Abstract:In order to overcome problems of Au-Cu bimetallic catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination reaction such as instability, Au-Cu-SH/AC catalysts were prepared through the introduction of thiol and tested to examine their activity and stability. It was found that performances of Au-Cu-SH/AC catalysts were quite excellent, with significantly higher catalytic activity and better stability than performances of Au/AC and Au-Cu/AC catalysts. The contents of Cu and thiol additives were also optimized and the optimum molar ratio of Au/Cu/SH was 1 : 1 : 10. Catalyst samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen adsorption/desorption (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was demonstrated that the Au-Cu-SH/AC catalysts were Au-0-based catalysts, due to thiol reducing Au3+ to Au-0 species during the preparation process. Au-0 species exhibited better catalytic activity than Au3+ species for acetylene hydrochlorination, according to the comparison with the composition of active species in different samples through XPS. Furthermore, the sulfhydryl of thiol could bond to the surface of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). It helped in mitigating the oxidation of Au-0 by HCl, protecting Au NPs from structure damage, stabilizing Au NPs in a nearly constant particle size and keeping a more active structure in the reaction environment. Thus, improved dispersity of active species and protection of the active structure of the Au NPs resulted in the better catalytic activity and stability of Au-Cu-SH/AC.

Abstract:In this work, SnO x /activated carbon (AC) was synthesized by hydrothermal method, which was applied to acetylene hydrochlorination. Characterizations showed the SnO x nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on the carbon, with the co-existence of SnO and SnO 2 . The acetylene conversion of SnO x /AC was 75%, much higher than that of SnCl 4 /AC. It was shown that the adsorption of reactants on SnO x was stronger than on SnCl 4 . Theoretical calculations showed the adsorption energies of reactants on SnO x were thermodynamically favorable and suggested that Sn 4+ and Sn 2+ in SnO x have different adsorption capacities for reactants. Through adjusting the valence ratio of SnO x , SnO x /AC O 4 h (O for oxidation) exhibited the best catalytic performance and had the strongest adsorption capacity for the reactants. However, the SnO x /AC catalyst was easily deactivated during acetylene hydrochlorination due to the loss of Sn. The doping of N effectively reduced the loss of Sn and improved the stability of the catalyst due to the anchoring effect of N on the SnO x particles.

Abstract:Acetylene hydrochlorination is a major industrial technology for manufacturing vinyl chloride monomer in regions with abundant coal resources; however, it is plagued by the use of mercury(II) chloride catalyst. The development of a nonmercury catalyst has been extensively explored. Herein, we report a N-doped carbon catalyst derived from ZIF-8 with both high activity and quite good stability. The acetylene conversion reached 92% and decreased slightly during a 200 h test at 220 °C and atmospheric pressure. Experimental studies and theoretical calculations indicate that C atoms adjacent to the pyridinic N are the active sites, and coke deposition covering pyridinic N is the main reason for catalyst deactivation. The performance of those N-doped carbons makes it possible for practical applications with further effort. Furthermore, the result also provides guidance for designing metal-free catalysts for similar reactions.

Abstract:Considering the disadvantages of metallic catalyst and benchmark commercial activated carbon for acetylene hydrochlorination, such as considerable cost, metal loss, serious carbon deposition, and insufficient active sites, nonmetal hollow carbon nanospherical materials (PACP-T) with hierarchical porous structures were synthesized by the copolymerization of aniline and pyrrole via a self-templating method. Local active sites were constructed by decorating the carbon material with heteroatomic groups. The synthetic process dispersed active sites at the atomic level, which was promoted by local structural forces. Experiments and DFT calculations showed that most active sites were pyridinic N+O–. The superior activity might have been caused by the synergistic adsorption and activation of reactants by highly electronegative heteroatoms and abundant π-containing functional groups (CC, NCN, aromatic ring, and pyridinic N+O–) at active sites on the catalyst. This promoted rapid reactions and impeded carbon deposition, which promoted the continuous exposure of active sites. The significantly improved activity and stability of the optimized PACP-800 catalyst promote its potential industrial applications.

Abstract:In the present work, tin-sulfur based catalysts were prepared using Na2SO3 and (CH3SO3)2Sn and were tested in acetylene hydrochlorination. Based on the analysis of experiments results, the acetylene conversion of (CH3SO3)2Sn/S@AC is still over 90%after a 50 h reaction, at the reaction conditions of T = 200 oC, VHCl/VC2H2 = 1.1:1.0 and C2H2-GSHV = 15 h-1. According to the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), HCl adsorption experiments, and acetylene temperature programmed desorption (C2H2-TPD), it is reasonable to conclude that the interaction between Sn and S not only can retard the oxidation of Sn2+ in catalysts but also strengthen the reactant adsorption capacity of tin-based catalysts. Furthermore, results obtained from nitrogen adsorption/desorption and XPS proved that the CH3SO3- can effectively decrease the coke deposition of (CH3SO3)2Sn/AC and thus prolong the lifetime of (CH3SO3)2Sn/AC.

Abstract:Acetylene hydrochlorination is an important coal-based technology for the industrial production of vinyl chloride, however it is plagued by the toxicity of the mercury chloride catalyst. Therefore extensive efforts have been made to explore alternative catalysts with various metals. Here we report that a nanocomposite of nitrogen-doped carbon derived from silicon carbide activates acetylene directly for hydrochlorination in the absence of additional metal species. The catalyst delivers stable performance during a 150 hour test with acetylene conversion reaching 80% and vinyl chloride selectivity over 98% at 200 °C. Experimental studies and theoretical simulations reveal that the carbon atoms bonded with pyrrolic nitrogen atoms are the active sites. This proof-of-concept study demonstrates that such a nanocomposite is a potential substitute for mercury while further work is still necessary to bring this to the industrial stage. Furthermore, the finding also provides guidance for design of carbon-based catalysts for activation of other alkynes.

Abstract:This work aims to solve the problems of low reaction activity of Cu-based catalysts and agglomeration of active centers in acetylene hydrochlorination. Cu-based catalysts supported by N-P co-doped activated carbon (AC) with different content (m Cu-x NP/AC) were manufactured and applied in the acetylene hydrochlorination reaction. It was found that the doping of carriers N and P induced the transformation of Cu2+ to Cu+, and the catalytic activity was markedly improved. Under the optimal reaction temperature of 220 °C, the gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of C2H2 was 90 h−1 and V HCl : V C 2 H 2 was 1.15. The initial activity of the 5%Cu-30NP/AC catalyst reached 95.59%. Through some characterization methods showed the addition of N and P improved the dispersion of Cu in carbon, which increased the ratio of Cu+/Cu2+. The measurement results confirmed that the chemisorption capacity of m Cu-x NP/AC for C2H2 decreased slightly, and the chemisorption capacity for HCl increased significantly, which was the reason for the increased activity of the catalyst. Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have sparked gigantic attention due to their high activity, atomic utilization, and unique metal–host coordination environment. A hard-template method with Lewis acid modification strategy was adopted to obtain mesoporous N-doped carbon nanospheres as the host to prepare a Ru SAC for acetylene hydrochlorination. The single site scattered Ru-N-C active structure constructed by the interaction between the metal–support and the heteroatom-rich mesoporous g-NC nanosphere material provides a rich defect structure that promotes the mass transfer of reactants and products. Furthermore, the N-doped support anchors, disperses and modulates the catalytic active domains, stabilizing their active state and enhancing the adsorption and activation of initial reactants. As a result, the obtained Ru SAC possesses excellent catalytic properties and lasting life in a 500-h test, which render it highly promising for industrial applications. Moreover, the clarified catalytic mechanism provides a reference for the preparation of other SACs.

Abstract:Improving the durability of Au3+ catalyst is an important step in increasing its utility when performing catalyzed acetylene hydrochlorination. Using nitrogen-modified activated carbon (NAC) as support, Au/NAC1 catalyst demonstrated excellent activity and stability when compared with the undoped Au/AC1 under the conditions of 180°C and 1480h−1 of gas hourly space velocity (C2H2 based). Moreover, the Au/NAC1 catalyst delivered a stable performance during a 300h test with the conversion of acetylene and the selectivity of vinyl chloride both reaching more than 99.9% at C2H2 hourly space velocity 100h−1, which substantially exceeds the best results reported in previous literature. The removal of carboxylic groups from the activated carbon surface and the introduction of nitrogen atoms as anchor sites by thermal pretreatment with urea are preferential to stabilize the catalytic active Au3+ species and inhibit the reduction of Au3+ to Au0 in the preparation process of Au/NAC1 catalysts. In addition, increasing the electron density of Au3+ via electron transfer from nitrogen atoms to the Au3+ center can increase the adsorption of hydrogen chloride and inhibit the reduction of Au3+ to Au0 during acetylene hydrochlorination and hence improve the catalytic stability. The excellent catalytic performance of the Au/NAC1 catalyst demonstrated its potential as an alternative to mercury chloride catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination.

Abstract:This study mainly reports on the preparation of Sn-imidazolates (Sn(Im)n) supported on boron and nitrogen-doped activated carbon (AC), which proved to be highly active catalysts for the acetylene hydrochlorination. The obtained materials were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, N2 physisorption, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetry, temperature programed desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The catalytic results revealed that the Sn(Im)n/AC materials manifest enhanced activity and long-term stability than SnCl2/AC catalyst. Regarding the lifetime, 10%Sn(Im)n/(10%BNAC-800) catalyst, exhibiting an acetylene conversion of 80% after 40 h of reaction, is more promising in comparison with 10%Sn(Im)n/AC. These results indicate that the use of 2-methylimidazole improve the activity and stability of SnCl2/AC catalysts in the hydrochlorination of acetylene. Particularly, the supports modified with boric acid and melamine can effectively increase the lifetime of Sn(Im)n/AC catalysts.

Abstract:Ag-N-C catalyst was synthesized by the calcination process with AgNO3 as precursors, active carbon as support, and melamine as an N source. Series of characterizations showed that Ag was transferred into AgCl during the active phase by HCl, and pyridinic structure in the support was bonded with Ag components. Then, Ag-N-C single atom catalyst (SAC) was obtained by washing Ag-N-C with acid, AC-HAADF-STEM showed that Ag presented in single atoms form, and Ag coordinated with the nitrogen atom in the support. Ag loss rate for Ag-N-C SAC was only 0.09% after running 10 h in acetylene hydrochlorination process, which was much smaller than Ag-N-C (57%), indicating that the presence of the Ag-N bond could be inhibiting Ag species loss.

Abstract:N-doped carbon-based materials have been regarded as promising alternative metal-free catalysts for the production of vinyl chloride monomer. In this work, N-doped carbon-based catalysts were synthesized via a melamine/formaldehyde/ polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coating-pyrolysis method, and the performances of the resultant catalysts () were investigated and compared with those of the control samples. The optimal catalyst presented the highest acetylene conversion of 75% at 220 °C and an acetylene gas hourly space velocity of 50 h-1 in 120 h. N2 sorption, Raman spectroscopy, attenuated total Reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption analysis results revealed that the excellent performance of was mainly attributed to the unique nitrogen intercalation pathway generated by the polymeric network coating, which was produced by the reactions among formaldehyde, PVA and melamine. Moreover, the abundant mesopores of facilitated the transfer of the reactants and retarded the deactivation process. This work is expected to provide new insights for the preparation of N-doped activated carbon-based catalysts.

Effect of N, P co-doped activated carbon supported Cu-based catalyst for acetylene hydration

Abstract:N, P co-doped Cu-based catalyst was synthesized by calcining activated carbon impregnated with diammonium hydrogen phosphate and impregnating active component copper. When the contents of N and P were 0.40% and 2.61% and the reaction temperature was 225 ℃, Cu/20NPAC catalyst had 90.4% acetylene conversion and 88.8% acetaldehyde selectivity, and notably, the catalytic performance remained basically unchanged within 20 h of reaction, which was superior than the Cu-based and Zn-based catalysts reported. The characterization results confirmed the excellent catalytic performance depended on the synergistic effect between N, P doped activated carbon and active component copper. TEM showed that the doped support could effectively improve the dispersion of active component copper and inhibit metal agglomeration. H2-TPR and XPS illustrated reduction of high valence copper were effectively inhibited in catalyst preparation and reaction. In addition, TPD showed an increased adsorption to acetylene. The high activity and stability of the catalyst showed that N, P co-doped support was an effective way to improve the catalytic performance of acetylene hydration.

Abstract:Non-metallic catalysts present significant potential for environmentally friendly industrialization of acetylene hydrochlorination. However, the challenge of low activity in non-metallic catalysts hampers their practical application. In this study, we propose the use of a dual-template method to fabricate a layered N-doped carbon catalyst, subsequently applying it to acetylene hydrochlorination reactions. Experimental results indicate that the catalyst exhibits exceptional catalytic performance in acetylene hydrochlorination. Combined with characterization results, the catalyst's performance is positively correlated with its surface area and nitrogen content. Furthermore, DFT calculations suggest that protonated pyridinic nitrogen and pyridinic N + O − have moderate adsorption on HCl, potentially serving as active sites for the catalyst. This study analyzes the impact of various parameters of N-doped carbon catalysts on catalytic performance, providing direction for developing non-metallic catalysts suitable for industrial applications.

Abstract:Vinyl chloride, the monomer of polyvinyl chloride, is produced primarily via acetylene hydrochlorination catalyzed by environmentally toxic carbon-supported HgCl2. Recently, nitrogen-doped carbon materials have been explored as metal-free catalysts to substitute toxic HgCl2. Herein, we describe the development of a cationic covalent triazine network (cCTN, cCTN-700) that selectively catalyzes acetylene hydrochlorination. cCTN-700 exhibited excellent catalytic activity with initial acetylene conversion, reaching ~99% and a vinyl chloride selectivity of >98% at 200 °C during a 45 h test. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature programmed desorption, and charge calculation results revealed that the active sites for the catalytic reaction were the carbon atoms bonded to the pyridinic N and positively charged nitrogen atoms (viologenic N+) of the viologen moieties in cCTN-700, similar to the active sites in Au-based catalysts but different from the those in previously reported nitrogen-doped carbon materials. This research focuses on using cationic covalent triazine polymers for selective acetylene hydrochlorination.

Abstract:A novel bimetallic catalyst based on phosphates Bi and Cu supported on silica gel was prepared by impregnated method and used for the process of hydrochlorination of acetylene to produce vinyl chloride. This catalyst exhibited good catalytic activity and regeneration behavior. The deactivation of the catalyst was mainly due to carbon deposition on its surface. The catalyst can be regenerated by oxidizing the carbon in the air atmosphere at 350°C and can be reused over 16 cycles of reaction and regeneration. Abstract:Using the biomass material chitosan as a precursor and potassium citrate (PC) as a substitute for traditional corrosive activators such as KOH and ZnCl2, a chitosan-based porous carbon material with high specific surface area was successfully prepared and used as a support for the catalytic acetylene acetoxylation reaction. By controlling the PC content and the calcination temperature, chitosan-based porous carbon with a suitable pore structure and abundant surface oxygen functional groups was obtained. The inductively coupled plasma analysis confirmed that the zinc content of the 0.9Zn/CS-PC1-800 catalyst was about 14 wt%, and the acetic acid conversion reached 81%. Furthermore, the scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis showed that the catalyst carrier was mesoporous carbon material, and different PC content formed different pore size distribution at different calcination temperatures. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis demonstrated that the content of O in chitosan-based porous carbon was rich, and PC consumed the O content on the surface of carbon materials during activation. Because O content and pore size structure on carrier surface are closely related to acetic acid conversion, reasonable PC content and calcination temperature are very important for acetic acid conversion.
