Abstract:Anthurium belongs to family Araceae and is highly praised flowering plant for its colourful long lasting unique flower and shining foliage. It is also an excellent plant for interior and as cut flower, especially for flower arrangement. The most suitable part of anthurium is modification of the leaf and botanically known as ‘spathe’. Heart shaped spathe emerges on the long flower stalk with a spadix. This plant blooms almost continuously under suitable conditions. It is epiphytic in nature with climbing, creeping and arboreous stems including many aerial roots that aid in taping water and nourishment. Quality and productivity of anthurium flowers depends on the growing medium. Most of the anthurium growers prepare own their growing media, but they do not know that the low productivity and quality might come from an poor potting mixture that they are using. One of the most important components of anthurium cultivation is the choice of growing substrate or medium. It is known to grow best in a well aerated medium with good water retention capacity and drainage. A good medium needs to be able to anchor the roots and stems so that the plant will not topple over as it grows larger, yet it should provide sufficient moisture, nutrient and aeration to the plant. The objective of this review is to present a summary of the influence of various growing medium on the growth, flowering, productivity and quality of anthurium grown in protected conditions. The results from the literature prove that the productivity of anthurium tends to be more in those plants which grown in different growing medium compared to soil grown plants.

Abstract:The present study was carried out at the Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, College of Agriculture, Vellayani, Kerala Agricultural University, during 2022-23 with an aim to evaluate the effect of foliar application of different biostimulants on growth, yield, and flowering attributes of Anthurium under naturally ventilated polyhouse condition. The experiment was laid out in CRD with ten replications. There were fifteen treatments including the control. Fertilizers and manures were applied as per the Package of Practices Recommendations of Kerala Agricultural University (i.e., application of cow dung supernatant + 2 g L-119:19:19 weekly once) to all the treatments including the control (T1). In addition, for treatments T2 to T15, different biostimulants were applied as foliar sprays either alone or in combination fortnightly or monthly as per the treatment specifications. Being a popular cut flower, improvement in floral attributes is very much valued in Anthurium. The study concluded that the treatment T8 i.e., application of cow dung supernatant and 2 g L-119:19:19 weekly once as foliar spray along with foliar application of 2% humic acid - fulvic acid mixture and 100 mg L-1 salicylic acid at fortnightly intervals exhibited superior values for stalk length, spathe length, spathe width, number of flowers, flower longevity and vase life and it also recorded earliest flower bud initiation. The results revealed that growth and floral attributes of Anthurium can be improved through the foliar application of treatment T8.

Abstract:In order to provide reference for further know heat-resistance mechanism as well as the selection of hybrid breeding parent.Taking Royal champion,Arebo,Sierra,Pink champion as materials,researching the effect of 39 ℃ on physiological property and comparing heat resistance of four potted cultivars of Anthurium andraeanum. Measuring ten of the leaves such as relative electric conductivity,relative water content,chlorophyll content and pro-tective enzyme activity under different stress times,we analyzed the changes of every indicator along with stress times.Results showed that relative electric conductivity and MDA content were on the rise,relate water content was on the down.Proline content,soluble protein content and there protective enzyme activity were rising then downing, content of chlorophyll and carotenoid were different change trend.Comprehensive analyze the heat-resistance of ten cultivars trough the change trend of ten physiological indexes and value after 48 hours,Royal champion and Arebo were strong heat resistance,Sierra and Pink champion were poor heat resistance,this conclusion is consistent with the performance in actual production.
Postharvest Spectral Light Composition Affects Chilling Injury in Anthurium Cut Flowers

Abstract:The effect of the lighting environment during postharvest storage of ornamentals has largely been neglected in previous research. Anthurium is a cold-sensitive species originating from tropical climates and is widely cultivated all around the world for its colorful spathes. To investigate the effects of light spectrum on the performance of Anthurium cut flowers under cold storage, two cultivars [Calore (red spathe) and Angel (withe spathe)] were placed at low temperature (4°C), either in darkness (D) or under different light spectra [red (R), blue (B), 70:30% red:blue (RB), and white (W)] at an intensity of 125 µmol.m-2.s-1. In both cultivars, the longest and shortest vase lives were observed in spathes exposed to the R and B spectra, respectively. In both cultivars, electrolyte leakage (EL) of spathe was highest under the B and W spectra and lowest under the R spectrum. The highest rate of flower water loss from the spathes was observed under the B-containing light spectra, whereas the lowest rate of water loss was observed in D and under the R spectrum. Negative correlations were observed between EL and vase life and between anthocyanin concentration and EL for both Anthurium cultivars. A positive correlation was found between anthocyanin concentration and vase life. For both Anthurium cultivars, spectral light composition with higher percentage of B resulted in higher EL and as a result shorter vase life in cut flowers under cold storage condition. The negative effect of the B light spectrum on vase life of Anthurium can be explained through its effect on water loss and on oxidative stress and membrane integrity. The quality of Anthurium cut flowers should benefit from environments with restricted B light spectrum during postharvest handling.

Abstract:Sustainable agriculture has become a concern, due to the pressures of the “energy crisis” and issues of “environmental protection”. The use of organic fertilizer made from agricultural waste regenerates natural resources and reduces the consumption of fossil energy as well as phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) deposits. There is scant information available concerning the use of organic fertilizer as the sole source of nutrients in flower production, especially in the cultivation of flowers in a soilless condition. The objective of this study was to develop an organic fertilization management system to replace the chemical fertilization management of the cut flower production of Anthurium andreanum Lind. cultivated under soilless conditions. Four fertilization treatments were carried out consisting of two chemical fertilizers [controlled release fertilizer (CRF) and a chemical nutrient solution (CNS)], and two organic fertilizers [pea and rice hull compost (PRHC) and cattle dung with tea leaf residue compost (CDTC)]. The effects of the various fertilizations on A. andreanum were evaluated based on plant growth, nutrient uptake, and cut flower quality during the 1-year experimental period. The results show that the growth, yield, and cut flower quality of plants receiving PRHC were the same as those receiving CNS and CRF, indicating that PRHC can substitute for CRF and CNS as a nutrient source for cut flower production of A. andreanum cultivated in soilless condition. The plants that received the CNS and PRHC treatments had a significantly increased leaf number and new leaf growth area than those that received the CRF and CDTC treatments. The plants receiving the CDTC showed the lowest increase in leaf area and number of flowers. The retardant growth of plants treated with CDTC has been explained as being due to less carbon (C) being assimilated, most likely as the result of an insufficient supply of nitrogen (N) and manganese (Mn) toxicity. The petiole and peduncle length of the plants receiving the CRF were the shortest, which might be due to the low level of potassium (K) accompanying the magnesium (Mg) deficiency. Even though there were significant differences in the N and K concentrations of the plants among the different treatments, no significant differences were observed in the cut flower quality. In short, the organic fertilizer PRHC can meet the nutrient requirements of A. andreanum cultivation for the cut flower production under soilless conditions.

Abstract:Anthurium (Anthurium spp.) is an ornamental that is widely appreciated around the world, primarily for its showy and colorful spadix. A successful tissue culture protocol for anthurium would allow for the mass clonal propagation of this plant to serve the floriculture pot-plant and cut-flower markets. Success has been achieved in anthurium tissue culture using several explant types, and the morphological and cytogenetic stability of such regenerants has also been tested. This review provides a detailed analysis of the conditions required for the successful culture of anthuriums in vitro. Besides micropropagation, this review also highlights selected current applications of in vitro anthurium biotechnology such as anther culture, polyploidy production, genetic transformation, and their importance in breeding work, synthetic seed technology and cryopreservation.

Abstract:Fresh-cut flowers are considered to be one of the most delicate and challenging commercial crops. It is important to take into consideration how to minimize loss during storage and transportation when preserving cut flowers. Many impinging (bad effect) forces can interact to shorten the flowers' vase life. In the flower industry, effective methods need to be developed to extend freshly cut flowers' life. Fresh-cut flowers' vase life can be shortened by a variety of interlocking causes. The flower industry must develop new techniques to extend the flowers' vase lifespan. This review provides comprehensive, up-to-date information on classical, modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), and controlled atmosphere packaging (CAP) displays. According to this review, a promising packaging technique for fresh flowers can be achieved through smart packaging. A smart package is one that incorporates new technology to increase its functionality. This combines active packaging, nanotechnology, and intelligence. This technology makes it easier to keep an eye on the environmental variables that exist around the packaged flowers to enhance their quality. This article offers a comprehensive overview of creative flower-saving packaging ideas that reduce flower losses and assist growers in handling more effectively their flower inventory. To guarantee the quality of flowers throughout the marketing chain, innovative packaging techniques and advanced packaging technologies should be adopted to understand various package performances. This will provide the consumer with cut flowers of standard quality. Furthermore, sustainable packaging is achieved with circular packaging. We can significantly reduce packaging waste's environmental impact by designing reused or recyclable packaging.

In vitro propagation of three commercial cut flower cultivars of Anthurium andraeanum Hort

Abstract:In vitro propagation of Anthurium andraeanum Hort. cut flower cultivars viz. Lima White, Tropical White and Tropical Red through organogenesis using mature plant derived leaf explants was established on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium fortified with different growth regulators. Cultivar, stage and different regions of the source leaf, and type of growth regulators significantly influenced callus induction. Explants from folded brown leaves were superior in induction of callus. Half strength MS medium fortified with 0.88 microM of benzyiadenine (BA), 0.9 microM of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 0.46 microM of kinetin (Kn) at pH 5.5 was most effective for callus induction. Transfer of callus to medium with 0.54 microM of NAA in place of 2,4-D induced higher number of shoots. Subsequent cultures displayed enhanced rate of shoot initiation and multiplication. Transfer of shoots onto half strength MS medium supplemented with 0.54 microM of NAA favoured rooting of shoots. Cultivar Tropical White was superior in callus, shoot and root induction compared to Lima White and Tropical Red. Plantlets after acclimation in greenhouse were transferred to net-house, that exhibited ninety seven per cent survival. Plants flowered normally between 12 and 15 months and were morphologically similar to that of the mother plants.

Abstract:The study investigates the efficacy of plasma-activated water (PAW) in preserving green chillies (jalapeño and pusa jwala) and compared it with various household fruits and vegetables cleaners' solutions. PAW was prepared using a pencil plasma jet with air as the plasma forming gas. The results of visual analysis revealed that PAW-treated chillies maintain their fresh appearance even after 21 days, exhibiting significantly lower spoilage compared to control (ultrapure milli-Q water) and fruits and vegetables cleaners' solutions. PAW demonstrated antimicrobial properties, effectively reducing microbial growth and spoilage on chillies over the storage period. Physical attributes, such as weight loss and firmness, are evaluated. It has been observed that PAW-treated chillies exhibit lower weight loss and higher firmness, indicating better membrane integrity and moisture retention. Microbial resistance was notably higher in PAW-treated chillies compared to control and when cleaning solutions were used. CIELAB color analysis revealed that PAW-treated chillies retain greenness, and color, freshness, outperforming control and cleaners. Sensory evaluation, including visual inspection, smell, taste, and touch, consistently favored PAW-treated chillies, emphasizing their superiority in terms of enhancement in shelf-life. Biochemical analysis revealed that PAW-treated chillies either maintain or show enhancement in nutritional attributes such as soluble sugar, protein, and ascorbic acid concentrations. Phenol concentration (antioxidant activity) remained stable across treatments. Overall, the study underscores the positive impact of PAW treatment on preserving the membrane integrity, antimicrobial resistance, sensory quality, and nutritional attributes of green chillies, making PAW an alternative for extending their shelf life.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The present studies were undertaken to investigate the effect of bioprotectant, plant based chemical like Salicylic acid and silicon based nutrient Potassium silicate against the anthracnose or ripe fruit rot of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) incited by Colletotrichum capsici (Sydow.) Butler and Bisby in chilli var. K2. The chilli anthracnose disease susceptible variety Kovilpatti-2 (K2) grown in pots and field trial were used for the study. The plants were given artificial inoculation by spraying the spore suspensions after pinpricking the fruits with adequate spore load at 90-days after transplanting for fruit rot incidence assessment. The crop was maintained in a poly house with frequent spraying of water to provide adequate moisture and relative humidity to enable successful infection by the pathogen. Three replications for each treatment and a control were maintained. The fungicide mancozeb @ 0.25 per cent was used for comparison and the standard agronomic practices as recommended by the State Agricultural Department were followed. The plant activator and silicon-based nutrient were sprayed as individual as well as combined approach manner. Seed treatment with Pseudomonas fluorescens @ 10 g/kg of seeds in all the treatments except comparison fungicide and control treatments. Among the various treatments, seed treatment with Bio protectant, foliar application of Salicylic acid @ 50 ppm on 40 days after transplanting (40 DAT) and foliar application of Potassium silicate @ 3 % on 60 DAT recorded the minimum disease incidence and increased fruit length, fruit weight, fruit per plant, branches per plant, plant height and germination percentage when compared to control and Comparison fungicide Mancozeb. The activity of plant defense enzymes like Peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and Phenylalanine ammonia lyase increased up to 5th day of sampling in plants treated with Bio-protectant, resistance inducing chemical along with potassium silicate and challenged inoculated with the test pathogen. Also, the same treatment significantly decreased the disease severity and increased the growth and yield parameters when compared to control and comparison fungicide under the field trials.

Abstract:The global floriculture market is expected to reach US$41.1 billion by 2027 at a CAGR of 5% over the analysis period 2020-2027; on the year 2020, the recorded market value in this trade was US$29.2 billion. The florists mainly use Anthurium andraeanum flowers in fashionable bouquets and floral arrangements because of their beautiful, attractive bright colored eye-catching spathe, candle-like spadix, prolonged vase life, etc. The cut flower industry always seeks elite cultivars and new hybrids of A. andraeanum, that in turn depend on the availability of large numbers of clonal planting propagules. In vitro somatic embryogenesis is an important technique for large-scale clonal propagation, development of transgenic plants, creation of new variety by somaclonal variation, mutagenesis on in vitro plants, and germplasm preservation for future use. Here, we describe the protocol of somatic embryogenesis of Anthurium andraeanum cv. Cancan, an important commercial cultivated variety. The protocol has been optimized by using 4 different types of culture media which are used during embryogenic callus induction, multiplication of callus, induction of somatic embryogenesis, and maturation plus conversion of embryos into plantlets. The protocol outlines the detailed methods from mother plant procurement to hardening of micro plants that is ready to transfer in the field and it can be used for large-scale commercial propagation.

Abstract:Abstract Disinfection of plant material is the most important step of the tissue culture protocol. In this process, an attempt is made to eliminate microbial contaminants from the surface and interior of plant material, thus giving the explant a fighting chance at survival in vitro. Initial cultures of Anthurium species and cultivars, which are usually established from ex vitro material grown in a greenhouse, pots or in the field, easily contaminate the in vitro milieu. This review highlights the differences in disinfection protocols that exist for different species or cultivars of Anthurium. The protocol needs to be adjusted based on the material used: spadices, spathes, seeds, leaves, or roots. Regrettably, most of the currently published protocols, derived from a literature that spans over 100 published papers, have numerous weaknesses and flaws in the information provided pertaining to disinfection and infection levels. Advice for future Anthurium researchers should thus be followed cautiously.
