Abstract:There is increasing demand in the electronics recycling industry for an effective method to separate polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and Cu from thin electric cable waste. Herein, a novel separation technique involving PVC embrittlement via plasticizer extraction and crushing by ball milling is proposed. The method was developed by varying the size, quantity, and hardness of the cables, as well as the size and quantity of the milling balls, to determine a combination that resulted in complete separation of PVC and high-purity Cu (>99.9%) from thin electric cables. The experimental crushing behavior was demonstrated via a sphere-to-cylinder discrete element model combined with a statistical approach. The mechanism of PVC crushing generated cracks from the edge to the center of the cable via ball impacts that were strong enough to overcome the elastic repulsion force of the PVC. The resulting method was found to be effective at separating PVC and high-purity Cu (>99.9%) from de-plasticized thin electric cables with diameters of 1.5-2.7 mm.

Abstract:This review investigates the latest trends in separation technologies regarding hard-to-recycle thin cables, specifically in the form of end-of-life wire harnesses (WHs). The cables in WHs mainly contain copper (Cu) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), which is commonly used to insulate and sheath cables. This review reveals that most separation technologies prioritize the recovery of Cu and overlook that of PVC. The recovery of high-purity PVC is very important because of its incompatibility with other plastics or Cu during recycling treatments. Through this investigation, we confirm that physical treatments, such as stripping and chopping, are insufficient to recover high-purity PVC from thin cables. Instead, a combination of chemical (e.g., swelling of PVC insulation or sheathing of cables under a suitable solvent) and physical (e.g., ball or rod milling and mechanical agitation of swollen cables) treatments can be used to achieve the recovery of high-purity PVC and Cu both for recycling. We believe that recovering metals and plastics from end-of-life cables is vital for sustainable waste management, offering several environmental and economic benefits.
A low-temperature co-treatment of diethylhexyl phthalate-rich polyvinyl chloride and waste copper catalyst by subcritical water (hydrothermal treatment): Dechlorination, recovery of diethylhexyl phthalate and copper

Abstract:As one of the most widespread plastics in the world, the recycling of diethylhexyl phthalate-rich polyvinyl chloride (DEHP-rich PVC) faces great challenges because of the high levels of Cl and plasticizers. On the other hand, waste copper catalyst (WCC) discharged from various industrial processes is not effectively recycled. In this study, a significant synergistic effect between the DEHP-rich PVC and WCC was found in a subcritical water (SubCW) medium, and a co-treatment of the DEHP-rich PVC and WCC was developed by the SubCW process. The introduction of WCC significantly improved the dechlorination efficiency of the DEHP-rich PVC to 96.03 % at a low temperature of 250 °C. Under the optimal conditions, the leaching of copper from WCC reached a maximum of 81.08 %. Oil products included DEHP (55.7 %, GC peak area%), 3-methyl-3-heptene (37.3 %, GC peak area%), and 2-ethyl-1-hexanol (7.0 %, GC peak area%). The dechlorination pathways of the DEHP-rich PVC included hydroxyl substitution and direct dechlorination. HCl released from the DEHP-rich PVC led to a decrease in the pH of the system and significant copper leaching from the WCC. DEHP was decomposed by hydrolysis, dehydration, and rearrangement reaction by the SubCW co-treatment process. The enhancement mechanism of the WCC for the dechlorination of the DEHP-rich PVC was based on that the conversion of copper species in the SubCW promoted the formation of hydroxyl radicals and the hydroxyl substitution for chlorine in PVC molecular chain. The proposed SubCW low-temperature co-treatment could be a prospective strategy for the low-energy and synchronous recovery of the two different wastes of the DEHP-rich PVC and WCC.

Abstract:Diethyl phthalate (DEP) is a typical environmentally organic pollutant, widely used in the production process of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to improve the flexibility of plastic materials. Its interaction with living organisms can inflict considerable harm to reproductive system functions. This research aims to utilize tetrahydrofuran (THF) to selectively break the chemical bonds in PVC molecules to provide more adsorption sites. Then incorporates the plasticizing assembly process of PVC to instantly remove and recover DEP from wastewater, achieving waste utilization, and sustainable environmental development. The research found that PTFR with a concentration of around 75 mg/L shows the best DEP removal efficiency. Sequencing batch processing removes more DEP compared to direct processing under the same material usage conditions. Furthermore, the recovery rate of DEP can reach over 90%. The technology demonstrates notable enhancements in removal efficiency and adsorption duration when compared to conventional adsorption techniques. This research has established an instant and efficient method for DEP removal, providing a new idea and technology for plasticizer treatment in practical wastewater.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is globally the third most produced plastic, but recycling PVC waste through mechanical means is difficult. Due to the high presence of chlorine in PVC, it is unsuitable for both pyrolysis and combustion. Consequently, there is a need to explore innovative methods for harnessing its energy potential. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a topic of growing interest in the literature for chemical recycling of waste plastic or conversion into liquid energy carriers. In this work an innovative sequential hydrothermal processing strategy was tested for oil production from PVC. PVC at high loadings (20 wt.%) was first processed under subcritical conditions to produce a chlorine-free solid, which was then liquefied in supercritical conditions. Different temperatures were tested for the dechlorination stage, and at 300 °C 99% of chlorine was removed, while 94% of carbon remained in the solid residue. The mechanism behind the solid's formation was investigated by assessing activation energies, both with the addition of KOH as a neutralizing agent (120 kJ/mol) and without it (186 kJ/mol). Different temperatures were screened for an HTL supercritical stage (420–480 °C), but the maximum conversion of the dechlorinated solid was 47%, and the maximum mass yield of oil was 10%. Overall, the subcritical phase demonstrated its potential as a technology for producing chlorine-free solid material with a high energy density. The subsequent supercritical step partially valorized the dechlorinated solid by producing an aromatic-rich oil phase.

Abstract:Mixed plastic wastes are posing substantial challenges to the environment due to their mass production and difficulty in separation, especially mixed polyvinyl chloride/polyethylene terephthalate (PVC/PET) plastic wastes. In this work, a novel tandem thermochemical process including hydrothermal depolymerization of mixed PVC/PET plastic wastes, and subsequent catalytic aqueous phase reforming (APR) of hydrolysate solution was developed. The activated carbon derived from PVC (PVC-AC) supported Ru catalysts were prepared and successfully used in the catalytic APR of hydrolysate solution for high-purity H2 production. Besides, the presence of NaOH realized in-situ capture of CO2 in APR process, which promoted the water-gas shift reaction and inhibited methanation reactions. As a result, a high H2 yield of 12.23 mol/kgPlastic with H2 concentration of ca. 98% was obtained via tandem hydrothermal conversion of mixed PVC/PET plastic wastes. The by-products from the entire tandem process including the terephthalic acid (TPA) and sodium chloride (NaCl) were separated and purified for further industrial application. This work provided a sustainable route for conversion of mixed plastic wastes into value-added fuel.

Abstract:The reuse of waste polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has drawn much attention as it can reduce plastic waste and associated pollution, and provide valuable raw materials and products. In this study, sulfonated PVC-derived hydrochar (HS-PVC) was synthesized by two-stage hydrothermal treatment (HT) and sulfonation, and shown to be a versatile adsorbent. The removal of Cu(II) cations and Cr(VI) anions using HS-PVC reached 81.2 ± 1.6% and 60.3 ± 3.8%, respectively. The first stage of HT was crucial for the dichlorination of PVC and the formation of an aromatic structure. This stage guaranteed the introduction of -SO3H onto PVC-derived hydrochar through subsequent sulfonation. HT intensities (i.e., temperature and time) and sulfonation intensity strongly determined the adsorption capacity of HS-PVC. Competitive adsorption between Cu(II) and Cr(VI) onto HS-PVC was demonstrated by binary and preloading adsorption. The proposed Cu(II) cations adsorption mechanism was electrostatic adsorption, while Cr(VI) were possibly complexed by the phenolic -OH and reduced to Cr(III) cations by CC groups in HS-PVC. In addition, HS-PVC derived from PVC waste pipes performed better than PVC powder for Cu(II) and Cr(VI) removal (>90%). This study provides an efficient method for recycling waste PVC and production of efficient adsorbents.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) wastes have attracted significant concern in terms of the environment, economy, and health. Although there is considerable emphasis on the recycling of PVC waste, research on its upgrading conversion still faces great challenges. Here, a ZnO-assisted dehalogenation strategy under facile solvothermal conditions is demonstrated for upgrading PVC to high-value carbon materials. Chlorine content is reduced from similar to 56.7 wt % (pristine PVC) to similar to 1.7 wt %, removing similar to 96.9% Cl. Besides, the total carbon residue rate of such a method reaches up to similar to 75 at. %. For comparison, it is only similar to 26 atom % for the direct pyrolysis of PVC, along with the corrosive HCl and highly toxic dioxins. The as-prepared carbon materials with porous structure, high-content sp(2)-C, and lamellar layers allow a faster kinetic rate of the Faraday reaction and promotes the ions diffusion between layers. As the anode of the lithium-ion battery, the optimal sample delivers 500.5 mAh g(-1) at 125 mA g(-1) and maintains a stable capacity of 150.6 mAh g(-1) even at 6250 mA g(-1). This work provides a promising strategy for upcycling PVC into high-value products.
Separation and purification of metal and fiberglass extracted from waste printed circuit boards using milling and dissolution techniques

Abstract:Pulverization operations are extensively used in the recycling of waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) for liberation of metal and fiberglass in powder shape. The types of liberated metals can vary greatly, for instance it can be copper, tin, lead, aluminum, nickel, gold, palladium, and so forth. However, the obtained metal and nonmetal particles remain contaminated by hazardous material—Brominated Epoxy Resin (BER) what can result in series of environmental and health issues during the further processing. The developed approach was focused on the extraction of uncontaminated copper and fiberglass (which are considered the basic elements that can make up >50% of total WPCB weight) in the form of micro‐particles. To achieve this goal, WPCB samples were cut from areas with high copper concentration while the other components like solder and through‐hole pads (containing other metals) were avoided. At the next step, high energy ball milling was used to grind WPCBs and obtain BER/metal and BER/fiberglass particles. After that, Dimethylformamide (DMF) and ultrasonication were used for dissolution of BER in the powder at a low temperature 50°C, whereas the total treatment time was 4 h and solid to liquid ratio was 1:6 (w/v). Finally, centrifugation was employed to separate the liquid phase (BER/DMF solution) from solid phase (metal and fiberglass particles). The experiments were conducted on five WPCB samples of the same weight that were cut from the five different WPCB models. After the experiments used DMF was regenerated by a rotary evaporator. Ultraviolet‐Visible Spectroscopy, metallographic microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and SEM‐EDS were used to examine the structure of recovered BER, fiberglass, regenerated DMF, and base metal compositions of each sample. The results showed that the metal composition of samples directly depended on WPCB model types. Also, the treatment significantly improved the purity of the extracted fiberglass, therefore it can be used as a high‐purity micro‐filler material for composite applications; the same purification was observed for recovered copper. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 37: 1901–1907, 2018

Abstract:Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is ubiquitous in everyday life; however, it is not recycled because it degrades uncontrollably into toxic products above 250°C. Therefore, it is of interest to controllably dechlorinate PVC at mild temperatures to generate narrowly distributed carbon materials. We present a catalytic route to dechlorinate PVC (~90% reduction of Cl content) at mild temperature (200°C) to produce gas H 2 (with negligible coproduction of corrosive gas HCl) and carbon materials using Ga as a liquid metal (LM) catalyst. A LM was used to promote intimate contact between PVC and the catalytic sites. During dechlorination of PVC, Cl is sequestrated in the carbonaceous solid product. Later, chlorine is easily removed with an acetone wash at room temperature. The Ga LM catalyst is reusable, outperforms a traditional supported metal catalyst, and successfully converts (untreated) discarded PVC pipe.

Abstract:For sustainability, it is necessary to consider potential life-cycle environmental impacts during the early stage development of key technologies. In this study, ways to address the intractable problem of recycling polyvinyl chloride (PVC) waste were considered by a combined approach including experiments, simulations, and an ex ante life-cycle assessment (LCA). The potential life-cycle environmental impacts of an industrial-scale Cl recovery process, including the dechlorination of PVC by ball-milling and product recovery by electrodialysis, were estimated on the basis of up-scale experiments and a validated simulation method. The LCA model reveals the changes in the impacts for various operation conditions (e.g., charged balls) to determine the optimal design for mitigating the impacts. The proposed technical countermeasures for the quantitatively determined main contributors have the potential to substantially reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with PVC. Abstract:It is necessary to remove chlorine efficiently from municipal waste plastics (MWP) that contain polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other plastics containing chlorine. In this article we consider thermal degradation liquefaction technology. In Japan, the chlorine content of reclamation oil products must be kept below 100 ppm owing to the quality standard for pyrolysis oil. Liquefaction dechlorination technology for MWP is still an important issue to study. The twin-screw extruder that has been developed as dechlorination technology for blast furnaces and coke ovens has a shorter residence time for dechlorination than other dechlorination technologies. In this article, we used a single-screw extruder for the dechlorination process because it also has a short residence time. Experiments on the dechlorination process were carried out by using a single-screw extruder to assess its dechlorination performance. Practical use of the single-screw was demonstrated by the operation of a commercial oil reclamation plant operated by Sapporo Plastic Recycle Co., Ltd. (SPR). Moreover, an investigation of cascade recycling was carried out in 2008 in which material recycle wastes were mixed with MWP and processed by chemical recycling (liquefaction). It was demonstrated that cascade recycling is an efficient recycling combination and contributes to local feedstock recycling. However, it was shown that MR wastes affect the quality of the reclamation oil when they make up more than 40% of the feed mix. If the quantity of MR wastes is kept below 40%, the reclamation oil is able to meet the quality standard. The SPR plant can be operated safely and in a stable manner.

Abstract:The upcycling of waste polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a grand challenge because of the unmanageable Cl species. Here, we develop a Cl-transfer strategy to upcycle waste PVC into value-added organic chlorides and PE-like polymer with various Cl acceptors (tetrahydrofuran, dibutyl ether and butanol) over Ru/Al2O3 catalyst. The high utilization efficiency of Cl (> 80 %) can be obtained over Ru/Al2O3 at 180 ?C, 2Mpa H-2 with tetrahy-drofuran as an acceptor within tens of hours. The excellent performance is attributed to key features including Al2O3 for the C-O bond activation and metal Ru for C-Cl bond activation and H2 dissociation. The remaining PE-like polymer after removing Cl could be regarded as PE-like feedstock and further converted into methane through the same Ru/Al2O3 catalyst. The Cl-transfer system also enables the upcycling of several common PVC-contained wastes and works well in the scale-up test. This work offers a catalytic path to integrate waste PVC plastic into the supply chain of organic chlorides under the context of circular economy.

Abstract:Cross-linked acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR)/poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) blends are extensively served as commercial insulation foams. However, methods to reclaim the wasted NBR/PVC composites are usually inappropriate, causing severe pollution. Herein, we reported that the waste NBR/PVC composites powders (WNPP) with high thermal stability and degree of reclaiming were prepared by solid-state shear milling technology (S3M). Furthermore, the reclaimed products via thermoplastic re-processing had excellent mechanical properties, and the optimal stress and strain were increased by 208.2 % and 269.4 %, respectively, compared with the products made from virgin scraps. Through the investigation of each sample's molecular chains and thermal properties, it was found that when the cross-linked polar rubber-plastic composites are reclaimed, the molecular chains of the rubber phase would be close to each other. The interaction among polar groups would be enhanced, which is the main contributing factor limiting the movability of the polymer chains. And the interaction between the polar rubber and plastic phases would also increase, which is beneficial for the compatibility of the two phases. Moreover, there is a phase separation between the de-crosslinked continuous phase and the residual cross-linked network region for the re-processing products.

Abstract:Dehalogenation is a key technology in the feedstock recycling of mixed halogenated waste plastics. In this study, two different methods were used to clarify the effectiveness of our proposed catalytic dehalogenation process using various carbon composites of iron oxides and calcium carbonate as the catalyst/sorbent. The first approach (a two-step process) was to develop a process for the thermal degradation of mixed halogenated waste plastics, and also develop dehalogenation catalysts for the catalytic dehydrochlorination of organic chlorine compounds from mixed plastic-derived oil containing polyvinyl chloride (PVC) using a fixed-bed flow-type reactor. The second approach (a single-step process) was the simultaneous degradation and dehalogenation of chlorinated (PVC) and brominated (plastic containing brominated flame retardant, HIPS–Br) mixed plastics into halogen-free liquid products. We report on a catalytic dehalogenation process for the chlorinated and brominated organic compounds formed by the pyrolysis of PVC and brominated flame retardant (HIPS–Br) mixed waste plastics [(polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS)], and also other plastics. During dehydrohalogenation, the iron- and calcium-based catalysts were transformed into their corresponding halides, which are also very active in the dehydrohalogenation of organic halogenated compounds. The halogen-free plastic-derived oil (PDO) can be used as a fuel oil or feedstock in refineries.

Steam gasification in the presence of molten carbonates is a promising means for recycling WEEE as the plastics they contain can be converted into main product of syngas that can be recycled, and valuable metals are left for further processing. In the process, the organic halogen compounds can be expected recovered as safe and stable inorganic salts. In the study, typical chlorine containing WEEE plastic of PVC was studied by the steam gasification in the presence of molten carbonates at the temperature of 625°C. The dechlorination stage was investigated by thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis besides the steam gasification. The thermal decomposition of PVC proceeded in two steps, the first step is dechlorination in the low temperature region around 200-400°C, and the second step is decomposition of the remainder from the first step. The dechlorination in the steam gasification was mainly affected by the steam flow rate, temperature and carbonates. Results indicate that most of the chlorine can be removed in the process directly that the steam gasification is expected to be used as a feasible method for converting WEEE plastics into clean gaseous products together with valuable metals recovery.

Abstract:Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics are widely applicable in our daily life; however, their overuse and extremely high resistance to recycling/disposal have caused serious challenges to our environment. In this study, we proposed an effective and green method to convert PVC plastics to carbonaceous materials via KOH-assisted room-temperature dehalogenation, along with the formation of clean byproducts of KCl and H2O. Thereof, high-quality porous carbon materials are obtainable through performing simple annealing on the above-mentioned carbonaceous materials. The as-resulted carbon materials derived from PVC plastics were fabricated into electrodes for supercapacitor application. Remarkably, the porous carbon material derived from PVC plastic wrap (PW-C) exhibited excellent performance for aqueous symmetric supercapacitor. The specific capacitance reached up to 399 and 363 F g–1 (at 1.0 A g–1) in 6.0 mol L–1 KOH and 1.0 mol L–1 H2SO4 electrolytes, respectively. Meanwhile, PW-C showed very good rate capability and cycling stability in both electrolytes. Therefore, our developed method is capable of treating PVC plastic wastes safely and efficiently and converting them into valued-added porous carbon electrode materials, which may find very soon practical implantations.

Abstract:The presence of chlorine in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) presents a major challenge for realizing the high-value utilization of real waste plastics. The objective of this research was to develop a chlorine-resistant process for the preparation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from mixed plastics containing PVC. This study investigates the influence of PVC content and various dechlorinating agents (CaO, Na2CO3, red mud (RM), ZSM-5, Fe-Al2O3, Fe(OH)3) on CNTs formation. The results showed that PVC content exceeding 5 % significantly inhibits CNTs formation. Employing dechlorinating agents in the pyrolysis process results in a substantial yield of CNTs from mixed plastics containing 10 % PVC. Among the dechlorinating agents, RM proves to be the most effective, leading to the highest carbon yield (at 30 wt%) and superior CNTs quality. Other dechlorinating agents, except for ZSM-5, yield comparable results, although there were some obvious variations of volatiles. Further investigation of the role of dechlorinating agents from the perspective of volatiles evolution was conducted via Py-GC/MS, and found that the dechlorination agent efficiently absorbs the HCl from mixed plastics pyrolysis, while also exhibiting catalytic and regulatory influence on volatile components. These findings offer valuable insights for the development of a chlorine-resistant process in the preparation of CNTs from mixed plastics that contain PVC.

Mechanochemical Treatment of Waste Poly (Vinyl Chloride) for Alcohol Halogenation by Ball Milling and Triboelectric Material

Abstract:Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), one of the most extensively produced polymers, has raised significant environment and public health concerns due to its persistence in ecosystem, long-term accumulation and associated toxicity. The well-established mechanical recycling approach for treating waste PVC often result in polymer degradation and release of hazardous by-products, such as corrosive HCl. We envisage that mechanical recycling in tandem with a halogenation reaction provide a new solution to waste PVC management. Herein, we demonstrated that PVC plastic could serve as chlorination reagents, in combination with triboelectric catalyst, to achieve efficient halogenation of alcohols under ball milling condition. The triboelectric catalyst, TiO2, mediates the single electron transfer process that promotes the dehydrochlorination of PVC, thereby enabling the in-situ chlorination of alcohols. This strategy was applicable to a variety of aliphatic and benzylic alcohols, yielding the corresponding organic chlorides in moderate to excellent yields. In particular, the yield of benzyl chloride reached 95% after 4 h of ball milling. Structural analysis confirmed that polymer formed by dehydrochlorination of PVC contained olefin, carbonyl and aromatic structures. Additionally, Cl could be completely removed, and the molecular weight decreased from 65.0 kDa to 4.6 kDa after recycling and reusing PVC five times. This mechanochemical approach was also successfully applied in real plastics applications and scale-up experiments. Overall, this method provides inspiration for using PVC as a chlorine source to initiate chemical reactions through mechanochemical approaches.

Abstract:Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is widely used in daily life, but its waste has become a serious environmental problem. A solid base assisted low-temperature solvothermal dehalogenation was developed in this work to sustainably and efficiently transform PVC into high-value dimethylamine hydrochloride (DMACl) chemical and N,O co-doped carbon monolith with hierarchically porous structure. The synergistic promotion of solid-base catalyst and solvent decomposition with the removal of HCl can shift forward the chemical equilibrium to promote the dechlorination of PVC and increase the carbon yield. Meanwhile, the solid-base catalyst can also act as a pore-forming additive to fabricate the carbon monolith with hierarchical pores. Induced by the high specific surface area, hierarchical pores and N,O co-doped structure, the generated carbon monolith exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance towards H2 evolution. These discoveries shed light on the design of synergistically coupled solvent and solid catalyst to promote the heterogeneous conversion of waste chlorinated plastics into high-value chemicals for a sustainable future.
