Abstract:AbstractDespite significant progress achieved in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) technology, control of product selectivity remains a challenge in syngas conversion. Herein, we demonstrate that Zn2+‐ion exchanged ZSM‐5 zeolite steers syngas conversion selectively to ethane with its selectivity reaching as high as 86 % among hydrocarbons (excluding CO2) at 20 % CO conversion. NMR spectroscopy, X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, and X‐ray fluorescence indicate that this is likely attributed to the highly dispersed Zn sites grafted on ZSM‐5. Quasi‐in‐situ solid‐state NMR, obtained by quenching the reaction in liquid N2, detects C2 species such as acetyl (‐COCH3) bonding with an oxygen, ethyl (‐CH2CH3) bonding with a Zn site, and epoxyethane molecules adsorbing on a Zn site and a Brønsted acid site of the catalyst, respectively. These species could provide insight into C−C bond formation during ethane formation. Interestingly, this selective reaction pathway toward ethane appears to be general because a series of other Zn2+‐ion exchanged aluminosilicate zeolites with different topologies (for example, SSZ‐13, MCM‐22, and ZSM‐12) all give ethane predominantly. By contrast, a physical mixture of ZnO‐ZSM‐5 favors formation of hydrocarbons beyond C3+. These results provide an important guide for tuning the product selectivity in syngas conversion.
Enhancing Methane Conversion by Modification of Zn States in Co-Reaction of MTA

Abstract:Limited by harsh reaction conditions, the activation and utilization of methane were regarded as holy grail reaction. Co-reaction with methanol, successfully realizing mild conversion below 450 °C, provides practical strategies for methane conversion on metal-loaded ZSM-5 zeolites, especially for highly efficient Zn loaded ones. However, Zn species, regarded as active acid sites on the zeolite, have not been sufficiently studied. In this paper, Zn-loaded ZSM-5 zeolite was prepared, and Zn was modified by capacity, loading strategy, and treating atmosphere. Apparent methane conversion achieves 15.3% for 1.0Zn/Z-H2 (16.8% as calculated net conversion) with a significantly reduced loading of 1.0 wt.% against deactivation, which is among the best within related zeolite materials. Besides, compared to the MTA reaction, the addition of methane promotes the high-valued aromatic production from 49.4% to 54.8%, and inhibits the C10+ production from 7.8% to 3.6%. Notably, Zn2+ is found to be another active site different from the reported ZnOH+. Medium strong acid sites are proved to be beneficial for methane activation. This work provides suggestions for the modification of the Zn active site, in order to prepare highly efficient catalysts for methane activation and BTX production in co-reaction with methanol.

Abstract:By combining reduced oxide and zeolite (e.g., ZnCrOx/MSAPO), bifunctional catalysts achieve outstanding olefin selectivity for syngas conversion via a relay process (CO + H-2 -> IM -> olefin) and are one of the hottest catalytic systems. However, the reaction mechanism on the reduced ZnCrOx as well as the intermediate (IM = ketene versus methanol) entering the zeolite are under heated debate owing to the complexity of this system. Herein, we perform systematic density functional theory (DFT) calculations and microkinetic simulations to inspect the possible elementary steps on the highly reduced ZnCr2O4(110) surface, which quantitatively unveils the favored reaction pathways for CO activation and conversion. We find that CO tends to adsorb at the two-coordinate O vacancy sites (V-O 2C)and reacts with H at V-O 2C to form CHO, while the disproportionation reaction and the direct C-O cleavage are less favored. Importantly, the conversion of CHO plays a vital role in product selectivity; the dissociation of CHO is identified to proceed easily and constitutes a major route responsible for the formation of CH4 and CH2CO, through the following pathway: CHO -> CH + O; CH + H -> CH2; CH2 + CO -> CH2CO; or CH2 + 2H -> CH4. Alternatively, CHO could undergo hydrogenation to give CH2O and CH3O intermediates, eventually leading to the formation of CH3OH and CH4. The kinetic analyses on such a complex reaction network disclose that CH4 is the dominant product, while both CH2CO and CH3OH (i.e., two experimentally controversial intermediates) exist in minority with CH2CO being relatively more readily formed. More interestingly, the kinetic model illustrates that the selectivity for CH2CO and the formation of triggered light olefins can be significantly improved over CH4 if a reaction channel converts CH2CO to light olefins when zeolite is added, providing insight into the bifunctionality of the oxide/zeolite system. Also, we demonstrate that high V-O 2C coverage is a prerequisite for high activity of CO activation, and the reason for high selectivity of CO2 and low selectivity of H2O is identified to the easier removal of the lattice oxygen by CO to generate CO2 than by H-2 to generate H2O. The understanding derived from this work could lay a solid theoretical foundation for comprehending the oxides for the syngas conversion mechanism.

Abstract:The urgent need for efficiency improvement in the oxide-zeolite bifunctional syngas-to-hydrocarbon catalysis necessitates in-depth mechanistic insights into this reaction, especially for the initial syngas conversion over the oxide component, which remains poor. Herein, we comprehensively investigated syngas conversion over a representative ZnAl 2 O 4 spinel oxide with state-of-the-art solid-state NMR technologies. Notably, specific surface dual active sites for syngas activation with –Al IV –OH···Zn III – structure were unambiguously identified. More importantly, the dynamic evolution of the reaction intermediates and active sites during the reaction process was elaborated at atomic level by a series of double resonance and multi-dimensional correlation NMR experiments. In combination with in situ spectroscopic characterizations, we revealed the full cycle of the formate-methoxy-based pathway for the syngas-to-methanol conversion via synergistic interplay of the dual active sites. The in-depth atomic-level understanding of the catalytic mechanism will be beneficial to further rational design of high-performance catalysts for syngas conversion.
First-principles-based microkinetic simulations of syngas to methanol conversion on ZnAl2O4 spinel oxide

Abstract:Identifying active site structure and unveiling corresponding reaction pathways are crucial issues to construct compatible reactive components in bifunctional catalysts for direct syngas conversion. Herein, the active surface structure and the reaction mechanism of syngas conversion to bridging intermediate methanol on ZnAl2O4 spinel oxide are systematically investigated by combining density functional theory calculations and microkinetic simulations. The hydroxylated oxygen-rich surfaces of ZnAl2O4 are demonstrated and their stabilities decreases as (100)-B-1/4H > (111)-B-3/8H > (110)-B-1/4H. Four reaction pathways differentiating in the adsorption site of CO and the participation style of H2 on these surfaces are kinetically compared. We reveal that ZnAl2O4(111) is the active surface for syngas conversion; CO bonding on O site is activated more readily in a stepwise way to CH2O and the concerted pathway is then followed for CH2O to methanol. On ZnAl2O4(100) and ZnAl2O4(110) surfaces, the Non-Horiuti-Polanyi pathway in which gaseous H2 reacting directly with CO or CH2O becomes kinetically more important. The Zn-O site of ZnAl2O4(111) is essential to dissociate H2 heterolytically and stabilize key intermediate CHO. We show that the reaction rate decreases with the CO conversion, and the simulated reaction rate (~13 s−1) at 8% conversion agrees quite well with the experimental one (~20 s−1) under the typical reaction conditions. The predicted activity plots with temperature and CO conversion highlight the driving essentiality of zeolite component in bifunctional catalysts for syngas conversion.

Abstract:The emerging oxide–zeolite bifunctional catalysis for direct syngas conversion has drawn extensive interest, both academically and industrially, with further exploration urging a clear mechanistic understanding of this complex catalytic network. Herein, using a specially designed quasi-in situ, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance-gas chromatography/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis strategy, this reaction is fully monitored from the very early induction period to steady-state conversion under high-pressure flow-reaction conditions, using ZnAlO x /H-ZSM-5 composites as model catalysts. We identify abundant critical and/or transient intermediates in dynamic evolution, including carboxylates, alkoxyls, acid-bounded methyl-cyclopentenones and methyl-cyclopentenyl carbocations, providing direct evidence of vigorous regulation by unique, oxygenate-based pathways of the reaction network. This proposed mechanism overturns the general cognition of oxide–zeolite reactions as simple tandem catalysis, and highlights the many roles (both positive and negative) of CO and H 2 molecules via oxygenate-based routes, thus dictating the final product. The current characterization technology and its mechanistic understanding would benefit further exploration in bifunctional catalysis.

Abstract:One-step conversion of syngas to aromatics (STA) over an oxide-zeolite bifunctional catalyst is promising as an alternative route for aromatic production. Control of aromatic distribution and enhancement of benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) selectivity are still a big challenge. Decoupling the complex reaction network, the relative activity of aromatization and alkylation on ZSM-5 determines the aromatic distribution. Herein, the STA reaction was studied over Cr2O3/ZSM-5 to reveal the influence of the zeolite morphology parameters on aromatic distribution. Using the "substitution ratio of aromatic ring" SC9+/A to reflect the relative rate of alkylation to aromatization, the linear dependence of SC9+/A on the morphology parameter (1/b) of ZSM5 was revealed. The methodology for control of aromatic distribution by altering the crystal size of ZSM-5 along the b-axis is then proposed. By further enhancing the aromatization activity via ion exchange of Zn to ZSM-5, a bifunctional catalyst showing a high BTX space time yield of 2.47 mmol g(-1) h(-1) (on carbon base) with 49.1% BTX fraction is developed.
Transformation of Syngas to Light Hydrocarbons over Bifunctional CuO–ZnO/SAPO-34 Catalysts: the Effect of Preparation Methods

Abstract:Two series of bifunctional catalysts CuO–ZnO/SAPO-34 were prepared by isometric impregnation and milling calcination. The catalyst samples with different composition ratios have been investigated in the direct transformation of syngas to light hydrocarbons. Furthermore, all the samples were characterized by SEM, XRD, BET, H2-TPR and NH3-TPD techniques. The catalytic reactions were conducted with a feeding gas mixture of CO and H2 at 320 °C and 3.0 MPa. The results indicate that the preparation methods have significant effect on the catalysts performance. Though both series of catalysts could realize the direct transformation and the catalysts prepared by the milling calcination method facilitated a little more syngas to convert, the catalysts prepared by the impregnation method led to higher light hydrocarbons selectivity and less unexpected byproduct like CO2, since these serious catalysts displayed a smaller amount of metallic solid solution, a stronger interaction between the loaded metallic particles and supportive zeolites, more appropriate acidity strength as well.
One-step Conversion of Syngas to Hydrocarbons and Ethers over ZIF-8 Derived ZnO Coupling HZSM-5

Abstract:Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) were synthesized by solvothermal method. Used as precursor, ZIF-8 was decomposed into nanoparticles ZnO at different pyrolysis temperature in air atmosphere. The composition, structure and crystal size of ZnO were characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, and Raman methods. The ZnO nanoparticles were coupled with HZSM-5 to form bifunctional catalysts. The catalytic performances of bifunctional catalysts in the syngas conversion were investigated in a fixed-bed tubular reactor. The results demonstrate that the pyrolysis temperature has an important influence on the particle size of ZnO. The temperature affects the rate of grain formation. High temperature promotes the aggregation of ZnO. The ZnO grain size by changing the temperature plays a role in changing the product distribution. When the pyrolysis temperature is near or below 450°C, carbon-coated ZnO nanoparticles are obtained, and the ZnO grain size is less than 20 nm. The carbon-coated ZnO coupled with HZSM-5 catalyzes syngas mainly into dimethyl ether (DME). When the temperature is higher than 450°C, pure phase ZnO nanoparticles are obtained, and the ZnO grain size is larger than 20 nm. The pure ZnO coupled with HZSM-5 catalyzes syngas mainly into hydrocarbons. Obviously, the coupling modes of ZnO and HZSM-5 have a significant effect on the product selectivity of bifunctional catalysts.
Mechanistic exploration of syngas conversion at the interface of graphene/Cu(111): Identifying the effect of promoted electron transfer on the product selectivity

Abstract:Syngas conversion into ethanol is a promising pathway to obtain an attractive alternative fuel, but its selectivity is not ideal. Here, we used a combination of density functional theory calculations and microkinetic modeling to study the reaction mechanism of syngas conversion at the confined graphene/Cu(111) interface. It was found that the confinement using a 2D graphene cover promotes the formation of the key intermediate CH 3 through H-assisted CH 3 O dissociation and the production of CH 4 , but suppresses the formation of CH 3 OH. Moreover, C 2 H 5 OH is the most competitive product with CH 4 through CHO insertion into the easily generated CH 3 species to complete the carbon chain growth. Detailed DOS and Bader charge results revealed that covering 2D graphene promotes the electron transfer along the direction vertical to the Cu(111) surface, leads to the charge redistribution of the confined space, and eventually affects on the product selectivity of syngas conversion. The corresponding degree of rate control analysis showed that the final hydrogenation step of CH 3 and CH 3 CHOH limit the rate of the production of CH 4 and C 2 H 5 OH, respectively. Furthermore, the adsorbed hydroxyl is identified as the rate controlling intermediate. Our findings provide a useful guide for further modification of Cu-based catalysts for syngas to ethanol conversion.

Abstract:Aromatics are important basic chemicals. However, direct conversion of syngas via the conventional Fischer-Tropsch synthesis produces little aromatics. We presented herein that a bifunctional composite of ZSM-5 in combination with ZnCrOx catalyzes syngas conversion to aromatics. Particularly, ZSM-5 crystals with a sheet-like morphology can enhance significantly the aromatization activity. The lower length ratio of the b/a axes of the crystals, the more aromatics form but without influencing the selectivity of small molecules such as CH4 and C2–C4. Since the acid properties and the Al chemical environment were not altered while the morphology changed, the enhanced aromatic selectivity is likely attributed to the favored diffusion of aromatics in these sheet-like crystals.
Visualization of the Active Sites of Zinc-Chromium Oxides and the CO/H2 Activation Mechanism in Direct Syngas Conversion

Abstract:Despite wide studies demonstrating the versatility of the metal oxide-zeolite (OXZEO) catalyst concept to tackle the selectivity challenge in syngas chemistry, the active sites of metal oxides and the mechanism of CO/H2 activation remain to be elucidated. Herein, we demonstrate experimentally the role of Cr in zinc-chromium oxides and unveil visually, for the first time, the active sites for CO activation employing scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy using the volumetric density of surface carbon species as a descriptor. The ZnCr2O4 spinel surface with atomic ZnOx overlayer is the most active site for C-O bond dissociation, particularly at the narrow ZnCr2O4(110) facets constrained between the (311) and (111) facets, followed by the Cr-doped wurtzite ZnO surface. In comparison, the surfaces of ZnCr2O4 with aggregated ZnOx overlayers, pure ZnO, and the stoichiometric ZnCr2O4 exhibit a significantly lower activity. In situ synchrotron-based vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometric study on different temperature programmed surface reactions with isotopes of C18O, 13CO, and D2 validates direct CO dissociation over ZnCrn oxides in CO, forming CH2 and further to hydrocarbons if H2 is present and CH2CO intermediates in syngas. The activity of CO dissociation and hydrogenation over ZnCrn oxides correlates well with the syngas-to-light-olefins activity of ZnCrn-SAPO-18 composite catalysts as a function of the Cr/Zn ratio.
Selective Conversion of Syngas to Propane over ZnCrOx-SSZ-39 OX-ZEO Catalysts

Abstract:Oxide-Zeolite (OX-ZEO) bifunctional catalyst design concept has been exemplified in several processes to direct conversion syngas to value-added chemicals and fuels such as mixed light olefins, ethylene, aromatics and gasoline. Herein we demonstrate that the product can be steered toward liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with a selectivity up to 89% in hydrocarbons especially propane selectivity reaching 80% at CO conversion of 63% using ZnCrOx-H-SSZ-39 catalyst. Interestingly, the quantity of the acid sites of SSZ-39 does not influence obviously the hydrocarbon distribution but the strength is crucial for selective formation of propane. This finding provides an alternative route of LPG synthesis from a variety of carbon resources via syngas.
Identification of Active Sites over MCM-49 for Direct Syngas Conversion to Gasoline

Abstract:Elucidating the catalytic roles of the acid sites in different pore systems of zeolite is of great significance for the optimization of zeolite catalysts but remains a challenge. Herein, we show that the accessibility of the acid sites in different pores of MCM-49 is tuned by sulfuric acid during crystallization, as revealed by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. This allows the identification of the active sites for selective formation of gasoline in direct syngas conversion over the ZnCrOx -HMCM-49 (oxide-zeolite, OXZEO) catalyst. It reveals that the acid sites in the sinusoidal channels are active for gasoline formation, whereas the acid sites in the supercages favor the production of light paraffins and are also prone to deactivation. This fundamental understanding is essential for further optimization of catalysts for syngas conversion to gasoline.

Abstract:Direct conversion of syngas to light olefins using bifunctional catalysts containing both oxides and zeolites represents a promising alternative in comparison with Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. It is still a great challenge to achieve highly selective production of ethylene and propylene at a satisfying CO conversion for potentially industrial applications. Here, we report that a high selectivity to ethylene and propylene can be achieved by tailoring silicoaluminophosphate zeolite structure and acid site strength. By comparing bifunctional catalysts composed of ZnCr oxide and different zeolites with 8-membered ring openings, we achieve the total selectivity of 76.4% in ethylene and propylene at a CO conversion as high as 38.2% by catalysts containing SAPO-17 zeolite (ERI framework). The detailed hydrocarbon distribution is nearly identical to that in the methanol-to-olefins reaction. The high selectivity can be rationalized due to both smaller 8-membered ring openings and the weaker Bronsted acid strength of SAPO-17 zeolites.

Abstract:Significant progress has been demonstrated in the development of bifunctional oxide-zeolite catalyst concept to tackle the selectivity challenge in syngas chemistry. Despite general recognition on the importance of defect sites of metal oxides for CO/H2 activation, the actual structure and catalytic roles are far from being well understood. We demonstrate here that syngas conversion can be steered along a highly active and selective pathway towards light olefins via ketene-acetate (acetyl) intermediates by the surface with coordination unsaturated metal species, oxygen vacancies and zinc vacancies over ZnGaOx spinel-SAPO-34 composites. It gives 75.6% light-olefins selectivity and 49.5% CO conversion. By contrast, spinel-SAPO-34 containing only a small amount of oxygen vacancies and zinc vacancies gives only 14.9% light olefins selectivity at 6.6% CO conversion under the same condition. These findings reveal the importance to tailor the structure of metal oxides with coordination unsaturated metal sites/oxygen vacancies in selectivity control within the oxide-zeolite framework for syngas conversion and being anticipated also for CO2 hydrogenation.
