Abstract:The electronic: band structure of a semiconductor photocatalyst intrinsically controls its level of conduction band (CB) and valence band (VB) and, thus, influences its activity for different photocatalytic reactions. Here, we report a simple bottom-up, strategy to rationally tune the band structure of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). By incorporating electron-deficient pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) monomer into the network of g-C3N4, the,VB position can be largely decreased and, thus, gives a strong photooxidation capability. Consequently, the modified photocatalyst shows preferential activity for water, oxidation over water reduction in comparison with g-C3N4. More strikingly, the active species involved in the photodegradation of methyl orange switches from photogenerated electrons to holes after band structure engineering. This Work may provide guidance on designing efficient polymer photocatalysts with the desirable electronic structure for specific photoreactions.

Abstract:Nature-inspired artificial Z-scheme photocatalyst offers great promise in solar overall water splitting, but its rational design, construction and interfacial charge transfer mechanism remain ambiguous. Here, we design an approach of engineering interfacial band bending via work function regulation, which realizes directional charge transfer at interface and affords direct Z-scheme pathway. Taking BiVO4 as prototype, its oxygen vacancy concentration is reduced by slowing down the crystallization rate, thereby changing the work function from smaller to larger than that of polymeric carbon nitride (PCN). Consequently, the photoinduced charge transfer pathway of BiVO4/PCN is switched from type-II to Z-scheme as evidenced by synchronous illuminated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Specifically, the direct Z-scheme BiVO4/PCN shows superior photocatalytic performance in water splitting. This work provides deep insights and guidelines to constructing heterojunction photocatalysts for solar utilization.

Abstract:Here, it is unveiled that the key obstacle in photocatalytic overall water splitting on the current version of poly (heptazine imide) (PHI) is closely correlated with the interlayer stacking modes. Meanwhile, it is demonstrated that optimizing the interlayer stacking modes of PHI indeed can promote charge transport efficiency and improve photocatalytic overall water‐splitting activity. Poly (heptazine imide) (PHI), a classic 2D polymeric photocatalyst, represents a promising organic semiconductor for photocatalytic overall water splitting (POWS). However, since the key bottleneck in POWS of PHI remains unclear, its quantum efficiency of POWS is extremely restrained. To identify the key obstacle in POWS on the PHI, a series of PHI with different stacking modes is synthesized by tuning interlayer cations. The structural characterizations revealed that tuning the interlayer cations of PHI can induce rearrangements in interlayer stacking modes. Additionally, charge carriers dynamics uncover that optimizing the interlayer stacking modes of PHI can promote exciton diffusion and prolong the photoexcited electron lifetimes, thus improving the concentration of surface‐reaching charge. More importantly, this confirms that the POWS activity of PHI is closely correlated with the interlayer stacking modes. This work offers new insight into structural regulation for governing charge‐transport dynamics and the activity of 2D polymeric photocatalysts.

Insights into Photoinduced Carrier Dynamics and Overall Water Splitting of Z-Scheme van der Waals Heterostructures with Intrinsic Electric Polarization

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations in combination with nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD), we propose novel heterostructures of carbon nitride (C7N6) and the Janus GaSnPS monolayer as promising direct Z-scheme photocatalysts for solar-driven overall water splitting. The out-of-plane electric field due to the electric polarization which is dependent on the stacking pattern alters the band alignment and catalytic activity of the heterostructures. The relatively strong interfacial nonadiabatic coupling and long quantum coherence time accelerate the interlayer carrier recombination, enabling a direct Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism. More importantly, the redox ability of the remanent photogenerated carriers in the Z scheme is strong enough to trigger both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (OER) simultaneously without the help of sacrificial agents. Our work reveals a fundamental understanding of ultrafast charge carrier dynamics at vdW heterointerfaces as well as new design prospects for highly efficient direct Z-scheme photocatalysts.

Abstract:Solar‐driven high‐value utilization of biomass and its derivatives has attracted tremendous attention in replacing fossil sources to generate chemicals. Developing high‐performance photocatalysts to selectively catalyze bio‐platform molecules remains a challenge. Herein, biomass‐based 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was efficiently and selectively photooxidized to 2, 5‐diformylfuran (DFF) using a metal‐free polyimide (PI). PI with moderate photooxidation capacity delivered high DFF selectivity of 91% and high apparent quantum efficiency of 1.13%, nearly 7 times higher than that of graphitic carbon nitride. Experimental measurements and theoretical calculations revealed that the band structure and photooxidation capability of PI can be continuously modulated by varying the molar ratio of amine and anhydride. Mechanism analysis depicted that holes and superoxide radicals play crucial roles in the efficient photooxidation of HMF to DFF. This work provides guidance on designing efficient polymeric photocatalysts for oxidating biomass and its derivatives to value‐added chemicals.

Bandgap Modulation of Polyimide Photocatalyst for Optimum H2 Production Activity under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:A series of polyimide photocatalysts with different polymerization degrees were prepared by thermal condensation of melamine and pyromellitic dianhydride at different condensation temperatures between 250 degrees C and 350 degrees C. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the polymerization degree increased with increasing condensation temperature. UV-Vis absorption spectra showed that the bandgap energy was lineally decreased with the increase of temperature. The theoretical calculations indicated that the level of conduction band downshifted and valence band upshifted upon the bandgap narrowing. Photocatalytic results displayed that the sample with moderate bandgap exhibited the highest H-2 evolution activity, which adapted the balance among many factors such as light absorption, band potentials, crystallinity, particle size and surface area. Bandgap Engineering of Organic Semiconductors for Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:The bandgap engineering of semiconductors, in particular low‐cost organic/polymeric photocatalysts could directly influence their behavior in visible photon harvesting. However, an effective and rational pathway to stepwise change of the bandgap of an organic/polymeric photocatalyst is still very challenging. An efficient strategy is demonstrated to tailor the bandgap from 2.7 eV to 1.9 eV of organic photocatalysts by carefully manipulating the linker/terminal atoms in the chains via innovatively designed polymerization. These polymers work in a stable and efficient manner for both H2 and O2 evolution at ambient conditions (420 nm < λ < 710 nm), exhibiting up to 18 times higher hydrogen evolution rate (HER) than a reference photocatalyst g‐C3N4 and leading to high apparent quantum yields (AQYs) of 8.6%/2.5% at 420/500 nm, respectively. For the oxygen evolution rate (OER), the optimal polymer shows 19 times higher activity compared to g‐C3N4 with excellent AQYs of 4.3%/1.0% at 420/500 nm. Both theoretical modeling and spectroscopic results indicate that such remarkable enhancement is due to the increased light harvesting and improved charge separation. This strategy thus paves a novel avenue to fabricate highly efficient organic/polymeric photocatalysts with precisely tunable operation windows and enhanced charge separation.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting has been studied as a clean and sustainable method for hydrogen production. To efficiently utilize solar energy, it is essential to develop materials with high quantum efficiency as well as the ability to use light across a broad range of wavelengths and stability as photocatalysts. Here, we review layered oxyhalides photocatalsts for water splitting with a particular emphasis on band structure control. The unique feature of these materials including Sillén and Sillén-Aurivillius oxyhalides is their remarkably high oxygen band, allowing them to exhibit both visible light responsiveness and photocatalytic stability unlike the conventional mixed anion compounds, which show good light absorption, but frequently encounter the stability issues. For band structure control, simple strategies effective in mixed-anion compounds, such as anion substitution forming high energy p orbitals in accordance with its electronegativity, is not effective for oxyhalides with high oxygen bands. We overview key concepts for band structure control of oxyhalide photocatalysts such as lone-pair interactions and electrostatic interactions. The control of the band structure of inorganic solid materials is a crucial challenge across a wide range of materials chemistry fields, and the insight obtained by the development of oxyhalide photocatalysts are expected to provide knowledge for diverse materials chemistry.

Enhanced photocarrier separation in conjugated polymer engineered CdS for direct Z-scheme photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:High efficiency hydrogen generation from water has been achieved in sulfide-polymer heterojunction. In this work, a novel direct Z-scheme CdS/polyimide heterojunction was fabricated by in situ growth of CdS nanoparticles on polyimide (PI) ultrathin nanosheets through solvothermal method. The highest activity achieved on 15%CdS/PI sample reaches to H-2-production rate of 613 mol h(-1) g(-1) under visible-light irradiation, which is nearly 5 and 60 times higher than that of neat CdS and 1%Pt/PI. Most importantly, the excellent photostability is also achieved over 15% CdS/PI. The enhanced photocatalytic performance and photostability can be attributed to the direct Z-scheme charge transfer in the intimate interfacial between CdS and PI, which accelerates the charges separation and effective suppress of the photocorrosion in CdS/PI heterojunction. The direct Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism is evidenced by in-situ XPS analysis and time-resolved fluorescence (TRPL) decay. This work highlights the role of polymer in constructing efficient sulfide/polymer heterojunction photocatalyst.

Abstract:Photocatalysts based on semiconducting conjugated polymers have shown great potential in solar-driven water splitting. The synthetic conjugated polymers offer great versability to design photocatalyts with suitable electronic structures for photocatalytic reactions. So far much efforts have been devoted to developing semiconducting conjugated polymers for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. However, conjugated polymers that are able to efficiently split pure water under visible light (>400 nm) via a four-electron pathway have been proved to be challenging. We show that 1,3-diyne-linked conjugated polymer nanosheets obtained by oxidative coupling of terminal alkynes such as 1,3,5-tris-(4-ethynylphenyl)-benzene (TEPB) and 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene (TEB) are possessing suitable band structures for photocatalytic overall water splitting and can act as highly efficient photocatalysts for splitting pure water (pH~7) into stoichiometric amounts of H2 and O2 under visible light irradiation. We also reveal that these conjugated polymers are indeed able to split pure water via first-principles calculations. Using in situ techniques, we could further elucidate the molecular intermediates that are formed during the photocatalytic process, providing strong evidence that the water splitting reaction could occur on the surface of polymer photocatalysts. We believe that our study could provide new insights in design and synthesis of semiconductors that are able to catalyze overall water splitting at neutral pH with sunlight as the only energy input.
Unraveling the Photocatalytic Water Dissociation Pathways on Two‐Dimensional Conjugated Polymers

Abstract:Understanding the water dissociation pathways on polymer photocatalysts is critically important for developing new conjugated polymers toward solar fuel generation by virtue of their diverse bond-forming reactions. Until now, the detailed reaction pathways on the surface active sites of polymer photocatalysts still remain unknown. Herein, we employed in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) to unravel the water dissociation pathways on two-dimensional 1,3-diyne-linked conjugated polymers synthesized via oxidative coupling of 1,3,5-tris-(4-ethynylphenyl)-benzene and 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene. In addition, we also used quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) to further validate the results obtained from DRIFTS. In this way, several crucial intermediates formed during photocatalytic water splitting were identified and can be correlated to the computational results. It is shown that the water dissociation pathways are different for different polymers, exemplifying the significance of structural control in developing polymer photocatalysts. This study not only provides significant insights into the microscopic processes of the water splitting reaction catalyzed by metal-free polymer photocatalysts but also offers essential principles for future development of metal-free polymer photocatalysts toward solar-to-chemical energy conversion.

Abstract:Photocatalysis technology is an economical and effective new energy technology which depends on the conversion and storage of light energy through an energy transfer process or charge transfer process. Recently, organic semiconductor photocatalytic materials with the advantages of controllable structure, broad spectral response, designability, and flexibility have received wide attention. In particular, the organic polymeric materials containing poly-perylene diimides (PDI) show significant promise in the realm of photocatalysis due to their impressive catalytic capabilities and wide spectral reactivity. However, a poor charge separation and transportation (CST) process undermines their photocatalytic efficiency in most polymer photocatalysts, as well as in PDI photocatalysts. In this context, we propose a new strategy through regulating the monomer symmetry to construct highly efficient PDI photocatalysts. As proof-of-concept, a series of new PDI-based organic supramolecular photocatalytic materials with full visible spectral response from the perspectives of both the π-π conjugated structure and the symmetry of chain structure are successfully synthesized. Meanwhile, the structural compositions, morphology features, electrical properties, and photocatalytic performances of those obtained PDI photocatalysts were systematically studied. The results shown that the as-prepared PDI-1,5NDA exhibits 1.6-fold and 3.7-fold higher levels of photosynthesis of H2O2 activity than those of PDI-1,4NDA and PDI-PDA, respectively, which could be ascribe to its lower symmetry and large π-conjugate systems greatly enhances the separation of charge carriers.

Mesoporous Polymeric Cyanamide-Triazole-Heptazine Photocatalysts for Highly-Efficient Water Splitting.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers are promising light harvesters for water reduction/oxidation due to their simple synthesis and adjustable bandgap. Herein, both cyanamide and triazole functional groups are first incorporated into a heptazine-based carbon nitride (CN) polymer, resulting in a mesoporous conjugated cyanamide-triazole-heptazine polymer (CTHP) with different compositions by increasing the quantity of cyanamide/triazole units in the CN backbone. Varying the compositions of CTHP modulates its electronic structures, mesoporous morphologies, and redox energies, resulting in a significantly improved photocatalytic performance for both H2 and O2 evolution under visible light irradiation. A remarkable H2 evolution rate of 12723 µmol h-1 g-1 is observed, resulting in a high apparent quantum yield of 11.97% at 400 nm. In parallel, the optimized photocatalyst also exhibits an O2 evolution rate of 221 µmol h-1 g-1 , 9.6 times higher than the CN counterpart, with the value being the highest among the reported CN-based bifunctional photocatalysts. This work provides an efficient molecular engineering approach for the rational design of functional polymeric photocatalysts.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers featuring tunable band gaps/positions and tailored active centers, are attractive photoelectrode materials for water splitting. However, their exploration falls far behind their inorganic counterparts. Herein, we demonstrate a molecular engineering strategy for the tailoring aromatic units of conjugated acetylenic polymers from benzene- to thiophene-based. The polarized thiophene-based monomers of conjugated acetylenic polymers can largely extend the light absorption and promote charge separation/transport. The C≡C bonds are activated for catalyzing water reduction. Using on-surface Glaser polycondensation, as-fabricated poly(2,5-diethynylthieno[3,2-b]thiophene) on commercial Cu foam exhibits a record H2 -evolution photocurrent density of 370 μA cm-2 at 0.3 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode among current cocatalyst-free organic photocathodes (1-100 μA cm-2 ). This approach to modulate the optical, charge transfer, and catalytic properties of conjugated polymers paves a critical way toward high-activity organic photoelectrodes.
Rational Design of Porous Conjugated Polymers and Roles of Residual Palladium for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Abstract:Developing highly efficient photocatalyts for water splitting is one of the grand challenges in solar energy conversion. Here, we report the rational design and synthesis of porous conjugated polymer (PCP) that photocatalytically generates hydrogen from water splitting. The design mimics natural photosynthetics systems with conjugated polymer component to harvest photons and the transition metal part to facilitate catalytic activities. A series of PCPs have been synthesized with different light harvesting chromophores and transition metal binding bipyridyl (bpy) sites. The photocatalytic activity of these bpy-containing PCPs can be greatly enhanced due to the improved light absorption, better wettability, local ordering structure, and the improved charge separation process. The PCP made of strong and fully conjugated donor chromophore DBD (M4) shows the highest hydrogen production rate at ∼33 μmol/h. The results indicate that copolymerization between a strong electron donor and weak electron acceptor into the same polymer chain is a useful strategy for developing efficient photocatalysts. This study also reveals that the residual palladium in the PCP networks plays a key role for the catalytic performance. The hydrogen generation activity of PCP photocatalyst can be further enhanced to 164 μmol/h with an apparent quantum yield of 1.8% at 350 nm by loading 2 wt % of extra platinum cocatalyst.

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenides are generally considered as highly efficient and cost-effective cocatalysts used in heterostructure-based photocatalysis systems. The electronic structure of the transition metal dichalcogenide is considered as an important parameter that can influence the interfacial charge states of the heterostructure and thereby tune the catalytic performance. Thus, probing the interfacial charge states based on the understanding of the electronic structure is highly desirable to enhance the catalytic performance. Here, a model heterostructure comprising n-type CdS and metallic 1T'-Mo1-xWxS2 nanosheets is established. The interfacial charge states are comprehensively dissected by utilizing synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy, photo-electrochemistry characterization, and density functional theory calculations. As demonstrated, the formation of the Schottky junction leads to the increase of the electron density in the cocatalyst; thus, significantly enhanced catalytic performance is delivered. This survey provides deep insights into the interfacial charge states from the view of high-efficiency photocatalysis systems design.

Abstract:Simultaneously manipulating the nanostructure and band structure of semiconductors for boosting the photocatalytic performance of photocatalyts is highly desirable. Herein, a series of hierarchical sponge-like S-doped poly(heptazine imide) (HS-SPHI) assembled by ultrathin nanosheets were successfully fabricated via a facile bottom-up supramolecular preassembly approach using melamine (MA) and trithiocyanuric acid (TTCA) as precursors. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the S-doping and their unique hierarchical porous structure coupled with quantum confinement effect, the as-obtained HS-SPHIs are endowed with extended visible-light response, improved charge separation efficiency, enlarged specific surface area, and enhanced thermodynamic driving force for water reduction. As a result, all the HS-SPHIs exhibit remarkable boosting visible-light (>420 nm) photocatalytic H 2 evolution (PHE). The maximum PHE rate achieved by HS-SPHI-650 can be up to 3584.2 μmol g −1 h -1 , with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 14.67 % at 420 nm, which is about 22.4 times than that of pristine bulk g-C 3 N 4 (B-GCN). We believe that this work will provide a significant strategy for optimizing the band structure of PCN in order to improve its photocatalytic performance.

Designing Direct Z-Scheme Heterojunctions Enabled by Edge-Modified Phosphorene Nanoribbons for Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Direct Z-scheme photocatalyst possess promising potential to utilize solar radiation for photocatalytic overall water splitting; however, the design and characterization remain challenging. Here, we construct and verify a direct Z-scheme heterojunction using edge-modified phosphorene-nanoribbons (X-PNRs, where X = OH and OCN) with first-principles ground-state and excited-state density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The ground-state calculations provide fundamental properties such as geometric structure and band alignment. The linear-response time-dependent DFT (LR-TDDFT) calculations exhibit the photogenerated charge distribution and demonstrate the generation of interlayer excitons in heterojunctions, which are advantageous to the electron-hole recombination in Z-scheme heterojunctions. The ultrafast charge transfer at the interface studied by time-dependent ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) simulations indicates that interlayer electron-hole recombination is prior to intralayer recombination for the OH/OCN-PNRs heterojunction, showing the characteristics of a Z-scheme heterojunction. Therefore, our computational work provides a universal strategy to design direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting is a highly promising future energy technology. In contrast to the extensive work on particulate photocatalysts, there is still a lack of sufficient investigation for regularized photocatalysts. Here, from perylene diimide polymer (PDIP) and commercial carbon paper (CP), we develop a self-assembled PDIP/CP photocatalyst sheet that is easily scalable and can be used for photocatalytic water oxidation. Driven by strong interfacial π-π interactions, the PDIP spontaneously adsorbs onto the CP, which leads to a narrowed band gap, down-shifted VB edge, and enhanced separation of the photogenerated charge carriers of the PDIP. Under visible light, the PDIP/CP photocatalyst sheet shows significantly enhanced photocatalytic water oxidation activity (4 h cumulative oxygen evolution is 1.7 times higher than that of the powder-suspended system) and considerable cycling stability. The PDIP/CP photocatalyst sheet has the potential for large-scale device applications.
