It is now clear that dry forest regeneration relies on a set of regeneration mechanisms such as seed rain, seed and seedling banks, and resprouts that operate simultaneously, but their relative contribution and drivers remain poorly understood. In this paper, we examined the role of seed rain, seed soil bank, seedling, sapling, and resprout assemblages in the regeneration of a Caatinga dry forest in northeast Brazil. We also examined how these regeneration mechanisms respond to chronic disturbances, rainfall, soil fertility, and light in 18 plots located in old-growth forest stands. A total of 5239 seeds from seed rain, 932 seeds in the soil seed bank, 158 seedlings, 85 saplings and 416 resprouts were recorded. Overall regeneration mechanisms provided low-density and impoverished assemblages when examined isolated. Soil seed bank and seed rain provided up to 423 and 35.5 seeds per m 2 , respectively. Seedling and sapling assemblages were dominated by a small set of species (mostly Jatropha mutabilis, Pityrocapa moliliformis , and Trischidium molle ), which were both frequent and accounted for most of the individuals. Resprouting was the most important mechanism, accounting for 63.1% of all individuals in the seedling, sapling, and resprout assemblages. Chronic disturbances were identified as key drivers, negatively affecting several community-level attributes of seed rain, soil seed bank, seedlings, and resprouts. Soil fertility and leaf area index (i.e., light availability) were negatively related to seedling and sapling abundances, respectively. Furthermore, the effect of environmental factors on regeneration was more pronounced in disturbed areas. Species composition of saplings and resprouts were associated with chronic disturbances and environmental factors. Our results suggest that, in human-modified landscapes, Caatinga forest regeneration relies primarily on resprouting, while other mechanisms play a minor role in plant species recruitment and maintenance along gradients of disturbances and environmental factors. Given the predicted increase in aridity associated with increased human disturbance, the Caatinga dry forest may experience shifts in forest structure and regeneration patterns. We refer to an absolute prevalence of vegetative propagation leading to a low-statured forest dominated by multi-stem individuals, with unknown effects on long-term forest dynamics and resilience, including community-level homogenization. Abstract:Arid and semiarid ecosystems display several environmental filters naturally restricting plant community composition. Such filters become more severe after some disturbance and may thus hamper the survival of young plants. The role of remnant trees in succession needs to be better understood to identify patterns and functional traits that might facilitate natural regeneration in drylands. This study evaluated the role of remnant trees in the succession process in the caatinga vegetation (Brazilian seasonally dry tropical forest), testing the effect of a typical tree, the juazeiro ( Ziziphus joazeiro Mart.) in richness and abundance of seedlings in areas of abandoned pasture, in Northeastern Brazil. A perimeter was outlined around each plant (n = 20) with a diameter equivalent to each tree crown; all seedlings of woody species up to 0.5 m in height, within that perimeter, were collected and identified. Control areas with the same dimensions were delimited in adjacent locations (n = 20) without the influence of remnant trees, followed by the same data surveys. Mean species richness was of 7.8 ± 4.8 under the juazeiro canopies, compared to 2.3 ± 1.9 in the control areas. Species abundance was also greater under the presence of Z. joazeiro , with an average of 16.9 ± 4.8, against 4.1 ± 4.2 individuals in the controls. Among the abiotic factors evaluated, it is suggested that soil and air temperatures may show a greater influence on the recruitment of seedlings, benefiting natural regeneration under Z. joazeiro . Z. joazeiro ramnant trees appear to facilitate the natural regeneration of tropical drylands. We suggest considering the use of these plants as catalysts for the nucleation process in the restoration of the caatinga.

Abstract:We aimed to characterize the adult and regenerating tree components and their relationships with soil characteristics of a native vegetation remnant in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The area of the fragment is stratified into "dry area" (lithic neosoil) and "damp area" (gleisoil). We conducted a forest inventory with a random distribution of 25 parcels. We analyzed the physical and chemical components of the soil. We evaluated the vegetation's horizontal structure, diversity, and sample sufficiency using the Bootstrap richness estimator. We classified the species according to dispersal syndrome and ecological group. Overall, we found 93 species in the adult layer and 70 species in the regenerating layer. The similarity dendrograms based on the two evaluated indices demonstrated the existence of the two initially stratified environments in both strata. The IndVal (%) indicated that the set of indicator species differed between the strata. Thereby, the fragment is in an intermediate stage of successional progression. PCA showed that plots in the wet area had higher pH values and Ca, Zn, and Fe levels, while plots in the dry area did not clearly distinguish, varying in terms of K, B, and organic matter content. In CCA, a set of species that occurred exclusively in the damp area showed a strong relationship with the analyzed variables. The area is a diverse ecosystem that efficiently provides ecosystem services to society and should be the subject of long-term conservation and research.

Abstract:Pastures occupy approximately 20% of the Brazilian territory and a significant part of these areas are degraded and have legal environmental liabilities. Ecological restoration is necessary to remedy this liability. The objective of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of a forest restoration planting in an area previously used as buffalo pasture, through floristic and phytosociological parameters of natural regeneration. The study area was densely populated by invasive exotic grasses (Urochloa spp.) until 2006, when, after eliminating the grasses, six native tree species were planted at 2.5 × 1.6 m spacing. A total of 73 terrestrial plant species were found, the most important being Alchornea glandulosa Poepp. & Endl. - heliophilous, which showed high abundance in all strata. The restoration methodology employed was effective in triggering natural succession in the study area, resulting, after 12 years, in floristic and structural parameters consistent with the initial stage of development of the alluvial Dense Ombrophylous Forest. It is inferred that the well-preserved landscape in the region has been determinant in providing the propagules and dispersers that made the observed species richness possible, while the planting tends to have contributed with the control of grasses and with the recovery of the forest environment, facilitating the arrival and development of these propagules. Evidence of soil degradation by use as pasture was observed, and in former buffalo bathing areas neither restoration planting nor natural regeneration developed.

Abstract:The Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests (SDTF), distributed from Mexico to northern Argentina, are habitat to a unique biodiversity. Among these forests, the Caatinga stands out, occupying a large part of the Brazilian Northeast and is subject to cycles of anthropic disturbance and abandonment of exploited areas. Understanding how microbial communities respond to environmental changes is crucial, especially considering the various ecosystem services provided by microorganisms. Among soil microorganisms, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a significant role in the maintenance of terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the structure, composition, and distribution of AMF assemblages, as well as their main drivers, in regeneration areas of the Caatinga. Soil samples were collected in the Catimbau National Park (Pernambuco State), including an old-growth forest representing undisturbed areas, and in early, intermediate, and late regeneration areas. The composition of AMF assemblages differed among regenerating areas and old-growth forest, but their distribution is not related and conditioned to plant assemblages. Instead, soil properties and rainfall are the main factors structuring these assemblages in SDTF. A total of 83 taxa of AMF were identified. Glomus and Acaulospora , which exhibit respectively ruderal and stress-tolerant life strategies were the most abundant genera. The highest number of unique AMF species was recorded in the old-growth forest, contrasting with the late regeneration areas which had the lowest number. The results showed that deterministic processes (soil and rainfall) are structuring the AMF assemblages in areas under regeneration process in SDTF. Plants and AMF do not recover simultaneously over the evaluated regeneration times.

Abstract:The conversion of caatinga vegetation areas into pastures in the Brazilian semiarid region has depleted soil fertility due to degradation. The natural regeneration of the caatinga has been the alternative adopted to restore soil fertility. However, the real effectiveness of this practice in recovering organic carbon (SOC) and nutrient stocks is unknown. This work evaluated the effect of natural regeneration of the caatinga vegetation on the restoration of levels and stocks of SOC, N, and P as a strategy to maintain the sustainability of the environment. We collected soil samples every 5 cm, up to 20 cm deep, in areas of degraded pasture, caatinga in regeneration (10 years), and regenerated caatinga (35 years) to evaluate the levels and stocks of SOC, N, and P. The depth significantly affects the levels and stocks of SOC, N, and P. Stocks and levels of SOC, N, and P were higher in regenerated caatinga > regenerating caatinga > degraded pasture. The regenerated caatinga increased SOC, N, and P stocks by 115%, 110%, and 117%, respectively, compared to the degraded pasture. Although 35 years of regeneration of the caatinga has improved soil fertility, the levels and stocks of SOC, N, and P remain low.

Abstract:Previous studies have demonstrated that the tree community of small and isolated forest fragments show persisting structural and functional attributes characteristic of early-successional systems. Yet, the impacts of forest small size and isolation on several tree community attributes have not been comprehensively quantified in long-term studies. Here we analysed permanent plots over 17 years to investigate the recovery of community attributes in a small tropical forest remnant surrounded by human-modified landscapes in the endangered Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We conducted analyses on community species richness, functional diversity and composition, and aboveground biomass for the overall, adult and juvenile communities. The analysis of the demographic rates indicates a self-thinning phase (reduction in stem density and increase in basal area) characteristic of late-succession stages. In general, we found a reduction in the proportion of simple leaves along with a gradual increase in wood density mostly for the adult tree community and a significant increase in aboveground biomass throughout the years. Despite its reduced size, the fragment studied does not show clear trends of altered forest structure and functional composition dynamics through time. Yet, it holds aboveground biomass values comparable to large undisturbed rainforests, thus indicating that the ecological value of small forest fragments should not be neglected.

Abstract:Restoring the ecosystems of the Cerrado biome is challenging considering the diversity of phytophysiognomies present in the biome, some of which are composed of species from different strata (herbaceous, shrubby, and arboreal), which increases the complexity of restructuring the floristic composition. Other factors was involved, such as soil quality, which directly influences the success of restoration, water storage, and nutrients, the financial costs, and a slow ecological process, due to the adverse circumstances found in the area. be restored. The strong anthropogenic interventions by mining processes reduce dramatically the physical and nutritional composition of the soil. We studied two restoration areas in Paracatu, Brazil, to examine their edaphic conditions six years after mining activities ceased and relate them to the status of the restoration process. In 2009, a Cerrado restoration were established in an area previously explored for gravel extraction. Plants were sampled and identified in 11 transects along the planting lines. The diameter base (DB) and total height (HT) were measured. The physical/chemical quality of the soil substrate was determined using a collection of samples in open trenches at four types of points: Cerrado (TC); dead plant pits (TM); seedling pits having living individuals of the most abundant species (TT); and those of the second-most abundant species (TE). Cecropia pachystachya Trécul and Tapirira guianensis Aubl. were most abundant and demonstrated the potential to thrive in areas degraded by mining having low mortality rates and growth at relatively DB and HT. The physical quality indicators in the gravel pits were not limiting, indicating that substrate preparation was efficient in this regard. The organic matter content in TM, TT, and TE was low in comparison to that of TC, and the chemical conditions in the TE pit substrates were similar to those in TM pits, suggesting C . pachystachya is a species with good plasticity, whereas T . guianensis is present in pits with higher levels of phosphorus.

Influence of Removal of a Non-native Tree Species Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth. on the Regenerating Plant Communities in a Tropical Semideciduous Forest Under Restoration in Brazil

Abstract:Exotic species are used to trigger facilitation in restoration plantings, but this positive effect may not be permanent and these species may have negative effects later on. Since such species can provide a marketable product (firewood), their harvest may represent an advantageous strategy to achieve both ecological and economic benefits. In this study, we looked at the effect of removal of a non-native tree species (Mimosa caesalpiniifolia) on the understory of a semideciduous forest undergoing restoration. We assessed two 14-year-old plantation systems (modified "taungya" agroforestry system; and mixed plantation using commercial timber and firewood tree species) established at two sites with contrasting soil properties in São Paulo state, Brazil. The experimental design included randomized blocks with split plots. The natural regeneration of woody species (height ≥0.2 m) was compared between managed (all M. caesalpiniifolia trees removed) and unmanaged plots during the first year after the intervention. The removal of M. caesalpiniifolia increased species diversity but decreased stand basal area. Nevertheless, the basal area loss was recovered after 1 year. The management treatment affected tree species regeneration differently between species groups. The results of this study suggest that removal of M. caesalpiniifolia benefited the understory and possibly accelerated the succession process. Further monitoring studies are needed to evaluate the longer term effects on stand structure and composition. The lack of negative effects of tree removal on the natural regeneration indicates that such interventions can be recommended, especially considering the expectations of economic revenues from tree harvesting in restoration plantings.
Flooding drives tropical dry forest tree community assembly in Southeast Brazil

Abstract:In this study, we characterized and compared vegetation types associated with geomorphological units susceptible to distinct flooding levels. Differences in vegetation are related to landform variations. We aimed to 1) characterize the vegetation structure and quantify community compositional differences among landforms and 2) compare landforms soil characteristics and how these correlate with the tree vegetation. The study area is located in the Brazilian Caatinga domain, near the Verde Grande river, a tributary of São Francisco river (14°54′38ʺS, 43°42′53ʺW). We allocated six plots in each of the five landforms sampled (from wettest to driest sites): 1) marginal dike (RF – riparian forest), 2) upper terrace (RWF – riparian wetland forest), 3) lower terrace (WF – wetland forest), 4) lower plain (OFF – occasionally flooded forest) and 5) upper plain (UF – unflooded forest). We ran a non‐metric multidimensional scaling, produced a Venn diagram, and performed a principal component analysis (PCA) on the soil data (compared through a Tukey test at 5% significance after a significant ANOVA). A total of 1422 individuals, 26 families, 70 genera and 89 species were recorded. The NMDS revealed two distinct floristic groups: one group is associated with landforms with assumed higher flood frequency (RF, RWF, WF) and one with less frequently flooded landforms (OFF and UF). The RF, OFF, and UF landforms contained exclusive species (that only occurred in the plots of a particular landform). The species Geofroea spinosa (Fabaceae) was responsible for 70% of the total biomass recorded in the landforms RWF and WF. The soil analysis showed a gradient of soil acidity and fertility related to water saturation, whereby the most frequently flooded plots had the highest acidity values and highest fertility. We found that flood‐related conditions significantly influence tree community structure and species distribution in this floodplain in the Brazilian Caatinga domain.

Abstract:Biomass is an important indicator of the ability of tropical forests to deliver ecosystem services, but little attention has been given to belowground biomass and its drivers in human-modified landscapes. Here, we investigated the belowground biomass and nutrient concentration/stocks (C, P, and N) across regenerating forest stands with varying ages (10-76 years old) and old-growth forests in the Caatinga dry forest (northeastern Brazil) in the context of slash-and-burn agriculture. Belowground biomass ranged from 1.89 ± 0.33 Mg ha-1 to 17.53 ± 2.28 Mg ha-1 (mean ± SE) across regenerating forest stands and averaged 8.33 ± 1.59 Mg ha-1, with no differences compared to old-growth stands. However, regenerating stands exhibited a higher root/shoot ratio with biomass concentrated in the superficial soil layer and in large-sized roots, regardless of the successional stage. Root nutrient concentration and stocks were highly variable across forest stands with fine roots supporting a higher concentration of N and P, while regenerating stands supported lower nutrient stocks as compared to old-growth forests. Finally, precipitation and chronic disturbance emerged as the most important drivers of belowground biomass and nutrient concentrations/stocks, while aboveground biomass played a negligible role. Our results indicate that, in human-modified landscapes of tropical dry forests, belowground biomass and nutrients play important roles in ecosystem functions in regenerated forests after slash-and-burn agriculture. Forest resilience and provision of ecosystem services (e.g., nutrient cycling) appear to be very sensitive to increased aridity and exploitation of forest resources.
Survival, seedlings growth and natural regeneration in areas under ecological restoration in a sandy coastal plain (restinga) of southeastern Brazil

Abstract:Restinga is an ecosystem associated mainly with the Atlantic Forest that can be defined as vegetation of the coastal plain established on sandy soil. This study was carried out in degraded areas of restinga in a Conservation Unit in São João da Barra, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2012, a restoration project was initiated in the area, with implementation of plantings in hexagonal rings and artificial perches. Seedlings were planted in two contrasting situations: sandbanks (dry areas) and depression zones (areas prone to seasonal flooding). The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of seedlings planted in both areas and accompany natural regeneration. We hypothesised that species planted and recruited in depressions should have better survival rates and increments in height (H) and diameter at the ground level (DGL) than the ones planted in sandbanks. Monitoring of planted seedlings was carried out in November 2016. Both communities had similar mortality (c. 50%). Greater increments in H were found for Inga laurina and Schinus terebinthifolia in depressions. Higher increments in DGL were observed especially for I. laurina, Inga vera and S. terebinthifolia with good performance in both areas. In general, seedlings planted in depressions showed greater performances, which can be related to higher water and nutrient availability. The most abundant natural regenerant species were Scoparia dulcis in sandbanks and S. terebinthifolia in depressions. A high number of regenerants was found associated with artificial perches, especially Cynophalla flexuosa, which demonstrates that the technique facilitated regeneration in the area.

Abstract:Inside the Brazilian semiarid region (Caatinga Dominion), there are enclaves of vegetation from another bioma (Cerrado) that appear as scattered patches, mainly present on the tops of plateaus and in areas locally called "tabuleiros". Aiming for a better understanding of the floristic composition to support conservation strategies, a survey of the vascular flora and an analysis of the biological spectrum were conducted in the Serra do Boqueirão (southern state of Ceará, Brazilian Northeastern), an area of significant ecological and regional landscape value. Monthly botanical collections were carried out over 23 months in two distinct areas (with and without rocky outcrops – PAR and AAR), and soil samples were also collected for analysis. Species were classified in the Raunkiaer's life forms, modified according to Braun-Blanquet. The chi-square test and a detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) were performed to compare the areas, along with a similarity test to observe comparisons with other savanna areas in the Caatinga and core areas in Brazil. One hundred and seven species were identified in 92 genera and 40 families. Fabaceae (24 spp.), Malvaceae (8 spp.), and Rubiaceae (6 spp.) were the richest families. The biological spectrum showed a predominance of phanerophytes (52.3 %) and therophytes (25.2 %), forms characteristic of the tree-shrub physiognomy with annual herbs. Statistical analysis indicated that the biological spectrum differs from Raunkiaer's normal, as well as the two areas differ from each other (χ2 = 25.87, p < 0.0001). A high concentration of aluminum was observed in the area with the presence of species characteristic of the Cerrado s.s. such as Curatella americana and Qualea parviflora , and the similarity test indicated greater resemblance to Caatinga areas geographically closer to the study area. These results highlight the presence of a savanna vegetation enclave with a strong penetration of surrounding Caatinga species, emphasizing the role of historical and environmental factors of the vegetation in the area and indicating the need for conservation strategies.

Abstract:http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/1980509821100Esse estudo avaliou comparativamente os parâmetros fitossociológicos da regeneração natural e da vegetação arbórea em dois manguezais distintos no Estado do Paraná, um pertencente à Baía de Paranaguá (manguezal de Antonina) e outro à Baía de Guaratuba (manguezal de Guaratuba). Em cada área, três subáreas foram marcadas e amostradas cinco parcelas de 10 x 10 m para avaliação do componente arbóreo e quinze subparcelas de 1 x 1 m para avaliação da regeneração natural. Avicennia schaueriana, Rhizophora mangle e Laguncularia racemosa exibiram domínio e densidade relativa distintos entre as áreas. Manguezais de Antonina e Guaratuba diferiram tanto na estrutura da regeneração natural como no componente arbóreo. A Análise de Coordenadas Principais (PCoA) mostrou que as diferenças entre as áreas em relação às variáveis abióticas do solo estão fortemente relacionadas com os parâmetros estruturais do componente arbóreo dos manguezais. Os fatores edáficos dos manguezais têm grande importância na separação entre as áreas, já que reflete na capacidade de adaptação das plantas.

Abstract:The Caatinga biome has been severely devastated over the years due to the replacement of native dry forests with grassland areas in the Brazilian semiarid region. Despite this, variations in key soil quality indicators still need to be fully elucidated. We evaluated soil and root respiration dynamics in grassland (GR), agroforestry (AS), and Caatinga forest (CA) areas, during dry and rainy seasons. In situ, monthly CO2 flux (total, root, and heterotrophic respirations), soil moisture (θv), and temperature (Tsoil) were measured. Soil samples were collected every 5 cm layer up to 20 cm depth to analyze total organic carbon (TOC) and microbial activities. The highest parameter values occurred during the rainy season. Total soil respiration was highest in AS, followed by CA and then GR, with 19.3, 13.4, and 8.4 ton C ha−1 yr−1, respectively, and root respiration contributed 33.2 and 32.9% to total soil respiration in CA and AS, respectively. However, TOC concentrations and microbial activity were significantly higher in AS than in GR and similar to CA, more than compensating the C losses by respiration. Therefore, agroforestry systems have a high potential for semiarid lands because they preserve soil carbon and microbial activity comparable to Caatinga forests.

Abstract:The soil seed bank is an important natural regeneration strategy for plant communities and can determine floristic composition after disturbances. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the seed bank richness and abundance at different soil depths and under different light conditions in a dry forest. Litter and soil samples were collected at depths of 0-5 and 5-10 cm and submitted to two light conditions (light and shady). In total, 1,725 individuals from 85 species and 19 families emerged. Significant differences in richness between soil depths were observed, being greater at 0-5 cm, while abundance was similar. There were no variations in richness or abundance of germinated seeds between light conditions. Malvaceae and Verbenaceae families were the most representative in this study.
Biomass and carbon balance in a dry tropical forest area in northeast Brazil

Abstract:Forest ecosystems play an important role in mitigating the concentration increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere through carbon sequestration by plants and its storage in biomass and soil. The objective was to determine the aerial biomass carbon stock in a dry tropical forest in Brazil. It was developed between 2012 to 2015, in an area with an advanced regeneration stage (50 years) in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco and it was used 40 permanent plots (400 m²) distant 80 m apart, with 50 m from the border, totaling 1.6 ha of the area to sample the shrubby-arboreal component, where all individuals with circumference at breast height (1.30 m of the soil) equal or greater than 6 cm were identified, measured and labeled in 2012 and remeasured in 2015. It was calculated the biomass and carbon stocks through developed equations available in the literature. The results showed that the total biomass and carbon stock in the first year was 27.97 e 12.92 Mg.ha-1 while in 2015 it was 18.49 and 8.39 Mg.ha-1 respectively. The results showed a biomass and carbon stock reduction of more than 30% in the period evaluated, even this, the area manages to present values within the expected pattern for the region, assuring the importance of sustainable forest management of these native/natural vegetation areas.

Abstract:O presente trabalho teve por objetivo caracterizar a regeneração natural, pela análise fitossociológica, em Floresta Ombrófila Mista na Floresta Nacional de São Francisco de Paula (entre 29°23' e 29°27' S e 50°23' e 50°25' W), para fornecer subsídios à recuperação e conservação desses ecossistemas, e descrever as possibilidades de utilização futura da regeneração natural. Foram amostradas 180 subunidades de 100 m2 (10 x 10 m) nas quais foram medidas a altura total (h) dos indivíduos com h  1,30 m, com circunferência mínima de 3,0 cm, até o máximo de 30,0 cm. A densidade total foi de 7.984 indivíduos/ha, pertencentes a 109 espécies, 88 gêneros e 46 famílias botânicas, além de indivíduos mortos, cipós e espécies não identificadas, com índice de diversidade de Shannon-Weaver (H') de 2,22. As espécies mais importantes foram Casearia decandra, Stillingia oppositifolia e Sebastiania brasiliensis. A Araucaria angustifolia apesar de ser a espécie fisionomicamente mais destacada e de maior interesse econômico da Floresta Ombrófila Mista apresentou valores baixos em todos os parâmetros avaliados, necessitando a implementação de tratamentos silviculturais e plantios de enriquecimento que beneficiem a sua regeneração.

Abstract:Defining the reference system for restoration projects in regions characterized by complex vegetation mosaics is challenging. Misidentification of anthropogenically‐degraded grasslands or savannas as natural vegetation can lead to inappropriate restoration efforts and legislation. Here we use the Cerrado region of Brazil as an example of the importance of clearly defining multiple natural and anthropogenically‐altered states in grassland‐savanna‐forest mosaics to set appropriate restoration targets and select cost‐effective restoration methods. We contend that the differences in Cerrado vegetation composition originally were driven by soil conditions and secondarily by fire frequency and precipitation patterns that differ across the region. Grasslands are found on the shallowest, least fertile soils and/or in waterlogged soils; scleromorphic forest (cerradão) are generally found on deeper, more fertile soils; and savannas occupy an intermediate position. This biophysical template has been overlain by a range of human land use intensities that strongly affect resilience. We define three main, natural vegetation types – grassland, savanna, and scleromorphic forest ‐ to (1) distinguish between original and degraded states and (2) set appropriate targets for and guide restoration. For example, areas that were originally scleromorphic forest are likely to regenerate naturally following low or medium intensity land use due extensive resprouting of woody plants, whereas grassland restoration requires reintroduction of grass and forb species that do not tolerate soil disturbance and exotic grass competition. Planting trees into historic grasslands results in inappropriate restoration targets and often restoration failure. Abstract:Research related to Cerradão vegetation focuses more on the floristic-structural aspect, with rare studies on the quantification of volume and biomass stocks, and even fewer investigating the increments of these attributes. Using a systematic sampling method with subdivided strips and 400 m2 plots, the density found was 1135, 1165, and 1229 trees/ha in 2012, 2020, and 2023, respectively, in Lajeado State Park, Tocantins State, Brazil. Volume was estimated using the equation v=0.000085D2.122270H0.666217, and biomass was estimated using the equation AGB=0.0673ρD2H0.976. Vegetation dynamics were assessed using growth increment, recruitment, mortality, turnover rate, and time. The results indicated that dynamics have increased since the start of monitoring. Typical Cerrado species, in the strict sense, were replaced by those from forest environments. The total production in volume and biomass was 160.91 m3/ha and 118.10 Mg/ha, respectively, in 2023. The species of Emmotum nitens, Mezilaurus itauba, Ocotea canaliculata, and Sacoglottis guianensis showed the highest increment values in volume and biomass. For the community, the average values were 4.04 m3/ha/year and 3.54 Mg/ha/year. The community has not yet reached its carrying capacity and stores a significant amount of biomass. This is influenced by the transition of the study area from an exploited environment to a conservation unit (park) and by its location in a transitional area with the Amazon biome.
