Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:This white paper responds to the Voyage 2050 Call for White Papers from the Science Programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) and argues that education, communication and public engagement (hereafter EPE) should have priority in the Voyage 2050 planning cycle. The ESA Science's Voyage 2050 missions promise insights into the big existential questions of our era: the prevalence of life in the Universe; the nature of space and time; and the intertwined nature of matter, energy and gravity. It is likely that innovations in the acquisition, handling and processing of vast data sets will drive these themes to scientific maturity in the next decades. They offer us a timely opportunity to underline the relevance of space sciences to everyday life and thinking. More generally, space science is maturing to the point where it contributes to every major aspect of our cultural discourse. Citizens need information, resources and opportunities to actively participate in that discourse, and ESA Science can provide these. This white paper is a modest attempt to support ESA Science improve its engagement with society. It focuses on issues and topics to improve ESA Science's Education and Public Engagement activities. It does not dwell on the topics that ESA already excels at; hence this White Paper provides a critical review of what should and could be improved. We believe ESA's Voyage 2050 programme teams have a responsibility to represent Europe's social and cultural diversity, and our suggestions are conceived in that spirit: to support ESA Science's complex task of engaging a hugely diverse audience in the complex issues of planning, building and operating fascinating space missions.

Abstract:The European Space Agency is well known as a powerful force for scientific discovery in numerous areas related to Space. The amount and depth of the knowledge produced throughout the different missions carried out by ESA and their contribution to scientific progress is enormous, involving large collections of documents like scientific publications, feasibility studies, technical reports, and quality management procedures, among many others. Through initiatives like the Open Space Innovation Platform, ESA also acts as a hub for new ideas coming from the wider community across different challenges, contributing to a virtuous circle of scientific discovery and innovation. Handling such wealth of information, of which large part is unstructured text, is a colossal task that goes beyond human capabilities, hence requiring automation. In this paper, we present a methodological framework based on artificial intelligence and natural language processing and understanding to automatically extract information from Space documents, generating value from it, and illustrate such framework through several case studies implemented across different functional areas of ESA, including Mission Design, Quality Assurance, Long-Term Data Preservation, and the Open Space Innovation Platform. In doing so, we demonstrate the value of these technologies in several tasks ranging from effortlessly searching and recommending Space information to automatically determining how innovative an idea can be, answering questions about Space, and generating quizzes regarding quality procedures. Each of these accomplishments represents a step forward in the application of increasingly intelligent AI systems in Space, from structuring and facilitating information access to intelligent systems capable to understand and reason with such information.

Abstract:Since 1990, the United Nations in cooperation with the European Space Agency is holding annually a workshop on basic space science for the benefit of the worldwide development of astronomy. These workshops have been held in countries of Asia and the Pacific (India, Sri Lanka), Latin America and the Caribbean (Costa Rica, Colombia, Honduras), Africa (Nigeria), Western Asia (Egypt, Jordan), and Europe (Germany, France). Additional to the scientific benefits of the workshops and the strengthening of international cooperation, the workshops lead to the establishment of astronomical telescope facilities in Colombia, Egypt, Honduras, Jordan, Morocco, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Uruguay. The annual UN/ESA Workshops continue to pursue an agenda to network these astronomical telescope facilities through similar research and education programmes. Teaching material and hands-on astrophysics material has been developed for the operation of such astronomical telescope facilities in an university environment.

This highlights the potential of Key Action 2 of the ERASMUS+ programme to support projects international educational projects, as well as the great impact that such projects can have on the general public and on the continued development of early career researchers.

Abstract:This article is derived from the development of educational activities in astronomy, with a view to encouraging the training of future researchers. The goal is to present how the participation of students from EEEM <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Dr.Silva" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> Mello took place in the Mostra de Astronomia do ES (MAES), and how that promoted their involvement and participation in the three types of education, formal, informal and non-formal, highlighting the articulation between them. In order to train citizens with interests for development of scientific research on astronomical themes, developing a taste for the search for knowledge and to motivate this action, we form groups to present works at MAES, used as a non-formal education space . The event included the presentation of works, lectures and prizes. As a result, one of the works presented by the students was awarded. Informal education has gained special relevance, when students discussed science, bringing it to their daily lives

Abstract:Art and science are different ways of exploring the world, but together they have the potential to be thought-provoking, facilitate a science-society dialogue, raise public awareness of science, and develop an understanding of art. For several years, we have been teaching an astro-animation class at the Maryland Institute College of Art as a collaboration between students and NASA scientists. Working in small groups, the students create short animations based on the research of the scientists who are going to follow the projects as mentors. By creating these animations, students bring the power of their imagination to see the research of the scientists through a different lens. Astro-animation is an undergraduate-level course jointly taught by an astrophysicist and an animator. In this paper we present the motivation behind the class, describe the details of how it is carried out, and discuss the interactions between artists and scientists. We describe how such a program offers an effective way for art students, not only to learn about science but to have a glimpse of "science in action". The students have the opportunity to become involved in the process of science as artists, as observers first and potentially through their own art research. Every year, one or more internships at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center have been available for our students in the summer. Two students describe their experiences undertaking these internships and how science affects their creation of animations for this program and in general. We also explain the genesis of our astro-animation program, how it is taught in our animation department, and we present the highlights of an investigation of the effectiveness of this program we carried out with the support of an NEA research grant. In conclusion we discuss how the program may grow in new directions, such as contributing to informal STE(A)M learning.
ESA Science Programme Missions: Contributions and Exploitation -- ESA Mission Publications

Abstract:We examine over 68,000 refereed publications based on data from 25 missions in the ESA Science Programme and 11 additional missions in which ESA is involved as a junior partner. The publications cover the fields of astronomy, planetary science, and heliophysics and are spread over almost 50 years, spanning the period between the year a mission was launched and the end of 2021. We study the number of papers as a function of time and the evolution of several metrics, including citations and other indices. We also investigate the geographical distribution of the authors, and for ESA Member States we correlate the various indices with the level of financial contribution of the individual countries to the ESA Science Programme. We find that in general the involvement of the scientific communities in the various Member States follows the distribution expected from the countries' gross domestic products, with communities in some field and countries, both large and small, being particularly effective at turning data into scientific discoveries. We also analyse the differences between papers written by investigators directly involved in the provision of the payloads or in the definition of the scientific projects and those written by other scientists not directly involved in the process. We find that the latter, the so-called "archival papers", represent more than 50\,\% of the literature based on data from ESA Space Science missions, and have a similar impact on the literature in the respective fields, as judged by the number of citations. This highlights the importance of sharing and preserving the scientific data produced by the missions.

Abstract:Abstract The development of environmental science agency (ESA) is considered very important for the sustainability and conservation of the environment and the safeguarding of the cultural heritage. It is enhanced through experiential programmes and participatory actions that shape future environmental behaviour. ESA consists of three components: knowledge, role development and agency about the environment and the current issues affecting it. The present research was designed to explore how an environmental entrepreneurship intervention programme with primary school students can promote the development of their ESA. The study involved 34 primary students, aged 11–12, who participated in an environmental entrepreneurship educational programme. It follows a mixed methods design using quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis, namely pre- and post-students’ questionnaires and teachers’ interviews. The results indicate the development of knowledge and roles components, while the third component, agency, seems to diminish. The results of this study seem to be suggesting that late childhood is a good period to invest in the development of ESA, by offering environmental entrepreneurial programmes to students that might leverage their future intentions and willingness in taking action towards the sustainability of the environment and the cultural heritage. Future studies should continue to investigate the relationship between environmental entrepreneurship education and the development of ESA.
ESA Science Programme Missions: Contributions and Exploitation -- Herschel Observing Time Proposals

Abstract:After an introduction to the ESA Herschel Space Observatory including a mission overview, science objectives, results and productivity we examine the process and outcomes of the announcements of observing opportunities (AOs). For Herschel, in common with other ESA observatories, there were no rules, quotas, or guidelines for the allocation of observing time based on the geographical location of the lead proposer's institute, gender, or seniority (academic age); scientific excellence was the most important single factor. We investigate whether and how success rates vary with these (other) parameters. Due to the relatively short operational duration of Herschel -- compared to XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL -- in addition to the pre-launch AO in 2007 there was just two further AOs, in 2010 and 2011. In order to extend the time-frame we compare results with those from the ESA Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) whose time allocation took place approximately 15 years earlier.

Abstract:Abstract Since 2017 the Italian Space Agency (ASI) participates to so-called ‘Alternanza Scuola-Lavoro’ (i.e. ‘school-work synergy’) outreach projects promoted by the Italian government, and the ASI Space Science Data Center (SSDC) actively contributes to them, with the primary aim of bringing students closer to space-related activities before choosing their university studies. The SSDC outreach programme is split into two parts: one theoretical, in which relevant topic are presented and explained, and one practical, consisting of hands-on activities aimed to replicate scientific analysis of real space data. The impact of the programme on students’ attitude is then evaluated by means of questionnaires specifically designed to gather information on the students’ educational background, the level of engagement triggered by the proposed activities, their relevance to school-based activities, and the perceived ease of understanding of the covered topics. As reported in this paper, the analysis of the answers clearly shows that students greatly appreciated this outreach project, supporting its possible expansion and development, even articulated in a more complex pedagogical plan, as already done for one school in a pilot case. Therefore, we plan to expand these activities in the next future both by including new topics (e.g. cosmology, stellar physics), and by proposing new more articulated teaching pathways inclusive of on-site activities in the classroom.

Abstract:The increasing importance of Earth observation information for society and environment, particularly in the expanding domain of hyperspectral remote sensing, along with the significantly increasing data availability, emphasizes the demand for online education to address the growing need for expertise in this domain. We present a comprehensive review of existing online education programs on Earth observation that underline the limited availability of online resources for hyperspectral remote sensing. To respond to this demand, we introduce HYPERedu, an online education program on hyperspectral remote sensing that has been developed as part of the EnMAP satellite mission since 2019. The program's core components, content, and participation statistics, along with insights from participant feedback, are presented. HYPERedu offers a wide range of resources, including slide collections, tutorials, video screencasts, and online courses, making them accessible to a broad audience for university teaching, training schools and individual learning. The program's effectiveness as well as challenges and insights encountered during program development are discussed. We emphasize the importance of collaborative learning, sustainability efforts for long-term material accessibility and quality assurance, and the need to bridge the digital divide with offline options, open-source tools, and multilingual content. Effective content presentation is vital, focusing on consistent branding, concise modules, interactive features, and narrative-style videos. Additionally, we explore the future of online Earth observation learning, considering enhanced participant interaction and the integration of new learning concepts. Finally, we underscore the significance of outreach and training for satellite mission utilization and advocate for open education to promote open science, data, software, and accessibility for inclusive education.

Abstract:We report our experience in bringing science into US and French classrooms. We participated in the US scientific educational program Project ASTRO. It is based on a partnership between a school teacher and an astronomer. They together design and realize simple and interesting scientific activities for the children to learn and enjoy science. We present four hands-on activities we realized in a 4th-grade class (10 yr-old kids) in Tucson (USA) in 2002-2003. Among the covered topics were: the Solar System, the Sun (helioseismology) and the Galaxies. We also present a similar experience done in two classrooms in 2005, in Chatenay-Malabry (France) in partnership with an amateur astronomy association (Aphelie). This is a pleasant and rewarding activity, extremely well appreciated by the children and the school teachers. It furthermore promotes already at a young age the excitement of science, and provides concrete examples of the scientific methodology.

Abstract:One of the most regular activities of amateur clubs is scientific outreach, a paramount channel to disseminate scientific results. It is typically performed through talks given by both experts (professional astronomers) and non-experts to a diverse audience, including amateur astronomers. However, this is a rather passive, one-way, approach. The advance of technology has provided all the tools that can help the audience/amateurs to become more active in the scientific output. What is often missing is the proper guidance. To address that within the Greek amateur community the Hellenic Amateur Astronomy Association materialized a training program (free-of-charge and open-accessed) to develop scientific thought and the practical capabilities for amateurs to produce valuable results. The program ran from November 2014 to May 2015 focusing each session (month) to: the Sun, variable stars, comets, planets, artificial satellites, meteors. A professional and/or an experienced amateur astronomer was leading each session consisting of a theoretical part (highlights of the field, necessary observational techniques) and a hands-on part (observations and data analysis). At least 50 unique participants gained significant experience by following parts or the complete program.

The Planeterrella experiment: from individual initiative to networking

Abstract:Space weather is a relatively new discipline which is generally unknown to the wider public, despite its increasing importance to all of our daily lives. Outreach activities can help in promoting the concept of space weather. In particular the visual beauty and excitement of the aurora make these lights a wonderful inspirational hook. A century ago Norwegian experimental physicist Kristian Birkeland, one of the founding fathers of modern space science, demonstrated with his Terrella experiment the formation of the aurora. Recently a modernised version of the Terrella has been designed. This Planeterrella experiment is very flexible, allowing the visualization of many phenomena occurring in our space environment. Although the Planeterrella was originally designed to be small to be demonstrated locally by a scientist, the Planeterrella has proved to be a very successful public outreach experiment. We believe that its success is due to two main factors (i) the Planeterrella is not patented and the plans are given freely to any public institution and (ii) the advertisement does not rely on press release, books or web sites but mainly on National and European scientific networks such as COST ES 0803. Today, nine Planeterrellas are operating or under construction in four different countries, and more are in the pipleline. In five years, about 50,000 people in Europe have been able to see live demonstrations of the formation of auroral lights, picture the space environment and get an introduction to space weather with this experiment. Many more have seen the Planeterrella demonstrated on TV shows. This paper presents the process that led to the making of the Planeterrella and proposes some lessons learned from it.

The International Space Station (ISS) Contest as STEM Educational Project

Abstract:In the years 2015-2018, the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research and the Italian Ministry of Defense proposed the joint initiative "Space for Your Future. The ISS: Innovatio, Scientia, Sapientia" in partnership with the Italian Space Agency. It was a competition addressed to secondary school students and aimed at developing innovative experiments to be conducted on the International Space Station, whose acronym (ISS) is the same of the Latin words "Innovatio, Scientia, Sapientia". Regardless of the odds of winning, "Space for Your Future" became a successful STEM educational project implemented in numerous schools. We illustrate how that Astronomy contest fostered a valid constructivist learning, a fruitful participatory science, and vast scientific research. We discuss, in particular, the activities of two teams of pupils from the Scientific High School "Giovanni Battista Grassi" in Latina (seat of the Planetarium "Livio Gratton") who participated within the thematic area No. 3 "Test the Sciences in Space". They all worked on chemical tests, suitable for the ISS microgravity, under the tutoring of Francesco Giuliano (Province Manager of the IYA 2009 and the IYC 2011 in Latina). The key reference is a talk given in the 104th annual congress of the Italian Physical Society at the University of Calabria (September 17-21, 2018) together with an invited lecture held in the 13th European Researchers' Night by Frascati Scienza (September 28, 2018).

Teaching the apparent motion of Sun and stars across four European countries

Abstract:In the context of the European Erasmus+ project Teaching ASTronomy at the Educational level (TASTE), we investigated the extent to which a learning module at school and a set of activities during a planetarium visit help students to gain insight in the Apparent Motion of the Sun and Stars. Therefore, we have set up a two treatment study with a pretest posttest design. In the four participating countries (Belgium, Germany, Greece and Italy), secondary school students studied the concept of the celestial globe at school using newly designed learning materials. By using a latent class analysis, we identified different classes of student answers on the AMoSS test. We show how students evolve from one class to another between pretest and posttest. Overall the results of the pretest and posttest show that a good understanding of the different aspects of the apparent motion of celestial bodies is difficult to achieve.

ESA Science Programme Missions: Contributions and Exploitation -- Payload Provision

Abstract:We have collected data pertaining to the Principal Investigators (PIs), and co-PIs (where appropriate) for all ESA-led Science Directorate missions since the first such launch, namely of COS-B in 1975. For a total of 28 missions (including 4 in preparation awaiting launch), 437 individuals have been recorded along with their institution, location, academic age and gender. We have correlated the number of PIs by country with the financial contribution of those countries to the ESA Science programme. We have also investigated issues associated with age and gender of the PIs. As a result of these analyses, we make suggestions for actions which ESA and its Member States may wish to consider with the aim of encouraging equity and diversity while still placing scientific excellence as the overarching goal.

Abstract:Since 1988, the United Nations, through the Programme on Space Applications, is supporting the establishment and operation of regional Centres for Space Science and Technology Education in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Western Asia. Simultaneously, education curricula have been developed for remote sensing and geographic information system, satellite communications, satellite meteorology and global climate, and space and atmospheric science. The paper reviews briefly these developments and highlights the most recent updated education curricula in the four disciplines that are made available in 2002, in the six official languages of the United Nations, for implementation at the regional Centres and beyond.
