Abstract:In this fluid dynamics video we study the dynamics of miscible vortex rings falling in ambient strongly (near two-layer) stratified fluid. Experiments and direct numerical simulations using the variable density Navier-Stokes (VARDEN) solver are presented and compared. Critical phenomena are identified depending upon the key parameters of the experiment (fluid and ring densities, upper layer vortex travel distance, etc) in which the descending dense vortex ring may experience complete trapping, partial trapping, or fissioning into a cascade of smaller vortices. The interaction of the vortex ring with the upper layer fluids leads to viscous entrainment which alters the effective buoyancy of the ring. Upon impinging on a density transition, the entrained fluid imparts different dynamics as it attempts to regain equilibrium leading to the critical behaviors.

Abstract:We investigate experimentally the nonlinear structures that develop from interacting vortex rings induced by a sinusoidally oscillating ellipsoidal disk in fluid at rest. We vary the scaled amplitude or Keulegan-Carpenter number 0.3 < N-KC = 2 pi Lambda/c < 1.5, where A is the oscillation amplitude and c is the major diameter of the disk, and the scaled frequency or Stokes number 100 < beta = f c(2)/nu < 1200, where f is the frequency of oscillation and. is the kinematic viscosity. Broadly consistent with global linear stability analyses, highly organized nonlinear structures with clear azimuthal wave number emerge as sequential vortex rings are shed from the disk. These organized structures exhibit wave numbers ranging from m = 2 to m = 9 and can be further divided into two distinct classes, distinguished by the phase and symmetry properties above and below the disk. We find some discrepancies between experiments and linear stability analysis, due to the inherent nonlinear mechanisms in the experiments, particulary on the boundary between the two branches, presenting unevenly distributed flow structures along the azimuthal direction.

Abstract:We propose a natural model to probe in a controlled fashion the instability of interacting vortex rings shed from the edge of an oblate spheroid disk of major diameter c, undergoing oscillations of frequency f_{0} and amplitude A. We perform a Floquet stability analysis to determine the characteristics of the instability modes, which depend strongly on the azimuthal (integer) wave number m. We vary two key control parameters, the Keulegan-Carpenter number K_{C}=2πA/c and the Stokes number β=f_{0}c^{2}/ν, where ν is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. We observe two distinct flow regimes. First, for sufficiently small β, and hence low frequency of oscillation corresponding to relatively weak interaction between sequentially shedding vortex rings, symmetry breaking occurs directly to a single unstable mode with m=1. Second, for sufficiently large yet fixed values of β, corresponding to a higher oscillation frequency and hence stronger ring-ring interaction, the onset of asymmetry is predicted to occur due to two branches of high m instabilities as the amplitude is increased, with m=1 structures being dominant only for sufficiently large values of K_{C}. These two branches can be distinguished by the phase properties of the vortical structures above and below the disk. The region in (K_{C},β) parameter space where these two high m instability branches arise can be described accurately in terms of naturally defined Reynolds numbers, using appropriately chosen characteristic length scales. We subsequently carry out direct numerical simulations of the fully three-dimensional flow to verify the principal characteristics of the Floquet analysis, in particular demonstrating that high wave-number symmetry-breaking generically occurs when vortex rings sequentially interact sufficiently strongly.

Abstract:A bubble expanding and collapsing near a solid boundary develops a liquid jet toward the boundary. The jet leaves a torus bubble and induces vortices in the liquid that persist long after the bubble oscillations have ceased. The vortices are studied numerically in axial symmetry and compared to experiments in the literature. The flow field is visualized with different methods: vorticity with superimposed flow-direction arrows for maps at a time instant and colored-liquid-layer flow-field maps (dye advection) for following the complete long-term fluid flow up to a chosen time since bubble generation. Bubbles with equal energy—maximum radius in a free liquid Rmax∞= 500 μm—are studied for different distances Dinit from the solid boundary. The interval of normalized distances D* = Dinit/Rmax∞ from 0.4 to 1.8 is covered. Two types of vortices were reported in experiments, one moving toward the solid boundary and one moving away from it. This finding is reproduced numerically with higher resolution of the flow field and in more detail. The higher detail reveals that the two types of vortices have different rotation directions and coexist with individually varying vorticity amplitude throughout the interval studied. In a quite narrow part of the interval, the two types change their strength and extent with the result of a reversal of the dominating rotational direction of the fluid flow. Thereby, the experimentally found transition interval could be reproduced and refined. It is interesting to note that in the vortex transition interval, the erosion of a solid surface is strongly augmented.
Existence, uniqueness and stability of steady vortex rings of small cross-section

Abstract:This paper is concerned with steady vortex rings in an ideal fluid of uniform density, which are special global axi-symmetric solutions of the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equation. We systematically establish the existence, uniqueness and nonlinear orbital stability of steady vortex rings of small cross-section for which the potential vorticity is constant throughout the core. The latter two answer a long-standing question since the pioneering work of Fraenkel and Berger \cite{BF1} (Acta Math., 1974). To achieve our goal, we rescale the Stokes stream function of vortex ring by its cross-section radius, and expand it at the well-known Rankine vortex using Taylor's formula, where the estimates for coefficients are obtained by a decomposition according to Green's function and local Pohozaev identities. The main observations are: The stream function is even and has a translational invariance in $z$-direction; the zero point for the $r$-coefficient of linear term in its expansion determines the asymptotic location of vortex ring, which appears as the condition to eliminate the degenerate direction in Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction argument for existence; the non-vanishing condition of the second order $r$-coefficient at foresaid zero point is verified as one of the essential factors for uniqueness, while the negativity means that these vortex rings maximizes the functional composed of kinetic energy and impulse. By applying the Arnol'd's dual variational principle together with the uniqueness result, we are finally able to prove the nonlinear orbital stability of thin vortex rings. This result gives a large class of stable vortex rings supported on topological tori, which is different from Hill's spherical vortex discussed by Choi \cite{Choi20} (Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 2023).

Abstract:We study the impact of spatial confinement on the dynamics of three-dimensional excitation vortices with circular filaments. In a chemically active medium we observe a decreased contraction of such scroll rings and even expanding ones, despite of their positive filament tension. We propose a kinematical model which takes into account the interaction of the scroll ring with a confining Neumann boundary. The model reproduces all experimentally observed regimes of ring evolution, and correctly predicts the results obtained by numerical simulations of the underlying reaction-diffusion equations.

Abstract:An ultrasound-based Lagrangian particle tracking (echo-LPT) method is used to investigate path-dependent quantities for confined vortex rings in dense suspensions with volume fractions up to 40%. The echo-LPT measurement technique is successfully validated through a close comparison of the pixel displacements collected with established ultrasound image velocimetry methods. The carrier phase of the suspension is tracked through the vortex ring in transitional and turbulent circulation-based Reynolds numbers of , . Furthermore, fluid transport and residence time are obtained using pathline extension techniques for entrained and recirculating particles in order to compare with traditional Eulerian analysis. The fluid transport and residence time results show that the entrained fluid originates from similar locations and generally indicate that there is no dependence or effect of changing volume fraction. These results show that the convective entrainment mechanisms for the forming vortex rings are insensitive to changes in and volume fraction. Exceptions are found for the volume fraction 40% cases where increases in nonlinear fluid behaviour and particle–particle interaction are thought to inhibit vortex-ring roll-up and reduce entrainment.

Abstract:The structures of the flow induced by a disk performing sinusoidal oscillations in fluid at rest are investigated mainly by means of flow visualization. We vary the Keulegan-Carpenter numbers between 0.3 and 1.5, and the Stokes numbers between 100 and 1200. Consistent with the linear stability analysis, we observe organized modes with clearly countable numbers of waves emerging as sequential vortex rings shedding from the oscillating disk. These organized modes can be further divided into two branches, which are distinguished by the phase properties of the vortical structures above and below the disk. The highest wavenumber m=9 is recorded in our visualization.

Abstract:A finite difference scheme in cylindrical coordinates was used to study the three-dimensional (3D) motion of a vortex ring with swirl and the passage interaction between two vortex rings. For the 3D evolution of a single thin ring, the azimuthal perturbation modes grow linearly in the early state. According to their growth rates, two bands of growing waves, which correspond to the first and the second radial mode respectively, can be observed. The result is similar to the prediction of short wave instability theory for swirl-free vortex rings. For the passage process between two rings, results show that the azimuthal velocity is in inverse proportion to radius while the azimuthal vorticity is in proportion to radius during the interaction.

Abstract:Dynamics and instability of a vortex ring impinging on a wall were investigated by means of large eddy simulation for two vortex core thicknesses corresponding to thin and thick vortex rings. Various fundamental mechanisms dictating the flow behaviors, such as evolution of vortical structures, formation of vortices wrapping around vortex rings, instability and breakdown of vortex rings, and transition from laminar to turbulent state, have been studied systematically. The evolution of vortical structures is elucidated and the formation of the loop-like and hair-pin vortices wrapping around the vortex rings (called briefly wrapping vortices) is clarified. Analysis of the enstrophy of wrapping vortices and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in flow field indicates that the formation and evolution of wrapping vortices are closely associated with the flow transition to turbulent state. It is found that the temporal development of wrapping vortices and the growth rate of axial flow generated around the circumference of the core region for the thin ring are faster than those for the thick ring. The azimuthal instabilities of primary and secondary vortex rings are analyzed and the development of modal energies is investigated to reveal the flow transition to turbulent state. The modal energy decay follows a characteristic -5/3 power law, indicating that the vortical flow has become turbulence. Moreover, it is identified that the TKE with a major contribution of the azimuthal component is mainly distributed in the core region of vortex rings. The results obtained in this study provide physical insight of the mechanisms relevant to the vortical flow evolution from laminar to turbulent state.
A Study of Vortex Ring Generation by a Circular Disc

Abstract:A vortex ring is a region where the fluid mostly spins around an imaginary axis line that forms a closed loop. It is a fundamental phenomenon for the fluid passing by an object. In general, there are two methods associated with the axisymmetric vortex generation: fluid discharge from an orifice or a nozzle, and disc start-up instantly. Recent study by Yang (2012) showed that the different mechanisms of vortex generation could lead to a similar formation process and a universal principle of the optimal vortex formation could exist. Present work is mainly based on a numerical simulation study of disc vortex ring formation. A commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics solver is employed to carry out the simulation. The simulation parameters are selected the same as those of Yang’s (2012) experimental study. The model is built with fluid passing by a 30mm diameter and 2mm thickness disc in a large computational domain. The simulation results are validated with experimental data. By studying the Iso-surface, representative values, i.e. size of both vortex ring and vortex ring core, circulation and kinetic energy during the formation phases of the vortex ring are investigated. Comparison and analyses between the numerical simulation and the experimental data will be given in detail.

Abstract:The vortex dynamics in a stratified environment is of fundamental importance in various flow systems, however, the mechanism of successive vortex–interface interactions remains not fully understood. This study investigates synthetic jet vortex rings impinging on a water–oil interface by experiment and numerical simulation. Two cases in the laminar and transitional regimes are concerned with the Froude number (Fr) of 0.35 and 0.82, respectively. The vortex rings for the two cases follow a similar evolution with three distinct stages, including vortex free-travel, vortex–interface interaction and vortex stretching. As products of the vortex–interface interaction, the secondary vortex rings are baroclinically generated in both water and oil followed by the formation of hairpin vortices through azimuthal deformation. Distinguished from an isolated vortex–interface interaction, complex interactions occur between the primary vortex ring and hairpin vortices, which can enhance the vortex ring instability in existence of the stratification for the laminar case. However, the vortex ring instability for the transitional case can develop earlier due to nonlinear effects with increasing Reynolds number. The spatio-temporal properties of the interface deformation and interfacial waves are analysed. The maximum penetration height of vortex rings scales with Fr 2 as that for the isolated situation. Particularly, the transitional case is found to produce destabilization of the interfacial waves at a further radial location. The mechanism is revealed by connecting the dynamics of the vortex and the interface, which can be attributed to the radial development of perturbances stemming from the vortex ring instability under strong vortex–interface interaction.

Abstract:Inviscid coaxial interactions of two vortex rings, including head-on collisions and leapfrogging motions, are considered using a contour dynamics technique. Interactions of vortex rings with solid bodies are also investigated by combining the contour dynamics technique with a boundary integral equation method. Numerical results show that a clean, successful passage motion is possible for two vortex rings with not too thick cores. In both cases of head-on collisions and leapfrogging motions, very large core deformations are observed when two vortex rings get close to, each other. A head-tail structure is formed in the later stage of a head-on collision of two fat vortices. Numerical results also show that a vortex ring will stretch and slow down when it moves toward a solid boundary will shrink and speed up when it moves away from a solid boundary, and will either translate steadily or approach an oscillating asymptotic state when it is far away from any boundaries.

Abstract:The article presents the results of direct numerical simulation of a turbulent vortex ring with a moderate Reynolds number, interacting with the field of external turbulent fluctuations. The ring is formed by buoyancy forces from a spherically-shaped volume of elevated temperature. We consider the interaction of the ring with the field of turbulent fluctuations (of temperature and velocity) located in the form of a horizontal layer in front of the ring. The effect of separation of vortices by the sign of vorticity in a layer of fluctuations (with respect to the rotation of the ring) during the passage of the ring through this field has been found. This effect first causes the ring to slow down when the fluctuations pass outside the ring, and then to accelerate with decreasing radius when the fluctuations pass through its center. Due to buoyancy effects in the fluctuations layer, the separation of hot and cold air occurs. During the interaction with the ring, this leads to the accumulation of the reduced temperature in the core of the ring, while the increased temperature is accumulated near the axis. This temperature distribution results in a baroclinic vorticity generation leading to the reduction of the ring radius.

Abstract:Direct numerical simulations were used to study the dynamics of a vortex ring impacting a wall at normal incidence. The boundary layer formed as the ring approaches the wall undergoes separation and roll-up to form a secondary vortex ring. The secondary ring can develop azimuthal instabilities which grow rapidly owing to vortex stretching and tilting in the presence of the mean strain field generated by the primary vortex ring. The stability of the secondary ring was investigated through complementary numerical experiments and stability analysis. Both perturbed and unperturbed evolutions of the secondary ring were simulated at a Reynolds number of about 645, based on the initial primary-ring propagation velocity and ring diameter. The linear evolution of the secondary vortex-ring instability was modelled analytically by making use of a quasi-steady approximation. This allowed a localized stability analysis following Widnall & Sullivan's (1973) earlier treatment of an isolated vortex ring. Amplitude evolution and growth-rate predictions from this analysis are in good agreement with the simulation results. The analysis shows that the secondary vortex ring is unstable to long-wavelength perturbations, even though an isolated ring having similar characteristics would be stable.

Dynamics of a polarized vortex ring

Abstract:This paper builds on our claim that most vortical structures in transitional and turbulent flows are partially polarized. Polarization is inferred by the application of helical wave decomposition. We analyse initially polarized isolated viscous vortex rings through direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations using divergence-free axisymmetric eigenfunctions of the curl operator. Integral measures of the degree of polarization, such as the fractions of energy, enstrophy, and helicity associated with right-handed (or left-handed) eigenfunctions, remain nearly constant during evolution, thereby suggesting that polarization is a persistent feature. However, for polarized rings an axial vortex (tail) develops near the axis, where the local ratio of right- to left-handed vorticities develops significant non-uniformities due to spatial separation of peaks of polarized components. Reconnection can occur in rings when polarized and is clearly discerned from the evolution of axisymmetric vortex surfaces; but interestingly, the location of reconnection cannot be inferred from the vorticity magnitude. The ring propagation velocity U p decreases monotonically as the degree of initial polarization increases. Unlike force-balance arguments, two explanations based on vortex dynamics provided here are not restricted to thin rings and predict reduction in U p correctly. These results reveal surprising differences among the evolutionary dynamics of polarized, partially polarized, and unpolarized rings.

Abstract:In this paper we present the results from numerical calculations, based upon the Navier–Stokes equations at relatively high Reynolds number, of the formation of a vortex ring when fluid is ejected from a circular tube. Our results are compared with the experiments of Didden (1979), and the inviscid flow calculations of Nitsche & Krasny (1994). Reasonable agreement is achieved except for the rate of shedding of circulation during the initial stages of ring formation. The theoretically predicted rate of shedding is substantially higher than that predicted by Didden. By contrast the inviscid theory predicts an anomalously high rate of initial shedding. We offer explanations for both of these apparent discrepancies.

Vortex Dynamics in Rotating Rayleigh-Bénard Convection

Abstract:We investigate the spatial distribution and dynamics of the vortices in rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a reduced Rayleigh-number range $1.3{\le}Ra/Ra_{c}{\le}166$. Under slow rotations ($Ra{\gtrsim}10Ra_{c}$), the vortices are randomly distributed. The size-distribution of the Voronoi cells of the vortex centers is well described by the standard $\Gamma$ distribution. In this flow regime the vortices exhibit Brownian-type horizontal motion. The probability density functions of the vortex displacements are, however, non-Gaussian at short time scales. At modest rotating rates ($4Ra_{c}{\le}Ra{\lesssim}10Ra_{c}$) the centrifugal force leads to radial vortex motions, i.e., warm cyclones (cold anticyclones) moving towards (outward from) the rotation axis. The mean-square-displacements of the vortices increase faster than linearly at large time. This super-diffusive behavior can be satisfactorily explained by a Langevin model incorporating the centrifugal force. In the rapidly rotating regime ($1.6Ra_{c}{\le}Ra{\le}4Ra_{c}$) the vortices are densely distributed, with the size-distribution of their Voronoi cells differing significantly from the standard $\Gamma$ distribution. The hydrodynamic interaction of neighboring vortices results in formation of vortex clusters. Inside clusters the correlation of the vortex velocity fluctuations is scale free, with the correlation length being approximately $30\%$ of the cluster length. We examine the influence of cluster forming on the dynamics of individual vortex. Within clusters, cyclones exhibit inverse-centrifugal motion as they submit to the motion of strong anticyclones, while the velocity for outward motion of the anticyclones is increased. Our analysis show that the mobility of isolated vortices, scaled by their vorticity strength, is a simple power function of the Froude number.

Abstract:Gharib and Dabiri presented Pinch-off of Vortex Rings based on the Kelvin-Benjiamin variation principle. They proposed ‘optimal vortex formation’ and explain the principles underlining unsteady motions. However, we can not know clearly how to build-up the relationship between the conservation laws, such as momentum and energy. In this paper, our focus is on the whole vortex structure, rather than the pinch-off structure. Here, the whole vortex ring structure includes primary leading vortex ring and the secondary vortex ring as a whole strcture. Besides, we investigate 1) the dynamic process about the whole structure’s formation and evolution, 2) how and how much the momentum and energy transfer affect the instantaneous force. Taking this conventional vortex ring problem as example, we also want to explain some basic Unsteady aerodynamics features. Firstly, this paper examines the impulse, as the role of momentum of the vortex ring for unbounded flows, in an attempt to study the contribution of the impulse changes in the wake vertical structures to the reactive instantaneous force exerting on the body. The mechanism of generating the reactive unsteady force is explained by investigating the interaction between vortices in double-stroke propulsion. Numerical calculations suggest that the maximum force gains an additional increase in the second stroke than in the first one, which is dependent on the stroke length. The favorable condition is that the vortex ring generated in the second stroke is well-developed and no secondary vortex appears. It is expected that the results attained from the one-dimensional unsteady motion can be applied to more common flapping motion in the animal kingdom. Secondly, this paper also simulates the growing process of vortex ring numerically, and then the boundary of vortex ring can be defined on the basis of stream function with body coordinate system, and analyses the physical feather parameters of vortex ring with different formation times. Compared with the Gharib’s experimental conclusions and the analytical results based on Slug model, stream function method can determine the boundary of vortex ring and the physical parameters of vortex ring reasonably. Moreover, the radius of vortex core increases with formation time(defined as stroke of piston/the diameter of piston:L/D), but the ability of entrainment decreases with formation time, when the formation time of vortex ring is smaller than four. However, when the formation time exceeds four, the radius of vortex ring core no longer increases with formation time and the entrainment ability begins to increase.
