Abstract:Starting from the well-known relationship $|{\mathrm{e}}^z| = {\mathrm{e}}^{{\mathrm Re}(z)}$, we consider the question whether $|E_{\alpha,\beta}(z)|$ and $E_{\alpha,\beta}({\mathrm Re}(z))$ are comparable, as functions of the complex variable $z$, where $E_{\alpha,\beta}$ denotes the two-parameter Mittag-Leffler function, a generalization of the exponential function. For some ranges of the parameters $\alpha$ and $\beta$ we prove inequalities between $|E_{\alpha,\beta}(z)|$ and $E_{\alpha,\beta}({\mathrm Re}(z))$ holding globally for all $z\in \mathbb{C}$. In some other ranges of $\alpha$ and $\beta$ the same inequalities are proved to hold asymptotically, i.e. for sufficiently small or large $z$. There are moreover some values of $\alpha$ and $\beta$ for which the situation is less clear, and some conjectures, motivated by numerical observations, are proposed.

Abstract:Hyperbolic complete monotonicity property ($\mathrm{HCM}$) is a way to check if a distribution is a generalized gamma ($\mathrm{GGC}$), hence is infinitely divisible. In this work, we illustrate to which extent the Mittag-Leffler functions $E_\alpha, \;\alpha \in (0,2]$, enjoy the $\mathrm{HCM}$ property, and then intervene deeply in the probabilistic context. We prove that, for suitable $\alpha$ and complex numbers $z$, the real and imaginary part of the functions $x\mapsto E_\alpha \big(z x\big)$, are tightly linked to the stable distributions and to the generalized Cauchy kernel.

Abstract:The formal term-by-term differentiation with respect to parameters is demonstrated to be legitimate for the Mittag-Leffler type functions. The justification of differentiation formulas is made by using the concept of the uniform convergence. This approach is applied to the Mittag-Leffler function depending on two parameters and, additionally, for the $3$-parametric Mittag-Leffler functions (namely, for the Prabhakar function and the Le Roy type functions), as well as for the $4$-parametric Mittag-Leffler function (and, in particular, for the Wright function). The differentiation with respect to the involved parameters is discussed also in case those special functions which are represented via the Mellin-Barnes integrals.

Abstract:Abstract The multinomial Mittag-Leffler function plays a crucial role in the study of multi-term time-fractional evolution equations. In this work we establish basic properties of the Prabhakar type generalization of this function with the main emphasis on complete monotonicity. As particular examples, the relaxation functions for equations with multiple time-derivatives in the so-called “natural” and “modified” forms are studied in detail and useful estimates are derived. The obtained results extend known properties of the classical Mittag-Leffler function. The main tools used in this work are Laplace transform and Bernstein functions’ technique.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we consider a family of 3m-indices generalizations of the classical Mittag-Leffler function, called multi-index (3m-parametric) Mittag-Leffler functions. We survey the basic properties of these entire functions, find their order and type, and new representations by means of Mellin-Barnes type contour integrals, Wright pΨq-functions and Fox H-functions, asymptotic estimates. Formulas for integer and fractional order integration and differentiations are found, and these are extended also for the operators of the generalized fractional calculus (multiple Erdélyi-Kober operators). Some interesting particular cases of the multi-index Mittag-Leffler functions are discussed. The convergence of series of such type functions in the complex plane is considered, and analogues of the Cauchy-Hadamard, Abel, Tauber and Littlewood theorems are provided.

Abstract:In the paper, by convolution theorem of the Laplace transforms, a monotonicity rule for the ratio of two Laplace transforms, Bernstein's theorem for completely monotonic functions, and other analytic techniques, the authors verify decreasing property of a ratio between three derivatives of a function involving trigamma function and find necessary and sufficient conditions for a function defined by three derivatives of a function involving trigamma function to be completely monotonic. These results confirm previous guesses posed by Qi and generalize corresponding known conclusions.

Abstract:In this paper, we define and study a generalized multiparameter function of Mittag-Leffler type. Some special cases and basic properties including its Mellin–Barnes-type integral representation, recurrence relation, and expansion are given. The Laplace transform and the first Sonine integral of the generalized function are evaluated. Differential and integral equations with the Erdelyi–Kober operator are established. The Cauchy problem for the multiparameter differential equation is formulated and its solution is obtained.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, we propose three types of absolute continuity for monotone measures and present some of their basic properties. By means of these three types of absolute continuity, we establish generalized Egoroff's theorem, generalized Riesz's theorem and generalized Lebesgue's theorem in the framework involving the ordered pair of monotone measures. The Egoroff theorem, the Riesz theorem and the Lebesgue theorem in the traditional sense concerning a unique monotone measure are extended to the general case. These three generalized convergence theorems include as special cases several previous versions of Egoroff-like theorem, Riesz-like theorem and Lebesgue-like theorem for monotone measures, respectively.</p>

Abstract:Abstract In this paper an extended generalized Mittag-Leffler function $\begin{array}{} \displaystyle E_{\rho,\sigma,\tau}^{\delta,r,q,c}(z;p) \end{array}$ and the corresponding fractional integral operator $\begin{array}{} \displaystyle \varepsilon_{a^{+},\rho,\sigma,\tau}^{w,\delta,q,r,c}f \end{array}$ are defined and used to obtain generalizations of Opial-type inequalities due to Mitrinović and Pečarić. Also, some interesting properties of this function and its integral operator are discussed. Several known results are deduced.

Abstract:Derivatives with respect to the parameters of the integral Mittag-Leffler function and the integral Wright function, recently introduced by us, are calculated. These derivatives can be expressed in the form of infinite sums of quotients of the digamma and gamma functions. In some particular cases, these infinite sums are calculated in closed-form with the help of MATHEMATICA. However, parameter differentiation reduction formulas are explicitly derived in order to check some of the results given by MATHEMATICA, as well as to provide many other new results. In addition, we present these infinite sums graphically for particular values of the parameters. Finally, new results for parameter derivatives of the Mittag-Leffler and Wright functions are reported in the Appendices.

Abstract:Abstract Motivated mainly by certain interesting recent extensions of the generalized hypergeometric function [H. M. Srivastava, A. Çetinkaya and I. Onur Kıymaz, A certain generalized Pochhammer symbol and its applications to hypergeometric functions, Appl. Math. Comput. 226 2014, 484–491] by means of the generalized Pochhammer symbol, we introduce here a new extension of the generalized Mittag-Leffler function. We then systematically investigate several properties of the extended Mittag-Leffler function including some basic properties, Mellin, Euler-Beta, Laplace and Whittaker transforms. Furthermore, certain properties of the Riemann–Liouville fractional integrals and derivatives associated with the extended Mittag-Leffler function are also investigated. Some interesting special cases of our main results are pointed out.

Abstract:Riemann sums, a classical method for approximating the definite integral of a function, have been extensively studied in the past. However, their monotonic properties, while still of great importance, particularly in approximation theory and interpolation theory, remain somewhat obscure. This paper is dedicated to proving general theorems about the monotonicity of left and right Riemann sums, a problem first raised by Fejér in 1950. We provide a much-needed review of the literature on the problem and offer several new sufficient and necessary conditions for the monotonicity of Riemann sums. Additionally, we present a new insightful proof of a fundamental theorem related to these sums using tools from the theory of majorization. The author also delves deeper into a question posed by Borwein, almost resolving it completely.

Abstract:We provide quantitative and abstract strong convergence results for sequences from a compact metric space satisfying a certain form of generalized Fejér monotonicity where (1) the metric can be replaced by a much more general type of function measuring distances (including, in particular, certain Bregman distances), (2) full Fejér monotonicity is relaxed to a partial variant and (3) the distance functions are allowed to vary along the iteration. For such sequences, the paper provides explicit and effective rates of metastability and even rates of convergence, the latter under a regularity assumption that generalizes the notion of metric regularity introduced by Kohlenbach, López-Acedo and Nicolae, itself an abstract generalization of many regularity notions from the literature. In the second part of the paper, we apply the abstract quantitative results established in the first part to two algorithms: one algorithm for approximating zeros of maximally monotone and maximally ρ -comonotone operators in Hilbert spaces (in the sense of Combettes and Pennanen as well as Bauschke, Moursi and Wang) that incorporates inertia terms every other term and another algorithm for approximating zeros of monotone operators in Banach spaces (in the sense of Browder) that is only Fejér monotone w.r.t. a certain Bregman distance.

Abstract:Abstract The Mittag–Leffler function (MLF) plays an important role in many applications of fractional calculus, establishing a connection between exponential and power law behaviors that characterize integer and fractional order phenomena, respectively. Nevertheless, the numerical computation of the MLF poses problems both of accuracy and convergence. In this paper, we study the calculation of the 2-parameter MLF by using polynomial computation and integral formulas. For the particular cases having Laplace transform (LT) the method relies on the inversion of the LT using the fast Fourier transform. Experiments with two other available methods compare also the computational time and accuracy. The 3-parameter MLF and its calculation are also considered.

Abstract:<p>Mittag‐Leffler functions of one variable play a vital role in several areas of study. Their connections with fractional calculus enable many physical processes, such as diffusion and viscoelasticity, to be efficiently modelled. Here, we consider a Mittag‐Leffler function of two variables and the associated double integral operator, with the goal of establishing once again connections with fractional calculus. By working from the fractional‐calculus viewpoint, it is possible to obtain many new results concerning the double integral operator, including a series formula and a bivariate chain rule. We also discover a left inverse operator, which completes this model of fractional calculus. As applications, we solve some initial value problems and use a modified Stancu‐Bernstein model to approximate the image of a Hölder‐continuous function under the action of our double integral operator.</p>

Exponential sum approximations of finite completely monotonic functions

Abstract:Bernstein's theorem (also called Hausdorff--Bernstein--Widder theorem) enables the integral representation of a completely monotonic function. We introduce a finite completely monotonic function, which is a completely monotonic function with a finite positive integral interval of the integral representation. We consider the exponential sum approximation of a finite completely monotonic function based on the Gaussian quadrature with a variable transformation. If the variable transformation is analytic on an open Bernstein ellipse, the maximum absolute error decreases at least geometrically with respect to the number of exponential functions. The maximization of the decreasing rate of the error bound can be achieved by using a variable transformation represented by Jacobi's delta amplitude function (also called dn function). The error curve is expanded by introducing basis functions, which are eigenfunctions of a fourth order differential operator, satisfy orthogonality conditions, and have the interlacing property of zeros by Kellogg's theorem.

Rational Approximations for Oscillatory Two-Parameter Mittag-Leffler Function

Abstract:The two-parameter Mittag-Leffler function $E_{\alpha, \beta}$ is of fundamental importance in fractional calculus. It appears frequently in the solutions of fractional differential and integral equations. Nonetheless, this vital function is often expensive to compute. Several attempts have been made to construct cost-effective and accurate approximations. These attempts focus mainly on the completely monotone Mittag-Leffler functions. However, when $\alpha > 1$ the monotonicity property is largely lost and as such roots and oscillations are exhibited. Consequently, existing approximants constructed mainly for $\alpha \in (0,1)$ often fail to capture this oscillatory behavior. In this paper, we construct computationally efficient and accurate rational approximants for $E_{\alpha, \beta}(-t)$, $t \ge 0$, with $\alpha \in (1,2)$. This construction is fundamentally based on the decomposition of Mittag-Leffler function with real roots into one without and a polynomial. Following which new approximants are constructed by combining the global Padé approximation with a polynomial of appropriate degree. The rational approximants are extended to approximation of matrix Mittag-Leffler and different approaches to achieve efficient implementation for matrix arguments are discussed. Numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the significant accuracy improvement achieved by the proposed approximants.
