Abstract:Optical fiber communication systems play an important role in broadband signal transmissions, where the nonlinear dynamics in the long-haul optical fiber transmissions greatly degrade the transmission performance and limit the fiber capacity and reach. This paper analyzes and compensates for the nonlinear dynamics in the long-haul optical fiber transmission with the delay-based optoelectronic reservoir computing (RC) scheme, which provides benefits like time-adaptive tracking, low-complexity and hardware implementation potentials. The generalization of the analysis and compensation schemes from the traditional amplitude-modulated PAM signal to the amplitude-phase-modulated QAM signal is achieved by signal preprocessing. In the numerical study, the proposed RC-based fiber dynamics compensation scheme, with fiber reach from 1400km to 3000km, shows considerable performance with the digital backpropagation scheme, which is always used as the benchmark for nonlinear compensation of long-haul fiber transmissions. The realization complexity is much reduced with the RC-based schemes, which has provided a new dawn for optics-based nonlinear analysis and compensations.

Abstract:Fiber nonlinearity mitigation is a crucial technology for extending transmission reach and increasing channel capacity in high-baud rate wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems. In this work, we propose a novel, to the best of our knowledge, architecture that combines learned modified digital back-propagation (L-MDBP) to compensate for intra-channel nonlinearity and a two-stage decision directed least mean square (DDLMS) adaptive equalizer to mitigate inter-channel nonlinearity. By leveraging globally optimized model parameters and adaptive channel estimation, the proposed scheme achieves superior performance and lower computation complexity compared with conventional DBP. Specifically, in an 8 x 64 Gbaud 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) experimental system over 1600 km of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), our approach shows a 0.30-dB Q2-factor improvement and a complexity reduction of 82.3% compared with DBP with 8 steps per span (SPS). Furthermore, we enhance the adaptability of the architecture by introducing an online transfer learning (TL) technique, which requires only 2% of initial training epochs. & COPY; 2023 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we propose a low-complexity fiber nonlinearity impairments compensation scheme based on nonlinear step size and modified adaptive digital back propagation. To verify the feasibility of the proposed algorithm, we construct a simulation system of single channel 12.5 GBaud polarization division multiplexing 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (PDM-16QAM) optical transmission system. Comprehensive numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can not only search for the fiber nonlinear coefficient adaptively, but also has the characteristics of high performance and low complexity.

Abstract:We investigate the suppression of Kerr nonlinearities by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a fiber transmission system without power symmetry by including all the manifestations of the Kerr nonlinearities. We found that OPC cannot completely compensate for all Kerr nonlinearities in absence of power symmetry, and some nonlinearities may become even worse if one of the nonlinearities is fully compensated. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the compensation system to eliminate the most dominating nonlinearity. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the interplay of various kinds of nonlinearities. The need of proper design for transmission systems to suppress the dominating nonlinear effect is shown when all manifestations of Kerr nonlinearity are not compensated simultaneously.

Abstract:Fiber nonlinearity effects cap achievable rates and ranges in long-haul optical fiber communication links. Conventional nonlinearity compensation methods, such as perturbation theory-based nonlinearity compensation (PB-NLC), attempt to compensate for the nonlinearity by approximating analytical solutions to the signal propagation over optical fibers. However, their practical usability is limited by model mismatch and the immense computational complexity associated with the analytical computation of perturbation triplets and the nonlinearity distortion field. Recently, machine learning techniques have been used to optimise parameters of PB-based approaches, which traditionally have been determined analytically from physical models. It has been claimed in the literature that the learned PB-NLC approaches have improved performance and/or reduced computational complexity over their non-learned counterparts. In this paper, we first revisit the acclaimed benefits of the learned PB-NLC approaches by carefully carrying out a comprehensive performance-complexity analysis utilizing state-of-the-art complexity reduction methods. Interestingly, our results show that least squares-based PB-NLC with clustering quantization has the best performance-complexity trade-off among the learned PB-NLC approaches. Second, we advance the state-of-the-art of learned PB-NLC by proposing and designing a fully learned structure. We apply a bi-directional recurrent neural network for learning perturbation triplets that are alike those obtained from the analytical computation and are used as input features for the neural network to estimate the nonlinearity distortion field. Finally, we demonstrate through numerical simulations that our proposed fully learned approach achieves an improved performance-complexity trade-off compared to the existing learned and non-learned PB-NLC techniques.

We propose a meta-learning accelerated Bi-LSTM algorithm for fiber nonlinearity equalization by saving the training time with different launch powers. Digital nonlinearity compensation techniques such as digital backpropagation can perform well but require high computing resources. Machine learning can provide a low complexity capability especially for high-dimensional classification problems. Recently several supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques have been investigated in the field of fiber nonlinearity mitigation. This paper offers a brief review of the principles, performance and complexity of these machine learning approaches in the application of nonlinearity mitigation.

Abstract:In this paper, the control approach of a parallel optical compensation for frequency transfer over long-distance optical fiber link is analyzed. The transfer functions of temperature-controlled fiber delay line compensators and fast-speed fiber delay line compensator are obtained for the typical cases. The architecture and the important parameters of the controller for the parallel optical compensation are designed accordingly, and evaluated through system simulations. The simulation results show that the designed optical compensator can degrade system noise with large dynamic range and high precision while keeps the stability of the system.

Abstract:There is a tremendous need to maximize signal capacity without sacrificing energy consumption and complexity in optical fiber communications due to the rise of network traffic demand and critical latency-aware services such as telemedicine and the Internet-of-Things. In this work, the first system-agnostic and training-data-free fiber nonlinearity compensator (NLC) using affinity propagation (AP) clustering is experimentally demonstrated. It is shown that compared to linear equalization, AP can increase the signal quality-factor up to about 5 dB in 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulated coherent optical systems by effectively tackling deterministic and stochastic nonlinearities. AP outperforms benchmark clustering algorithms and complex deterministic schemes such as K-means, fuzzy-logic, digital-back propagation and Volterra-based NLC, offering a power margin extension of up to 4 dB.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an intelligent nonlinear compensation method using a stacked autoencoder (SAE) model in conjunction with principal component analysis (PCA) technology and a bidirectional long-short-term memory coupled with ANN (BiLSTM-ANN) nonlinear equalizer for an end-to-end (E2E) fiber-wireless integrated system. The SAE-optimized nonlinear constellation is utilized to mitigate nonlinearity during the optical and electrical conversion process. Our proposed BiLSTM-ANN equalizer is primarily based on time memory and information extraction characteristics, which can compensate for the remaining nonlinear redundancy. A low-complexity 50 Gbps E2E-optimized nonlinear 32 QAM signal is successfully transmitted over a span of 20 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) and 6 m wireless link at 92.5 GHz. The extended experimental results indicate that the proposed E2E system can achieve a reduction of up to 78% in BER and a gain in receiver sensitivity of over 0.7 dB at BER of 3.8 × 10-3. Moreover, computational complexity is reduced by more than 10 times compared to the classical training model.

Abstract:A fiber nonlinearity compensation scheme based on a complex-valued dimension-reduced neural network is proposed. The proposed scheme performs all calculations in complex values and employs a dimension-reduced triplet feature vector to reduce the size of the input layer. Simulation and experiment results show that the proposed neural network needed only 20 of computational complexity to reach the saturated performance gain of the real-valued triplet-input neural network, and had a similar saturated gain to the one-step-per-span digital backpropagation. In addition, the proposed scheme was 1.7 dB more robust to the noise from training data and required less bit precision for quantizing trained weights, compared with the real-valued triplet-input neural network.

Abstract:A flexible polarization demultiplexing method based on an adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) is proposed in which the process noise covariance has been estimated adaptively. The proposed method may significantly improve the adaptive capability of an extended Kalman filter (EKF) by adaptively estimating the unknown process noise covariance. Compared to the conventional EKF, the proposed method can avoid the tedious and time consuming parameter-by-parameter tuning operations. The effectiveness of this method is confirmed experimentally in 128 Gb/s 16QAM polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) coherent optical transmission systems. The results illustrate that our proposed AKF has a better tracking accuracy and a faster convergence (about 4 times quicker) compared to a conventional algorithm with optimal process noise covariance.
