Abstract:The direct synthesis of light olefins from syngas via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction is a promising technology for direct synthesis of olefins from syngas. The key is to improve the selectivity of light olefins through the regulation of product distribution. In this work, the hydrophobic Fe@Si catalyst was prepared by room temperature solid state methodStober-silylation method, and then the catalyst was combined with SAPO-34 molecular sieves with different contents to prepare Fe@Si/S-34 composite catalysts. The effects of SAPO-34 molecular sieve content on the physicochemical properties of the catalysts were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, N-2 adsorption-desorption, NH3 temperature programmed desorption and water contact angle measurement. The results showed that the content of SAPO-34 molecular sieve has significant influence on the surface area, pore volume, acidity and hydrophobicity of the catalysts. With the increase of SAPO-34 molecular sieve content, the specific surface area and total pore volume of the catalyst increased, the weak acid and medium-strong acid sites increased, and the hydrophobicity weakened. The catalytic performance evaluation results showed that the Fe@Si/S-34 composite catalyst decomposed C5+ hydrocarbons into light hydrocarbons, significantly reduced the selectivity of C5+ products and increased the selectivity of C2 similar to C4 hydrocarbons. Appropriate SAPO-34 molecular sieve could significantly improve the selectivity of C2 similar to C-4 olefins. When the mass ratio of Fe@Si catalyst to SAPO-34 is 2, the C-2 similar to C-4 olefin selectivity of Fe@Si/S-34 catalyst is the highest, the conversion of CO is 80.0%, the selectivity of CO2 in the product is 8.9%, and the selectivity of C-2 similar to C-4 olefins is 31.1%. In this study, the hydrophobicity of Fe@Si catalyst and the cracking activity of SAPO-34 molecular sieve for C5+ hydrocarbon were coupled together to inhibit the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction, reduce the CO2 selectivity and obtain higher C-2 similar to C-4 olefin selectivity, which provided a new strategy for the development of catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to olefins.
C−C Bond Formation in Syngas Conversion over Zinc Sites Grafted on ZSM‐5 Zeolite

Abstract:AbstractDespite significant progress achieved in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) technology, control of product selectivity remains a challenge in syngas conversion. Herein, we demonstrate that Zn2+‐ion exchanged ZSM‐5 zeolite steers syngas conversion selectively to ethane with its selectivity reaching as high as 86 % among hydrocarbons (excluding CO2) at 20 % CO conversion. NMR spectroscopy, X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, and X‐ray fluorescence indicate that this is likely attributed to the highly dispersed Zn sites grafted on ZSM‐5. Quasi‐in‐situ solid‐state NMR, obtained by quenching the reaction in liquid N2, detects C2 species such as acetyl (‐COCH3) bonding with an oxygen, ethyl (‐CH2CH3) bonding with a Zn site, and epoxyethane molecules adsorbing on a Zn site and a Brønsted acid site of the catalyst, respectively. These species could provide insight into C−C bond formation during ethane formation. Interestingly, this selective reaction pathway toward ethane appears to be general because a series of other Zn2+‐ion exchanged aluminosilicate zeolites with different topologies (for example, SSZ‐13, MCM‐22, and ZSM‐12) all give ethane predominantly. By contrast, a physical mixture of ZnO‐ZSM‐5 favors formation of hydrocarbons beyond C3+. These results provide an important guide for tuning the product selectivity in syngas conversion.
Enhanced Aromatic Selectivity by the Sheet-Like ZSM-5 in Syngas Conversion

Abstract:Aromatics are important basic chemicals. However, direct conversion of syngas via the conventional Fischer-Tropsch synthesis produces little aromatics. We presented herein that a bifunctional composite of ZSM-5 in combination with ZnCrOx catalyzes syngas conversion to aromatics. Particularly, ZSM-5 crystals with a sheet-like morphology can enhance significantly the aromatization activity. The lower length ratio of the b/a axes of the crystals, the more aromatics form but without influencing the selectivity of small molecules such as CH4 and C2–C4. Since the acid properties and the Al chemical environment were not altered while the morphology changed, the enhanced aromatic selectivity is likely attributed to the favored diffusion of aromatics in these sheet-like crystals.

Abstract:Directly synthesizing olefins from syngas using metal-zeolite composite catalysts has engrossed a lot of attention recently. Fe-based catalysts will be the most promising industrial candidates due to cost and availability con-straints. In this work, we investigate the characteristics and Fischer-Tropsch activity of a novel Fe@Na-ZSM-5 composite for one-step conversion of syngas to higher olefins (C5+). The in-situ crystallization mechanism induced Na in the ZSM-5 as a Fe-based promoter which realized 52.5 % selectivity for gasoline of which similar to 70% were olefins. Additionally, the promotion by the Na ions enhanced the formation of Fe5C2 phases which in turn favored C-C coupling, high gasoline and olefins selectivity. Na type zeolite (Na-Zeolite) offers a novel Na electron promoter, which participate immensely in the development of heterogenous catalyst and functional materials.

Abstract:irect synthesis of aromatics from syngas is a great challenge because of severe operating conditions and low yield of aromatics. Making this process more competitive than the MTA (methanol to aromatics) process will require high energy efficiency and low CO2 emission. A combination of Na-Zn-Fe5C2 and hierarchical HZSM-5 with uniform mesopores dramatically changed the product distribution of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, leading to 51% aromatic selectivity under the stable stage with CO conversion >85%. C12+ heavy hydrocarbons almost disappeared, and the catalyst showed good stability. The hierarchical zeolitic structure and Bronsted acidity of HZSM-5 could be precisely tuned by controlling the alkali treatment conditions and the degree of ion exchange. The appropriate density and strength of the Bronsted acid sites and the hierarchical pore structure of HZSM-5 endowed the catalyst with an unprecedented aromatic yield. This work shows a broad area for development for syngas conversion.

Abstract:Ceria-zirconia solid solutions with tunable surface oxygen vacancy have been used in the direct conversion of syngas into aromatics after coupling with ZSM-5 zeolite. A high selectivity of 83.1% to aromatics has been achieved from syngas with low H-2/CO ratio over Ce0.2Zr0.8O2/ZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst. The surface oxygen vacancy of Ce0.2Zr0.8O2 is supposed to facilitate the formation of oxygenates which act as intermediates for C-C coupling and aromatization on ZSM-5, and thus contribute to the well kinetic matching between C-O activation and C-C coupling over these two components of catalyst. The ceria-zirconia with abundant surface oxygen vacancies and enhanced lattice oxygen mobility intimately mixed with ZSM-5 zeolite with moderate acidity and crystal size play an important role in the catalytic performance.

Abstract:Direct conversion of syngas into hydrocarbons with high selectivity remains a challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of a core-shell-structured catalyst constituting Cr-Zn oxide as the core and SAPO-34 as the shell for the conversion of syngas into hydrocarbons with high selectivity. A SiO2 layer was sandwiched between the core and the shell to prevent damage to the core during shell synthesis. Furthermore, the intermediate SiO2 layer acted as a Si source for the formation of the shell. The prepared catalyst displayed considerably higher selectivity toward the production of C-2-C-4 hydrocarbons (66.9%) than that of methanol and methane. The findings show the potential of the prepared core-shell-structured catalyst in the one-step production of hydrocarbons, such as liquefied petroleum gas, from syngas. Abstract:The traditional Fischer–Tropsch synthesis generates products with a distribution that follows a theoretical restriction, suffering from low selectivity toward desired products. Recent use of metal oxide–zeolite bifunctional catalysts has allowed a break of such a restriction, accompanied by residual CO molecules. In these systems, CO conversion is usually low and the presence of residual CO molecules would accompany the diffusion of intermediates into the zeolite pores and the subsequent transformation. However, the relationship between CO and the selectivity is elusive. Herein, in a CoMn oxides/H-β zeolite system, we demonstrate that CO molecules could not only improve the strength of the acidity and increase the ratio of B acid sites to L acid sites of the zeolite but also help to stabilize the intermediate allylic carbonium ion. Hence, high selectivities of 73.5% toward iso-paraffins and 61.2% toward isobutane were achieved. Abstract:The metal oxide-zeolite (OX-ZEO) bifunctional catalyst concept has aroused wide interest recently for direct syngas conversion. However, the mechanism of product selectivity control is far from being understood. Herein, we studied the role of acidity on the product selectivity by taking SAPO-18 as an example and physically mixing it with ZnCrOx because its Si/Al ratio can be varied in a relatively wide range. The results demonstrate a strong dependence of the product selectivity on the Si/Al ratio. Light olefin selectivity reaches as high as 81.6% with CO conversion 35.5% at Si/Al ratio = 0.011. A higher Si/Al ratio gives a stronger acid strength and higher acid density, which leads to a reduced ratio of olefins/paraffins (O/P) and an increased C3/C2 ratio in the products. This could be attributed to the enhanced secondary reactions of ethylene under a H2-rich atmosphere of syngas conversion. Abstract:Oxide-Zeolite (OX-ZEO) bifunctional catalyst design concept has been exemplified in several processes to direct conversion syngas to value-added chemicals and fuels such as mixed light olefins, ethylene, aromatics and gasoline. Herein we demonstrate that the product can be steered toward liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with a selectivity up to 89% in hydrocarbons especially propane selectivity reaching 80% at CO conversion of 63% using ZnCrOx-H-SSZ-39 catalyst. Interestingly, the quantity of the acid sites of SSZ-39 does not influence obviously the hydrocarbon distribution but the strength is crucial for selective formation of propane. This finding provides an alternative route of LPG synthesis from a variety of carbon resources via syngas.

Abstract:Direct conversion of syngas to aromatics over metal oxide‐zeolite (OX‐ZEO) composite catalysts is a novel route for efficient utilization of carbon resources. To realize a high activity with considerable selectivity to aromatics and stability, the design of synergetic OX‐ZEO catalyst to meet complex kinetics still remains a great challenge. In this work, a synergetic dual‐oxide/zeolite catalyst was developed to tune the coupling between CO and H2 activation through active H species migration, by adopting ZnZrOx oxide with stable single‐layer Zn−O structure for H2 activation and CeZrOx oxide with abundant oxygen vacancies as the CO activation component. The ratio and the proximity of CeZrOx and ZnZrOx is essential for the catalyst activity and stability. The optimal catalyst 1CeZrOx‐2ZnZrOx/Z5@Si shows a superior catalytic performance with 75.6 % aromatics selectivity at a CO conversion as high as 57.5 %. After induction period, the catalyst exhibits excellent stability for 1100 h, keeping the high selectivity above 75 % with an average conversion of 43 %. This work will provide a new perspective to design a high performance and long‐life OX‐ZEO composite catalyst for direct conversion of syngas to high value chemicals. A synergetic dual‐oxide/zeolite catalyst composed of CeZrOx, ZnZrOx metal oxides and silica modified ZSM‐5 is developed for syngas conversion to aromatics, which exhibits long‐life catalytic performance with aromatics selectivity over 75 % at average CO conversion over 43 % during 1100 h of reaction. The interaction manner between CeZrOx and ZnZrOx is of vital importance in enhancing CO activation and improving the stability of the composite catalyst.

Abstract:Syngas conversion by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is characterized by a wide distribution of hydrocarbon products ranging from one to a few carbon atoms. Reported here is that the product selectivity is effectively steered toward ethylene by employing the oxide-zeolite (OX-ZEO) catalyst concept with ZnCrOx-mordenite (MOR). The selectivity of ethylene alone reaches as high as 73% among other hydrocarbons at a 26% CO conversion. This selectivity is significantly higher than those obtained in any other direct syngas conversion or the multistep process methanol-to-olefin conversion. This highly selective pathway is realized over the catalytic sites within the 8-membered ring (8MR) side pockets of MOR via a ketene intermediate rather than methanol in the 8MR or 12MR channels. This study provides substantive evidence for a new type of syngas chemistry with ketene as the key reaction intermediate and enables extraordinary ethylene selectivity within the OX-ZEO catalyst framework.
Direct Conversion of Syngas into Methyl Acetate, Ethanol and Ethylene by Relay Catalysis via Dimethyl Ether Intermediate.

Abstract:Selective conversion of syngas (CO/H-2) into C2+ oxygenates is a highly attractive but challenging target. Herein, we report the direct conversion of syngas into methyl acetate (MA) by relay catalysis. MA can be formed at a lower temperature (ca. 473K) using Cu-Zn-Al oxide/H-ZSM-5 and zeolite mordenite (H-MOR) catalysts separated by quartz wool (denoted as Cu-Zn-Al/H-ZSM-5 vertical bar H-MOR) and also at higher temperatures (603-643K) without significant deactivation using spinel-structured ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR. The selectivity of MA and acetic acid (AA) reaches 87% at a CO conversion of 11% at 643K. Dimethyl ether (DME) is the key intermediate and the carbonylation of DME results in MA with high selectivity. We found that the relay catalysis using ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR vertical bar ZnAl2O4 gives ethanol as the major product, while ethylene is formed with a layer-by-layer ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR vertical bar ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR combination. Close proximity between ZnAl2O4 and H-MOR increases ethylene selectivity to 65%.

Abstract:Direct syngas conversion to hydrocarbons was investigated with HZSM-5 physically mixed with either a methanol synthesis catalyst (5Pd/ZnO/Al2O3) or a higher alcohols synthesis (HAS) catalyst. Reactivity measurements show a definitive advantage in using HAS catalysts. Undesired durene formation is negligible with HAS catalysts but it represents 50% of the C-5(+) fraction for 5Pd/ZnO/Al2O3. Furthermore, the desired C-5(+) hydrocarbons yield is twice higher with selected HAS catalysts. The 0.5Pd/FeCoCu (HAS) catalyst was found the most promising due to higher C-5(+) fraction and lower durene formation. When 0.5Pd/FeCoCu and HZSM-5 are operated sequentially (two-step process), the CO conversion and the C-5(+) hydrocarbons fraction are lower. The C-5(+) hydrocarbons yield is thus twice higher for the one-step process. The main advantage of the one-step process is that higher syngas conversion is achieved as the equilibrium-driven conversion limitations for methanol and dimethyl ether are removed since they are intermediates to the final hydrocarbons product.

Abstract:Small olefins from syngas The conversion of coal or natural gas to liquid fuels or chemicals often proceeds through the production of CO and H 2 . This mixture, known as syngas, is then converted to hydrocarbons with Fischer-Tropsch catalysts. For the light olefins (ethylene to butylenes) needed for chemical and polymer synthesis, conventional catalysts are mechanistically limited to <60% conversion and deactivate through carbon buildup. Jiao et al. developed a bifunctional catalyst that achieves higher conversions and avoids deactivation (see the Perspective by de Jong). Synergistic interplay of dual active sites on spinel ZnAl2O4 for syngas conversion

Abstract:The urgent need for efficiency improvement in the oxide-zeolite bifunctional syngas-to-hydrocarbon catalysis necessitates in-depth mechanistic insights into this reaction, especially for the initial syngas conversion over the oxide component, which remains poor. Herein, we comprehensively investigated syngas conversion over a representative ZnAl 2 O 4 spinel oxide with state-of-the-art solid-state NMR technologies. Notably, specific surface dual active sites for syngas activation with –Al IV –OH···Zn III – structure were unambiguously identified. More importantly, the dynamic evolution of the reaction intermediates and active sites during the reaction process was elaborated at atomic level by a series of double resonance and multi-dimensional correlation NMR experiments. In combination with in situ spectroscopic characterizations, we revealed the full cycle of the formate-methoxy-based pathway for the syngas-to-methanol conversion via synergistic interplay of the dual active sites. The in-depth atomic-level understanding of the catalytic mechanism will be beneficial to further rational design of high-performance catalysts for syngas conversion.
Resolving the Intricate Mechanism and Selectivity of Syngas Conversion on Reduced ZnCr 2 O x : A Quantitative Study from DFT and Microkinetic Simulations

Abstract:By combining reduced oxide and zeolite (e.g., ZnCrOx/MSAPO), bifunctional catalysts achieve outstanding olefin selectivity for syngas conversion via a relay process (CO + H2 → IM → olefin) and are one of the hottest catalytic systems. However, the reaction mechanism on the reduced ZnCrOx as well as the intermediate (IM = ketene versus methanol) entering the zeolite are under heated debate owing to the complexity of this system. Herein, we perform systematic density functional theory (DFT) calculations and microkinetic simulations to inspect the possible elementary steps on the highly reduced ZnCr2O4(110) surface, which quantitatively unveils the favored reaction pathways for CO activation and conversion. We find that CO tends to adsorb at the two-coordinate O vacancy sites (VO 2C) and reacts with H at VO 2C to form CHO, while the disproportionation reaction and the direct C–O cleavage are less favored. Importantly, the conversion of CHO plays a vital role in product selectivity; the dissociation of CHO is identified to proceed easily and constitutes a major route responsible for the formation of CH4 and CH2CO, through the following pathway: CHO → CH + O; CH + H → CH2; CH2 + CO → CH2CO; or CH2 + 2H → CH4. Alternatively, CHO could undergo hydrogenation to give CH2O and CH3O intermediates, eventually leading to the formation of CH3OH and CH4. The kinetic analyses on such a complex reaction network disclose that CH4 is the dominant product, while both CH2CO and CH3OH (i.e., two experimentally controversial intermediates) exist in minority with CH2CO being relatively more readily formed. More interestingly, the kinetic model illustrates that the selectivity for CH2CO and the formation of triggered light olefins can be significantly improved over CH4 if a reaction channel converts CH2CO to light olefins when zeolite is added, providing insight into the bifunctionality of the oxide/zeolite system. Also, we demonstrate that high VO 2C coverage is a prerequisite for high activity of CO activation, and the reason for high selectivity of CO2 and low selectivity of H2O is identified to the easier removal of the lattice oxygen by CO to generate CO2 than by H2 to generate H2O.
