Abstract:The first few months of life is the most vulnerable period for fish and their optimal hatching time with zooplankton prey is favored by natural selection. Traditionally, however, prey abundance (i.e., zooplankton density) has been considered important, whereas prey nutritional composition has been largely neglected in natural settings. High-quality zooplankton, rich in both essential amino acids (EAAs) and fatty acids (FAs), are required as starting prey to initiate development and fast juvenile growth. Prey quality is dependent on environmental conditions, and, for example, eutrophication and browning are two major factors defining primary producer community structures that will directly determine the nutritional quality of the basal food sources (algae, bacteria, terrestrial matter) for zooplankton. We experimentally tested how eutrophication and browning affect the growth and survival of juvenile rainbow trout (<i>Oncorhynchus mykiss</i>) by changing the quality of basal resources. We fed the fish on herbivorous zooplankton (<i>Daphnia</i>) grown with foods of different nutritional quality (algae, bacteria, terrestrial matter), and used GC-MS, stable isotope labeling as well as bulk and compound-specific stable isotope analyses for detecting the effects of different diets on the nutritional status of fish. The content of EAAs and omega-3 (ω-3) polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) in basal foods and zooplankton decreased in both eutrophication and browning treatments. The decrease in ω-3 PUFA and especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was reflected to fish juveniles, but they were able to compensate for low availability of EAAs in their food. Therefore, the reduced growth and survival of the juvenile fish was linked to the low availability of DHA. Fish showed very low ability to convert alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) to DHA. We conclude that eutrophication and browning decrease the availability of the originally phytoplankton-derived DHA for zooplankton and juvenile fish, suggesting bottom-up regulation of food web quality.

Abstract:The present study describes the responses of summer phytoplankton biomass to changes in top-down forcing (expressed as zooplankton mortality) in three ecosystems (the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Nordic Seas) across different 3D ecosystem models. In each of the model set-ups, we applied the same changes in the magnitude of mortality ( +/- 20%) of the highest trophic zooplankton level (Z1). Model results showed overall dampened responses of phytoplankton relative to Z1 biomass. Phytoplankton responses varied depending on the food web structure and trophic coupling represented in the models. Hence, a priori model assumptions were found to influence cascades and pathways in model estimates and, thus, become highly relevant when examining ecosystem pressures such as fishing and climate change. Especially, the different roles and parameterizations of additional zooplankton groups grazed by Z1, and their importance for the outcome, emphasized the need for better calibration data. Spatial variability was high within each model indicating that physics (hydrodynamics and temperature) and nutrient dynamics also play vital roles for ecosystem responses to top-down effects. In conclusion, the model comparison indicated that changes in top-down forcing in combination with the modelled food-web structure affect summer phytoplankton biomass and, thereby, indirectly influence water quality of the systems.
Grazing resistance and poor food quality of a widespread mixotroph impair zooplankton secondary production

Abstract:Abstract Growing evidence suggests that global climate change promotes the dominance of mixotrophic algae especially in oligotrophic aquatic ecosystems. While theory predicts that mixotrophy increases trophic transfer efficiency in aquatic food webs, deleterious effects of some mixotrophs on consumers have also been reported. Here, using a widespread mixotrophic algal genus Dinobryon , we aimed to quantify how colonial taxa contribute to secondary production in lakes. We, therefore, studied the dietary effects of Dinobryon divergens on Cladocera ( Daphnia longispina ) and Copepoda ( Eudiaptomus gracilis ), representing two main taxonomic and functional groups of zooplankton. In feeding experiments, we showed that Dinobryon was largely grazing resistant and even inhibited the uptake of the high-quality reference food in Daphnia. Eudiaptomus could to some extent compensate with selective feeding, but a negative long-term food quality effect was also evident. Besides, Eudiaptomus was more sensitive to the pure diet of Dinobryon than Daphnia . Low lipid content and high C:P elemental ratio further supported the low nutritional value of the mixotroph. In a stable isotope approach analysing a natural plankton community, we found further evidence that carbon of Dinobryon was not conveyed efficiently to zooplankton. Our results show that the increasing dominance of colonial mixotrophs can result in reduced dietary energy transfer to consumers at higher trophic levels. In a wider perspective, global climate change favours the dominance of some detrimental mixotrophic algae which may constrain pelagic trophic transfer efficiency in oligotrophic systems, similarly to cyanobacteria in eutrophic lakes.

Abstract:Zooplankton are the primary energy pathway from phytoplankton to fish. Yet, there is limited understanding about how climate change will modify zooplankton communities and the implications for marine food webs globally. Using a trait-based marine ecosystem model resolving key zooplankton groups, we find that future oceans, particularly in tropical regions, favour food webs increasingly dominated by carnivorous (chaetognaths, jellyfish and carnivorous copepods) and gelatinous filter-feeding zooplankton (larvaceans and salps) at the expense of omnivorous copepods and euphausiids. By providing a direct energetic pathway from small phytoplankton to fish, the rise of gelatinous filter feeders partially offsets the increase in trophic steps between primary producers and fish from declining phytoplankton biomass and increases in carnivorous zooplankton. However, future fish communities experience reduced carrying capacity from falling phytoplankton biomass and less nutritious food as environmental conditions increasingly favour gelatinous zooplankton, slightly exacerbating projected declines in small pelagic fish biomass in tropical regions by 2100.

Abstract:Abstract Food quality is one of the key factors influencing zooplankton population dynamics. Eutrophication drives phytoplankton communities toward the dominance of cyanobacteria, which means a decrease in the availability of sterols and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (EPA and DHA). The effects of different restoration measures on the nutritional quality of the phytoplankton community and subsequent impacts on zooplankton biomass have rarely been considered. We analyzed the nutritional quality of phytoplankton in the eutrophic Lake Vesijärvi in southern Finland over a 37-year period, and studied the impacts of two restoration measures, biomanipulation and hypolimnetic aeration, on the abundance of high-quality phytoplankton. We found that biomanipulation had a positive impact on the abundance of taxa synthesizing sterols, EPA, and DHA and, concurrently, on the biomass of the keystone species Daphnia . In contrast, hypolimnetic aeration did not result in such a beneficial outcome, manifested as a decrease in the abundance of Daphnia and frequent phytoplankton blooms dominated by cyanobacteria suggesting reduction in the nutritional quality of food for Daphnia . Our analysis shows that the determination of the nutritional value of algae and the contribution of essential fatty acids and sterols is an effective method to evaluate the success of various restoration measures.

Lowered nutritional quality of plankton caused by global environmental changes

Abstract:Global environmental changes are causing widespread nutrient depletion, declines in the ratio of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (N) to total phosphorus (DIN:TP), and increases in both water temperature and terrestrial colored dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration (browning) in high-latitude northern lakes. Declining lake DIN:TP, warming, and browning alter the nutrient limitation regime and biomass of phytoplankton, but how these stressors together affect the nutritional quality in terms of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) contents of the pelagic food web components remains unknown. We assessed the fatty acid compositions of seston and zooplankton in 33 lakes across south-to-north and boreal-to-subarctic gradients in Sweden. Data showed higher lake DIN:TP in the south than in the north, and that boreal lakes were warmer and browner than subarctic lakes. Lake DIN:TP strongly affected the PUFA contents-especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-in seston, calanoids, and copepods (as a group), but not in cladocerans. The EPA+DHA contents increased by 123% in seston, 197% in calanoids, and 230% in copepods across a lake molar DIN:TP gradient from 0.17 to 14.53, indicating lower seston and copepod nutritional quality in the more N-limited lakes (those with lower DIN:TP). Water temperature affected EPA+DHA contents of zooplankton, especially cladocerans, but not seston. Cladoceran EPA+DHA contents were reduced by ca. 6% for every 1°C increase in surface water. Also, the EPA, DHA, or EPA+DHA contents of Bosmina, cyclopoids, and copepods increased in lakes with higher DOC concentrations or aromaticity. Our findings indicate that zooplankton food quality for higher consumers will decrease with warming alone (for cladocerans) or in combination with declining lake DIN:TP (for copepods), but impacts of these stressors are moderated by lake browning. Global environmental changes that drive northern lakes toward more N-limited, warmer, and browner conditions will reduce PUFA availability and nutritional quality of the pelagic food web components.

Abstract:Traditionally, trophic ecology research on aquatic ecosystems has focused more on the quantity of dietary energy flow within food webs rather than food quality and its effects on organisms at various trophic levels. Recent studies emphasize that food quality is central to consumer growth and reproduction, and the importance of food quality for aquatic ecosystems has become increasingly well recognized. It is timely to synthesise these findings and identify potential future research directions. We conducted a systematic review of omega‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3‐PUFAs) as a crucial component of high‐quality food sources in freshwater ecosystems to evaluate their impact on a variety of consumers, and explore the effects of global change on these high‐quality food sources and their transfer to higher trophic consumers within and across ecosystems. In freshwater ecosystems, algae rich in ω3 long‐chain PUFAs, such as diatoms, dinoflagellates and cryptophytes, represent important high‐quality food sources for consumers, whereas cyanobacteria, green algae, terrestrial vascular plants and macrophytes low in ω3 long‐chain PUFAs are low‐quality food sources. High‐quality ω3‐PUFA‐containing food sources usually lead to increased growth and reproduction of aquatic consumers, e.g. benthic invertebrates, zooplankton and fish, and also provide ω3 long‐chain PUFAs to riparian terrestrial consumers via emergent aquatic insects. Consumers feeding on high‐quality ω3‐PUFA‐containing foods in turn represent high‐quality food for their own predators. However, the ω3‐PUFA content of food sources is sensitive to global environmental changes. Warming, eutrophication, increased light intensity (e.g. from loss of riparian shading), and pollutants potentially inhibit the synthesis of algal ω3‐PUFAs while at the same time promoting the growth of lower‐quality foods, such as cyanobacteria and green algae. These factors combined could lead to a significant reduction in the availability of ω3‐PUFAs for consumers and constrain their overall fitness. Although the effect of individual environmental factors on high‐quality ω3‐PUFA‐containing food sources has been investigated, multiple environmental factors (e.g. climate change, human activities, pollution) will act in combination and any synergistic effects on aquatic food webs remain unclear. Identifying the sources and fate of ω3‐PUFAs within and across ecosystems could represent an important approach to understand the impact of multiple environmental factors on trophic relationships and the implications for populations of freshwater and riparian consumers. Maintaining the availability of high‐quality ω3‐PUFA‐containing food sources may also be key to mitigating freshwater biodiversity loss due to global change.

Abstract:Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3-PUFA) are central to the growth and reproduction of aquatic consumers. Dissolved nutrients in aquatic ecosystems strongly affect algal taxonomic composition and thus the production and transfer of specific ω3-PUFA to consumers at higher trophic levels. However, most studies were conducted in nutrient-poor, oligotrophic lakes, leading to an insufficient understanding of how water nutrients affect algal ω3-PUFA and their trophic transfer in consumers in highly eutrophic lakes. We conducted a field investigation in a highly eutrophic lake and collected basal food sources (phytoplankton, periphyton and macrophytes) and aquatic consumers (invertebrates, zooplankton and fish), and measured their fatty acid (FA) composition. Our results showed that periphyton and phytoplankton were both important sources of ω3-PUFA supporting the highly eutrophic lake food web. High water nutrient levels led to low ω3-PUFA levels in phytoplankton and periphyton, resulting in decreased nutritional quality. Consequently, ω3-PUFA of invertebrates and zooplankton reflected variations in ω3-PUFA of phytoplankton and periphyton, respectively. The ω3-PUFA levels of fish decreased as phytoplankton and periphyton ω3-PUFA decreased. Among fish, the Redfin Culter (Cultrichthys erythropterus) and Bar Cheek Goby (Rhinogobius giurinus) exhibited significantly higher levels of EPA and DHA compared to the Pond Loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus), which may have been caused by their different feeding modes. Decreases in the ω3-PUFA levels of basal food sources may be one of the causes leading to the reduction of trophic links in aquatic food webs. Our study elucidated the sources and fate of ω3-PUFA in highly eutrophic lakes, complemented previous studies in oligo- and mesotrophic lakes, and emphasized the role of high-quality food sources. Our results offer new perspectives for the conservation and management of highly eutrophic lake ecosystems.

Abstract:Ecological stoichiometry of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) has been well studied as a driver of zooplankton dynamics in lakes; yet, we still lack a thorough investigation of the impact of varying N loads, and the resulting variation in resource N:P stoichiometry. We used a mesocosm experiment in which we altered inputs of N and P to observe the impact of stoichiometric variation in nutrient concentrations on zooplankton density and community composition for a period of 10 weeks. Our experiment achieved a wide gradient of environmental N:P availability primarily by altering N loading, while keeping P inputs consistent across treatments. Across all treatments, we observed declines in zooplankton density through time and a reduction in cladocerans relative to copepods. These temporal patterns correlated to a loss of P in the water column and higher food resource N:P, as well as warming temperatures throughout the experiment. Our experiment highlights the potential importance of resource quality over quantity for supporting higher zooplankton densities, as well as the impacts of high temperatures. These results suggest disproportionately high N loads relative to P as is common in agricultural landscapes could reduce zooplankton populations, despite stimulating greater primary production.

Abstract:Many primary consumers in freshwater, marine and terrestrial systems are ectotherms (e.g. zooplankton and insects), whose metabolisms, and therefore nutritional demands, are modulated by temperature. Further, nutrient availability largely influences the quality of resources consumed by these organisms, and hence affects whether nutritional demands of consumers are fulfilled. From these considerations, a crucial question arises: how do temperature and nutrient availability together modulate trophodynamics at the basis of food webs? Addressing this question for zooplankton and insects is essential since these consumers are the most abundant metazoans on Earth, and they link primary production to higher trophic levels. Here, we synthesize the existing literature and offer avenues to guide future scientific endeavours. We highlight that the vast majority of studies on the combined influence of temperature and nutrient availability published to date focus on at least one of the following research topics: 1) metabolic requirements of ectotherms; 2) feeding behaviour; 3) eco‐evolutionary processes; and 4) trophodynamics. We pose that further advances in this field of research may provide a robust understanding of how modulations of consumer metabolic requirements and resource quality define consumer–producer interactions across marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. This research effort would enable to combine the fields of Ecological stoichiometry and of Metabolic theory of ecology, and create an integrated approach, which we propose to call Nutritional thermal ecology.

The feeding habits of small-bodied fishes mediate the strength of top-down effects on plankton and water quality in shallow subtropical lakes

Abstract:The proliferation of small-bodied fishes in lakes is often accompanied by deterioration of water quality and ecosystem function. However, the potential impacts of different types of small-bodied fish species (e.g., obligate zooplanktivores and omnivores) on subtropical lake ecosystems in particular have been overlooked mainly due to their small size, shorter life spans and lower economic value. Therefore, we conducted a mesocosm experiment to elucidate how plankton communities and water quality respond to different types of small-bodied fishes, including a common zooplanktivorous fish (thin sharpbelly Toxabramis swinhonis) and other small-bodied omnivorous fishes (bitterling Acheilognathus macropterus, crucian carp Carassius auratus and sharpbelly Hemiculter leucisculus). During the experiment, the mean weekly total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chemical oxygen demand (CODMn), turbidity, chlorophyll-a (Chl.α) and trophic level index (TLI) values were generally higher in treatments where fish were present compared to treatments where fish were absent, but responses varied. At the end of the experiment, phytoplankton abundance and biomass and the relative abundance and biomass of cyanophyta were higher while the abundance and biomass of large-bodied zooplankton were lower in the fish-present treatments. Moreover, the mean weekly TP, CODMn, Chl.α and TLI values were generally higher in treatments with the obligate zooplanktivore, thin sharpbelly, when compared to treatments with omnivorous fishes. Also, the ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass was the lowest, and the ratio of Chl.α to TP was the highest in treatments with thin sharpbelly. Collectively, these general findings indicate that an overabundance of small-bodied fishes can have adverse effects on water quality and plankton communities and that small-bodied zooplanktivorous fishes likely induce stronger top-down effects on plankton and water quality than omnivorous fishes. Our results emphasise that small-bodied fishes should be monitored and controlled if overabundant when managing or restoring shallow subtropical lakes. From the perspective of environmental protection, the combined stocking of different piscivorous fish species that feed in different habitat types could be a way forward to control small-bodied fishes with different feeding habits, but more research is needed to assess the feasibility of this approach.
Does nutrient enrichment alleviate stoichiometric constraint on plankton trophic structure?

Abstract:Stoichiometric mismatch between phytoplankton and zooplankton has implication for trophic transfer efficiency. Phosphorus (P) enrichment is expected to lower phytoplankton carbon (C) to P ratio (C : P) and thereby either alleviate P deficiency or induce excess P for zooplankton. However, the generality of zooplankton facing excess P and its effect on plankton trophic structure in natural systems are poorly understood. We analyzed the stoichiometry of seston and zooplankton, and plankton trophic structure in 32 (sub)tropical Chinese reservoirs. Our results showed that (1) stoichiometric mismatch between seston and zooplankton involved P or/and nitrogen (N) deficits in low‐nutrient reservoirs and P excess in high‐nutrient reservoirs; (2) at given seston C and phytoplankton compositional food quality levels, zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass ratio (Zoo : Phyto) showed a two‐segment piecewise relationship to seston N : P with a maximum at a breakpoint of 12.6 and strong reductions toward the extremes of seston N : P gradient; (3) increasing stoichiometric mismatch between seston and consumers reduced the contribution of cladocerans to zooplankton biomass and increased the trophic position of copepods; and (4) chlorophyll a (Chl a) to total phosphorus (TP) ratio (Chl a : TP) increased with decreasing Zoo : Phyto, and at a given Zoo : Phyto, it was higher in reservoirs with zooplankton dominated by copepods than in reservoirs with zooplankton dominated by cladocerans. These findings suggest that nutrient enrichment might improve stoichiometric constraint on plankton trophic structure in low‐nutrient reservoirs, but enhance negative effect of excess P in high‐nutrient reservoirs. Thus, negative impact of excess P on zooplankton may be a mechanism partly contributing to low Zoo : Phyto and high Chl a : TP in eutrophic reservoirs.

Abstract:Nutrient supply is a key bottom-up control of phytoplankton primary production in lake ecosystems. Top-down control via grazing pressure by zooplankton also constrains primary production and primary production may simultaneously affect zooplankton. Few studies have addressed these bidirectional interactions. We used convergent cross-mapping (CCM), a numerical test of causal associations, to quantify the presence and direction of the causal relationships among environmental variables (light availability, surface water temperature, NO3 -N, and PO4 -P), phytoplankton community composition, primary production, and the abundances of five functional zooplankton groups (large cladocerans, small cladocerans, rotifers, calanoids, and cyclopoids) in Lake Kasumigaura, a shallow, hypereutrophic lake in Japan. CCM suggested that primary production was causally influenced by NO3 -N and phytoplankton community composition; there was no detectable evidence of a causal effect of zooplankton on primary production. Our results also suggest that rotifers and cyclopoids were forced by primary production, and cyclopoids were further influenced by rotifers. However, our CCM suggested that primary production was weakly influenced by rotifers (i.e., bidirectional interaction). These findings may suggest complex linkages between nutrients, primary production, and rotifers and cyclopoids, a pattern that has not been previously detected or has been neglected. We used linear regression analysis to examine the relationships between the zooplankton community and pond smelt (Hypomesus nipponensis), the most abundant planktivore and the most important commercial fish species in Lake Kasumigaura. The relative abundance of pond smelt was significantly and positively correlated with the abundances of rotifers and cyclopoids, which were causally influenced by primary production. This finding suggests that bottom-up linkages between nutrient, primary production, and zooplankton abundance might be a key mechanism supporting high planktivore abundance in eutrophic lakes. Because increases in primary production and cyanobacteria blooms are likely to occur simultaneously in hypereutrophic lakes, our study highlights the need for ecosystem management to resolve the conflict between good water quality and high fishery production.
Small-sized omnivorous fish induce stronger effects on food webs than warming and eutrophication in experimental shallow lakes

Abstract:Warming, eutrophication, and increased omnivory by small-sized fish are global change processes that induce major effects on the food web structure and primary producers of shallow lakes. Despite the key relevance of phytoplankton and periphyton in freshwaters, the combined and potential synergistic effects of fish omnivory, warming and eutrophication, especially on periphyton, remains little addressed, particularly for subtropical shallow lakes. We experimentally tested the food web effects on phytoplankton and periphyton induced by small visually feeding omnivorous fish (Rhodeus ocellatus), high nutrient enrichment and warming (+4.5 °C) in thirty-two 1000 L-mesocosms simulating littoral conditions of subtropical shallow lakes. We aimed at analysing the mechanisms and responses of periphyton and phytoplankton to these experimental factors. All mesocosms included the submerged macrophytes Vallisneria denseserrulata and Potamogeton lucens and artificial plants at 50% plant volume inhabited, plankton and macroinvertebrates. Small-sized visually feeding omnivorous fish enhanced phytoplankton dominance and periphyton loss. These changes coincided with a decrease in zooplankton biomass and a diversity loss of both zooplankton and macroinvertebrates as well as an increase in snail abundance. Fish presence led to a collapse of cladocerans, thereby releasing the grazing pressure on phytoplankton, and predator and collector macroinvertebrates were replaced with small snails (Radix peregra < 0.5 cm) resulting in enhanced grazing on periphyton. Eutrophication reinforced the fish effects, while warming had weak or no effects. Our results indicate that omnivory by small-sized visually feeding fish may induce stronger effects on the food webs of shallow lakes, towards phytoplankton-dominated states, than the combined effect of nutrient enrichment and warming under the present experimental conditions.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities such as eutrophication and fishing have prominent effects on freshwater ecosystems. However, the ways in which ecosystem function and biodiversity respond to multiple drivers from eutrophication and top‐down predation remains inconclusive. We studied zooplankton communities in 102 subtropical shallow lakes in the eastern plain of China and further examined the joint effects of nutrient enrichment and predation on biodiversity and ecological networks. We found that alpha diversity was negatively influenced by nutrient conditions (such as total phosphorus and total nitrogen [TN]), whereas beta diversity (β‐diversity) was positively related to nutrients and was also structured by omnivorous fish showing a unimodal pattern. Furthermore, the network skewness of zooplankton increased with nutrient enrichment, especially TN, and was negatively related to omnivorous fish. This skewness is more sensitive than β‐diversity, whereas negative skew is primarily caused by omnivorous fish. Our results demonstrated that top‐down effects were dominant for zooplankton communities and resulted in structural adjustment of zooplankton communities, mainly with an increase in fish predation. A negative skewed network indicates the presence of more generalist species and stronger connections among the zooplankton assemblages, as well as decreased β‐diversity.

Abstract:Human activities, such as land use change and eutrophication, threaten freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem function. In this study, we examined both the α- and β-diversity of plankton communities, that is, bacteria/prokaryotic algae, eukaryotic algae, and zooplankton/metazoans, using both classical microscopy and high-throughput sequencing methods across 40 lakes of the Yangtze River Basin. The spatial variations in plankton communities were explained by environmental variables such as trophic status index (TSI) and environmental heterogeneity according to non-metric multidimensional scaling analyses, mantel tests, and structural equation model. Our results showed that the compositional dissimilarities of bacteria, cyanobacteria, eukaryotic algae, and metazoans all decreased with the increasing TSI values, and were significantly positively related to environmental dissimilarity. Both the species richness and compositional dissimilarity of zooplankton had positive effects on zooplankton/phytoplankton biomass ratio. Zooplankton diversity was not directly affected by TSI and environmental dissimilarity; however, it was indirectly affected by the biotic interactions with cyanobacteria or eukaryotic algae. In addition, there were significant positive relationships between bacteria/cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae dissimilarities. Our results indicated that increased trophic status and decreased environmental dissimilarity as consequences of eutrophication may weaken the trophic cascading effects of planktonic food chain via reducing the top-down effects of zooplankton on phytoplankton.

Abstract:Top-down cascade effects are among the most important mechanisms underlying community structure and abundance dynamics in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. A current challenge is understanding the factors controlling trophic cascade strength under global environmental changes. Here, we synthesized 161 global sites to analyze how multiple factors influence consumer-resource interactions with fish in freshwater ecosystems. Fish have a profound negative effect on zooplankton and water clarity but positive effects on primary producers and water nutrients. Furthermore, fish trophic levels can modify the strength of trophic cascades, but an even number of food chain length does not have a negative effect on primary producers in real ecosystems. Eutrophication, warming, and predator abundance strengthen the trophic cascade effects on phytoplankton, suggesting that top-down control will be increasingly important under future global environmental changes. We found no influence or even an increasing trophic cascade strength (e.g., phytoplankton) with increasing latitude, which does not support the widespread view that the trophic cascade strength increases closer to the equator. With increasing temporal and spatial scales, the experimental duration has an accumulative effect, whereas the experimental size is not associated with the trophic cascade strength. Taken together, eutrophication, warming, temporal scale, and predator trophic level and abundance are pivotal to understanding the impacts of multiple environmental factors on the trophic cascade strength. Future studies should stress the possible synergistic effect of multiple factors on the food web structure and dynamics.

Abstract:Anthropogenic increases in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations can strongly influence the structure and function of ecosystems. Even though lotic ecosystems receive cumulative inputs of nutrients applied to and deposited on land, no comprehensive assessment has quantified nutrient-enrichment effects within streams and rivers. We conducted a meta-analysis of published studies that experimentally increased concentrations of N and/or P in streams and rivers to examine how enrichment alters ecosystem structure (state: primary producer and consumer biomass and abundance) and function (rate: primary production, leaf breakdown rates, metabolism) at multiple trophic levels (primary producer, microbial heterotroph, primary and secondary consumers, and integrated ecosystem). Our synthesis included 184 studies, 885 experiments, and 3497 biotic responses to nutrient enrichment. We documented widespread increases in organismal biomass and abundance (mean response = +48%) and rates of ecosystem processes (+54%) to enrichment across multiple trophic levels, with no large differences in responses among trophic levels or between autotrophic or heterotrophic food-web pathways. Responses to nutrient enrichment varied with the nutrient added (N, P, or both) depending on rate versus state variable and experiment type, and were greater in flume and whole-stream experiments than in experiments using nutrient-diffusing substrata. Generally, nutrient-enrichment effects also increased with water temperature and light, and decreased under elevated ambient concentrations of inorganic N and/or P. Overall, increased concentrations of N and/or P altered multiple food-web pathways and trophic levels in lotic ecosystems. Our results indicate that preservation or restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem functions of streams and rivers requires management of nutrient inputs and consideration of multiple trophic pathways.

Abstract:Seagrass meadows are experiencing worldwide declines mainly because of nutrient enrichment. However, knowledge about how eutrophication affects its food web structure is still limited. Based on decade-scale observations in a tropical seagrass meadow, we analysed primary producer structures, isotopic niche, and the diets of consumers respond to the decade nutrient enrichment. Through decades of nutrient enrichment, the biomass of epiphytes, particulate organic matter (POM), and macroalgae significantly increased. Correspondingly, the contribution of seagrass to the entire food web decreased significantly. Meanwhile, the isotopic niches of consumers have also become more shrinking, which reflects a more concentrated diet and higher predation pressure for consumers. These findings suggest that eutrophication leads to a significant shift in the structure of primary producers, which has changed food source availability and increased predation pressure, leading to a dietary shift in consumers and a simplified food web structure.
