Abstract:We discuss recent progress on the use of optical and digital phase conjugation techniques for nonlinearity compensation in optical fiber links. We compare the achievable performance gain of phase conjugated twin wave applied in two polarization states and time segments with mid-link optical phase conjugation and digital back propagation. For multicarrier transmission scheme such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, two recently proposed schemes, namely phase-conjugated pilots and phase-conjugated subcarrier coding are reviewed.

Abstract:Phase matching is crucial for effective nonlinear frequency conversion. Recent advances in photonic miniaturization greatly promote implementations of efficient nonlinear frequency conversion in integrated photonic devices. Here, we investigate second-harmonic generation in coupled nonlinear waveguides. We develop a nonlinear optical coupled-mode theory and implement the concept of supermode to analyze the phase-matching condition, which greatly facilitates deep understanding of physics therein and optimization of device design. We have successfully identified six phase-matching conditions for the first time. The dynamic nonlinear optical processes are analytically modeled, which explicitly demonstrates that the phase-matching condition can be realized by extra momentum compensating due to the interwaveguide coupling. The influences of input pump amplitude and relative phase difference are successively investigated. The theoretical model presented here should be readily generalized to other nonlinear optical processes (e.g., difference frequency generations) and will remain valid in asymmetric coupled waveguide structures or even beyond a weakly coupling regime. Our results will be useful for constructing highly efficient integrated nonlinear optical conversion devices with extended functionality.

Abstract:Traveling-wave semiconductor optical amplifier with self- phase modulation can be used to compensate for the laser chirp and optical fiber dispersion. Steep pulse edges of the initial laser output pulses lead to incomplete phase compensation and the compensated pulse distortion after a fiber transmission because the nonlinear chirp is added to the compensated pulses. Satisfactory operation of phase compensation, with small transmitted pulse distortion, is possible if the SOA is operated under optimum saturation level.

Abstract:We investigate the suppression of Kerr nonlinearities by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a fiber transmission system without power symmetry by including all the manifestations of the Kerr nonlinearities. We found that OPC cannot completely compensate for all Kerr nonlinearities in absence of power symmetry, and some nonlinearities may become even worse if one of the nonlinearities is fully compensated. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the compensation system to eliminate the most dominating nonlinearity. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the interplay of various kinds of nonlinearities. The need of proper design for transmission systems to suppress the dominating nonlinear effect is shown when all manifestations of Kerr nonlinearity are not compensated simultaneously.

Abstract:In this paper, we review different designs of distributed Raman amplifiers which have been proposed to minimize the signal power profile asymmetry in mid-link optical phase conjugation systems. We demonstrate how the symmetrical signal power profiles along the fiber can be achieved using various distributed Raman amplification techniques in the single-span and more realistic multi-span circumstances. In addition, we show the theoretically predicted results of the Kerr nonlinear product reduction with different Raman techniques in mid-link optical phase conjugator systems, and then in-line/long-haul transmission performance using numerical simulations.

Abstract:Compensation of Kerr nonlinearity-induced distortions has been shown to allow for increasing transmission rate and reach, with optical compensation techniques particularly attractive for broadband wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) scenarios. However, they normally require additional devices within the link, which is particularly challenging for already deployed systems, and even more so for unrepeatered transmission. In this work, we focus on providing lumped optical nonlinearity suppression, either at the transmitter or at the receiver side, based on optical phase conjugation (OPC). The theory to design scaled-down OPC compensation modules is derived, and it allows to move beyond the standard mid-link OPC approach and to explore compensation modules with fibers types not directly linked to the dispersion properties of the transmission link. This design method is then validated both through numerical investigations and experimental demonstrations for a number of systems with a varying degree of complexity. Ultimately, significant performance improvement is shown by employing short OPC-based compensation structures which are carefully designed to match much longer transmission links.

Abstract:Phase compensation using traveling-wave semiconductor optical amplifiers (TW-SOAs) can minimize the chirped pulse broadening along fiber transmission as a result of optical dispersion. The effect of initial pulse shape and SOA saturation degree on phase compensation is discussed. The multipeak spectrum structure phenomena observed in the experiments are explained successfully.

Abstract:We demonstrate that all the inter- and intra-channel nonlinear impairments can be eliminated simultaneously by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a power-symmetry system. However, for practical systems without power-symmetry, it is found that the effects of OPC on various nonlinearities are different in the same link. Even some nonlinearities are suppressed and some are enhanced. Therefore, optimizing the transmission link with OPC to suppress the dominant nonlinearity is demanded. By using 1-km-long highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and tuning the pump wavelength near the zero dispersion wavelength of the HNLF, we experimentally generate the phase conjugation of the dispersed ~300 fs pulses. OPC with conversion efficiency of about -16 dB and conversion bandwidth of about 38 nm is obtained.

Abstract:Digital coherent superposition (DCS) provides an interesting approach to combat the fiber nonlinearity by trading off the spectrum efficiency. In this paper, we apply DCS of phase-conjugated OFDM subcarriers in two approaches. One is the DCS of OFDM subcarriers in the single polarization, denoted as SP-DCS-OFDM. The other is in the dual polarizations, or DP-DCS-OFDM. We show that both of them can cancel the fiber nonlinearity to the first order. We compare their performance in a simulation of long-distance nonlinear transmissions. With some difference, both approaches improve the Q-factor by much larger than 3 dB.

In this paper, we review two nonlinear compensation methods: digital backward propagation （BP） and nonlinear electrical equalizer （NLEE） based on the time-domain Volterra series. These compensation algorithms are implemented in a single-channel 50 Gb/s coherent optical single-carrier frequency-division multiplexed （CO-SCFDM） system transmitting over 10 × 80 km of standard single-mode fiber （SSMF）.

Abstract:Fiber nonlinearity mitigation is a crucial technology for extending transmission reach and increasing channel capacity in high-baud rate wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems. In this work, we propose a novel, to the best of our knowledge, architecture that combines learned modified digital back-propagation (L-MDBP) to compensate for intra-channel nonlinearity and a two-stage decision directed least mean square (DDLMS) adaptive equalizer to mitigate inter-channel nonlinearity. By leveraging globally optimized model parameters and adaptive channel estimation, the proposed scheme achieves superior performance and lower computation complexity compared with conventional DBP. Specifically, in an 8 x 64 Gbaud 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) experimental system over 1600 km of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), our approach shows a 0.30-dB Q2-factor improvement and a complexity reduction of 82.3% compared with DBP with 8 steps per span (SPS). Furthermore, we enhance the adaptability of the architecture by introducing an online transfer learning (TL) technique, which requires only 2% of initial training epochs. & COPY; 2023 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:We demonstrate the experimental implementation of photonic neural network for fiber nonlinearity compensation over a 10,080 km trans-pacific transmission link. Q-factor improvement of 0.51 dB is achieved with only 0.06 dB lower than numerical simulations.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we propose a low-complexity fiber nonlinearity impairments compensation scheme based on nonlinear step size and modified adaptive digital back propagation. To verify the feasibility of the proposed algorithm, we construct a simulation system of single channel 12.5 GBaud polarization division multiplexing 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (PDM-16QAM) optical transmission system. Comprehensive numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can not only search for the fiber nonlinear coefficient adaptively, but also has the characteristics of high performance and low complexity.
