on photocatalytic technology. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the mechanism of photocatalytic technology and methods to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of semiconductor photocatalysts, such as TiO 2 and ZnO. In this paper, common modification methods are divided into four categories: heterojunction construction, cocatalyst, defects, and morphological engineering. The origin and development of photocatalysts in each category are briefly summarized; moreover, the latest progress in each type of modification is discussed. S-scheme heterojunctions retain the high reduction and oxidation capacity of photogenerated electrons and holes by sacrificing half of the photogenerated carriers, showing excellent performance in photocatalysis and great application potential. The challenges associated with current modification schemes are presented. There is growing interest in quantitative and atomic-level modulation as attractive approaches to tackling these challenges. Regulating the electronic spin state and internal field is important for minimizing photogenerated carrier recombination in photocatalysis. Abstract:Solar‐driven high‐value utilization of biomass and its derivatives has attracted tremendous attention in replacing fossil sources to generate chemicals. Developing high‐performance photocatalysts to selectively catalyze bio‐platform molecules remains a challenge. Herein, biomass‐based 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was efficiently and selectively photooxidized to 2, 5‐diformylfuran (DFF) using a metal‐free polyimide (PI). PI with moderate photooxidation capacity delivered high DFF selectivity of 91% and high apparent quantum efficiency of 1.13%, nearly 7 times higher than that of graphitic carbon nitride. Experimental measurements and theoretical calculations revealed that the band structure and photooxidation capability of PI can be continuously modulated by varying the molar ratio of amine and anhydride. Mechanism analysis depicted that holes and superoxide radicals play crucial roles in the efficient photooxidation of HMF to DFF. This work provides guidance on designing efficient polymeric photocatalysts for oxidating biomass and its derivatives to value‐added chemicals.

Abstract:Photocatalysis with stable, efficient and inexpensive metal-free catalysts is one of the most promising options for non-polluting energy production. This review article covers the state-of-the-art development of various effective metal-free polymeric photocatalysts with large pi-conjugated units for chemical transformations including water splitting, CO2 and N-2 reduction, organic synthesis and monomer polymerisation. The article starts with the catalytic mechanisms of metal-free photocatalysts. Then a particular focus is on the rational manipulation of pi-conjugation enlargement, charge separation, electronic structures and band structures in the design of metal-free polymeric photocatalysts. Following the design principles, the selection and construction of functional units are discussed, as well as the connecting bonds and dimensions of pi-conjugated polymeric photocatalysts. Finally the hot and emerging applications of metal-free polymeric photocatalysts for photocatalytic chemical transformations are summarized. The strategies provide potential avenues to address the challenges of catalyst activity, selectivity and stability in the further development of highly effective metal-free polymeric photocatalysts.

Abstract:Photocatalysis, in which semiconductors are used to harvest light and produce charge carrier derivatives, has been widely valued as a promising sustainable technique. However, due to the poor separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, the overall energy conversion efficiency sticks at 1%, which is far from the desired industrial application demand of 10%. Very recently, pyroelectric catalysis technology with asymmetric positive/negative charge centers has emerged, which is hoped to play a key role in alleviating energy crisis and environmental problems. With pyroelectric catalysts introduced into photocatalysts, its internal spontaneous polarization electric field can effectively promote the separation of photogenerated carriers, thus improving the photocatalytic performance. Therefore, pyroelectric photocatalysis is expected to break the widely recognized energy efficiency threshold of 10% for scale-up industrial implementation of photocatalytic technique. Nevertheless, there is still a huge cognitive gap between fundamental theory and practice in the design, characterizations, and application of pyroelectric photocatalysts. Hence, a comprehensive review is conducted to understand the state-of-the-art progress in pyroelectric photocatalysis. The polarization treatment, evaluation parameters and the corresponding atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction characterization for the identification of high-efficiency pyroelectric materials are also elaborated. We also propose five potential directions for large-scale applications of pyroelectric photocatalysis, including multi-step cascade reactions, controllable reactions, excitable biomaterials, hazardous waste treatment, and water wave energy collection devices.

Abstract:The insufficient charge separation and sluggish exciton transport severely limit the utilization of polymeric photocatalysts. To resolve the above issues, we incorporate bountiful carboxyl substituents within a novel benzodiimidazole oligomer and assemble it into a crystalline semiconductor. The photocatalyst is polar, hydrophilic, short-range crystalline, and capable of both hydrogen and oxygen evolution. The introduction of carboxyl side-groups adds asymmetry to the local structure and increases the built-in electric field. Further, accelerated carrier transfer is enabled via the short-range crystallinity. The superior hydrogen and oxygen production rates of 18.63 and 2.87 mmol g(-1) h(-1) represent one of the best performances ever reported among dual-functional polymeric photocatalysts. Our work initiates studies on high-performance oligomer photocatalysts, opening a new frontier to produce solar fuel.

Abstract:Photocatalysis utilizes solar energy to produce clean fuels such as hydrogen or generate highly reactive species to subsequently break the organic pollutants into clean end products. Direct Z-scheme heterostructured photocatalysts can overcome the fundamental shortcomings in conventional photocatalysts and thus enable this green technology in tackling the energy crisis and environmental problems at the same time. Various approaches and numerous materials have been attempted in the hope of achieving high efficiency and broad effectiveness for practical applications. This work intends to provide a comprehensive and timely review on direct Z-scheme photocatalysts from the material's point of view. The formation mechanisms based on the driving forces of the charge transfer are firstly discussed to guide the material design. Three mechanisms, namely internal electric field, interfacial defect-induced charge transfer, and facet-induced charge transfer, are identified and summarized. Various material systems are then extensively discussed and compared according to their applications, followed by the emerging material modification strategies for performance improvement. Lastly, the review provides the perspectives for future development. It is expected that the insights of this up-to-date review could guide the material design and performance improvement of the direct Z-scheme systems to achieve their maximum potentials.

Abstract:Porous materials have attracted considerable attention in materials science, chemistry and multidisciplinary areas of research due to their diverse structures, tailorable functionalities, large surface areas, remarkable optical transparency, confinement and shape selectivity effects. The precise architecture of porous photocatalytic materials has been extensively reported by the hybridization of semiconducting nanoparticles (NPs), light-responsive metal complexes and plasmonic metal NPs with silica-based micro-, meso- and macro-porous nanostructures. This review targets to cover state-of-the-art accomplishments in the surface engineering chemistry of zeolites, mesoporous silica, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as excellent host materials for solar to chemical energy conversion and environmental remediation. The specific advantages and disadvantages of representative porous materials in photocatalysis have also been elaborated and summarized. Finally, key advances and prospects are presented to overcome the current challenges in photocatalysis and to inspire further studies in this rapidly evolving research field.

Abstract:Photocatalysis,which is the catalyzation of redox reactions via the use of energy obtained from light sources,is a topic that has garnered a lot of attention in recent years as a means of addressing the environmental and economic issues plaguing society today.Of particular interest are photosynthesis can potentially mimic a variety of vital reactions,many of which hold the key to develop sustainable energy economy.In light of this,many of the technological and procedural advancements that have recently occurred in the field are discussed in this review,namely those linked to:(1) photocatalysts made from metal oxides,nitride,and sulfides;(2) photocatalysis via polymeric carbon nitride(PCN);and(3) general advances and mechanistic insights related to TiO 2 -based catalysts.The challenges and opportunities that have arisen over the past few years are discussed in detail.Basic concepts and experimental procedures which could be useful for eventually overcoming the problems associated with photocatalysis are presented herein.

Abstract:Direct conversion of solar light into chemical energy by means of photocatalysis or photoelectrocatalysis is currently a point of focus for sustainable energy development and environmental remediation. However, its current efficiency is still far from satisfying, suffering especially from severe charge recombination. To solve this problem, the piezo‐phototronic effect has emerged as one of the most effective strategies for photo(electro)catalysis. Through the integration of piezoelectricity, photoexcitation, and semiconductor properties, the built‐in electric field by mechanical stimulation induced polarization can serve as a flexible autovalve to modulate the charge‐transfer pathway and facilitate carrier separation both in the bulk phase and at the surfaces of semiconductors. This review focuses on illustrating the trends and impacts of research based on piezo‐enhanced photocatalytic reactions. The fundamental mechanisms of piezo‐phototronics modulated band bending and charge migration are highlighted. Through comparing and classifying different categories of piezo‐photocatalysts (like the typical ZnO, MoS2, and BaTiO3), the recent advances in polarization‐promoted photo(electro)catalytic processes involving water splitting and pollutant degradation are overviewed. Meanwhile the optimization methods to promote their catalytic activities are described. Finally, the outlook for future development of polarization‐enhanced strategies is presented.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysts have attracted increased attention due to their great potential for solving energy and environmental problems. The formation of Z-scheme photocatalytic systems that mimic natural photosynthesis is a promising strategy to improve photocatalytic activity that is superior to single component photocatalysts. The connection between photosystem I (PS I) and photosystem II (PS II) are crucial for constructing efficient Z-scheme photocatalytic systems using two photocatalysts (PS I and PS II). The present review concisely summarizes and highlights recent state-of-the-art accomplishments of Z-scheme photocatalytic systems with diverse connection modes, including i) with shuttle redox mediators, ii) without electron mediators, and iii) with solid-state electron mediators, which effectively increase visible-light absorption, promote the separation and transportation of photoinduced charge carriers, and thus enhance the photocatalytic efficiency. The challenges and prospects for future development of Z-scheme photocatalytic systems are also presented.

Abstract:Semiconductor-based photocatalysis is an efficient technology that reduces energy consumption and environmental pollution; however, it is impeded by Coulombic attraction-induced charge recombination, which reduces solar conversion efficiency. The internal electric field induced by heterointerface engineering, defect engineering, heteroatom doping, ferroelectric polarization, and polar surface terminations intervening in the uniform charge distribution can drive the directional migration of photogenerated electrons and holes, suppressing the charge recombination and back-reaction of intermediate species. However, the built-in electric field is static and easily shielded by internal active carriers and externally charged ions, which is detrimental to successive charge separation. Moreover, the internal electric field that relies solely on the structural design of the catalyst often requires complex preparation processes and is disqualified from simple and efficient solar energy conversion. By coupling the piezoelectric effect with the photoexcitation feature in piezo-photocatalysis, charge carrier dynamics can be persistently modulated. The noncentrosymmetric structures of piezoelectrics result in the deviation of positive and negative charge centers with the exerted external stress, generating nonzero dipole moments and polarization charges on the opposite terminals of the crystal. On the one hand, the polarized bound charges and initiated piezoelectric polarization field by mechanical stress promote the separation and transfer of photoinduced charges in both the bulk and on the surface of the catalyst, facilitating more active carriers to participate in the surface reaction. On the other hand, the accumulation of piezoelectric polarization charges on the surface contributes to the upward or downward bending of the band, which can flexibly manipulate the charge transfer behavior at the heterojunction interface, further steering the spatial distribution of electrons and holes. In addition, band tilting induced by piezoelectric polarization can also modulate the energy band structure of the catalyst to match the redox potential of the target reaction, breaking the intrinsic thermodynamic restriction. Hence, the coupling of solar and mechanical energy significantly improves the efficiency of catalytic energy conversion. As a complex reaction process of piezo-photocatalysis, diverse enhancement strategies have been implemented; however, there are few systematic and pertinent overviews for high-performance piezo-photocatalyst design. This study introduces the mechanism of piezoelectric polarization-enhanced photocatalysis and summarizes the catalytic enhancement strategy based on the piezo-photocatalysis reaction process, including morphology and polarization regulation, heterostructure construction, and surface engineering. Meanwhile, recent advances in piezo-photocatalysis for energy applications have been reviewed. Finally, the problems and challenges associated with the development of piezo-photocatalysis are analyzed and discussed.
