Abstract:In this work, the green trivalent chromium coating on 6063 aluminum alloy surface was made and studied by means of trivalent chromate compound (KCr(SO4)2) as inhibitor. The coating was evaluated in 3.5 wt.% NaCl at room temperature using polarization curve, AC impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that the trivalent chromium compounds treated surface presents better corrosion behavior in chloride media than the original material surface. The morphologies and composition and valence state of the coating were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The result indicates that the trivalent chromium chemical conversion coating was made on aluminum alloy surface.

Abstract:In this paper, the sustainable Ce-Mn chemical conversion coating was fabricated on 6063 aluminium alloy by means of Ce(NO3)3 and KMnO4 as the inhibitors and NaF as the accelerator. The morphologies, composition and valence state of the coating were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The results indicated that the Ce-Mn conversion coating was formed. The anticorrosion of the coating was evaluated in 3.5 wt.% NaCl aqueous solution at room temperature by using polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It indicated that the treated surface presented better anticorrosion behavior in chloride media than on the original material surface. The corrosion resistance of Ce-Mn conversion coating was about equal to the trivalent chromium conversion coating.
Electrochemical corrosion resistance of aluminum alloy 6101 with cerium-based coatings in an alkaline environment

Abstract:Chromium-free materials as eco-friendly coatings with higher corrosion resistance are crucial in various industrial processes. Herein, we report the deposition of cerium-based conversion, a chromium-free, eco-friendly chemical conversion coating for aluminum alloy 6101, by the dip coating method. Immersion in cerium salt precursors assisted with hydrogen peroxide was performed for the deposition of cerium-based conversion coatings on aluminum alloy 6101 at different bathing temperatures. The electrochemical corrosion behavior was assessed in an alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide (pH 11), including mass loss measurements, free corrosion risk, polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction and photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that the coatings were composed of Ce (III) and Ce (IV) oxides. Surface modifications and surface degradation of the coating and substrate after immersion in corrosive media were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, energy dispersive scanning analysis demonstrated the elemental composition before and after corrosion of the cerium salt conversion-based coating. The results demonstrated that selectively deposited cerium-based conversion coatings improved the corrosion resistance by up to 96% in a strong corrosive alkaline media.

Abstract:The influence of five variables (i.e. deposition temperature, time, bath pH, and concentrations of Cr3+ compound (KCr(SO4)2) and H3PO4) on the preparation of Cr3+ coating on Al 6063 alloy was investigated using AC impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3.5 wt% NaCl. The optimal conditions were determined by AC impedance spectroscopy. The results indicated that the formation and quality of the coating were very sensitive to the deposition bath pH. A mechanism was proposed to explain the results. A simple model was derived and experimentally tested in terms of an equivalent circuit. Good agreement was found between the model predictions and the experimental results. The morphologies of the coated and uncoated electrodes were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the results also support the proposed surface model.

Abstract:A serial of composite coatings produced by combination of cerium sol-gel coatings and cerium conversion layers has been developed in this work: (1) sol-gel coating sealed by conversion coating; (2) sol-gel coating sealed by low-density sol; (3) conversion coating thickened by sol-gel coating. For both sol-gel coatings and conversion coatings, cerium chloride heptahydrate (CeCl3·7H2O) was used as cerium source. In order to evaluate the anti-corrosion properties of these composite coatings, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and salt spray test (SST) were employed as the assessing method. Furthermore, the surface morphology of these composite coatings was characterized by SEM observation. The EIS and SST results thus obtained showed that the anti-corrosion properties of the composite coating (1) had been remarkably improved compared to the any single layer of sol-gel coating or conversion coating. Furthermore, the SEM observation revealed that the morphology of that composite coating was uniform and homogeneous, which may explicate the superior corrosion-resistant performance obtained by the composite coating (1). By contrast, other composite coatings including composite coating (2) and (3) were not as good as composite coating (1) in corrosion resistance, which could be attributed to cracks and heterogeneous microstructure existing on the surface of these composite coatings.

Abstract:This paper aims to develop a chromium‐free chemical conversion coating with good corrosion resistance. A novel chemical conversion coating was prepared on 6061 aluminum alloy by dipping in the treatment solution containing titanium/zirconium based‐ions and sodium metaphosphate and cerium nitrate hexahydrate as additives. The morphology and composition of the conversion coatings were observed by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy. The microarea structure of conversion coatings at different formation stages was analyzed by electron probe microanalyzer. The electrochemical polarization curve revealed that the corrosion potential of the conversion coating was −0.577 V and the corrosion current density was 0.1148 μA/cm2. The equivalent circuit fitted by AC impedance showed that the film resistance reaches 68,140 Ω. The formation of coating preferentially grows on the Al (Fe) Si intermetallic to form oxides of Ti and Zr; then TiO2 formed by a higher concentration of Ti4+ gradually covered ZrO2. Ce3+ could adsorb on the intermetallic compound, the hydrolysis of which causes the local pH of the solution to decrease and promotes the aluminum alloy dissolved.

Abstract:The anticorrosion properties of cerium and praseodymium based chemical conversion coatings deposited on AA6061-T6 were evaluated in NaCl 0.01 M aqueous solution at room temperature using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Potentiodynamic Polarization (PDP). Coatings microstructure and morphology were observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Coatings compositions were characterized by Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX). The obtained results showed that: 1) Cerium sulphate based coatings possess superior resistance to localized corrosion in comparison to the praseodymium nitrate based ones; 2) One minute of immersion shows good anticorrosive properties of the Ce2(SO4)3 based coatings; 3) Post-deposition phosphate treatment notably improves the anticorrosive behavior and 4) Hydrogen peroxide addition to the cerium based formulation accelerates the coating formation.
Corrosion resistance of anodically oxidized LY12 aluminum alloy after modification with cerium nitrate and silane

Abstract:An anodic oxidation film was prepared on the surface of LY12 aluminum alloy in a sulfuric acid solution,and then sealed with γ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane(γ-GPTMS) and tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS) hybrid sol with cerium(III) ions as corrosion inhibitor.The anodic oxidation film adsorbed Ce3+ was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).The long-term corrosion resistance of anodically oxidized aluminum alloy electrode after modification with cerium nitrate and silane hybrid sol was studied by polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) in 3.5wt% NaCl solution at 25 °C.Results revealed that the long-term corrosion resistance of the anodic oxidation film sealed with silane hybrid sol was increased greatly.The different ways of adding Ce(III) to the anodic oxidation film sealed by silane hybrid sol lead to a evident difference in long-term corrosion resistance.The corrosion resistance of the anodic oxidation film after adsorption with Ce(III) followed by sealing with silane hybrid sol is significantly higher than that of the film sealed by Ce-doped silane hybrid sol.

Abstract:With different means of soaking treatment, simple cerium conversion coating, KH560 silane conversion coating, cerium silane conversion coating and silane cerium conversion coating are formulated. SEM, EDS, Tafel and EIS measurements were adopted as the analysis approaches, and organic resin is coated on the conversion coating surface for the salt spray test, so as to check mainly how much the corrosion resistant capabilities could be improved if conversion coating is applied to the magnesium alloy. The result shows that the cerium silane conversion coating and silane cerium conversion coating have a higher self-corrosion potential, lower corrosion current density, improve the binding force between the organic coating and magnesium alloy matrix more effectively, thus enhance dramatically the corrosion resistant protection capabilities for the whole coating applied on the magnesium alloy matrix.

Abstract:The novel cerium based conversion (CeC) treatment was performed on 2A14-T3511 aluminum alloy micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings with thickness of 15 μm and 30 μm, respectively. The sealing effect of CeC treatment on MAO coatings and the chemical composition of the sealant were characterized. The influence of coating structure on the deposition of cerium compounds was systematically discussed. Additionally, long-term corrosion behavior was investigated using electrochemical methods. The results showed that CeC treatment significantly improved the long-term corrosion protection of MAO coatings. This is attributed to the physical sealing and chemical corrosion inhibition of the Ce based deposits.

Abstract:Corrosion behavior of Ce conversion coatings on Al6061/SiCp composites was examined by optical microscope and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that corrosion of coatings in NaCl solution was initiated by pitting whose substrate was concentrated with SiC particles. According to the equivalent circuit of pitting model illustrated by Mansfeld, pitting growth of Ce conversion coatings was examined by employing electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Warberg impedance could be ignored under the circumstance of short term exposing Ce conversion coatings to NaCl solution, this led to investigate the pitting growth by simplifying the equivalent circuit.

Abstract:Trivalent chromium process conversion coating is considered to be the ideal alternative to traditional chromate conversion coating due to its high corrosion resistance and low toxicity. However, achieving a high corrosion resistance trivalent chromium conversion coating on 2xxx aluminum alloys has been a great challenge. Herein, based on a newly developed trivalent chromium conversion solution (CN patent, ZL 202210804263.2), the effect of alkaline etching on the formation behavior and corrosion resistance of the coating on AA2024-T351 aluminum alloy was investigated. It was found that under the same conditions, the mechanically polished sample and the sample alkaline etched for 30 s showed the highest corrosion resistance. When the alkaline etching time was too short or too long, the corrosion resistance of the coating deteriorated. This is ascribed to changes in the surface microstructure of the alloy during alkaline etching, i.e., reduced number of intermetallic particles and formation of a copper enrichment layer. Reducing the number of intermetallic particles on the alloy surface is beneficial for uniform growth of the coating. However, the copper enrichment layer participated in formation of the coating, resulting in doping of copper species in the coating, which is detrimental to the corrosion resistance of the coating.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, Ahead of Print. A new kind Al-6061/SiC/Al2O3 hybrid composite was prepared with traces amount of cerium oxide and its corrosion performance was evaluated by potentio-dynamic polarization electrochemical method. A new kind of intermetallic (γ-phase) has been observed in the microstructure with higher content of cerium oxide and Al elements. The corrosion resistance of Al-6061 alloy improved with addition of cerium oxide and this improvement could attribute to depression of the micro-galvanic couples. The corrosion rates were observed as 0.16 and 0.034 mpy corresponding to 3.5 and 2.5 wt% of NaCl corresponding to 2.5 wt% of cerium oxide. Moreover, the formation of cerium oxide and Al enrichment film over the surface of hybrid composites was also found to be main key factor for the inhibition of corrosion resistance. Another key factor that inhibits the further corrosion was observed as hydrophobicity between the aluminium liquid matrix and Al2O3/SiC reinforcement after incorporation of cerium oxide. Improvement in hydrophobicity of composites with Al2O3/SiC is due to increase in contact angle up to 100.78° after addition of 2.5 wt% cerium oxide. Micro-hardness and impact strength of the hybrid composites improved significantly after addition of traces amount of REOs from 0.5 to 2.5 wt%.

Abstract:The ceria coating was studied as an efficient alternative to the chromate protective coating of aluminum alloys. The environmentally friendly inhibitor of cerium ion was incorporated into the surface coating using Ce(NO3)3 as precursor via a sol–gel route. The coatings were analyzed with FESEM and EDS. The anticorrosion performance evaluation of the coatings was carried out using electrochemical methods and full immersion experiments. Under the conditions of surface pretreatment with 15 wt% NaOH solution for 20 s, a sol reaction time of 2 h and 3–5 times of dip-coating, the uniform ceria coatings with low defect and barrier were successfully synthesized. After the full immersion process, pitting holes containing copper-rich phases were detected on the surface of the uncoated sample. In contrast, such holes were not observed on the coated sample. Furthermore, the Icorr values of the coated samples were smaller than that of the uncoated one, which confirms that the coatings provide a considerable protection barrier and promote the anticorrosion performance of aluminum alloys.

Abstract:The corrosion-protective influence of eco-friendly ceria conversion coatings deposited on Al-1050 alloy, additionally treated in mixed NaH2PO4 and Ca(NO3)2 solution, was studied. The main aim of this work was to investigate how the obtained mixed systems of coatings eliminates the negative role of cracks and pores on the surface formed after deposition only of ceria coating. For this purpose, the growth structure, main components and corrosion resistance of the so formed protective systems were investigated by SEM, EDS, XRD, XPS and electrochemical (PDP, Rp, etc.) methods. The results obtained show that the basic components of the conversion layers (before and after exposure in model corrosion media) are characterized by Al2O3, Al(OH)3, CePO4 and Ca5(PO4)3(OH). Based on these results, the optimal conditions of immersion treatment(s) of Al substrate are established. At these regimes, the relationship of co-deposited Ce3+, PO43+ and Ca2+-containing components of the conversion layers determine the maximum values of their polarization resistance-a basic criterion for corrosion protection of Al. This effect is related to the formation of fill out of the defects of the conversion coatings and additional Ca5(PO4)3(OH), CePO4 AlPO4 and Al(OH)3 deposits, leading to the decrease of the corrosion rate.

Abstract:Ill order to develop an environmental friendly surface coating technolony for magnesium, a chrome-free Ce-based process to form a conversion coating on AZ91 magnesum alloy was investigated. The open circuit potential and polarization curves were used to research AZ91 electro-chemical behavior in Ce(NO3)(3) +H2O2 solution. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was chosen to evaluate corrosion resistance due to it's low effect oil electrochemical test system for getting high reproduction restut. The effects of treatment time, temperature of electrolyte, concentration of Ce(NO3)(3) and accelerant concentration on corrosion resistance were summarized, while an optimized technology was achieved, 0.02 mol/L Ce(NO3)(3), 4 mL/J. accelerant at 35 degrees C for 35 min. The results indicated that the chemical conversion coating formed ill optimized technology presented yellow and impact, surface by naked eye, while took oil micro cracks oil the outer layer. The content of Cc ill the surface layer is high. Tafel plots indicated that conversion coating restrained the anodic and cathodic reaction on the interface. while the corrosion potential raised anodic 250 mV and corrosion current density decreased about 100 times. EIS results of optimal coating in NaCl solution for 96 h also indicated that the conversion coating protect the AZ91 magnesium alloy effectively in the first 60 h.
The Preparation, Corrosion Resistance and Formation Mechanism of a New-Type Mo-Based Composite Conversion Coating on 6061 Aluminum Alloy

Abstract:This paper aims to explore a new-type Mo-based composite conversion coating on 6061 aluminum alloy, systematically evaluate its corrosion resistance, and further reveal the formation mechanism. The effects of pH, conversion time (CTI) and H2ZrF6 content on the corrosion resistance were determined by the dropping test and electrochemical tests, and the average corrosion rate (ACR) in neutral 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution under different temperatures was calculated by the immersion test. The micro-morphology and phase compositions were systematically investigated by SEM, EDS and XPS. The results showed that the optimal pH and CTI were 4.5 and 12 min respectively, and the most suitable addition amount of H2ZrF6 was 1.2 mL/L. The micro-morphology of the Mo/Ti/Zr conversion coating (MoTiZrCC) under the best conversion condition was relatively smooth and dense, and its phase compositions mainly consisted of MoO3, Mo2O5, TiO2, ZrO2 and Al2O3. The MoTiZrCC could significantly improve corrosion resistance with the lower icorr and higher Rp, and the ACR of the MoTiZrCC could be reduced to 16.7% of the Al alloy matrix. Additionally, based on the above results, the formation mechanism for the MoTiZrCC was logically deduced.

Abstract:With the increasing application scope of aluminum alloys in the marine field, exploring the surface anti-corrosion technologies of aluminum alloys is becoming more and more important. In current industries, thermal spraying is generally used to prepare Al Zn coatings for surface protection. In this paper, Al Zn coating and Al-Zn-Ce coating were prepared by flame spraying technology, and the effects of adding rare earth element Ce on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of Al Zn coating were systematically studied by using OM, SEM , XPS, LCSM and electrochemical corrosion tests. The results show that the addition of Ce is conducive to promoting the mobility and solidification shrinkage of Al Zn alloy melt, thereby increasing the density of the coating while decreasing porosity and roughness. Moreover, adding Ce improves the hardness and wear resistance of the AlZn coating. During immersion, adding a trace of Ce to the AlZn coating will affect the passivation process and the formation of the passivation film, endowing the coating with a strong passivation ability and thus improving the corrosion resistance of the coating.

Abstract:The reliable and durable corrosion protection of commercially attractive aluminum alloys like AA2024-T3 is the subject of world-wide intensive scientific research. Thus, the quality of the preliminary treatments and the coating primers is of key importance in this field. In this aspect, Anodic Aluminum Oxides (AAO) and Cerium Conversion Coatings (CeCC) appear to be the most perspective approaches for the formation of coating primers. The present systematic study offers results of a comparative elucidation of the properties of CeCC deposited under different regimes on AAO formed on the AA2024-T3 aircraft alloy. The formation of CeCC was performed either spontaneously, or under different electrochemical regimes. The samples were subjected to analyses that included: (i) preliminary color characterization and contact angle measurements, (ii) surface observations by optical metallographic (OMM) and scanning electron (SEM) microscopy, (iii) element distribution by means of Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray Photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopy and (iv) corrosion tests. The latter were performed by applying Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Potentiodynamic Scanning (PDS) after 24 h of exposure to a 3.5% NaCl model corrosive medium (MCM). For completeness, the experiments were extended to 672 h of exposure for the samples with superior barrier ability. The analysis of results obtained from the employed analytical techniques has revealed that spontaneous and cathodic depositions at low current densities are suitable for formation of uniform CeCC layers. Conversely, the application of higher current densities and alternating current (AC) or anodic deposition regimes had adverse effects.
