Abstract:Rechargeable lithium metal batteries (LMBs) with an ultrahigh theoretical energy density have attracted more and more attentions for their crucial applications of portable electronic devices, electric vehicles, and smart grids. However, the implementation of LMBs in practice is still facing numerous challenges, such as low Coulombic e ciency, poor cycling performance, and complicated interfacial reactions. First-principles calculations have become a powerful technique in lithium battery research eld, in terms of modeling the structures and properties of speci c electrode materials, understanding the charge/discharge mechanisms at the atomic scale, and delivering rational design strategies for electrode materials as well as electrolytes. In this review, theoretical studies on sulfur cathodes, oxygen cathodes, lithium metal anodes, and solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) of LMBs are summarized. A brief introduction of simulation methods is o ered at rst. The next two chapters mainly focus on issues concerning cathodes of LMBs. Then the theoretical researches on the Li metal anode and SSEs are particularly reviewed. The current challenges and potential research directions in each field of LMBs are prospected from a theoretical viewpoint.

Abstract:The research on modeling of lithium-ion battery is to find the relationship between design variables and electrochemical performance of the batteries by studying the internal structure of batteries and analyzing the charge-discharge behavior, using basic physical and chemical theory, including electrode kinetics, ion diffusion and electrolyte solution theory. The research advance on the mathematical modeling of lithium ion battery for the past few years was reviewed. The basic theories and present models, including models of battery performance prediction, thermal behavior, capacity fade and cycling life prediction, were summarized. And finally the future aspect on mathematical modeling of lithium ion battery is expected.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is recognized as one of the promising candidates to break through the specific energy limitations of commercial lithium-ion batteries given the high theoretical specific energy, environmental friendliness, and low cost. Over the past decade, tremendous progress have been achieved in improving the electrochemical performance especially the lifespan by various strategies mainly concentrated on the sulfur cathodes. In this review, the fundamental electrochemistry of sulfur cathode and lithium anode is revealed to understand the current dilemmas. And the advances achieved through diverse strategies are comprehensively summarized, which involves lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) limitation, sulfur redox reaction regulation and electrocatalysis in sulfur cathode and artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI), electrolyte design, and structured anode in lithium anode. Additionally, the differences between laboratory level coin cells and actual pouch cells need to be addressed that only few reports on practical Li-S pouch cell are available due to the unexpected problems on both sulfur cathode and lithium anode which are masked at lithium and electrolyte excess. Lastly, the challenges and perspective toward the practical Li-S batteries are also offered.

Abstract:The all-solid-state lithium-ion battery (ASSLIB) is a promising candidate for next-generation rechargeable batteries due to its high-energy density and potentially low risk of fire hazard compared with that of traditional lithium-ion batteries. However, the widespread application of ASSLIBs is unfortunately hindered by new critical issues arising from the all-solid-state structure, especially mechanical instability. First, employing solid electrolytes (SEs) in ASSLIBs is accompanied by a reduction of cell compliance. The SEs are normally much stiffer than liquid electrolytes, and they are no longer able to effectively accommodate the swelling and shrinkage of active particles during (de)lithiation. This may lead to the interfacial delamination and fragmentation of the active particles and electrolytes. In addition, although SEs are expected to mechanically suppress the growth of lithium dendrites at the lithium metal (Li)/SE interface, lithium dendrites are still observed frequently in battery cells employing SEs even with high stiffness. Hence, comprehending these phenomena and providing solutions to these issues are crucial to promote the application of ASSLIBs. A number of theoretical models have been developed to investigate the chemo-mechanical behavior of ASSLIBs in recent decades. This mini-review aims to comprehensively review them, focusing on the mechanically informed modeling on two main topics: (1) lithium dendrite initiation at the Li/SE interface and propagation through SEs and (2) delamination and fragmentation within a composite electrode due to (de)lithiation of an active particle. With this mini-review, we want to supply a more nuanced understanding for chemo-mechanical behavior at different interfaces in ASSLIBs from a modeling perspective.

Abstract:A passivation layer called the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is formed on electrode surfaces from decomposition products of electrolytes. The SEI allows Li+ transport and blocks electrons in order to prevent further electrolyte decomposition and ensure continued electrochemical reactions. The formation and growth mechanism of the nanometer thick SEI films are yet to be completely understood owing to their complex structure and lack of reliable in situ experimental techniques. Significant advances in computational methods have made it possible to predictively model the fundamentals of SEI. This review aims to give an overview of state-of-the-art modeling progress in the investigation of SEI films on the anodes, ranging from electronic structure calculations to mesoscale modeling, covering the thermodynamics and kinetics of electrolyte reduction reactions, SEI formation, modification through electrolyte design, correlation of SEI properties with battery performance, and the artificial SEI design. Multi-scale simulations have been summarized and compared with each other as well as with experiments. Computational details of the fundamental properties of SEI, such as electron tunneling, Li-ion transport, chemical/mechanical stability of the bulk SEI and electrode/(SEI/) electrolyte interfaces have been discussed. This review shows the potential of computational approaches in the deconvolution of SEI properties and design of artificial SEI. We believe that computational modeling can be integrated with experiments to complement each other and lead to a better understanding of the complex SEI for the development of a highly efficient battery in the future.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have emerged as one of the most hopeful alternatives for energy storage systems. However, the commercialization of Li-S batteries is still confronted with enormous hurdles. The poor conductivity of sulfur cathodes induces sluggish redox kinetics. The shuttling of polysulfides incurs the heavy failure of electroactive substances. Tremendous efforts in experiments to seek efficient catalysts have achieved significant success. Unfortunately, the understanding of the underlying catalytic mechanisms is not very detailed due to the complicated multistep conversion reactions in Li-S batteries. In this review, we aim to give valuable insights into the connection between the catalyst activities and the structures based on theoretical calculations, which will lead the catalyst design towards high-performance Li-S batteries. This review first introduces the current advances and issues of Li-S batteries. Then we discuss the electronic structure calculations of catalysts. Besides, the relevant calculations of binding energies and Gibbs free energies are presented. Moreover, we discuss lithium-ion diffusion energy barriers and Li2S decomposition energy barriers. Finally, a Conclusions and Outlook section is provided in this review. It is found that calculations facilitate the understanding of the catalytic conversion mechanisms of sulfur species, accelerating the development of advanced catalysts for Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is strongly considered as one of the most promising energy storage systems due to its high theoretical energy density and low cost. However, the sluggish reduction kinetics from Li2 S4 to Li2 S during discharge hinders the practical application of Li-S batteries. Although various electrocatalysts have been proposed to improve the reaction kinetics, the electrocatalytic mechanism is unclear due to the complexity of sulfur reduction reactions (SRR). It is crucial to understand the electrocatalytic mechanism thoroughly for designing advanced electrocatalysts. Herein an electrocatalytic model is constructed to reveal the chemical mechanism of the SRR in Li-S batteries based on systematical density functional theory calculations, taking heteroatoms-doped carbon materials as an example. The adsorption energy of LiSy ⋅ (y=1, 2, or 3) radicals is used as a key descriptor to predict the reaction pathway, rate-determining step, and overpotential. A diagram for designing advanced electrocatalysts is accordingly constructed. This work establishes a theoretical model, which is an intelligent integration for probing the complicated SRR mechanisms and designing advanced electrocatalysts for high-performance Li-S batteries.

Abstract:In recent years, due to the increasing demand for portable electronic devices, rechargeable solid-state battery technology has developed rapidly. Lithium-ion batteries are the systems of choice, offering high energy density, flexible and lightweight design, and longer lifespan than comparable battery technologies. Therefore, a better understanding of the relationship between electrochemical mechanism and structural properties from theory and experiment will enable us to accelerate the development of high-performance and security batteries. This review discusses the interplay between theoretical calculation and experiment in the study of lithium ion battery materials. We introduce the application of theoretical calculation method in solid-state batteries through the combination of theory and experiment. We present the concept and assembly technology of solid-state batteries are reviewed. The basic parameters of solid-state electrolytes, especially sulfide-based solid-state electrolytes and their interface mechanisms with high-voltage cathode materials, are analyzed by theoretical methods. We present an overview on the scientific challenges, fundamental mechanisms, and design strategies for solid-state batteries, especially focusing on the issues of stability on solid-state electrolytes and the associated interfaces with both cathode and electrolyte. Owing to the theoretical models, we can not only reveal the unprecedented mechanism from the atomic scale, but also analyze the interface problems in the battery thoroughly, thus effectively designing more promising electrolyte and interface coating materials. It blazed a new trial for engineering an interphase with improved interfacial compatibility for a long-term cyclability.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have attracted increasing interest due to their high theoretical energy density and low-cost sulfur. Challenges are still faced in the development of sulfur cathodes, due to the insulating properties of sulfur and lithium sulfide, diffusion of soluble polysulfides and slow redox kinetics of electrochemical conversion reactions. Hollow-structured materials with features such as high specific surface area, tunable pore structure, and controllable morphology and composition have shown great potential to be applied in high performance sulfur cathodes for LSBs. To promote further breakthroughs in this amazing field, this review highlights on the recent advances of hollow-structured sulfur cathodes, with an emphasis on polar inorganic/organic materials that exhibit strong interactions with polysulfides, thus suppressing the unfavourable shuttle effect, and/or efficient catalytic activity towards sulfur conversion reactions, thus improving the redox kinetics. Material design principles, experimental methods and the subsequent effects on electrochemical performance are discussed. The remaining challenges and perspectives associated with sulfur cathode design and battery evaluation are also presented.

Abstract:The review mainly focuses on the design of high sulfur loading cathodes. It summarizes the major problems and challenges facing high sulfur loading LiS batteries and proposes some effective approaches to achieve high‐performance LiS batteries with high sulfur loading cathodes, which may guide the design of high actual energy density LiS batteries. Lithium‐sulfur batteries hold great potential for next‐generation energy storage systems, due to their high theoretical energy density and the natural abundance of sulfur. Although much progress has been achieved recently, the low actual energy density of LiS batteries is still the key challenge in implementing their practical applications. Because the energy density greatly depends on the areal capacity of their sulfur cathodes, the sulfur content and sulfur loading play an important role in meeting the conditions necessary for practical applications. Therefore, escalating the areal capacity of sulfur cathodes is essential to promote LiS technology from laboratory‐scale devices to industrial (or commercial) systems. In this review, the recent progress in high sulfur loading of LiS batteries (>4 mg cm−2) is highlighted from various aspects, including sulfur hosts, binders, separators, and interlayers. In particular, sulfur hosts derived from carbon, polymer, transition metal oxide/ sulfide, metal‐organic framework, and other novel materials, which can promote high sulfur loading, are discussed in detail. Moreover, unique free‐standing structures and configurational innovation of separators and interlayers are overviewed. Based on the current achievements, future efforts for developing high‐loading LiS batteries are proposed to pave the way for their commercial applications.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur batteries are considered potential high-energy-density candidates to replace current lithium-ion batteries. However, several problems remain to be solved, including low conductivity, huge volume change, and a severe shuttle effect on the cathode side, as well as inevitable lithium dendrites on the anode side. Rare earth compounds, which play vital roles in various industries, show latent capacity as cathode hosts or interlayers to tackle the inherent problems of lithium–sulfur batteries. However, the application of rare earth compounds in lithium–sulfur batteries has not been reviewed so far, despite they showing obvious advantages for tuning polysulfide retention and conversion. In this mini-review, we start by introducing the concept of lithium–sulfur batteries and providing background information on rare earth-based materials. In the main body, we explore rare earth compounds as cathode hosts or interlayers, then discuss various types of each. Finally, we offer an outlook on the existing challenges and possible opportunities for using rare earth compounds as cathode hosts or interlayers for lithium–sulfur batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries are considered an extremely promising new generation of energy storage systems due to their extremely high energy density. However, the practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries is greatly hindered by the poor conductivity of the cathode, the effect of volume expansion, and the "shuttle effect" of the lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). With the development of computer science, the theoretical approach, such as first-principles computation has also gradually emerged. Therefore, this paper reviews the relevant applications of DFT calculation, starting from the research hotspots of lithium-sulfur battery cathode materials (carbon materials, metal compounds, MXenes, polymers, etc.). Specifically, the microscopic level analysis provides insights into the adsorption and catalytic properties of materials for LiPSs and provides theoretical guidance for the practical development of lithium-sulfur battery cathode materials. Finally, an outlook on the development of simulation calculations for lithium-sulfur batteries is provided.

Abstract:The lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery has long been a research hotspot due to its high theoretical specific capacity, low cost, and nontoxicity. However, there are still some challenges impeding the Li–S battery from practical application, such as the shuttle effect of lithium-polysulfides (LiPSs), the growth of lithium dendritic, and the potential leakage risk of liquid electrolytes. Substitution of liquid electrolytes with solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) is an effective strategy to relieve or even solve these problems. This review focuses on the most crucial issues of the solid-state Li–S battery (SSLSB) and exhibits the recent progress in these fields. SSEs applicable in the Li–S battery including inorganic glassy ceramics and ceramics, organic polymers, and inorganic–organic hybrid electrolytes are reviewed. Then, the establishment of Li-ion pathways inside the cathode is discussed in detail. We also probe into the unique polysulfide chemistry of the Li–S battery and expound our opinions. Finally, conclusions and perspectives are outlined for the further development of SSLSBs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur battery is regarded as one of the promising next-generation energy storage to electrical and portable devices thanks to its extremely high theoretical capacity, energy density, good environmental protection and low cost. However, the practical application of lithium-sulfur battery is still greatly impeded by the low Coulombic efficiency and the short lifespan, which is mainly attributed to the polysulfide shuttle and the uncontrollable lithium dendrite growth. Suppressing the growth of the lithium dendrite and hindering the notorious reaction between soluble polysulfides and lithium are extremely critical not only to a safe and efficient lithium anode, but also to the high-capacity lithium-sulfur battery. A comprehensive review of various strategies for strengthening the anode stability of lithium-sulfur battery is presented in this paper, including modifying the electrolyte and current collector, employing artificial protection films and finding alternative anodes to replace the lithium anode. The effects of different selections and the resulting properties of the anodes on the overall lithium-sulfur battery performance are discussed. The current research challenges and future perspectives associated with lithium-sulfur battery anode are also discussed.

Abstract:This overview details the recently recognized importance of strong chemical interactions between sulfur host materials and lithium polysulfides/sulfide to improve the performance of Li-S batteries, especially with respect to cycle life. Sulfur hosts consisting of: functionally modified surfaces, metal oxides and carbides that rely on either polar interactions or the thiosulfate mechanism for sulfide binding, metal-organic frameworks that exhibit Lewis-acid behavior, and functional polymers are reviewed. We summarize a variety of studies that explore the nature and strength of the interaction of these materials with polysulfides and its effect on cycle life, showing that capacity fading is reduced to as low as 0.03% per cycle with effective functional cathode host surfaces.

Abstract:In recent years there has been a major interest in developing all solid state batteries, for the sake of safety (issues due to toxic and flammable organic liquid electrolytes are well known) as well as of high energy density \cite{SCHNELL2018160,Zheng2018}. Side by side to experimental investigations, computational simulations \cite{GrazioliEtAlCM2016} unveil the several physics that interconnect at different scales \cite{LiMonroeARCBM2020} during battery operations. %Several advanced mathematical models have therefore been published \cite{bistriM2020}. We propose herein a new advanced model, which is multiscale compatible and fully three dimensional in nature. Furthermore, we review some classical or inspiring models, highlighting the conceptual evolutions that are ultimately collected in our work. The model is validated against experimental evidences of a Li/LiPON/LiCoO$_2$ thin film battery published in \cite{Danilovetal2011}.

Abstract:Elemental sulfur has been extensively investigated as a promising candidate of cathode material for next generation lithium secondary batteries. However, some troublesome issues, such as the low electric conductivity of sulfur(5×10-30S·cm-1) and the high solubility of lithium polysulfide intermediates in organic electrolytes, resulting in a low utilization of active material and a redox shuttling of dissolved polysulfide ions between the sulfur cathode and the lithium anode, which eventually leads to a deposition of insoluble and insulating Li2S2/Li2 S on the electrode surface and a fast reduction in the specific capacity. Notably, recent results indicate that carbon materials have been regarded as the ideal matrix for sulfur to improve the discharge capacity and cycling performance of lithium-sulfur batteries. In this review, recent development of carbon materials for lithium sulfur batteries is summarized and the prospect on sulfur/carbon composites cathode is discussed.
