Abstract:Mechanically robust polyacrylonitrile/alumina (PAN/Al2O3) composite membranes were fabricated by electrospinning mixed solution of PAN and Al2O3 nanoparticles. The as-prepared composite membranes of a three-dimensional network based on uniform polymeric interconnected structures exhibit excellent mechanical properties along with high porosity (~64%), high electrolyte uptake (~470%) and good relative absorption ratio (~62% of the initial absorption). The introduced Al2O3 nanoparticles significantly improved the electrolyte compatibility, thermal properties and wettability of membranes. The fabricated PAN/Al2O3–triethylene glycol diacetate–2-propenoic acid butyl ester (PAN/Al2O3–TEGDA–BA) gel electrolytes via immersing membranes in TEGDA–BA show high ionic conductivity up to 2.35×10−3Scm−1 at 25°C, coupled with high electrochemical stability (>4.5V vs. Li/Li+). The half-cells based on Li[Li1/6Ni1/4Mn7/12]O7/4F1/4 electrodes demonstrate remarkably stable charge/discharge performance and excellent capacity retention of ~240.4mAhg−1 (0.1C) after 50 cycles with a cut-off voltage of 4.8V. The results suggest a facile strategy for scalable fabrication of high-performance polymer electrolyte membranes in high-voltage lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:In this paper, the composite membranes based on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with different amounts of halloysite (HNT) nano-filler were prepared by phase inversion method for the application of lithium ion batteries. The effect of the content of HNT on the crystallinity and morphology of the composite membranes were investigated. The results showed that the crystallization behaviors of the HNT/PVDF composite membranes were reduced with the increase of HNT filler content. Furthermore, the introduction of HNT into PVDF matrix remarkably affected the formation rate of nuclei which could evolve into pores to change surface morphology. The HNT/PVDF composite membranes showed the sufficient porosity and good affinity between the eletrolyte as well as the electrode, which led to superb electrolyte uptake and low interfacial impedance. Among HNT/PVDF composite membranes, in particular, the 4-HNT/PVDF composite membrane with 4 wt% HNT content had a great electrolyte uptake (430.2%), superior electrochemical stability window (4.5 V), high ionic conductivity (2.4 mS/cm), and low interfacial impedance (63 Omega). The cells assembled with the 4-HNT/PVDF composite membranes obtain discharge capacities of 164.72 mAh/g (0.1C) and 134.88 mAh/g (2C), corresponding to 96.89% and 79.34% of the theoretical capacity of LiFePO4 (170 mAh/g), respectively, better cycle performance (with capacity retention 89.12% after 100 cycles) at 0.5C and excellent rate performance. It is concluded that the content of HNT deeply affects membrane performance. Therefore, the 4-HNT/PVDF composite membranes could be a good option of high performance lithium ion batteries. Abstract:Composite fibrous membranes based on poly(acrylonitrile)(PAN)-poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC) have been prepared by electrospinning. The fibrous membranes are made up of fibers of 850- to 1,300-nm diameters. These fibers are stacked in layers to produce a fully interconnected pore structure. Polymer electrolytes were prepared by immersing the fibrous membranes in 1 M LiClO4-PC solution for 60 min. The condition of pure PAN polymer electrolytes is jelly, which has poor mechanical performance and cannot be used. But when PVC with a good mechanical stiffener was added to PAN, the condition of composite PAN–PVC polymer electrolytes becomes free-standing. In addition, the optimum electrochemical properties have been observed for the polymer electrolyte based on PAN–PVC (8:2, w/w) to show ionic conductivity of 1.05 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 25 °C, anodic stability up to 4.9 V versus Li/Li+, and a good compatibility with lithium metal resulting in low interfacial resistance. The promising results showed that fibrous PEs based on PAN–PVC (8:2, w/w) have good mechanical stability and electrochemical properties. This shows a great potential application in polymer lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Lithium lanthanum titanate oxide (LLTO)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) submicron composite fiber-based membranes were prepared by electrospinning dispersions of LLTO ceramic particles in PAN solutions. These ionic-conducting LLTO/PAN composite fiber-based membranes can be directly used as lithium-ion battery separators due to their unique porous structure. Ionic conductivities were evaluated after soaking the electrospun LLTO/PAN composite fiber-based membranes in a liquid electrolyte, 1M lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) in ethylene carbonate (EC)/ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) (1:1 vol). It was found that, among membranes with various LLTO contents, 15wt.% LLTO/PAN composite fiber-based membranes provided the highest ionic conductivity, 1.95×10−3Scm−1. Compared with pure PAN fiber membranes, LLTO/PAN composite fiber-based membranes had greater liquid electrolyte uptake, higher electrochemical stability window, and lower interfacial resistance with lithium. In addition, lithium//1M LiPF6/EC/EMC//lithium iron phosphate cells containing LLTO/PAN composite fiber-based membranes as the separator exhibited high discharge specific capacity of 162mAhg−1 and good cycling performance at 0.2C rate at room temperature.
Porous PAN micro/nanofiber separators for enhanced lithium-ion battery performance

Abstract:In this study, as spun porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) micro/nanofiber membranes were produced by electrospinning a ternary system of PAN/N, N‑dimethylformamide (DMF)/water. The initiation of interconnected porous structure was due to the spinodal phase separation that happened during the electrospinning. In a further step, non-porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes were prepared with a similar diameter. Afterward, these membranes were utilized as Li-ion battery (LIB) separators. The impacts of membrane porosity on physical, mechanical and electrochemical properties of the porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes have been discovered and compared with the non-porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes and the commercial celgard polypropelene (Celgard PP) separators. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) specific surface area of porous PAN micro/nanofiber membrane was 52.6 m2 g−1. This was 3 times higher than that of non-porous PAN micro/nanofiber membrane under the same conditions. The air permeability value of the porous PAN micro/nanofiber membrane was higher than the non-porous PAN micro/nanofiber membrane and the commercial Celgard PP separator because of higher porosity (83%). The results indicated that the electrolyte-soaked porous PAN micro/nanofiber membrane had greatest ionic conductivity due to considerable porosity and high electrolyte uptake. Also Li(Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3)o2 (NCM)/separator/Li metal half-cell with porous PAN micro/nanofiber membrane had higher discharge capacity than the other cells (130 mAhg−1 at C/10 rate).

Abstract:Flexible core-shell polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs)@Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)/Uio-66-NH 2 () hybrid nanofiber membrane was prepared by coaxial electrospinning technology. PAN polymer and CNTs particles were used as core to improve the membrane structure stability for further ensuring the thermal stability of the separator. PVDF-HFP and Uio-66-NH 2 nanoparticles were applied to reinforce the affinity of separator to electrolyte. The composite membrane delivered high thermal stability and fantastic electrolyte affinity (545.76%). Furthermore, compared with Celgard 2325 commercial membrane, the composite membrane exhibited higher porosity (80.22%) and higher Li + conductivity (3.43 mS/cm), leading to superior rate performance and long-term cycle stability. The cell with the hybrid membrane displayed high specific capacity of 143 mAh/g at 1C and only 0.0259% capacity attenuation of each cycle after 1000 cycles. In addition, the composite membrane demonstrated remarkable flexibility, and the cells with bent separators exhibited outstanding electrochemical performance. Hence, the hybrid nanofiber membrane can pave a way for the further application in the field of secondary batteries separator.

Abstract:With the aim to overcome the high thermal shrinkage of conventional polyolefin separators and improve the electrochemical properties of lithium ion batteries, a nano-composite polymer electrolyte membrane (NCPE) is attempted by introducing highly dispersed nano-TiO2 hybrid doped poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoro propylene) (PVDF-HFP) into a glass fiber nonwoven, which is easily available at low costs. The physical and electrochemical properties of the obtained NCPE are characterized using SEM, thermal shrinkage tests, AC impedance measurements, and charge-discharge and cycling tests. The results show that the NCPE possesses higher porosity and higher thermal dimensional stability temperature than a conventional PP separator. In addition, the electrochemical properties, such as liquid uptake, ionic conductivity and interface compatibility, of the polymer electrolyte membrane and the metallic Li electrode was improved significantly. In particular, the LiCoO2/Li coin cell with NCPE exhibits good Crate performances of up to 85% at 10C-rate of the capacity at 1C-rate, and capacity retention ratios up to 80% after 1500 cycles at 1C/2C charge-discharge cycling. This study shows that the glass fiber nonwoven, which is easily available at low cost, can be a high performance separator for Li-ion battery applications.

Abstract:The porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes with an average diameter of 700–800 nm were produced in one step by electrospinning a ternary system of PAN/DMF/H2O with phase separation mechanism. Also, non-porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes with a similar diameter were prepared. Physical, morphological, mechanical and thermal properties of the porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes were characterized and compared with those of non-porous PAN membranes. Thermal shrinkage of the porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes and the Celgard PP separators were examined to be 15% and 95%, respectively, after treating for 45 min at 200 °C. The porosity impacts of porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes were explored on some of the effective properties in battery performance. The results revealed that the porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes had a higher air permeability value than the Celgard PP separators, indicating that the porosity, interconnected pores and ionic conductivity were higher. The porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes had an enhanced electrolyte wettability, small contact angle and large electrolyte uptake leading to be the most promising candidate for Li-ion battery (LIB) separators.

Abstract:Bicomponent polyacrylonitrile/Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PAN/PVDF-HFP) Janus nanofibers based hybrid membrane was proposed by parallel electrospinning technology. Subsequently, modified PAN/PVDF-HFP hybrid membrane (M-PAN/PVDF-HFP) was further fabricated via mimicking the adhesive of mussel by coating dopamine alternative through polymerization of catechol and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) in weakly alkali solution. M-PAN/PVDF-HFP maintains the pore structure of the electrospun hybrid membrane and further provides excellent electrolyte infiltration, exhibiting high porosity (82.09%) and electrolyte retention (553.23%). Simultaneously, the mechanical strength of the separator was significantly improved (14.36 MPa). Electrochemical studies displayed that the M-PAN/PVDF-HFP composite membrane delivered superior ion conductivity (2.81 mS/cm) and wide electrochemical stability window (~5.25 V). The cell assembled by M-PAN/PVDF-HFP separator showed outstanding rate capability with high specific capacity of 147 mA h/g at 1 C and excellent cycle stability with discharge capacity of 120 mA h/g at 1 C after 600 cycles. Furthermore, M-PAN/PVDF-HFP separator exhibited ultra-flexibility with remarkable electrochemical performance after repeated buckling for 500 to 1000 time. This work provides new insights into polyamine modified hybrid membranes for the potential practical applications in lithium-ion batteries separator.

Abstract:A novel kind of PVDF-HFP(polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropro -pylene) -based polymer electrolyte composite membrane for lithium-ion battery was prepared. Inorganic TiO2 nanopowders in composite were dealt with solid super-acidization. Series of characterizations were carried on, such as surface acid strength H-0, XRD analysis, electrolyte absorbency, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. PE non-woven fabrics were introduced as the reinforced materials, which were soaked to prepare the composite membranes, and then assembled to get the resulted lithium-ion battery. Performance tests indicated that the lithium-ion battery had good electrochemical performance.
Robust Fluorinated Polyimide Nanofibers Membrane for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:A robust fluorinated polyimide (FPI) nanofibers membrane was prepared by an electrospinning technique and subsequent thermo-crosslinking process. Compared to pristine FPI nanofibers membrane, the thermally cross-linked FPI nanofibers membrane possesses considerable mechanical strength (i.e., 31.7MPa), small average pore size and narrow pore-size distribution and shows enhanced performance to prevent the growth and penetration of dendritic lithium, which is crucial to safe and reliable lithium-ion batteries. It is demonstrated that the FPI nanofibers membrane possesses admirable thermal stability and flame retardancy. The as-prepared pristine or thermally cross-linked FPI nanofibers membrane as a separator has greater electrolyte wettability, larger ionic conductivity, higher electrochemical oxidation limit, lower interfacial resistance, as compared to its non-fluorinated analogue nanofibers membrane and the commercial polyethylene (PE) separator. Moreover, compared with non-fluorinated PI analogue nanofibers membrane, the battery assembled with FPI nanofibers membrane with FPI binder exhibits enhanced cycle performance and rate capacity. And the electrochemical performances of the FPI-based battery are also better than the commercial battery fabricated by PE separator and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder.
Tailor-Made Electrospun Multilayer Composite Polymer Electrolytes for High-Performance Lithium Polymer Batteries

Abstract:A novel tailor-made multilayer composite polymer electrolyte, consisting of two outer layers of electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and one inner layer of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) fibrous membrane, was prepared using continuous electrospinning. These membranes, which are made up of fibers with diameters in the nanometer range, were stacked in layers to produce interconnected pores that result in a high porosity. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) were prepared by entrapping a liquid electrolyte (1 M LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate) in the membranes. The composite membranes exhibited a high electrolyte uptake of 450-510%, coupled with an improved room temperature ionic conductivity of up to 4.72 mS cm-1 and a high electrochemical stability of 4.6 V versus Li/Li+. Electrochemical investigations of a composite membrane of PAN-PVAc-PAN, with a LiFePO4 cathode synthesized in-house, showed a high initial discharge capacity of 145 mAh g-1, which corresponds to 85% utilization of the active material, and displayed stable cycle performance.
Composite Membrane Containing Titania Nanofibers for Battery Separators Used in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:In order to improve the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries, a new kind of composite membrane made using inorganic nanofibers has been developed via electrospinning and the solvent-nonsolvent exchange process. The resultant membranes present free-standing and flexible properties and have a continuous network structure of inorganic nanofibers within polymer coatings. Results show that polymer-coated inorganic nanofiber membranes have better wettability and thermal stability than those of a commercial membrane separator. The presence of inorganic nanofibers in the polymer matrix enhances the electrochemical properties of battery separators. This results in lower interfacial resistance and higher ionic conductivity, leading to the good discharge capacity and cycling performance of battery cells assembled using polymer-coated inorganic nanofiber membranes. This provides a promising solution via which to improve conventional battery separators for the high performance of lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)/polyimide (PVdF-HFP/PI) composite nanofiber membrane used for lithium ion battery separator was prepared by an electrospinning apparatus equipped with four needles. Two needles were fed with PVdF-HFP solution and the rest with PI solution and the two types of polymer solutions were arrayed alternately, in a straight line to form a composite membrane, which could be referred to as cross-electrospinning, followed by thermal calendering process to improve the mechanical property of the composite membrane via fusing the PVdF-HFP component which has lower melting temperature. PVdF-HFP/PI composite membrane showed positive results in terms of physical properties. Additionally, the cells assembled with the composite separators exhibited better electrochemical stability, lower interfacial resistance and higher ionic conductivity, compared with Celgard 2400 PP separator. Conspicuously, the improved performance of lithium ion battery separator indicated that bicomponent cross-electrospinning method could be potentially applied for designing future lithium ion battery separator.

Abstract:Polymer electrolyte composite membranes consisting of polyacrylonitrile nanofibers containing lithium salts show enhanced ion conductivity and Li+ transference number by increasing the numbers of Li+ with high mobility near polar surface groups on the PAN nanofibers. The lithium‐ion battery using the nanofiber composite membrane shows significantly improved charge and discharge cycling performances, promising future all‐solid‐state batteries. Polymer electrolyte membranes with superior lithium‐ion (Li+) conductivity and sufficient electrochemical stability are desired for all‐solid‐state lithium‐ion batteries (ASS‐LIBs). This paper reports novel polymer composite membranes consisting of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers (Nfs) containing lithium salts. It is first revealed that the lithium salt addition increases polar surface groups on the PAN nanofibers. Subsequently, the lithium salts‐containing PAN nanofiber (PAN/Li Nf) composite membrane affects the matrix poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/lithium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonylimide) (LiTFSI) electrolyte to increase the numbers of Li+ with high mobility. Consequently, the PAN/Li Nf composite membrane shows relatively good ion conductivity (σ = 9.0 × 10−5 S cm−1) and a considerably large Li+ transference number (tLi+ = 0.41) at 60 °C, compared to the PEO/LiTFSI membrane without nanofibers. The 6Li solid‐state NMR study supports that the PAN/Li Nf bearing abundant polar nitrile groups at their surface enhances Li+ diffusion in the PEO‐based electrolyte membranes. The galvanostatic constant current cycling tests reveal that the PAN/Li Nf composite membrane possesses good electrochemical and mechanical stabilities. The ASS‐LIB consisting of the PAN/Li Nf composite membrane shows significantly improved charge and discharge cycling performances, promising future all‐solid‐state batteries.

Hierarchical three-dimensional micro/nano-architecture of polyaniline nanowires wrapped-on polyimide nanofibers for high performance lithium-ion battery separators

Abstract:Polyaniline/polyimide (PANI/PI) composites with hierarchical 3D micro/nano-architecture have been prepared via electrospinning and in-situ polymerization. The PANI/PI composite prepared from 0.2 M aniline (PANI/PI-2) exhibited a small average pore size (1.730 μm) and a narrow pore size distribution (1.552–1.882 μm). Compared to the commercial polyolefin separators, the PANI/PI composite separator possesses a much better thermal stability up to 180 °C, a higher porosity (84%), a larger liquid electrolyte uptake (619%) and a higher ionic conductivity (2.33 mS cm−1). The cell with PANI/PI-2 composite separator showed a low interfacial resistance, an enhanced capacity (133 mAh g−1 at 0.2C), a better rate capability (41.4% at 10C) and cyclability (89.3% retention after 500 charge/discharge cycles at 0.2C). The PANI/PI composite with a superior thermal stability and high electrochemical performances is a promising candidate for uses in high perform LIBs.

Abstract:Electrolyte uptake and thermal stability of separators are important factors in Li-ion battery application. Here, a poly(vinyl alcohol)/melamine composite nanofiber membrane containing LATP nanocrystals (PVAM composite membrane) is prepared by the electrospinning method and is used as the separator in a high-power, high-voltage Li-ion battery. The performance of the homemade membrane is benchmarked with a commercial polyethylene (PE) separator. The characteristic properties such as morphology, porosity, electrolyte contact angle, electrolyte uptake/retention, and thermal shrinkage of the PVAM composite membranes are systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that electrospun PVAM composite membranes offer notable advantages including high porosity, low thermal shrinkage, high electrolyte uptake, and high ionic conductivity. A lithium half-cell using spinel-type Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) anode and a PVAM composite nanofiber membrane exhibits superior rate capability and cycling performance compared to the corresponding device fabricated using the commercial PE separator. The results show improved capacity retention in the PVAM-based cell (95% for 800 cycles) compared to the PE separator-based cell (∼49% for 500 cycles). A full cell constructed with a spinel-type LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) cathode, a PVAM composite membrane, and an LTO anode also exhibits higher capacity retention (∼98%) than that fabricated using the PE separator (∼93%) for 100 cycles at a 1C rate. Abstract:Current developments of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are mainly focused on improving security and cycle performance. Herein, a novel polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/triphenyl phosphate (TPP)/cellulose acetate (CA) nanofiber membrane was fabricated by one-step electrospinning and used as separator in lithium-ion batteries. Compared to traditional polyethylene membrane, the obtained composite showed higher porosity, elevated thermal stability, superior electrolyte wettability, and improved flame resistance. In addition, batteries assembled with PVDF/TPP/CA membrane exhibited excellent electrochemical properties and cycle stability. The enhanced performances were attributed to the porous structure and presence of CA and TPP. Overall, the proposed hybrid organic cellulose-based composite polymer membranes look promising as separators for advanced LIBs.
