Abstract:Nanotechnology-enabled water treatment is a promising solution to the challenges in the current water treatment processes, particularly to the crisis of persistent and trace emerging contaminants. Taking the integrated process coupling membrane filtration with ozonation that has been developed and widely applied in field as examples, we analyze the scientific rationale of catalytic ceramic membranes and nano-effects in membrane pores, which are considered as nano-reactors. The confinement effects are analyzed from four aspects, including the high specific surface area in membrane nano-pores, enrichment of reactants and enhancement of reaction kinetics in nano-pores, organized arrangement of water molecules in nano-reactors and the role of electric double layer during reactions. For each aspect, we build the correlation between the confinement effects and the phenomena in membrane nano-pores. Moreover, we present opportunities for the future research on nanotechnology-enabled water treatment.

Abstract:Reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) are widely used in many water treatment processes, such as seawater and brackish water desalination. Membranes with improved separation performance and antifouling properties can be prepared by incorporating nanoparticles into membrane matrix. A number of nanomaterials can serve as potential water transport channels and modify the structure and surface properties of the membrane thin film layers. Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) can benefit from the high performance of both the organic matrix and inorganic fillers, which are believed to be the next generation of novel membrane materials. Recent advances of the nanoparticle-filled RU, NF and forward osmosis (FO) MMMs are reviewed in this paper. The effects of nanomaterials with various properties on membrane structure and separation performance are discussed, including zeolites, nanotubes, mesoporous materials, pure metal, metallic oxides, graphene oxide and aquaporin. The dispersibility of nanofillers in MMMs and their compatibility with polymer matrix can be improved by surface modification. Different methods of nanoparticle addition and membrane preparation are also illustrated in detail. Based on the analysis of the recent works, the membrane formation and separation mechanisms are explored and the main problems of membrane synthesis and application are summarized. Finally, the future development of RO, NF and FO MMMs for water treatment process is suggested.
Artificial Water Channels Engineered Thin-Film Nanocomposite Membranes for High-Efficient Application in Water Treatment

Abstract:Inspired by biological aquaporins, artificial water channels (AWCs) can achieve high-performance for thin-film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. In our work, two types of liposomes (C18lyso and D5A liposomes) with superior permeability serving as AWCs were designed by regulating the molecular structures of lipids, in which D5A liposomes have a better ability to water transport water molecules. Herein, liposome-based RO membranes (TFN-C18lyso and TFN-D5A) were fabricated via in situ interfacial polymerizations (IP). The resulting TFN-C18lyso shows an increase in water permeability of - 51.4 % (up to 3.83 L m-2 h-1 bar- 1) while TFN-D5A displays an increase in water permeability of - 67.2 % (up to 4.23 L m-2 h-1 bar- 1), and both membranes keep high rejection of - 98.6 %. Moreover, both TFN-C18lyso and TFN-D5A present good separation stability, chemical resistance, and good desalination. Our work provides a valid and versatile foundation for developing advanced biomimetic membranes in water treatment.

Abstract:Ultrafiltration polymer membranes are facing great challenges in broader applications, for their inherent limitations especially poor hydrophilicity, anti-fouling and anti-compaction properties. In order to improve and enhance the integrated properties of the membrane, YxFeyZr1-x-yO2 coated TiO2 solid superacid (SYFZr-Tis) functional nanomaterial was synthesized via hydrolysis, calcination and sulfation, and phosphorylated ZrxSi1-xO2/Al2O3 (PZSA) was prepared through co-hydrolysis, silanization and phosphorylation, followed by coating of Al2O3. The functional nanomaterials show positive effects on membrane performances. The SYFZr-Tis nanoparticles can form micro reaction locations (MRLs) in the membrane when doping into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to prepare SYFZr-Tis/PVDF hybrid membranes, which show a tensile strength of 3.57 MPa, water contact angle of 29.1° and porosity of 73.58%. Moreover, the hybrid membrane shows a favorable oil retention ratio of 90.63% and a stable permeate flux of 345 L m−2 h−1 under operating pressure of 0.15 MPa (59.93% and 183 L m−2 h−1 for PVDF pristine membrane). In addition, the PZSA functional nanomaterials were employed as a functional layer to form PZSA self-assembled membrane on porous supports. Research shows that the self-assembled membrane performs oil and COD retention ratios of 86.84% and 85.23% respectively and a water yield of 526.32 L m−2 h−1 when treating oily wastewater (under operating pressure of 0.15 MPa). Furthermore, compared with the hybrid membrane, the PZSA self-assembled membrane performs recyclable character, which lowers membrane costs. Therefore, functional nanomaterials effectively enhance the development of membrane technology, and they are expected to achieve potential applications in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Membrane separation has enjoyed tremendous advances in relevant material and engineering sciences, making it the fastest growing technology in water treatment. Although membranes as a broad-spectrum physical barrier have great advantages over conventional treatment processes in a myriad of applications, the need for higher selectivity and specificity in membrane separation is rising as we move to target contaminants at trace concentrations and to recover valuable chemicals from wastewater with low energy consumption. In this review, we discuss the drivers, fundamental science, and potential enabling materials for high selectivity membranes, as well as their applications in different water treatment processes. Membrane materials and processes that show promise to achieve high selectivity for water, ions, and small molecules—as well as the mechanisms involved—are highlighted. We further identify practical needs, knowledge gaps, and technological barriers in both material development and process design for high selectivity membrane processes. Finally, we discuss research priorities in the context of existing and future water supply paradigms.

The study emphasizes the utilization of state-of-the-art nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, titanium dioxide, and silver nanoparticles, as advanced substances that can adsorb and catalyze effectively. The article discusses the latest advancements in membrane technology, specifically focusing on improvements in processes like as reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, and microfiltration. An assessment is conducted to determine the efficacy of these nanotechnologies in eliminating diverse organic and inorganic contaminants that provide considerable difficulties for conventional water treatment procedures. Abstract:Abstract Carbon nanotube (CNT)‐based membranes combine the promising properties of CNTs with the advantages of membrane separation technologies, offering enhanced membrane performance in terms of permeability and selectivity. This review looks at the existing membrane architectures based on CNTs and their main advantages and disadvantages for water treatment applications. The different types of CNT‐based membranes that are reported in the literature are highlighted, as well as their corresponding fabrication methods. Available methodologies for tailoring the final membrane properties and behavior are thoroughly discussed, making special emphasis in chemical modification of the CNT surface. Finally, the most common applications of CNT‐based membranes in water treatment are reviewed, including seawater or brine desalination, oil–water separation, removal of heavy metals, and organic pollutants. The main limitations and perspectives of CNT‐based membranes are also briefly outlined.

Abstract:Membrane separation technologies are currently considered among the leading technologies for the treatment of polluted (waste)water in terms of treatment efficiency and ease of implementation. However, their wider applications, especially for real wastewater treatment, have been restricted by some bottlenecks, including rapid fouling, low stability, and high production costs. Recently, naturally derived materials including carbonaceous materials (e.g., biochar, activated carbon, carbon nanotubes, graphene and graphene oxide, and carbon quantum dots), clay (e.g., bentonite, kaolinite, and zeolite), and natural polymers (e.g., cellulose and chitin) have been employed for the modification of membrane structures to improve the properties required for efficient (waste)water treatment (e.g., water permeability, hydrophilicity, antifouling) and performance (e.g., rejection efficiency). The present review aims to summarize and discuss the literature available on the application of such naturally derived materials and their applicability for the large-scale fabrication of (waste)water filtration membranes. The existing challenges, scientific gaps, economic considerations, and regional development of membrane technologies have also been discussed, and recommendations have been provided for future studies to develop sustainable membrane structures, leading to a decrease in the overall treatment costs and enhancing the quality of treatment of effluents from industrial and nonindustrial sources.

Nanostructured Zwitterionic Membranes: Harnessing Temperature-Responsive Microgels for Tunable Water Filtration and Molecular Separation

Abstract:Microgels have emerged as promising building blocks for constructing porous membranes due to their soft, porous, responsive, and functional nature. In this work, we describe the fabrication of a versatile zwitterionic microgel-based membrane, comprising poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N-(Acryloyloxy)succinimide) (poly(NIPAm-co-NAS)) microgels covalently cross-linked with zwitterionic N,N,N-tris(2-aminoethyl)-3-sulfo-1-propanaminium salt (TRIPS) through a nucleophilic reaction between the succinimidyl ester group and the primary amine group. The poly(NIPAm-co-NAS) (PNN-X) microgels, with varying compositions of NIPAm and NAS monomers, were synthesized via a surfactant-assisted precipitation copolymerization. Subsequently, membranes were constructed by vacuum filtration of a dilute microgel suspension over a track-etched support followed by cross-linking with TRIPS. After thorough structural, morphological, and physicochemical characterizations, filtration and rejection properties were assessed. The nanostructured microgel membranes exhibited excellent water permeation with smart gating properties, owing to the high-water absorptivity and thermoresponsiveness of the microgel. The nanosized pores, formed due to the densely packed microgels and its own cross-linked structure, enabled strong rejection of low molecular weight dyes and macromolecules. Furthermore, the pore size tunability under external stimuli provided the capability for stepwise separation of different solutes with varying diameters by controlling their molecular transmission through the membrane. In summary, the prepared nanoporous zwitterionic microgel membrane exhibits strong antifouling properties with smart permeation and molecular separation, signifying its potential for water purification and various environmental separation and filtration.

Abstract:Water pollution is one of the greatest challenges around the world. Nanocomposite membranes are a promising modified version of traditional polymeric membranes for water treatment, with three main characteristics of enhanced permeation, improved rejection and reduced fouling. For novel nanocomposite membranes, there is a strong connection between the membrane fabrication method, the properties of fabricated membranes, and membrane performance. This article, first, reviews the different nanocomposite membrane fabrication and modification techniques for mixed matrix membranes and thin film membranes for both pressure driven and non-pressure driven membranes using different types of nanoparticles, carbon-based materials, and polymers. In addition, the advanced techniques for surface locating nanomaterials on different types of membranes are discussed in detail. The effects of nanoparticle physicochemical properties, type, size, and concentration on membranes intrinsic properties such as pore morphology, porosity, pore size, hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, membrane surface charge, and roughness are discussed and the performance of nanocomposite membranes in terms of flux permeation, contaminant rejection, and anti-fouling capability are compared. Secondly, the wide range of nanocomposite membrane applications, such as desalination and removal of various contaminants in water treatment processes, are discussed. Extensive background and examples are provided to help the reader understand the fundamental connections between the fabrication methods, membrane functionality, and membrane efficiency for different water treatment processes.

Abstract:Emerging nanofiltration (NF) separation technology for precision ionic/molecular separation at the nanoscale, which has the advantages of energy conservation, excellent separation and a small footprint, is promising for obtaining sustainable water resources via efficient water treatment and recycling. However, traditional NF membranes are restricted to applications at approximately room temperature because of the sharp deterioration in stability induced by the fragility of the nanopore structure at higher temperatures. Herein, we synthesized an unparalleled nanofiltration (NF) membrane with superior thermal stability up to 90 degree celsius and finely tailored nanopores with 0.3-1.1 nm, via de novo carbon skeleton-mediated polymerization (CSMP). Molecular thermodynamics simulations and experiments demonstrated that C-C skeletons can manipulate the stability of the intrinsic structure and intermolecular gap size, contributing to exceptionally thermostable and well-tailored nanopores. The synthesized membrane exhibited excellent long-term water permeance and high rejection of (sub)nanoscale contaminant molecules at high temperatures, which is far superior to the performance of currently available NF membranes.

Nonpolar cross-stacked super-aligned carbon nanotube membrane for efficient wastewater treatment

Abstract:Membrane separation technology has made great progress in various practical applications, but the unsatisfactory separation performance of prevailing membrane materials hampers its further sustainable growth. This study proposed a novel nonpolar super-aligned carbon nanotube (SACNT) membrane, which was prepared with a layer-by-layer cross-stacking method. Through controlling the number of stacked SACNT layers, three kinds of SACNT membranes (SACNT 200, SACNT 300, and SACNT_400) were prepared. Systematic characterizations and filtration tests were performed to investigate their physico-chemical properties, surface wetting behavior, and filtration performance. Compared with two commercial membranes (Com_0.22 and Com_0.45), all the SACNT membranes achieved smoother and more uniform structures. Due to the hexagonal graphene structure of CNTs, the surface chemistry of the SACNT membranes is simple and inert, thereby potentially eliminating the covalent-bonding-induced membrane fouling. Besides, the SACNT membranes exhibited a typical nonpolar wetting behavior, with high contact angles for polar liquids (water: ∼124.9°–126.5°; formamide: ∼80.0°–83.9°) but low contact angles for nonpolar diiodomethane (∼18.8°–20.9°). This unique nonpolar feature potentially leads to weak interactions with polar substances. Furthermore, compared with the commercial membranes, the SACNT membranes obtained a significantly higher selectivity while achieving a comparable or higher permeability (depending on the number of stacked layers). Moreover, the SACNT membranes exhibited superior separation performance in various application scenarios, including municipal wastewater treatment (>2.3 times higher cleaning efficiency), electro-assistant fouling inhibition (or even self-cleaning), and oil/water separation (>99.2 % of separation efficiency), suggesting promising application prospects in various fields.

Abstract:Journal of Industrial Textiles, Volume 52, Issue , July-December 2022. Over the last few decades, micropollutants have been found in the natural surface water, and their presence poses a series of risks to living organisms in the aquatic biotope. Nanofiber membranes have been shown as a new strategy for separating micron-size pollutants due to their tight pore size and high water permeability. Here, a high-efficient multi-layered nanofiber membrane with improved mechanical strength was prepared using the lamination technique. First, polyamide 6 (PA6), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers webs were selected. Then nanofibers were laminated on support under various temperatures. Prepared membranes were characterized using SEM, contact angle, pore size, and air permeability tests. The significance of lamination condition on membrane structure was investigated experimentally and statically. The membranes were examined for the treatment of synthetic micropollutants. According to the results, PAN and PA6 nanofiber membranes exhibited high water permeability (over 3000 L/(m2hbar)) under low pressure, whereas PVDF membranes showed zero permeability. Besides, the prepared nanofiber membranes could separate micropollutants from water with up to 99.91% separation efficiency. Prepared nanofiber membranes hold great promise for practical applications in environmental remediation.

Abstract:The discharge of acidic effluent streams containing multivalent metal ions and toxic dyes from industry poses an ineluctable threat to aquatic ecosystems and public health.Nanofiltration(NF,pore size ranging from 0.5 to 2 nm),featured by the efficient,environ-mentally friendly and continuous purification way,have been con-sidered as an ideal technology to dispose acidic wastewater[1,2].However,most polymer membranes suffer from structural insta-bility in acidic media[3].Consequently,the potential huge markets owing to demanding but rather underdeveloped acid-resistant NF membranes have promoted the urgently intensive research based on material and synthesis innovations.

Abstract:The studies introduced in this special issue aim to provide a state-of-the-art vision for nanomaterials-based technology that could profit the water treatment industry. Given the expanding crisis of water shortages across the world, this perspective is invaluable and of paramount importance. No doubt, as the environmental challenges are going to be more complicated and to extend to as-yet unconsidered areas, we need to upgrade our facilities and knowledge to address them properly. Nanomaterials are indeed promising building blocks for such advanced technologies that enable them to purify water streams from complex pollutants in an energy, cost and time-effective manner. The focus of the (review and original research) articles collected in this issue is on various kinds of nanomaterials made of carbon, polymer, metal, and metal oxides (magnetic and photocatalyst), that are employed for adsorption and photodegradation of heavy metals and organic pollutants, respectively. Here, I briefly review the insights given in these precious studies and suggest new directions for future research in this field.

Abstract:In the field of water purification, membrane separation technology plays a significant role. Electrospinning has emerged as a primary method to produce nanofiber membranes due to its straightforward, low cost, functional diversity, and process controllability. It is possible to flexibly control the structural characteristics of electrospun nanofiber membranes as well as carry out various membrane material combinations to make full use of their various properties, including high porosity, high selectivity, and microporous permeability to obtain high-performance water treatment membranes. These water separation membranes can satisfy the fast and efficient purification requirements in different water purification applications due to their high filtration efficiency. The current research on water treatment membranes is still focused on creating high-permeability membranes with outstanding selectivity, remarkable antifouling performance, superior physical and chemical performance, and long-term stability. This paper reviewed the preparation methods and properties of electrospun nanofiber membranes for water treatment in various fields, including microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, and other special applications. Lastly, various antifouling technologies and research progress of water treatment membranes were discussed, and the future development direction of electrospun nanofiber membranes for water treatment was also presented.

Abstract:Water shortage has always been a considerable challenge facing humanity, and desalination is considered one of the most promising solutions to the global freshwater resource crisis. Traditional desalination technologies often suffer from high energy consumption and high investment costs. Researchers focus on desalination membrane technology because of its advantages of energy saving, environmental protection, simple operation, cost-effectiveness, and so on. This article reviews the current status of research on nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, metal organic frameworks, molybdenum disulfide, and covalent organic frameworks and aquaporin for seawater desalination. It can be seen that these nanomaterials are widely used in membrane for reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, nanofiltration, membrane distillation, and capacitive deionization (CDI). Therefore, the membrane desalination technology is briefly classified and introduced. According to this review, the current exploration of nano membrane materials for seawater desalination mainly focuses on CDI. This review aims to better provide nanomembrane options for realizing cost-effective and industrial-scale commercial seawater desalination technologies.
