Abstract:We have realized a new optical system to form multiple aerial images by use of thin opticalcomponents. The proposed optical system is based on aerial imaging by retro-reflection (AIRR). Theaerial image formed by AIRR is visible over a wide viewing angle without using 3D glasses. Inaddition to AIRR, we have introduced a technique called infinity mirror in which a mirror and a halfmirror are arranged in parallel to form multiple virtual images of a single light source. Bycombining AIRR and infinity mirror, multiple images are formed in mid-air. By placing aretro-reflector obliquely outside the infinity mirror, our proposed optics improves the brightnessof the aerial images by placing.

Abstract:This paper proposed a diffractive imaging technology called rotary astigmatic diffractive imaging (RADI). The system uses a rotatable cylindrical lens for rotary astigmatic modulation and a camera for collecting the diffractive patterns distorted in different angles. Then a field can be reconstructed with the patterns by an iterative algorithm. Compared with the original astigmatic diffractive imaging system, our simulations show RADI system has the greater performance of convergence with the same number of constrained patterns. In addition, it is easy for RADI to increase the number of diffraction measurements to accelerate the convergence further. Considering the center of the cylindrical lens does not coincide with the center of rotation, a calibration method is proposed. An optical vortex of charge two is reconstructed experimentally demonstrating the system can solve the problem of unique phase recovery. Besides, the reconstructions of a USAF resolution chart with different numbers of constrained patterns shows the rate of convergence increases obviously with the increase of the number of diffraction measurements. The reconstruction shows the resolution of our system is about 14.25 lp/mm, which is 60% of the diffraction limited resolution. Our RADI can provide a high-performance way but with simple setup to realize field reconstruction.

Compositing Images For An Optical Butting Camera

Abstract:To prove the concept of the optical butting method which is used to extend the field of view of an imaging system, we have built a prototype camera. In this camera, the optical image is divided into four parts each of which is received by a corresponding image sensor. In this paper, we present an approach which is capable of compositing the four image parts to form a full image. The response function of the camera is estimated so that we can get a linear camera response. The homography matrices between the four image parts are computed using a feature based image registration method. Vignetting artifacts are removed by vignetting correction factors. Finally, a gradient based image stitching method is proposed to remove the intensity inconsistency.

Abstract:Depth of field (DoF) defines the longitudinal range of objects in sharp focus. Imaging systems for machine vision are generally limited to a small DoF by various conditions, constraining the visual inspection of objects with large depth. In this paper, we develop a multi-image-distance imaging system, which can extend the DoF by capturing multi-focus images for fusion. A three-way beam-splitter prism is designed to support independent imaging of three image sensors. Through adjusting the sensors to different back focal lengths, multiple images focusing at different depths are captured in a single exposure. Finally, the focused regions of each image are fused for extending the DoF. Analyses of the proposed DoF extension strategy illustrate excellent enhancement more than three times. Moreover, we introduce a DoF measurement method based on the estimation of the point spread function, and measurement experiments are conducted using the fabricated prototype. Imaging experiments for various scenes demonstrate great imaging quality and DoF extension performance. The proposed multi-image-distance imaging system provides an effective and practical DoF extension solution for close-range visual inspection.

Abstract:A new optical design of triple-waveband hybrid imaging system over the visible,MWIR and LWIR wavebands by combining reflective,refractive and harmonic diffractive elements was presented in this paper.The primary mirror of Cassegrain configuration was used as optical aperture for non chromatic and light weight,and the second mirror separates the IR bands transmitted and the visible band reflected.Using harmonic DOE and Schupmann configuration,the chromatic aberration of both IR bands was corrected by single material-Germanium.With secondary imaging form,the cold stop efficiency of IR bands was 100%.The triple-waveband lens system is powerful in providing diffractive-limited performance on light and compact configuration.
An Aerial Composite Imaging Method with Multiple Upright Cameras Based on Axis-Shift Theory

Abstract:Several composite camera systems were made for wide coverage by using 3 or 4 oblique cameras. A virtual projecting center and image was used for geometrical correction and mosaic with different projecting angles and different spatial resolutions caused by oblique cameras. An imaging method based axis-shift theory is proposed to acquire wide coverage images by several upright cameras. Four upright camera lenses have the same wide angle of view. The optic axis of lens is not on the center of CCD, and each CCD in each camera covers only one part of the whole focus plane. Oblique deformation caused by oblique camera would be avoided by this axis-shift imaging method. The principle and parameters are given and discussed. A prototype camera system is constructed by common DLSR (digital single lens reflex) cameras. The angle of view could exceed 80 degrees along the flight direction when the focal length is 24mm, and the ratio of base line to height could exceed 0.7 when longitudinal overlap is 60%. Some original and mosaic images captured by this prototype system in some ground and airborne experiments are given at last. Experimental results of image test show that the upright imaging method can effectively avoid the oblique deformation and meet the geometrical precision of image mosaic.

Abstract:Technology for capturing omnidirectional (360°) three-dimensional information in a real environment has applications in many areas, such as security with surveillance cameras, or the implementation of a complex sense of reality. In this paper, the authors propose an imaging device constructed of one camera and two flat mirrors and a technique for omnidirectional three-dimensional reconstruction using spatiotemporal volume. The proposed technique uses an imaging device with mirrors, whereby a large baseline length can be implemented without the use of multiple cameras and measurement precision can be improved beyond that of conventional methods using a single camera. Also, when capturing depth, a multibaseline algorithm using SSSD (Sum of SSD) is used to extract the trajectory for a spatiotemporal volume corresponding to the left and right mirror fields. Thereby, incorrect correspondences due to image noise or repeated pattern are reduced. Moreover, the influence of occlusion can also be reduced by separately evaluating the trajectory extraction results for the left and right mirror fields and selecting the good side. Experiments were performed using synthetic images and real images, an improvement in estimation precision with the imaging device was demonstrated, as well as the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:In this paper, a construction method through forward and reverse ray tracing for a design of ultra-wide linear field-of-view (FOV) off-axis freeform systems is proposed. The freeform initial system is numerically constructed by a point-by-point calculation. This method begins with a spherical system solved by the paraxial optical theory. In this method, the primary mirror is calculated through the reverse ray tracing; hence, the size and position of the aperture stop is not affected by the changes of mirrors. The fields in the reverse system are selected to cause certain beam overlaps on the primary mirror between adjacent fields. These overlaps offer a more uniform distribution of data points, improving the calculation of this mirror. As an example, an off-axis freeform system with an ultra-wide linear field-of-view of 70 degrees is designed by this method. The effective focal length of the system is 75 mm, and the F-number is 5.8. The diffraction-limited performance of this freeform system in the visible band and the near infrared and near ultraviolet bands validate the construction method presented in this paper.

Abstract:Methods and devices that employ multiple image sensors to capture a target image of a scene are described herein. As described, placing at least one reflective or refractive surface near a plurality of image sensors means that the sensor uses the reflective or refractive surface to direct a portion of the image scene to each sensor. Makes it possible to capture images with a wider field of view and longer focal length than can be captured individually. Different parts of the scene captured by the sensor can overlap and can be cropped in a coordinated fashion to produce a target image.

Abstract:In this Letter, a novel and compact freeform off-axis three-mirror imaging system and its detailed design method are proposed. The primary mirror and tertiary mirror of the system have the same surface analytical expression and they are integrated on one single freeform surface. In this way, the alignment process is made much easier due to the much fewer degrees of freedom. In addition, the difficulty and cost for the data handling, fabrication,and testing of the freeform surfaces and system can also be significantly reduced in some cases, especially compared with the configuration having multiple surfaces of different expressions integrated on one monolithic substrate. The final system has a 100 mm effective focal length and a 4°× 3° field of view. The modulation transfer function of the system is close to the diffraction-limit.
An Optical Design for Interaction With Mid-Air Images Using the Shape of Real Objects

Abstract:Mid-air images, which are augmented reality (AR) technologies, enable computer graphics (CG) images to be superimposed on a physical space. The mid-air image can be placed side-by-side with real objects, allowing various interactions, such as directly manipulating them to contact the mid-air image on the same plane. In this case, the measurement of the shape of real objects is necessary to realize geometric consistency between the mid-air image and real objects. However, in mid-air image optics, real objects cannot be placed behind the mid-air image (i.e., at a position where they interrupt the light rays that form the mid-air image). This limits the placement of the sensor and may prevent accurate measurement of the shape of the real objects. Consequently, we proposed an optical system for interaction with mid-air images that virtually measures the shape of real objects from behind the mid-air image. In our system, a virtual infrared (IR) sensor is formed behind the mid-air image using a hot mirror that reflects only IR light. The optical system considers the visible area of the mid-air image and the measurable area of the sensor. We evaluated the sharpness, luminance, and chromaticity to assess whether the hot mirror had changed the appearance of the mid-air image. The results confirmed that there was little impact on user perception. Furthermore, we developed four supporting applications for our system to show its efficacy.

Abstract:Reflective imaging systems form an important part of photonic devices such as spectrometers, telescopes, augmented and virtual reality headsets or lithography platforms. Reflective optics provide unparalleled spectral performance and can be used to reduce overall volume and weight. So far, most reflective designs have focused on two or three reflections, while four-reflection freeform designs can deliver a higher light throughput (faster F-number) as well as a larger field-of-view (FOV). However, advanced optical design strategies for four-reflection freeform systems have been rarely reported in literature. This is due to the increased complexity in solution space but also the fact that additional mirrors hinder a cost-effective realization (manufacture, alignment, etc.). Recently, we have proposed a novel design method to directly calculate the freeform surface coefficients while merely knowing the mirror positions and tilts. Consequently, this method allows laymen with basic optical design knowledge to calculate 'first time right' freeform imaging systems in a matter of minutes. This contrasts with most common freeform design processes, which requires considerable experience, intuition or guesswork. Firstly, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for a four-mirror high-throughput telescope with 250mm-focal-length, F/2.5 and a wide rectangular FOV of 8.5° x 25.5°. In a subsequent step, we propose an effective three-mirror but four-reflection imaging system, which consists of two freeform mirrors and one double-reflection spherical mirror. Compared with common three-mirror and three-reflection imagers, our novel multi-reflection system shows unprecedented possibilities for an economic implementation while drastically reducing the overall volume.

Abstract:Illuminating or imaging samples from a broad angular range is essential in a wide variety of computational 3D imaging and resolution-enhancement techniques, such as optical projection tomography (OPT), optical diffraction tomography (ODT), synthetic aperture microscopy, Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM), structured illumination microscopy (SIM), photogrammetry, and optical coherence refraction tomography (OCRT). The wider the angular coverage, the better the resolution enhancement or 3D resolving capabilities. However, achieving such angular ranges is a practical challenge, especially when approaching plus-or-minus 90 degrees or beyond. Often, researchers resort to expensive, proprietary high numerical aperture (NA) objectives, or to rotating the sample or source-detector pair, which sacrifices temporal resolution or perturbs the sample. Here, we propose several new strategies for multi-angle imaging approaching 4pi steradians using concave parabolic or ellipsoidal mirrors and fast, low rotational inertia scanners, such as galvanometers. We derive theoretically and empirically relations between a variety of system parameters (e.g., NA, wavelength, focal length, telecentricity) and achievable fields of view (FOVs) and importantly show that intrinsic tilt aberrations do not restrict FOV for many multi-view imaging applications, contrary to conventional wisdom. Finally, we present strategies for avoiding spherical aberrations at obliquely illuminated flat boundaries. Our simple designs allow for high-speed multi-angle imaging for microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic applications.

Abstract:In this Letter,we propose a novel configuration and design method of freeform,dual fields-of-view(FOVs),dual focal lengths,off-axis three-mirror zoom imaging systems.The switch of the two zooms is achieved by rotating a single mirror element.The design of a freeform,dual focal lengths zoom system is realized by a point-by-point design approach for the first time to our knowledge.This method enables the direct design of freeform surfaces from initial planes using given system specifications and configuration,and the designed system can be taken as a good starting point for further optimization.A freeform,dual FOVs,dual focal lengths,off-axis three-mirror zoom system is demonstrated.The F-numbers of the two zooms are 2 and 2.4.The dual FOVs are 3°×3°and2.5°×2.5°.After final optimization,both of the zooms achieve high performances.
Off-axis Zoom Optical Systems Based on Mirror Rotation and Their Design Method

Abstract:This paper proposes a type of off-axis zoom optical system, achieving zoom through the rotation of one mirror. These systems have two different operating states, where one state has a shorter focal length and a larger field of view, and the other with the opposite. Switching between the two states is accomplished by simply rotating one mirror by a small angle. In contrast to the traditional method of simultaneously controlling the axial translation and rotation of the mirrors to achieve zoom, these systems only require a small rotation of the third mirror to achieve zoom, which is advantageous for reducing the system's control difficulty. In addition, a method for the design of this type of system is presented and used to design an off-axis zoom imaging optical system incorporating three freeform mirrors. The system has an entrance pupil diameter of 20 mm, a focal length of 200 mm in the long focal state, a focal length of 100 mm in the short focal state, and a zoom ratio of 2 times. The system requires only a 2.93 degrees rotation of the third mirror to switch between the two states. The final system illustrates excellent imaging performance close to the diffraction limit in the visible light wavelength range.

Abstract:Kaleidoscopes have a great potential in computational photography as a tool for redistributing light rays. In time-of-flight imaging the concept of the kaleidoscope is also useful when dealing with the reconstruction of the geometry that causes multiple reflections. This work is a step towards opening new possibilities for the use of mirror systems as well as towards making their use more practical. The focus of this work is the analysis of planar kaleidoscope systems to enable their practical applicability in 3D imaging tasks. We analyse important practical properties of mirror systems and develop a theoretical toolbox for dealing with planar kaleidoscopes. Based on this theoretical toolbox we explore the use of planar kaleidoscopes for multiview imaging and for the acquisition of 3D objects. The knowledge of the mirrors positions is crucial for these multi-view applications. On the other hand, the reconstruction of the geometry of a mirror room from time-offlight measurements is also an important problem. We therefore employ the developed tools for solving this problem using multiple observations of a single scene point.

Abstract:The entire process of image formation and refocusing of light field photography with microlens array is simulated using the in-house software OTS based on real ray tracing. The optical system consists of a photographic lens and the microlens array which are specifically designed. Objects are placed in different distance before the lens, and images of them on the detector plane are got by imaging simulation algorithm. Utilizing the color, intensity and the corresponding direction information of light rays on the image plane, pictures focusing at different depth in the image space are calculated, so that we can refocus at different objects in different distance. The paper also details the basic requirement of optical system and this simulation process is a fundamental work of research on design method and performance of lens using in light field photography.
