Abstract:A dielectric relaxation with a “giant” dielectric constant (ε∼104) at low frequencies and a remaining high ε(∼5×103) background at high frequencies (>1MHz) are observed in Bi doped SrTiO3 ceramics annealed in a reduced atmosphere. The material possesses a very high capacitance-temperature sensitivity at ∼2K, which is much higher than the values reported in the current literature. The giant dielectric constant at low frequencies is attributed to the “Maxwell-Wagner” interfacial polarization based on the study of the complex-impedance spectrum. The remaining high dielectric constant at high frequencies is tentatively attributed to the “electron-relaxation mode” coupling polarization.

Abstract:Ceramic composites made up of well-selected components have enriched the varieties of the metamaterials with negative electromagnetic parameters. In this work, TiN/BaTiO3 ceramic composites were prepared with a simple dry-pressing and pressureless sintering process. Percolation was eventually determined to be the key inducements which caused the permittivity of the ceramic composites changing from positive to negative. Essentially, negative permittivity was closely related to the plasma oscillations of free electrons in percolation networks. Meanwhile, conduction mechanism of the composites varied owing to the changes in microstructure, where the percolation networks brought out pathways for electron migration and achieved high conductivity. In addition, ac impedance behavior with changes of the sign for reactance were also discussed, thus the transition from electrical capacitive to inductive for the percolative ceramic composites has been demonstrated. This work clarified the influence of percolation on the conductivity, impedance, and permittivity of ceramic composites altogether. The obtained negative permittivity composites have enormous potential in various electronic devices and electromagnetic apparatus.

Abstract:In this paper, the titanium nitride/copper calcium titanate (TiN/CCTO) composites were prepared by low-temperature sintering. The negative permittivity was observed when TiN content exceeded 50 wt% due to plasma oscillation phenomenon, and the weakly negative permittivity was ascribed to a moderate electron density in TiN/CCTO composites. Meanwhile, the alternating current (AC) conduction behavior was transformed from hopping to metal-like along with a skin effect. Furthermore, the equivalent circuit analysis indicated that the positive reactance values were responsible for negative permittivity, leading to the inductive character in TiN/CCTO composites. The fabricated TiN/CCTO binary ceramic composites with tunable and weakly negative permittivity are devoted to promoting the research in novel capacitors and attenuation.

Abstract:Metacomposites with negative permittivity have attracted much attention due to their potential applications in electromagnetic shielding, novel capacitances and sensors. In this work, percolative TiN/Al2O3 ceramic composites with different TiN content were sintered and the dielectric properties were investigated from 5 kHz to 1 MHz. When the filling content of TiN increased from 20 wt% to 30 wt%, percolating phenomenon was observed and TiN grains became interconnected rather than being isolated in Al2O3 ceramic matrix. Meanwhile, electric conductivity of the ceramic composites was enhanced as TiN was incorporated and the conduction mechanism changed from hopping conduction to metal-like conduction. Compared to pure Al2O3 ceramics, the enhancement of permittivity in composites with 10 wt% and 20 wt% TiN was caused by the increased interfacial polarizations, while negative permittivity observed in composites with 30 wt% and 40 wt% TiN was attributed to the plasmonic state of electrons in percolating networks formed by TiN grains. Thus, it’s demonstrated that TiN/Al2O3 binary ceramics can be negative permittivity metacomposites. This work enriched the electromagnetic properties of TiN/Al2O3 ceramic composites.

Abstract:Ceramic-based composites with negative permittivity property can be realized by dielectric resonance or plasma oscillation, but it is still a challenge to integrate two kinds of negative permittivity into a single-phase material. In this study, the La1-x Sr x MnO3 (LSMO) single-phase ceramic (x = 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7) was successfully fabricated by a sol-gel auto-combustion and pressureless sintering method. Just by adjusting the content of Sr2+, the Lorentz-like and Drude-like negative permittivity were simultaneously observed in LSMO ceramic under the synergistic effect of dielectric resonance and plasma oscillation. The amplitude of dielectric resonance was lessened because of the increase of damping factor, and the resonance frequency gradually moved to a lower frequency region with the increase of Sr2+. When the content of Sr2+ reached 0.7, the Drude-like negative permittivity played an overwhelming role due to an enhanced double-exchange effect in La1-x Sr x MnO3. Meanwhile, the tanδ of LSMO was as low as 0.085, which was scarcely observed in previous investigations. The generation and regulation mechanism of negative permittivity was further clarified. This work opened up a way to adjust negative permittivity behavior in single-phase ceramic material which has great value in high-power microwave filters and wireless ring resonators.

Abstract:Ceramic composites with negative permittivity have provoked considerable interests of researchers in electronic and dielectric devices due to the extraordinary electromagnetic performance in radio-frequency (RF) region. Herein, graphene/CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 (GR/CCTO) ceramic composites were spark plasma sintered, of which the dielectric and thermal properties were demonstrated at RF region. An electrical percolation was identified with GR content varying from 10 wt% to 14 wt% which presenting as a dramatic increase of ac conductivity. The conduction mechanism changed from hopping conductivity to metal-like conductivity. Meanwhile, the real permittivity ( ε′ ) turned from positive to negative which indicating an intrinsic transition of dielectric response mechanism. Therefore, Drude model was applied to elucidate the RF negative permittivity ( ε' < 0) which manifesting the low-frequency plasmonic state of delocalized electrons in composites. The constructed GR networks in composites also leaded to the enhanced thermal conductivity due to the dominating contribution of phonon vibration in GR sheets. Besides, theoretical models of capacitive and inductive equivalent circuits were used on impedance spectra which successfully clarified the inductive character of negative permittivity. This work benefits expounding the generation and regulation mechanism of negative permittivity and will be favorable to exploring brand-new applications of ceramic composites.

Abstract:In this research, non-stoichiometric Bi doped SrTiO3 (ST) ceramics with nominal chemical formula of BixSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07) were produced through a conventional solid-state reaction route. A giant permittivity (epsilon) similar to 30000 and low dielectric loss (tan delta) similar to 0.03 were obtained in Bi0.05Sr0.95TiO3 ceramic. The temperature-epsilon and frequency-epsilon plots were conducted to investigate dielectric properties of the ceramics. The results of dielectric property plots revealed that the Bi0.05Sr0.95TiO3 ceramic has excellent dielectric stability within the range of 10(3)-10(6) Hz and 30-250 degree celsius. The fine scan XRD analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and first principles calculation results showed that giant permittivity property of the Bi0.05Sr0.95TiO3 ceramic maybe attributed to the Bi-Ti' - V-O(center dot center dot) - Bi-Ti' defect dipoles caused by Bi anti -occupation doping. And the gradient interface formed by Bi excessive doping also contributed to the giant permittivity. This study offers a new approach for achieving a giant permittivity with low dielectric loss in ST ceramic capacitors.
Experimental realization of tunable negative permittivity in percolative Fe78Si9B13/epoxy composites

Abstract:Negative permittivity is one of the most important properties in the realization of double negative medium or negative index materials. In this paper, tunable negative permittivity in the radio frequency range has been obtained in composites with Fe78Si9B13 amorphous alloy dispersed in an epoxy matrix. The microstructure and dielectric properties of Fe78Si9B13/epoxy composites are investigated in detail. The results indicate that when the Fe78Si9B13 content is beyond the percolation threshold, the plasma oscillation of delocalized electrons in interconnected Fe78Si9B13 leads to negative permittivity. By controlling the effective concentration of free electrons, the negative permittivity of the Fe78Si9B13/epoxy composites could be easily adjusted. Additionally, the frequency dispersion behaviors of the conductivity conform to the Jonscher's power law below percolation threshold, demonstrating that the conductive mechanism is hopping conduction. The realization of tunable negative permittivity in Fe78Si9B13/epoxy composites gives a new and high-efficient way toward double negative materials.

Abstract:Ceramic composites with negative permittivity have attracted widespread attention during the development of novel electromagnetic metamaterials. Herein, carbon nanotubes/TiN/CaCu3Ti4O12 (CNTs/TiN/CaCu3Ti4O12) ternary composites were prepared, and the effects of dual fillers on the dielectric properties of the ternary composites are discussed. The electrical conductivity increased markedly, and the conduction mechanism changed owing to the percolation of the dual conductor fillers. The switching of the reactance, from negative to positive, suggests that the ternary composites underwent a capacitive-inductive transition. The dielectric permittivity was negative owing to the plasmonic state of the free electrons in the percolating conductor fillers. Regulating the electron concentration by changing the filler content or adjusting the microstructure by changing the relative content of the dual fillers proved to be an effective way to tailor the negative permittivity performance of ternary composites. In addition, conduction loss dominated the dielectric loss mechanism of the negative permittivity composites. The realization and regulation mechanism of the negative permittivity of ternary composites are clarified, shedding light on the preparation and development of negative permittivity materials for various electromagnetic applications.

Abstract:Stimulated by the outstanding colossal permittivity behavior achieved in trivalent and pentavalent cations co-doped rutile TiO2 ceramics, the co-doping effects on the dielectric behavior of Ba0.4Sr0.6TiO3 ceramics were further explored. In this work, (Al + Nb) co-doped Ba0.4Sr0.6TiO3 ceramics were synthesized via a standard solid state ceramic route. The structural evolution was analyzed using X-ray diffraction patterns and Raman spectra. Dense microstructures with no apparent change of grain morphology were observed from the scanning electron microscopy. A huge enhancement of dielectric permittivity was obtained with 1 mol% (Al + Nb) doping and excellent dielectric performances (epsilon(r) similar to 20,000, tan delta similar to 0.06 at 1 kHz) were achieved after further heat treatment. The formation of electron pinned defect dipoles localized in grains may account for the optimization of dielectric behaviors and the corresponding chemical valence states were confirmed from the XPS results.

Abstract:We, herein, reported a giant positive dielectric tunability of similar to 70% at room temperature under an applied field of 200 V/cm in nominally pure Na1/2Bi1/2Cu3Ti4O12 ceramics. Our results reveal that both Schottky and Langevin effects have contribution to this tunability. 10% Bi-overdose switches the positive dielectric tunability to a giant negative dielectric tunability. Hopping oxygen vacancies blocked by the electrode yielding the so-called electrode polarization is believed to be responsible for the negative dielectric tunability. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Negative permittivity of materials can be obtained by plasma oscillation or dielectric resonance, but the relationship between these two negative permittivity behaviors has been neglected. Combining the advantages of two negative permittivity behaviors, the negative permittivity can be more tunable and is expected to realize epsilon-near-zero behavior. In this work, percolative bismuth ferrite/silver composites with different contents of Ag were successfully fabricated by a simple solid-state sintering method. With the addition of Ag, the Lorentz-like and Drude-like negative permittivity behaviors were successively observed in bismuth ferrite/silver composites. The reasons for the two types of negative permittivity behaviors are dielectric resonance and plasma oscillation, respectively. Further investigation revealed that the synergistic effect of dipole resonance and free electrons led to a change of resonance frequency, a decrease of magnitude, and a transition of two negative permittivity behaviors. Moreover, with the addition of Ag in percolative bismuth ferrite/silver composites, the electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity changed abruptly at a certain volume fraction, suggesting a percolation behavior.

Abstract:Referring to the original envisage of Ti3SiC2/copper calcium titanate metacomposites, negative permittivity property depends on low-frequency collective plasma oscillation of free electrons in formed conductive Ti3SiC2 networks. It’s confirmed that a transition from hopping conduction to metallic conduction behavior of metacomposites is related to the percolative evolution from isolated Ti3SiC2 fillers to interconnected networks. In typical, the dielectric permittivity value was feasibly tuned by varying Ti3SiC2 content. The positive reactance of epsilon-negative materials indicates that inductive character is one of their inherent natures.

Abstract:Recently, the negative index materials (NIMs), also called double negative materials (DNMs) are receiving an increasing attention due to their many unique electromagnetic properties and attractive applications prospect. DNMs are now well established in “artificial” metamaterials, but it remains a challenge from the perspective of “natural” materials, especially in single phase materials. Herein, the La1−xSrxMnO3 (LSMO, x=0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) ceramics with different Sr mole ratio (x) were prepared by combining the sol–gel process with auto-combustion, followed by cold-pressing and sintering. The dielectric properties of LSMO were studied at frequency ranges from 104Hz to 108Hz. The negative permittivity was realized, and the permittivity and ac conductivity were drastically tuned by the Sr-doping effect. Experimental results and theoretical simulation results indicate that the negative permittivity is attributed to the Lorentz resonance (x=0.1) and the plasma oscillation (x>0.1), respectively. It is further found that the doping elements tune the permittivity by adjusting the concentration of the effective electrons, which is further supported by the frequency dependences of the conductivity (σ′ac–f).
Weakly negative permittivity of MWCNT/TiN/CCTO ternary ceramics sintered in argon and nitrogen atmosphere

Abstract:When seeking for satisfactory metacomposites with negative permittivity behavior, an important factor which should be taken into consideration is how to realize a weakly negative permittivity (less than 100). A novel strategy has been proposed accordingly to prepare ternary multiwalled carbon nanotubes/titanium nitride/copper calcium titanate (MWCNT/TiN/CCTO) composites by a facile sintering method in an inert atmosphere. The negative permittivity was observed after the TiN-MWCNT network was constructed among the composites. TiN provided sufficient free electrons and MWCNT were regarded as transporter bridge. Under the synergistic effect of TiN and MWCNT, the negative permittivity decreased by several orders of magnitude owing to the dilution of overall electron density in the resulting composites. Exceptionally, when the permittivity switched from positive to negative along with a resonance, a Lorentz-like negative permittivity was observed in low frequency region. Meanwhile, the Drude-like negative permittivity derived from plasma oscillation was also observed in the higher frequency region. Further investigation confirmed that the permittivity was closely related to the reactance. The positive-negative reactance transition was consistent with the negative-positive permittivity transition, and the epsilon-near-zero was achieved near the zero-crossing point of permittivity. Moreover, the influence of different sintering atmospheres (nitrogen and argon) on the negative permittivity behavior was also explored. This work provides an effective approach for the realization of weakly negative permittivity, and presents, to our knowledge, the first investigation into the influence of sintering atmosphere on negative permittivity.

Abstract:The physical properties of conductor–insulator composites often take dramatic changes near the percolation threshold (fc), leading to interesting applications, such as double negative material. This phenomenon also will be enlarged by increasing the differences between the properties of the constitutive phases. In this paper, the Fe50Ni50/Al2O3 magnetic cermets with different Fe50Ni50 volume contents (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%) were prepared via hot-pressing sintering. The permittivity of Fe50Ni50/Al2O3 composites has been studied in the radio frequency range. The results indicate that when the Fe50Ni50 content is below fc, the reactance of the composites takes a negative value, which indicates a capacitive character. The metallic Fe50Ni50 grains are isolated in the insulating ceramic matrix, leading to an insulator-like dielectric property. When the volume fraction of Fe50Ni50 reaches 40% which is above fc, the composites manifest an inductive character. In this case, the negative permittivity has been obtained over the whole test frequency range due to the percolation phenomenon, which makes Fe50Ni50/Al2O3 composites as promising candidates for double negative materials.

Abstract:Perovskite-phase (1 − x)Ba0.5Bi0.5FeO3 − xGd2O3 ceramics with negative temperature coefficient (NTC) were synthesized by solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements showed that all samples exhibited a tetragonal perovskite structure. In addition, all samples showed a typical NTC effect; their room resistivity ρ 25 and thermal constant B 25/75 were regulated by the Gd2O3 doping content, and varied in the 4.70 × 105–4.72 × 106 Ω cm and 5573–6697 K ranges, respectively. In situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) elucidated the conduction mechanism of Ba0.5Bi0.5FeO3-based ceramics was the electron hopping type, and the source of NTC effect was the change in the content of different valence ion pairs and the increase in electronic mobility with increasing temperature. Impedance analysis showed that the samples were electrically inhomogeneous, and their grain boundary resistance was higher than the grain resistance. The corresponding relaxation process might originate from the release of space charge and the ionization of oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:Ceramic-based dielectrics with high permittivity have extensive applications in energy storage, electronic devices, communication, and other fields. However, ceramics with high permittivity based on the classical percolation theory design often have a substantial dielectric loss. To address this contradiction, we designed a sandwich structure with a negative dielectric layer. The sandwich structure comprises BaTiO 3 /Ag ceramics with different silver contents. The intermediate layer of the sandwich structure is composed of materials with negative permittivity, and adding a negative- ε layer enhances the interfacial polarization, increasing permittivity. More importantly, the multi-layer structure hinders the formation of conductive paths along the electric field direction between layers, positively suppressing dielectric loss. When the permittivity reaches 8000, the dielectric loss still does not exceed 0.02. This work provides a new approach to designing dielectric ceramics with high permittivity and low dielectric loss.

Abstract:Colossal permittivity (CP) materials have many important applications in electronics but their development is generally hindered due to the difficulty in achieving a relatively low dielectric loss. In this work, based on the electron-pinned defect-dipole and internal barrier layer capacitance (IBLC) theory, we designed to add Bi2O3 to (Eu0.5Nb0.5)(0.01)Ti0.9O2 (ENTO) ceramics to obtain high performance CP materials. The dielectric loss can be reduced down to 0.017 at 1 kHz and room temperature, while the permittivity is kept at a relatively high value (2.7 x 10(4)). At the same time, the temperature and frequency stability can also be improved. More importantly, the mechanism of decreasing dielectric loss is studied. It is finding that the decrease of dielectric loss is closely associated with the enhanced localized behavior of conduction process at grain boundary. The addition of Bi2O3 can increase the grain boundary resistance and grain-boundary activation energy of the ceramics, which make the conductive behavior of the grain boundaries more difficult, resulting in decreasing the dielectric loss and improve the temperature stability of the ceramics.
