Abstract:In this chapter, the materials that can be used to fabricate membranes for water purification and recycling are briefly reviewed. Owing to its high effectiveness, freedom from chemical addition, simple system configuration and small footprint, membrane separation or membrane filtration has increasingly become the choice for water treatment technology and will continue to do so in the future. Materials for membrane fabrication can be classified into organic and inorganic. Base organic or polymeric materials that are commonly used to make pressure-driven membranes, including microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis, or electrical-driven membranes, such as ion-exchange membranes, are presented. Subsequently, polymer-based composite membranes consisting of two or more different kinds of polymers are discussed. Then, surface modification methods with functional materials to improve the performance of polymeric membranes or augment those base membranes with new properties are reviewed. Finally, inorganic materials and methods for inorganic membrane fabrication are briefly introduced.

Abstract:Reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) are widely used in many water treatment processes, such as seawater and brackish water desalination. Membranes with improved separation performance and antifouling properties can be prepared by incorporating nanoparticles into membrane matrix. A number of nanomaterials can serve as potential water transport channels and modify the structure and surface properties of the membrane thin film layers. Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) can benefit from the high performance of both the organic matrix and inorganic fillers, which are believed to be the next generation of novel membrane materials. Recent advances of the nanoparticle-filled RU, NF and forward osmosis (FO) MMMs are reviewed in this paper. The effects of nanomaterials with various properties on membrane structure and separation performance are discussed, including zeolites, nanotubes, mesoporous materials, pure metal, metallic oxides, graphene oxide and aquaporin. The dispersibility of nanofillers in MMMs and their compatibility with polymer matrix can be improved by surface modification. Different methods of nanoparticle addition and membrane preparation are also illustrated in detail. Based on the analysis of the recent works, the membrane formation and separation mechanisms are explored and the main problems of membrane synthesis and application are summarized. Finally, the future development of RO, NF and FO MMMs for water treatment process is suggested.

Abstract:Membrane separation has enjoyed tremendous advances in relevant material and engineering sciences, making it the fastest growing technology in water treatment. Although membranes as a broad-spectrum physical barrier have great advantages over conventional treatment processes in a myriad of applications, the need for higher selectivity and specificity in membrane separation is rising as we move to target contaminants at trace concentrations and to recover valuable chemicals from wastewater with low energy consumption. In this review, we discuss the drivers, fundamental science, and potential enabling materials for high selectivity membranes, as well as their applications in different water treatment processes. Membrane materials and processes that show promise to achieve high selectivity for water, ions, and small molecules—as well as the mechanisms involved—are highlighted. We further identify practical needs, knowledge gaps, and technological barriers in both material development and process design for high selectivity membrane processes. Finally, we discuss research priorities in the context of existing and future water supply paradigms.

Abstract:Conventional polymers, endowed with specific functionalities, are extensively utilized for filtering and extracting a diverse set of chemicals, notably metals, from solutions. The main structure of a polymer is an integral part for designing an efficient separating system. However, its chemical functionality further contributes to the selectivity, fabrication process, and resulting product morphology. One example would be a membrane that can be employed to selectively remove a targeted metal ion or chemical from a solution, leaving behind the useful components of the solution. Such membranes or products are highly sought after for purifying polluted water contaminated with toxic and heavy metals. An efficient water-purifying membrane must fulfill several requirements, including a specific morphology attained by the material with a specific chemical functionality and facile fabrication for integration into a purifying module Therefore, the selection of an appropriate polymer and its functionalization become crucial and determining steps. This review highlights the attempts made in functionalizing various polymers (including natural ones) or copolymers with chemical groups decisive for membranes to act as water purifiers. Among these recently developed membrane systems, some of the materials incorporating other macromolecules, e.g., MOFs, COFs, and graphene, have displayed their competence for water treatment. Furthermore, it also summarizes the self-assembly and resulting morphology of the membrane materials as critical for driving the purification mechanism. This comprehensive overview aims to provide readers with a concise and conclusive understanding of these materials for water purification, as well as elucidating further perspectives and challenges.

Abstract:Membrane technology offers the best options to "drought proof" mankind on an increasingly thirsty planet by purifying seawater or used (waste) water. Although desalination by reverse osmosis (RO) and wastewater treatment by membrane bioreactors are well established the various membrane technologies still need to be significantly improved in terms of separation properties, energy demand and costs. We can now define the ideal characteristics of membranes and advances in material science and novel chemistries are leading to increasingly effective membranes. However developments in membranes must be matched by improved device design and membrane engineering. It is likely that limitations in fluid mechanics and mass transfer will define the upper bounds of membrane performance. Nevertheless major advances and growth over the next 20 years can be anticipated with RO remaining as the key to desalination and reclamation, with other membrane processes growing in support and in niche areas.

Abstract:Membrane separation technology has shown great potential as an indispensable application in the growing energy demand. Desalination and gas separation is challenging membrane separation processes; among them, membrane materials play a crucial role. Many modern nanomaterials, such as inorganic-organic mixed nano -materials (covalent/metal-organic frameworks (COFs/MOFs)), can shape specific channels for conveying and separating target molecules due to their structural tunability. By combining novel nanomaterials with traditional polymeric materials, new opportunities have arisen, significantly improving performance and reducing energy consumption. This review aims to generalize the advantages and limitations of varying membrane materials, including organic and inorganic materials. Furthermore, emerging nanomaterials and new mixed matrix mate-rials are discussed from different perspectives. Finally, we proposed to combine outstanding membranes with various novel materials to enhance energy-efficient membrane materials' commercial applications.

Abstract:The aggravation of environmental problems such as water scarcity and air pollution has called upon the need for a sustainable solution globally. Membrane technology, owing to its simplicity, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness, has emerged as one of the favorable technologies for water and air purification. Among all of the membrane configurations, hollow fiber membranes hold promise due to their outstanding packing density and ease of module assembly. Herein, this review systematically outlines the fundamentals of hollow fiber membranes, which comprise the structural analyses and phase inversion mechanism. Furthermore, illustrations of the latest advances in the fabrication of organic, inorganic, and composite hollow fiber membranes are presented. Key findings on the utilization of hollow fiber membranes in microfiltration (MF), nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO), forward osmosis (FO), pervaporation, gas and vapor separation, membrane distillation, and membrane contactor are also reported. Moreover, the applications in nuclear waste treatment and biomedical fields such as hemodialysis and drug delivery are emphasized. Subsequently, the emerging R&D areas, precisely on green fabrication and modification techniques as well as sustainable materials for hollow fiber membranes, are highlighted. Last but not least, this review offers invigorating perspectives on the future directions for the design of next-generation hollow fiber membranes for various applications. As such, the comprehensive and critical insights gained in this review are anticipated to provide a new research doorway to stimulate the future development and optimization of hollow fiber membranes.

Abstract:Current development of membrane technology for purifying polluted water and wastewater is discussed in this review in accordance with its hybrid application with other types of water treatment methods such as adsorption, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), and biological activated sludge. This hybrid implementation aims are to lengthen membrane lifespan and elude severe fouling on the surface and pore of the membrane. Membrane material and fabrication technology were concisely included. Two prominent materials to fabricate membrane namely polymeric and ceramic are reviewed well along with the exploration of biopolymers based-materials such as starch and alginate. Several fabrication methods available to be implemented in research or industrial large scale including interfacial polymerization technique, non-solvent induced phase separation, temperature induced phase separation, electrospinning, and sintering are deliberately discussed. The next section includes fouling analysis involving reliable fouling mechanism namely Hermia’s models to help with the explanation of fouling occurrence during filtration. These models covers four different mechanisms namely complete blocking, standard blocking, intermediate blocking, and cake filtration models. Ultimately, recent research reporting the outcome of the hybridization of membrane and adsorption, biosorption, coagulation-flocculation, AOPs, and biological treatment using microorganism were properly reviewed. Overall, this review considerably promotes the findings of those works which mostly revealed positive outcome of the hybrid membrane system contributing to stronger foundation for future research.

Abstract:The development of facile, benign and energy-efficient water treatment technologies to produce clean water presents a major societal challenge. Membrane-based separation technologies stand out as an ideal solution for water treatment. PVDF-based polymer membranes are gaining popularity because of their desirable properties, such as high mechanical strength, thermal/chemical resistance, and favorable processing characteristics. This review comprehensively introduces the state-of-the-art strategies to modify and design high-performance PVDF membranes for water treatment. High-performance porous PVDF membranes introduced here focus on the pressure driven membrane process and membrane distillation. This review also covers the green fabrication of PVDF membranes, novel strategies to tailor the microstructure and surface properties, Janus and omniphobic PVDF membranes, emerging new materials-hybrid PVDF membranes containing novel 0D, 1D and 2D materials, and self-cleaning PVDF membranes for water treatment. Overall, this review aims to provide understanding of the fundamental science and engineering aspects underlying the use of PVDF and its copolymers for membrane fabrication as well as the challenges and opportunities to guide further advances towards the development of PVDF-based membrane technologies for a sustainable future.

Abstract:In the era of freshwater scarcity, the world seeks to limit overexploitation of all accessible resource of freshwater and also to recover potable water by treating wastewater. Various domestic, agricultural and industrial activities lead in generating high amount of wastewater from which water can be recovered for human needs. Over many years, conventional filtration process has gained success to some extent in effluents treatment for disposal. Yet, improvement in filtration process is necessary for advanced wastewater treatment in order to make the whole process handy and cost-effective. The functionality of membrane can be enhanced by incorporating polymers with novel functions in advanced membrane separation methods like microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) for reclaiming potable water from wastewaters, catalysis and biomedical applications. This book chapter mostly focuses on the use of different polymeric substances for MF and UF membrane preparation and their application in various sectors. Abstract:With the accelerating steps of urbanization, the freshwater scarcity has been emerging as a serious threat to sustainable economic and social development. Under this circumstance, increasing attention is shifting to alternative water sources, such as wastewater and seawater, to harvest the embedded freshwater for supplement. Membrane technology has been predominately applied in this scenario due to its huge advantages in separation efficiency and economic investment. However, the application, especially with polyamide (PA) composite membranes, is significantly limited by the unsatisfied water flux when reclaiming high-quality freshwater. Recently, covalent organic framework (COF)-based membranes with pure COF or COF-incorporated PA as the selective layer exhibited great promise in alleviating this current dilemma benefiting from its tunable aperture, regular channels and desirable hydrophilicity. Unfortunately, relative research works were mainly focusing on the structure-function relationship between COF and the resultant membrane. In the meantime, the accompa-nied reviews were derived mainly from summarizing membrane preparation processes and practical applications while paid insufficient attention in the separation mechanisms of the COF-based membranes, which are highly desired for directionally optimizing membrane performance from the theoretical perspective. Herein, the mechanisms involved in water purification through COF-based membranes are systematically investigated, especially in a novel view of adsorption. In addition, the up-to-date synthesis strategies of high-performance COF-based membranes are highlighted. Besides, the latest advances in structure-performance relationship of emerging COF-based membranes for wastewater purification and saltwater desalination are also described in this paper. This review aims to provide theoretical guidance and potential methods for design and preparation of next-generation COF-based membranes with higher-performance for high-quality recovery of freshwater.

Abstract:Membrane technology is widely accepted as a means of producing various qualities of water from surface water, well water, brackish water and seawater. Membrane technology is also used in industrial processes and in industrial wastewater treatment, and lately membrane technology has moved into the area of treating secondary and tertiary municipal wastewater and oil field produced water. In many cases one membrane process is followed by another with the purpose of producing water of increasing purity and quality for various purposes. One type of membrane may thus enhance the function of another to meet goals ranging from disposal of wastewater to production of drinking water from unexpected sources. In this way membrane technology offers the possibility of managing the total water resources in a region, which is of special interest in geographical areas where the natural water resources are scarce. The spiral wound membrane element configuration is the most widely used due to its high packing density and relatively low price. This paper will describe some technological advance in the area of innovative new membranes and application concepts for spiral wound membrane elements. Spiral wound elements span the four commonly defined membrane technologies, which are microfiltration (0.01-0 microns), ultrafiltration (500–100,000 Da), nanofiltration (100–500 Da), and reverse osmosis (up to 100 Da). A sandwich consisting of two membrane sheets with an inserted permeate carrier is glued together and to complete the membrane package a feed spacer is inserted between the opposing membrane surfaces. The membrane package is wound around a perforated central tube through which the permeate exits the element. The physical shape of a membrane element is secured by applying a suitable outer wrap. The physical and chemical properties of the various materials, including the membrane, are chosen according to the operating parameters. The typical reverse osmosis elements have limitations with respect to temperature (45°C), pH value (2–10), silt density index (less than 3 SDI), chlorine (dechlorination mandatory) and several other parameters. This is acceptable for conventional pure water applications, but for more complex membrane applications these limitations must be diminished or removed. Advanced materials and material science have been applied to the membranes, materials and construction of spiral wound elements. This effort has resulted in elements with improved operating parameters and wider areas of applications. A host of new membrane applications have been made possible and there is no limit in sight, except that new applications must rest on a profitable foundation for the user. Scarcity of water, environmental requirements and the simple logic of reusing water instead of discharging it are conditions, which call for increased use of membrane technology in a multitude of applications.

Advances in Porous Organic-Inorganic Composite Membranes

Abstract:Over the past decades, much attention has been paid to develope novel approaches towards water treatment, in particular the membrane filtration, to deal with the severe environmental crisis. One of the research foci is the organic-inorganic composite membranes for their advantages from both polymers and inorganics. In this review, we focus on the composite porous membranes and outline the advances in this field. In recent years, numerous of methods have been developed to fabricate such membranes, including blending, in situ generation, surface modification, atomic layer deposition, and biomineralization. The membranes can be categorized into two models according to the distribution of inorganics in the membrane: the embedding model and enveloping model. In addition, we summarize the practical applications of organic-inorganic composite membranes in antifouling and anti-bacterial uses, oil/water separation, catalysis, absorption, battery separator and enzyme immobilization. We suggest the "enveloping model" a better choice to construct the novel organic-inorganic composite membranes with high performance for its high surface mineral coverage.

Abstract:Synthetic polymer membranes are enabling components in key technologies at the water–energy nexus, including desalination and energy conversion, because of their high water/salt selectivity or ionic conductivity. However, many applications at the water–energy nexus require ion selectivity, or separation of specific ionic species from other similar species. Here, the ion selectivity of conventional polymeric membrane materials is assessed and recent progress in enhancing selective transport via tailored free volume elements and ion–membrane interactions is described. In view of the limitations of polymeric membranes, three material classes—porous crystalline materials, 2D materials, and discrete biomimetic channels—are highlighted as possible candidates for ion-selective membranes owing to their molecular-level control over physical and chemical properties. Lastly, research directions and critical challenges for developing bioinspired membranes with molecular recognition are provided.
