Abstract:Nanostructured manganese oxide thin films with different crystallinity and nanomorphology were synthesized by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) in oxygen gas. Through grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction during postdeposition thermal annealing in oxidizing (air) or inert (N2 flux) atmospheres, phase changes, crystallization onsets, and orientation effects were evaluated between room temperature and 600 °C, revealing a significant impact of growth conditions and nanoscale morphology on the X-ray patterns. Compact nanocrystalline Mn3O4 films underwent first crystallization improvement between 300 and 485 °C accompanied by unit cell shrinkage, then phase transition to α-Mn2O3 above 500 °C in an oxidizing environment. In contrast, during annealing under N2 flux, crystalline Mn3O4 was stable up to 600 °C, maintaining the preferential orientation promoted by PLD. Similarly, nanoporous amorphous MnO2 films crystallized to α-Mn2O3 (>480 °C) and Mn3O4 (∼385 °C) in oxidizing and inert atmospheres, respectively; however, the amorphous porous morphology led to poorer crystallinity and an isotropic, powder-like crystal orientation. Quantitative analysis of structural parameters in the whole temperature range and microscopic and Raman analyses complemented the results. These findings shed light on the structural stability and nanoscale design achievable by PLD, followed by suitable annealing, of materials relevant for several technological applications.

Abstract:Pulsed laser deposition has been used to artificially construct the n = 3 Ruddlesden-Popper structure La(2)Sr(2)Mn(3)O(10) in epitaxial thin film form by sequentially layering La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) and SrO unit cells aided by in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction monitoring. The interval deposition technique was used to promote two-dimensional SrO growth. X-ray diffraction and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy indicated that the trilayer structure had been formed. A site ordering was found to differ from that expected thermodynamically, with the smaller Sr(2+) predominantly on the R site due to kinetic trapping of the deposited cation sequence. A dependence of the out-of-plane lattice parameter on growth pressure was interpreted as changing the oxygen content of the films. Magnetic and transport measurements on fully oxygenated films indicated a frustrated magnetic ground state characterized as a spin glass-like magnetic phase with the glass temperature T(g) ≈ 34 K. The magnetic frustration has a clear in-plane (ab) magnetic anisotropy, which is maintained up to temperatures of 150 K. Density functional theory calculations suggest competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic long-range orders, which are proposed as the origin of the low-temperature glassy state.

Abstract:The LiMn2O4 films have been prepared by 355 nm pulsed laser deposition on the heated stainless steel substrate in an O-2 gas environment. The formation of the ablated species in the laser ablation process and the effect of O-2 ambient have been investigated by both quadrupole mass spectrometry and optical emission spectroscopy. The measured mass spectra show that the main ablation products are Mn+, Li+, O-2, O, LiO2, LiMnO and lithium atomic cluster. The dependence of ambient O-2 pressure on the emission intensities of Mn containing species shows that the reactions of the ablated species with oxygen play an important role in the film deposition. The deposited LiMn2O4 films are characterized by XRD and cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract:An experimental study was conducted on controlling the growth mode of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films on SrTiO3 substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) by tuning growth temperature, pressure, and laser fluence. Different thin film morphology, crystallinity, and stoichiometry have been observed depending on growth parameters. To understand the microscopic origin, the adatom nucleation, step advance processes, and their relationship to film growth were theoretically analyzed and a growth diagram was constructed. Three boundaries between highly and poorly crystallized growth, 2D and 3D growth, stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric growth were identified in the growth diagram. A good fit of our experimental observation with the growth diagram was found. This case study demonstrates that a more comprehensive understanding of the growth mode in PLD is possible.

Abstract:We report on the optimisation of the growth conditions of manganite La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films prepared by Channel Spark Ablation (CSA). CSA belongs to pulsed electron deposition methods and its energetic and deposition parameters are quite similar to those of pulsed laser deposition. The method has been already proven to provide manganite films with good magnetic properties, but the films were generally relatively rough (a few nm coarseness). Here we show that increasing the oxygen deposition pressure with respect to previously used regimes, reduces the surface roughness down to unit cell size while maintaining a robust magnetism. We analyse in detail the effect of other deposition parameters, like accelerating voltage, discharging energy, and temperature and provide on this basis a set of optimal conditions for the growth of atomically flat films. The thicknesses for which atomically flat surface was achieved is as high as about 10-20 nm, corresponding to films with room temperature magnetism. We believe such magnetic layers represent appealing and suitable electrodes for various spintronic devices.

Abstract:The amorphous citrate process was used to synthesize powder of conducting and ferromagnetic oxide La0.65Sr0.35MnOz (z = 3) and thin films of it were prepared by pulse laser deposition (PLD). The epitaxial nature of the films had been established by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Rutherford backscattering spectrum(RBS). After anneal at 800 °C in O2 atmosphere, the thin films exhibit metallic and magnetic properties. Ferromagnetic resonant spectra reveal that there are nonuniform regions of distinct magnetization in-plane of the films, which are related to the random distribution of lanthanum in the film, as confirmed by the RBS spectrum. The magnetization measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer is different from that obtained from the ferromagnetic resonance spectrum.

Growth and Structural Characterization of h-LuMnO3 Thin Films Deposited by Direct MOCVD

Abstract:In this work, we investigated the MOCVD conditions to synthesize thin films with the hexagonal P63cm h-LuMnO3 phase as a potential low-band gap ferroelectric material. The main parameters investigated were the ratio of organometallic starting materials, substrate temperature, and annealing effect. Two different substrates were used in the study: fused silica (SiO2) glass and platinized silicon (Pt\Ti\SiO2\Si(100)). In order to investigate the thermodynamic stability and quality of the developed phases, a detailed analysis of the crystal structure, microstructure, morphology, and roughness of the films was performed by X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), Raman spectroscopy, and piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM). Molar compositions in the film within 0.93 < |Lu|/|Mn| < 1.33 were found to be suitable for obtaining a single-phase h-LuMnO3. The best films were obtained by depositions at 700 °C, followed by thermal treatments at 800 °C for long periods of up to 12 h. These films exhibited a highly crystalline hexagonal single phase with a relatively narrow direct band gap, around 1.5 eV, which is within the expected values for the h-LuMnO3 system.

Abstract:Precise manipulation of the electronic phases in strongly correlated oxides offers an avenue to control the macroscopic functionalities, thereby sparking enormous research interests in condensed matter physics. In the present paper, phase-separated La0.33Pr0.34Ca0.33MnO3 (LPCMO) thin films with a fraction of the ferromagnetic metallic phase close to the percolation threshold are successfully prepared, in which the nonvolatile and erasable switching between different electronic states is realized through cooperative effects of Au-nanodots capping and laser illumination. The deposition of Au nanodots on LPCMO thin films leads to the occurrence of a thermally inaccessible nonpercolating state at low temperatures, manifested as the absence of insulator-metal transition as temperature decreases. Such a nonpercolating state can be substantially tuned back to a percolating state by laser illumination in a nonvolatile and erasable way, accompanied by gigantic resistance drops in a wide temperature range. The formation of local oxygen vacancies near Au nanodots and thereby the modulation of mesoscopic electronic texture should be the key factor for the realization of flexible modulation of global transport properties in LPCMO thin films. Our findings pave away toward the manipulation of physical properties of the electronically phase-separated systems and the design of optically controlled electronic devices.

Abstract:Ultrafast optical excitations allow creating new metastable and hidden states in quantum materials. However, the fundamental material properties required to support new emergent order are largely unknown. Here we show for two colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganites that electronic phase separation (EPS) strongly favors non-thermal behavior and exploit this to stabilize an optically-induced conducting state. Our results shed light on the role of EPS in optical control of CMR manganites and provide guidance for the design of materials that can exhibit non-equilibrium states of matter.

Abstract:In this work, epitaxial (La1−xNdx)0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (x=0, 0.5 and 1) films have been grown on LaAlO3(001) substrates at an oxygen ambient of 400–10 mtorr by pulsed laser deposition. As a result, the oxygen contents and hence the metal–semiconductor transition temperature and the overall resistivity of the films were tuned systematically. The relationship between the transition temperature and the environmental oxygen pressure for film growth was compared with that for fabricating bulk manganate perovskites. It is found that the oxygen content of the epitaxial films is stable against post-deposition heat treatments. The electrical transport behavior of the as-deposited films remains unchanged even after in situ annealing at the deposition temperature and in oxygen pressure ranging from 2×10−6 to 760 torr. Our results suggest that the manganate films are very desirable for fabrication of the epitaxial all-perovskite-type oxide heterostructures.
Pulsed Laser Deposition of Rocksalt Magnetic Binary Oxides

Abstract:Here we systematically explore the use of pulsed laser deposition technique (PLD) to grow three basic oxides that have rocksalt structure but different chemical stability in the ambient atmosphere: NiO (stable), MnO (metastable) and EuO (unstable). By tuning laser fluence, an epitaxial single-phase nickel oxide thin-film growth can be achieved in a wide range of temperatures from 10 to 750 °C. At the lowest growth temperature, the out-of-plane strain raises to 1.5%, which is five times bigger than that in a NiO film grown at 750 °C. MnO thin films that had long-range ordered were successfully deposited on the MgO substrates after appropriate tuning of deposition parameters. The growth of MnO phase was strongly influenced by substrate temperature and laser fluence. EuO films with satisfactory quality were deposited by PLD after oxygen availability had been minimized. Synthesis of EuO thin films at rather low growth temperature prevented thermally-driven lattice relaxation and allowed growth of strained films. Overall, PLD was a quick and reliable method to grow binary oxides with rocksalt structure in high quality that can satisfy requirements for applications and for basic research.

Abstract:Manganese oxide thin films were deposited on glass substrates by electron gun evaporation method under ultra-high vacuum condition. Thickness of the layers was measured 60 and 120 nm, by a quartz crystal method. Deposition conditions such as deposition rate, vacuum pressure, incidence of angle and substrate temperature were the same for all layers. After producing pure manganese oxide layers a post-annealing method was used in the presence of a uniform oxygen flow of 300 (sccm) and at 600 K annealing temperature. Optical reflectance and transmittance of the layers were measured in the wavelength of 350–850 nm by a spectrophotometer. Kramers–Kronig relations were used to calculate the optical constant. The influence of annealing temperature and oxygen flow on optical properties is investigated. It was found that film thickness and deposition angle plays an important role on the nanostructures as well as optical properties of layers and cause significant variations in behavior of thin manganese oxide films. The physical properties of materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), FE-SEM, AFM, EDX, and UV–Vis techniques.

Abstract:Laser ablation in liquids (LAL) has emerged as a versatile approach for the synthesis of alloy particles and oxide nanomaterials. However, complex chemical reactions often take place during synthesis due to inevitable atomization and ionization of the target materials and decomposition/hydrolysis of solvent/solution molecules, making it difficult to understand the particle formation mechanisms. In this paper, a possible route for the formation of FeMn alloy nanoparticles as well as MnOx nanoparticles, -sheets, and -fibers by LAL is presented. The observed structural, compositional, and morphological variations are clarified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The studies suggest that a reaction between Mn atoms and Fe ions followed by surface oxidation result in nonstoichiometric synthesis of Fe-rich FeMn@FeMn2O4 core-shell alloy particles. Interestingly, a phase transformation from Mn3O4 to Mn2O3 and finally to Ramsdellite gamma-MnO2 is accompanied by a morphology change from nanosheets to nanofibers in gradually increasing oxidizing environments. High-resolution TEM images reveal that the particle-attachment mechanism dominates the growth of different manganese oxides.

Abstract:Epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films have been grown on LaAlO3(001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition under different target-plume-substrate configurations. Outgrowths of various shape and size from some of the manganite films are observed. When the substrate is placed within the visible laser-produced energetic plasma plume, the deposited films are outgrowth-free and exhibit good crystallinity and high electrical conductivity. The formation mechanisms and control measures of the outgrowths in pulsed laser deposited manganite films are discussed.

Abstract:Surface Acoustic Waves on piezoelectric substrates can be used to investigate the dynamic conductivity of thin films in a non-contact and very sensitive way, especially at low conductivities. Here, we report on such surface acoustic wave studies to characterize thin manganite film like La0.67Ca0.33MnO3, exhibiting a Jan Teller effect with a strong electron phonon interaction and a metal insulator transition at high temperatures. We report on the deposition of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 on piezoelectric substrates (LiNbO3 in different crystal cuts) employing a pulsed laser deposition technique. The structural qualities of the thin films are examined by X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. For the electrical characterization, we employ the surface acoustic wave technique, accompanied by conventional DC-resistance measurements for comparison.

Abstract:We report on the structural, transport, and magnetic properties of Lao(0.67)Sr(0.33)MnO(x) thin films grown in vacuum by pulsed-laser deposition. The as-grown thin films have both the matrix La,1.34Sr0.66MnO4 phase with K2NiF4 structure and an embedded MnO phase. The electrical transport and magnetic properties of the films are determined mainly by those of the matrix phase. By annealing, the as-grown thin films can be transformed into the normal La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 Single phase, which shows the expected colossal magnetoresistance effect. Based on the composition of the matrix phase, and the structural, electrical, and magnetic properties of the films, we propose that the matrix phase is possibly electron doped with a mixed valence of Mn2+/Mn3+ instead of the Mn3+/Mn4+ as in the hole-doped case.

Abstract:Atomically flat, epitaxial, and stoichiometric thin films of the electronically phase separated compound (La$_{0.5}$Pr$_{0.5}$)$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ were grown on as-received and treated NdGaO$_{3}$ substrates by fine tuning of oxygen pressure during deposition. Optimal thin films with step flow growth mode show superior physical properties compared to thin films grown in off-optimal oxygen pressures, {\em viz.} the highest maximum temperature coefficient of resistance, the highest peak-resistivity temperature, and reduced coercive fields. Transport, magnetization, and x-ray diffraction measurements indicate that the oxygen pressure during growth plays a critical role in the formation of oxygen vacancies, cation vacancies, and grain boundaries.

Abstract:Two-dimensional manganese oxide layers have been grown on Pd(100) and have been characterized by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The complex surface phase diagram of MnOx on Pd(100) is reported, where nine different novel Mn oxide phases have been detected as a function of the chemical potential of oxygen mO. Three regions of the chemical potential of oxygen can be identified, in which structurally related oxide phases are formed, often in coexistence at the surface. The different regions of mO are reflected in the oxidation states of the respective Mn oxide nanolayers as revealed by the Mn 2p and O 1s XPS binding energies. The MnOx nanolayers form two-dimensional wetting layers and it is speculated that they mediate the epitaxial growth of MnO on Pd(100) by providing structurally graded interfaces.

Abstract:Discovery of structure-property relationships in thin film alloys of complex metal oxides enabled by high-throughput materials synthesis and characterization facilities is demonstrated here with a case-study. Thin films of binary transition metal oxides (Ti-Zn) are prepared by pulsed laser deposition with continuously varying Ti:Zn ratio, creating combinatorial samples for exploration of the properties of this material family. The atomic structure and electronic properties are probed by spatially resolved techniques including x-ray absorption near edge structures (XANES) and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) at the Ti and Zn K-edge, x-ray diffraction, and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The observed properties as a function of Ti:Zn ratio are resolved into mixtures of five distinguishable phases by deploying multivariate curve resolution analysis on the XANES spectral series, under constraints set by results from the other characterization techniques. First-principles computations based on density function theory connect the observed properties of each distinct phase with structural and spectral characteristics of crystalline polymorphs of Ti-Zn oxide.
