Abstract:While molecular machines play an increasingly significant role in nanoscience research and applications, there remains a shortage of investigations and understanding of the molecular gear (cogwheel), which is an indispensable and fundamental component to drive a larger correlated molecular machine system. Employing ab initio calculations, we investigate model systems consisting of molecules adsorbed on metal or graphene surfaces, ranging from very simple triple-arm gears such as PF<sub>3</sub> and NH<sub>3</sub> to larger multiarm gears based on carbon rings. We explore in detail the transmission of slow rotational motion from one gear to the next by these relatively simple molecules, so as to isolate and reveal the mechanisms of the relevant intermolecular interactions. Several characteristics of molecular gears are discussed, in particular the flexibility of the arms and the slipping and skipping between interlocking arms of adjacent gears, which differ from familiar macroscopic rigid gears. The underlying theoretical concepts suggest strongly that other analogous structures may also exhibit similar behavior which may inspire future exploration in designing large correlated molecular machines.

Abstract:Even in 2020, there's still some room at the bottom: The miniaturization of machines remains an important goal that attracts interest in many fields. In particular, making ultrasmall gears to transmit mechanical motion is a challenge, with molecular gears being the ultimate target. Motivated by recent experimental studies on molecule gears, the authors employ atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and a nearly-rigid-body model to obtain insights into the dynamics of both single gears and trains of them. Abstract:Cats use the connection governing parallel transport in the space of shapes to land safely on their feet. Here we argue that this connection also explains the impressive performance of molecular motors by enabling molecules to evade conclusions of Feynman's ratchet-and-pawl analysis. We first demonstrate, using simple molecular models, how directed rotational motion can emerge from shape changes even without angular momentum. We then computationally design knotted polyalanine molecules and show how their shape space connection organizes individual atom thermal vibrations into collective rotational motion, independently of angular momentum. Our simulations show that rotational motion arises effortlessly even in ambient water, making the molecule an effective theory time crystal. Our findings have potential for practical molecular motor design and engineering and can be verified through high-precision nuclear magnetic resonance measurements.

Abstract:Periodic chains of molecular gears in which molecules couple with each other and rotate on surfaces have been previously explored by us theoretically using ab initio simulation tools. On the basis of the knowledge and experience gained about the interactions between neighboring molecular gears, we here explore the transmission of rotational motion and energy over larger distances, namely, through a longer chain of gear-like passive "slave" molecules. Such microscopic gears exhibit quite different behaviors compared to rigid cogwheels in the macroscopic world due to their structural flexibility affecting intermolecular interaction. Here, we investigate the capabilities of such gear chains and reveal the mechanisms of the transmission process in terms of both quantum-level density functional theory (DFT) and simple classical mechanics. We find that the transmission of rotation along gear chains depends strongly on the gear-gear distance: short distances can cause tilting of gears and even irregular "creep-then-jump" (or "stick-slip") motion or expulsion of gears; long gear-gear distances cause weak coupling between gears, slipping and skipping. More importantly, for transmission of rotation at intermediate gear-gear distances, our modeling clearly exhibits the relative roles of several important factors: flexibility of gear arms, axles, and supports, as well as resulting rotational delays, slippages, and thermal and other effects. These studies therefore allow better informed design of future molecular machine components involving motors, gears, axles, etc.

Abstract:The miniaturization of gears towards the nanoscale is a formidable task posing a variety of challenges to current fabrication technologies. In context, the understanding, via computer simulations, of the mechanisms mediating the transfer of rotational motion between nanoscale gears can be of great help to guide the experimental designs. Based on atomistic molecular dynamics simulations in combination with a nearly rigid-body approximation, we study the transmission of rotational motion between molecule gears and solid-state gears, respectively. For the molecule gears under continuous driving, we identify different regimes of rotational motion depending on the magnitude of the external torque. In contrast, the solid-state gears behave like ideal gears with nearly perfect transmission. Furthermore, we simulate the manipulation of the gears by a scanning-probe tip and we find that the mechanical transmission strongly depends on the center of mass distance between gears. A new regime of transmission is found for the solid-state gears.

First, we demonstrate the emergence of directed rotational motion from shape changes, which is independent of angular momentum. Then, we computationally design knotted polyalanine molecules and demonstrate the organization of individual atom thermal vibrations into collective rotational motion, which is independent of angular momentum. The motion occurs effortlessly even in ambient water and can be further enhanced through spontaneous symmetry breaking, rendering the molecule an effective theory time crystal. Our findings can be experimentally verified via nuclear magnetic resonance measurements and hold practical potential for molecular motor design and engineering.

Abstract:Molecule- and solid-state gears build the elementary constituents of nanoscale mechanical machineries. Recent experimental advances in fabrication technologies in the field have strongly contributed to better delineate the roadmap towards the ultimate goal of engineering molecular-scale mechanical devices. To complement experimental studies, computer simulations play an invaluable role, since they allow to address, with atomistic resolution, various fundamental issues such as the transmission of angular momentum in nanoscale gear trains and the mechanisms of energy dissipation at such length scales. We review in this chapter our work addressing the latter problem. Our computational approach is based on classical atom-istic Molecular Dynamics simulations. Two basic problems are discussed: (i) the dominant energy dissipation channels of a rotating solid-state nanogear adsorbed on a surface, and (ii) the transmission of rotational motion and frictional processes in a heterogeneous gear pair consisting of a graphene nanodisk and a molecular-scale gear.

Abstract:Recent developments in artificial molecular machines have enabled precisely controlled molecular motion, which allows several distinct mechanical operations at the nanoscale. However, harnessing and amplifying molecular motion along multiple length scales to induce macroscopic motion are still major challenges and comprise an important next step toward future actuators and soft robotics. The key to addressing this challenge relies on effective integration of synthetic molecular machines in a hierarchically aligned structure so numerous individual molecular motions can be collected in a cooperative way and amplified to higher length scales and eventually lead to macroscopic motion. Here, we report the complex motion of liquid crystal networks embedded with molecular motors triggered by single-wavelength illumination. By design, both racemic and enantiomerically pure molecular motors are programmably integrated into liquid crystal networks with a defined orientation. The motors have multiple functions acting as cross-linkers, actuators, and chiral dopants inside the network. The collective rotary motion of motors resulted in multiple types of motion of the polymeric film, including bending, wavy motion, fast unidirectional movement on surfaces, and synchronized helical motion with different handedness, paving the way for the future design of responsive materials with enhanced complex functions.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Metallic glasses (MGs) have an amorphous atomic arrangement, but their structure and dynamics in the nanoscale are not homogeneous. Numerous studies have confirmed that the static and dynamic heterogeneities of MGs are vital for their deformation mechanism. The “defects” in MGs are envisaged to be structurally loosely packed and dynamically active to external stimuli. To date, no definite structure-property relationship has been established to identify liquid-like “defects” in MGs. In this paper, we proposed a machine-learned “defects” from atomic trajectories rather than static structural signatures. We analyzed the atomic motion behavior at different temperatures via a k-nearest neighbors machine learning model, and quantified the dynamics of individual atoms as the machine-learned temperature. Applying this new temperature-like parameter to MGs under stress-induced flow, we can recognize which atoms respond like “liquids” to the applied loads. The evolution of liquid-like regions reveals the dynamic origin of plasticity (thermo- and acousto-plasticity) of MGs and the correlation between stress-induced heterogeneity and local environment around atoms, providing new insights into thermo- and acousto-plastic forming.

Complex flow profiles in microscopic active crystals

Abstract:Active solids emerge from self-actuating components interacting with each other to form crystalline patterns. In equilibrium, commensurability underpins our understanding of nanoscale friction and particle-level dynamics of crystals. However, these concepts have yet to be imported into the realm of active matter. Here, we develop an experimental platform and a theoretical description for microscopic clusters composed of active particles confined and self-assembled into small crystals. In our experiments, these crystallites form upon circular confinement of active rollers, with a magic number of 61 rollers per well. Competition between solidity and self propulsion leads to self shearing and complex flow inversion behaviour, along with self sliding states and activity induced melting. We discover active stick slip dynamics, which periodically switch between a commensurate static state and an incommensurate self-sliding state characterised by a train of localised defects. We describe the steady state behaviour using a discretised model of active hydrodynamics. We then quantify the intermittent stick slip dynamics using a self-propelled extension of the Frenkel Kontorova (FK) model, a fundamental workhorse of slipping and flow in crystals. Our findings in a colloidal model system point to a wealth of phenomena in incommensurate active solids as design principles for both assembly and robotics down to the nanoscale.

Abstract:Synthetic materials can change shape in response to stimuli, with mechanisms reported so far based on the induction of disorder in a pre-organized molecular system. By contrast, harnessing molecular motion by transducing the work of molecular machines is energetically more effective and can mediate functional complexity, as exemplified in biological systems. Here, we show that the power strokes operated by a light-driven molecular motor at the nanoscale can be transduced into the repeated back-and-forth swaying motion of a polymer at the macroscopic length scale. The synchronization of molecular motors, as governed by the energetic landscape of the rotary cycle, is essential to this transduction. Combining synchronization in time with orientation in space allows transducing one molecular rotation into one macroscopic swaying motion using a mechanism that shows analogy with reciprocating pumps. Making materials operate through a variety of sophisticated transduction modes will be critical for the field of autonomous soft robots.

Abstract:Dynamic molecular crystals showing light-triggered macro-movements have attracted great attention due to their unique ability for light–force conversion. These molecular crystals are driven remotely without any intermediary devices like wires and motors, which can transform light energy into mechanical work directly. However, the limited space restricts molecular rotation and motion in the crystalline state; thus, realizing macro-movements in molecular crystal systems is still a formidable challenge. In this review, we aim to focus on the underlying working mechanism of the photo-controllable macroscopic motion of molecular crystals with special focus on their practical applications. In detail, we discuss the basic principles and macroscopic photomechanical effects of these dynamic molecular crystals, including their deformation (i.e., bending, twisting, curling); complex motion (i.e., crawling, rotating, rolling); and disintegration (i.e., photosalient effect). Then, we introduce the most promising applications of photomechanical molecular crystals in the fields of all-optical devices, crystal actuators, and biomimetic artificial muscles. Therefore, this review will provide inspiration to develop state-of-the-art dynamic molecular crystals by bridging the disciplines of physics, chemistry, and engineering science.

Abstract:Lubricants are widely used in macroscopic mechanical systems to reduce friction and wear. However, on the microscopic scale, it is not clear to what extent lubricants are beneficial. Therefore, in this study, we consider two diamond solid-state gears at the nanoscale immersed in different lubricant molecules and perform classical MD simulations to investigate the rotational transmission of motion. We find that lubricants can help to synchronize the rotational transmission between gears regardless of the molecular species and the center-of-mass distance. Moreover, the influence of the angular velocity of the driving gear is investigated and shown to be related to the bond formation process between gears.

Abstract:Crystal adaptronics, a burgeoning field at the intersection of materials science and engineering, focuses on harnessing the unique properties of organic molecular crystals to achieve unprecedented levels of maneuverability and processability in various applications. Increasingly, ordered stacks of crystalline materials are being endowed with fascinating mechanical compliance changes in response to external environment. Understanding how these crystals can be manipulated and tailored for specific functions has become paramount in the pursuit of advanced materials with customizable properties. Simultaneously, the processability of organic molecular crystals plays a pivotal role in shaping their utility in real-world applications. From growth methodologies to fabrication techniques, the ability to precisely machine these crystals opens new avenues for engineering materials with enhanced functionalities. The processing methods of these crystals enhance their versatility, allowing their integration into a wide range of devices and technologies, further expanding the potential applications of crystal-adaptive electronics. This review aims to provide a concise overview of the current landscape in the study of dynamic organic molecular crystals, with an emphasis on the interconnected themes of operability and processability.

Long-range angular correlations of particle displacements at a plastic-to-elastic transition in jammed amorphous solids

Abstract:Understanding how a flow turns into an amorphous solid is a fundamental challenge in statistical physics, during which no apparent structural ordering appears. In the athermal limit, the two states are connected by a well-defined jamming transition, near which the solid is marginally stable. A recent mechanical response screening theory proposes an additional transition above jamming, called a plastic-to-elastic transition here, separating anomalous and quasi-elastic mechanical behavior. Through numerical inflation simulations in two dimensions, we show that the onsets of long-range radial and angular correlations of particle displacements decouple, occurring respectively at the jamming and plastic-to-elastic transitions. The latter is characterized by a power-law diverging correlation angle and a power-law spectrum of the displacements along a circle. This work establishes two-step transitions on the mechanical properties during ``decompression melting'' of an athermal over-jammed amorphous solid, reminiscent of the two-step structural melting of a crystal in two dimensions. In contradistinction with the latter, the plastic-to-elastic transition exists also in three dimensions.

Abstract:Design and fabrication of macroscopic functional devices by molecular engineering is an emerging and effective strategy in exploration of advanced materials. Photo‐responsive overcrowded alkene‐based molecular motor (OAMM) has been considered as one of the most promising molecular machines due to the unique rotary motion driven by light with high temporal and spatial precision. Amplifying the molecular rotary motions into macroscopic behaviors of photo‐directed systems links the molecular dynamics with macroscopic motions of materials, providing new opportunities to design novel materials and devices with a bottom‐up strategy. In this review, we will summarize recent developments of the light‐responsive liquid crystal system triggered by OAMM. The mechanism of amplification effect of liquid crystal matrix will be introduced firstly. Then progress of the OAMM‐driven liquid crystal materials will be described including light‐controlled photonic crystals, texture‐tunable liquid crystal coating and micro‐spheres, photo‐actuated soft robots and dynamic optical devices. We hope that this review provides inspirations in design and exploration of light‐driven soft matters and novel functional materials from molecular engineering to structural modification. Targeted Assembly and Synchronization of Self-Spinning Microgears

Abstract:Self-assembly is the autonomous organization of components into patterns or structures: an essential ingredient of biology and a desired route to complex organization. At equilibrium, the structure is encoded through specific interactions, at an unfavorable entropic cost for the system. An alternative approach, widely used by Nature, uses energy input to bypass the entropy bottleneck and develop features otherwise impossible at equilibrium. Dissipative building blocks that inject energy locally were made available by recent advance in colloidal science but have not been used to control self-assembly. Here we show the robust formation of self-powered rotors and dynamical superstructures from active particles and harness non-equilibrium phoretic phenomena to tailor interactions and direct self-assembly. We use a photoactive component that consumes fuel, hematite, to devise phototactic microswimmers that form self-spinning microgears following spatiotemporal light patterns. The gears are coupled via their chemical clouds and constitute the elementary bricks of synchronized superstructures, which autonomously regulate their dynamics. The results are quantitatively rationalized on the basis of a stochastic description of diffusio-phoretic oscillators dynamically coupled by chemical gradients to form directional interactions. Our findings demonstrate that non-equilibrium phenomena can be harnessed to shape interactions and program hierarchical constructions. It lays the groundwork for the self-assembly of dynamical architectures and synchronized micro-machinery.

Abstract:A physical mechanism of alternate motion of the double-headed processive motor is considered. Incorporating recent experimental observations, we introduce a model with load dependent transitions between states of motors. Our model explains the mechanism how randomly fluctuating motions can be converted into clocklike alternate motions. We investigate conditions under which the double-headed motor works as a collectively working processive motor.
