Abstract:The interfacial solar desalination has been considered a promising method to address the worldwide water crisis without sophisticated infrastructures and additional energy consumption. Although various advanced solar evaporators have been developed, their practical applications are still restricted by the unsustainable materials and the difficulty of precise customization for structure to escort high solar-thermal efficiency. To address these issues, we employed two kinds of naturally occurring molecules, tannic acid and iron (III), to construct a low-cost, highly efficient and durable interfacial solar evaporator by three-dimensional (3D) printing. Based on a rational structural design, a robust and 3D-printed evaporator with conical array surface structure was developed, which could promote the light harvesting capacity significantly via the multiple reflections and anti-reflection effects on the surface. By optimizing the height of the conical arrays, the 3D-printed evaporator with tall-cone structure could achieve a high evaporation rate of 1.96 kg m-2 h-1 under one sun illumination, with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 94.4%. Moreover, this evaporator was also proved to possess excellent desalination performance, recycle stability, anti-salt property, underwater oil resistance, as well as adsorption capacity of organic dye contaminants for multipurpose water purification applications. It was believed that this study could provide a new strategy to fabricate low-cost, structural regulated solar evaporators for alleviating the dilemma of global water scarcity using abundant naturally occurring building blocks.

Abstract:Using solar energy to generate steam is a clean and sustainable approach to addressing the issue of water shortage. The current challenge for solar steam generation is to develop easy-to-manufacture and scalable methods which can convert solar irradiation into exploitable thermal energy with high efficiency. Although various material and structure designs have been reported, high efficiency in solar steam generation usually can be achieved only at concentrated solar illumination. For the first time, 3D printing to construct an all-in-one evaporator with a concave structure for high-efficiency solar steam generation under 1 sun illumination is used. The solar-steam-generation device has a high porosity (97.3%) and efficient broadband solar absorption (>97%). The 3D-printed porous evaporator with intrinsic low thermal conductivity enables heat localization and effectively alleviates thermal dissipation to the bulk water. As a result, the 3D-printed evaporator has a high solar steam efficiency of 85.6% under 1 sun illumination (1 kW m(-2)), which is among the best compared with other reported evaporators. The all-in-one structure design using the advanced 3D printing fabrication technique offers a new approach to solar energy harvesting for high-efficiency steam generation.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials stand out as photothermal materials for interfacial solar evaporation due to their high solar absorptance, chemical stability, adjustable structure, ease of preparation, and low cost compared to other candidate materials. Development of multifunctional carbon-based materials that can endow the fabricated evaporators with reduced energy loss and evaporation enthalpy is highly demanded to achieve extraordinary evaporation rates. Herein, high-solar-absorptivity multi-shelled hollow porous carbon nanospheres are fabricated and incorporated with an insulating hydrogel bottom layer into an integrated solar evaporator. It achieves a fast photothermal response and a remarkably high solar evaporation rate of 2.4 kg m- 2 h- 1 under one sun. Multiphysics simulation indicates that the porous multi-shelled hollow structure enables sufficient and effective interactions between water and the hydrophilic carbon surfaces, thus producing more intermediate water (IW) and lowering the evaporation enthalpy. The solar-driven water evaporation in the evaporator is probed by in-situ low-field nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation time measurements, based on which conversion of free water (FW) into IW during solar evaporation is proposed. The molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the evolution of FW clusters into IW is facilitated on the carbon surface, thus replenishing the evaporated IW and maintaining continuous high evaporation rates. The demonstrated solar evaporator exemplifies the effectiveness of structural and thermal management in enhancing solar-driven desalination.

Abstract:Solar evaporation for water purification potentially achieves abundant freshwater production without CO 2 emission. In the present study, we develop a unique kind of solar evaporators with three-dimensional biomimetic microstructures on its top surface based on a 3D printing technique. Moreover, the different wettability of their top and bottom surfaces enables them to exhibit an amazing Janus effect, achieving the rapid transportation of water from the bottom to the top surface motivated by the Laplace pressure. Additionally, the water will climb up along the surfaces of bionic microstructures on the top surface of the evaporators to enlarge the surface area of the water. Thus, there will be rapid evaporation of water when irradiated by sunlight during the day. It is demonstrated that the evaporation rate of water is 1.97 kg m −2 h −1 with a light intensity of one sun, and the photothermal conversion efficiency is larger than 92 %. In addition, the evaporation rate is still as high as 1.74 kg m −2 h −1 for seawater with an average salt concentration of 3.5 wt%. Most significantly, the fog collection rate of such an evaporator with bionic microstructures can be as high as 41.45 kg m −2 h −1 at a humidity of 99 % RH at night. The dual functions of our bionic evaporators enable amazing self-cleaning performance with fog collection to wash the crystalline salt and any other wastes off the top surface of the evaporators, promising bionic evaporators for long-lasting solar evaporation of seawater and wastewater.

Abstract:Utilizing the broad-band solar spectrum for sea water desalination is a promising method that can provide fresh water without sophisticated infrastructures. However, the solar-to-vapour efficiency has been limited due to the lack of a proper design for the evaporator to deal with either a large amount of heat loss or salt accumulation. Here, these issues are addressed via two cost-effective approaches: I) a rational design of a concave shaped supporter by 3D-printing that can promote the light harvesting capacity via multiple reflections on the surface; II) the use of a double layered photoabsorber composed of a hydrophilic bottom layer of a polydopamine (PDA) coated glass fiber (GF/C) and a hydrophobic upper layer of a carbonized poly(vinyl alcohol)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVA/PVP) hydrogel on the supporter, which provides competitive benefit for preventing deposition of salt while quickly pumping the water. The 3D-printed solar evaporator can efficiently utilize solar energy (99%) with an evaporation rate of 1.60 kg m–2 h–1 and efficiency of 89% under 1 sun irradiation. The underlying reason for the high efficiency obtained is supported by the heat transfer mechanism. The 3D-printed solar evaporator could provide cheap drinking water in remote areas, while maintaining stable performance for a long term.

Abstract:Solar evaporation is a simple, cost-effective method for producing clean water that does not require complex infrastructure and fossil energy. Although there have been significant advances in hydrogel solar evaporators, their widespread applications are still hampered by challenges related to customizing the structures to optimize solar evaporation rates and managing the pollution associated with waste hydrogel evaporators. To address these issues, we construct a customizable in structure, highly efficient and degradable interfacial solar evaporator using three-dimensional (3D) printing technique. The complex 3D microstructures can significantly enhance sunlight absorption through multiple surface reflections and anti-reflection effects, which can achieve customized evaporation performance. The optimized tree-shaped hydrogel evaporators can achieve a high evaporation rate of 2.41 kg m –2 h −1 under 1 sun. Importantly, the hydrogel evaporators exhibit degradation properties in alkaline liquids. These components can be integrated into the environment, reducing their impact on the environment and achieving sustainable utilization, offering a promising solution for alkaline wastewater purification and demonstrating the potential of environmental-friendly solar evaporator technology.

Abstract:Solar desalination driven by interfacial heating is considered a promising technique to alleviate the freshwater shortage crisis. However, its further extension and application are confined by factors such as highlighted salt accumulation, inferior energy efficiency, and poor durability. Herein, a microsized eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) core-shell nanodroplet (denoted as LMTE) with photo-cross-linking and photothermal traits, stabilized by allyl glycidyl ether (AGE)-grafting tannic acid (TA), is explored as the solar absorber for broadband light absorbing and localized micro-nano heat channeling. The LMTE nanodroplets are formulated directly with highly hydrated polymers and photosensitive species to successfully develop a water-based photothermal ink suitable for digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. As a demonstration, the LMTE composite hydrogel-forged milli-conical needle arrays with metal-phenolic network (MPN)-engineered wettability and photothermal enhancement can be printed by the digital light processing (DLP) technique and designed rationally via a bottom-up strategy. The 3D-printing hydrogel evaporator is composed of spectrum-tailored EGaIn nanodroplets for efficient photon harvesting and MPN-coated milli-cone arrays for water supplying with micro-nano channeling, which function cooperatively to bestow the 3D solar evaporator with superior solar-powered water evaporation (2.96 kg m-2 h-1, 96.93% energy efficiency) and excellent solar desalination (salt cycle and site-specific salt crystallization). Furthermore, a robust steam generating/collecting system of the 3D solar evaporator is demonstrated, providing valuable guidance for building a water-energy-agriculture nexus.

Abstract:Using hierarchical porous CuS‐cellulose composite as photothermal materials, a 3D opened hollow photothermal evaporator has been designed and fabricated to target high solar evaporation rates. Such a unique structure not only imparts the solar evaporator with an efficient water evaporation by minimizing energy loss, introducing cold evaporation surfaces for drawing additional energy from the bulk water and surrounding environment, but also fully activates evaporation on both inner and outer evaporation surfaces, thus delivering superior evaporation rates compared to the enclosed evaporators. Moreover, under convective flow this special structure effectively promotes the escape of vapor inside the evaporator to avoid the vapor accumulation, further enhancing the evaporation on inner evaporation surfaces, thus improving the evaporation rate up to11.911 kg·m−2·h−1 under a convective flow rate of 4.0 m·s−1 and 1.0 sun irradiation. The operability of the as‐prepared solar evaporator under natural environmental conditions was examined by outdoor evaporation tests. The obtained solar evaporator was demonstrated to be applicable for generating clean water from model seawater and dye wastewater. This work provides an impetus for promoting practical application of solar steam generation in seawater desalination and wastewater purification.This article is protected by copyright. High Efficient 3D Solar Interfacial Evaporator: Achieved by the Synergy of Simple Material and Structure

Abstract:Solar steam generation has attracted tremendous attention because of severe freshwater scarcity and people's high degree of recognition of solar energy. However, photothermal conversion efficiency and thermal management capability are still the key factors restricting solar steam generation. Here, we prepared an efficient 3D solar interfacial evaporator via material selection and simple structural design. The microstructure shows that the air-laid paper is made up of two layers of unidirectional fibers of different shapes, which can provide efficient water transportation and strong photon capture capability. As for macrostructure, the 3D arched evaporator can greatly reduce heat conduction loss by reducing the contact area between the evaporator and bulk water and achieve high efficiency of solar utilization throughout the day. Finally, the 3D arched structure is beneficial for steam diffusion. As a result, the evaporator showed excellent photothermal conversion efficiency and thermal management capability by the synergy of microstructure and macrostructure. It has achieved an evaporation rate of 2.0 kg m(-2) h(-1) under 1 sun illumination with an energy utilization efficiency of 93.5%, and the efficiency remained above 90% when the incidence angle changed from 90 to 45, which can produce clean water from seawater and contaminated water.

Abstract:Solar water evaporation is a sustainable, efficient, and environmental friendly solution to the freshwater production and energy crisis, which is drawing intensive research interest in recent years all over the world. In this work, we systematically summarize the design principles and recent progress of solar evaporators inspired by nature. Evaporation systems with bionic structures such as roots, stems, leaves, and even animal tissues can not only promote water transport inside the absorbers but also accelerate the solar water evaporation process, leading to a high evaporation rate and energy conversion efficiency. Most significantly, the promising applications of solar vapor generation for seawater desalination, water purification, electricity generation, evaporative cooling and photocatalytic degradation are also highlighted. Finally, the prospects and challenges of the future development of solar water evaporation are discussed in detail.

Abstract:3D Cellulose‐Based Solar Evaporators In article number 2300670, Chunhong Ye and co‐workers successfully fabricate a natural cellulose‐based 3D solar evaporator, demonstrating an excellent evaporation rate up to 4.2 kg m−2 h−1 and an energy efficiency of 173%, which is facilitated by the reduced evaporation enthalpy and energy absorption from the environment. The cellulose‐based evaporator presents a promising candidate toward high‐throughput, eco‐friendly solar steam generation devices.

Abstract:Solar-driven water evaporation has been considered a sustainable method to obtain clean water through desalination. However, its further application is limited by the complicated preparation strategy, poor salt rejection, and durability. Herein, inspired by superfast water transportation of the Nepenthes alata peristome surface and continuous bridge-arch design in architecture, a biomimetic 3D bridge-arch solar evaporator is proposed to induce Marangoni flow for long-term salt rejection. The formed double-layer 3D liquid film on the evaporator is composed of a confined water film for water supplementation and a free-flowing water film with ultrafast directional Marangoni convection for salt rejection, which functions cooperatively to endow the 3D evaporator with all-in-one function including superior solar-driven water evaporation (1.64 kg m-2 h-1, 91% efficiency for pure water), efficient solar desalination, and long-term salt-rejecting property (continuous 200 h in 10 wt% saline water) without any post-cleaning treatment. The design principle of the 3D structures is provided for extending the application of Marangoni-driven salt rejection and the investigation of structure-design-induced liquid film control in the solar desalination field. Furthermore, excellent mechanical and chemical stability is proved, where a self-sustainable and solar-powered desalination–cultivation platform is developed, indicating promising application for agricultural cultivation.

Abstract:Solar‐powered interfacial evaporation offers a cost‐effective technique for freshwater scarcity in arid areas. However, further performance improvements have encountered bottlenecks due to the lack of more simplified material design and optimized functional structures resulting in a trade‐off between photothermal conversion and steam transport. Herein, a high‐yield, green and scalable solar‐driven evaporator with multi‐bioinspired hierarchical integrated architecture modified wood surface via highly oriented nanofibers is developed. Furthermore, inspired by natural biological structures, a 3D bionic wood cribs structure (BWS) evaporator on the basis of 2D bionic butterfly scales structure (BS) with efficient light absorption, light‐to‐heat conversion, evaporation rate, as well as recyclable steam escape is integrally fabricated. As a result, this well‐designed BWS evaporator shows a high solar absorption of 96%, and a greatly promoted evaporation rate of 1.8 kg m−2 h−1 under 1 sun illumination, leading to a 23.3% higher than that of the BS. More importantly, we demonstrate that the effective convection of the BWS from sides and surface promotes sustainable steam escape to achieve continuous water evaporation. This proof of concept work provides an insightful attempt to develop scalable evaporation systems with green biomass‐derived resources and functional biomimetic structure. Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">Solar steam generation offers a sustainable strategy to mitigate global clean water scarcity. To this end, 3D photothermal evaporators have attracted increasing research interest since they can significantly improve both evaporation rate and energy efficiency. However, compared to the 2D evaporators, the 3D ones consume more raw materials and occupy more storage space, which limits their applications for practical portable solar steam generation. To address this issue, a 3D hollow and compressible photothermal evaporator is designed and fabricated which can be compressed to less than one third of its original volume, thus enabling easier transport and storage. Moreover, under 1.0 sun illumination, all evaporation surfaces of this 3D evaporator are lower in temperatures than the surrounding environment, thus providing the unique advantage of zero energy loss to the environment during solar evaporation. Due to the all-cold evaporation surfaces, during solar evaporation, the evaporator is able to harvest massive energy from both the surrounding air and bulk water, delivering an extremely high evaporation rate of up to 7.6 kg m−2 h−1 under 1.0 sun irradiation. Furthermore, seawater desalination tests demonstrate that the device has great potential for portable solar thermal desalination by delivering clean water with a salinity well below 50 ppb. </section>

Enhanced light trapping effect of hierarchical structure assembled from flower-like cobalt tetroxide and 3D-printed structure for efficient solar evaporation

Abstract:Compared with conventional two-dimensional (2D) structure, three-dimensional (3D) solar steam generators have presented a considerably higher evaporation rate due to their structure superiority. As an emerging field, 3D printing technology has been attached by significant attention due to its feasibility and designability in the fabrication of micro-nano structures. Herein, inspired by natural light-trapping structures, a novel hierarchical structure assembled from flower-like cobalt tetroxide and 3D-printed stent is prepared. Based on the geometrical light trapping effect, both the flower-like structure in cobalt tetroxide and the hollow morphology in 3D-printed stent can significantly enhance the solar absorption and conversion efficiency through multiple reflection-incidence processes. Since the wetting direction in the cylindrical structure is always from the edge to the center, there will be a large number of salt particles at the edge of the cylinder falling by the virtue of gravity, thus achieving a high salt tolerance, and this process is illustrated by molecular dynamics simulation. Along with the rapid photo-thermal response in the solar spectrum, this 3D-printed hierarchical structure coated with flower-like cobalt tetroxide has achieved a high steam generation rate of 2.028 kg m-2h−1 under one sun irradiation (1.0 kW/m2) and excellent decontamination ability for organic dye-containing solution. Meanwhile, the desirable steam generation rate can maintain an average value of more than 1.8 kg·m-2h−1 for long time. This 3D-printed solar evaporator is highly efficient and salt-tolerant, attributed to the enhanced geometrical light-trapping and artificial channel-array structure, presenting an effective solution for enhancing solar absorption and conversion.
