Abstract:In view of the worldwide concern about the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental problems associated with these sources, biomass is getting increased attention as a source of renewable energy and chemicals. Biomass gasification has a significant higher biomass to power efficiency than biomass combustion. However, gasification of biomass also produces significant amounts of heavy hydrocarbons (referred to as "tars") along with particulates. These tars will condense in downstream equipment, or deposit on active sites of catalysts, leading to loss of activity and the need for frequent regeneration. Hence it is necessary to remove the tars. Here we discuss the use of pulsed corona and plasma-catalysis as alternative methods for catalytic and thermal treatment. In both catalytic as well as thermal treatment processes, the fundamental mechanism involves creation and stabilizing of reactive species, which thereafter initiate the necessary reactions under kinetic and thermodynamic limitations. The same can be expected to occur in a non-thermal plasma, where similar species can be created by energetic electron-molecule collisions.

Abstract:In this study, a packed-bed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor was developed to investigate the removal of biomass tar in a fuel gas atmosphere. Toluene was used as the tar surrogate, and the catalyst used was a Nickel-based catalyst (Ni/gamma-Al2O3) because of its high activity and low cost. In addition, another two kinds of packing materials (glass pellets and gamma-Al2O3 pellets) were employed to make a comparison with the Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. The research has focused on the removal efficiency of toluene and the effects of carrier gas, reaction temperature, Ni loading, and concentration of toluene. The results indicated that two supplementary packing materials could not realize an effective removal of toluene. On the contrary, Ni/gamma-Al2O3 combined with plasma showed a significant synergetic effect and hence a great toluene removal potential. On one hand, the removal efficiency initially decreased within the temperature range of 200-300 degrees C and then significantly increased within the temperature of 300-400 degrees C during plasma-catalytic process. At the optimal temperature of 400 degrees C, the toluene removal efficiency could reach the maximum values of 80.2%, 91.7%, and 100.0% when the Ni loading was 3, 5, and 10 wt %, respectively. On the other hand, an increase in the inlet toluene concentration slightly reduced removal-efficiency but increased the energy efficiency, reaching the highest value of 16.8 g/kWh. The introduction of plasma enhanced the methanation reaction of the fuel gas occurring in the catalytic process, which was favorable at high temperatures. Based on these findings, the mechanisms and pathways of toluene destruction in the plasma-catalytic process were proposed and elucidated.
Mechanisms of Toluene Removal in Relation to the Main Components of Biosyngas in a Catalytic Nonthermal Plasma Process

Abstract:In this study, a packed-bed dielectric barrier discharge reactor was built for the removal of biomass gasification tar. Two kinds of packing materials, glass pellets and a Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst, were employed for the plasma-alone process and the plasma catalytic process, respectively. Toluene was used as the tar surrogate, and five typical gas combinations, N-2, N-2 + CO2, N-2 + CO2 + CO, N-2 + CO + H-2, and simulated gasification gas (SGG), were selected as carrier gases. The effects of the main components of the gasification gas on toluene removal under plasma and/or catalysis treatment were studied. The results indicated that the highest removal efficiency in the plasma-alone process was achieved in the N-2 atmosphere, and the addition of H-2, CO, or CO2 to N-2 led to a decrease in the removal performance. When Ni/gamma-Al2O3 was introduced into the plasma process, the best removal efficiency was obtained in the N-2 + CO2 atmosphere. However, the positive effect of CO2 on toluene removal switched to a negative effect when CO2 coexists with CO and H-2 in the gas mixture. In addition, both the terminating effect at low temperature and the occurrence of methanation induced by CO at high temperature could significantly inhibit the removal of toluene in the plasma catalytic process. Typically, in the SGG atmosphere, the highest toluene removal efficiencies under plasma-alone, catalysis-alone, and plasma catalysis treatments were 33.5, 38.6, and 92.5%, respectively. Furthermore, no CN-containing or O-containing compounds were identified as the major by-products in the plasma catalytic process, which is significantly different from what was observed in the plasma-alone process. Moreover, a detailed mechanism of toluene removal under plasma and plasma catalysis treatment was proposed after the analysis of gas and liquid products.

Abstract:This paper reports toluene decomposition with a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and a catalyst bed reactor in air at atmospheric pressure. Three Ag-based composite oxide catalysts are used to recycle O radicals for toluene decomposition and ozone decomposition. Toluene is not only oxidized inside the DBD non-thermal plasma (NTP) reactor by active species but also within the catalyst bed reactor via ozone to O radical conversion. Moreover, the DBD generated intermediate byproducts, such as CO, formic acid and formaldehyde, are simultaneously oxidized by the post catalysis. At a DBD specific energy density of 60 J/L, toluene decomposition efficiencies by the DBD and the DBD with the catalyst bed reactor are about 62% and 100%, respectively. In terms of toluene and/or ozone decomposition efficiencies, their chemical reactivity is in the order of NTP+Ag-Mn-O approximate to NTP+Ag-Co-O>NTP+Ag-Ce-O> NTP. Abstract:Biomass gasification is a common technology of converting biomass into energy.The tar produced in the process ofbiomass gasification not only leads to equipment corrosion,pipeline blockage and secondary pollution,but also reduces the efficiency of biomass gasification.The classification,potential hazard and treatment methods of biomass tar are reviewed in this paper,with a focus on the recent research progress of catalytic cracking and plasma treatment methods.The advantages and disadvantages of different methods were compared.Physical method has the advantages of simple devices and easy operation,but the energy is not fully utilized and the secondary pollution exists.Thermal cracking can convert tar into gas and increase the energy of the produced gas,however,the process needs high temperature and cost.Having the lower temperature than thermal cracking,the catalytic cracking is the most active field in tar treatment,but the catalysts have the disadvantages of poor stability,easy deactivation,high cost etc.Plasma methods include cold plasma method and thermal plasma method,which are newly developed treatment methods of biomass tar in recent years.Possessing the characteristics of high temperature,high enthalpy and high electron density,the thermal plasma method provides new opportunity for the development of biomass tar processing technology.

Abstract:Non-thermal plasma (NTP) is effective for degradation of aromatic molecules, achieving complete mineralization, however, is difficult. In contrast, thermal catalysis may be very effective toward achieving complete mineralization at high temperatures. Its drawbacks at a low processing temperature are undesirable intermediate byproducts production. By integrating dielectric barrier discharge with home-made Ag-MnOx catalyst, we have succeeded in achieving both VOCs complete decomposition and without toxic byproducts production. As an example, this paper reports toluene decomposition in air. The effects of the reaction temperature and the plasma specific energy density on the decomposition efficiency and byproducts formation are experimentally investigated. Very effective synergetic effect between the NTP and catalyst has been observed for VOCs decomposition.

Abstract:To supply combustion engines or gasturbines with fuel gas obtained from biomass gasification, it is necessary to clean the fuel gas. Also the production of chemicals by processes such as Fisher-Tropsch requires a high gas quality. Especially heavy aromatic hydrocarbons (“tars”) must be removed. In this work, we give an overview of our investigations on tar removal by pulsed corona discharges as an alternative approach to catalytic or thermal tar cracking. Experimental results (at a gas temperature of 200°C) are reported for the removal of various model tar components in synthetic fuel gas. In order to identify the major reaction pathways, experiments were also done on tars in individual fuel gas components. The results show that tar removal by pulsed corona processing is possible. The process for tar removal is mainly via oxidation. Also termination reactions by CO play an important role.
Enhanced Reforming of Mixed Biomass Tar Model Compounds Using a Hybrid Gliding Arc Plasma Catalytic Process

Abstract:Plasma-catalytic steam reforming of mixed tar model compounds (toluene and naphthalene) from biomass gasification has been carried out in a gliding arc discharge (GAD) plasma reactor. The influence of three catalysts (15Ni, 7.5Ni7.5Co and 15Co) on the performance of the plasma reforming of toluene and naphthalene has been evaluated including the conversion, the energy efficiency, the yield/selectivity of gaseous products and the formation of by-products. A plasma-catalysis synergy was generated when introducing the catalysts to the plasma tar reforming process. The highest toluene conversion of 95.7% and naphthalene conversion of 83.4% were achieved when the 7.5Ni7.5Co catalyst was integrated with the GAD plasma at a total tar concentration of 16.0 g/Nm(3) and a discharge power of 75 W. The corresponding energy efficiency for the conversion of toluene and naphthalene was 38.0 g/kWh and 2.3 g/kWh, respectively, giving the highest total tar conversion of 95.1% and overall energy efficiency of 40.3 g/kWh. The coupling of GAD with the 7.5Ni7.5Co catalyst also showed the highest yield of H-2 (42.3%) and CO (37.3%) and the highest CO selectivity of 40.1%. In addition, the combination of the GAD plasma with 7.5Ni7.5Co reduced the carbon deposition on the catalyst surfaces and the formation of by-products in the plasma-catalytic tar reforming process. The enhanced reducibility and NiCo alloy formation of the 7.5Ni7.5Co catalyst contribute to the enhanced conversion of mixed tar compounds and the formation of the plasma-catalysis synergy in the hybrid plasma-catalytic tar reforming process.

Abstract:In this study, steam reforming of toluene was carried out in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor combined with Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts. The effect of reaction temperature, calcination temperature of catalysts, and relative permittivity of packing materials, on the reaction performance and synergistic effect of plasma catalysis was investigated. The results showed that toluene conversion decreased initially and then increased with increasing temperature, due to a decreasing average reduced electric field and increasing catalytic activity at higher temperatures. At 450 degrees C, the process achieved a high toluene conversion of 87.1%, a total gas yield of 72.6%, and an energy efficiency of 18.2 g/kWh, demonstrating the potential of this approach for sustainable hydrogen production. Catalysts prepared at lower calcination temperatures or with higher relative permittivity packing materials perform better, owing to the larger Ni surface area available for catalytic reactions and the higher surface discharge facilitating the occurrence of surface reactions. In addition, the synergistic capacity in terms of toluene conversion and gas production exhibited a positive relationship with the metal surface area of catalysts and the relative permittivity of packing materials, while the relationship between reaction temperature and toluene conversion was negative.

Abstract:To improve toluene removal efficiency and reduce byproducts, a TiO2/γ-Al2O3/nickel foam catalyst was combined in and after the non-thermal plasma (NTP), leading to a plasma-driven catalysis (PDC) and plasma-assisted catalysis (PAC) process, respectively. The addition of catalysis could significantly enhance the toluene destruction with an increased CO2 selectivity and carbon balance while the byproducts, such as O3 and organic compounds, were dramatically reduced. The PAC exhibited the highest efficiency in toluene destruction due to the formation of more atomic oxygen and hydroxyl radicals from O3 catalytic decomposition. The pathways of toluene destruction by NTP and plasma-catalysis were proposed according to the identified intermediates.

Abstract:Tar and substantial CH4 and CO2 are contained in gasified fuels, which pose an obstacle to direct chemical synthesis, and this is a predominant challenge for biomass gasification technology. Herein, a packed−bed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor was built for simultaneous CH4 dry reforming and tar removal with a La−Ni/γ−Al2O3 catalyst. The interaction between CH4 dry reforming and tar removal in plasma catalysis was investigated. The results indicated that plasma catalysis can achieve high−efficiency simultaneous tar removal and CH4 dry reforming, as indicated by the reactants’ conversion (14% increase for CCH4 and CCO2 at 450 °C in the presence of tar and a 37% increase for the tar removal rate at 360 °C when CH4 and CO2 were introduced), and the mechanism for mutual promotion of CH4 dry reforming and tar removal was elucidated through catalyst characterization results. In addition, a possible reaction mechanism for tar removal via plasma catalysis was proposed. These findings provide valuable insights for simultaneous upgrading and purification of gases generated by biomass gasification.

Abstract:In this study, partial oxidation of toluene as a biomass tar surrogate was carried out in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor. In order to understand the reaction characteristics and thus potential of the approach, the effect of reaction temperature, O 2 /toluene molar ratio (OTR) and discharge power on performances was investigated by experiments and kinetic modeling. The results showed that the three factors could change the E/n and hence the G-values of species, as well as alter O 2 concentration in background gas and input energy, leading to the variation in active species production and thus, the performance. Appropriate high temperatures, as well as higher OTRs and discharge power obtained better performances by promoting toluene destruction and gas product production. Excited N 2 species play a crucial role in the process, by means of participating in reactions directly and strongly influencing on the production of secondary active species. At 300 °C, the highest toluene conversion of 100.0 % with an energy efficiency of 25.7 g/kWh was achieved without catalysts usage, a comparable performance as compared to the steam reforming by plasma catalysis, demonstrating the potential of this method for the purification of gasification gases. Furthermore, based on the rate of production (ROP) and sensitivity analyses of the model developed, as well as experimental results, the reaction mechanism was proposed.

Abstract:Based on the important effect of catalysts on the plasma-catalytic system, the CM/Z5 catalyst prepared by the incipient-wetness impregnation method is used for non-thermal plasma catalysis for toluene removal. The low-temperature plasma used is produced by dielectric barrier discharge. Toluene removal performance with single plasma is investigated by variation in experimental parameters. Results indicate that with the increase in discharge length, the selectivity of carbon dioxide increased. With the increase in toluene concentration and gas flow rate, carbon dioxide selectivity decreases gradually, while toluene conversion shows almost no difference. With the introduction of CM/Z5 catalyst into the back end of plasma, the toluene conversion rate and carbon dioxide selectivity could be significantly improved and ozone in the exhaust gas could be eliminated to meet emission standards at the same time. This work is meaningful in promoting the industrial application of plasma catalytic coupling technology to treat volatile organic compounds.

Photothermal Steam Reforming: A Novel Method for Tar Elimination in Biomass Gasification

Abstract:Tar elimination is the bottleneck which hinders the industrial application of gasification due to the risks of corrosion and blockage in downstream components. Tar production decreases the energy efficiency of gasification systems. The steam reforming is attractive for tar treatment, but the high reaction temperature limits its applications. Photothermal catalysis has the potential to decompose organic pollutants, and it is expected to improve tar removal and reduce the reaction temperature. So, the photothermal steam reforming of toluene was performed to evaluate the toluene conversion. The effects of the toluene concentration, the temperature, the steam to carbon ratio, and the ultraviolet light intensity were investigated. The results showed that, compared with the thermal steam reforming, the photothermal steam reforming could significantly improve the conversion of toluene and promote the formation of gaseous products, especially H-2. At 600 degrees C, the conversion of toluene in the photothermal steam reforming was 90.1%, which was 16.3% higher than that in the thermal steam reforming. Moreover, the mechanisms of the photothermal steam reforming were revealed. The introduction of the ultraviolet irradiation could strongly promote the toluene decomposition and alter the reaction pathways. The carbon deposition and agglomeration of the catalyst were inhibited in photothermal steam reforming. Meanwhile, the toluene removal performance and the energy consumption were compared in photothermal and thermal steam reforming. The potential applications of photothermal catalytic tar removal were also described. These findings proposed a novel approach for low-cost but high-efficiency biomass tar removal, thus promoting the clean utilization of biomass energy.
The mechanism of photothermal catalytic reforming of biomass tar: An exploratory study based on density functional theory

Abstract:Tar removal is a hot topic in the biomass gasification field. Photothermal catalytic reforming (PCR) is an emerging approach that shows high efficiency, but the mechanism and tar cracking reaction pathway under PCR are still not clear. In this paper, as a widely recognized catalyst that has both thermal and photo-catalysis effects, Ni/TiO2 was investigated and the model was calculated by density functional theory (DFT). Toluene was selected as the model tar compound, and the cracking performances were analyzed in both PCR and conventional heating conditions. It was found that H2O and toluene can be stably adsorbed on the catalyst surface but the adsorption sites are different, which provides support for the comparisons of toluene cracking pathways. The energy barriers of CC bond breaking reactions were calculated and the toluene cracking pathway showed significant changes under PCR, due to the formation of oxygen vacancy and hydroxyl radical. Toluene mainly occurs in the dissociation reaction of methyl group under conventional conditions, but toluene tends to open aromatic ring to form chain hydrocarbons under PCR conditions. It indicates that PCR shows greater activation on the aromatic ring which is crucial for tar cracking. This study confirms the change of the toluene cracking pathway under photothermal conditions by the DFT calculation method and also provides guidance for the optimization of the tar removal process and photothermal catalyst preparation.

Abstract:The practical implementation of non-thermal plasma (NTP) combined with catalysts still faces challenges due to the by-products, such as O 3 and nanoparticles. In this study, α-MnO 2 /Cordierite honeycomb monolithic (CHM) catalyst was used to reduce the by-products for NTP degradation of toluene. The by-products analysis shows that using the α-MnO 2 /CHM catalyst not only improves the degradation efficiency up to 98% and CO X selectivity to 50%, but also simultaneously and greatly reduces the release of three types of hazardous by-products, organic components, ozone, and particles. The mechanisms of toluene degradation and by-product formation were investigated through online monitoring which can be summarized in two ways: direct degradation by energetic electrons and reactive radicals in the discharge region, and deep oxidation by active oxygen species on the catalyst surface. This investigation can improve our understanding of VOC degradation by combining monolithic catalysts with plasma, and accelerate the implementation of plasma-catalyzed technology in real-world.

Abstract:Non-thermal plasma is considered a promising and attractive approach for the removal of tars from biomass gasification to deliver a clean and high quality syngas (a mixture of H2 and CO). In this study, an AC gliding arc discharge (GAD) reactor has been developed for the conversion of toluene as a tar model compound using nitrogen as a carrier gas. The presence of steam in the plasma reaction produces OH radicals which open a new reaction route for the conversion of toluene through a stepwise oxidation of toluene and intermediates, resulting in a significant enhancement in both the conversion of toluene and the energy efficiency of the plasma process. The effects of steam-to-carbon (S/C) molar ratio, toluene feed rate and specific energy input (SEI) on the performance of the plasma steam reforming of toluene have been investigated. The optimal S/C molar ratio was found to be between 2 and 3 for high toluene conversion and energy efficiency. The maximum toluene conversion of 51.8% was achieved at an optimal S/C molar ratio of 2, a toluene feed flow rate of 4.8ml/h and a SEI of 0.3kWh/m3, while the energy efficiency of the plasma process reached a maximum (∼46.3g/kWh) at a toluene feed flow rate of 9.6ml/h and a SEI of 0.19kWh/m3. H2, CO and C2H2 were identified as the major gas products with a maximum syngas yield of 73.9% (34.9% for H2 and 39% for CO). Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) has been used to understand the role of steam on the formation of reactive species in the plasma conversion of toluene. The possible reaction pathways in the plasma conversion of toluene have also been proposed by combined means of the analysis of gas and liquid samples and OES diagnostics.

Abstract:The contamination of producer gas with tar due to inefficient removal methods remains a major challenge in the bioenergy industry and a critical barrier, hindering commercial applications of biomass gasification technology. Single syngas treatment through primary and secondary tar removal method is insufficient to produce a tar free syngas. Currently widely applied tar removal methods are catalytic reforming and plasma reforming. Though both methods have hindrances of fast catalyst deactivation due to coke deposition and reduced syngas selectivity with large quantities of undesired liquid products from plasma reforming. Our review paper showed that hybrid plasma catalysis could be a breakthrough in tar reforming methods and overcome major drawbacks. Though, very little work on review articles have reported merging non-thermal plasma and heterogeneous catalyst. Plasma catalysis offers an inexpensive viable future technology of tar reforming through biomass gasification. The article assessed in-depth the synergistic effect created during the interaction of energetic plasma species and catalyst radicals in tar reforming. Review results show that merging plasma with catalysts noticeably Nickel, Non-nickel metal catalyst and zeolites gave pleasant results of tar conversion efficiency, improved gas selectivity and improved catalyst stability.
