Abstract:Security is increasingly critical for various scientific workflows that are big data applications and typically take quite amount of time being executed on large-scale distributed infrastructures. Cloud computing platform is such an infrastructure that can enable dynamic resource scaling on demand. Nevertheless, based on pay-per-use and hourly-based pricing model, users should pay attention to the cost incurred by renting virtual machines (VMs) from cloud data centers. Meanwhile, workflow tasks are generally heterogeneous and require different instance series (i.e., computing optimized, memory optimized, storage optimized, etc.). In this paper, we propose a security and cost aware scheduling (SCAS) algorithm for heterogeneous tasks of scientific workflow in clouds. Our proposed algorithm is based on the meta-heuristic optimization technique, particle swarm optimization (PSO), the coding strategy of which is devised to minimize the total workflow execution cost while meeting the deadline and risk rate constraints. Extensive experiments using three real-world scientific workflow applications, as well as CloudSim simulation framework, demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of our algorithm.

Abstract:In recent years, more and more large-scale data processing and computing workflow applications run on heterogeneous clouds. Such cloud applications with precedence-constrained tasks are usually deadline-constrained and their scheduling is an essential problem faced by cloud providers. Moreover, minimizing the workflow execution cost based on cloud billing periods is also a complex and challenging problem for clouds. In realizing this, we first model the workflow applications as I/O Data-aware Directed Acyclic Graph (DDAG), according to clouds with global storage systems. Then, we mathematically state this deadline-constrained workflow scheduling problem with the goal of minimum execution financial cost. We also prove that the time complexity of this problem is NP-hard by deducing from a multidimensional multiple-choice knapsack problem. Third, we propose a heuristic cost-efficient task scheduling strategy called CETSS, which includes workflow DDAG model building, task subdeadline initialization, greedy workflow scheduling algorithm, and task adjusting method. The greedy workflow scheduling algorithm mainly consists of dynamical task renting billing period sharing method and unscheduled task subdeadline relax technique. We perform rigorous simulations on some synthetic randomly generated applications and real-world applications, such as Epigenomics, CyberShake, and LIGO. The experimental results clearly demonstrate that our proposed heuristic CETSS outperforms the existing algorithms and can effective save the total workflow execution cost. In particular, CETSS is very suitable for large workflow applications.

Cost and Reliability Aware Scheduling of Workflows Across Multiple Clouds with Security Constraints

Abstract:Many real-world scientific workflows can be represented by a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG), where each node represents a task and a directed edge signifies a dependency between two tasks. Due to the increasing computational resource requirements of these workflows, they are deployed on multi-cloud systems for execution. In this paper, we propose a scheduling algorithm that allocates resources to the tasks present in the workflow using an efficient list-scheduling approach based on the parameters cost, processing time, and reliability. Next, for a given a task-resource mapping, we propose a cipher assignment algorithm that assigns security services to edges responsible for transferring data in time-optimal manner subject to a given security constraint. The proposed algorithms have been analyzed to understand their time and space requirements. We implement the proposed scheduling and cipher assignment algorithm and experimented with two real-world scientific workflows namely Epigenomics and Cybershake. We compare the performance of the proposed scheduling algorithm with the state-of-art evolutionary methods. We observe that our method outperforms the state-of-art methods always in terms of cost and reliability, and is inferior in terms of makespan in some cases.

Abstract:With the development of cloud computing, the coexistence of multiple cloud service providers appears in the current cloud market. Due to heterogeneous instance types, different bandwidths and various price models among multiple clouds, it is a challenging issue to schedule a deadline-constrained scientific workflow across multiple clouds. Existing research for workflow scheduling are mostly in the traditional distributed computing environment (such as grid), and only a few primal contributions are made in the cloud environment. This paper proposes a scheduling strategy for a deadline-constrained scientific workflow across multiple clouds. In order to minimize the execution cost of the workflow while meeting its deadline, our strategy utilizes the discrete particle swarm optimization technique, and adopts randomly two-point crossover operator and randomly single point mutation operator of the genetic algorithm. Besides, the strategy optimizes the performance for both computation cost and data transfer cost across multiple clouds. Our strategy is evaluated through well-known workflows, and experimental results show that it performs better than other state-of-the-art strategies.

Abstract:Nowadays, the vast majority of workflow applications are deploying on clouds for fast execution. Meanwhile, the market-oriented and price-driven characteristics of cloud computing make cost become a factor that cannot be ignored and challenge traditional workflow scheduling algorithms which focus only on the optimization of finish time (a.k.a makespan). A general way to consider cost and makespan at the same time is to model the problem as a constrained optimization problem. In this paper, we study the deadline-constrained and cost-minimization workflow scheduling problem, and propose the cost-efficient scheduling with deadline constraint (CESDC) algorithm. CESDC is a typical list scheduling algorithm, and contains three scheduling phases: deadline distribution, task prioritization and service selection. CESDC firstly distributes deadline to tasks by their levels and workloads, then prioritizes tasks according to a modified upward rank, and finally assigns services to tasks which meets the sub-deadline and minimizes the cost. Experiment results demonstrate that CESDC performs better in terms of success ratio and cost than those of several state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:Cloud computing is a suitable platform to execute the deadline-constrained scientific workflows which are typical big data applications and often require many hours to finish. Moreover, the problem of energy consumption has become one of the major concerns in clouds. In this paper, we present a cost and energy aware scheduling (CEAS) algorithm for cloud scheduler to minimize the execution cost of workflow and reduce the energy consumption while meeting the deadline constraint. The CEAS algorithm consists of five sub-algorithms. First, we use the VM selection algorithm which applies the concept of cost utility to map tasks to their optimal virtual machine (VM) types by the sub-makespan constraint. Then, two tasks merging methods are employed to reduce execution cost and energy consumption of workflow. Further, In order to reuse the idle VM instances which have been leased, the VM reuse policy is also proposed. Finally, the scheme of slack time reclamation is utilized to save energy of leased VM instances. According to the time complexity analysis, we conclude that the time complexity of each sub-algorithm is polynomial. The CEAS algorithm is evaluated using Cloudsim and four real-world scientific workflow applications, which demonstrates that it outperforms the related well-known approaches.

Abstract:According to the research and analysis on the existing task scheduling strategy of scientific workflow under the cloud environment,a two-step task scheduling strategy was proposed.This strategy aimed at solving or alleviating the phenomenon of resource idle in Heterogeneous Earliest Finish Time(HEFT) algorithm and SHEFT algorithm.Along with the characteristics of cloud computing environment,it derives from the SHEFT algorithm.It can make the most use of the resources idle time and get the minimum makespan.The experiments and performance analysis for the scheduling strategy show that it has a significant improvement in the workflow makespan and resource utilization.

Abstract:In order to solve the security threats that workflow scheduling problems faced in cloud computing environments,firstly,this paper quantified the security of tasks and virtual machine resources using the cloud model,and measured users' satisfaction with the security of tasks assigned to the virtual resources through the security cloud similarity. Then,it defined a cloud workflow scheduling model considering security,completion time and cost constraints,and proposed a cloud workflow scheduling algorithm based on discrete particle swarm optimization. At last,it verified the proposed algorithm with the simulation experiment. Compared with other similar algorithms,simulation results show that the algorithm has better comprehensive performance in the security utility value,completion time,cost and load balance.

Abstract:Nowadays cloud service providers usually offer users virtual machines with various combinations of configurations and prices. As this new service scheme emerges, the problem of choosing the cost-minimized combination under a deadline constraint is becoming more complex for users. The complexity of determining the cost-minimized combination may be resulted from different causes: the characteristics of user applications, and providers' setting on the configurations and pricing of virtual machine. In this paper, we proposed an algorithm with two variants to help the users to schedule their workflow applications on clouds so that the cost can be minimized and the deadline constraints can be satisfied. The proposed algorithm is evaluated by extensive simulation experiments with diverse experimental settings.

Abstract:Cloud computing is an extremely important infrastructure used to perform tasks over processing units. Despite its numerous benefits, a cloud platform has several challenges preventing it from carrying out an efficient workflow submission. One of these is linked to task scheduling. An optimization problem related to this is the maximal determination of cloud computing scheduling criteria. Existing methods have been unable to find the quality of service (QoS) limits of users- like meeting the economic restrictions and reduction of the makespan. Of all these methods, the Heterogeneous Earliest Finish Time (HEFT) algorithm produces the maximum outcomes for scheduling tasks in a heterogeneous environment in a reduced time. Reviewed literature proves that HEFT is efficient in terms of execution time and quality of schedule. The HEFT algorithm makes use of average communication and computation costs as weights in the DAG. In some cases, however, the average cost of computation and selecting the first empty slot may not be enough for a good solution to be produced. In this paper, we propose different HEFT algorithm versions altered to produce improved results. In the first stage (rank generation), we execute several methodologies to calculate the ranks, and in the second stage, we alter how the empty slots are selected for the task scheduling. These alterations do not add any cost to the primary HEFT algorithm, and reduce the makespan of the virtual machines' workflow submissions. Our findings suggest that the altered versions of the HEFT algorithm have a better performance than the basic HEFT algorithm regarding decreased schedule length of the workflow problems.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of security threats on workflow scheduling in cloud computing environments, the security of tasks and virtual machine resources are quantified using a cloud model, and the users' satisfaction degree with the security of tasks assigned to the virtual resources is measured through the similarity of the security cloud. On this basis, combined with security, completion time and cost constraints, an optimized cloud workflow scheduling algorithm is proposed using a discrete particle swarm. The particle in the particle swarm indicates a different cloud workflow scheduling scheme. The particle changes its velocity and position using the evolution equation of the standard particle swarm algorithm, which ensures that it is a feasible solution through the feasible solution adjustment strategies. The simulation experiment results show that the algorithm has better comprehensive performance with respect to the security utility, completion time, cost and load balance compared to other similar algorithms.

Abstract:As one of market-oriented distributed systems, cloud computing has become popular in recent years. In scientific cloud workflows, scheduling optimization is an important and challenging issue, especially at the task level. Traditional approaches do not consider the time-sharing characteristic of virtual machine (VM), and they cannot reduce the makespan of scheduler within a datacenter effectively. However VM can execute multiple parallel tasks simultaneously. In this paper, with consideration of cost constraint, we present novel efficient task-level Ant Colony Optimization scheduling based on time-sharing VM. The experimental simulation shows that our scheduling can make better use of time-sharing VM to optimize the makespan of scheduler within a datacenter. Therefore, our scheduling can run tasks more efficiently.

Abstract:SUMMARYDue to its advantages of cost‐effectiveness, on‐demand provisioning and easy for sharing, cloud computing has grown in popularity with the research community for deploying scientific applications such as workflows. Although such interests continue growing and scientific workflows are widely deployed in collaborative cloud environments that consist of a number of data centers, there is an urgent need for exploiting strategies which can place application datasets across globally distributed data centers and schedule tasks according to the data layout to reduce both latency and makespan for workflow execution. In this paper, by utilizing dependencies among datasets and tasks, we propose an efficient data and task coscheduling strategy that can place input datasets in a load balance way and meanwhile, group the mostly related datasets and tasks together. Moreover, data staging is used to overlap task execution with data transmission in order to shorten the start time of tasks. We build a simulation environment on Tianhe supercomputer for evaluating the proposed strategy and run simulations by random and realistic workflows. The results demonstrate that the proposed strategy can effectively improve scheduling performance while reducing the total volume of data transfer across data centers. Abstract:Scheduling scientific workflows in clouds under deadline constraint is a challenging problem since public clouds usually provide various types of instances that are rented on-demand and charged based on time period. To solve this problem, the paper proposes DCWS, a deadline-constrained workflow scheduling algorithm for cost-effective execution of scientific workflows in clouds. DCWS is a list-based scheduling algorithm that uses several strategies to reduce the monetary cost under deadline constraint: i) sub-deadlines are assigned for individual tasks by considering the probabilities that tasks are placed together; ii) instance type upgrading and downgrading strategies are designed to accelerate workflow execution and reduce the total cost respectively; iii) task backfilling and sub-deadline violation penalizing are used to improve resource utilization and ensure that the sub-deadlines of the individual tasks are satisfied. Experimental results demonstrate that in comparison with two state-of-the-art algorithms, DCWS is effective on reducing monetary cost under deadline constraint.

Abstract:Abstract Large-scale applications of Internet of things (IoT), which require considerable computing tasks and storage resources, are increasingly deployed in cloud environments. Compared with the traditional computing model, characteristics of the cloud such as pay-as-you-go, unlimited expansion, and dynamic acquisition represent different conveniences for these applications using the IoT architecture. One of the major challenges is to satisfy the quality of service requirements while assigning resources to tasks. In this paper, we propose a deadline and cost-aware scheduling algorithm that minimizes the execution cost of a workflow under deadline constraints in the infrastructure as a service (IaaS) model. Considering the virtual machine (VM) performance variation and acquisition delay, we first divide tasks into different levels according to the topological structure so that no dependency exists between tasks at the same level. Three strings are used to code the genes in the proposed algorithm to better reflect the heterogeneous and resilient characteristics of cloud environments. Then, HEFT is used to generate individuals with the minimum completion time and cost. Novel schemes are developed for crossover and mutation to increase the diversity of the solutions. Based on this process, a task scheduling method that considers cost and deadlines is proposed. Experiments on workflows that simulate the structured tasks of the IoT demonstrate that our algorithm achieves a high success rate and performs well compared to state-of-the-art algorithms.

Abstract:Nowadays, heterogeneous cloud resources are charged by cloud providers according to the pay-as-you-go pricing model. To execute workflow applications in clouds under deadline constraints, cloud resources have to be utilized appropriately and judiciously, challenging traditional workflow scheduling algorithms, which are either inapplicable to the cloud environment or fail to fully exploit the features of scheduling problem for cost optimization. In this paper, we propose a heuristic algorithm CSDW and a meta-heuristic algorithm N-WOA to minimize the execution cost of the given workflow subject to the deadline constraint in clouds. CSDW first assigns the sub-deadline to each task based on the modified probabilistic upward rank, and then tasks are sorted and mapped to appropriate instances, finally instance-type upgrading and downgrading method is adopted to further accelerate workflow execution and reduce the total cost, respectively. N-WOA employs whale optimization algorithm for deadline-constrained cost optimization by refining the task ordering step in CSDW. By simulation experiments on scientific workflows with existing algorithms, the results demonstrate the capability of the proposed algorithms in meeting the deadlines and reducing the execution costs, CSDW is highly competitive and N-WOA achieves the best performance in all cases.
A Budget and Deadline Aware Scientific Workflow Resource Provisioning and Scheduling Mechanism for Cloud

Abstract:Currently in large-scale scientific experiments, scientists often submit scientific workflow jobs at different time. From the view of system, the entire workload is a stream of jobs submitted at an unpredictable time and different job has different priority and deadline. Moreover the cost of performing these jobs cannot exceed a certain budget constraint. Therefore how to perform scientific workflow applications efficiently in cloud has become the urgent problem. However most of existing work didn't consider unpredictable submission time of jobs, as well as budget and deadline constrains. In this paper, we design an elastic resource provisioning and task scheduling mechanism to perform scientific workflows in cloud. Our goal is to complete as many high-priority workflows as possible under budget and deadline constrains. This mechanism consists of three phases: workflow preprocessing, elastic resource provisioning and task scheduling. We perform evaluation with real AMS experiment scientific computing data under different budget constraints. We also consider inaccurate task execution time, VM provisioning delays and task failures in evaluation. The results show that our mechanism achieves a better performance than these reference mechanisms. In addition, the inaccurate task execution time, VM provisioning delays, and task failures do not bring significant impact to mechanism's performance.

Abstract:Providing resources and services from multiple clouds is becoming an increasingly promising paradigm. Workflow applications are becoming increasingly computation-intensive or data-intensive, with its resource requirement being maintained from multicloud environment in terms of pay-per-use pricing mechanism. Existing works of cloud workflow scheduling primarily target optimizing makespan or cost. However, the reliability of workflow scheduling is also a critical concern and even the most important metric of QoS (quality of service). In this paper, a multi-objective scheduling (MOS) algorithm for scientific workflow in multicloud environment is proposed, the aim of which is to minimize workflow makespan and cost simultaneously while satisfying the reliability constraint. The proposed MOS algorithm is according to particle swarm optimization (PSO) technology, and the corresponding coding strategy takes both the tasks execution location and tasks order of data transmission into consideration. On the basis of real-world scientific workflow models, extensive simulation experiments demonstrate the significant multi-objective performances improvement of MOS algorithm over the CMOHEFT algorithm and the RANDOM algorithm.

Abstract:Scientific workflow is a common model to organize large scientific computations. It borrows the concept of workflow in business activities to manage the complicated processes in scientific computing automatically or semi-automatically. The workflow scheduling, which maps tasks in workflows to parallel computing resources, has been extensively studied over years. In recent years, with the rise of cloud computing as a new large-scale distributed computing model, it is of great significance to study workflow scheduling problem in the cloud. Compared with traditional distributed computing platforms, cloud platforms have unique characteristics such as the self-service resource management model and the payas-you-go billing model. Therefore, the workflow scheduling in cloud needs to be reconsidered. When scheduling workflows in clouds, the monetary cost and the makespan of the workflow executions are concerned with both the cloud service providers (CSPs) and the customers. In this paper, we study a series of cost-and-time-aware workflow scheduling algorithms in cloud environments, which aims to provide researchers with a choice of appropriate cloud workflow scheduling approaches in various scenarios. We conducted a broad review of different cloud workflow scheduling algorithms and categorized them based on their optimization objectives and constraints. Also, we discuss the possible future research direction of the clouds workflow scheduling.
