Abstract:Globally, tuberculosis (TB) testing and treatment have declined dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic. We quantified the change in TB visits, testing, and treatment compared with a 12-month pre-pandemic baseline at the national referral hospital's TB Clinic in Lusaka, Zambia, in the first year of the pandemic. We stratified the results into early and later pandemic periods. In the first 2 months of the pandemic, the mean number of monthly TB clinic visits, prescriptions, and positive TB polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests decreased as follow: -94.1% (95% CI: -119.4 to -68.8%), -71.4% (95% CI: -80.4 to -62.4%), and -73% (95% CI: -95.5 to -51.3%), respectively. TB testing and treatment counts rebounded in the subsequent 10 months, although the number of prescriptions and TB-PCR tests performed remained significantly lower than pre-pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted TB care in Zambia, which could have long-lasting impacts on TB transmission and mortality. Future pandemic preparedness planning should incorporate strategies developed over the course of this pandemic to safeguard consistent, comprehensive TB care.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has disrupted tuberculosis (TB) care and prevention around the world. The aim of this study is to review literature on the impact of COVID-19 on TB preventive services and discuss their policy options during and after the pandemic.METHODS: We conducted a rapid review of scientific literature on the impact of COVID-19 on TB preventive services and their recovery strategies. After conducting a line-by-line open coding, their codes were applied in the descriptive theme building process, which was guided by the End TB strategy. TB preventive measures were selected and classified into five analytical categories: 1) vaccination against TB, 2) detection and treatment of latent TB infection (LTBI), 3) screening and diagnostics, 4) active case finding and contact tracing, and 5) surveillance.RESULTS: We identified 93 articles, of which 65 were research articles. During the pandemic, we observed decrease in Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) coverage, TB diagnostic services, case finding activities, and LTBI management. TB case detection was declined, which was not resumed to the pre-pandemic level after loosening the lock-down. Several recommendations were highlighted: 1) secure BCG stocks and its supply chains, 2) consider catch-up activities of routine immunization and LTBI screening, 3) maintain minimal TB health services, infection prevention and control, and surveillance, 4) leverage laboratory capacity and contact tracing mechanisms, 5) consider simultaneous testing for TB and COVID-19, and 6) Incorporate digital health technologies.CONCLUSIONS: Our findings and lessons learnt from the pandemic can aid in the development of future national TB control program.

Data from 33 centers in 16 countries on 5 continents showed that attendance at tuberculosis centers was lower during the first 4 months of the pandemic in 2020 than for the same period in 2019. Resources are needed to ensure tuberculosis care continuity during the pandemic.

Abstract:The global tuberculosis burden remains substantial, with more than 10 million people newly ill per year. Nevertheless, tuberculosis incidence has slowly declined over the past decade, and mortality has decreased by almost a third in tandem. This positive trend was abruptly reversed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which in many parts of the world has resulted in a substantial reduction in tuberculosis testing and case notifications, with an associated increase in mortality, taking global tuberculosis control back by roughly 10 years. Here, we consider points of intersection between the tuberculosis and COVID-19 pandemics, identifying wide-ranging approaches that could be taken to reverse the devastating effects of COVID-19 on tuberculosis control. We review the impact of COVID-19 at the population level on tuberculosis case detection, morbidity and mortality, and the patient-level impact, including susceptibility to disease, clinical presentation, diagnosis, management, and prognosis. We propose strategies to reverse or mitigate the deleterious effects of COVID-19 and restore tuberculosis services. Finally, we highlight research priorities and major challenges and controversies that need to be addressed to restore and advance the global response to tuberculosis.
The latent tuberculosis infection cascade of care during the COVID-19 pandemic response in a Mid-Sized US city

Abstract:Background: The COVID-19 pandemic response may unintentionally disrupt multiple public health services, including tuberculosis control programs. We aimed to assess differences in the cascade of care for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in a Midwest U.S. city during the COVID-19 pandemic response. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adult patients who presented for LTBI evaluation at the Hamilton County Public Health Tuberculosis Clinic in Ohio between 2019 and 2020. The pre-COVID-19 response period was defined as 01/2019 to 02/2020, and the COVID-19 pandemic response period (first wave) was defined as 04/2020 to 12/2020. We reviewed electronic medical records to extract sociodemographic information, medical history, follow-up and treatment data to define steps within the LTBI cascade of care. Logistic regressions were used to assess factors associated with LTBI treatment acceptance and completion, adjusted by potential confounders and COVID-19 period. Results: Data from 312 patients were included. There was a significant decrease in the number of monthly LTBI referrals (median, 18 vs. 8, p = 0.02) and LTBI evaluations (median, 17.5 vs. 7, p < 0.01) during the first wave of COVID-19. The proportion for whom immigration was listed as the indication for LTBI testing also declined (30% vs. 9%; p < 0.01) during COVID-19. More LTBI diagnoses were based on interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA; 30% vs. 49%; p < 0.01) during the COVID-19 response period. The proportion of people in the clinic for whom treatment for LTBI was recommended was similar before and during COVID-19 (76% vs. 81%, p = 0.41), as was LTBI treatment acceptance rates (56% vs. 64%, p = 0.28), and completion rates (65% vs. 63%, p = 0.85). In multivariate analysis, LTBI treatment acceptance was associated with Hispanic ethnicity, younger age, male sex, IGRA being used for diagnosis, and non-healthcare occupation, independent of COVID-19 period. LTBI treatment completion was associated with taking a rifamycin-containing regimen, independent of COVID-19 period. Conclusion: We observed a significant decline in the number of monthly LTBI referrals and evaluations during the first wave of COVID-19, revealing an unintended negative impact of the COVID-19 response in our region. However, LTBI treatment acceptance and completion rates were not affected during COVID-19.

Abstract:When the COVID-19 pandemic was announced in March 2020, there was concern that TB and HIV programme services in Malawi would be severely affected. We set up real-time monthly surveillance of TB and HIV activities in eight health facilities in Lilongwe to see if it was possible to counteract the anticipated negative impact on TB case detection and treatment and HIV testing. Aggregate data were collected monthly during the COVID-19 period (March 2020-February 2021) using an EpiCollect5 application and compared with monthly data collected during the pre-COVID-19 period (March 2019-February 2020); these reports were sent monthly to programme directors. During COVID-19, there was an overall decrease in persons presenting with presumptive pulmonary TB (45.6%), in patients registered for TB treatment (19.1%), and in individuals tested for HIV (39.0%). For presumptive TB, children and females were more affected, but for HIV testing, adults and males were more affected. During COVID-19, the TB treatment success rate (96.1% in pre-COVID-19 and 96.0% during COVID-19 period) and referral of HIV-positive persons to antiretroviral therapy (100% in pre-COVID-19 and 98.6% during COVID-19 period) remained high and largely unchanged. Declining trends in TB and HIV case detection were not redressed despite real-time monthly surveillance.
Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on TB outcomes in the United States: a Bayesian analysis

Abstract:Background Tuberculosis (TB) cases and deaths in the United States fluctuated substantially during the COVID-19 pandemic. We analyzed multiple data sources to understand the factors contributing to these changes and estimated future TB trends. Methods We identified four mechanisms potentially contributing to observed TB trends during 2020-2023: immigration, respiratory contact rates, rates of accurate diagnosis and treatment initiation, and mortality rates for persons with TB disease. We employed a Bayesian approach to synthesize evidence on how these mechanisms changed during the pandemic and how they might have combined to produce observed 2020-2023 TB data, using a transmission-dynamic model to link mechanisms to TB outcomes. We also simulated a no-pandemic counterfactual scenario that assumed mechanisms followed pre-pandemic trends. We estimated TB outcomes associated with the pandemic until 2035 to capture lagged effects. We evaluated additional scenarios to estimate the individual effect of each mechanism. Results Over the 2020-2035 study period, we estimate an additional 2,784 (95% uncertainty interval: 2,164-3,461) TB cases and 1,138 (1,076-1,201) TB deaths in the United States associated with changes occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic. The four mechanisms had offsetting effects - decreases in TB diagnosis rates and increases in TB mortality rates led to more TB deaths, while reductions in contact rates reduced TB deaths. Immigration changes initially reduced TB deaths, but increased deaths over time. Discussion While the direct impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic occurred between 2020-2023, these changes may continue to influence TB incidence and mortality in future years.
A decline in tuberculosis diagnosis, treatment initiation and success during the COVID-19 pandemic, using routine health data in Cape Town, South Africa

Abstract:Background: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) negatively impacted tuberculosis (TB) programs which were already struggling to meet End-TB targets globally. We aimed to quantify and compare diagnosis, treatment initiation, treatment success, and losses along this TB care cascade for drug-susceptible TB in Cape Town, South Africa, prior to and during COVID-19. Methods: This observational study used routine TB data within two predefined cohorts: pre-COVID-19 (1 October 2018-30 September 2019) and during-COVID-19 (1 April 2020-31 March 2021). The numbers of people diagnosed, treated for TB and successfully treated were received from the Western Cape Provincial Health Data Centre. Pre and post treatment loss to follow up and cascade success rates (proportion of individuals diagnosed with an outcome of treatment success) were calculated and compared across cohorts, disaggregated by sex, age, HIV status, TB treatment history and mode of diagnosis. Results: There were 27,481 and 19,800 individuals diagnosed with drug-susceptible TB in the pre- and during-COVID-19 cohorts respectively, a relative reduction of 28% (95% CI [27.4% - 28.5%]). Initial loss to follow up increased from 13.4% to 15.2% (p<0.001), while post treatment loss increased from 25.2% to 26.1% (p < 0.033). The overall cascade success rate dropped by 2.1%, from 64.8% to 62.7% (p< 0.001). Pre- and during-COVID-19 cascade success rates were negatively associated with living with HIV and having recurrent TB. Conclusions: An already poorly performing TB program in Cape Town was negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. There was a substantial reduction in the number of individuals diagnosed with drug-susceptible. Increases in pre-and post-treatment losses resulted in a decline in TB cascade success rates. Strengthened implementation of TB recovery plans is vital, as health services now face an even greater gap between achievements and targets and will need to become more resilient to possible future public health disruptions.

Abstract:Background: Tuberculosis has been considered a global emergency since 1993, and controlling it has become even more challenging since 2020 due to the health and social crisis resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to identify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tuberculosis case detection activities within primary health Care in the largest city in Brazil. Methods: This is a cross-sectional and analytical study on the provision of tuberculosis detection actions in primary healthcare units during the pandemic period. A descriptive analysis was performed for characterization, and Generalized Mixed Models were used for evaluating associations, with a Bonferroni post hoc test applied. Results: The study sample comprised 80 health units in the municipality. There was a moderate alteration level in the provision of consultations for individuals with signs and symptoms of tuberculosis in 2020 (13.8%) and in 2021 (15.1%). Statistical significance (p < 0.05) was found between the pandemic period and detection actions, with a lower alteration level in 2022. Conclusions: Tuberculosis detection activities underwent changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, mainly in 2020, which was associated with alterations in consultation and case notification provision.

Assessing the impact of COVID-19 management on the workload of human resources working in India's National Tuberculosis Elimination Program

Abstract:Background: In 1993, WHO declared tuberculosis (TB) as a global health emergency considering 10 million people are battling TB, of which 30% are undiagnosed annually. In 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic took an unprecedented toll on health systems in every country. Public health staff already engaged in TB control and numerous other departments were additionally tasked with managing COVID-19, stretching human resource (HR) capacity beyond its limits. As part of an assessment of HR involved in TB control in India, The World Bank Group and partners conducted an analysis of the impact of COVID-19 on TB human resources for health (HRH) workloads, with the objective of describing the extent to which TB-related activities could be fulfilled and hypothesizing on future HR requirements to meet those needs. Methods: The study team conducted a Workload Indicators and Staffing Needs (WISN) analysis according to standard WHO methodology to classify the workloads of priority cadres directly or indirectly involved in TB control activities as over-, adequately or under-worked, in 18 districts across seven states in India. Data collection was done via telephone interviews, and questions were added regarding the proportion of time dedicated to COVID-19 related tasks. We carried out quantitative analysis to describe the time allocated to COVID-19 which otherwise would have been spent on TB activities. We also conducted key informant interviews (KII) with key TB program staff about HRH planning and task-shifting from TB to COVID-19. Results: Workload data were collected from 377 respondents working in or together with India's Central TB Division (CTD). 73% of all respondents (n = 270) reported carrying out COVID-19 tasks. The average time spent on COVID-19 tasks was 4 h / day (n = 72 respondents). Multiple cadres highly instrumental in TB screening and diagnosis, in particular community outreach (ASHA) workers and CBNAAT/TrueNAAT laboratory technicians working at peripheral, block and district levels, were overworked, and spending more than 50% of their time on COVID-19 tasks, reducing time for TB case-finding. Qualitative interviews with laboratory technicians revealed that PCR machines previously used for TB testing were repurposed for COVID-19 testing. Conclusions: The devastating impact of COVID-19 on HR capacity to conduct TB case-finding in India, as in other settings, cannot be overstated. Our findings provide clear evidence that NTEP human resources did not have time or essential material resources to carry out TB tasks during the COVID pandemic without doing substantial overtime and/or compromising on TB service delivery. To minimize disruptions to routine health services such as TB amidst future emerging infectious diseases, we would do well, during periods of relative calm and stability, to strategically map out how HRH lab staff, public health resources, such as India's Health and Wellness Centers and public health cadre, and public-private sector collaboration can most optimally absorb shocks to the health system.

Abstract:It is crucial to maintain continuity of essential services for people affected by tuberculosis (TB). Efforts to deliver these essential services in many global settings have been complicated by the emergence and global spread of SARS-CoV-2 and the pandemic of COVID-19. Understanding how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the availability of TB diagnostic and treatment services is critical for identifying policies that can mitigate disruptions of these essential services. China has a dual burden of TB and COVID-19. We conducted a survey and collected data from 13 provinces in China to evaluate the early impact of COVID-19 on TB services and to document interventions that were adopted to maintain the continuity services for TB patients during the pandemic. We use these data to identify additional opportunities which will improve the ability of TB programs to maintain essential services during this crisis. While health systems and underlying epidemiology differ between countries, we believe that sharing China’s experience can inform the design of locally tailored strategies to maintain essential TB services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:Ethiopia faces a significant burden of Tuberculosis (TB), being one of the high-burden countries, and the emergence of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a dominant health concern, particularly in resource-limited settings. The repercussions of COVID-19 on TB care are evident, leading to a surge in undiagnosed TB cases, challenges in medication adherence, and an escalation of drug resistance. Consequently, a thorough assessment of the impact of COVID-19 on TB care becomes imperative to devise a tailored program for managing TB amidst future pandemics, natural disasters, and conflict crises. A mixed-methods study design was utilized, encompassing a randomly selected 10 health centers (HCs) and 3 hospitals among government owned 98 HCs and 5 hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. All TB patients who were on follow-up during the study period were included. The study period was from March 4, 2020, to December 4, 2020, with the corresponding period of March 4, 2019, to December 4, 2019, serving as the baseline for comparison. Quantitative data were gathered from TB patients' medical registries, laboratory registries, and treatment follow-up charts. Complementary qualitative data were acquired through in-depth interviews. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected from January 17, 2022 to May 13, 2022. Following the onset of the pandemic, there was a notable and statistically significant decline in both the detection of TB cases and the number of positive results across all study sites. Bacteriological TB tests reduced from 5837 to 2126 patients, and TB-positive cases decreased from 500 to 218, representing declines of 63.6% and 56.4%, respectively. The overall number of TB patients undergoing treatment also experienced a decrease from 1431 to 1051, marking a 26.6% reduction. Additionally, there was a 10% increase in the proportion of extra-pulmonary TB cases. The impact of the pandemic extended to TB treatment outcomes, with adverse effects on cure rates, death rates, loss of follow-up, and medication adherence. The apprehension of contracting COVID-19 and the implementation of isolation measures contributed to a decline in healthcare-seeking behaviors among patients, fostering negative perceptions and practices among healthcare workers. The challenges further exacerbated due to a shortage of personal protective equipment, a lack of rapid diagnostic test tools, clinical presentations resembling COVID-19, and a shift in government policies. These factors collectively posed significant obstacles to effective TB care during the pandemic. The profound impact of COVID-19 on critical TB care service indicators, including TB detection, treatment initiation, and treatment outcomes, underscores the need for immediate and collaborative measures. It is imperative to implement strategies that ensure the resumption of all TB care services concurrently with efforts to control COVID-19. A comprehensive and coordinated approach is essential to mitigate the adverse effects of the pandemic on TB management and safeguard public health.

COVID-19 Pandemic and Tuberculosis Control: A Narrative Review

Abstract:Background: The world is currently struggling with the COVID-19pandemic. Measures to control the COVID-19 pandemic have affected other health problems and diseases, including tuberculosis (TB) and its control. The present narrative review aimed at reviewing published literature on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on TB control. Materials and methods: English language databases, including PubMed, ISI, Scopus, and Google Scholar, were searched using the keywords "Tuberculosis, COVID-19, and Coronavirus" to find relevant articles. Results: Problems and limitations in financial and human resources, as well as medical and laboratory services caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, contribute to the reduction in the number of newly diagnosed patients with TB. More effort in identifying patients with TB is of great importance, and if the global number of newly diagnosed patients with TB decreases by 25% for three consecutive months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the TB mortality rate will increase by 13%. An increase in the TB mortality rate means the failure of TB control programs to reach the targets of the Global End TB Strategy. Conclusion: According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Health, the incidence of TB in Iran has not yet reached fewer than 100 cases per million population. On the other hand, being a neighbor with countries with a high risk of TB is a serious threat to Iran. Therefore, further effort to control TB during the COVID-19 pandemic is particularly important.

Abstract:Background Tuberculosis (TB) is a transmissible infectious disease caused by species of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and, until the emergence of the new Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), it was the leading cause of death among adults from a single infectious agent. The pandemic emergency substantially affected TB services, as it reorganized actions and health systems with the aim of mitigating transmission and treating those infected with COVID-19, culminating in a break in the TB management chain. Objectives To describe and compare the incidence and outcomes of TB treatment in Bahia before and after the emergence of COVID-19. Methods This is a retrospective, epidemiological, descriptive and quantitative study using secondary data from new TB cases reported in Bahia between 2017 and 2022, through the National System of Notifiable Diseases (SINAN), available at DATASUS. Data from the pre-pandemic period (2017 to 2019) were compared with the post-pandemic period (2020 to 2022). Results Bahia had 16,806 new cases of TB from 2017 to 2019, with an incidence of 114 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The highest proportion of cases was among males and in the age group of 20 to 39 years, followed by 40 to 59 years. After the onset of COVID-19, from 2020 to 2022, the number of new cases was 14,919 and the incidence of TB was 101 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The highest proportion of cases remained for males and for the age group 20 to 39 years old, followed by 40 to 59 years old in 2020 and 2021. However, in 2022 there was an inversion between age groups, with a higher proportion of TB between 40 and 59 years old. Regarding treatment outcomes, there were reductions of 33% in TB treatment dropout and 25% in primary dropout. Despite this, there was a 44% reduction in the number of patients cured of TB. Changing treatment regimens increased by 64% and multidrug resistant TB decreased by 18%. Regarding deaths of patients with TB, there was a small increase (2%) in deaths from TB and a 20% reduction in deaths from other causes. Ignored or unfilled outcomes increased 3.97 times post-pandemic. Conclusion After the emergence of COVID-19, there was an 11.2% drop in the number of new TB cases in Bahia. Despite the reduction in treatment abandonment, an increase in the number of uncured patients and a slight increase in the number of deaths from TB was observed. The significant increase in ignored or unfilled outcomes can be justified by the reallocation of resources for coping with COVID-19, generating less follow-up of active cases and those undergoing treatment for TB from 2020 to 2022. Implications Epidemiological monitoring allows tracing and comparing the profile of patients, knowing health-related outcomes, identifying changes and measuring the impact of COVID-19 on TB care and control, in order to help adapt strategies and goals for better management of patients undergoing treatment and contacts.

Abstract:Worldwide, COVID-19 has decimated healthcare systems and highlighted the pressing need to ensure resilience for future pandemics. Given the almost 30% likelihood of another respiratory disease similar to COVID-19 manifesting in the next 10 years, it is imperative to prioritize pandemic preparedness in the immediate future. To this end, tuberculosis (TB) and its management share many similarities to respiratory disease protection, offering an opportunity to dually strengthen TB programs and protect against future pandemics. Looking at data from the World Health Organization (WHO), Global Fund, Our World in Data, and domestic health ministries, it was hypothesized that countries that had better TB program strength going into the pandemic fared better with COVID-19 than those with poorer TB treatment. It was found that countries that recovered their TB program strength (as measured by TB treatment coverage percentages) to or above pre-pandemic levels fared better in terms of COVID-19 pandemic incidence and death. Case studies helped identify common factors across resilient TB platforms in dually successful COVID-19 and TB countries, including community trust, co-epidemic responses that were able to maintain continuity of care, sustained innovation, comprehensive communication across public and private sectors, and maintenance of donor support for TB programs through the pandemic.

Abstract:When COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, there was concern that TB and HIV services in Zimbabwe would be severely affected. We set up real-time monthly surveillance of TB and HIV activities in 10 health facilities in Harare to capture trends in TB case detection, TB treatment outcomes and HIV testing and use these data to facilitate corrective action. Aggregate data were collected monthly during the COVID-19 period (March 2020-February 2021) using EpiCollect5 and compared with monthly data extracted for the pre-COVID-19 period (March 2019-February 2020). Monthly reports were sent to program directors. During the COVID-19 period, there was a decrease in persons with presumptive pulmonary TB (40.6%), in patients registered for TB treatment (33.7%) and in individuals tested for HIV (62.8%). The HIV testing decline improved in the second 6 months of the COVID-19 period. However, TB case finding deteriorated further, associated with expiry of diagnostic reagents. During the COVID-19 period, TB treatment success decreased from 80.9 to 69.3%, and referral of HIV-positive persons to antiretroviral therapy decreased from 95.7 to 91.7%. Declining trends in TB and HIV case detection and TB treatment outcomes were not fully redressed despite real-time monthly surveillance. More support is needed to transform this useful information into action.
The global impact of COVID-19 on tuberculosis: A thematic scoping review, 2020-2023

Abstract:Background: This thematic scoping review of publications sought to understand the global impact of COVID-19 on tuberculosis (TB), interpret the scope of resonating themes, and offer policy recommendations to stimulate TB recovery and future pandemic preparedness. Data sources: Publications were captured from three search engines, PubMed, EBSCO, and Google Scholar, and applicable websites written in English from January 1, 2020, to April 30, 2023. Study selection: Our scoping review was limited to publications detailing the impact of COVID-19 on TB. Original research, reviews, letters, and editorials describing the deleterious and harmful--yet sometimes positive--impact of COVID-19 (sole exposure) on TB (sole outcome) were included. The objective was to methodically categorize the impacts into themes through a comprehensive review of selected studies to provide significant health policy guidance. Data extraction: Two authors independently screened citations and full texts, while the third arbitrated when consensus was not met. All three performed data extraction. Data synthesis/results: Of 1,755 screened publications, 176 (10%) covering 39 countries over 41 months met the inclusion criteria. By independently using a data extraction instrument, the three authors identified ten principal themes from each publication. These themes were later finalized through a consensus decision. The themes encompassed TB's care cascade, patient-centered care, psychosocial issues, and health services: 1) case-finding and notification (n = 45; 26%); 2) diagnosis and laboratory systems (n = 19; 10.7%) 3) prevention, treatment, and care (n = 22; 12.2%); 4) telemedicine/telehealth (n = 12; 6.8%); 5) social determinants of health (n = 14; 8%); 6) airborne infection prevention and control (n = 8; 4.6%); 7) health system strengthening (n = 22; 13%); 8) mental health (n = 13; 7.4%); 9) stigma (n = 11; 6.3%); and 10) health education (n = 10; 5.7%). Limitations: Heterogeneity of publications within themes. Conclusions: We identified ten globally generalizable themes of COVID-19's impact on TB. The impact and lessons learned from the themed analysis propelled us to draft public health policy recommendations to direct evidence-informed guidance that strengthens comprehensive global responses, recovery for TB, and future airborne pandemic preparedness.
