Abstract:Container water gardens are the miniature replicas of pools, cascades spillways and fountains with various containers and landscape aquatic plants. It is also regarded as one of the important constitutes of water garden. The two basic styles of container water garden, including static water and moving water were indicated with many active examples. Some issues for creating container water garden such as the cite-choosing, container selection, planting design, as well as the planting method and maintenance were concerned in the paper. The creative water gardens will be enjoyed more popularly and used more widely in the further water gardening.

Abstract:Adverse environmental stresses such as drought and low or high temperature will inhibit seed emergence and delay seedling establishment, resulting in significant yield reduction and poor seed quality. Beneficial chemicals for plant growth, such as fungicides, insecticides, fertilizers, and growth promoters, are usually delivered through seed-coating technology to protect seeds from diseases, pests, environmental stresses, and to enhance field seedling establishment. However, traditional seed-coating agents might not be able to meet the requirements due to their low efficiency. Now high polymer materials have been got lots of attention in many research fields, and here in present chapter we want to give a new angle of view about how to apply the high polymer materials in agriculture research to develop "intelligent" coating agents to make the traditional seed-coating agents more efficient.

Abstract:This review paper describes a novel approach to plant cultivation under soil-less culture. At present, global climate change is expected to raise the risk of frequent drought. Agriculture is in a phase of major change around the world and dealing with serious problems. In future, it would be difficult task to provide a fresh and clean food supply for the fast-growing population using traditional agriculture. Under such circumstances, the soil-less cultivation is the alternative technology to adapt effectively. The soil-less system associated with the Hydroponic and Aeroponics system. In the aeroponics system, plant roots are hanging in the artificially provided plastic holder and foam material replacement of the soil under controlled conditions. The roots are allowed to dangle freely and openly in the air. However, the nutrient rich-water deliver with atomization nozzles. The nozzles create a fine spray mist of different droplet size at intermittently or continuously. This review concludes that aeroponics system is considered the best plant growing method for food security and sustainable development. The system has shown some promising returns in various countries and recommended as the most efficient, useful, significant, economical and convenient plant growing system then soil and other soil-less methods.

Abstract:Most seedlings of crops are produced in solar greenhouse or nursery, from which some problems about energy waste and environment pollution arise. This study aims at investigating the characteristics and effect of an environmental friendly type seedling breeding system. The results demonstrate that crops can grow with a short period and little pollution in the new seedling breeding system with total manpower controllable environment that is not influenced by geography, climate and other natural conditions. By multilayer, nonplanar seedling breeding and annual batches arrangement, utilization ratio of unit area land and seedlings yield can be improved for several times and even more than 10 times. Conclusions can be obtained from the tomato seedling breeding experiments: (1) each growth index of tomato seedlings that are under the conditions of 291μmol/m2s artificial illumination intensity is remarkably better than those produced in greenhouse with natural lights. (2) The environment of the seedling breeding system can be accurately controlled. The segmented temperature changed management can be applied according to the photosynthetic characteristics of plants, and not affected by the outside environment, which makes each growth index of tomato seedling constant in different seasons. The seedlings thus grow strong and can achieve the level of commodity seedlings after 20–30 days. (3) The temperature and humidity environment of the seedling breeding system can be accurately controlled according to plants growth demands.

Abstract:The effects of nine media on the survival rate and growth situation of regenerated Rhododendron hybrids 'Donator' plantlets in tissue culture after transplantation were studied.The results showed that the survival rates of the plantlets grown in the media of peat and peat:perlite(V:V=1:1) were higher than that of those in the other seven media,making 95.4%and 94.4%respectively,and there was no significant difference between the two media.After being transplanted in these nine media,the stem length,length and width of the third to fifth leaves from top and fresh weight of per shoot of the plantlets in the peat medium were extremely different from those in the other media.A number of growth parameters of plantlets transplanted into the peat and peat '.perlite(V:V=1:1) media in the trial were better than those of the plantlets transplanted into the other seven media.

Abstract:The burgeoning population and climate change posing a challenge to meet the sufficient and quality food, fodder and fuel demand in 2050.The cultivable land is also shrinking due to industrialization and urbanization as the availability was 0.50 ha in 1960 which has come down at 0.25 ha. The continuous intensive agriculture led to poor soil health. The demand of food, fodder and fuel is ever rising with rise in population therefore; it is very difficult to sustain supply with present cultivation practices under climate change regime. To overcome this problem, soilless culture is one of the best alternatives. Soilless culture is a novel methodology for growing of crops or plants without soil by using growing media which can be solid, liquid, organic or inorganic material. One of the major advantages of soilless media is saving of water up to 85-90%, as water is recycled and provide better yield as compared to conventional cultivation with almost zero environmental pollution. Plug tray nursery raising using soilless medium is being done on commercial scale at many places. Research on Soilless cultivation is being carried out at Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Pusa, New Delhi since 2016. Hydroponic has been emerged as a new technique to grow plants in recent era. Aeroponics is one of the most successful and rapid methods of seed potato production in which large numbers of mini tubers can be produced in one generation which reduces time and cost. Plants grown in soil less culture are of superior quality with high yield, rich in nutrient content and rapid harvest as compared to conventional cultivation/soil. The growing conditions are generally regulated resultantly a robust resilient production system may be developed for continued supply of vegetables/fruits/flowers, it can synergistically add in total production.

Effects of New Compounds into Substrates on Seedling Qualities for Efficient Transplanting

Abstract:Automating vegetable seedling transplanting has led to labor-saving opportunities and improved productivity. Some changes in seedling agronomy are necessary for efficient transplanting. In this study, the local nursery substrates were added with the herbaceous peat, the sphagnum peat, and the coir peat, respectively. Effects of the new compound substrates were investigated on the seedling growth qualities and the root substrate strength. In the results, we found that the addition of three compound mediums significantly affected the physiochemical properties of the original substrates. Under the same conditions of cultivating seedlings, appropriate additions of new compounds promoted the seedling growth. Moreover, deficient or excessive additions inhibited the growing development of seedlings and their roots. The corresponding additions also improved the structural characteristics of the root lumps. Compared with the two other compounds, the nursery substrates added with the sphagnum peat were optimized in contribution to the seedling qualities and the root substrate strengths. As the local substrate and the sphagnum peat were mixed at a volume ratio of 2:1, the dry matter accumulation of seedlings was 2.18 times more than the original. Their root lumps had the best consolidation strength. This new compound of substrates may be an effective application for the necessary qualities of seedlings for automatic transplanting.
The Effect of Several Substitute Media of Soilless Culture on the Germination of Flower Seeds

Abstract:Discussed the posibility of sawdust,powder of peanut hull,powder of maize core etc.as soilless culture media.The effect of the different materials and extract on the germination and the growth of the radicle root of flower seeds were measured.The germination index(GI)were introduced into the experiment as the most important guide line.The results showed that under the cocoa nut coir,powder of peanut hull and sawdust conditions,most of the growing index of the flower seeds were close to or even better than the traditional peat moss cultural medias.The powder of peanut hull is a kind of widely applicable seeding substrates.The total phenolic acids contents of different materials were also tested in the experiment,the reason of holding back the germination was also analyzed primarily in the paper.

Abstract:The amount of irrigation and fertilization should be considered first for the production and standardization of high-quality H. syriacus L. seedlings using container seedlings. This study was conducted to investigate the optimal conditions suitable for container cultivation of hibiscus by analyzing growth and physiological responses according to the control of irrigation and fertilization. Therefore, in this study, H. syriacus L. for. Haeoreum (3-year-old hardwood cutting propagation), a fast-growing, was transplanted into a 40 L container. The irrigation amount per container was adjusted (0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 ton/yr/tree), and the amount of fertilizer applied (0, 69.0, 138.0 and 207.0 g/yr/tree). The growth rate according to the irrigation-fertilization treatment was higher in the 0.3 ton-138.0 g/yr/tree irrigation-fertilization treatment (p < 0.001). Total biomass yield and seedling quality index (SQI) were highest in the 0.3 ton-138.0 g/yr/tree irrigation-fertilization treatment (p < 0.001). The higher the fertilization concentration, the faster the flowering and the longer the flowering. The photosynthetic capacity of H. syriacus L. was reduced in bare root seedling cultivation and container-non-fertilized treatment. The chlorophyll fluorescence response was also affected by bare root cultivation and containerized seedling cultivation fertilization. Nutrient vector diagnosis showed "nutritional suitability" in the 0.3 ton-138.0 g/yr/tree treatment. Overall, containerized seedling cultivation was superior in growth, photosynthetic performance, photochemical efficiency, and nutrient storage capacity compared to bare root cultivation. These results be expected to contribute not only to the industrial production of excellent container seedlings of H. syriacus L. but also to the production of other woody plants.

Abstract:One of the global floriculture industry's limiting factors is the supply & accessibility of good quality viable seeds. While genetic variables mostly regulate product quality, effective cultural tactics or interventions can have a significant impact. As a result, an investigation was conducted to assess the effects of crop management, multi-nutrient foliar sprays, and different planting density on seed germination, seedling attributes, de-hydrogenase activity (DHA), and electric conductivity of China aster (Callistephus chinensis) seed leachates. The experiment consisted of two levels of pinching (P0 and P1), three planting densities (D1, D2, and D3), and three levels of foliar sprays (S1, S2, and S3), replicated thrice in a randomized complete block design. The results indicated enhanced DHA (0.47, 0.44 and 0.46 mg L−1), seedling fresh weight (182.19, 176.48 and 169.51 mg), seedling dry weight (1.88, 1.79 and 1.81), root length (3.12, 2.92 and 2.86 cm), and cell wall integrity as illustrated with condensed electric conductivity (ќ) of seed leachates (1.53, 1.56 and 1.56 dSm−1) with pinching, wider plant density and five foliar applications of nutrients. Notably highest germination percentage (81.11 and 82.50), mean germination time (2.43 and 2.36 day−1), germination index (4.57 and 4.57), root-shoot ratio (0.34 and 0.33), and shoot length (4.08 and 4.06 cm) were recorded in seed acquired from plants subjected to pinching and five foliar sprays of nutrients. In conclusion, the seeds obtained from plants subjected to crop manipulation by removal of terminal portion at visible bud stage (P1), five foliar applications of nutrient sprays (S3), and broader planting density (D1) depicted better seed biochemical and electric attributes, germination and growth properties. As a result, the investigation showed that appropriate and timely cultural intervention could significantly increase seed quality. From a grower's standpoint, this strategy is simple, affordable, and cost-effective.
Effects of Different Cultivation Measures on Growth and Physiology of Container Seedling of Paeonia Ostii

Abstract:Container seedlings of Paeonia ostii T. Hong et J. X. Zhang were cultivated in different substrate ratios (i. e. volume ratio of peat and perlite of 1:0, 2:1 and 3:1, respectively), treated by different measures for lateral root promoting ( including single measures of main root shortened by cutting and irrigating root by 200 mg · L-1 IBA solution and combined measure of above two single measures ) and cultivated in different culture containers ( including tray, nutrition pot and non-woven bag ) , respectively. Differences in morphological indexes, weight per plant, root/shoot ratio and some physiological indexes of container seedling were analyzed, and on this basis, cultivation measures suitable for cultivation of container seedling of P. ostii were screened. The analysis results show that in peat-perlite mixed substrate with volume ratio of 3:1, lateral root number per plant, fresh and dry weights of under-ground part per plant, root/shoot ratio and contents of total chlorophyll, soluble sugar and water in leaf of container seedling of P. ostii all are significantly higher than those in other substrates. Eithertreated by single measure of main root shortened by cutting or by combined measure, leaf area per plant, lateral root number per plant, fresh and dry weights of under-ground part per plant, root/shoot ratio and water content in leaf of container seedling all are significantly higher than those of container seedling of the control ( no treating) and treated by single measure of irrigating root by 200 mg·L-1 IBA solution, in which, most indexes of container seedling treated by combined measure are the highest. Plant height, collar diameter, lateral root number per plant, and contents of total chlorophyll, soluble sugar and water in leaf of container seedling cultivated in non-woven bag and nutrition pot all are significantly higher than those of container seedling cultivated in tray, in which, lateral root number per plant, contents of total chlorophyll and water in leaf of container seedling cultivated in non-woven bag are the highest, and these three indexes are significantly higher than those of container seedling cultivated in nutrition pot. It is suggested that there is a certain effect of different cultivation measures on growth and physiology of container seedling of P. ostii, on the whole, effects on lateral root number per plant, main root length, weight of under-ground part, root/shoot ratio, leaf area, contents of total chlorophyll, soluble sugar and water in leaf all are greater. According to the experimental results, cultivation measure suitable for cultivation of container seedling of P. ostii is selected preliminarily, that is, using non-woven bag, taking peat-perlite mixed substrate with volume ratio of 3:1 as cultivation substrate, and practicing combined measure of main root shortened by cutting with irrigating root by 200 mg·L-1 IBA solution.

Abstract:Soilless culture systems are currently one of the fastest-growing sectors in horticulture. The plant roots are confined into a specific rootzone and are exposed to environmental changes and cultivation factors. The recent scientific evidence regarding the effects of several environmental and cultivation factors on the morphology, architecture, and performance of the root system of plants grown in SCS are the objectives of this study. The effect of root restriction, nutrient solution, irrigation frequency, rootzone temperature, oxygenation, vapour pressure deficit, lighting, rootzone pH, root exudates, CO2, and beneficiary microorganisms on the functionality and performance of the root system are discussed. Overall, the main results of this review demonstrate that researchers have carried out great efforts in innovation to optimize SCS water and nutrients supply, proper temperature, and oxygen levels at the rootzone and effective plant–beneficiary microorganisms, while contributing to plant yields. Finally, this review analyses the new trends based on emerging technologies and various tools that might be exploited in a smart agriculture approach to improve root management in soilless cropping while procuring a deeper understanding of plant root–shoot communication.

The research of container seedling cultivation technology on Cyclobalanopsis gilva

Abstract:In order to improve the seedlings quality and survival rate of Cyclobalanopsis gilva,taking the biennial seedlings and container seedling of C. gilva for contrast test were analyzed,and the container seedlings for survival rate and growth volume were analyzed by using different seedling container size and shade treatment. The results were showed that the container seedlings could significantly improve the C. gilva plant height,ground diameter,root length,dry weight of above ground and underground parts of dry weight; different seedling container size had no significant effect on seedling survival rate,but the container size had a significant effect on seedling growth; with 80% shade network,the survival rate and height growth of container seedling were increased,but the diameter growth of container seedling had no significant difference compared with 60% shade net treatment.

Abstract:Seed coating plays a crucial role in agriculture technology as a defence mechanism for crop protection and development. Conventional seed coating methods typically involve excessive material usage, high production costs and negatively impact human health and the environment. Orthodox approaches often require the use of bulk and hazardous substances, resulting in the inefficient delivery of active ingredients. Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising alternative with its small size, high surface area, and instantaneous reactivity leading to improved efficiency and reduced material usage. Recent studies have highlighted the use of nanomaterials, specifically nanoparticles and nanofibers which offer significant benefits in boosting the seed mechanical properties, germination and vigor index by enhancing seed water uptake, and nutrient absorption due to their permeability, small size and high surface area. Nanomaterials can provide better seed protection against biotic and abiotic stresses, including pests, diseases, and environmental factors such as drought and salinity. The controlled release of active ingredients from nanomaterials enhances plant development by ensuring the seeds receive the necessary nutrients over an extended period. Nanomaterials impregnated with biochemical agents, such as hormones and enzymes, can enhance the viability of these agents and improve crop growth by enabling a systematic release mechanism. This review provides an overview of the latest developments and understanding of how nanomaterials can be applied for seed coating purposes, including their mechanism of action and potential benefits. It is expected to provide valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in the field of agriculture and contribute to the development of sustainability.

Abstract:Plants have complex internal signaling pathways to quickly adjust to environmental changes and harvest energy from the environment. Facing the growing population, there is an urgent need for plant transformation and precise monitoring of plant growth to improve crop yields. Nanotechnology, an interdisciplinary research field, has recently been boosting plant yields and meeting global energy needs. In this context, a new field, "plant nanoscience," which describes the interaction between plants and nanotechnology, emerges as the times require. Nanosensors, nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, and nano-plant genetic engineering are of great help in increasing crop yields. Nanogenerators are helping to develop the potential of plants in the field of energy harvesting. Furthermore, the uptake and internalization of nanomaterials in plants and the possible effects are also worthy of attention. In this review, a forward-looking perspective on the plant nanoscience is presented and feasible solutions for future food shortages and energy crises are provided.
