Abstract:Zooplankton is generally affected by both top-down and bottom-up regulations in aquatic ecosystems. However, the relative strength of top-down and bottom-up controls on zooplankton assemblages is not well understood. Here, we analyzed this question in five lakes of the Yangtze River basin, an area with high population density and thousands of lakes, many of them suffering multiple environmental pressures. We sampled the whole communities of five lakes in the middle reaches of Yangtze River basin from 2006 to 2011 and used structural equation modeling to evaluate the relative importance of joint top-down and bottom-up effects. With increasing total phosphorous (TP), a major shift occurred in trophic structure. Biomass of phytoplankton, rotifers, cyclopoids, and planktivorous fish significantly increased, while cladocerans and calanoids were negatively correlated with increasing TP. The bottom-up effects were strongest at the bottom of the food web (e.g., effects of TP on phytoplankton). Direct bottom-up effects of phytoplankton and other food resources (latent variable) on rotifers and cyclopoids were greater than top-down controls from planktivores. The predation pressure on crustacean zooplankton by planktivores was higher than that on rotifers. In planktivore-dominated systems, piscivores only played a marginal role, whereas they seem affected by water quality. These results suggest not only in the food web processes the important role of nutrient pollution in affecting the top of the food web in these lakes, but also that the impacts and relative strength of bottom-up and top-down controls may vary with zooplankton assemblages, indicating the complexity of food webs in degraded lakes in China.

The feeding habits of small-bodied fishes mediate the strength of top-down effects on plankton and water quality in shallow subtropical lakes

Abstract:The proliferation of small-bodied fishes in lakes is often accompanied by deterioration of water quality and ecosystem function. However, the potential impacts of different types of small-bodied fish species (e.g., obligate zooplanktivores and omnivores) on subtropical lake ecosystems in particular have been overlooked mainly due to their small size, shorter life spans and lower economic value. Therefore, we conducted a mesocosm experiment to elucidate how plankton communities and water quality respond to different types of small-bodied fishes, including a common zooplanktivorous fish (thin sharpbelly Toxabramis swinhonis) and other small-bodied omnivorous fishes (bitterling Acheilognathus macropterus, crucian carp Carassius auratus and sharpbelly Hemiculter leucisculus). During the experiment, the mean weekly total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chemical oxygen demand (CODMn), turbidity, chlorophyll-a (Chl.α) and trophic level index (TLI) values were generally higher in treatments where fish were present compared to treatments where fish were absent, but responses varied. At the end of the experiment, phytoplankton abundance and biomass and the relative abundance and biomass of cyanophyta were higher while the abundance and biomass of large-bodied zooplankton were lower in the fish-present treatments. Moreover, the mean weekly TP, CODMn, Chl.α and TLI values were generally higher in treatments with the obligate zooplanktivore, thin sharpbelly, when compared to treatments with omnivorous fishes. Also, the ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass was the lowest, and the ratio of Chl.α to TP was the highest in treatments with thin sharpbelly. Collectively, these general findings indicate that an overabundance of small-bodied fishes can have adverse effects on water quality and plankton communities and that small-bodied zooplanktivorous fishes likely induce stronger top-down effects on plankton and water quality than omnivorous fishes. Our results emphasise that small-bodied fishes should be monitored and controlled if overabundant when managing or restoring shallow subtropical lakes. From the perspective of environmental protection, the combined stocking of different piscivorous fish species that feed in different habitat types could be a way forward to control small-bodied fishes with different feeding habits, but more research is needed to assess the feasibility of this approach.

Abstract:The demographic traits of an organism are key components of its fitness and life history theory aims at identifying the environmental drivers underlying the evolution of life history strategies. For fishes, the equilibrium species, those investing into larval survival (large eggs, parental care) rather than into absolute fecundity, are hypothesized to have evolved in stable and predictable environments with high biotic pressure. Human induced nutrient enrichment in many lakes around the world makes them increasingly subjected to perturbations such as anoxia and toxic algal blooms. We hypothesized that eutrophication results in lakes becoming more unstable, unpredictable and less resource-limited, in turn less favorable to equilibrium species. Another hypothesis states that lacustrine environment stability increases with ecosystem size. This study presents the first attempt to compare the two hypotheses in a group of 26 lakes. We found that the population abundance of equilibrium species was negatively related to increasing eutrophication. Long-lived and highly fecund periodic species responded more positively to eutrophication than short lived opportunistic species, with no parental care. This result could be demonstrated by seasonality in primary productivity which favors periodic species, disconnection from the river which prevents good colonist (i.e., opportunistic) species to (re)-establish after perturbation events, and predation by periodic species on opportunistic species. In contrast, we found no support for the ecosystem size hypothesis. Overall, we showed that human driven eutrophication affected species according to their life history strategies, reinforcing the usefulness of life history theory as a framework for assessing fish community response to a large array of human perturbations. More generally, our study emphasizes the importance of species traits to assess, explain, and predict community responses to human and natural perturbations.
Changes in the relationship between zooplankton and phytoplankton biomasses across a eutrophication gradient

Abstract:The relationship between zooplankton biomass and phytoplankton biomass can provide insight into the structure and function of lake biological communities. We used a Bayesian network model to analyze a continental-scale data dataset to estimate changes in the relationship between zooplankton (Z) and phytoplankton (P) biomasses along a eutrophication gradient. The Bayesian network model allowed us to combine two different measurements of phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a concentration and directly observed biovolume) to improve the precision of estimates of true biomass within each sample. The model also allowed us to estimate separate relationships between P and zooplankton abundance and between P and mean individual zooplankton biomass and then to combine these two relationships into an estimate of seasonal mean zooplankton biomass. The resulting analysis indicated that seasonal mean zooplankton biomass increased proportionally with phytoplankton biomass in oligotrophic lakes, yielding a constant ratio between Z and P and suggested that bottom-up forces determined zooplankton biomass in these systems. In eutrophic lakes, seasonal mean zooplankton biomass was nearly constant with increases in phytoplankton biomass, yielding a decrease in the ratio between Z and P with increasing eutrophication. Bottom-up forces, as quantified by an increase in the proportion of cyanobacteria, accounted for approximately one fifth of the residual variance in the model as the relationship between Z and P changed from direct proportionality in oligotrophic lakes to the nearly constant value of Z observed in eutrophic lakes, suggesting that a combination of both top-down and bottom-up forces likely determined zooplankton biomass in eutrophic lakes.

Abstract:Ecological stoichiometry of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) has been well studied as a driver of zooplankton dynamics in lakes; yet, we still lack a thorough investigation of the impact of varying N loads, and the resulting variation in resource N:P stoichiometry. We used a mesocosm experiment in which we altered inputs of N and P to observe the impact of stoichiometric variation in nutrient concentrations on zooplankton density and community composition for a period of 10 weeks. Our experiment achieved a wide gradient of environmental N:P availability primarily by altering N loading, while keeping P inputs consistent across treatments. Across all treatments, we observed declines in zooplankton density through time and a reduction in cladocerans relative to copepods. These temporal patterns correlated to a loss of P in the water column and higher food resource N:P, as well as warming temperatures throughout the experiment. Our experiment highlights the potential importance of resource quality over quantity for supporting higher zooplankton densities, as well as the impacts of high temperatures. These results suggest disproportionately high N loads relative to P as is common in agricultural landscapes could reduce zooplankton populations, despite stimulating greater primary production.

Abstract:Stoichiometric mismatch between phytoplankton and zooplankton has implication for trophic transfer efficiency. Phosphorus (P) enrichment is expected to lower phytoplankton carbon (C) to P ratio (C : P) and thereby either alleviate P deficiency or induce excess P for zooplankton. However, the generality of zooplankton facing excess P and its effect on plankton trophic structure in natural systems are poorly understood. We analyzed the stoichiometry of seston and zooplankton, and plankton trophic structure in 32 (sub)tropical Chinese reservoirs. Our results showed that (1) stoichiometric mismatch between seston and zooplankton involved P or/and nitrogen (N) deficits in low‐nutrient reservoirs and P excess in high‐nutrient reservoirs; (2) at given seston C and phytoplankton compositional food quality levels, zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass ratio (Zoo : Phyto) showed a two‐segment piecewise relationship to seston N : P with a maximum at a breakpoint of 12.6 and strong reductions toward the extremes of seston N : P gradient; (3) increasing stoichiometric mismatch between seston and consumers reduced the contribution of cladocerans to zooplankton biomass and increased the trophic position of copepods; and (4) chlorophyll a (Chl a) to total phosphorus (TP) ratio (Chl a : TP) increased with decreasing Zoo : Phyto, and at a given Zoo : Phyto, it was higher in reservoirs with zooplankton dominated by copepods than in reservoirs with zooplankton dominated by cladocerans. These findings suggest that nutrient enrichment might improve stoichiometric constraint on plankton trophic structure in low‐nutrient reservoirs, but enhance negative effect of excess P in high‐nutrient reservoirs. Thus, negative impact of excess P on zooplankton may be a mechanism partly contributing to low Zoo : Phyto and high Chl a : TP in eutrophic reservoirs.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities such as eutrophication and fishing have prominent effects on freshwater ecosystems. However, the ways in which ecosystem function and biodiversity respond to multiple drivers from eutrophication and top‐down predation remains inconclusive. We studied zooplankton communities in 102 subtropical shallow lakes in the eastern plain of China and further examined the joint effects of nutrient enrichment and predation on biodiversity and ecological networks. We found that alpha diversity was negatively influenced by nutrient conditions (such as total phosphorus and total nitrogen [TN]), whereas beta diversity (β‐diversity) was positively related to nutrients and was also structured by omnivorous fish showing a unimodal pattern. Furthermore, the network skewness of zooplankton increased with nutrient enrichment, especially TN, and was negatively related to omnivorous fish. This skewness is more sensitive than β‐diversity, whereas negative skew is primarily caused by omnivorous fish. Our results demonstrated that top‐down effects were dominant for zooplankton communities and resulted in structural adjustment of zooplankton communities, mainly with an increase in fish predation. A negative skewed network indicates the presence of more generalist species and stronger connections among the zooplankton assemblages, as well as decreased β‐diversity.

Abstract:This study was undertaken to elucidate the food web structure and interspecific interactions in the lakes and reservoirs undergoing eutrophication and to assess the efficacy of lake-wide non-traditional biomanipulation (direct predation of cyanobacteria by proliferating planktivorous fish) for bloom management. Analyses of aquatic organisms and stable isotopes of basic food sources and consumers were performed for Zhangze Reservoir in North-central China. Additionally, an improved scheme based on plankton changes and interspecific interactions is proposed on this basis. Compared with other widely-studied eutrophic reservoirs, the δ 15 N value of each component of the food web in Zhangze Reservoir was higher, the food chain was relatively long and the δ 13 C range of fish consumers was narrower. Planktivorous fish consumed phytoplankton as their primary food source. However, the phytoplankton biomass and the percentage of cyanobacteria increased, and eutrophication did not improve. The findings concerning the composition of consumers and their food sources in Zhangze Reservoir indicate the urgent need to change the fish structure to optimise the structure of plankton community and mitigate phytoplankton overgrowth. The study findings provide a basis for the implementation of effective eutrophication management strategies in lakes and reservoirs where planktivorous fish are prevalent.

Abstract:Both eutrophication and salinization are growing global environmental problems in freshwater ecosystems, threatening the water quality and various aquatic organisms. However, little is known about their interactive effects on theses stressors and the role of lake depth on these interactions. We used field surveys to compared zooplankton assemblages over four seasons in eight Yunnan Plateau lakes with different trophic states, salinization levels, and water depths. The results showed that: 1) the species number (S), density (D Zoop ), and biomass (B Zoop ) of zooplankton exhibited strong seasonal dynamics, being overall higher in the warm seasons. 2) Data collected over four seasons and summer data both revealed highly significant positive relationships of S, D Zoop , and B Zoop with total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and phytoplankton chlorophyll a (Chl a ). 3) S, D Zoop , and B Zoop displayed a unimodal relationship with salinity, peaking at 400–1000 μS/cm (conductivity, to reflect salinity). 4) The two large-sized taxa (cladocerans and copepods) generally increased at low-moderate levels of TN, TP, Chl a , and Cond and was constant or decreased at high levels. The average body mass (biomass/density) of crustaceans decreased with increasing TN, TP, Chl a , and conductivity. Our findings indicate that zooplankton may be more vulnerable in deep lakes than in shallow lakes when exposed to conductivity stress even under mesotrophic conditions, and the overall decrease in size in zooplankton assemblages under the combined stress of eutrophication and salinization may result in a lowered grazing effect on phytoplankton.

Abstract:Historically, freshwater lakes have been widely assumed to be singly limited by phosphorus (P) because the dominant paradigm assumes that nitrogen fixation (N2 fixation) will compensate for any nitrogen (N) deficits. However, a growing body of evidence demonstrates that primary producer response to nutrient manipulation most frequently indicates co-limitation by N and P. Differences in N and P supply ratio have been shown to influence the identity and severity of nutrient limitation, but whether N and P concentration and the ratio of N to P concentrations can explain the frequency of co-limitation in aquatic primary producer assemblages remains unclear, especially in ecosystems subject to human perturbation that strongly increase nutrient availability. We determined how resource availability influences nutrient limitation by N and P of phytoplankton primary production across 12 lakes in Minnesota that vary in watershed land use and lake nutrient levels. We measured epilimnetic lake metabolism and indicators of N2 fixation to evaluate their influence on nutrient limitation status of planktonic algal assemblages. Despite large differences in land use (agricultural, urban, and suburban) and water column N and P availability, planktonic algal response to nutrient manipulation was consistently characterized by co-limitation by N and P across years and months. Neither P availability (as concentrations of total and inorganic forms) nor N2-flux rate predicted responses to nutrient additions. N availability significantly influenced responses of phytoplankton to nutrient additions across years, but this effect was small. The ratio of total N to total P significantly influenced the response to single additions of N and P (these effects were negative and positive, respectively) in summer 2013. Importantly, higher lake primary production and heterocyte count (number of nitrogen fixing cells) were also associated with a stronger, positive response to N + P addition. Overall, these data suggest that planktonic algal assemblages are predominantly characterized by co-limitation by N and P despite large and diverse human impacts on nutrient inputs. Additionally, higher rates of primary production increase the likelihood of co-limitation. Together, these results further support the paradigm shift toward dual management of N and P in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Biomanipulation based on removal of coarse fish, piscivorous fish stocking and sometimes also planting of submerged macrophytes has been used to restore temperate eutrophic shallow lakes. However, in warmer lakes, omnivorous fish are more abundant and apparently less well controlled by the piscivores. We investigated the food web structure and energy pathways of fish in the restored part of subtropical Lake Wuli, China, using gut contents analysis (GCA) and the IsoSource model based on stable isotope analysis (SIA) data. We found that omnivores dominated the fish community in terms of numbers. GCA showed that cyclopoid copepods constituted the main food item for the planktivores, while all adult omnivorous fish fed mainly on macrophytes. The IsoSource SIA model supported these results. Furthermore, piscivores consumed shrimps rather than juvenile omnivores, and the SIA analysis revealed no trophic links between piscivores and adult omnivores or zooplanktivores. We conclude that macrophytes constituted an important food item for omnivores, potentially promoting population growth of omnivores as control by piscivores was weak. This may yield a high predation pressure on both zooplankton and on macrophytes, possibly preventing the establishment of a stable macrophyte state following restoration of eutrophic lakes unless the fish density is regularly controlled.

Abstract:Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3-PUFA) are central to the growth and reproduction of aquatic consumers. Dissolved nutrients in aquatic ecosystems strongly affect algal taxonomic composition and thus the production and transfer of specific ω3-PUFA to consumers at higher trophic levels. However, most studies were conducted in nutrient-poor, oligotrophic lakes, leading to an insufficient understanding of how water nutrients affect algal ω3-PUFA and their trophic transfer in consumers in highly eutrophic lakes. We conducted a field investigation in a highly eutrophic lake and collected basal food sources (phytoplankton, periphyton and macrophytes) and aquatic consumers (invertebrates, zooplankton and fish), and measured their fatty acid (FA) composition. Our results showed that periphyton and phytoplankton were both important sources of ω3-PUFA supporting the highly eutrophic lake food web. High water nutrient levels led to low ω3-PUFA levels in phytoplankton and periphyton, resulting in decreased nutritional quality. Consequently, ω3-PUFA of invertebrates and zooplankton reflected variations in ω3-PUFA of phytoplankton and periphyton, respectively. The ω3-PUFA levels of fish decreased as phytoplankton and periphyton ω3-PUFA decreased. Among fish, the Redfin Culter (Cultrichthys erythropterus) and Bar Cheek Goby (Rhinogobius giurinus) exhibited significantly higher levels of EPA and DHA compared to the Pond Loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus), which may have been caused by their different feeding modes. Decreases in the ω3-PUFA levels of basal food sources may be one of the causes leading to the reduction of trophic links in aquatic food webs. Our study elucidated the sources and fate of ω3-PUFA in highly eutrophic lakes, complemented previous studies in oligo- and mesotrophic lakes, and emphasized the role of high-quality food sources. Our results offer new perspectives for the conservation and management of highly eutrophic lake ecosystems.
Phytoplankton Community Dynamics in Ponds with Diverse Biomanipulation Approaches

Abstract:The rising challenge of eutrophication in aquatic systems globally necessitates an understanding of phytoplankton community dynamics under diverse biomanipulation approaches. This study, conducted from June 2022 to July 2023 in the Yuqiao Reservoir's ponds in China, explored phytoplankton dynamics across ponds under different biomanipulation strategies. The study included a pond (BL) without fish stocking, a pond (CH) stocked with carnivorous and herbivorous fish, and another pond (CFD) incorporating a mix of carnivorous, filter-feeding, and detritus-feeding fish. Substantial seasonal variations in phytoplankton density and biomass were observed. In the BL pond, phytoplankton density ranged from 0.23 × 107 to 3.21 × 107 ind/L and biomass from 0.71 to 7.10 mg/L, with cyanobacteria predominantly in warmer seasons and a shift to cryptophytes and chrysophytes in winter. The CH pond exhibited a density range from 0.61 × 107 to 8.04 × 107 ind/L and biomass of 1.11 to 7.58 mg/L. Remarkably, the CFD pond demonstrated a significant reduction in both density (0.11 × 107 to 2.36 × 107 ind/L) and biomass (0.27 to 5.95 mg/L), indicating the effective implementation of its biomanipulation strategy. Key environmental factors including total nitrogen, water temperature, pH, chlorophyll-a, and total phosphorus played a significant role in shaping phytoplankton communities. The study highlights the importance of tailored biomanipulation strategies in aquatic ecosystem management, emphasizing long-term monitoring for sustainable management of eutrophication.

Abstract:How fish communities change with eutrophication in temperate lakes is well documented, while only a few studies are available from subtropical lakes. We investigate the fish community structure in 36 lakes located in the Yangtze River basin, covering a wide nutrient gradient. We found that fish species richness and total fish catch per unit effort (CPUE) increased significantly with chlorophyll a (Chla). Among the different feeding types, the proportion of zooplanktivores increased significantly with Chla, while the percentage of omnibenthivores showed no obvious changes; the CPUE of piscivorous Culter spp. increased with Chla, while their proportion of total catch decreased pronouncedly. Based on the index of relative importance (IRI), the most important and dominant fish species was the zooplanktivorous Sijiao (Toxabramis swinhonis), followed by the omniplanktivorous sharpbelly (Hemiculter leucisculus) and the omnibenthivorous crucian carp (Carassius carassius), a small-sized species belonging to the Cyprinidae family. The CPUE of these three species increased significantly with Chla. The focus has, so far, been directed at large fish, but as emphasized by our results, the abundant small fish species were dominant in our subtropical study lakes even in terms of biomass, and, accordingly, we recommend that more attention be paid to the population dynamics of these species in the future.

Abstract:Terrestrial organic matter (t-OM) has been recognized as an important cross-boundary subsidy to aquatic ecosystems. However, recent evidence has shown that t-OM contributes little to promote secondary production in lakes because it is a low-quality food for aquatic consumers. To resolve this conflict, we performed a field experiment using leaf litter as t-OM. In the experiment, we monitored zooplankton biomass in enclosures with and without addition of leaf litter under shaded and unshaded conditions and assessed food web changes with stable isotope analyses. We then examined whether or not leaf litter indeed stimulates lake secondary production and, if it does, which food chain, the detritus-originated food chain ("brown" food chain) or the algae-originated food chain ("green" food chain), contributes more to this increase. Analyses with stable isotopes showed the importance of t-OM in supporting secondary production under ambient lake conditions. However, the addition of the leaf litter increased the zooplankton biomass under unshaded conditions but not under shaded conditions. We found that phosphorus was leached from leaf litter at much faster rate than organic carbon and nitrogen despite its low content in the leaf litter. These results showed that leaf litter stimulated the increase in zooplankton biomass mainly through the green food chain rather than the brown food chain because the leaf litter supplied limiting nutrients (i.e., phosphorus) for primary producers.Our results indicate that the functional stoichiometry of the subsidized organic matter plays a crucial role in determining the relative importance of brown and green food chains in promoting production at higher trophic levels in recipient ecosystems.

Abstract:Phytoplankton contribute approximately 50% to the global photosynthetic carbon (C) fixation. However, our understanding of the corresponding C sequestration capacity and driving mechanisms associated with each individual phytoplankton taxonomic group is limited. Particularly in the hydrologically dynamic system with highly complex surface hydrological processes (floodplain lake systems). Through investigating seasonal monitoring data in a typical floodplain lake system and estimation of primary productivity of each phytoplankton taxonomic group individually using novel equations, this study proposed a phytoplankton C fixation model. Results showed that dominant phytoplankton communities had a higher gross carbon sequestration potential (CSP) (9.50 ± 5.06 Gg C each stage) and gross primary productivity (GPP) (65.46 ± 25.32 mg C m −2 d −1 ), but a lower net CSP (−1.04 ± 0.79 Gg C each stage) and net primary productivity (NPP) (−5.62 ± 4.93 mg C m −3 d −1 ) than rare phytoplankton communities in a floodplain lake system. Phytoplanktonic GPP was high (317.94 ± 73.28 mg C m −2 d −1 ) during the rainy season and low (63.02 ± 9.65 mg C m −2 d −1 ) during the dry season. However, their NPP reached the highest during the rising-water stage and the lowest during the receding-water stage. Findings also revealed that during the rainy season, high water levels ( p = 0.56**) and temperatures ( p = 0.37*) as well as strong solar radiation ( p = 0.36*) will increase photosynthesis and accelerate metabolism and respiration of dominant phytoplankton communities, then affect primary productivity and CSP. Additionally, water level fluctuations drive changes in nutrients ( p = −0.57*) and metals ( p = −0.68*) concentrations, resulting in excessive nutrients and metals slowing down phytoplankton growth and reducing GPP. Compared with the static water lake system, the floodplain lake system with a lower net CSP became a heterotrophic C source.

Abstract:Biological manipulation, involving fish stockings, is commonly used to counteract the deterioration of submerged vegetation in eutrophic lakes. Nevertheless, the non-consumptive effects (NCEs) of stocked carnivorous fish are often overlooked. Using a controlled experimental system, we investigated the NCEs of a native carnivorous fish, snakehead ( Channa argus ), on two key biological factors, herbivore-dominated grass carp ( Ctenopharyngodon idella ) and disturbance-dominated loach ( Misgurnus anguillicaudatus ), influencing submerged plants growth. Additionally, we conducted a meta-analysis on predation risk and primary productivity. The results reveal that predation risk induces oxidative stress damage and affects grass carp growth. Non-significant changes in cortisol and glucose may be linked to predation risk prediction. Simultaneously, predation risk reduces fish feeding and disturbance behavior, relieving pressure on submerged plants to be grazed and disturbed, thereby supporting plant development. The presence of submerged plants, in turn, enhances loach activity and influences water body characteristics through negative feedback. Furthermore, the meta-analysis results indicate the facilitative effect of predation risk on primary producers. Our findings contribute to the understanding of biological manipulation theory. We demonstrate that the predation risk associated with introducing carnivorous fish can promote the growth of submerged plants through behaviorally mediated indirect effects. This highlights the potential utility of predation risk in lake restoration efforts.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A whole-lake manipulation of food-web structure (introduction of a top predator, northern pike, to a minnow-dominated lake) was performed in a Canadian Shield lake (L110) to examine the stoichiometric consequences of changes in planktonic community structure generated by altered food-web structure. Minnow abundance, zooplankton biomass and community composition, microconsumer abundance, and concentration and carbon–phosphorus (C:P) ratio of suspended particulate matter were monitored in L110 and unmanipulated L240 before (1992) and after (1993–95) pike introduction. Algal biomass in L110 determined from microscopic examination for postmanipulation and premanipulation periods was also compared with dynamics in a suite of unmanipulated reference lakes from long-term monitoring records. Pike were added in spring in 1993 and 1994 in sufficient quantity to raise pike biomass to levels of around 22 kg ha−1 by 1994. Minnow populations in L110 responded dramatically, decreasing to levels 30% (1993), 10% (1994), and less than 1% (1995) of premanipulation values. However, most components lower in the food web did not respond in a manner consistent with predictions of existing food-web theory, such as the idea of cascading trophic interactions (CTI). While Daphnia biomass increased in L110 in the first year following manipulation, consistent with CTI, this effect was temporary and Daphnia collapsed in 1995, the year of lowest minnow abundance. Total zooplankton biomass in both lakes declined during the study period and, contrary to CTI, this decline appeared somewhat stronger in L110 than in L240. Dominant microconsumers (heterotrophic microflagellates) did not differ among years in either lake and did not appear to respond to food-web manipulation. At the bottom of the food web, no changes in bacterial biomass occurred in either lake. However, total concentrations of particulate matter appeared to increase in L110 after manipulation (contrary to expectations based on the theory of CTI) while algal biomass did not change in the manipulated lake relative to reference systems. Finally, particulate C:P increased in both L110 and L240 during the study period. The lack of strong response of Daphnia, the lack of response of the microbial food web, decreases in zooplankton biomass and increases in particulate biomass following reduction of minnow populations after piscivore introduction are at odds with expectations from existing food-web theory, such as the idea of CTI as currently formulated. However, the extremely high C:P ratios in particulate matter at the base of the food webs in these lakes, the coincidence of zooplankton declines and increases in particulate C:P ratios, and the results of small-scale mesocosm food-quality experiments are consistent with a hypothesis of a stoichiometric constraint operating on food-web dynamics in this and similar ecosystems.

Abstract:Inter‐relations between water quality and piscivore populations have remained poorly studied but their quantification is crucial for the ecosystem‐based management of inland waters. Here, we aimed to estimate the relative strength of bottom‐up and top‐down trophic interactions between water quality and fish community composition using a comparative approach. Our main hypothesis was that lakes with an abundant piscivore (mainly pikeperch, Sander lucioperca, Percidae) stock would have better water quality than similar lakes with a poor piscivore stock. We used structural equation models on biomass catch per unit of effort data from standard gillnet test fishing to examine the effects of predators (pikeperch, pike [Esox lucius, Esocidae] and piscivorous perch [Perca fluviatilis, Percidae]) on cyprinids (Cyprinidae), and the effects of cyprinids, nutrients, and lake depth on water quality measured as chlorophyll‐a concentration and turbidity. We derived the dataset covering a single summer snapshot of 138 Finnish pikeperch lakes from national databases. Nutrients and lake depth index, the main principal component describing positive effects of nutrient concentrations and negative effects of lake depth, had a positive effect on chlorophyll‐a concentration and turbidity. Pikeperch had a detectable negative effect on both planktivorous and benthivorous cyprinids. While pike also had a negative effect on benthivorous cyprinids, both groups of cyprinids had a positive effect on pikeperch and pike. Supporting the strong, fish‐independent bottom‐up regulation, no significant relationships were detected between the cyprinids and water quality. This study suggests that the bottom‐up effects override the top‐down effects, and despite pikeperch is an efficient piscivore, the observed stock levels did not cascade down to improved water quality. Thus, in lake restoration, reductions of nutrient loading appear more efficient than biomanipulation aimed to strengthen the top‐down links.

Abstract:Understanding how the causal feedback between phytoplankton and environmental drivers controlling the chlorophyll a (Chl a, as a proxy of phytoplankton biomass)–nutrient relationships are modulated under different ecosystem conditions is a major challenge in aquatic ecology. Using an empirical dynamic model (convergent cross mapping) on a 20‐yr dataset on 20 Danish lakes, we quantified hypothesized causal feedback networks for each lake and related them to lake system properties (e.g., mean water depth, nutrient concentrations and extent of reduction, climate warming) vs. the Chl a–nutrient relationship (estimated from generalized least square models). The results showed prevalent causal feedback across the studied lakes, which demonstrated clear patterns for the tested ecosystem variations. Weaker causal feedbacks were found in deeper lakes and lakes with larger warming trends, while stronger causal feedbacks appeared in lakes experiencing greater reductions of TP (total phosphorus) and TN (total nitrogen). Moreover, these causal feedbacks showed a strong and positive coupled pattern. Most of the causal feedbacks worked as enhancement loops, which promote the sensitivity of phytoplankton to TP, not least in shallow lakes with a high TP reduction, and as regulatory loops, which force a shift in the Chl a–TN relationship from a more negative slope in lakes experiencing a high nutrient reduction and weak warming to a positive slope in lakes with low nutrient reduction and stronger warming. Our findings suggest a mechanistic explanation of how internal feedbacks regulate the Chl a–nutrient relationships across a broad gradient of nutrient reductions, climate warming, and lake morphologies.
