Abstract:This study analyzes a novel carbon capture and utilization pathway that has been proposed for the decarbonization of the cement sector and compares its performance in terms of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to business as usual (BAU) and a carbon capture and storage (CCS) alternative. In the proposed integrated carbon capture and utilization (I-CCU) solution, methanol is produced with hydrogen from an electrolysis plant and with CO2 captured at an oxyfuel cement plant; the oxygen delivered to the oxyfuel cement plant comes from the same electrolysis plant that provides hydrogen, which eliminates the need for an air separation unit (ASU). Due to the high energy demand for electrolysis, the carbon footprint of the solution depends on the carbon intensity of the power grid; any advantage from avoiding an ASU is overshadowed by the energy requirements of I-CCU. Consequently, BAU outperforms I-CCU in geographical regions with specific electricity emissions larger than 0.2 kgCO2 /kW h, which corresponds to most of Europe. Furthermore, CCS is practically always a better alternative to I-CCU; only when there is renewable electricity available in abundance, I-CCU is better. Finally, it should be highlighted that using additional low-carbon electricity sources to drive I-CCU is not the most efficient use in terms of emission reductions per unit of low-carbon electricity. While the pursuit of (energy) integration and circularity should always be considered, our work emphasizes the necessity of conducting a comparative analysis, such as that presented here, to guarantee the achievement of the desired objectives.

Abstract:Abstract To curtail the global warming increase to less than 2°C by 2050, the IPCC highlights Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) as a vital approach. TotalEnergies, following its ambition to become a responsible energy major, invests 10% of its R&D budget in CCUS to reduce the global process cost and help decarbonize our activities. TotalEnergies is both working to decarbonize its own assets and developing a transport and storage infrastructure in Europe, with notably Northern Lights an example of note. It is equally of interest how this transport/storage infrastructure can be of use for other sectors and as such how various full CCUS chains may emerge. This explains the interest to develop techno-economic tools to evaluate CO2 capture processes applied to a wide range of industries. CO2 that is an integral part of the manufacturing process, is particularly difficult to abate in any future scenario, and one particular industry, which is facing such a challenge is the cement sector. CCUS has been identified as a potential solution to help with this issue. The present paper outlines the outcomes of a techno-economic study evaluating CO2 capture technologies based on cement factory retrofitting. A literature review aimed at identifying the main characteristics of a typical European cement plant (capacity, process mode, pollutant composition in the flue gas...) was carried out. In this paper, a base case scenario of 90% absorption-based CO2 capture with monoethanolamine (MEA) is compared with four alternative CO2 capture approaches: –An absorption technology based on non-amine solvent.–An adsorption technology based on a Concentration Swing Adsorption process.–An oxyfuel technology derived from the R&D works performed during the CEMCAP project (European CO2 capture project).–A Calcium Looping technology with tail-end process configuration. For each of these approaches, the whole carbon capture chain has been considered: this includes flue gas pretreatment, CO2 conditioning (including compression), steam generation, and utilities. Using process simulations, engineering studies have been carried out and have provided Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as Capital Costs, Operation Costs and Global Warming Potential (primary energy consumption per ton of CO2 avoided). It enabled mapping the technologies with regards to the cost and volume of CO2 avoided, as well as providing for each of the technologies the break-even point for an eventual CO2 tax. Based on these KPIs, several facts have been highlighted: –The need to consider the whole process (including utilities, compression...) and not only the capture unit.–The development of new materials for adsorption and contactor design is already driving down costs.–The availability of waste heat can be a game-changer to implement a CO2 capture technology.–Technology comparisons are location and site-specific and cannot be taken as a basis for concept selection. TotalEnergies approach to CCUS is collaborative. With these full-scale techno-economical assessments, generated via quotations from industrial equipment providers and using Engineering, Procurement and Construction standards, this not only gives a basis for comparison, but also assists our discussions with partners to identify key technological development pathways.
[Assessment of Emission Reduction Potential of CO2 Capture, Geological Utilization, and Storage in Cement Industry of China]

Abstract:The cement industry faces great pressure from the targets of carbon peak and carbon neutrality. CO2capture, geological utilization, and storage(CCUS) technology is crucial for CO2 mitigation in large-scale fossil-based industries. An integrated techno-economic assessment model of CCUS was improved here to assess the potential of CCUS retrofits in the cement industry in China, and the cost curve or supply curve of CCUS in the cement industry was obtained. The model set up ten scenarios from four aspects:source-sink matching distance, capture rate, CCUS technology, and technical level. The cement enterprise screening, site screening, techno-economic evaluation, and source-sink matching of CCUS were completed to answer some key problems in realizing low-carbon development via CCUS, such as enterprise inventory, storage site, emission reduction scale, and cost range. Under the scenario of 250 km matching distance, 85% net capture rate, CO2-enhanced water recovery technology, and current technical level, 44% of cement enterprises reduced carbon emission via CCUS, the cumulative capacity reached 625 million tons per year, and the levelized cost was 290-1838 yuan·t-1. The projects with a levelized cost of fewer than 600 yuan·t-1 accounted for 77% and could reduce CO2 emission by 564 million tons annually. The projects whose levelized cost was less than 400 yuan·t-1 could reduce CO2 by 199 million tons per year. When the coupling of CO2-enhanced oil recovery and CO2-enhanced water recovery technology was considered, the levelized cost was 27% lower. When the cement capacity was less than 530 million tons per year, the additional cost of cement production was 95-300 yuan·t-1. Under technological progress to 2030, the levelized cost will be reduced by 9%-15%. The regions with early demonstration advantages of full-chain CO2-enhanced water recovery technology were Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Henan, and Hebei. Additionally, the areas suitable for cement CCUS cluster included Ordos Basin, Junggar Basin, Bohai Bay Basin, and Songliao Basin. It is technically feasible for the cement industry to deploy full-chain CCUS projects, and low-cost projects have an early demonstration opportunity. These results can provide a quantitative reference for the low-carbon development of the cement industry and the commercial deployment of CCUS in cement production.

Abstract:Utilizing exhaust gases from the steel mill generation to produce chemicals presents a promising avenue for carbon capture and utilization (CCU) concepts. Employing a model-based mathematical approach, specifically mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), enables the identification of optimal production concepts. To evaluate the long-term feasibility under uncertain future conditions, the construction of hypothetical scenarios to depict possible future states is necessary. This study introduces novel and tailored scenarios for a specific CCU concept aimed at producing methanol, ammonia, urea and/or acetic acid from steel mill exhaust gases by the year 2040 to enhance decision-making processes for identifying the optimal concept. These scenarios provide comprehensive insights into potential future conditions, spanning technical, economic and ecological domains. Unlike prior studies that focus on individual key factors, this approach involves analyzing the interactions of 24 identified key factors within the investigated CCU concept. The method yields five distinct scenarios: (1) Business as Usual (BAU), (2) CO2 Reduction and Renewable Energy Target (RE-Boom), (3) Technical Improvement and Market Booming (Market-Boom), (4) Energy and Market Crisis (Crisis) and (5) Hydrogen Booming (H2-Boom). These five scenarios can be directly integrated into MILP models, enhancing the significance of the optimization results for identifying the optimal CCU concept.

Abstract:The cement industry is a significant source of CO 2 emissions. The implementation of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technology is one measure aimed at limiting these emissions. This study analyses the mineral carbonation process using CO 2 and flue gas as the last stage of the CCUS process applied to cement kiln dust. Moreover, this study provides directions for utilising the products of the process. The results suggest that mineral sequestration using the cement kiln dust can reduce CO 2 emissions by 0.42 % at a plant at a cost of EUR 80 per European Union Allowance; this approach can save approximately 41,000 EUR/year. Mineral carbonation can be used as a form of recovery, because the waste products from cement plants can be used in the implementation of CCUS technology, rendering them economically viable.

Abstract:Decarbonizing the cement manufacturing sector presents an interesting and pressing challenge as it is one of the largest energy consumers in industry (i.e., 7%), emitting considerable amounts of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (i.e., 7%). This paper performs a technical and environmental assessment of decarbonisation of cement production through process modelling and simulation, thermal integration analysis, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Integration of three post-combustion capture methods for a conventional cement plant with an annual productivity of one million tons and a carbon capture rate of 90% is evaluated in comparison to the reference case without carbon capture and storage (CCS). Mass and energy balances derived from simulations are used for the assessment of three innovative capture systems: reactive gas-liquid absorption using Methyl-Di-Ethanol-Amine, reactive gas-solid adsorption using calcium looping (CaL) technology and membrane separation. For the LCA study, a "cradle-to-gate" approach is carried out using GaBi software, according to the ReCiPe impact assessment method. The general conclusion is that integrating the CCS methods into the cement production process leads to a decrease in global warming potential (GWP) in the range of 69.91%-76.74%. Of the CCS technologies analysed, CaL technically outperforms the others as it requires 34% less coal and provides 1.6 times higher gross energy efficiency. From an environmental perspective, CaL integration ranks first, with the lowest scores in six of the nine impact categories and a GWP reduction of 76.74% compared to the baseline scenario without CCS.

Abstract:Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is a combination of technologies capable of achieving large-scale reductions in carbon dioxide emissions across a variety of industries. Its application to date has however been mostly limited to the power sector, despite emissions from other industrial sectors accounting for around 30% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. This paper explores the challenges of and requirements for implementing CCUS in non-power industrial sectors in general, and in the steel sector in particular, to identify drivers for the technology’s commercialization. To do so we first conducted a comprehensive literature review of business models of existing large-scale CCUS projects. We then collected primary qualitative data through a survey questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with global CCUS experts from industry, academia, government, and consultancies. Our results reveal that the revenue model is the most critical element to building successful CCUS business models, around which the following elements are structured: funding sources, capital & ownership structure, and risk management/allocation. One promising mechanism to subsidize the additional costs associated with the introduction of CCUS to industry is the creation of a ‘low-carbon product market’, while the creation of clear risk-allocation systems along the full CCUS chain is particularly highlighted. The application of CCUS as an enabling emission reduction technology is further shown to be a factor of consumer and shareholder pressures, pressing environmental standards, ethical resourcing, resource efficiency, and first-mover advantages in an emerging market. This paper addresses the knowledge gap which exists in identifying viable CCUS business models in the industrial sector which, with the exception of a few industry reports, remains poorly explored in the academic literature.

Abstract:Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology plays a crucial role in the transition towards lowcarbon emissions in the cement industry. However, it also results in numerous energy and water consumption. To formulate proper CCUS deployment strategies, it is essential to optimize spatial CCUS layouts and examine the carbon-energy-water nexus of the technology. This study combines China's cement emission inventory, representing carbon sources, with carbon storage sites data, and develops a source-sink matching model to determine optimal CCUS deployment schemes under different mitigation target scenarios. In addition, the spatial distribution of energy and water consumption impacts, as well as the carbon-energy-water nexus, are evaluated. Results indicate that the deployment of CCUS in 229, 445, and 627 cement plants is necessary to mitigate 20%, 40%, and 60% of carbon emissions in China's cement industry, respectively. The estimated economic costs of these schemes are 79.4, 167.9, and 269.5 billion CNY, posing a significant financial challenge for the industry. Carbon capture technologies greatly influence the carbon-energy-water nexus of the CCUS deployment schemes, with net energy and water consumption ranging from 271.5 to 2410.9 PJ and - 28.5 to 872.4 million m3. Totally, 13-15 provinces achieve synergic carbon mitigation and water extraction effects by using the technologies with low water intensity. Nevertheless, trade-offs between carbon and energy exist regardless the technology. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights for planning CCUS deployment schemes by revealing the multi-dimensional impacts on economic costs, energy consumption, and water consumption, which supports the decarbonization of China's cement industry.

Abstract:This paper, which is a contribution to the UNEP series on Eco-Efficient Cements, examines the role of material-based solutions to reducing CO2 emissions from cement production considering factors that could influence implementation. Global urbanization has led to an increase in demand for cement and cement-based materials. With its growth in consumption, the associated CO2 emissions from its production are raising concern. However, the role of mitigation strategies in a global context that account for regional material availability and degree of market adoption have yet to be considered. This work shows that the 2°C scenario targets for 2050 can be met through increased use of calcined clay and engineered filler with dispersants. The introduction of new Portland clinker-based cement alternatives, use of alkali-activated materials, and improvement of efficiency of cement use could further contribute to reduction goals. There are currently-available technologies for reduction that could be rapidly implemented.

Abstract:The concept of CCS cluster brings together multiple CO2 industrial emitters using shared capture and/or transportation infrastructure and offers several advantages for network partners compared with point-to-point individual projects. It reduces costs for CCS, and enables CO2 capture from small volume industrial facilities. The proposed concept connects a cluster of industrial sites with significant heat demands with a cement plant through the implementation of a Ca-looping CCS system. This system treats the flue gas from all the industrial emitters in independent boiler/carbonators while uses the kiln furnace as calciner for the cement and the capture plant. The carbonator reactors located in each one of the industry sites are fed by CaO from the cement plant to capture the CO2 content of their own flue gas. After carbonation reaction, the exhaust sorbent is transported back to the cement plant for regeneration in the kiln furnace. The aim of this work is to analyse the techno-economic feasibility of the proposed Ca-looping CCS cluster. The economic assessment, assuming 20 €/ton CaO and carbon market 30 €/ton CO2 points out the feasibility of this kind of centralized carbon capture system to handle the carbon from small emitters. Results show that the operating costs of small companies that use coal or natural gas reduce from 21.3 M€ to 18.8 M€ or from 25.5 to 23.0 M€. For the cement industry this income lessens its operating costs 1.9 M€ lower than a reference situation where CCS is only implemented in cement plant.

Abstract:The main conclusions of an analysis of low-CO2, eco-efficient cement-based materials, carried out by a multi-stakeholder working group initiated by the United Nations Environment Program Sustainable Building and Climate Initiative (UNEP-SBCI) are presented, based on the white papers published in this special issue. We believe that Portland-based cement approaches will dominate in the near future due to economies of scale, levels of process optimisation, availability of raw materials and market confidence. Two product-based approaches can deliver substantial additional reductions in their global CO2 emissions, reducing the need for costly investment in carbon capture and storage (CCS) over the next 20–30 years: 1. Increased use of low-CO2 supplements (SCMs) as partial replacements for Portland cement clinker. 2. More efficient use of Portland cement clinker in mortars and concretes. However, other emerging technologies could also play an important role in emissions mitigation in the longer term, and thus merit further investigation.

Abstract:This contribution discusses the carbon capture and utilization (CCU) approach based on CO2 mineralization of cement paste from recycled concrete as new approach to capture CO2 and significantly contribute to the reduction in CO2 emissions associated with cement production. The current literature suggests that all CO2 released from the decomposition of limestone during clinker production can be sequestered by carbonation of the end-of-life cement paste. This carbonation can be achieved in a few hours at ambient temperature and pressure and with a relatively low CO2 concentration (< 10 %) in the gas. The carbonation of cement paste produces calcite and an amorphous alumina-silica gel, the latter being a pozzolanic material that can be utilized as a supplementary cementitious material. The pozzolanic reaction of the alumina-silica gel is very rapid as a result of its high specific surface and amorphous structure. Thus, composite cements containing carbonated cement paste are characterized by a rapid strength gain. The successful implementation of this CCU approach relies also on improved concrete recycling techniques and methods currently under development to separate out the cement paste fines and such. Full concrete recycling will further improve the circular utilization of cement and concrete by using recycled aggregates instead of natural deposits of aggregates. Although the feasibility of the process has already been demonstrated at the industrial scale, there are still several open questions related to optimum carbonation conditions and the performance of carbonated material in novel composite cements.

Abstract:Approximately 10 % of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions arise from the cement and concrete industry driven by urban expansion and a constant need for infrastructure renewal. Reusing waste CO2 to make new construction materials produces circular carbon flows and constitutes a key step toward a carbon-negative economy. To establish a holistic view of the field, this paper examines upscaled technologies with industrial deployments for utilizing CO2 in manufacturing cement-based materials and analyzes their interplay for attaining net-zero emissions (NZE) in the concrete sector. By scrutinizing the status quo, it suggests that NZE agendas should be diversified catering to the wide-ranging built products. Small-sized precast elements and lightweight components lead the way in carbon-neutral manufacturing, while the market-dominating ready-mix concrete is by far difficult to decarbonize and relies on the incorporation of pre‑carbonated ingredients, preferably sourced from alkaline wastes, to leverage large-scale CO2 utilization. To expedite the race to NZE, it is necessary to combine the development of CO2 utilization and low-CO2 cement to create decarbonization strategies tailoring for individual products. In this regard, the paper reveals credible pathways and research needs to facilitate their implementation in sustainable construction.
Feasible supply of steel and cement within a carbon budget is likely to fall short of expected global demand

Abstract:Abstract The current decarbonization strategy for the steel and cement industries is inherently dependent on the build-out of infrastructure, including for CO 2 transport and storage, renewable electricity, and green hydrogen. However, the deployment of this infrastructure entails considerable uncertainty. Here we explore the global feasible supply of steel and cement within Paris-compliant carbon budgets, explicitly considering uncertainties in the deployment of infrastructure. Our scenario analysis reveals that despite substantial growth in recycling- and hydrogen-based production, the feasible steel supply will only meet 58–65% (interquartile range) of the expected baseline demand in 2050. Cement supply is even more uncertain due to limited mitigation options, meeting only 22–56% (interquartile range) of the expected baseline demand in 2050. These findings pose a two-fold challenge for decarbonizing the steel and cement industries: on the one hand, governments need to expand essential infrastructure rapidly; on the other hand, industries need to prepare for the risk of deployment failures, rather than solely waiting for large-scale infrastructure to emerge. Our feasible supply scenarios provide compelling evidence of the urgency of demand-side actions and establish benchmarks for the required level of resource efficiency.

Abstract:Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology plays a crucial role in the pursuit of carbon neutrality. To reduce the cost of carbon neutrality, it is necessary to optimally design the supply chain of CCUS, which leads to mega scale problems for vast countries such as China. In this paper, a novel three-module framework including source-sink matching, meshing, and pipeline transportation network allocating, which has the advantage of plant-level decision and trunk transportation while keeping the size of the model solvable, is proposed. In addition, a database including major CO2 emission sources in thermal power, cement, and iron-steel sectors as well as major CO2 storage sinks in China is set up. By comparison of scenarios with and without offshore storage, offshore storage is found to be superior in those southern coastal provinces. With a transportation distance not exceeding 250 km, around 4.2 Gt of CO2 can be captured and stored. Simultaneously, establishing sensible CCUS deployment objectives is crucial. As the planned deployment capacity rises from 601.8 to 1203.5 Mt/year, the unit net supply chain cost will elevate from 28.5 $/tonCO2 to 36.0 $/ton, marking a 26% increase. Moreover, the evolution of CCUS deployment toward achieving carbon neutrality between 2025 and 2050 is analyzed. Notably, early stage deployment is suitable for provinces in northern China, while other provinces are anticipated to engage in subsequent phases. The comparative study indicates that CCUS is more economically viable than introducing green power and green hydrogen in the thermal power, iron-steel, and cement sectors for emission reduction.

Abstract:CO 2 capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology is a rare option for the large-scale use of fossil fuels in a low-carbon way, which will definitely play a part in the journey towards carbon neutrality. Within the CCUS nexus, CCU is especially interesting because these processes will establish a new "atmosphere-to-atmosphere" carbon cycle and thus indirectly offer huge potential in carbon reduction. This study focuses on the new positioning of CCUS in the carbon neutrality scenario and aims to identify potential cutting-edge/disruptive CCU technologies that may find important application opportunities during the decarbonization of the energy and industrial system. To this end, direct air capture (DAC), flexible metal-framework materials (MOFs) for CO 2 capture, integrated CO 2 capture and conversion (ICCC), and electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction (ECR) were selected, and their general introduction, the importance to carbon neutrality, and most up-to-date research progress are summarized.

Net-zero transition of the global chemical industry with CO2-feedstock by 2050: feasible yet challenging

Abstract:Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) have been projected by the power and industrial sectors to play a vital role towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, we aim to explore the feasibility of a global chemical industry that fully relies on CO 2 as its carbon source in 2050. We project the global annual CO 2 demand as chemical feedstock to be 2.2–3.1 Gigatonnes (Gt), well within the possible range of supply (5.2–13.9 Gt) from the power, cement, steel, and kraft pulp sectors. Hence, feedstock availability is not a constraint factor for the transition towards a fully CO 2 -based chemical industry on the global basis, with the exception of few regions that could face local supply shortages, such as the Middle East. We further conduct life cycle assessment to examine the environmental benefits on climate change and the trade-offs of particulate matter-related health impacts induced by carbon capture. We conclude that CO 2 captured from solid biomass-fired power plants and kraft pulp mills in Europe would have the least environmental and health impacts, and that India and China should prioritize low-impact regional electricity supply before a large-scale deployment of CCUS. Finally, two bottom-up case studies of China and the Middle East illustrate how the total regional environmental and health impacts from carbon capture can be minimized by optimizing its supply sources and transport, requiring sector cooperation and early planning of infrastructure. Overall, capture and utilization of unabatable industrial waste CO 2 as chemical feedstock can be a feasible way for the net-zero transition of the industry, while concerted efforts are yet needed to build up the carbon-capture-and-utilization value chain around the world.

Abstract:The use of calcium carbide sludge (CCS) as a substitute for limestone is an effective method for reducing CO 2 emissions in the cement industry. In this study, a life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to assess the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction potential of CCS cement clinker compared to that of Portland cement clinker . The results showed that the global warming potential (GWP) of CCS cement clinker was approximately 31% lower than that of Portland cement clinker. However, this may have other environmental impacts owing to the extra energy used for CCS pretreatment. The environmental impacts of three typical CCS cement clinker production scenarios were compared, and the results demonstrated that Scenario 2 (CCS pretreated by mechanical dehydration and dried using a coal-drying machine) was the best among these three scenarios from the perspective of environmental performance. An optimization scheme for CCS pre-drying system (using waste heat from clinker kiln for drying CCS) in Scenario 2 was also proposed and had the potential to decrease the environmental impact. Finally, sensitivity analysis revealed that other factors (e.g., CCS transport distance, CCS content) may affect the GHG emissions and other environmental impacts of CCS cement clinker, which should be considered in practical applications. This case study demonstrates that non-carbonate alternative materials should be actively explored for their application in the cement industry, and a series of emission-reduction technologies should be developed for GHG generated from industrial process.

Application of CCUS to the WtE sector

Abstract:Waste management is a very scattered and complex system made up by different plants and facilities that treat/recover/valorize/dispose different types of waste, e.g. Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) or Special Waste, based on the policies adopted in each country and the available technologies. While the management of MSW is the result of public planning, the management of special waste is typically dispersed and depends, for a large extent, on the initiatives of waste producers and private waste management companies. As a result, plants for MSW recovery are relatively large plants equipped with energy recovery facilities, whereas special waste is often incinerated in medium-small plants that feature energy recovery only in very limited cases. Therefore, an initial investigation on the potential integration of Waste to Energy (WtE) facilities with Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) should be focused on MSW and plants devoted to its treatment. Only in existing European WtE plants, there is a potential capture of 60-70 millions of tonnes of CO2 per year, and current large- scale projects prove the technical viability of carbon capture technologies in WtE environments. The paper summarizes the outcome of a study addressing all the opportunities and challenges related to the application of CCUS to the WtE sector. This study is executed by Wood, with the support of LEAP, and commissioned by IEAGHG. The main objective of the work is to carry out an initial overview of this CCS/CCU opportunity before proceeding to more detailed evaluations. The study is based on both literature information available in the public domain and results of surveys with WtE plants owners. Before evaluating a possible Carbon Capture application to the WtE sector, the study reviews the current status and diffusion of the WtE business and the plants distribution worldwide, focusing on ten representative countries: South Africa, USA, India, Japan, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, UK, Norway, Australia. The selection considers several parameters: the urbanization level, the branching of the electricity/heat network, the presence of large scale WtE plants, the potential for CCS/CCU applied to WtE plants and the availability of potential destinations for the captured CO2. The main challenges in this kind of plants, focusing particularly on reliability, are also identified. The link between WtE and CO2 emissions is then investigated: firstly, the trends and the tools adopted by WtE plants in reducing CO2 emissions are analyzed; secondly, a lifecycle assessment approach is described and applied to the local contexts of the ten selected countries. The objective is to estimate the CO2 savings achievable through energy/materials recovery in a WtE plant, potentially leading to negative lifecycle emissions. The study then focuses on the possible integration of Carbon Capture within WtE facilities, collecting the information relevant to ongoing projects/initiatives aiming at this integration and identifying its potential challenges and opportunities in the design and the operation of the plants, based on the available literature. The most interesting aspects identified by this analysis are the energy integration and how the introduction of CO2 capture alters the energy balance of the WtE plant. There are also risks (related for example to financing, public acceptance, need for technology development) and opportunities (e.g. negative CO2 emissions, effective energy integration) that may arise from a WtE-CCUS integration. Considering that the presence of a regulatory framework on WtE and CCS can be an important driver for this kind of applications, a literature research is also carried out to provide an overview of the regulations applicable to the WtE and CCS sectors in the ten selected countries. Based on the various aspects analyzed throughout the course of the study, a tool is developed to estimate the potential of the CCUS/WtE integration, focusing on the local context of the ten selected counties. This presentation will include the methodology developed in this study, which aims to be a guide for future CCS projects in WtE plants.
