Abstract:Traffic flow data collected by traffic sensing devices is crucially important for transportation planning and transportation management. However, traffic sensing devices are typically distributed sparsely in road networks owing to their high installation and maintenance costs. The present study combines license plate recognition (LPR) data with taxi GPS trajectory data to develop a data-driven approach for estimating traffic flow in large road networks. The approach is applied to estimate traffic flow for an actual road network comprising 5,495 road segments using the traffic flow records of only 68 road segments (1.2% of the total). Five-fold cross validation is employed to verify the estimated traffic flow, and the data requirements for implementing the proposed method are analyzed. The developed data-driven approach provides an alternative and cost-efficient way of acquiring additional traffic flow information rather than installing more traffic sensing devices on roads.

Abstract:The ability to obtain accurate estimates of city-wide urban traffic patterns is essential for the development of effective intelligent transportation systems and the efficient operation of smart mobility platforms. This paper focuses on the network-wide traffic speed estimation, using trajectory data generated by a city-wide fleet of ride-sourcing vehicles equipped with GPS-capable smartphones. A cell-based map-matching technique is proposed to link vehicle trajectories with road geometries, and to produce network-wide spatio-temporal speed matrices. Data limitations are addressed using the Schattenp-norm matrix completion algorithm, which can minimize speed estimation errors even with high rates of data unavailability. A case study using data from Chengdu, China, demonstrates that the algorithm performs well even in situations involving continuous data loss over a few hours, and consequently, addresses large-scale network-wide traffic state estimation problems with missing data, while at the same time outperforming other data recovery techniques that were used as benchmarks. Our approach can be used to generate congestion maps that can help monitor and visualize traffic dynamics across the network, and therefore form the basis for new traffic management, proactive congestion identification, and congestion mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Hydrological parameters should pass through a careful calibration procedure before being used in a hydrological model that aids decision making. However, significant difficulty is encountered when applying existing calibration methods to regions in which runoff data are inadequate. To achieve accurate hydrological calibration for ungauged road networks, we propose a Bayesian updating framework that calibrates hydrological parameters based on taxi GPS data. Hydrological parameters were calibrated by adjusting their values such that the runoff generated by acceptable parameter sets corresponded to the road disruption periods during which no taxi points are observed. The proposed method was validated on 10 flood-prone roads in Shenzhen and the results revealed that the trends of runoff could be correctly predicted for 8 of 10 roads. This study demonstrates that the integration of hydrological models and taxi GPS data can provide viable alternative measures for model calibration to derive actionable insights for flood hazard mitigation.

Abstract:Automatically acquiring comprehensive, accurate, and real-time mapping information and translating this information into digital maps are challenging problems. Traditional methods are time consuming and costly because they require expensive field surveying and labor-intensive post-processing. Recently, the ubiquitous use of positioning technology in vehicles and other devices has produced massive amounts of trajectory data, which provide new opportunities for digital map production and updating. This paper presents an automatic method for producing road networks from raw vehicle global positioning system (GPS) trajectory data. First, raw GPS positioning data are processed to remove noise using a newly proposed algorithm employing flexible spatial, temporal, and logical constraint rules. Then, a new road network construction algorithm is used to incrementally merge trajectories into a directed graph representing a digital map. Furthermore, the average road traffic volume and speed are calculated and assigned to corresponding road segments. To evaluate the performance of the method, an experiment was conducted using 5.76 million trajectory data points from 200 taxis. The result was qualitatively compared with OpenStreetMap and quantitatively compared with two existing methods based on the F-score. The findings show that our method can automatically generate a road network representing a digital map.

Abstract:Rapid prediction of Road Network Functionality (RNF) during extreme rainfall-induced flooding is crucial for supporting proactive and real-time emergency planning, such as rescue, evacuation planning, and emergency supply distribution. Unlike normal operational conditions, extreme rainfall events introduce complex non-stationary, non-Euclidean characteristics to RNF due to intricate meteorological and hydrological processes, as well as the role of a community's road network in emergency response planning. Conventional physics-based flood simulations and flow-based road network analyses typically lack the computational efficiency required for real-time RNF predictions, hindering timely risk mitigation decisions. This study leverages the accuracy of physics-based simulations and the efficacy of deep-learning technologies to develop a deep learning-based surrogate model for Rain-to-RNF (R2R) predictions. This model couples Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks with Spatial-Temporal Graph Convolutional Networks (ST-GCNs) to uniquely capture the spatiotemporal dynamics of RNF under extreme rainfall events. The predictive accuracy, stability, and versatility of the R2R surrogate model are demonstrated in four flood-prone communities in Zhejiang Province. Its implementation during Typhoon Fitow (2013) over a 30-hour intense rainfall showcases its promising predictive capacity and unparalleled computational efficiency. This research advances disaster management, enhancing the resilience and responsiveness of community infrastructure during extreme weather events.

Abstract:A grid-based GIS approach to flood submergence simulation and risk analysis was proposed using an integration of GIS, telemetering stage and high resolution remote sensing image (ALOS), in southeast plain of Yinzhou district. The digital elevation model (DEM) was created based on 1:10000 topographic maps and 1:5000 thematic maps, and several pre-processing methods, including depression filling, urban terrain and river network correction, were applied. After that, the “source flood” algorithm based on visiting every node of the stack, was adopted to simulate the scope and depth of the inundation with DEM and real-time stage data from the telemetry stations. Finally, flood risk was evaluated by taking the factors of flood submergence depth and hazard-affected body. The combination of the real time flood simulation and risk analysis provides an effective decision-making and disaster assessment for the study area.

Abstract:Rainstorm and the induced flood disaster often cause serious damage to transportation system, resulting in the loss of life and property. To improve the resilience of transportation system, this study proposes a framework for assessing the impacts of rainstorm and flood disaster on road network based on GPS data. The change ratio of traffic flow and congestion index are used to evaluate the disrupted and detour road sections caused by rainstorm. A method based on the change of traffic flow compared to the normal circumstances is proposed to identify the flood‐damaged road sections. A case study in Beijing verifies the feasibility and practicality of the proposed framework, which can effectively assess the impacts of rainstorm from multiple spatial and temporal dimensions, identify the flood‐damaged road sections, and supplement existing research. Research findings can provide scientific basis for the emergency management departments to accurately identify the roads affected by rainstorm and improve the resilience of transportation system.

Abstract:The update frequency of digital road maps influences the quality of road-dependent services. However, digital road maps surveyed by probe vehicles or extracted from remotely sensed images still have a long updating circle and their cost remain high. With GPS technology and wireless communication technology maturing and their cost decreasing, floating car technology has been used in traffic monitoring and management, and the dynamic positioning data from floating cars become a new data source for updating road maps. In this paper, we aim to update digital road maps using the floating car data from China's National Commercial Vehicle Monitoring Platform, and present an incremental road network extraction method suitable for the platform's GPS data whose sampling frequency is low and which cover a large area. Based on both spatial and semantic relationships between a trajectory point and its associated road segment, the method classifies each trajectory point, and then merges every trajectory point into the candidate road network through the adding or modifying process according to its type. The road network is gradually updated until all trajectories have been processed. Finally, this method is applied in the updating process of major roads in North China and the experimental results reveal that it can accurately derive geometric information of roads under various scenes. This paper provides a highly-efficient, low-cost approach to update digital road maps.

Abstract:Rainfall severely impacts human mobility in urban areas and creates significant challenges for traffic management and urban planning. There is an urgent need to understand the impact of rainfall on residents' travels from multiple perspectives. Taxi GPS data contains a large amount of spatiotemporal information about human activities and mobility in urban areas. For this study, we selected the central area of Zhuhai as the study area and used taxi data from August 2020 for the investigation. Firstly, we divided the taxi data into four scenarios, i.e., weekdays with and without rainfall and weekends with and without rainfall and analyzed and compared the trip characteristics for the different scenarios. Then, using the traffic analysis zone (TAZ) as the node and taxi flow between TAZs as edges, we constructed a network and compared the network indicators under the different scenarios. Finally, we used the Leiden algorithm to detect communities in different scenarios and compared the network indicators of the communities. The results showed that on days with rainfall, taxi flow and its spatial and temporal distribution pattern changed significantly, which affected transportation supply and demand. These findings may provide useful references for the formulation of urban transport policies that can adapt to different weather conditions.

Abstract:Using geographic information system to study flooded area and damage evaluation has been a hotspot in environmental disaster research for years. In this paper, a model for flooded area calculation and damage evaluation is presented. Flooding is divided into two types: ‘soruce flood’ and ‘non-source flood’. The source-flood area calculation is based on seed spread algorithm. The flood damage evaluation is calculated by overlaying the flooded ara range with thematic maps and relating the results to other social and economic data. To raise the operational efficiency of the model, a skipping approach is used to speed seed spread algorithm and all thematic maps are converted to raster format before overlay analysis. The accuracy of flooded area calculation and damage evaluation is mainly dependent upon the resolution and precision of the digital elevation model (DEM) data, upon the accuracy of registering all raster layers, and upon the quality of economic information. This model has been successfully used in the Zhejiang Province Comprehensive Water Management Information System developed by the authors. The applications show that this model is especially useful for most counties of China and other developing countries.
Dynamic impact assessment of urban floods on the compound spatial network of buildings-roads-emergency service facilities

Abstract:There are complex interactions among urban spatial elements in rainstorm scenarios. Road interruptions may cause isolation between partially submerged buildings and emergency service facilities, thereby affecting the recovery capability of flooded buildings and the accessibility of emergency service facilities. This study constructed a compound spatial network of urban buildings-roads-emergency service facilities, and analyzed the complex dynamic impacts of time-varying dynamic floods on building risk, road risk, and emergency service accessibility. Firstly, a refined flood risk assessment at the building scale was carried out in combination with flood inundation, building vulnerability, population, vulnerable areas, underground buildings, and life facilities. Secondly, betweenness centrality indicator in complex networks was used to calculate road traffic capacity and collapse threshold, and the accessibility of emergency service facilities is calculated based on road traffic capacity. Finally, the interaction and feedback relationships between the compound spatial network were analyzed. The results show that: (1) Flooded building comprehensive risk analysis reveals that floods have a significant impact on residential and commercial land use, and high-risk flood areas are mainly concentrated in the central region of study area. (2) The road network has a collapse threshold, and the fluctuating state of emergency service accessibility is significantly influenced by road traffic capacity. (3) Roads act as "bridges" connecting buildings and emergency service facilities, leading to the redistribution of building flood comprehensive risk and emergency service accessibility, presenting complex dynamic changes over time. Additionally, submerged roads also affect the accessibility of emergency service facilities around flooded buildings, reducing the recovery capacity of flooded buildings, and exhibiting significant heterogeneity characteristics. Future research should consider the complex impacts of floods on urban elements in order to better manage dynamic flood risk.

Abstract:Water events are the most frequent and costliest climate disasters around the world. In the U.S., an estimated 127 million people who live in coastal areas are at risk of substantial home damage from hurricanes or flooding. In flood emergency management, timely and effective spatial decision-making and intelligent routing depend on flood depth information at a fine spatiotemporal scale. In this paper, crowdsourcing is utilized to collect photos of submerged stop signs, and pair each photo with a pre-flood photo taken at the same location. Each photo pair is then analyzed using deep neural network and image processing to estimate the depth of floodwater in the location of the photo. Generated point-by-point depth data is converted to a flood inundation map and used by an A* search algorithm to determine an optimal flood-free path connecting points of interest. Results provide crucial information to rescue teams and evacuees by enabling effective wayfinding during flooding events.

Abstract:Evaluating the vulnerability of urban transportation systems to flood disasters can provide scientific support for urban disaster prevention and mitigation. Current methods for assessing the flood vulnerability of urban roads often overlook the internal relationships within the complex spatial composition of road networks and surface structures. In this study, based on the theory of complex networks, a dual-layer network assessment model is established for evaluating the flood vulnerability of urban transportation systems by coupling basic geographic data with road network vector data. Unlike traditional methods, this model considers the complex relationship between road network structures and ground surfaces, uncovering a correlation between road network structure and road flood vulnerability. By utilizing this model, the flood vulnerability of road networks in Shenzhen, as well as the city's spatial flood vulnerability, are quantitatively assessed. Based on the quantitative results, we create maps illustrating the distribution of road and spatial flood vulnerability in Shenzhen. The study results reflect that roads highly vulnerable to flooding are mainly located in the central urban area of the southwest, with the flood vulnerability spatially concentrated primarily in the northern and western regions. Using data from government reports, news stories, and other sources over the past five years, we compile recorded instances of urban waterlogging. The quantitative results of the model are consistent with the distribution trend in recorded waterlogging points, indicating that the model's outcomes are authentic and reliable.

A novel method for road network mining from floating car data

Abstract:Vehicles have been increasingly equipped with GPS receivers to record their trajectories, which we call floating car data. Compared with other data sources, these data are characterized by low cost, wide coverage, and rapid updating. The data have become an important source for road network extraction. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for mining road networks from floating car data. First, a Gaussian model is used to transform the data into bitmap, and the Otsu algorithm is utilized to detect road intersections. Then, a clothoid-based method is used to resample the GPS points to improve the clustering accuracy, and the data are clustered based on a distance-direction algorithm. Last, road centerlines are extracted with a weighted least squares algorithm. We report on experiments that were conducted on floating car data from Wuhan, China. To conclude, existing methods are compared with our method to prove that the proposed method is practical and effective.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, with the acceleration of climate change and urban modernization, the flood risk of economic and social development has increased. The problem of urban flood disasters needs to be solved urgently. It is particularly important to conduct flood disaster loss assessment research for further flood control and disaster reduction, and emerging big data have opened a new direction for solving the problem of urban flooding. In this study, the Qianshan River Basin in Guangdong Province was used as an example. The TELEMAC model was used to simulate the inundation process under the design rainstorms of 50a and 100a in the Qianshan River Basin. Based on the heat map service, route planning service, and search service functions of Baidu Maps and Amap open platforms, this study used crawler technology to integrate multi-source data, including traffic survey data, geospatial data, population heat map data at different times (day/night) on weekdays and non-weekdays, and point of interest (POI) data from various industries. A dynamic assessment model of flood disaster loss for traffic, population, and POIs was constructed. The research results could greatly improve the timeliness and accuracy of urban flood disaster analysis, early warning, monitoring, and disaster risk assessment.

Abstract:Flooding undermines the functionality of road links, leading to commute disruption, such as increased commuting time and immobility. Therefore, identifying the critical roads under different flood scenarios is of great significance for transportation planning to minimize flood risk. Previous studies on the road criticality under pluvial floods have focused on mostly structural characteristics of the roads, lacking the quantification of the flood impact on traffic. We employed an integrated framework coupling pluvial flood modeling with commute simulation to assess the criticality of flooded road links under three scenarios (10, 30, and 50 year floods). The output of the flood modeling was used to reconstruct the road network. The routes of each individual commuter under a business as usual (BAU) scenario and three flood scenarios were obtained from the commute simulation. As the flood return period increased, the distribution of traffic flow became more uneven. The road criticality assessment revealed that greater flood impact on roads was closely related to the proximity of water bodies, low-lying topography, and greater commute demands of the region and provided evidence to prioritize locations for interventions. This study helps understand the resilience of transportation systems during floods, thereby enabling practitioners to design effective strategic plans in terms of emergency response, risk management, and urban planning.

Abstract:Dynamic traffic flow map is one of the focuses of recent researches on ITS, but it is limited by the locations and numbers of traffic detectors. This paper presents a method for traffic flow map using the data received from the GPS mobile terminals equipped vehicles. Firstly, a vehicle real-time monitoring GPS system is given. Secondly, a map-matching method was proposed, which eliminated ineffective data by observing the vehicles status and calculated link time cost of each probe vehicle and the average speed. The equation of speed-flow relationship established by observing traffic data, especially the general one established in conditions of any traffic roads under any traffic burden conditions. Thirdly, it developed a dynamic traffic flow map arithmetic based on the results above and successfully solved the questions: data collecting, traffic barrier-free conditions processing and traffic flow map calculating. Finally, the results of simulation experiment indicate that the methods are effective and practical. It can be used as a new real-time network method to control the traffic signal, which is different from the traffic signal controlled method that depends on the timer or road linear controller method.
An Intersection-First Approach for Road Network Generation from Crowd-Sourced Vehicle Trajectories

Abstract:Extracting highly detailed and accurate road network information from crowd-sourced vehicle trajectory data, which has the advantages of being low cost and able to update fast, is a hot topic. With the rapid development of wireless transmission technology, spatial positioning technology, and the improvement of software and hardware computing ability, more and more researchers are focusing on the analysis of Global Positioning System (GPS) trajectories and the extraction of road information. Road intersections are an important component of roads, as they play a significant role in navigation and urban planning. Even though there have been many studies on this subject, it remains challenging to determine road intersections, especially for crowd-sourced vehicle trajectory data with lower accuracy, lower sampling frequency, and uneven distribution. Therefore, we provided a new intersection-first approach for road network generation based on low-frequency taxi trajectories. Firstly, road intersections from vector space and raster space were extracted respectively via using different methods; then, we presented an integrated identification strategy to fuse the intersection extraction results from different schemes to overcome the sparseness of vehicle trajectory sampling and its uneven distribution; finally, we adjusted road information, repaired fractured segments, and extracted the single/double direction information and the turning relationships of the road network based on the intersection results, to guarantee precise geometry and correct topology for the road networks. Compared with other methods, this method shows better results, both in terms of their visual inspections and quantitative comparisons. This approach can solve the problems mentioned above and ensure the integrity and accuracy of road intersections and road networks. Therefore, the proposed method provides a promising solution for enriching and updating navigable road networks and can be applied in intelligent transportation systems.
