Abstract:Stereoregularity significantly influences the crystallization, mechanical, and thermal properties of polymers. In this work, we investigate crystallization behaviors and molecular dynamics of atactic (a)-, isotactic (i)-, and syndiotactic (s)hydrogenated poly(norbornene) (hPNB)s by using small-angle X-ray scattering and solid-state (ss) NMR. a-hPNB exhibits a much higher crystallinity (Phi(c)) (82%) and long period (L) (80 nm) than i- and s-hPNB (50-55% and 17-21 nm). Moreover, in the s-hPNB crystalline region, chain dynamics is not thermally activated up to the melting temperature (T-m), while in the crystalline regions of i- and a-hPNB, small amplitude motions occur in a slow dynamic regime of 10(-2)- 10(2) s. The molecular dynamics follows Arrhenius behavior in a-hPNB up to the crystal-crystal transition temperature (T-cc), while these dynamics are surprisingly saturated in i-hPNB under these conditions. Temperature dependence of the molecular dynamics leads to different crystal-crystal transitions between i- and a-hPNBs: i-hPNB changes the trans conformation to the gauche one due to the localized bond rotations where chain dynamics is restricted, whereas a-hPNB keeps a nearly trans conformation and conducts fast chain dynamics due to the amplified C-C bond rotations in the high-temperature phase. Such fast chain dynamics leads to unique crystallization behaviors of hPNB, specifically in the atactic configuration due to configurational disorder coupled with conformational flexibility.

Abstract:Rigid amorphous fraction (RAF) in bulk and thin‐film states of isotactic polystyrene (iPS) was studied as a function of crystalline fraction (CF). The CF increased with isothermal cold crystallization in initially amorphous, melt‐quenched bulk iPS samples. Assessed by differential scanning calorimetry, RAF in bulk iPS increased and then decreased with increasing crystallization time and CF. Specific RAF, that is, RAF/CF, decreased with increasing CF. Using ellipsometry, similar behaviors of RAF and specific RAF as functions of CF were observed in initially amorphous iPS thin films. These results indicate that specific RAF in iPS exhibits a continuous decrease from slightly below 2 at very low CF to ~0.2 at the maximum CF, independent of sample type and characterization method. This trend of decreasing specific RAF is consistent with a progression of crystal perfection during cold crystallization which is associated with lamellae thickening and decoupling between crystalline and amorphous regions. Qualitatively similar behaviors of RAF and specific RAF have been reported in other semi‐crystalline polymers and in our recent studies of syndiotactic polystyrene, indicating that this trend of decreasing specific RAF with increasing CF is general for many semi‐crystalline polymers. Finally, maximum CF is strongly reduced by nanoscale confinement in thin iPS films.

Abstract:Molecular orientations of the crystalline and the amorphous phases are studied in relation to morphology using all instrument constructed for simultaneous kinetic measurement of microscopic infrared (MicIR) dichroism from a predetermined sampling area and macroscopic stress of isotactic polypropylene (W) thin film uniaxially stretched at a constant strain rate at room temperature. The morphology imposes important influences oil profiles of MicIR dichroism as a function of stretching, time and also on a relationship between the orientation functions, f(c) and f(am), of the crystalline and the amorphous phases. Linear relationships between f(c) and f(am) are found for the local areas without giant spherulite inclusions when f(am) <0.3 similar to 0.4, suggesting the harmonious developments of amorphous chain deformation and lamellar ant orientation during the necking propagation. The proportionality constant between and f(c) and f(am) is not universal but is strongly dependent on the morphology of the surrounding area where the local area under examination is located. The linear relationship between f(c) and f(am) is completely invalidated for describing the relationship between the amorphous chain deformation and the lamellar orientation inside the spherulites, which reveals that the deformation mechanism in the spherulite is different from that in the microcrystalline region.

Abstract:The orientation behaviors of macromolecules in the microcrystalline and the amorphous regions of two isotactic polypropylene films with different degrees of inhomogeneity are studied using an instrument constructed for simultaneous kinetic measurement of microscopic IR (MicIR) dichroism and macroscopic stress at constant elongation rate. Reliability of IR data obtained by the kinetic measurement is demonstrated. The influence of the necking on the molecular orientation is revealed pursuing the time profiles of the MicIR dichroism sampled in a same small sampling area that is initially located at the center of the film but continuously moves during stretching due to the inhomogeneity of the sample. The dramatic molecular orientation in the sampling area is found to mainly occur during the process that the necking passes through this area and is almost independent of the macroscopic stress-strain relationship. The dichroism differences in different locations of the microcrystalline region next to a giant spherulite are shown to exemplify the influence of the inhomogeneity on the molecular orientation behavior.

Abstract:The molecular orientations in the crystalline and the amorphous phases in a quenched isotactic polypropylene (iPP) film with a smectic structure are studied using an instrument constructed for simultaneous kinetic measurement of microscopic infrared (MicIR) dichroism from a predetermined sampling area with a size of 200 × 200 μm2 and macroscopic stress of film uniaxially stretched at a constant elongation rate at 30 °C. Local deformation behavior in the sampling area is determined for one sample using a method of photogrammetry. During the passage of the necking through the sampling area, the local extension ratio λ(t) increases fast from 1.5 to 5, which induces the rapid orientation of iPP chains in both the crystalline and the amorphous phases. The orientation function of the amorphous phase, fam, from the mesoscale deformation of the sampling area is found to be well described by the pseudo-affine deformation mechanism, since the local area shrinks anisotropically during the passage of the neck shoulde...

Abstract:The techniques of wide-angle X-ray diffraction, infra-red spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry were used to characterize the glass transition and crystallization behavior of freeze-dried isotactic polystyrene (iPS) derived from dilute solutions. It was found that there is a concentration boundary for the original solution: below the boundary, the freeze-dried iPS samples are poorly crystallized but the chains are in a highly ordered 31 helix state; above the concentration boundary, the freeze-dried iPS is in a completely disordered amorphous state.

Abstract:Semicrystalline polymers constitute some of the most widely used materials in the world, and their functional properties are intimately connected to their structure on a range of length scales. Many of these properties depend on the micro- and nanoscale heterogeneous distribution of crystalline and amorphous phases, but this renders the interpretation of ensemble averaged measurements challenging. We use superlocalized widefield single-particle tracking in conjunction with AFM phase imaging to correlate the crystalline morphology of lithium-triflate-doped poly(ethylene oxide) thin films to the motion of individual fluorescent probes at the nanoscale. The results demonstrate that probe motion is intrinsically isotropic in amorphous regions and that, without altering this intrinsic diffusivity, closely spaced, often parallel, crystallite fibers anisotropically constrain probe motion along intercalating amorphous channels. This constraint is emphasized by the agreement between crystallite and anisotropic probe trajectory orientations. This constraint is also emphasized by the extent of the trajectory confinement correlated to the width of the measured gaps between adjacent crystallites. This study illustrates with direct nanoscale correlations how controlled and periodic arrangement of crystalline domains is a promising design principle for mass transport in semicrystalline polymer materials without compromising their mechanical stability.
Detection and Characterization of Folded-Chain Clusters in the Structured Melt of Isotactic Polypropyl-Ene.

Abstract:Despite ceaseless efforts in past decades, the memory effect of semi-crystalline polymers has not been elucidated completely yet. An important reason why is that residual lamellar crystals in the structured melt are difficult to characterize. Recently, we developed a new small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) theory [Li et al. (2019). IUCrJ, 6, 968–983] and Fourier transform method [Li et al. (2020). CrystEngComm, 22, 3042–3058] for lamellar crystals that could derive structural information from SAXS readily. In this study, we tried to employ the new theory and method to characterize residual lamellar crystals in the structured melt. It was found that although scattering peaks cannot be observed in raw scattering profiles, they actually exist. Subtracting free-melt scattering and multiplying by q4 benefit the observation of these weak scattering peaks. With the new Fourier transform method, it was found that indeed as proposed previously, thicker lamellar crystals exist in the structured melt. To determine the lateral size of residual lamellar crystal especially, a new method was developed under the guidance of the new theory. With the new method, it was found that although the crystallinity is very low (∼1% at 174°C), the lateral sizes in the structured melts are still large, e.g. 45.3 nm at 174°C, much greater than the critical nucleation size. This implies that these residual lamellar crystals can act as athermal nuclei after quenching to a lower temperature, as proposed by Ziabicki & Alfonso [(1994). Colloid Polym. The Spatial Correlation Between Crystalline and Amorphous Orientations of Isotactic Polypropylene During Plastic Deformation:An in Situ Observation with FTIR Imaging

Abstract:On the basis of research method in FTIR imaging, we made a heterogeneous thin film of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) that contains a few large spherulites (∼150 μm) which are surrounded by small spherulites (∼15 μm) for tensile testing. The evolution processes of crystalline and amorphous orientations of iPP are monitored with its characteristic peaks at 998 and 973 cm−1, respectively. By introducing the correlation images, the analysis demonstrates the relationships between the orientation evolutions of crystalline and amorphous phases in a space of 250 μm × 250 μm detecting area. During the plastic deformation, crystalline orientation is higher than amorphous orientation outside the large spherulite, while that is opposite inside the region. In addition, the evolutions of crystalline and amorphous orientations almost keep a positive correlation.

Abstract:The degree of crystallinity in polymer materials significantly affects their physical properties. However, the distribution of the degree of crystallinity within polymer materials has not been considered even though it should, equally importantly, affect the properties. Herein, we investigate how the degree of crystallinity is spatially distributed in poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) films utilizing Raman spectrum. The results indicate that the degree of crystallinity is not uniform throughout the films but presents a distribution along the radial direction of spherulite, with lower degree of crystallinity in the spherulite center. Consequently, the melting range exhibits a similar spatial distribution, with the spherulite center starts to melt at a lower temperature. This work begins to provide an additional structural feature of crystalline polymers that should greatly affect the polymer properties.

Abstract:Given the structural hierarchy in semicrystalline polymers, there is a compelling need to elucidate the mechanisms behind the instability of the interlamellar amorphous phase at the scale of lamellar stacks, which constitute fundamental building units with a biphasic nature. We specifically chose a hard-elastic isotactic polypropylene film composed of highly oriented lamellar stacks as a model sample. By utilizing synchrotron-based in situ wide-, small-, and ultrasmall-angle X-ray scattering techniques (WAXS/SAXS/USAXS), along with postmortem scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, we studied the structural instabilities of lamellar stacks across a wide range of strain rates (from 0.001 to 0.5 s(-1)). Owing to the inherently dynamical asymmetry of the amorphous phase, we propose an insight into its instability characterized by stress-induced microphase separation based on the stress-concentration coupling model, where the extreme outcome aligns with the classical viewpoint, the formation of a fibrillar bridge/void system. With an increase in the Weissenberg number, a greater number of stress transmitters within the amorphous phase tend to be retained, thereby impeding the advancement of stress-induced microphase separation but promoting the crystalline phase instability. Furthermore, during the transition from a slow to a rapid stretching process, the amorphous phase instability undergoes a shift from a growth-dominated to a nucleation-dominated mode. This kinetic transition results in a more uniform dispersion of lamellar clusters that encompass unstable amorphous layers.

Abstract:Single-molecule single crystals were grown from amorphous droplets of fractionated isotactic polystyrene. The crystals were analyzed by electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The molecular mass distribution could be matched with a statistical analysis of single-molecule particles (amorphous and crystals). Proof was brought that single molecules of isotactic polystyrene do not reach equilibrium dimensions on crystallization, rather assume the lamellar morphology with chain-folded macroconformation, also known from crystallization of polymolecular crystals. Abstract:Crystallization temperature (T-c)-dependent crystal orientations within nanoconfined lamellae have been studied in a self-assembled poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS) diblock copolymer. The copolymer possesses number-average molecular weights of (M) over bar (PEO)(n) = 8.7K and (M) over bar (PS)(n) = 9.2K, and it forms a microphase-separated lamellar structure in the melt. It has been found that the PEO crystal (the c axis) orientations are determined by only varying the Tc.(1) Based on real-time simultaneous two-dimensional (2D) small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) experiments, the formation of crystal orientation is found in an early stage of PEO crystallization confined between the PS lamellae. To understand whether the crystal orientation is determined during the primary nucleation or crystal growth step, specifically designed self-seeded crystallization experiments are carried out using 2D SAXS and WAXS techniques. Experimental results suggest that primary nuclei (self-seeds) do not possess specific orientation with respect to the PS lamellar surface normal, disregarding the history of crystal orientation in the samples generated before the self-seeding process. It is found that the initial stage of crystal growth determines the final crystal orientation in the nanoconfined lamellae. Studies of the correlation lengths (apparent crystallite sizes) along both [120] directions of the PEO crystals with various crystal orientations indicate that the PEO crystals formed in nanoconfined lamellae undergo a change from a one-dimensional to a two-dimensional growth with increasing T-c.
Real‐time AFM Study of Lamellar Growth of Semi‐crystalline Polymers

Abstract:Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used to study the lamellar development during the crystallization and melting processes of poly(bisphenol A-co-alkyl ether) (BA-Cn) films. High-resolution and real-time AFM phase imaging enables us to observe the detailed growth process of the lamellae. At the early stage of the lamellar growth, embryos appeared firstly and some disappeared on the film surface after a period of time. The stable embryo developed into a single lamella. Then the lamella developed into a lamellar sheaf through branching and splaying. Our results revealed that the branches of the lamellae were formed by induced nucleation and it was also dependent on the crystallization temperature. Real-time AFM study of the melting, recrystallization and remelting processes of lamellae indicated that the thermal stability of different segments of a single lamella is different and that the thermal stability of the different lamellae is also different even if they develop at the same annealing temperature. The orientation and the development of the lamellae at the characteristic eyes and boundaries of the spherulites are observed in details.
Retrospecting the relationship between interlamellar amorphous structure and intrinsic modulus of semicrystalline polymers via in-situ positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and in-situ X-ray scattering

Abstract:The structure-property relationship of the interlamellar amorphous phase in semicrystalline polymers has been a fundamental yet controversial topic in polymer physics for several decades. The intricate hierarchical structure and limited availability of experimental techniques pose significant challenges in quantitatively characterizing the evolution of the amorphous structure and establishing its connection to the mechanical behavior. In this work, the unannealed and annealed isotactic polypropylene hard-elastic films composed of idealized series-arranged lamellar stacks are studied to simplify the mechanical coupling between the two phases. By utilizing the synchrotron-based in-situ small and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) techniques, the apparent modulus and overall volumetric strain of the amorphous phase are estimated. Moreover, with our significant progress in the counting rate of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), the minute-scale structure evolution of amorphous phase (free-volume pores) during the tensile process is now feasible to be captured. Combing in-situ X-ray scattering and in-situ PALS results, in the elastic regime, it is found that triaxial stress in the amorphous phase leads to the expansion of free-volume pores (about 23% volume increase for the annealed sample, 35% volumetric strain for the unannealed one) and density decrement within occupied volume by overcoming Van Der Waals force. Our quantitative analysis also reveals that the annealing process not only enhances the crystallinity and aspect ratio of lamellae but also weakens the intrinsic modulus and chain packing density of amorphous phase.

Abstract:The lamellar structures in nylon 6,6 were characterized at several temperatures using synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to monitor the changes during the Brill transition at similar to 160 degrees C (T-B) The integrated intensity and the coherence length of the lamellar stacks increase during heating above T-B. In contrast, during cooling, the intensity increases below T-B whereas the coherence length increases up to T-B and remains unchanged upon further cooling. The increase in SAXS intensity observed above T-B during heating is attributed to the enhanced contrast resulting from a decrease in the packing density of the amorphous chain segments. It is suggested that the changes in the packing of the crystalline stems, as they do occur during crystalline phase transitions, provoke a proportionate response in the packing of the amorphous chain segments in the interlamellar regions. The thermal expansion coefficient of the amorphous segments calculated from the X-ray diffraction data above T-B is 5.9 x 10(-4)/K (molar thermal expansion coefficient, 854 x 10(-10) m(3)/(mol K)), and this is in reasonable agreement with the published values.

Abstract:Constrained and free uniaxial stretching induced crystallization of high density polyethylene (HDPE) film were studied with in situ synchrotron radiation small and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SR-SAXS, SR-WAXS). According to the initial structure after stretching, as well as the structural evolution, three characteristic regions can be defined in strain space for both stretching modes, while the strain boundaries between different regions are different for the two stretching modes. Region I is located at low strain levels where completely twisted lamellae are induced. Region II is in an intermediate strain level, which induces the formation of partially twisted lamellae with relatively large lateral size (defined as quasi-micro-fibrils). Region III with large strain produces flat lamellae with small lateral dimensions (micro-fibrils). During the crystallization process, a new type of lamellar stack with smaller long period forms in regions II and III while no new types of lamellae appear in region I for both stretching modes. Along the strain space, the scenario of constrained stretching delays the transition from region I to region II, as well from region II to region III. Also, the draw ratio windows of region I and region II are enlarged by constrained stretching, which is more favorable for film processing.

Abstract:Highly ordered helical syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) crystal mats have been grown from dilute ethylbenzene solution. The morphology of the as-grown mats consists of ribbonlike structures, with the sPS chains oriented perpendicular to the mat surface. The as-grown crystals are complexed structures with an estimated ratio of one ethylbenzene molecule for approximately six sPS chemical repeat units. Upon annealing at 106-degrees-C for 5 h, the solvent is driven from the crystal lattice. While chain orientation and conformation are retained, the ribbonlike morphology is irreversibly disrupted with a shrinking of the b-axis spacing, which is indicative of intermolecular disordering caused by solvent expulsion. Upon annealing at 202-degrees-C, the chain conformation changes irreversibly from TTGG to all-trans. A completely new lamellar morphology is formed with the chain orientation parallel to the mat surface. A complete molecular reordering at the segmental and morphological levels thus occurs during this phase transition which cannot be accounted for by cooperative bond rotation or any other equilibrium mechanism. This observation is consistent with the irreversible nature of the transition and further emphasizes the critical role of solvent in formation of the less favored helical crystal phases associated with syndiotactic polystyrene.

Abstract:Stress-induced crystallization occurs when one uniaxially draws amorphous poly(ethylene-2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate) (PEN) films at a certain temperature, drawing ratio and speed. The rigid amorphous fractions of the PEN samples were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and their oriented amorphous fractions were detected by wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). It has been shown that there is a close correlation between these two amorphous fractions.

Abstract:We have systematically studied the thin film morphologies of asymmetric polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) diblock copolymer subjected to solvent vapors of varying selectivity for the constituent blocks. Upon a short treatment in neutral or PS-selective vapor, the film exhibited a highly ordered array of hexagonally packed, cylindrical microdomains. In the case of PEO selective vapor annealing, such ordered cylindrical microdomains were not obtained. instead, fractal patterns on the microscale were observed and their growth processes investigated. Furthermore, hierarchical structures could be obtained if the fractal pattern was exposed to neutral or PS selective vapor.
