Abstract:The operation of modern power grid is becoming more complicated and difficult, for such as the fluctuation caused by large-scaled wind power integration. So, a coordinated optimal control method focused on traditional controllers and FACTS (Flexible Alternative Current Transmission Systems) is proposed combined of their different merits both in time and space scale. For easier study, only the generator, FSC (Fixed Series Compensation) and TCSC (Thyristor Controlled Series Compensation) is considered in this paper. Firstly, the coordination of different space scale is studied, where the bulk power grid is divided into several sub-regions and a kind of two-layer frame is presented. Then, the coordination of different time scale is also studied, where the time dimension is divided into three layers including day-ahead schedule (24hour), short-term dispatch (5–15min), and generation control (5–20sec). After that, the correctness and improvement of these methods are verified in IEEE-39 bus case. Finally, the simulation case on real power grid of SGCC is carried on with PSASP software, and the effectiveness is analyzed.

Abstract:This paper proposes a real-time power flow optimal control method for hybrid AC/DC power systems with VSCHVDC (Voltage Sourced Converter based HVDC). Sufficiently considered the operation characteristics of Xiamen VSC-HVDC engineering system and the features of the coupling relationship between VSC-HVDC transmission paths and other ordinary AC transmission paths under different operation conditions, the proposed method achieves the multiple optimization targets of reducing the power systems total loss and balancing the load rate among the crucial transmission paths. This method is applied in the EMS (Energy Management System) of Fujian province to implement the real-time power flow optimal control for the hybrid AC/DC power system with VSC-HVDC, and therefore to enhance the power system safety and economy.

Abstract:The operation of power systems faces many uncertainties. How to maximumly decrease the operation cost while ensuring the operational reliability of power systems is always the concern of operators. Terefore, the concept, model and algorithm of optimal control for operational reliability were proposed. The purpose of optimal control is to find an optimal operating point to balance cost and benefit of operational reliability, and provide an effective on-line decision-aid for operators. The mathematical model on optimal control was developed with the objective function of minimizing the expected social cost. The control variables are real power outputs of generators, bus voltage magnitudes, and reactive outputs of synchronous condensers. The constraints are power flows. The improved particle swarm optimization algorithm was used to search the solution. The comparison of optimal power flow, security-constrained power flow and optimal control of operational reliability was made by using the IEEE RTS-79 and a practical power system in the southwest of China. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithm. © Chin. Soc. for Elec. Eng.
Optimal reactive power flow model for AC/DC hybrid power grid with voltage source converters

Abstract:With the commissioning of Xiamen flexible HVDC transmission system, Fujian power grid has become an AC/DC hybrid power grid with voltage source converters. This paper presents an optimal reactive power flow model with voltage source converters, which is solved by branch and bound method and primal dual interior point method. The proposed model and related solving method have been tested on the automatic voltage control (AVC) system of Fujian power grid. The optimal control policies on generators, capacitors, reactors, OLTCs, and voltage source converters are calculated online, and the control performance is satisfactory.

Abstract:At present,high voltage (HV)reactors are mainly used to restrain the power frequency overvoltage and secondary arc current,not for the voltage control purpose.With the spreading and changing of power grid,part of HV reactors cannot be put into operation.In order to improve the use efficiency of assets,an optimization configuration method of HV reactor was proposed.Firstly,this method comprehensively considered the capacitance effect and power loss of transmission lines,as well as the existing inductive reactive power compensation degree of the two end stations of the lines;and set of alternative configuration schemes were designed for HV reactors.Then,a comprehensive evaluation system of reactive voltage was established for the configuration schemes of HV reactors with considering the maximum voltage fluctuation and deviation,average power loss,and switching action quantity of inactive power adjusting devices as evaluation indexes.A weighted method based on the variance of fuzzy memberships was introduced for a more scientific and objective optimal scheme decision strategy.Finally,combined with the configuration problem of HV reactors in Shaanxi power grid, the proposed method was proved to be effective and feasible.

Abstract:The main objective of the optimal power flow (OPF) problem is to determine the optimal steady-state operation of an electric power system while satisfying engineering and economic constraints. With the structural deregulation of electric power systems, OPF is becoming a basic tool in the power market hi this paper, a two-stage solution algorithm developed for Solving OPF problems has several distinguished features: it numerically detects the existence of feasible solutions an(] quickly locates them. The theoretical basis of stage I is that, the set; of stable equilibrium manifolds of the quotient gradient system (QGS) is a, set of feasible components of the original OPF problem. The first stage of this algorithm is a fast, globally convergent method for obtaining feasible solutions to the OPF problem. Starting from the feasible initial point. obtained by stage 1, an interior point method (IPM) at stage II is used to solve the original OPF problem to quickly locate a local opt, inial solution. This two-stage solution algorithm can quickly obtain a, feasible solution and robustly solve OPF problems. Numerical test, systems include a 2,383-bus power system.

Abstract:Traditional electricity grids use large-capacity synchronous generators as power generation devices, which have the characteristics of large volume and high robustness. In recent years, the rapid development of renewable energy in alignment with the national strategy of Carbon Neutrality in China by 2060 has brought new opportunities and challenges to traditional power grids. Power electronics converters are the key to renewable energy integration to gradually replace traditional synchronous generators, leading to reduced inertia and more challenges. While being more flexible, it makes the stability of the grid worse. In view of this, various advanced control strategies have been developed in the literature. The control of grid-connected converters has been broadly divided into two groups, grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM). In this paper, the characteristics of the GFM control are benchmarked through simulations, mainly the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control and the virtual oscillator control (VOC). The benchmarking indicates that the VSG control strategies with virtual inertia have less fluctuation in response to various disturbances and the VOC performs better in terms of dynamics.

Abstract:An optimal adaptive control method for power systems is concerned in this paper. The control approach adopts a weighted controller and a type of extended recursive identification algorithm, of which the unbiased estimation deduction is also presented. Furthermore, the proposed control approach is applied to power system stabilizer (PSS) and some simulation experiments are carried out to test its control effect. The results prove conclusively that the optimal adaptive control approach can effectively impact the stability of the power system operation under disturbance.

Abstract:The considered optimal control problem of a stochastic power system, is to select the set of power supply vectors which infimizes the probability that the phase-angle differences of any power flow of the network, endangers the transient stability of the power system by leaving a critical subset. The set of control laws is restricted to be a periodically recomputed set of fixed power supply vectors based on predictions of power demand for the next short horizon. Neither state feedback nor output feedback is used. The associated control objective function is Lipschitz continuous, nondifferentiable, and nonconvex. The results of the paper include that a minimum exists in the value range of the control objective function. Furthermore, it includes a two-step procedure to compute an approximate minimizer based on two key methods: (1) a projected generalized subgradient method for computing an initial vector, and (2) a steepest descent method for approximating a local minimizer. Finally, it includes two convergence theorems that an approximation sequence converges to a local minimum.

Abstract:With the expansion of modern power systems, the stability issues become more and more prominent. Transient stability emergency control is usually designed in open-loop schemes and applies proper actions to avoid system collapse when transient stability cannot be guaranteed in serious contingencies. Taking transient stability and economic efficiency of power system into consideration, the emergency control problem can be modeled as an optimal control problem, which is computational expensive. In this paper, an optimal control method with constraint aggregation is proposed to reduce computational complexity. The yield nonlinear problem is a fairly small-scale optimization problem which can be efficiently solved by predictor–corrector interior point method. The adjoint sensitivity analysis (ASA) is employed to evaluate the first-order derivative while Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (BFGS) algorithm is used to obtain the second-order derivative. Besides, very dishonest Newton (VDHN) method and reusage of LU factorization results are explored to accelerate the forward and backward integration phase of ASA, respectively. The proposed approach is tested on four cases with different scales, and shows its potential in computational efficiency.

Abstract:Conventionally, power system has a hierarchical control structure including primary, secondary, and tertiary controls. The drawbacks of this hierarchical scheme are manifest: 1) it lacks flexibility and scalability, which is against the trend toward an open-access power system; 2) load forecast as the basis of tertiary control could be inaccurate and infeasible, especially in microgrid for example; 3) as the penetration of renewable energy increases, the relatively long time-scales of secondary and tertiary controls cannot accommodate to more severe power fluctuation within the system. To avoid these drawbacks, a distributed real-time optimal power flow control strategy is introduced in this paper. With the aid of up-to-date smart grid technologies such as two-way communication and distributed sensor, the proposed approach can avoid the need of load forecast and achieve the same objective as hierarchical control with a feedback mechanism in real time, that is to recover the nominal system frequency and maintain the active power of the generators close to the optimal operational condition in the presence of any disturbance. Convergence of the proposed approach is analytically proved. Simulation results in a 34-bus islanded microgrid and the IEEE 118-bus bulk power grid validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Based on the dual relaxation method, an extended convex programming and sequential linear programming optimal power flow approach is presented for online optimal dispatch. The optimization process is easy to be understood and the proposed approach is of the ability of detecting infeasible solutions in advance that makes the core optimization process to be disengaged from infeasibility problem. Key factors, which influence the effectiveness of control variables, are analyzed. Based on these factors, an index is defined to compress low efficiency controls, and to enhance the usability of optimal solutions. Extended convex programming method can easily handle all kinds of convex separable objectives and partially realize the separation of objectives and optimization process. This method can be flexibly applied to power system online corrective control and optimal dispatch. Numerical tests in several systems and an actual 121 buses system are given in the paper.

Abstract:With the integration of distributed generations and controllable loads, the power grid becomes geographically distributed with a time-varying topology. The operation conditions may change rapidly and frequently; thus, management and control of the smart grid pose great challenges on traditional centralized control strategies. This paper proposes a distributed algorithm for energy management in a power grid, while dynamically minimizing the adjustment costs. The objective function is designed to optimize the overall social welfare considering generation suppliers and load users simultaneously. The proposed algorithm integrates consensus algorithm and optimal control algorithm, which requires only information exchanging among neighboring units and enables the sharing of computational and communication burden among distributed local controllers. It is robust to communication failures and adaptive to topology changes. Simulation results of the IEEE 9-bus, 39-bus systems, and a 200-unit system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and indicate the promising applications to practical power systems.

Abstract:In addition to process steam and real power demands, manufacturing processes also have a varying reactive power demand that must be satisfied. Reactive power affects line currents and bus voltages, as well as power factor of the tie-line bringing power into the industrial plant from the local utility. The local utility applies a penalty if the tie-line power demand exceeds an agreed value and often imposes a low power factor penalty as well. Stable system operation requires that bus voltages are maintained within assigned limits, that transformers and connecting cables do not become overloaded, and that generators and synchronous motors run within their reactive capabilities. There can be many acceptable combinations of the settings of generator and synchronous motor excitations, of transformer taps and capacitor banks, all of which lie within the set of electrical system constraints. There are so many variables to manipulate that is very difficult for an operator to make optimal decisions, even under steady-state conditions. It is an even more complicated task during system upsets. This paper discusses a program that runs on a plant's distributed control system that resolves alternatives and presents to the operator the best combination of settings for implementation. The program can be adopted for direct online implementation. The paper discusses cases of three plants where online implementations have been employed.

Voltage/VAR Optimal Control Based on Switched System and Implementation in Shenzhen Grid

Abstract:A practical voltage / VAR optimal control strategy based on the switched system theory has been proposed in this work.According to the different control objectives,voltage / VAR optimal control problem could be decomposed into two subsystems: to improve the voltage quality and to reduce the total line loss.The mathematical optimal control model for each subsystem as well as the inter-switch rule between them are detailed,thus the complete voltage / VAR control algorithm can be established.The proposed control algorithm has been implemented in the power grid of the Shenzhen,which is a typical urban power grid in China.The results of the field test show that the proposed control strategy can significantly improve the static voltage quality of the power system,and effectively reduce the network losses at the same time.

Abstract:Traditionally, offline optimization of power systems is acceptable due to the largely predictable loads and reliable gen-eration. The increasing penetration of fluctuating renewable gen-eration and internet-of-things devices allowing for fine-grained controllability of loads have led to the diminishing applicability of offline optimization in the power systems domain, and have redi-rected attention to online optimization methods. However, online optimization is a broad topic that can be applied in and moti-vated by different settings, operated on different time scales, and built on different theoretical foundations. This paper reviews the various types of online optimization techniques used in the power systems domain and aims to make clear the distinction between the most common techniques used. In particular, we introduce and compare four distinct techniques used covering the breadth of online optimization techniques used in the power systems domain, i.e., optimization-guided dynamic control, feedback optimization for single-period problems, Lyapunov-based opti-mization, and online convex optimization techniques for multi-period problems. Lastly, we recommend some potential future directions for online optimization in the power systems domain.
Control-mode as a Grid Service in Software-defined Power Grids: GFL vs GFM

Abstract:In power systems with high penetration of power electronics, grid-forming control is proposed to replace traditional Grid-Following Converter (GFL) in order to improve the overall system strength and resist small-signal instability in weak grids by directly forming the terminal voltage. However, sufficient headroom of both active and reactive power must be made available for Grid-Forming Converter (GFM) to operate, potentially leading to sub-optimal operation in steady states. This presents a new research problem to optimally allocate between GFM and GFL to balance the ability of GFMs to improve the grid strength and the potential economic loss resulting from reserved headroom. An optimization framework under software-defined grids is proposed, for the first time, to dynamically determine the optimal allocation of GFMs and GFLs in power systems at each time step of system scheduling according to system conditions, which ensures both system stability and minimum operational cost. To achieve this, the system scheduling model is expanded to simultaneously consider the constraints related to active and reactive power reserves for GFMs, as well as the system level stability. Case studies conducted on the modified IEEE 30-bus system demonstrate significant economic benefits in that the optimal proportion of GFMs in the power system can be dynamically determined while ensuring power reserve and grid stability constraints.

Abstract:By combining the generation control,voltage control and power flow optimization,a power flow optimization and control model for the offshore oilfield group grid is developed and its solving method is given based on an overall consideration of the power constraints,voltage quality and economic indicators.First,the power flow control problem is formulated into a multi-obj ective nonlinear optimization problem.Then an algorithm is proposed based on the interior-point method and branch and bound method to solve the problem.The obj ective weights can be adj usted to meet the requirements of different grid operation modes.Finally,the system is tested with field data of the Southwest Weizhou oilfield group grid,the results showing that by setting the weight parameter appropriately,the voltage quality and power balance can be guaranteed and the economic operation is achieved while the generation unit output is optimized.
