Abstract:Cloud computing is a suitable platform to execute the deadline-constrained scientific workflows which are typical big data applications and often require many hours to finish. Moreover, the problem of energy consumption has become one of the major concerns in clouds. In this paper, we present a cost and energy aware scheduling (CEAS) algorithm for cloud scheduler to minimize the execution cost of workflow and reduce the energy consumption while meeting the deadline constraint. The CEAS algorithm consists of five sub-algorithms. First, we use the VM selection algorithm which applies the concept of cost utility to map tasks to their optimal virtual machine (VM) types by the sub-makespan constraint. Then, two tasks merging methods are employed to reduce execution cost and energy consumption of workflow. Further, In order to reuse the idle VM instances which have been leased, the VM reuse policy is also proposed. Finally, the scheme of slack time reclamation is utilized to save energy of leased VM instances. According to the time complexity analysis, we conclude that the time complexity of each sub-algorithm is polynomial. The CEAS algorithm is evaluated using Cloudsim and four real-world scientific workflow applications, which demonstrates that it outperforms the related well-known approaches.

Abstract:Nowadays, cloud computing providers offer to their users the computing resources that are capable of operating on the CPU frequency in between minimum and maximum values. This gives to the users a big number of Virtual Machine(VM) configurations to choose from when planning for the execution of their applications. On the user side, higher CPU frequency incurs a high monetary cost, on the providers side higher CPU frequency incurs high energy consumption. The reduction rate of cost and the reduction rate of energy differ from each other. A big challenge that arises is how to select the proper CPU frequency that can lead to energy-cost-efficient configuration and strike a good balance between energy-cost and deadline. In this paper, an algorithm that achieves energy-cost-aware VM provisioning by selecting different CPU frequencies for each VM in order to execute workflow within a deadline is presented.

Abstract:Nowadays, the vast majority of workflow applications are deploying on clouds for fast execution. Meanwhile, the market-oriented and price-driven characteristics of cloud computing make cost become a factor that cannot be ignored and challenge traditional workflow scheduling algorithms which focus only on the optimization of finish time (a.k.a makespan). A general way to consider cost and makespan at the same time is to model the problem as a constrained optimization problem. In this paper, we study the deadline-constrained and cost-minimization workflow scheduling problem, and propose the cost-efficient scheduling with deadline constraint (CESDC) algorithm. CESDC is a typical list scheduling algorithm, and contains three scheduling phases: deadline distribution, task prioritization and service selection. CESDC firstly distributes deadline to tasks by their levels and workloads, then prioritizes tasks according to a modified upward rank, and finally assigns services to tasks which meets the sub-deadline and minimizes the cost. Experiment results demonstrate that CESDC performs better in terms of success ratio and cost than those of several state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:As one of the latest market-oriented resource provisioning paradigms, cloud computing has been widely adopted by a growing number of consumers due to its powerful computing ability and storage ability. Although cloud computing can achieve effective cost reduction and convenience enhancement in the development of large-scale applications, it results in a complex cost optimization problem for data-dependent tasks represented by a workflow. All tasks in a workflow should be scheduled according to a proper strategy such that the cost is minimized and the precedence constraints and timing requirements are satisfied. In this paper, we study the cost optimization problem of deadline constrained workflows on cloud computing, and propose two list scheduling algorithms named Look-back Workflow Scheduling (LBWS) and Structure Aware Workflow Scheduling (SAWS) to solve the problem. LBWS distributes the deadline over the workflow as sub-deadlines to tasks in different levels, and schedules the tasks according to their priorities to the resources which meet their sub-deadlines and the best time-cost trade off requirements. Compared with LBWS, SAWS considers tasks allocated to the same level at a time and provisions resources with minimum cost to these tasks. Experiments on scientific workflow applications with different data and computational characteristics are conducted to show that, the proposed approaches can achieve better performance in terms of success rate and monetary cost.

Abstract:SummaryThere is an increasing interest for cloud services to be provided in a more energy‐efficient way. The growing deployment of large‐scale, complex workflow applications onto cloud computing hosts are facing with crucial challenges in reducing the energy consumption without violating certain quality of service. Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) is a power management technique commonly used to lower the processor frequency and decrease the energy consumption in modern computing systems. However, as lowering processor frequency may result in increased idle time on processors, which may in turn lead to increased overall energy consumption, scaling the processor frequency as low as possible may not always be energy‐efficient. In this paper, we consider cloud hosts with the DVFS technique and focus on the problem of scaling frequency to reduce overall energy consumption of a workflow given an allocation of tasks to hosts and a deadline to complete the execution. We propose a novel scheduling heuristic, which takes the system and application characteristics and the overall energy consumption into account when making frequency scaling decision. The proposed heuristic is evaluated using simulation with four different real‐world applications. The observed results indicate that our heuristic can achieve significant energy saving and outperform the existing approaches. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Electricity prices differ during different time periods and change from place to place. Cloud workflow applications often require geo-distributed data which is transmitted among heterogeneous servers in intra- and inter- data centers. Such varying electricity prices and data transmission time bring great challenges when optimizing the energy cost for scheduling tasks in workflow applications to heterogeneous servers in cloud data centers. In this article, we minimize the total electricity cost in a deadline constrained energy-aware workflow scheduling problem with data being geographically distributed across data centers. A scheduling algorithm is proposed. Strategies are developed to sequence workflow applications, divide deadlines and sort tasks. An adaptive local search method is presented to improve solutions during the search process which dynamically balances intensification using neighborhood structures of increasing size. Components and parameter values are statistically calibrated over a comprehensive set of random instances. The proposed algorithm is compared to modified classical algorithms for similar problems. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposal for the considered problem.

Abstract:In recent years, more and more large-scale data processing and computing workflow applications run on heterogeneous clouds. Such cloud applications with precedence-constrained tasks are usually deadline-constrained and their scheduling is an essential problem faced by cloud providers. Moreover, minimizing the workflow execution cost based on cloud billing periods is also a complex and challenging problem for clouds. In realizing this, we first model the workflow applications as I/O Data-aware Directed Acyclic Graph (DDAG), according to clouds with global storage systems. Then, we mathematically state this deadline-constrained workflow scheduling problem with the goal of minimum execution financial cost. We also prove that the time complexity of this problem is NP-hard by deducing from a multidimensional multiple-choice knapsack problem. Third, we propose a heuristic cost-efficient task scheduling strategy called CETSS, which includes workflow DDAG model building, task subdeadline initialization, greedy workflow scheduling algorithm, and task adjusting method. The greedy workflow scheduling algorithm mainly consists of dynamical task renting billing period sharing method and unscheduled task subdeadline relax technique. We perform rigorous simulations on some synthetic randomly generated applications and real-world applications, such as Epigenomics, CyberShake, and LIGO. The experimental results clearly demonstrate that our proposed heuristic CETSS outperforms the existing algorithms and can effective save the total workflow execution cost. In particular, CETSS is very suitable for large workflow applications.

Abstract:It is challenging to handle the non-linear power consumption model, complex workflow structures, and diverse user-defined deadlines for energy-efficient workflow scheduling in sustainable cloud computing. Although metaheuristics are very attractive to solve this problem, most of the existing work regards the problem as a black-box and ignores the use of domain knowledge. To make up for their shortcomings, this paper tailors an energy-aware intelligent scheduling algorithm (EIS) with three new mechanisms. First, we derive the optimal execution time that minimizes energy consumption for each task on a given resource. Second, based on the optimal execution time of each workflow task, the EIS distributes the workflow slack time (difference between its completion time and deadline) to reduce the voltages and frequencies of task executions for energy saving. Third, the EIS mines the idle time gaps caused by task precedence constraints to further reduce dynamic energy consumption whilst satisfying workflows' deadline constraints. To measure the performance of the EIS, we conduct extensive comparison experiments based on actual workflow applications. The results demonstrate that the energy consumption of the EIS is much lower than that of the competitors under different deadlines, and has a faster descend rate with the evolution process.

Abstract:Nowadays, heterogeneous cloud resources are charged by cloud providers according to the pay-as-you-go pricing model. To execute workflow applications in clouds under deadline constraints, cloud resources have to be utilized appropriately and judiciously, challenging traditional workflow scheduling algorithms, which are either inapplicable to the cloud environment or fail to fully exploit the features of scheduling problem for cost optimization. In this paper, we propose a heuristic algorithm CSDW and a meta-heuristic algorithm N-WOA to minimize the execution cost of the given workflow subject to the deadline constraint in clouds. CSDW first assigns the sub-deadline to each task based on the modified probabilistic upward rank, and then tasks are sorted and mapped to appropriate instances, finally instance-type upgrading and downgrading method is adopted to further accelerate workflow execution and reduce the total cost, respectively. N-WOA employs whale optimization algorithm for deadline-constrained cost optimization by refining the task ordering step in CSDW. By simulation experiments on scientific workflows with existing algorithms, the results demonstrate the capability of the proposed algorithms in meeting the deadlines and reducing the execution costs, CSDW is highly competitive and N-WOA achieves the best performance in all cases.

Abstract:The utilization of cloud environments to deploy scientific workflow applications is an emerging trend in scientific community. In this area, the main issue is the scheduling of workflows, which is known as an NP-complete problem. Apart from respecting user-defined deadline and budget, energy consumption is a major concern for cloud providers in implementing the scheduling strategy. The types and the number of virtual machines (VMs) used are determinant to handle those issues, and their determination is highly influenced by the structure of the workflow. In this paper, we propose two workflow scheduling algorithms that take advantage of the structural properties of the workflows. The first algorithm is called Structure-based Multi-objective Workflow Scheduling with an Optimal instance type (SMWSO). It introduces a new approach to determine the optimal instance type along with the optimal number of VMs to be provisioned. We also consider the use of heterogeneous VMs in the Structure-based Multi-objective Workflow Scheduling with Heterogeneous instance types (SMWSH), to highlight the algorithm's strength within the heterogeneous environment. The simulation results show that our proposal produces better energy-efficiency in 80% of workflow/workload scenarios, and save more than 50% overall energy compared to a recent state-of-the-art algorithm.

Abstract:Scientific workflow applications are collections of several structured activities and fine-grained computational tasks. Scientific workflow scheduling in cloud computing is a challenging research topic due to its distinctive features. In cloud environments, it has become critical to perform efficient task scheduling resulting in reduced scheduling overhead, minimized cost and maximized resource utilization while still meeting the user-specified overall deadline. This paper proposes a strategy, Dynamic Scheduling of Bag of Tasks based workflows (DSB), for scheduling scientific workflows with the aim to minimize financial cost of leasing Virtual Machines (VMs) under a user-defined deadline constraint. The proposed model groups the workflow into Bag of Tasks (BoTs) based on data dependency and priority constraints and thereafter optimizes the allocation and scheduling of BoTs on elastic, heterogeneous and dynamically provisioned cloud resources called VMs in order to attain the proposed method’s objectives. The proposed approach considers pay-as-you-go Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) clouds having inherent features such as elasticity, abundance, heterogeneity and VM provisioning delays. A trace-based simulation using benchmark scientific workflows representing real world applications, demonstrates a significant reduction in workflow computation cost while the workflow deadline is met. The results validate that the proposed model produces better success rates to meet deadlines and cost efficiencies in comparison to adapted state-of-the-art algorithms for similar problems.

Abstract:Cloud computing is the fastest growing distributed computing paradigm that provides online IT resources on demand by following a pay-as-you-go billing model. The success of this computing paradigm enables cloud providers to offer an extensive collection of parallel computing resources to deal with Big Data workflow scheduling problems. Although, workflow scheduling has been extensively studied, however, most of them are unable to achieve user-specified deadline constraints at the cheap cost. In this paper, a Dynamic Cost-Efficient Deadline-Aware (DCEDA) heuristic algorithm is proposed for scheduling Big Data workflow that produces the cheapest schedule while achieving the deadline constraints. DCEDA dynamically takes appropriate scheduling decisions for workflow tasks based on the fact that deadline constraint is not violated in the future. Also, it continuously monitors the VM pool for identifying the active idle VMs that incur extra costs and overheads, and subsequently de-provision them. The experimental analysis based on Montage workflow and randomly generated synthetic workflow with various characteristics prove that DCEDA delivers better performance in comparison to the existing algorithms.

Abstract:Energy efficiency is a major concern in modern high performance computing (HPC) systems and a power-aware scheduling approach is a promising way to achieve that. While there are a number of studies in power-aware scheduling by means of dynamic power management (DPM) and/or dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) techniques, most of them only consider scheduling at a steady state. However, HPC applications like scientific visualization often need deadline constraints to guarantee timely completion. In this paper we present power-aware scheduling algorithms with deadline constraints for heterogeneous systems. We formulate the problem by extending the traditional multiprocessor scheduling and design approximation algorithms with analysis on the worst-case performance. We also present a pricing scheme for tasks in the way that the price of a task varies as its energy usage as well as largely depending on the tightness of its deadline. Last we extend the proposed algorithm to the control dependence graph and the online case which is more realistic. Through the extensive experiments, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves near-optimal energy efficiency, on average 16.4% better for synthetic workload and 12.9% better for realistic workload than the EDD (Earliest Due Date)-based algorithm; The extended online algorithm also outperforms the EDF (Earliest Deadline First)-based algorithm with an average up to 26% of energy saving and 22% of deadline satisfaction. It is experimentally shown as well that the pricing scheme provides a flexible trade-off between deadline tightness and price.

Abstract:With the development of cloud computing, the coexistence of multiple cloud service providers appears in the current cloud market. Due to heterogeneous instance types, different bandwidths and various price models among multiple clouds, it is a challenging issue to schedule a deadline-constrained scientific workflow across multiple clouds. Existing research for workflow scheduling are mostly in the traditional distributed computing environment (such as grid), and only a few primal contributions are made in the cloud environment. This paper proposes a scheduling strategy for a deadline-constrained scientific workflow across multiple clouds. In order to minimize the execution cost of the workflow while meeting its deadline, our strategy utilizes the discrete particle swarm optimization technique, and adopts randomly two-point crossover operator and randomly single point mutation operator of the genetic algorithm. Besides, the strategy optimizes the performance for both computation cost and data transfer cost across multiple clouds. Our strategy is evaluated through well-known workflows, and experimental results show that it performs better than other state-of-the-art strategies.

Abstract:The high scientific applications which contain thousands of tasks are usually executed in virtulized cloud for many benefits. With the increment of the processing capability of the cloud system, the computation energy is significantly consumed along. Thus efficient energy consumption methods are quite necessary to save the energy cost. In this paper, the independent task scheduling problem in a cloud data center is considered. It is a big challenge to achieve the tradeoff between the minimization of computation energy and user-defined deadlines. A heuristic is proposed which consist of an energy efficient task sequencing method and a virtual machine searching strategy. Experimental results show that the proposed heuristic clearly outperforms the other algorithms.
